    End-of-the-Century Onsen Shelter

Once you enter via the single access road, there’s no turning back. This is a truly rare Onsen shelter where, if the road were blocked, you could even live self-sufficiently. The meals were excellent—well worth the price and very satisfying. The Onsen was so good that I soaked four times. It’s a place I’d like to visit again.

    Second stay

Although it was extremely hot, we were blessed with good weather and were able to relax. Driving from Kyoto via the national highway felt far (since we have a kei car and can get pressured on the expressway). The first time, we stayed at Nisshokan. This time, due to renovations, we stayed at Nagisakan—it was spacious and we could take our time. I had knee surgery in February and worked hard through painful rehabilitation, so being able to finally enjoy the Onsen again was truly wonderful. Everyone at the Hotel was kind, and it was very soothing. Thank you very much.

    Disappointing Hotel Urashima

The Onsen “Bokido” was wonderful, but the escalator to the Sanjokan building was slippery with oil, the meals were underwhelming, one elevator to Sanjokan was out of service, and in our Room at Sanjokan it was too cold with the air conditioning on and too hot when it was off. Overall, I felt there would be very few repeat guests in this condition.

    Stay on May 22

We stayed as a couple. The room was spacious and comfortable for two. However, it might be a good idea to clean the dust from the ventilation fan. The staff service was excellent. In particular, the shuttle bus driver on the way there drove very carefully and, after we arrived, kindly told us about check-in times and where the restrooms were located. The bath and meals lived up to their reputation—especially the bath, which felt like another world. There didn’t seem to be many guests, but the roughly five-minute escalator had a unique charm. I hope you continue operating it. That said, it was disappointing that the general goods shop in the large space had closed in early May; this lowered my satisfaction by one point. Unfortunately, due to bad weather we couldn’t see the sunset, sunrise, or stars (not related to my rating), but we really enjoyed relaxing while taking in the view from the observation deck.

    First Time in Urashima

We visited with two men and two women. The baths and the Onsen were very nice. The meals were also good, and the sashimi was delicious. However, the dining venue was far away, which was difficult for a friend with mobility issues. It would be great if meals could be served in each building. The Room connected a Western-style room and a Japanese-style room, but those sleeping in the Japanese-style room said the futons were too thin and their bodies hurt. A mattress is needed. Only one elevator inside the building could be used, and there was no notice, so many guests were confused. Improvements are needed. At the dining area, it would be helpful to have soy sauce available in several places throughout the space.

Although it has been a while since my last stay and the staff seemed a bit short-handed, I was satisfied.

A landmark Hotel in the area

I stayed in a Room with a Pacific Ocean view. The horizon was beautiful. The step up to enter the Room also gave it a real Onsen Ryokan feel. The Hotel staff are very international, and even senior team members are actively working. I’d been wanting to visit the cave bath for a long time, so I was very satisfied. Since the showers and similar areas basically connect to the outdoors, it might feel a bit cold on windy days. The Facility is huge—like a small town. Dinner was delicious. Breakfast is served in a style where you grill your own fish—just be careful not to eat it raw by mistake!

Family Trip for Our Wedding Anniversary

We originally planned to stay at Sangokan, but chose to stay at Nagisakan to attend the “Ennichi Urashima Tuna Festival.” The tuna carving show was excellent. If Sangokan offered similar events, along with an all-you-can-eat fresh tuna buffet and all-you-can-drink alcohol like Nagisakan, we would have stayed at Sangokan. The Onsen was also wonderful, so next time we would like to stay again with priority on the tuna carving show, all-you-can-eat fresh tuna, and all-you-can-drink alcohol.

    Although renovations...

Although renovations seem to be underway, it was disappointing to see signs of aging in the main building’s Facility and some areas where cleaning did not seem thorough, such as noticeable dust. It was also disappointing that there were no shower caps provided in the bathroom. Breakfast and dinner were buffet-style, but especially at dinner most dishes were fairly ordinary with few standout items, and the tuna we had hoped for was not particularly exceptional. However, there was a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, which we enjoyed 충분ly.

