Relax and unwind while taking in the atmosphere of Lake Ashi...

This was our second stay, following last year. We stayed for two nights with four adults and our dog (a Yorkshire Terrier). The Room is spacious, so even a family of four can relax comfortably. The bedroom is also roomy—when we pushed the two beds together, there was still plenty of space for three people. The pet amenities were well stocked, and we had a very comfortable stay even with our dog. The kitchen is easy to use, and it’s convenient that almost everything you need is provided except seasonings. The refrigerator was pre-stocked with drinks such as wine, cup sake, craft beer, cider, and juice, as well as snacks and sweets—these thoughtful touches were much appreciated. One small disappointment was the coffee. Although there were four of us, there were only three coffee capsules; having one per person would be better. Also, we realized too late that coffee for the second day required advance request by the previous day, so we couldn’t receive it and ended up buying some from a vending machine. For a Multiple Night Stay, clearer guidance would be appreciated. The terrace feels private, and although it’s on the first floor, you can see Lake Ashi and the torii gate of Hakone Shrine through the trees—the location is excellent. Last year we noticed quite a lot of weeds in the garden area, but this time it was neatly maintained; we were happy to see that improvement. The terrace footbath was a bit too hot for us. Even at the lowest temperature setting it was still hot; we added water to adjust it but found it difficult to get just right. This may depend on the season and personal preference, but finer temperature control would be welcome. Once at a comfortable temperature, enjoying the footbath while feeling the evening breeze would be wonderful—and likely become one of our favorite moments unique to this Accommodation. The BBQ grill kept on the terrace is also easy to use, making casual BBQs another great feature. Overall, being able to spend time with family and our dog without worrying about others is what makes this place especially appealing. With well-equipped Facility features and amenities—and a relaxing atmosphere with Lake Ashi nearby—this is an Accommodation we’d love to return to again.

I wanted to watch the Lake Ashi fireworks from indoors, but on the first floor it was difficult because trees blocked the view. When I went outside, the sound was too loud, so I watched from inside on the second floor. If you have a dog or small children, I think this level is sufficient. It was a bit stressful that the parking lot is across the road.

    First Rakuten STAY Experience

We stayed in the 5th-floor Suite with our dog as a family of three. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji, but the view from the Room and the bath were excellent. However, we were really looking forward to watching a movie as a family using the projector and surround sound system, but after renting a movie, the system stopped connecting due to a technical issue during playback... We contacted customer support, but they told us that the network connection around Lake Ashi is poor and asked for our understanding. If that’s the case, we wish you wouldn’t promote the projector and surround sound system as key features of the Room, and would have informed us of this limitation from the start. We ended up wasting quite a bit of time troubleshooting, but aside from that, we enjoyed both the barbecue and breakfast, and had an overall pleasant stay.

    Good value for money.

No Meals Included for four guests, and it’s about a 10-minute walk to the Lake Ashi boat pier and Lake Ashi Terrace. There’s a convenience store right nearby, so the location was very convenient.\nThe only disappointing thing was that the coffee machine didn’t work. When I contacted them, instead of starting with a reassuring comment, the first thing they asked was, “Have you ever used a coffee machine before?” That really surprised me. If it were someone who truly had never used one, I can imagine how they might feel. Since this is an operator-supported Hotel without on-site staff, I felt they could have responded more politely and empathetically.\nFor reference, I work in the hospitality industry myself and have used several types of coffee machines, including at home.

Overall, the stay was comfortable. Since there is no window in the bedroom, I noticed a slight odor. Other than that, there were no particular issues, and the Room was clean. Also, I think having a massage chair would make it even more relaxing.

All Rooms have an unpleasant odor.

From the moment I opened the door, there was a strong smell of meat... Not only in the kitchen, but also in the bedroom and even the toilet... Maybe a previous guest had a barbecue? For someone like me who doesn’t eat meat, the odor was shocking. I sprayed the deodorizer that was left by the entrance all around, but after a while the smell came back... It just stank. Also, I was bothered by loud running footsteps from upstairs. That said, it was good that the kitchen had a full set of plates and utensils.

The air conditioner in the bedroom had a terrible odor.

