The more you travel, the more your 기준 for choosing an Accommodation shifts from “luxury” to “essential comfort.” Tucked away in a mountain gorge at 1,000 meters above sea level in Kokonoe, Oita, Tabinoyado Yamatsubaki feels like the final paradise discerning travelers eventually find. Its greatest value lies in its intentionally limited number of rooms. Far removed from the bustle of a large Ryokan, it offers complete privacy—paired with perfectly judged hospitality that is attentive without ever feeling intrusive. From the moment you arrive, you can feel everyday life quietly fade away. The open-air bath is simply unforgettable. In crisp, unobstructed air, soaking in superb free-flowing Onsen while watching the starry sky shift moment by moment becomes more than a bath—it’s an indulgent sense of oneness with nature. For an Accommodation with such a private atmosphere, the generous space throughout is exceptional and especially appealing to wellness-minded travelers. As I was visiting after business and didn’t want to inconvenience the owner couple, I booked a stay with breakfast only—but each dish at breakfast told its own story. Every bite was spot-on and far beyond expectations. I regretted not ordering dinner so much that I could only think afterward: “Why didn’t I?” I also learned that at nearby Komatsu Jigoku—reopened for sightseeing after restoration completed in summer 2025—you can make Onsen eggs yourself. They kindly sold me eggs upon request and graciously accommodated my last-minute favor. I visited in early summer, but reaching Kokonoe’s mountains when they are covered in snow will likely require some preparation. Even so, that challenge only adds to the thrill of heading into a hidden retreat. Nature, renowned hot springs, and outstanding cuisine—Yamatsubaki brings them together in near-perfect balance. It isn’t just somewhere to stay; it’s a destination in itself—a truly one-of-a-kind Accommodation worth traveling for.

The lovely couple who returned to their hometown and newly built this Accommodation as their home runs it, and we were able to relax very comfortably. Having previously operated a restaurant in Tokyo, they served wonderful dishes using local ingredients, and we were very satisfied with their carefully curated wine selection. It was such a wonderful Accommodation that I’d love to see featured on “Jinsei no Rakuen.”

I had a very comfortable stay. The Room was clean, and the Facility was well equipped, so I felt at ease throughout my stay. They were also flexible with the check-out time, which was very helpful. Communication was courteous and pleasant until the end, so I would like to stay again if I have the opportunity. Thank you!

Contrary to my expectations, the Room was clean and relaxing. There was also a washing machine in the Room, so even if I got caught in the rain, I could do laundry that night and wouldn’t have trouble finding something to wear. There was a supermarket across the street where I could buy inexpensive groceries, and they also had boxed meals. It was within walking distance of sightseeing spots as well, making it an Accommodation I was very satisfied with. If I visit Kanazawa again for sightseeing, this is definitely an Accommodation I want to stay at again.

We planned to visit Kamikochi the next day and looked for Accommodation in Matsumoto City, but gave up because it coincided with the Suwa Lake fireworks festival. We found this Accommodation closer to Kamikochi; it was a little off our route, but my wife—who is very particular about Facilities and cleanliness—praised it highly. Our friends traveling with us were satisfied as well. The only disappointment was that the bath felt a bit small when five women used it at the same time, perhaps due to the Accommodation’s capacity. Breakfast was delicious, and we enjoyed a very calm overnight stay. We would like to thank everyone at the Accommodation.

We stayed here recently to coincide with my elderly mother’s visit back home. The Accommodation was very clean, and we were able to spend our time comfortably and pleasantly. We had made a Reservation for a Plan without dinner, but my mother was tired from the long journey and found it difficult to go out to eat. When we were unsure what to do, the owners kindly prepared dinner for us. Their flexible and thoughtful support truly helped us. Breakfast the next morning was also delicious, and we enjoyed it while having a pleasant chat with the owners. When we return home again, we would definitely like to stay here. Thank you very much.

We stayed the night before our trip to Mt. Kinka. The Room was well cleaned and felt very fresh and tidy. The women’s bath area was small with only two washing stations, but it was nice to be able to soak in a large bathtub. Breakfast was excellent. The white rice was Tsuyahime; it was my first time trying it, and it was delicious. The miso soup had great dashi flavor, and everyone in our family had seconds. The side dishes also felt homemade and were very tasty. We would like to stay again.

The Room is simple, but spacious enough to rest comfortably. As it has newly opened, the Room was clean and well maintained, with a great selection of amenities. There is also a 24-hour drink bar, which was very nice. The breakfast buffet had more than enough variety for me, and the French toast was delicious. My companion even had meat udon in the morning. I was too full to try it, which was a real shame. They said it was very tasty, so I would definitely like to try it next time I stay. Thank you very much.

