I have stayed here several times, and I always look forward to a cold beer from the fridge after enjoying the Onsen. This time, however, the fridge was empty. When I asked, I was told that because this is an early-booking Plan, drinks in the fridge are not included. This was the first time this has happened, and it made me feel there was no real benefit to booking early. The dinner also seemed to be of lower quality, which left me disappointed and wondering if that was also due to the early-booking Plan. I have always trusted IKYU when making a Reservation, but now I am reconsidering for future stays.

It became a wonderful summer vacation memory.

I have stayed here countless times. I don’t think I had ever stayed in summer before, so the nagashi somen and watermelon service became a wonderful summer memory. We also unexpectedly got to try sparklers, but they were damp and wouldn’t light. I stay at many Ryokan, but recently it’s rare to see shared slippers; most places provide stickers or markers. When going to the Onsen, not knowing whether you’re wearing slippers someone else used doesn’t feel pleasant. Also, I was very disappointed that the futon was already laid out at check-in, because it meant I couldn’t relax and enjoy the Room as much as I had hoped. Since this is Japan, I wanted the experience to reflect Japanese customs. Some things may not bother people from other cultures, but they do matter to Japanese guests. Other than that, I think the service is excellent. Among all places in Echigo-Yuzawa, Kagetsu is my favorite!

A Conveniently Located, Warm and Welcoming Onsen Ryokan with a Handmade Touch

I realized a week in advance that it was a three-day weekend and started looking, and this place still had availability. It’s conveniently close to the station, and the staff are wonderful. We also enjoyed Hegi soba noodles and local sake nearby. At JPY 30,000 per person for one night with breakfast, it feels a bit pricey compared with other Onsen Ryokan near Tokyo, so I’m giving it 4 points—but if it were a little cheaper, it would be a perfect 5.

    Early Summer in Echigo-Yuzawa

It was a wonderful stay. The hospitality, the meals, and the Onsen—everything was a moving and relaxing experience. Thank you very much.

    Everything was satisfactory.

I take domestic trips about three times a year. When choosing a Ryokan, I look for private dining, a Room of at least 30 m² with an in-room Onsen bath, beds (a must), and high Reviews for service and the facilities—typically for two people, one night with meals included, around ¥70,000 to ¥90,000. Since my goal is simply to relax, I avoid large Accommodations that are lively with families with children and unsettled buffet-style dining. Among those options, this stay was excellent overall. First of all, the food was delicious. Every dish made with seasonal ingredients from selected regions was wonderful, and the portion size of each course was just right. The facilities were very clean and well maintained throughout. The bath temperature was perfect and very relaxing. There weren’t many amenities, but I bring what I need anyway, so it wasn’t an issue. The complimentary drinks—coffee, champagne, and sake—were also a nice touch. Everyone provided courteous service, allowing me to spend a calm and comfortable time here. This has become an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    Thank you very much.

The Facility may feel a bit dated, but it is kept clean. Above all, the warm and attentive service makes you feel relaxed and at ease. The food was delicious as well, so we were very satisfied.

    It was a wonderful Room.

It’s rare to find an Onsen area where you can see the Shinkansen from your Room. I liked the sliding window with a bamboo blind. I liked that the dining menu had handwritten-style illustrations. I’ll come again.

    Relaxing Accommodation

I could feel Niigata pride throughout, and the warm hospitality made my stay very comfortable. The interior seems to have been renovated well and felt clean. The Room and furnishings make good use of a Japanese style while incorporating modern elements, creating a pleasant space unified in soft tones. However, the row of geranium planters placed by the floor-to-ceiling windows along the corridor facing the courtyard felt out of place against the Japanese garden-style courtyard and seemed to spoil the view. The meals, centered on local ingredients and regional dishes, were delicious. Still, when traveling I also look forward to something more like a feast, so I found both the quality and quantity a little lacking. The Onsen temperature was just right—not too hot or too lukewarm. The trees around the open-air bath were arranged with good taste (such as autumn foliage and azaleas), with well-shaped forms that let me enjoy an early-summer sense of fresh greenery. However, there were quite a few weeds growing there, which bothered me. Overall it was a good Accommodation, and one I would like to stay at again.