I’ve been staying here with my pet since last year, and this was my third visit. Because the cleaning isn’t very thorough, I usually spend nearly an hour cleaning after arrival. The location is very convenient, so I’ve half accepted that. However, this time there was an issue that cleaning couldn’t fix. The moment I turned on the air conditioner in the bedroom, a sour smell spread throughout the room. I switched it to fan mode and ventilated as much as possible—running the exhaust fan and opening all windows fully. It finally seemed to settle down by night, but I couldn’t help feeling angry—am I really paying a high Accommodation fee just to deal with this? I hope you will improve your cleaning standards.

From the second floor, some trees partially obscure Mt. Fuji, but the view is still stunning.

The view is wonderful. From the second-floor Room, if you sit facing forward the trees may partially block the view, but when you stand you can clearly see Mt. Fuji and the torii gate of Hakone Shrine. It feels like staying in a private vacation home. The Facility is well equipped. The only downside was that the TV and its remote control were a bit difficult to use. Sensitive guests might be bothered by footsteps from the floor above. I really wish checkout were at 11:00.

Excellent location, but major management issues

The location is excellent, but I felt there were major issues with management. The setting overlooking Lake Ashi is truly wonderful, and having a terrace and a sauna was very appealing. That is exactly why the many shortcomings I experienced during my stay were so disappointing. First, another car was parked in the assigned parking space for my Room number, so I could not use it. In addition, all of the EV-only parking spaces were occupied by gasoline cars, which meant I could not charge as planned. Many of the guests seemed to be international visitors, and it felt like the rules were not being communicated clearly enough. Since it was impossible to identify or contact the vehicle owners, I believe a system is needed—such as requiring license plate registration at check-in. Inside the Room as well, the dishes did not appear to have been properly cleaned and looked as if they had been left as used by previous guests. The glasses also felt slippery and were not in a condition that could be used without re-washing. The towels shed a lot of dust/lint and did not feel clean. Furthermore, the humidifier was broken and unusable; there were multiple large stains on the sofa; and both the sauna hourglass timer and blinds were broken. While direct access from the bath to the terrace is an attractive feature, there was no privacy screening from outside views—it was completely exposed. Including loud conversations from other international guests late into the night, overall I felt significant improvements are needed in management and maintenance. The location and concept are great, which makes this especially unfortunate. I hope to see improvements going forward.

    The Best Accommodation

We stayed with our 1.5-year-old child and a miniature dachshund! Since there is no front desk, we could carry our luggage directly from the parking lot to the room and enter using a passcode, making it completely stress-free. Right in front of us was Lake Ashi with a stunning view of Mt. Fuji in the background—an amazing accommodation! There's also a well-stocked 7-Eleven just a 2-minute walk away, which is very convenient. We definitely want to use this place regularly from now on!

    Stunning Scenery and Onsen

This was our second stay. This time, we stayed on the 5th-floor suite with four people and a dog. The accommodation provided everything necessary for our dog. The kitchen was user-friendly, and although the terrace BBQ grill was electric, it had great heat power and was very convenient. The highlight of the stay was definitely the sauna and Onsen. Spacious with a refreshing outdoor air bath experience, it made us feel once again that one night is simply not enough. The downside remains the inability to adjust the brightness of the lighting fixtures. In particular, the light above the dining table is too bright, leaving us no choice but to either turn it off or endure its excessive brightness. Please consider improving this by allowing adjustable brightness settings. We are sure we will use your accommodation again in the future, so this is a heartfelt request. Thank you very much!

    Stunning View

Right in front of Lake Ashi, offering breathtaking views. The location was perfect. I didn't notice it on the check-in day, but the moment I opened the curtains the next morning, I felt amazing. Dog-friendly, spacious rooms, and relaxing Onsen and foot baths made for a wonderful stay. The only downside was the lack of skincare products like lotion. This is an accommodation I can recommend to everyone. I would love to stay here again!

The breathtaking view was truly inspiring.

The Onsen, sauna, and room were all wonderful. One request: please make the lighting in the room adjustable. The lights above the dining table and in the living room were too bright, making it hard to relax. It would have been nice to have at least one floor lamp.

