No repeat stays guaranteed at this Ryokan.

Twice a month, I refresh from work by staying in a guest room with an open-air Onsen bath. It’s in a great location that’s easy to reach by car from central Tokyo, and the Onsen is nice, but I still haven’t found a Ryokan in Ikaho Onsen that truly satisfies me. I’ve decided I won’t be returning to this Ryokan!

    A great accommodation.

On a whim during the Obon holidays, I made a Reservation for one night starting August 15, booking on August 13. I have a shellfish allergy, and since it was such short notice I thought it might be difficult, but they replied right away, “No problem.” The Hotel does feel a bit old, but it is well kept and clean, so my stay was very comfortable. The meals were generous and delicious. Above all, what makes this Hotel special is how kind everyone is. They don’t say unnecessary things, but if you ask something they think it through as if it were their own matter and respond sincerely. It left me feeling warm inside. It really shows that you don’t need a luxury Hotel to have a great stay. I highly recommend staying here at least once.\nI do not recommend climbing the 365 steps of the Ikaho Onsen stone staircase in midsummer—I was drenched in sweat and completely out of breath.

    Quite disappointing.

Because we were celebrating a birthday, we upgraded the main dish to Joshu beef, but there were only three slices of meat. The rest of the meal also came out in very small portions—just one or two bites at a time—so it is definitely not enough for younger guests or anyone with a big appetite. One of the drinks we ordered at the beginning was forgotten and never arrived. The service and explanations of the dishes also felt inexperienced. The dining area had more of a cafeteria-like atmosphere. The meal, service, and Onsen were all far from the image presented on the website, and there was no sense of luxury at all. The Onsen operates on a rotating schedule, and again it felt different from what was shown online—more like a large public bathhouse. The clear Onsen had such a strong chlorine smell that I didn’t feel like getting in. However, the Room was extremely clean, well maintained, and had a great view—we were very satisfied with that. The biggest issue was payment at checkout. We had also made a Reservation for bread, so we picked it up while checking out. When I tried to pay, I was told it had already been settled; even when I said “No, I haven’t paid,” they insisted it was fine. So I left thinking it would be charged together with the Accommodation fee to my card later. When we were around Maebashi, the Accommodation called and said that the charges and Hot Spring Tax had not been paid after all. I assumed this was simply a mistake by the front desk staff and told them I would pay by card, but they told me to pay by bank transfer or send cash by registered mail. I said I would pay, yet you refused payment at checkout—and then you won’t accept card payment afterward either? Why should I have to go to the post office or arrange a bank transfer after returning from my trip? Even in the email with their bank details there was no apology—only “Sorry for your inconvenience.” I clearly explained why I ended up leaving without paying due to their refusal at checkout, yet they provided no explanation on their side. It felt as if they treated me like someone who intentionally left without paying. Since this should be recorded on security cameras as well, I want them to review what happened at reception. I saw similar Reviews from other guests saying they received calls and had to go back to settle payment too—so nothing has been improved. Overall it was truly disappointing—I wish we hadn’t gone. Breakfast and our Room were good; honestly, if breakfast-level quality had been served for dinner instead, satisfaction would have been much higher.

    Your First Solo Trip

Seeking healing through the Onsen and delicious cuisine, I chose Hotel Matsumotoro for my first solo trip. I enjoyed a luxurious stay without feeling lonely at all. From the warm welcome to the meals, sightseeing advice, and farewell, all the staff provided heartfelt service. I’m glad I chose Hotel Matsumotoro.

    Your First Visit to Ikaho

We stayed here for a family trip. The Accommodation is kept clean and tidy. From the guest room, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains, which felt wonderfully close to nature. One thing to note: due to the location, many sports cars drive by, so engine noise can be heard inside. It didn’t bother me much, though. Also, you can order amenities and bread from the tablet in your room, so there’s no need to make phone calls. Dinner is served as a kaiseki course meal, and breakfast is buffet-style. At dinner, the staff explain each dish. They seemed new and a bit nervous, but they were more composed than my younger sister—I was honestly impressed. I look forward to seeing them do even better in the future. For the Onsen, we used the large public bath, the panoramic-view bath, and a private bath. The water was excellent. That was a long review, but overall we felt it’s a very good Accommodation. Thank you.

