    Expectation...

    The response from the front desk and parking staff was disappointing as they declined requests without confirming them first. It was surprising to see an older staff member noisily clearing tables right next to us during our meal, despite many other empty tables being available. Even though there were many other diners, it felt like we were being rushed to leave, which made it hard to enjoy the meal. The young staff member who explained things at the beginning was very kind and helpful, which made the dining experience even more disappointing in comparison. The Onsen and the view from the room were excellent.

    A Hotel with a Heartfelt Touch

    The hotel was spacious and welcoming. They helped carry our luggage from the entrance to the lounge, and the front desk staff were very pleasant. We hadn't made a reservation for the Earthquake Storytelling Bus Tour, but when we asked if we could still join, they assured us that they adjust the number of buses based on participants, so it was fine. Since it showed as unavailable online through Jalan, we were relieved. The front desk staff also seemed genuinely happy and thanked us for participating, which made us feel even better. Inside the hotel, there were records of the earthquake and local products from Ishikawa Prefecture being sold as part of recovery support efforts. It warmed my heart to see this awareness extending beyond just one region. The bus tour itself is highly recommended for anyone visiting Minamisanriku Town—it’s an experience worth having. Many families with children participated as well, which I think is great educationally. Seeing the actual site left me in shock at how high the tsunami reached. Dinner featured luxurious ingredients like abalone, sea urchin, shark fin soup, and crab—all delicious! My husband and I agreed that considering this meal alone made our stay feel very reasonably priced. Breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes! We went at 7 AM—the earliest time available—so we could join the bus tour afterward; despite being a large-scale operation, everything went smoothly. We enjoyed soaking in the onsen both after dinner and before breakfast; if you want to enjoy views of the ocean fully, I recommend going during daylight hours! The water temperature was perfect with soothing sounds from what resembled a waterfall—it was incredibly relaxing. This is a hotel I’d love to continue supporting in future visits!

    A Hotel with Excellent Onsen and Great Value for Money

    The Facility itself seems old, but it is well-maintained, clean, and comfortable. The staff were pleasant, the meals were delicious, and we could stay at a reasonable price even during the Obon holiday. Our child enjoyed interacting with seagulls and participating in the meteor shower observation event. One downside was that the child's meal portion was small, and additional white rice was not available. However, since there was plenty of food for adults to share, it turned out just right in the end. The Onsen had a great view and perfect temperature—absolutely amazing. As mentioned in other Reviews, the phone support from the online Reservation team is poor. Perhaps that's why they are assigned to online Reservations only. Since IKYU Reservations do not allow you to include children in your booking details online, a phone call becomes necessary—and their response left us feeling slightly uneasy. However, everyone who transferred our call or assisted us on-site was wonderful! We had an excellent stay overall. Thank you very much!

    The Onsen is simply amazing.

    The open-air bath with an ocean view was amazing. I enjoyed the sunrise from the bath, watching the path of the sun. The sauna with a sea view was also fantastic. Post-bath beer is available for an additional charge and was excellent. It was a bit disappointing that there was no cold water bath in the sauna. The food, including grilled abalone, shell-on sea urchin, and shark fin, was incredibly delicious. The seagulls visiting the balcony were adorable!

    All staff members are very friendly and helpful.

    The pool was a hit with the kids, bringing them so much joy. The dedication and gratitude of the staff in their daily operations as part of the recovery from 3.11 were truly inspiring. The sea urchin rice bowl was the most delicious I've ever had in my life. Above all, the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. The welcome drink was refreshing and perfect for cooling down on a summer day—absolutely delightful!

    Reconstruction Support Trip

    We have visited several times with family and friends, but this time we stayed with relatives from Kyushu. One of our purposes was to join the storytelling bus tour. The Ryokan offered a spacious and comfortable environment, and we were deeply moved by the seaside Onsen and the sunrise. Although our dinner was served last, the staff's kind words to take our time allowed us to enjoy a pleasant evening. The drink prices were reasonably set, and the abalone steak was impressively large. Our relatives also appreciated the rare local dishes. During this stay, we discovered for the first time that there is a rooftop where you can enjoy stargazing. Not only were the stars breathtaking, but so was the moonlit path stretching over the sea. After breakfast, we joined a storytelling bus tour that took us to several locations where explanations were provided. Our relatives seemed at a loss for words as they witnessed current realities firsthand. This was our second time on such a tour; however, since destinations change each time, we learned about different places and episodes compared to before. We realized anew how events from past disasters are still present everywhere and never-ending in their impact. The storytelling bus tours are based on experiences shared by local staff who lived through these disasters—a story of passing down memories that remains unforgettable. We look forward to visiting again to enjoy Minamisanriku’s nature and cuisine while seeing how reconstruction efforts continue in this beautiful area!