Are there five ranks in the travel agency’s rating system?

I stayed at Sangokan for a Multiple Night Stay. Arriving by sightseeing boat is a unique and enjoyable approach that you don’t often find at other hotels. The boats run frequently, so you don’t have to wait long. However, there is no way to get from the pier to Kii-Katsuura Station except on foot, which could be difficult with heavy luggage—I think it takes more than five minutes even if you walk quickly. For reference, the luxury hotel on the neighboring island offered a Shuttle Service from the pier to the station, which reflects the difference in price. The Hotel’s standout feature is the bath at Bokyoto Cave—an open-air bath that has been here for nearly 70 years! On this day, strong easterly winds sent powerful waves crashing against the rocks in front of the cave, and even sea spray reached inside, making it very impressive. The changing area feels outdated, and especially the locker keys were loose and rattly. There was also a rock bath near Nisshokan, but it’s far and not nearly as dramatic, so it’s probably not worth going out of your way. Dinner is a buffet, but it’s more of a half-buffet style: five kinds of sashimi plates including tuna and Kumano beef shabu-shabu were already set on our table. The desserts were also high quality. Dinner times seem to be managed by Reservation slots every 30 minutes from 6:00 p.m., which likely helps seating go smoothly without waiting. The buffet lines never got long enough to be stressful, and table spacing was comfortable. After dinner, there isn’t really anywhere to spend time—just karaoke and table tennis. Even if you start dinner late, you’ll finish shortly after 8:00 p.m., so after that your options are basically bathing or using paid massage chairs. Given the Hotel’s capacity, I’d like to see some additional ideas or facilities for evening relaxation.

    The Onsen was great.

The Onsen was great. However, the property is large, so it was difficult for me, as I have trouble walking, because the distance between the Onsens was too far.

    Onsen Wonderland

The main attraction here is the cave bath. If you love Onsen, you should visit at least once—it’s breathtaking. In summer, there may be sea slaters, so winter is recommended. The Accommodation itself is about on the level of a school trip, but it’s truly a Showa-era wonderland—never boring and practically a cultural asset. The meals are surprisingly good, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The Facility is vast, with several Onsen areas, including two separate cave baths. Katsuura is far even from Kansai, and considering the size of the place, I recommend staying two nights. Also, there are no private baths or anything like that—there’s absolutely no romantic vibe—so it may not be ideal for brand-new couples.

The content was significantly different from the previous time.

A few years ago, I stayed here and had an excellent experience with both the meals and the bath, so this was my second visit. This time, I stayed in the same "Yamajokan Suite Room with Open-Air Bath on the Pacific Ocean Side (Non-Smoking) (Japanese-Style Room)." For two people, we booked this top-tier room at 104,280 yen. During my previous stay, meals were served in a private dining room featuring luxurious kaiseki cuisine with high-quality ingredients like lobster. However, this time it was a buffet in a large hall. The all-you-can-eat crab had almost no meat inside, and the limited-quantity crab miso disappeared instantly (my wife even joked that it might not have been there to begin with since only an empty plate remained). The variety, taste, and quality of dishes such as sashimi at the buffet were disappointing and far from enjoyable. At checkout time the next day, there was a sign advising early checkout due to expected crowds; however, we still waited in line for 30–40 minutes. After checking out and heading to the shuttle bus stop for parking lot access, we encountered another long line. To our surprise—and dismay—we stood waiting without seating for about an hour and a half. Although we left our room before 10 AM for checkout purposes by hotel guidance standards—by reaching our car parked outside—it was nearly noon. While appearing healthy outwardly—I suffer from severe back pain issues—and standing so long made me anxious about triggering another episode of acute back pain during prolonged waits unnecessarily imposed upon guests unconditionally without alternatives provided whatsoever! Given how crowded things get regularly known beforehand operationally speaking—solutions like closer parking facilities or designated taxi stands should exist instead! My family had a disappointing experience.