    Relaxing Trip

This trip was planned as a relaxing stay at this accommodation. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we couldn't enjoy the view from the room that we were looking forward to. During our previous stay, the scenery was beautiful, which made us want to stay here again. However, after a year, the outdoor garden furniture had turned green and unappealing to sit on. It’s disappointing how much it deteriorated in just one year. Although there were reviews mentioning cleaning issues, overall it was relatively clean. However, fallen leaves and trash in the outdoor garden and hair found inside a dish drawer were unfortunate. The location is excellent for sightseeing and made us want to visit again. However, it seems that experiences can vary greatly depending on the room's location. For those traveling with dogs, choosing a spot with good views would be ideal.

Fourth stay, shocking dishware damage and facility malfunction.

Stayed for a workation. Thank you for hosting me. Since my first stay in May this year, there have been equipment issues every time. This accommodation does not respond to reviews mentioning facility failures or hygiene concerns. After realizing this, I attempted communication with the customer center. For my fourth stay, I trusted the statement: "We strive to prepare rooms with consideration for guest safety and comfort and improve hygiene management." However, I encountered numerous situations that led to a loss of trust. To the manager who sent an apology email (without providing their name), I will share detailed information with attached photos. 1) Reclining chair stopper malfunction: The backrest tilts backward uncontrollably when seated, making it impossible to recline at any desired angle. 2) Damaged screen door and broken toilet door (see attached photos). 3) Severely dirty wine glass (see attached photos): When taking out the glass from the front of the storage drawer, it was covered in dirt all over. Was it used by a previous guest and put away without cleaning? Did cleaning staff fail to check? After discovering this issue, I contacted customer service via the room tablet and showed them the condition of the glass through its camera. Other glasses also had lip marks or food residue on their rims—consistent with past stays' unhygienic conditions—making me regret revisiting. 4) Insufficient bathtub cleaning? On my first night’s bath compared to previous stays, there was a noticeable slimy texture inside the tub. The next day during daylight bathing hours, white floating particles were visible in large quantities under certain lighting conditions. The strong sliminess might be due to water quality; perhaps those floating particles are mineral deposits ("Yunohana"). However, during past visits there was no such sliminess nor excessive floating debris (soap scum?). Combined with concerns about cleanliness after finding dirty glasses earlier—I decided against using it further altogether. 5) Check-in staff behavior: My number of guests was confirmed three times upon arrival; similar repeated confirmations occurred during prior visits too by different staff members—is solo usage problematic? Other reviews also mention hygiene issues here frequently enough that consulting health authorities crossed my mind—but suspect operational awareness remains absent entirely instead! I canceled next year's reservation despite appreciating both location convenience alongside hot spring quality itself genuinely disappointing overall experience otherwise though! If genuine improvement intentions exist within your establishment still today somehow sincerely curious learning what specific measures being implemented addressing these matters directly now moving forward please clarify accordingly soonest possible response awaited Manager responsible previously unintroduced formally apologizing earlier correspondence likewise!

I was looking forward to enjoying the view of Mt. Fuji from the bath...

Overall, it was good, but here are three disappointing points: ① Depending on the room, parking is in the second parking lot, requiring crossing a busy road. ② I chose this facility to enjoy views of Mt. Fuji from the bath, but from the first-floor room's bath, only trees were visible. ③ There was not enough kitchen paper, making cooking difficult. I have stayed at several Rakuten Stay locations before where there were extra supplies like kitchen paper, plastic wrap, and garbage bags available; however, this location did not provide any spare kitchen supplies.

    The Onsen is too lukewarm.