Some front desk staff were unhelpful.

At checkout, the front desk staff asked whether there were any additional charges such as room service. I replied that I had not used any. The staff then escorted me to the Ryokan exit, and I left. About 30 minutes later, the Ryokan called to say that the Hot Spring Tax had not been paid. They explained that there is no Plan that includes the Hot Spring Tax in advance, so all guests are supposed to pay it at checkout; however, the staff member failed to handle this, which was very unpleasant. Although I had already departed for my next destination, I could not leave it unpaid, so I had no choice but to cut short my time there and return to the Ryokan to settle the payment. Regarding the baths: as it was midwinter and very windy at the time, the open-air bath felt slightly lukewarm. Adjusting the temperature according to the season would make it more comfortable. The indoor bath was at a pleasant temperature and very relaxing. I was highly satisfied with the meals. Breakfast in particular was excellent—the buffet offered both high quality and generous variety—and I felt it would not become repetitive even during a Multiple Night Stay.

    The Onsen was very pleasant.

We stayed in a Room with a scenic-view bath. The Onsen temperature was just right, and we were able to relax in the Room. Since there were six of us, each person enjoyed their time freely—some went to the large public bath, while others relaxed in the Room. The private dining room prepared for dinner, however, felt like an old-fashioned training trip venue: it was dark and chilly, and the tables were like long seminar desks, which was disappointing. Perhaps because of that, even though the tableware seemed carefully chosen, it didn’t lift our mood. The food also felt a bit rough and wasn’t quite satisfying. The breakfast buffet was easier to enjoy and tasted better. We were satisfied with the Room and the Onsen, so we hope the meals will improve.

    Overall, it was very good.

The staff’s welcome was wonderful. I felt good from the moment I arrived at the Hotel. After check-in, they drove us to the stone-step street, and we enjoyed a relaxing stroll. The dinner was served in a private room, and both the portion size and seasoning were great. The in-room open-air bath was spacious enough for two, and the temperature could be adjusted precisely and stayed stable, so we didn’t need to add water or make constant adjustments. We also used both large public baths on the 2nd and 8th floors (they switch between men and women), and we especially liked the one on the 8th floor. The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of dishes, including Mizusawa udon, which really gave us an Ikaho feel. The send-off at departure was also pleasant thanks to the staff’s warm service. It was a Hotel that made us want to come back again.

Great service and a nice Room!

The service was excellent. I did feel the meal service was a bit slow, but it may have been due to limited staff. The Room was also very nice.

It was a wonderful Facility and very family-friendly, making it easy to relax with children. The Plan that lets you dine while your child plays in the play area was innovative, but perhaps out of consideration, the meal was served intentionally after it had cooled. I appreciate that serving a child’s portion not piping hot can help prevent burns when eating together, but as freshly made meals prepared by others are hard to enjoy while raising children, I had been really looking forward to this as a special time. Since my child was happily playing in the kids’ area and I finally had a chance to eat freshly prepared food at a relaxed pace, I was very disappointed.

    Hospitality Accommodation

Matsumotoro is truly an "accommodation of hospitality." During my stay, I could feel the pride and dedication of the staff in their work. They attentively observed guests and provided assistance at just the right moments. This time, I stayed to celebrate a companion's 60th birthday, and the heartfelt handwritten gift from the proprietress deeply moved my friend. Seeing my friend's joy made me feel happy as well. The early morning nameko mushroom soup prepared by the senior proprietress was so rich in flavor that it made me sigh with delight. Be sure to wake up early to enjoy it! (laughs) The hotel-made bread I purchased as a souvenir was delicious, and the breakfast buffet featured a delightful selection of dishes unique to Ikaho, leaving me very satisfied. When I lingered around the kamameshi corner, a kind staff member offered to prepare it for me—thank you for such a warm moment! Next time, I'd love to stay at Matsumotoro's sister facility "Doggy Suite Pero" with my dog. Thank you very much!

Beyond the rising steam, the beautiful snow-covered ridgelines soothe the soul. The perfect solo year-end getaway.

