The travel distance is…
I returned because the food was excellent last year. This year again, I enjoyed everything from grilled abalone to shark fin, and even added sea squirt as an extra order. Everything was delicious. Since it was a relatively cool Obon holiday period, it was nice to be able to take my time in the baths. Because I have trouble with my legs, I requested a Japanese/Western-style Room, and as last year I was placed in a Room right by the elevator in the South Wing. However, again like last year, even on the lowest setting the air conditioner cooled too much, so I turned it off partway through. Personally, since my legs are not strong, I think having a chair at the sink would be helpful. After staying twice, what I felt was that both the baths and the dining venue are in the East Wing, so having to walk quite a distance each time was a bit difficult. If I had stayed in the East Wing, my impression might have been different. Also, especially for the baths: after passing through the noren curtain there is a long tatami-lined corridor leading to the changing area. On tatami it feels awkward to use a cane, so this was very challenging for me. There is also access via an internal staircase from another floor closer to the South Wing bath area, but because of my leg issues I avoided going up and down stairs while undressed. The open-air bath also requires going down a long set of stairs after exiting through a door, so it may be somewhat difficult for guests with mobility impairments. Even so, the seaside open-air bath felt wonderful. It’s a spacious Hotel and relatively reasonably priced, so I think families with small children can feel comfortable staying here as well.

The atmosphere felt ...
The atmosphere felt like an Accommodation suited for group stays (in fact, it seemed a school trip group was staying there), but surprisingly it was quiet and relaxing. In particular, the large Onsen public bath on the second floor was very spacious, clean, and had a wonderful view. The school trip students appeared to have reserved the indoor bath in a separate building, so we were able to enjoy this spacious public bath at our leisure. We also enjoyed seafood dishes in a private dining room. The attendant who served our meals was very pleasant as well. In our Room, black-tailed gulls came right up close to the window—it was my first time seeing them from such a short distance. The only downside was that there were too few power outlets in the Room.

View from the Room and the Onsen
We stayed as a family. Our Room was a corner Room with a wonderful view, and the Onsen was excellent. The meals were very delicious and we were very satisfied. The black-tailed gulls were adorable. It was a pity that we couldn’t see the sunrise because it rained, but we look forward to next time. Thank you very much.

Everything is just right.
I have stayed here several times, but this was my first visit in winter. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed the beautiful ocean view from the open-air bath. Every meal was high quality yet comfortingly down-to-earth, and everything felt just right—it's one of my favorite places. We will definitely be back.

Stayed during the New Year!
The staff were very kind and attentive, even though there were many guests on this day. The food was delicious and plentiful, with the shark fin and abalone being exceptional! However, it was disappointing that the temperature of the outdoor bath water was very low. Perhaps it couldn't be helped due to the cold outside temperature, but it felt like a missed opportunity. Other than that, everything was excellent!

First, there was no ...
First, there was no greeting at the entrance. While unloading our luggage, we were only asked if we were staying and directed to the parking lot. We informed them that we would check in around 5:30 PM, but the Room was completely dark with no heating on, which surprised us. It was so cold that for about an hour while waiting for the Room to warm up, everyone had to wear their coats. Later, we moved to the dinner venue where the food was luxurious and very delicious. When we returned to our Room an hour later, they were still setting up the futons—likely due to a shortage of staff—so we went back to spend time in the lobby before returning again. Upon opening the door, our outdoor shoes were scattered around messily. We had been looking forward to this stay but ended up feeling very disappointed. Being welcomed into a dark and cold Room was truly shocking.

A beautiful Ryokan with delicious fish.
Seagulls gather in large numbers outside the window. The contrast between the calmness of the sea and the activity of the seagulls creates a truly unique and fascinating experience. Thank you for upgrading us to a sea-view side as well.