We stayed as a family on New Year's Eve to see the first sunrise of the year. There was a car stopper near the main lobby, and both my grandchild and elderly husband tripped over it. While we understand that it is an old hotel with many steps, we hope for more flat surfaces where possible. The grandchildren enjoyed the New Year's Eve fireworks, the first sunrise, and the tuna cutting show, making it a memorable stay for our family.

    Disappointing Experience

I was looking forward to reaching the Hotel by boat, but upon arriving at the parking lot, I was directed to a shuttle bus and informed on the bus that the boat service was suspended. There was no notice about the suspension on the website, nor any explanation at the Hotel. This disappointing experience upon arrival ruined what should have been an enjoyable trip.

I have always stayed at Hotel Urashima whenever visiting Katsuura in Wakayama, and this time I stayed for three days and two nights. I relaxed in a spacious room on the top floor of the main building, enjoyed all the baths, and even received a prize. The buffet offered an abundance of dishes that were more than enough to satisfy me. Every year, I look forward to staying here again next year. I had a wonderful time with my father. Thank you very much for everything. Looking forward to visiting again!

    Old and spacious

The building is old; some renovations might be worth considering. The Onsen was good. The Facility is spacious, but moving around can be challenging. Meals were served at the Yamajokan, and the buffet had a wide variety, which was nice. There were many foreign guests. Service was good. While there are positive aspects, the overall impression is that it feels outdated and worn out. Honestly, it doesn't feel worth the price paid. I visited Bokido Cave but probably won't return for a second time.

Relax and enjoy a full day.

The cave Onsen is wonderful, with slightly different water qualities. Some have a strong Onsen smell, while others are milder. The indoor bath feels like a public bathhouse, but the cave experience is excellent. The seaside area was refreshing. It opens early in the morning before sunrise. The room is spacious, though the TV was small (around 32 inches). The bathroom has separate hot and cold water taps that need manual adjustment, but since it’s not a unit bath and the toilet is separate, you can relax comfortably. Both the dinner and breakfast buffets offered a wide variety of dishes and were very enjoyable.

I decided to stay at Hotel Urashima's Yamajokan after watching a suspense drama (the protagonist stayed at Nagisakan). The meals were different from the drama, but I think they had a decent quality. The Onsen "Bokido" is famous, but I found "Genbudo" more impressive as the waves came close to the bath, creating an exciting atmosphere. This is one of the hotels I would like to stay at again.

    It was an interesting place.

The famous cave bath was an amazing experience and very enjoyable. The Hotel itself is spacious, with a long escalator that added an attraction-like charm. However, there are two points that need improvement: 1. The trash bin in the Room's toilet had items left by previous guests, which was unpleasant. Even if the Room appears clean at first glance, such details can undermine trust in management. 2. For those arriving by car, you park at a designated parking lot and take a shuttle bus to the Hotel. However, the address provided in the Hotel's email for the parking lot was "441-16," but when entered into navigation systems, it only accepted "441-1," leading to an incorrect location. When I called for clarification, the woman who answered spoke curtly and said "It's 441" in a harsh tone as if annoyed. If this is due to your error in notation, please notice and correct it promptly. Other than that staff member’s response, all other staff were kind and greeted lost guests warmly within the facility, making our stay pleasant overall despite this disappointment.

Once you experience this bath, there's no going back.

It was an Onsen experience that I can confidently say was the best of my life. I had the chance to bathe while powerful white waves crashed against the shore during a stormy sea, which was truly breathtaking. I felt that knowing about this bath and experiencing it could genuinely enrich one's life. I will definitely visit again. However, one concern: I experienced anaphylaxis while sleeping, and when I woke up in the morning, my face was swollen. Since I don't have allergies to dust mites or dust itself, I suspect it might be related to anti-mite treatments or sprays used on the bedding. Could you please provide information regarding this? I would love to revisit and would appreciate any details for future reference.