    We had a thoroughly satisfying stay.

    We stayed here for a long-awaited family trip. It is a very splendid Hotel where we were able to relax and enjoy quality time together as a family. The meals were delicious, with generous portions that left us fully satisfied. From our Room, we could see the ocean, and seagulls came by, allowing us to feed them—a unique experience we don't usually get to have. We also joined the storytelling tour organized by the Hotel and learned many stories about the earthquake disaster. If we visit Sanriku again, we would love to stay here once more!

    The Storyteller Bus is highly recommended.

    It was a delightful trip with seven mom friends. The Onsen at the Hotel had an incredible view and was absolutely amazing. The serene and calm sea was so beautiful that it was hard to believe a tsunami once struck here. The guide on the storytelling bus had an excellent voice and narrative style, which moved us deeply and taught us a lot. We could clearly see the efforts of everyone in Sanriku to ensure these memories are not forgotten. The sightseeing Shuttle Service is an extremely valuable offering. I would love to visit again with my family next time.

    Excellent scenery, service, dining, and open-air baths.

    Thanks to you, I was able to relax after a long time. The Room on the top floor had a great view, was clean, and the meals were satisfying. Above all, the warm-hearted hospitality and service were wonderful. I would love to stay here again.

    Great hospitality and excellent cuisine.

    This Hotel, which can accommodate 1,300 guests, limits Reservations to about half its capacity even on the day before holidays to focus on customer service. As a result, front desk operations are smooth, all staff members greet you with smiles, and while there is no meat dish offered, the seafood options such as abalone sashimi, sea urchin in shell, seafood rice bowl are excellent. Alcohol orders are also handled efficiently. What impressed me most was the bath facilities. The cleanliness is impeccable and being able to use the large public bath and open-air bath from 4 AM is truly appreciated. I stayed in a Room facing the mountain since I was traveling alone; it was spacious with thorough cleaning and double windows for insulation—perfect even for winter visits while still offering a sense of openness. The breakfast venue offers a buffet at one location. Initially worried about finding seats due to crowding concerns but was pleasantly surprised by how quickly tables were cleared and disinfected by an efficient team of staff. I travel domestically around ten times annually using Reviews on IKYU.com as my guide—and they rarely disappoint (about 90% accuracy). Nowadays it's rare for Hotels where staff wave goodbye with smiles when sending off individual cars or provide Shuttle Service from parking lots several meters away back up-to-the entrance via microbuses! Amongst Hotels visited over recent years their hospitality ranks top-notch among first-second places overall experiences including non-compromised morning buffets leaving me fully satisfied!

    Overall, it was a satisfying Hotel.

    Despite checking in on a rainy day with the sea and sky completely white, we were able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise and sparkling sea from our Room the next morning. The large public bath on the second floor also faced the sea, providing a pleasant atmosphere. We enjoyed meals recommended by the head chef in a private dining room. While the snow crab was slightly lacking in flavor, possibly due to being out of season, the sashimi was delicious, and we were served piping hot fried rockfish along with satisfying dishes like grilled abalone. Alcoholic beverages were reasonably priced as well. Breakfast was served buffet-style and overall very tasty. Both the Hotel interior and guest rooms appeared clean and well-maintained. We participated in a storytelling tour hosted by the Hotel in the morning, which is highly recommended for everyone. Although it departs at 8:45 AM requiring an early start to your day, it is worth joining as it supports efforts to keep memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake alive.