Hospitality with a Smile
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our autumn trip to Minamisanriku, largely thanks to the exceptional experience at Minamisanriku Hotel Kanyo. From the moment we checked in, we were warmly greeted with smiles, and it was impressive to see all the staff working happily and cheerfully throughout the accommodation. Attention to detail was evident everywhere. Dinner exceeded our expectations with its delicious seafood. The grilled abalone, assorted sashimi platter, and seafood kamameshi were all incredibly tasty. The portions were just right, making for a highly satisfying meal. The breakfast buffet was well-organized with thoughtful flow lines, allowing us to enjoy a relaxed meal even in a spacious venue. The breakfast offerings were also very satisfying. The highlight of our stay was watching the sunrise from the open-air bath. Seeing the mountain ridges turn orange as the sun rose while soaking in the bath was an unparalleled experience—a breathtaking view that felt almost otherworldly. The quality of the hot spring water was excellent as well, earning high praise from my wife too. In addition, enjoying an ice-cold draft beer after an evening soak added another layer of delight. This stay turned out to be an experience beyond what we had imagined. We left for home discussing how certain we are about returning again someday. Thank you so much for everything! Please continue preserving what makes Minamisanriku Hotel Kanyo so special!

Anniversary Trip
When we mentioned at the reception that it was our birth month and anniversary, we asked if there could be a surprise even if it incurred a fee. To our delight, we received drink tickets and a dessert plate at dinner with "Congratulations" written in chocolate pen. We were deeply touched by this thoughtful gesture—thank you so much! The meals were plentiful, and the abalone was incredibly tender and delicious. The bath, especially the open-air one, was amazing with its expansive layout where we even watched the sunrise. Of course, the view from the Room was also breathtaking. Everything exceeded our expectations!

Simply outstanding.
We stayed as a couple. The room was a corner Japanese-style room with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. We were delighted by the many black-tailed gulls that came to visit. The food was exceptional, and the sashimi was incredibly delicious. The abalone, shark fin, and simmered fish were all flawless. The stargazing event was enjoyable, and we could see the Milky Way with the naked eye. The guide's explanations were also entertaining. The open-air bath lived up to its excellent reputation—absolutely perfect! The hotel staff had wonderful smiles and made us feel welcome throughout our stay. The entire accommodation exuded a strong desire to please its guests, truly deserving its ranking as 15th in Japan's Top 100 Ryokan list overall. Next time, I will definitely bring my daughter's family along!

Stayed with relatives.
I organized a trip with my relatives and chose this hotel's Abalone Grilled Plan. The view of the calm sea from the East Wing room was so pleasant that I wanted to keep looking at it forever. Seagulls came to visit as well. The meals were all delicious, and although I usually leave some food, this time I finished everything. The grilled abalone with butter and lemon seasoning was exquisite. The hotel is large, spacious, and very clean. The bath area is also wide, and enjoying the ocean view from the open-air bath was fantastic. We used the storytelling bus about the earthquake disaster; however, during the staff's explanation, other guests were chatting loudly, which was disturbing. I couldn't understand why those guests joined this storytelling bus in the first place. We used a shuttle service bus from Sendai Station, which made everything very convenient for us. My relatives who stayed with me were also very pleased with their experience here. I observed how kind and attentive all staff members were in their service—it truly reflects an admirable company philosophy. Thank you very much!

A Hotel You’ll Want to Return To
I didn't know the history of the Hotel, but I was able to learn more by joining the storytelling tour. Both the meals and Onsen were great. I even got to see the sunrise during the morning Onsen, which made it a lucky day. I would love to come back again. Feeding shrimp crackers to seagulls from my Room was also a delightful experience.

Everything is excellent.
I stayed for one night during my first trip to Minamisanriku. The room had a classic design, and I was able to see seagulls perched on the window railing up close. Although there was a group reservation, the receptionist kindly informed me of the best time to use the bath, so I could enjoy it without any crowds. At breakfast, I was slightly worried about potential congestion in the large dining hall, but the buffet layout was well-organized, allowing for a smooth dining experience. The staff's attention to detail and hospitality were exceptional!