Overall satisfaction is 3, but I wouldn't stay again. First of all, the onsen was too lukewarm! Considering the temperature during this season, I wonder if it's okay in winter? I didn't inquire because it was troublesome to do so from a tablet, but maybe it could have been resolved if I had asked? After returning home and still feeling doubtful, I contacted general customer service and was told that the temperature of the room's onsen might not be adjustable. Since we were exhausted from the prolonged heat and looking forward to enjoying a relaxing onsen as it got cooler, this was truly disappointing. Surely no one likes an overly lukewarm onsen? It made us feel cold; my partner even caught a cold. Regarding cleanliness: upon entering the room and heading to the sink area, there were hairs on top of the tissue box. The toilet also had dust accumulated. The terrace table wasn't clean either—it made me wonder if no guests had stayed for a while? But since it was just after a weekend, that shouldn't have been the case. It felt like cleaning at this accommodation is done carelessly—very disappointing. We brought our dog along but noticed that as mentioned in other reviews, maintenance of the garden seemed sloppy with trash scattered around; we didn’t feel comfortable letting our dog run freely there. Why not use artificial turf or make improvements for dogs' enjoyment since it's pet-friendly accommodation? That would surely attract more guests—what a missed opportunity! On a positive note: drinks and snacks in the fridge were free! This service was amazing—much appreciated! Plates were provided too; however, despite having ramen from "Ippudo" available in their vending machine, there weren’t any bowls suitable for ramen provided—we ended up splitting into two small bowls to eat it instead. If you're offering ramen via vending machines here then proper bowls should definitely be available. The stairs leading up to lofts are extremely steep—it’s quite challenging especially when carrying pets like we did with our dog. The coffee machine still contained used coffee grounds left by previous guests—not acceptable at all! Overall cleaning standards seem insufficient here. We stayed during their time-limited sale at 47,000 yen (no meals included), which made things somewhat bearable—but considering suites cost over 100k yen per night under normal circumstances...that level would’ve been unacceptable! One highlight though—the view of Mt.Fuji directly from our room—it truly delivered breathtaking scenery as requested beforehand! Winter snow-capped Mt.Fuji must look even more stunning—I can only imagine how beautiful it'd be then! In conclusion: while some aspects stood out positively (like free refreshments & great views), many finer details fell short leaving much disappointment behind—a reflection consistent with prior reviews about this accommodation overall. Lastly—the noise coming from upstairs footsteps ("thumping sounds") added further discomfort throughout…

I was surprised by the lack of cleanliness.

The bathroom faucet had toothpaste splatters (likely from someone's mouth), and the toilet paper holder had numerous stains. Both were easily cleaned with wet wipes, suggesting negligence by the cleaning staff. The Room's sofa had several large stains covering most of the seating area, likely from pets as it is a pet-friendly Room. It was unpleasant, so I covered it with bath towels before sitting. We chose BBQ for dinner, but the garden table and sofa were too dirty to use properly. We managed somehow with some effort, but overall it was not a comfortable stay. On a positive note, check-in and check-out were contactless and convenient; drinks and food like fish cakes were provided in the fridge; BBQ sets and breakfast were also prepared in advance in the fridge upon arrival—and they tasted good. However, I would not stay here again.

    Workation, third stay.

First stay in May, second in June, and third workation stay in July. Thank you for your hospitality once again. Drawn by the grandeur of Lake Ashi and the comfort of the guest room onsen, I visit whenever I have work near Odawara. This time coincided perfectly with the Lake Ashi Fireworks Festival. On the first night after arriving late from work, I watched from Motohakone Port; on the next day, I enjoyed it from my room terrace. Late at night, I was also able to witness the Aquarius meteor shower. In the quietness after fireworks visitors had left, I relished seeing shooting stars for the first time in a while. My first stay in May was on a second-floor room where Lake Ashi was completely obscured by trees. Additionally: - The screen door was broken. - The bathroom had drainage issues. - Dishes (especially glasses) were inadequately cleaned. It was an unfortunate experience overall. After sharing my feedback through reviews and communicating with customer service, they kindly prepared an upper-floor room as an apology for my second visit in June. For this third visit in July, it was back to a second-floor room again as indicated by pre-check-in email notification about my assigned room number—leaving me slightly disappointed thinking solo travelers might always be assigned these rooms? However fortunately this time there were partial lake views between trees; plus during my two-night stay’s second evening terrace viewing included both fireworks & meteors! I plan another visit come September but hope improvements can address: 1) **Check-in Staff Interaction**: - Tablet-based responses often involve overseas staff (possibly Chinese?) whose unclear Japanese pronunciation makes communication difficult; repeated clarifications met laughter causing slight discomfort too! Suggest ensuring receptionists possess proper language skills alongside professional manners fitting such roles better suited here instead? 2) **Hygiene Standards**: - Seasonal BBQ popularity among guests seems evident given sticky floors/food stains noticed upon stepping onto terraces outside rooms observed repeatedly across stays including unclean wine glasses/mugs bearing lipstick-like marks requiring personal re-washing efforts beforehand usage each occasion encountered alike before wondering whether dishwashing machines alone suffice cleaning tasks adequately handled otherwise? Given premium pricing charged accommodations provided surely cleanliness deserves greater attention prioritized accordingly expectedly improved moving forward ideally addressed soonest possible 4 stars. Will use Rakuten STAY again.