    A wonderful Hotel with exceptional hospitality

    In 2011, the year our child was born, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. Fourteen years later, on our child's 14th birthday, we took a trip to Minamisanriku and stayed for one night at Hotel Kanyo. As many others have said, it was simply wonderful. This is not only due to the building and the delicious dinner and breakfast but also thanks to the warm expressions, words, and most of all, the heartfelt smiles of all the staff that naturally made us want to say thank you. Dinner featured incredibly tender and plump abalone like we've never had before, along with sea urchin and crab rice cooked with local ingredients unique to Sanriku. Our child was especially moved by their first taste of abalone. The bath allowed us to relax while gazing at the magnificent ocean right in front of us. Although distance may be a challenge, we will definitely visit again with our child next time! Thank you so much!

    It was a wonderful trip. Thank you! The building has some age, but it is well-maintained and not bothersome. The meals offered a wide variety of dishes, including fresh seafood. Above all, the staff were outstanding—very friendly, kind, and made the stay incredibly comfortable. I also joined the storytelling bus tour and found it to be an excellent initiative to learn about local experiences. I hope this effort continues for a long time so that more people can understand the fear of earthquakes. This has become an accommodation I would love to visit again.

    Enjoy breathtaking views and a relaxing atmosphere.

    The view from the Hotel was truly amazing, and I wished I could have stayed longer. The welcome drink, a mix of mandarin orange and apple vinegar, was absolutely delicious. Both the bath and meals were extremely satisfying. Although it had been a while since dining in a shared space with other guests, the spacious venue made it comfortable to relax and enjoy my time. Additionally, due to an unexpected schedule change requiring an early departure in the morning, I deeply appreciated that rice balls were prepared for me—thank you so much! They were delicious, and thanks to your kindness, I was able to fulfill my wish of visiting Tashirojima Island. I would love to visit again someday. Thank you very much to all the staff at the Hotel for taking care of me!

    I had a relaxing time.

    Despite the busy Golden Week period, I was able to relax. The sound of seagulls and gentle waves from the guest room was soothing. While the spacious interior was a plus, it was unfortunate that the men's large public bath was far away (and the elevator took time to arrive). The weather was perfect, and the view from the rooftop was spectacular.

    I booked through this site for the lowest price. The dinner included a delicious oyster hot pot, fresh sashimi, and surf clams with a decent variety of dishes. The sake tasting set came in three cute bottles and was very affordable—I ended up drinking too much! Breakfast was served in a banquet hall, which felt a bit unsettled, and the content was average. However, I enjoyed the rich yogurt from Ryusendo Cave—it was delightful. The accommodation fee included a "Storyteller Bus" tour that visited three locations while listening to real stories from the earthquake disaster. Additionally, they provided transportation to Sendai Station with mini sightseeing stops (two roadside stations for restroom breaks), which was excellent!

    The ocean view from the window was stunningly beautiful. The room was more spacious than expected. I thought it would have been even more pleasant if the windows were cleaner. **Meals** *Dinner* I was a bit worried at first, but when I tried it, the presentation was impressive, and the taste was absolutely delicious. Each dish seemed to be prepared with great care, and the dining area had a clean and welcoming atmosphere. I left feeling completely full and would love to eat there again. *Breakfast* I didn’t have breakfast, so I can’t comment on that. The staff were all polite, professional, and wonderful. The Onsen experience was also fantastic. Especially the sauna—it’s unfortunate that it was cloudy during my visit so I couldn’t see much of a view—but the scenery looked beautiful nonetheless, and the scent of wood added to its charm. Watching a sunrise from there must be amazing! The semi-private makeup rooms were very convenient as well. It would be reassuring if there were hydration stations in the changing area to prevent dehydration concerns. The water temperature wasn’t too hot, making for a relaxing soak.     The meals are fantastic!

    We stayed as a group of six, including an elderly member. The building has a nostalgic Showa-era feel but is very clean. We enjoyed the Welcome Soup and looked forward to the bath, where we could relax while gazing at the Pacific Ocean and occasionally hearing seagulls. The highlight was definitely the food. The chef's recommended plan featured a variety of delicious local dishes served one after another, each more delightful than the last. This meal has now become my No.1 among all hotel dining experiences I've had in over six years! The seagull that came to our room window was adorable and added to our enjoyment. If I may suggest areas for improvement, it would be addressing room power outlets and Wi-Fi connectivity. While there was one extension cord provided, it felt insufficient in this era where everyone has their own smartphone. Additionally, Wi-Fi became difficult to connect to during nighttime hours. Despite these minor issues, this accommodation has become one of the places I’d love to visit again!