Ocean view right in ...
Ocean view right in front of you! Upon entering the room (East Wing), seagulls greeted us on the balcony, and the view was perfect. I enjoyed a relaxing time soaking in the Onsen with my cousin. (The smell of hypochlorous acid water in the open-air bath was quite strong, but perhaps unavoidable.) Dinner featured an array of fresh seafood, and we were able to enjoy additional Ise lobster sashimi at a very reasonable price. However, possibly due to a staff shortage, dishes like octopus sashimi and chawanmushi arrived just as we were finishing, and unfortunately, we couldn't finish the octopus sashimi. Additionally, I noticed dust on the ventilation fan in the bathroom of the room.

Thank you, IKYU, for the introduction.
It was wonderful. Seagulls? Black-tailed gulls? As soon as you open the curtains, they greet you. The Room, the food, and the bath were all satisfying. We came as a couple to celebrate a 60th birthday. Next time, we want to bring our children along.

Retro Luxury Hotel
A hotel that evokes the retro charm of the Showa era and the luxurious memories of the bubble period, similar to New Akao in Atami. The ocean-view Onsen is on the hotter side but offers breathtaking scenery. With a shuttle service, shops, a rooftop, a pool, and an Onsen, there's everything you need to enjoy your stay. Strolling around inside the hotel was also delightful. Despite being during Obon weekend, we were able to enjoy luxurious seafood like abalone and sea urchin at an incredibly reasonable price—something unimaginable in Kanto! We are truly grateful for this experience. Breakfast was well-organized with smooth flow lines; even though it was crowded, there were no issues finding or enjoying what we wanted to eat. It was also wonderful to see young staff members and international interns actively contributing during our stay.

It was a great vacation.
The bus connecting Sendai Station and the Hotel is very convenient. I am fully satisfied with both the food and service. The 3.11-related exhibition in the lounge was educational. I will visit again.

The view from the Room and the staff's hospitality were excellent at this Hotel. I was deeply moved after learning about their activities during the Great East Japan Earthquake. The valuable stories I heard on the storytelling tour are something I want to share with those around me. Thank you very much.

Seagulls will welcome you.
For the first day of our Multiple Night Stay, we chose the simplest meal Plan. It included a variety of dishes and a satisfying amount of food, which we were happy with. We also ordered freshly stocked Pacific saury sashimi as an option. The Room's bathroom was a convenient home-style type with a separate bathtub and washing area. When we opened the curtains, seagulls were perched outside. We bought some shrimp crackers to feed them, and they all gathered around—it was such an enjoyable experience!

The cuisine and hospitality were satisfying.
The food was delicious and satisfying. Especially the "Grilled Abalone," which was the softest I've ever had among various places. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options, both Japanese and Western styles. The arrangement of two identical food lines to avoid queues and the availability of carts for carrying trays made it easy to enjoy meals even in a large venue without stress. During the disaster memorial tour, we were guided through actual affected areas. We learned about incidents such as a school rooftop designated as an evacuation site being submerged or people taking photos on cliffs being struck by waves from behind, which gave us a real sense of the scale and terror of tsunamis. I joined the tour at 10 AM, where we were guided inside what is now an abandoned hall. Although it takes time, I highly recommend this experience. The staff members were very kind. During the disaster, they reportedly worked hard for both guests and evacuated residents while sometimes only having one piece of kamaboko fish cake themselves. Coincidentally, there was a concert in the lobby by students on a music high school training trip. Their performance as second-year high school students was truly moving. One small suggestion: It would be helpful to have guidance on whether to bring towels from your room when going to the bath.

With my wife
The breathtaking location overlooking Shizugawa Bay in Minamisanriku perfectly matches the name of the hotel, offering a serene view that is truly soothing. The staff were very kind and left a positive impression, making it a welcoming accommodation. However, one concern was the slight scent from the yukata and room, which might affect repeat visitors. I hope this remains an accommodation I would love to visit again!