A Relaxing Space and Delicious Meals

I stayed here during my year-end trip. Although I arrived earlier than the check-in time, I was warmly welcomed, and they kindly stored my luggage in advance. Both the room and the onsen were such wonderful spaces that I lost track of time. The meals were very delicious, and the menu was easy to understand. However, since it was a special dish by the head chef, I feel that a bit more explanation about its background or details would have made it even more memorable. This is definitely one of the accommodations I would love to visit again.

    Repeat Stay

I believe this is a very comfortable accommodation in every aspect. This time, we stayed in a modern room. The flooring in the room was sturdy and felt pleasant to the touch, making our stay very enjoyable. The meals were served in just the right portions and were delicious. All the staff members were cheerful, and it was great to see how hard even those from overseas were working. From the matcha welcome drink at check-in to complimentary alcohol and coffee services at the lounge, we felt thoughtful hospitality throughout our stay. After checking out, we were allowed to leave our car and take a walk to explore Yuzawa town near the station, which added to our experience. Since there were two of us, the room differed slightly from what was shown in photos; next time, we'd like to try staying in another room as well.

    The accommodation an...

The accommodation and guest rooms show signs of age, and while the rooms have been renovated, the interior still reflects its years. There were moments when the staff's response felt a bit off, which was slightly concerning. However, what truly stands out is the dining experience. The meals are exceptional, crafted with great ingenuity, and it’s hard to imagine finding better cuisine anywhere in the Echigo-Yuzawa area. This accommodation is worth choosing for its dining alone.

A Ryokan that will remain in your memories forever

The staff's hospitality was warm, making the stay very comfortable. The food was truly delicious, especially dinner, where every dish paired perfectly with rice! I was delighted to hear that I could have as many refills as I wanted since there was plenty available. If the drink menu had a bit more variety, I would have ordered more. The bath was also fantastic, and being able to use it 24 hours a day was greatly appreciated. It was an excellent accommodation that makes me want to visit again.

It was a cozy and lovely accommodation!

A wonderful accommodation where you can feel subtle decorations and heartfelt hospitality everywhere. The stay began with a cheerful "Welcome back!" greeting, matcha tea, and koi fish welcoming us. We enjoyed local ingredients while sipping on Niigata's fine sake, guided by a menu adorned with artistic illustrations. After relaxing in the flowing Onsen, we had a restful sleep in a spacious and impeccably clean room. The next morning, we indulged in a fresh and abundant breakfast worthy of being called "Japan's healthiest breakfast," all while admiring beautifully drawn illustrations (so satisfying!). The lounge offered Japanese sake before dinner, coffee after breakfast, and refreshing cold Onsen water. Combined with the delightful hospitality of the cheerful hostess, it was an incredibly comfortable stay that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Experience the heartfelt hospitality of a small-scale Ryokan.

    1) A warm "Welcome back" greeting upon arrival, surprising for a first-time visit, with smiles from the hostess to the staff—such a pleasant atmosphere! 2) A welcoming matcha tea service while filling out the guestbook at a relaxed pace. 3) The room was spacious in "Japanese-modern" style, comfortably accommodating three people. 4) Dinner featured a variety of seasonal mushroom dishes, though more meat options would have been appreciated. 5) The onsen had abundant hot water but was too high in temperature for long soaks. The outdoor bath (low temperature) was around 30°C and felt cold. 6) Bedding was light yet warm, paired with an ideal room temperature for comfortable sleep. 7) Thorough cleaning throughout the accommodation made it very comfortable overall.

    Accommodation near Echigo-Yuzawa Station

This accommodation is within walking distance from Echigo-Yuzawa Station and seems to be an older building. There were a few foreign staff and guests, giving a sense of internationalization. During the autumn foliage season, there were many guests, and the staff seemed busy. The room's private open-air bath was excellent, with glass doors that can be closed to keep out the cold air for a comfortable bathing experience. Thank you very much!