    Sanriku Reconstruction Drinking Party?

    Every year, I stay at a hotel in the Sanriku area after attending festivals in Miyagi Prefecture. How many times have I stayed at this hotel? I've lost count! I’ve been visiting since before the earthquake, but after the disaster, I especially wanted to support accommodations in the Sanriku region. That said, my main focus is on enjoying drinks! Starting with draft beer at the "Post-Bath Lounge" after a relaxing soak! The accommodation plan includes a private room with "Premium Sendai Beef and Abalone Grilled on a Ceramic Plate." From draft beer to shochu bottles and sake! The staff member who kindly attended to our group of four drink enthusiasts was very helpful! It was unfortunate that the snack bar wasn’t open on weekdays as it used to be, but we had fun again at the late-night snack corner. Hopefully, we didn’t disturb other guests—something I reflected on later... The Onsen is spacious and allows for leisurely bathing—it’s almost big enough to swim in (though of course, we didn’t!). Even during cold weather, the outdoor bath is delightful for relaxing. The view from our 9th-floor room was fantastic; seagulls flew by and even came close to our window. You can enjoy breathtaking views of what seemed like oyster or mekabu farms spread across an expansive ocean horizon—truly stunning scenery! Breakfast is served buffet-style with so many options that it’s impossible to try everything! From sashimi to shark fin soup early in the morning—the variety fills up your tray quickly with luxurious dishes that leave you completely satisfied. But don’t worry—I made sure not to waste any food by finishing everything off! Guests I've brought along before were always delighted too, so this is definitely an accommodation I'd love to visit again someday!

    A relaxing and delicious journey.

    We stayed here for one night during our 2-night, 3-day trip. We were especially looking forward to the Onsen and fresh seafood! The seagulls mentioned on the website perched on the railing outside our room, gazing at us adorably. The room and bath were beautifully renovated, thoroughly cleaned, and we felt warm hospitality throughout our stay. (The cold draft beer after the Onsen was reasonably priced at 380 yen! There was also a welcome soup near the front desk.) Dinner was served in a private room, allowing us to enjoy it quietly and leisurely. The main dish was "whole abalone grilled on a hot plate," which was incredibly tender with a delightful ocean aroma. For those of us over 60 years old, the portions were slightly too large; it would be great if there were options for dinner courses—such as seafood-focused courses prioritizing quality over quantity or meat dishes with larger portions for younger guests. The open-air bath faced the sea, letting us fully enjoy nature with its ocean breeze and scent of saltwater. The next day’s Onsen had mountain views, so we got to experience both sea and mountains. The staff's thoughtfulness left a lasting impression on us. This is definitely one of the accommodations we'd love to visit again. Thank you for your hospitality!

    I was healed!

    The Shuttle Service to Sendai Station is truly appreciated! Both the shark fin and abalone were really delicious! I was impressed by how hard the young staff members were working despite their age! It was very relaxing... I definitely want to visit again! Thank you very much!!

    The semi-cave open-air bath is excellent.

    I visited again in late autumn because I had a good experience with the bath and meals in spring. The bath is an open-air semi-cave bath overlooking the sea, providing a liberating feeling. The meals include courses with shark fin and Shizugawa octopus, but I chose the same abalone dancing grill and beef ceramic plate grill course as last time. The abalone was tender and had no odor, and the beef ceramic plate grill was also tender, not too fatty, and delicious. The sashimi was also made with local ingredients and was delicious. For breakfast, there were plenty of accompaniments for rice and bread, but about half of them were ready-made. The dining room has the atmosphere of a banquet hall. The building is not new, but it is a Hotel that evokes the good old days when locals used to gather there. In fact, during the great earthquake, it served as a shelter and protected the locals, and even now, they are engaged in activities to pass on the stories of the earthquake. I would like to visit again while going for a drive.

    Large public bath and open-air bath, starry sky, sunrise... A Property to fully enjoy the beauty of the sea.