Finally, I was able to visit.
I had wanted to visit for a long time, and finally made it this summer. I was able to enjoy the scenery, Onsen, and meals at great value. You can enjoy views of Shizugawa Bay not only from the bath but also from various glass-walled areas inside the hotel. The dinner was a seafood feast with an overwhelming amount of food that I couldn’t finish. It would be nice if there were a smaller portion option. Breakfast included delicious Western-style items like bread and yogurt. Although it is a large hotel where many things are systematized, there wasn’t enough explanation for guests to understand how things work, leaving me wondering about certain aspects during my stay. There was an AI assistance feature available, but it wasn’t very helpful. There aren’t many places nearby to stroll around, but I enjoyed spending time at a lobby concert that happened to be held during my visit. This hotel serves as a base for disaster recovery efforts and offers an excellent storytelling bus tour about the earthquake disaster recovery process. It taught me the importance of disaster preparedness while also making me emotional seeing areas that suffered immense damage. The new buildings and high seawalls built after reconstruction felt somewhat saddening. Though I initially thought it was too far away, there is free shuttle service from Sendai which makes visiting again much more appealing! Above all else, the value for money here is outstanding—making it easy to consider returning soon!

Dinner was excellent, with both sashimi and kamameshi being very delicious. The open-air bath offered a stunning view, absolutely perfect. The view from the room was also amazing, and the seagulls were adorable. However, it was disappointing that the restroom next to the elevator was in Japanese-style. Since we stayed as a group of five, we sometimes needed to use restrooms outside the room and were surprised by the Japanese-style setup. Additionally, there was no ice machine available, and having to pay for ice was unsatisfactory.

A relaxed and overall excellent accommodation
I have stayed here several times, and the location facing Shizugawa Bay is simply stunning. The view from the lobby upon entering always makes me go "Wow," no matter how many times I visit. While the Onsen may not have significant medicinal benefits, it is gentle enough for my wife with sensitive skin to enjoy for extended periods. The bath overlooking the sea is perfect for relaxation, even for those in good health. Being a large hotel, there are no issues with the size or cleanliness of the washing area. The meals are excellent, featuring standout dishes like abalone steak alongside subtle yet high-quality items—clearly prepared by skilled chefs. The service staff, though older in age, provide warm and charming hospitality that adds to the experience. The shuttle service to Sendai eliminates the need for a rental car and is very convenient. At departure, all staff gather to see guests off—a touching gesture that makes you realize how many people worked behind the scenes to make your stay enjoyable. It feels like a curtain call after a great performance and leaves you wanting to return again soon. In conclusion: an outstanding accommodation overall!

Highly satisfied!!
We visited on August 14th during Obon with three generations of our family, totaling five people. The hotel is very large and has well-equipped facilities. Since my father and I have difficulty walking, we requested a Japanese-Western style room near the elevator, which was very convenient. The room was clean and satisfactory overall, but the air conditioning only had three settings (high, medium, low), so it got too cold in the bedroom at night and we had to turn it off. As seafood lovers, we wanted to order additional dishes at check-in but were told that we could take our time reviewing the menu after settling into our room. This allowed us to avoid rushing at the busy counter. For dinner, we chose a plan that included one abalone per person for grilling. The abalone turned out to be larger than expected for an individual serving! The meal also included crab, sea urchin in its shell, simmered kinki fish, and even abalone & sea urchin rice as a finishing dish—an incredible seafood feast that left us completely satisfied! The additional sashimi platter with hoya (sea pineapple) in vinegar sauce and tempura was also fresh and delicious; even the children trying hoya for the first time loved it! There are two bath areas (located in different wings or floors), with an open-air bath offering stunning views of the ocean—it felt like being right by the sea! Watching the sunrise from there made it clear how well-located this hotel is. They also offer mahjong sets for rent (apparently used by professionals before matches!), which they kindly brought up to our room so we could enjoy playing as a family. This hotel truly satisfies all aspects of food, relaxation in hot springs, and entertainment—perfect for seafood enthusiasts! We learned that during the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster this hotel served as an evacuation site; there are exhibits showcasing its history during that time which added meaningful insight to our stay. It has become a favorite spot for our family. Next time we'd love to plan a Multiple Night Stay!