I’d love to experience a cave-style bath at least once, but…

I stayed at Nisshokan for a Multiple Night Stay of two nights. I’m glad I was able to experience the cave Onsen. Also, although it was a bit far, the view from Noroshiyama Observatory was great. The dinner buffet had delicious draft beer, and there was a wide variety of tasty dishes. However, while the view from the glass windows by the elevator area at Nisshokan was nice, it was disappointing that the outside of the glass did not appear to be cleaned. Perhaps because I stayed in the lowest-priced Room with no view, it may have been different, but the toilet’s washlet displayed “preparing” for more than two minutes and took a long time before it could be used. Also, since the hot water temperature was low and felt like cold water, I requested repairs; I was told it was due to a boiler issue and that hot water was now available, but it remained cold. In addition, there was dust on the air conditioner vent outlet, mold on the bottom edge of the shower curtain, and dirt on the underside of the toilet seat—overall, I felt maintenance and cleaning were not thorough.

    Cave Bath

The cave bath was truly breathtaking, just as shown in the photos! The onsen made me feel warm instantly! However, the hotel itself is too spacious... I chose a room in the main building, but the dining area was far... and so was the bath. I had researched beforehand, but it really was far! (laughs) Still, that's understandable. That said, I booked a Japanese-style room and was informed that futons would be laid out during dinner time. However, they came to lay out the futons while we were still relaxing in the room (even before our dinner time). That felt a bit... disappointing.

It was a bit disappointing. It lacks a sense of luxury.

The view of the sea and the cave Onsen were unique and enjoyable. However, the building is quite old. I understand that prices are higher during Obon, but 160,000 yen for four people in a suite on the mountain with breakfast and dinner felt expensive. The Room was Japanese-style, but there was an unpleasant smell (possibly from animals like mice?) coming from either the air conditioner or somewhere in the Room. It was truly disappointing. The staff in the mountain area were mostly from overseas and did not speak much Japanese. It lacks a sense of luxury; it's more suited for families to have fun together casually. I'm sorry to say this, but I don't think I'll be returning next time.

    It was very disappointing.

This is my first time posting such a disappointing review after staying at domestic accommodations. First, the shuttle bus from the parking lot was a microbus with no space for luggage, and we had to load it ourselves. The only available space to place our luggage was on the seats, which was surprising. Upon arrival at the hotel, there was no one to greet us, and we had to unload our luggage by ourselves again. The front desk had a long queue where we waited for some time. After receiving a facility map, we were left to move on our own to the Mountain Lodge building. The distance to the elevator was extremely far, which I believe would be very challenging for elderly guests with mobility issues. The corner Japanese-Western style room in the Mountain Lodge that I reserved offered an excellent view; however, contrary to what was described on the site as having a bath with a washing area, it came with just a unit bath like those found in business hotels. The only positive aspect of this stay was that all staff members were kind and provided polite service—this includes those at the Mountain Lodge front desk, restaurant staff during dinner service, and even those who assisted us when there were issues with laundry facilities. I had high expectations for the cave bath but found it smaller than what appeared in photos. Moreover, its location being so far from our room made me lose interest in going altogether. My friends who accompanied me also chose not to visit since there was an exclusive onsen within the Mountain Lodge itself. As for meals: dinner consisted of kaiseki dishes served one by one; they were well-prepared and enjoyable in a calm atmosphere. However, during breakfast (a semi-buffet), there wasn’t any prior explanation about individual pots of freshly cooked rice provided per person—I ended up serving myself rice from the buffet instead and missed out on enjoying freshly steamed rice. Check-out time being as early as 10 AM caused congestion around that period according to reviews I read beforehand; completing check-out by 8:30 AM turned out wise indeed. Returning back via shuttle bus required waiting again while dealing with limited seating due partly due luggage occupying seat spaces—this likely restricts how many passengers can board each trip efficiently. While I appreciate your hospitality during my stay here overall—it’s unfortunate but certain that I won’t be returning again in future visits based upon this experience.