A Trip to Echigo-Yuzawa Before the Autumn Leaves

I stayed at the accommodation at the end of September. This visit was a "revenge trip" from last year (as I had to cancel my previous stay due to an unexpected illness at another accommodation). Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed with matcha and sweets, which helped me relax after a long drive in my car. For dinner after bathing, I was guided to the innermost room where I could enjoy my meal leisurely. The menu perfectly suited my taste—absolutely delightful! The highlight was the rice made with Uonuma-grown grains; it was so delicious that I ended up eating too much. The "Today's Recommended Sake," Hakkaisan, also paired wonderfully with the meal. Breakfast did not disappoint either—TKG (rice topped with raw egg), soup, and pickles were all excellent! (Once again, I ate too much.) Although rain had been forecasted during our trip, it conveniently stopped while we were sightseeing (visiting places like Kiyotsu Gorge, Tokamachi's hegi soba restaurants, and Yayoi Kusama's exhibitions). The next day brought clear skies—the view from the summit of Yuzawa Highland Park was breathtaking. Before heading home, we used the underground parking lot near the station and enjoyed shopping for souvenirs at COCORO Yuzawa. Unfortunately for me as a driver, I could only glance enviously at Ponshukan's sake tasting corner. It was truly an enjoyable stay and destination filled with wonderful sightseeing spots—I would love to visit again someday! Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    Unfortunately.

This is my first visit in two years. I had a good impression of this accommodation before, so this time I brought my family along. I requested a Japanese-style room. When we were shown to the room, the futons were already laid out, which felt disappointing as it gave the impression of a budget accommodation. The futons were arranged for two people and one person separately, but for some reason, the futon for two was laid with their heads facing directly north. It didn’t feel pleasant at all.

    I had a relaxing stay.

Enjoy a relaxing stay with early check-in and late check-out. The lounge offers ice cream and tea, and at certain times, you can also enjoy alcoholic beverages, which was fantastic.

Meals are recommended; No Meals Included is a missed opportunity.

Upon notifying your estimated arrival time by phone, you will be greeted upon arrival, assisted with unloading luggage from the trunk, and even have your car parked for you after handing over the car key—offering a luxurious service reminiscent of arriving at a Monaco celebrity hotel in a high-end sports car. The check-in process begins with a warm welcome as you pass through the entrance, landing area, and creek where golden fish swim before being served matcha tea and traditional sweets in the tea ceremony room. Around seven staff members greet you with deep bows at the main entrance, making for an exceptional start to your stay. Throughout your walk down the hallways, every staff member greets you politely and warmly—a testament to their thorough training that creates an incredibly pleasant atmosphere. Meals are served in spacious private dining rooms resembling fine restaurants. The colorful dishes look like they were illustrated by professional artists and come with detailed menu explanations printed on A4 paper for each guest. The food is abundant in quantity, excellent in quality, and beautifully presented—so much so that it’s hard to finish everything! The rice is premium-grade Uonuma Koshihikari rice; its flavor alone makes it tempting to have 3-4 bowls before finishing off with ochazuke (rice soup), which comes prepared in two different styles—a delightful surprise! From aperitifs like amazake (sweet sake) or vegetable smoothies to appetizers featuring nine small dishes, fresh sashimi platters, flavorful broths paired perfectly with top-quality domestic beef sukiyaki hot pot—the meal exceeds expectations at every turn. Dessert features freshly made Mont Blanc pastries that are simply divine! Many dishes incorporate rice malt (koji), leaving not only your taste buds but also your skin feeling pampered. Breakfast continues this trend of abundance and excellence! At checkout time everything is explained clearly; when receiving back your car key you'll find thoughtful touches like mint gum tied on for alertness during driving along with small bags of lemon candies as gifts. In addition to all this hospitality: enjoy complimentary free-flowing sake or juice alongside snacks such as "Kaki no Tane" crackers or various Japanese dagashi treats while relaxing near fireplaces within cozy lounge areas equipped w/ takeaway coffee/herbal teas served stylishly inside elegant cups! This accommodation truly offers more than words can describe—it’s highly recommended!

Accommodation with friendly and cheerful staff

It was so much fun! The staff's cheerful attitude was 100% likable—energetic and efficient. It was truly refreshing. The Facility was decent, but I stayed in a room with an open-air bath, which made it very satisfying and relaxing. The meals were better in the morning than at night—healthy and delicious!

A historic Ryokan with a warm and hospitable atmosphere. However, I felt a bit of confusion upon arrival. The building looked different, and I thought I might have made a mistake. The building on the left in the photo of the Ryokan actually belongs to the neighboring Hotel. It may have been difficult to capture the entire view of the Ryokan, but with drones available nowadays, updating the full-view photos might be a good idea.