    When you open the door to the bath, the first thing that catches your eye is Shizugawa Bay. The large glass windows stretch from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, with sparkling white tiles creating an incredibly bright and inviting large public bath! Additionally, the open-air bath offers an infinity-like view that seems to merge with the sea, designed with a cozy cave-like atmosphere. This time, it was Wednesday, and the next morning, the large public baths were switched between men and women, allowing us to enjoy both baths. The women’s open-air bath is particularly unique and interesting. For dinner, we indulged in the bounty of the sea, including abalone, shark fin, sashimi, crab, and sea urchin rice cooked in a pot. The sweetness and deliciousness of the especially large medium fatty tuna reminded me of the excellence of Minamisanriku! For breakfast, my first-time friend was delighted with the abundance of seafood, but for me, it was all about the bread. Of course, the ever-popular croissants were amazing, but the olive bread and cranberry bread were just as delightful as last time. I enjoyed them with the incredibly rich Iwaizumi yogurt, apples, and shark fin soup. I also tried the cod roe with spicy mentaiko flavor, but I couldn’t help but think how wonderful it would be to enjoy such delicious, plump cod roe with the sweet and savory taste of traditional simmered cod! My first-time friend also seemed satisfied with the stargazing event held by volunteers on the rooftop "Shiokaze no Sora," where they observed constellations like Orion. We came this time hoping to see the path of light on the sea at sunrise, which we missed last time due to cloudy skies. Since it was winter, the sunrise came from beyond the southern peninsula, and although there were low clouds over the sea both the day before and that morning, we managed to catch a glimpse of the path of light. However, it made us think we must visit again in summer! Just before departure, a seagull finally came to the window of our Room. Thanks to the convenient Shuttle Service between Sendai Station and the Hotel, I definitely want to visit again. Next time, I’d love to try the luxurious dinner that the guests at the neighboring table were enjoying!

    I visited for the purpose of the Tsunami Storyteller Bus.

    The storyteller bus itself was very good. The facility is an old tourist hotel, but I felt it was well-maintained. I had some expectations after seeing reviews that the food was delicious, but I wondered if it was really true for a large tourist ryokan. As expected, it was disappointing. I felt even more disappointed because I had high expectations. The onsen was enjoyed by the children, and I would like to visit again if I have the opportunity to go nearby.

    The view is wonderful.

    I stayed on New Year's Day. It is a large property, but the facility, meals, and scenery are all good. However, what caught my attention was: ① There were slippers in the room's toilet labeled "Otearai," but I think regular slippers would suffice. It felt Showa-style. ② There were staff wearing kimonos at the breakfast venue and at the hotel entrance after checkout, but they were just standing there without guiding guests to the breakfast venue or greeting them, so I think they should be properly trained.

    Stayed over New Year...

    Stayed over New Year's. The food allowed us to enjoy the New Year's atmosphere, and combined with the bath offering the best view, we were very satisfied. Above all, the sunrise over the sea seen from the lounge was the best.

    I went with my mother.

    I went with my husband and my mother, who has a slight difficulty with her legs! It was my first visit in about 25 years, and both the bath and the meals were still great. The staff were kind, thank you very much. It was nice that the dinner wasn't a buffet for a change.

    I think it's a good Hotel.

    The view was very nice, the Facility was clean, and the staff's hospitality was excellent. The availability of a shuttle bus was very helpful. There was also a shuttle sightseeing bus exclusive for guests, which I found very kind. Unfortunately, I couldn't participate this time due to circumstances, but I would love to join next time. The stargazing experience was my first, and I was very moved to see Saturn and constellations with the naked eye. The explanations were thorough, and I thought it was a service that couldn't be experienced at other Facilities. I think it offers good value for the price. One concern was that the slippers prepared in the Room were old and torn, so I would like them to be replaced. Also, I personally think that Samui would be more comfortable to move in than a yukata. Thank you very much.

    Meals and Facility

    The meal was left to the chef's choice, but the portions were too large for us, an elderly couple, so we left most of it. It was all seafood, so we were very disappointed as we made the reservation thinking there would be at least one meat dish. We were disappointed to hear that those who made reservations on other sites had delicious steak included. Also, the washlet's cleaning water was cold, so we mentioned it to the front desk when we left, but we would like it to be checked during cleaning.