I stayed here alone for two nights and three days to close out 2025. It was a quiet yet deeply moving time—like washing away a year’s worth of lingering heaviness. [About the Room] The Room felt almost luxurious for one person. The Japanese-modern design was refined, and the double bed was extremely comfortable. There wasn’t a view from the window, but that actually helped shut out the noise of the outside world and created a cozy, cocoon-like sense of seclusion that let me truly face myself. With a large TV, counter, and other Facilities that felt new, everything was clean and comfortable. [Large Public Bath & Spectacular Views] Above all, my experience in the large public bath on the top floor is beyond words. As I sank into the water and casually looked up, the magnificent ridgeline of the Tanigawa Mountain Range suddenly came into view through breaks in the steam. Under winter’s crystal-clear blue sky, those snow-capped peaks looked both austere and somehow warm—radiating an almost sacred whiteness. The scenery woven by Gunma’s mountains was like a painting. It held an overwhelming beauty and silence of nature straight out of one of Sosuke Natsukawa’s novels; simply gazing at the mountains filled me with emotion deep in my chest. The hot spring water itself was wonderful as well—silky against my skin—with snowy scenery right before my eyes. I found myself wishing time could stop. [Meals & Service] Dinner was a course meal featuring plenty of local vegetables. Rather than being flashy, it had gentle flavors that let you feel each ingredient’s natural richness. The breakfast buffet also offered great variety; I especially enjoyed freshly fried maitake mushroom tempura and mountain vegetables. The staff struck exactly the right balance—respecting my time alone while still offering warm consideration through excellent service. When my heart feels tired again, I’d love to return to see those white ridgelines once more.

    It was so relaxing!

The entire Hotel has been renovated, and the Room was clean and comfortable. The staff were well-trained and provided pleasant service. A young man in charge of serving dinner, who seemed to be in training, had a wonderful smile that made us feel warm. It was impressive as a basic of hospitality. The baths on the 2nd and 8th floors alternate usage times, both offering great water quality; however, the open-air bath on the 8th floor is highly recommended. Dinner was creative and delicious. If I may say so, I hesitated between choosing this main building or its sister establishment offering Western-style (French-inspired kaiseki) cuisine but opted for this one; perhaps it could lean slightly more towards traditional Japanese cuisine. Breakfast was also very delicious. The self-serve pork shabu-shabu and mini-sized rice pot dishes were enjoyable to prepare. Upon leaving, we purchased bread baked within the Hotel as well as chopsticks provided during dinner that we particularly liked. We are very satisfied—thank you!

    Everyone was satisfied!

This was my second stay. This time, it was a trip for four seniors, including myself and former colleagues from my company days. For all of them, it was their first visit to Ikaho, but everyone was highly satisfied with the hospitality and cuisine at Matsumotoro Ryokan. For lunch, we dined at Yumemitei restaurant in Pinon, a sister establishment of Matsumotoro Ryokan (?), and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal there as well. The traditional Japanese attire featuring Yumeji designs worn by the female staff received great praise. We deeply appreciate the warm hospitality provided by all staff members, including those responsible for room cleaning.

I stayed in a suite room. I was satisfied with the room, including the sauna and open-air bath, but I was dissatisfied with the service and meals. The female staff who guided me to the room did not even offer to carry my suitcase. The dinner had too few dishes, and the content was not satisfactory for the price.

    Hotel Reviews

Good Points The breakfast was warm, and the pickles and simmered dishes were well-seasoned, making each dish delicious. I always evaluate a Hotel's buffet by the sausages I eat there. They were decent; I would rate them 4 out of 5. By tasting the sausages, you can understand how much effort the Hotel puts into their ingredients. Bad Points At checkout, there was no greeting such as "We hope to see you again" from the staff. It was disappointing—at worst, even a casual word is fundamental to hospitality. Please improve staff training.

    Disappointing dinner.

The Onsen, including the open-air bath, was satisfying. The facility was relatively clean, and the staff's service was decent. However, dinner was disappointing. Most of the dishes seemed pre-made and reheated in a microwave, lacking flavor. On the other hand, the breakfast buffet with fresh salad, rice, and miso soup was warm and delicious. Since guests look forward to dinner at a first-class Ryokan, we hope for more exceptional hospitality in this regard.