This time, I had dinner here for the first time. It was my favorites—chilled pork shabu-shabu and tempura. Every time, the egg over rice is so delicious that I want to have multiple refills, and this time I was happy to realize it tastes different from what I make at home because the soy sauce is so good. I was truly impressed—thanks to Shodoshima, you can enjoy such wonderful soy sauce!! My daughter also loves egg over rice. Thank you very much.

My business trip was decided at short notice, so I made a Reservation. There is an Accommodation building on the property, along with a parking lot and Kappo Shiro. Maybe because it was a weekday, the parking lot was spacious, and Kappo Shiro seems to be used by locals for dinner and memorial gatherings as well. The Accommodation building is up to the 2nd floor by stairs—no issues for me. On the 1st floor there were complimentary drinks for guests, which was really helpful in this hot season. There was also a vending machine. The double Room was comfortable. The air conditioning worked well, it was quiet, and I slept soundly. There were plenty of TV channels, and the Wi-Fi worked without any problems! You can get a coupon for “Harajo Onsen Masago,” about a 5-minute walk away. It’s great that you can use it on your check-in day or even in the morning until 9:00 AM the next day! I didn’t expect to enjoy an Onsen stay, so I was very happy. It’s small but has a sauna too, and if you go later at night it’s not very crowded. Earlier in the evening it can be busier because locals also use it. Both dinner and breakfast are served at “Kappo Shiro.” (Even if your Plan doesn’t include dinner, you can pay separately; if you arrive by around 6:00 PM and there are seats available, it seemed like you could order various set meals.) I had Reserved the Business Plan. It probably varies by day, but that night we had simmered fish; gu-zoni soup; tempura and sashimi; chawanmushi; their local specialty Hyottsuru; plus white rice and miso soup! I usually eat as much as most men do, but I was completely satisfied with both quality and quantity. The food tasted exactly as you’d expect from a kappo restaurant—truly impressive!! I’d come back just for the meals alone. Breakfast was classic Japanese style—and of course excellent. If I have another chance, I’d love to stay here again next time on a trip with my mother!!

The food was delicious, and we were very satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. We were able to relax in the private bath at our leisure, which helped us fully recover from travel fatigue. The Room was clean and comfortable, and the owner’s warm hospitality left a strong impression. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to unwind in a quiet setting. If we have the chance to visit Nasu again, we would definitely like to stay here again.

It was our first Onsen Accommodation as a couple in a while. The bath was excellent, and the hot water was wonderful. Dinner was served in our Room, and breakfast was a buffet; the portions were just right and everything was great. Next time, we’ll stay with our family.

A peaceful Onsen Accommodation tucked away in the mountains. The silky-smooth hot spring water was wonderful. The old building has been renovated and feels clean, and the meals were delicious—I’d definitely like to visit again. However, the road to the Accommodation is a narrow single-lane route, so it may not be suitable for large vehicles or guests who are not confident drivers. There are also many stairs inside and outside the building, so it may not be ideal for elderly guests or anyone with mobility concerns.

A quiet Accommodation surrounded by nature, lovingly built by the owner—spacious, spotless, and with an amazing view. There is also a well-equipped BBQ hut in a separate building and a large dog run, so both our dog (a large breed) and our small children were very happy. We’d love to stay again.

The Room was spacious, and we were able to relax and stay comfortably. It is also close to West Lake, which is a great plus as you can enjoy a variety of activities nearby. The play area was large and the children had a great time, so I think this Hotel is an excellent choice for family trips. The steamed dishes were delicious as well, making it a very satisfying stay. We would definitely like to come back and stay again as a family.

Both dinner and breakfast were very filling. I had been hoping to try himemasu (kokanee salmon), and although it was limited to five servings that day, I was lucky enough to get one. It was very delicious. The Facility itself is fairly standard, but it was well cleaned and felt very tidy. I was a little concerned about the large number of winged ants, but I assume it can’t be helped due to the season. I think this Accommodation is highly recommended around Lake Towada.

A Plan with all-you-can-eat egg over rice (tamago kake gohan) and shijimi clam soup for breakfast. There were no side dishes, but the eggs and rice were delicious—I had three extra bowls. I also had three refills of the shijimi clam soup. I was very satisfied.

This Ryokan felt surprisingly spacious and deep beyond what you’d imagine from the entrance. The Japanese-style room, with views of a waterfall and stream and the soothing sound of running water, was truly relaxing. When we went up to the third floor, there was a large hall, and in front of it a pond surrounded by forest. In any case, it was a quiet, calming place. Dinner was delicious for us—perfectly seasoned with rich dashi flavor. The selection of sake and wine was excellent as well, so we really enjoyed the drinks (even though we can’t drink much). It was fun talking with someone who holds a sake sommelier certification; they even let us taste a sake from a brewery in Yamagata that I used to drink long ago, which brought back fond memories and made me very happy. We had a relaxing and enjoyable day.