This is the right place. Completely satisfied.

Warm and welcoming service, delicious meals, and relaxing onsen made our first trip to Niigata a perfect choice with this accommodation. At check-in, we mentioned our early Shinkansen schedule the next day and our plan to watch fireworks at Echigo-Yuzawa Station by 9 PM. The staff kindly adjusted the timing for us. (While we understand they may not always accommodate every request due to other guests' reservations, we were pleasantly surprised by their shuttle service!) The meals featured plenty of local Niigata ingredients, accompanied by an easy-to-understand area guide with cute illustrations. The sake tasting (pairing set) was enjoyable even for beginners. From fresh sashimi and summer vegetables to Koshihikari rice (so delicious that I had six bowls in total during dinner and breakfast!), the dishes were outstanding. The meat was incredibly flavorful, but the matcha dessert left a particularly lasting impression—it was amazing! The free-flow lounge offered dry and sweet sake options, sparkling drinks, apple juice, sparklers for fun moments, and even Othello! (We heard you could also play table tennis upon request.) The onsen felt slightly compact but wasn’t crowded despite it being peak season during Obon holidays. We thoroughly enjoyed the soothing hot water without any issues. Our room was a clean Japanese-style space—exactly what you’d imagine when staying at an onsen ryokan—and it exceeded expectations! While there were many memorable highlights from this stay, what stood out most was the warm smiles of the staff, their kind words of welcome, and their attentive service. It made us want to visit this ryokan in Echigo-Yuzawa again someday. Thank you so much!

The rice and water are excellent.

During the Obon holiday, we stayed with the No Meals Included plan, but the complimentary services of Japanese sake, coffee, and tea in the first-floor lounge were delightful. After enjoying the Onsen, we experienced a sense of elegance with sparklers. The paid service to enjoy premium Japanese sake like a cocktail was impressive, thanks to the thoughtful staff who introduced it as if they were sake sommeliers. Indeed, delicious rice and water create excellent sake. For dinner, while restaurants on the station front side were crowded, those on the back side of the station were relatively less busy and reasonably priced—highly recommended!

A warm "Welcome back" greeting sets a relaxing and pleasant tone. The food was delicious, absolutely fantastic. The rice grains were sweet and so enjoyable that I could eat endlessly. Especially the TKG (Tamago Kake Gohan) was outstanding. The staff member who served us had an amazing personality as well. I’ll definitely come back again!

Thank you for your courteous service.

I visited with my elderly mother. Thank you very much for your kind hospitality. Although there was a characteristic scent of an old building, the exceptionally attentive service (with lots of conversations) and learning about local foods allowed us to have a wonderful time. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Positive Points: - The day after completing the reservation, I received an email confirming pick-up at the station and private bath times. - The hot spring water didn’t have a sulfur smell, yet it made my skin feel smoother and brighter—I loved it! - The wind chimes in the lobby were very beautiful. - The indoor bath was very pleasant to use. Points of Concern: - From the first moment we met, greetings were consistently "Welcome back." While I understand this as part of hospitality, it felt slightly out of place and brought me back to work mode instantly. - Despite being in Niigata, where rice is renowned, it was served in a wooden container instead of a clay pot, which seemed to diminish its quality slightly. - The dining area required navigating stairs with sunken seating arrangements that were challenging for my mother with weak legs and hips. Additionally, there were no windows; some wall stains caught our attention as well—it felt like such potential was wasted here. - This is personal preference but the outdoor bath water temperature was quite lukewarm for me.

    It is a good Ryokan.

As it was nearby, I often use the Onsen in Yuzawa, but this time I visited this Ryokan for the first time because of its good Reviews. The staff, meals, and baths were all great; however, I did notice some aging issues like rust on external handrails. The Room had been renovated and was very clean. Thanks to an IKYU coupon, the cost-performance was excellent. Overall, it’s a good choice for those who enjoy a homely atmosphere; however, for a trip with only adult women, it might feel slightly childish—this is likely a matter of personal preference. The Onsen has two areas with alternating access schedules; since there isn’t much difference between them, perhaps alternating isn’t necessary.