    Meals are not recommended.

The Onsen is available only in the private rooms, as there is no large public bath, so I would rate it 4 stars. The interior of the facility has been renovated and is clean. However, the room's air conditioning was weak and felt cold. The slippers were also a bit uncomfortable to use. There was a bakery, but the selection was limited, which was disappointing. The bread was delicious though. Overall, the meals were not very impressive. The welcome jelly dessert tasted good but came in a deep plastic container that made it hard to eat. Dinner had overly rich sauces with strong smells—simpler flavors might be better? The preparation of the char fish wasn’t thorough as its innards were left inside. The Hayashi sauce felt forced as well. Desserts resembled convenience store pudding served in plastic containers again. The breakfast buffet’s shabu-shabu would have been better suited for dinner instead. Next time, I’ll opt for no dinner included!

Exceeded expectations in a good way.

Stayed in a room on the 5th floor or higher with a great view. - Located slightly away from the stone steps - Meals were reasonable for the price (breakfast was satisfying) - Amenities and drinks were somewhat limited However, considering the price, everything necessary was provided. The staff was kind, and Shirogane no Yu had high transparency and left my skin feeling smooth, making it very pleasant. Personally, I recommend rooms with open-air baths!

    Highly satisfied!

The exterior may look old, but the interior has been beautifully renovated, providing a very comfortable stay. Both dinner and breakfast featured local ingredients and were absolutely delicious. My husband was also very satisfied. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the Ikaho steps, and there is Shuttle Service available to the top, so the location is convenient. If I visit Ikaho Onsen again, I would definitely stay here.

Accessible for those with mobility challenges

My husband has right-side paralysis due to a stroke, but I wanted him to experience an Onsen, so after searching online, we decided on Matsumotoro. After making the reservation through IKYU.com, the Hotel contacted us the next day to arrange a private family bath. My husband, who usually settles for just a shower in the Room, was able to enjoy soaking in an Onsen this time! The meals and staff service were impeccable! We are grateful for their thoughtfulness towards my husband with mobility issues. We will definitely stay again!!

We stayed for one night as a couple. From the moment we arrived by car, we were impressed by the excellent service of the staff and deeply moved by the high quality of the Onsen and meals. We are also grateful for the prompt response to a Room issue. The exceptional hospitality of the staff truly left a lasting impression. We look forward to visiting again.

    Excellent Accommodation

The staff at the facility were all very friendly, making our stay extremely pleasant. The food was truly delicious, and we enjoyed it in a private room at a relaxed pace. The Onsen was wonderful, and the complimentary drinks on the second floor were also excellent. There was even a service to take us to nearby tourist spots (stone steps, ropeway). Although the nearest parking lot was slightly narrow, they allowed us to use two spaces, so parking was stress-free. The welcome drink and dessert in the first-floor lobby were also great!

While searching for an accommodation with a private open-air bath in Ikaho Onsen, I found Matsumotoro. The beautifully renovated room with stunning views from the large windows, the onsen available anytime, and the delicious meals were all absolutely satisfying. The staff were friendly and welcoming with warm smiles. I would love to stay at Matsumotoro again when visiting Ikaho Onsen.

The facility was very new and impeccably clean, making our stay extremely comfortable. Additionally, as it is a child-friendly accommodation, the staff handled our child's mishaps with genuine smiles, allowing us to enjoy a relaxing holiday. Overall, everything was highly satisfactory; however, the dinner menu had some unique combinations that might not suit everyone's taste. The breakfast was delicious. It would also be great if there were light switches in the hallway to make it easier to move around after putting children to bed.

    Ikaho offers excellent hot springs.

The view from the Room was amazing!!

I chose this accommodation aiming to enjoy both the Golden Onsen and Silver Onsen, but beyond the joy of the hot springs, the view from my room (5th floor) was exceptional. The sight of snow-covered peaks in the distance beyond nearby mountains wrapped in greenery was like a painting framed by the window. Sitting on the sofa provided in the room, I enjoyed a moment of deep inspiration. The meals, room, and baths were all highly satisfying, but I was especially impressed by the excellent service provided by staff at reception and in the dining area.