We stayed as a family of five. Since it was during Obon, we could only reserve a 55㎡ room, but in hindsight, choosing the 70㎡ option would have been better. The unique feature is that it stands apart from typical hotels or ryokans. The modern architecture is very appealing, and the way nature is showcased is excellent. The entrance was beautiful, so we took commemorative photos there. The room design gives an impression similar to major house manufacturers—cost-effective yet simple, elegant, and calming. The bathroom and footbath on the balcony with its view provide a very special experience. While this setup is usually sufficient, the room lacked something in terms of uniqueness and luxury—perhaps artwork or flowers would enhance it? The room's smell bothered us until the end; this might only affect those sensitive to odors. It could be due to smoke from BBQing on the balcony seeping into the room. You can choose between a projector and TV; however, the sound quality when using TV wasn’t great—perhaps unavoidable? Dust was noticeable on areas like built-in air conditioning filters, dining lights, and above the TV. These are why I rated it four stars instead of five. I’d love to use Rakuten STAY again in the future if these issues are addressed!

A Spectacular Fireworks Festival Enjoyed with My Dog and Grandchild

Stayed with my 10-year-old Chihuahua and 1-year-5-month-old grandchild. It was an incredibly satisfying trip. Recommended Points: ① The room was excellent. Stayed in the 501 Dog-Friendly Suite. Features included a private open-air bath with a view of Mt. Fuji, a sauna, a washer-dryer, foot bath, and balcony BBQ area. ② Unobstructed views: The weather was great, offering perfect views of Mt. Fuji. We were lucky to stay on the day of a fireworks festival—watching the Ashinoko Lake fireworks from the balcony was an unforgettable experience! ③ Great location: Close to Motohakone Port and within walking distance to souvenir shops and famous bakeries/confectioneries where we indulged on our first day! On Sunday morning, I enjoyed an early run from the Hakone Ekiden finish line to Hakone Shrine—a refreshing start to the day! ④ Excellent staff service: When there was an issue with the monitor, I called for assistance and staff promptly came to help us out in person. We will definitely return next year!

    The Onsen was excellent.

We stayed on the first floor with our dog. Having stayed at various accommodations with our dog, we found this one to be quite good. The kitchen was user-friendly, and the overall facility was well-equipped and convenient. Most importantly, the onsen was incredibly relaxing. When you fully open the windows, it feels like an open-air bath. The water temperature was just right as well. The downside, as others have mentioned, is the unmaintained grassy area beyond the terrace where dogs tend to wander off to. This made it difficult to let our dog play freely on the terrace. It would be great if this area could either be maintained or fenced off with a net for dogs' safety and convenience—it seems essential for a pet-friendly accommodation. Another point is that we had to move our car at check-out time as well. We wanted to leave it there while taking a walk around the lake but were told it wasn’t allowed. While it's understandable since there’s no staff managing parking due to self-check-in, this lack of flexibility without a front desk felt inconvenient. That said, although clouds obscured Mount Fuji during our stay, Lake Ashi was right in front of us and made for an enjoyable experience overall. We’d love to visit again if given another opportunity!

Encountered a guest room with a severely damaged screen door.