This time, it was a bit disappointing.
During our previous stay, we stayed in the East Wing with mountain-side Rooms for each of us, and everything from the lounge and bath views to the cuisine and service was rated 5. This time, we stayed in a Room in the South Wing with a single bed. While the abalone, sashimi, and service were still rated 5, I woke up with red spots on both legs after sleeping on the single bed. A dermatologist diagnosed it as mite bites and confirmed that it must have happened during our one-night stay in that Room. This is not a complaint but rather feedback to encourage better mite prevention measures for Rooms with single beds moving forward. When I called about this issue, your response was understanding: "We will take care moving forward." As a big fan of IKYU.com who has booked over 50 domestic trips through your platform as a Platinum Member, I reflected that perhaps requesting new facilities might be better next time since costs are similar. Please note this is just an example of what happened; you do not need to publish this content. My wife also suggested simply reporting it to IKYU.com as feedback. On another positive note, my grandchild's kids' meal request was perfectly accommodated. We have already made Reservations for next week at Takinami in Yamagata through IKYU.com due to its high ratings after renovations. Thank you again for your continued excellent service!

Expectation...
The response from the front desk and parking staff was disappointing as they declined requests without confirming them first. It was surprising to see an older staff member noisily clearing tables right next to us during our meal, despite many other empty tables being available. Even though there were many other diners, it felt like we were being rushed to leave, which made it hard to enjoy the meal. The young staff member who explained things at the beginning was very kind and helpful, which made the dining experience even more disappointing in comparison. The Onsen and the view from the room were excellent.

A Hotel with a Heartfelt Touch
The hotel was spacious and welcoming. They helped carry our luggage from the entrance to the lounge, and the front desk staff were very pleasant. We hadn't made a reservation for the Earthquake Storytelling Bus Tour, but when we asked if we could still join, they assured us that they adjust the number of buses based on participants, so it was fine. Since it showed as unavailable online through Jalan, we were relieved. The front desk staff also seemed genuinely happy and thanked us for participating, which made us feel even better. Inside the hotel, there were records of the earthquake and local products from Ishikawa Prefecture being sold as part of recovery support efforts. It warmed my heart to see this awareness extending beyond just one region. The bus tour itself is highly recommended for anyone visiting Minamisanriku Town—it’s an experience worth having. Many families with children participated as well, which I think is great educationally. Seeing the actual site left me in shock at how high the tsunami reached. Dinner featured luxurious ingredients like abalone, sea urchin, shark fin soup, and crab—all delicious! My husband and I agreed that considering this meal alone made our stay feel very reasonably priced. Breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes! We went at 7 AM—the earliest time available—so we could join the bus tour afterward; despite being a large-scale operation, everything went smoothly. We enjoyed soaking in the onsen both after dinner and before breakfast; if you want to enjoy views of the ocean fully, I recommend going during daylight hours! The water temperature was perfect with soothing sounds from what resembled a waterfall—it was incredibly relaxing. This is a hotel I’d love to continue supporting in future visits!

A Hotel with Excellent Onsen and Great Value for Money
The Facility itself seems old, but it is well-maintained, clean, and comfortable. The staff were pleasant, the meals were delicious, and we could stay at a reasonable price even during the Obon holiday. Our child enjoyed interacting with seagulls and participating in the meteor shower observation event. One downside was that the child's meal portion was small, and additional white rice was not available. However, since there was plenty of food for adults to share, it turned out just right in the end. The Onsen had a great view and perfect temperature—absolutely amazing. As mentioned in other Reviews, the phone support from the online Reservation team is poor. Perhaps that's why they are assigned to online Reservations only. Since IKYU Reservations do not allow you to include children in your booking details online, a phone call becomes necessary—and their response left us feeling slightly uneasy. However, everyone who transferred our call or assisted us on-site was wonderful! We had an excellent stay overall. Thank you very much!

The Onsen is simply amazing.
The open-air bath with an ocean view was amazing. I enjoyed the sunrise from the bath, watching the path of the sun. The sauna with a sea view was also fantastic. Post-bath beer is available for an additional charge and was excellent. It was a bit disappointing that there was no cold water bath in the sauna. The food, including grilled abalone, shell-on sea urchin, and shark fin, was incredibly delicious. The seagulls visiting the balcony were adorable!