I stayed here for the first time, hoping to relax by Lake Ashi. It was also my first time using Rakuten's Vacation Rental service. Arriving around dusk, I managed to complete the unmanned check-in process in the room with reference to everyone's reviews. The assigned room was 205 on the second-floor corner. Contrary to promotional photos, the view of Lake Ashi from the room was mostly obstructed by trees. The proximity to tourists walking along the lakeside trail below made it less private, and loud voices from passersby made it hard to enjoy the terrace fully. As mentioned in other reviews, cleanliness left much to be desired; I had to re-wipe sticky surfaces on the kitchen and dining table myself. The screen door leading out onto the terrace had a large tear at its bottom, rendering it ineffective against insects (discovered only in daylight). Fortunately, during my stay, temperatures were cool enough that keeping windows closed wasn't an issue—but this would be problematic during warmer months when one might want fresh air while keeping bugs out. Given how torn this screen door is—allowing even large insects like hornets inside—it raises concerns about whether cleaning staff report such issues properly or if they go unnoticed entirely until guests complain directly. While winter may see fewer bugs overall compared with now (when activity increases), offering rooms where basic facilities fail feels unacceptable given premium pricing levels charged here. Despite these setbacks regarding functionality & maintenance standards within accommodations provided initially—I appreciated both location convenience alongside hot spring quality enough still plan returning soon under better conditions hopefully next time around!

Perfect for both adults and children!

We stayed with our dog, two middle schoolers, and two adults. The check-in process was easy to understand using a tablet. We stayed over the weekend, and it rained until Saturday evening. Although the weather was disappointing as we had ordered a barbecue for dinner, there was a sturdy roof, so we grilled outside and enjoyed our meal indoors! The dog supplies were well-prepared; all we needed to bring was our usual pet food—nothing else! It was almost perfect, but it would have been nice to have a gate at the entrance and a mirror in the bathroom. The Dyson hairdryer and underfloor heating not only in the living room but also in the washroom were great features. The projector delighted the middle schoolers as well. On Sunday, the weather cleared up beautifully—the view of Mt. Fuji with its torii gate against the blue sky from our Room was absolutely stunning! We definitely want to stay here again!

    Family Trip

The self-check-in process was smooth. Located along Lake Ashi, it offers an excellent location with Hakone Shrine within walking distance! There’s also a convenience store nearby, making it very convenient. We reserved a room with 4 double beds for 5 people across 2 families, so there was plenty of space with two bedrooms. The kitchen utensils and BBQ grill were well-equipped, so we brought our own ingredients and enjoyed a BBQ on the terrace for dinner. The weather in late April was perfect, creating wonderful memories. If I had to mention one thing, the remote control for the AV equipment might not be very responsive...

Is the price worth it? It's debatable...

First unmanned stay: accommodation for 4 adults with a pet-friendly room, but the loft was cramped! The dust was overwhelming, and I ended up sleeping on the sofa. Overall, it felt like cleaning wasn’t thorough. For BBQ, there were only 2 steak pieces for 4 adults instead of one per person... and just one piece of pork each. The hamburger patties were dry and tough—exactly as expected—so we brought our own meat, which worked out well. As for breakfast, one of the Japanese-style meal jars had its lid open and spilled contents; unfortunately, one person couldn’t eat it. Since it’s unmanned service, we weren’t sure if anyone could address this or if refunds were possible—it felt too troublesome to bring up. It left us thinking we’d rather pay a bit more to stay elsewhere next time.

    Excellent location!

This was my first time staying at Rakuten Stay with my beloved dog. The Room was clean, the Facility was well-equipped, and above all, the view was stunning! The semi-open-air bath was amazing! I would definitely like to stay again. They responded quickly to a mechanical issue, which was great. However, the communication process for resolving it took some effort, so I rated customer service 3 stars. I personally had no trouble checking in at both the entrance and Room thanks to the email provided beforehand, but others seemed to struggle quite a bit. There was even a long line at the entrance because people couldn’t get into the building.

    I want to try again.

The room was more spacious than expected and very comfortable. Above all, the Onsen was fantastic. Unfortunately, the weather was bad, and we could hardly see Mount Fuji, so we would love to stay again. The downside was that some dishes and cooking utensils were left dirty. Perhaps they were put back without being properly checked after using the dishwasher, as some frying pans and dishes were still greasy. It would be better if everything is thoroughly inspected during cleaning. Additionally, there were issues such as inconsistent responses from the customer service center, miscommunication, and errors that prevented us from checking out smoothly. However, with its excellent location and amazing Onsen, we definitely want to stay again!
