    In-Room Open-Air Bath

    I stayed in a room with a private open-air bath, but it seemed that the bath is cleaned only on Wednesdays each week, which was unpleasant. Shouldn’t it be cleaned after each guest checks out? It was far too unhygienic.

    At check-in, only our party had to wait quite a long time to be escorted to our Room, which felt a bit unfair. It would have been helpful if you could have simply given us the key and the Room number, but perhaps the building’s extensions and renovations make it easy to get lost. Other than that, everything was excellent. The Room was spacious, new, and very clean, and the terrace bath had silky water. The location was wonderful and very relaxing. The meals were creative, and we were satisfied with both the quality and quantity. Since it was still cold, it would have been nice to have a padded kimono-style jacket in the Room. We would love to stay again if we have another opportunity.

    The hospitality was excellent.

    The building’s Facilities are old, but the warm, smiling service from the female Hotel staff was wonderful, and I felt great throughout my stay. The food was delicious and there was more than I could finish. The ocean view from the Room and the lounge was also outstanding. If I had to mention one thing, our table at mealtime was by the window, but a table further inside (counter-style) faced toward the windows, and it bothered me that our table naturally came into their line of sight. In that case, I wish the window-side seating had been counter-style instead. The view from our table was great. That said, for this price, I was very satisfied with both the luxurious meals and the service! I’d love to stay again.

    The Onsen, meals, and Room were all excellent.

    The spacious open-air Onsen bath in the room was great. In summer it’s hot, so you might not use the Onsen much, since there’s a pool and the beach. We enjoyed our stay even outside the peak season. The meals let us fully experience Izu and Shimoda.

    We stayed here again, following our visit last month.

    We enjoyed a great value stay by using IKYU Points. To be honest, some of the facilities feel a bit dated, but everything is well cleaned, and the staff’s hospitality is excellent, making for a very comfortable stay. The meals are not particularly luxurious, but the broth and seasoning were expertly done and delicious. We also appreciated the on-site facilities for surfing. From next month onward, we won’t know our Shimoda travel dates in advance, but if there is availability, we would love to stay at Yamato-kan again. I can recommend it to everyone.

    A pleasant Hotel where you can enjoy the sea of Izu and magnificent scenery.

    We took the Shuttle Service bus from Shimoda Station. When we arrived at the Hotel, we were shown to a lounge with a large window overlooking the ocean. Being able to check in there was a nice touch. The tea and sweets served there were delicious, so we bought some at the shop on our way home. The Hotel itself is quite old, but it didn’t feel cramped or dark, and it was clean. Above all, every staff member we met in the building greeted us with a smile, so we felt comfortable throughout our stay. Our Room had a spacious balcony, so I sat back in a chair and watched the sea for a while. We came to relax, so being able to enjoy this view from any Room is truly wonderful. The indoor bath in the large public bath also has big windows, so even without going out to the open-air bath you can still enjoy an airy, open feeling—this was great too! The meals—especially the fish—were better than expected. I saw a Review somewhere complaining about portion sizes, but it was more than enough for us. It probably depends on the Plan; since there wasn’t really anything meat-focused, that might feel lacking for men or younger guests. Everything was delicious—I even finished all of the rice served in an ohitsu at breakfast. A couple of disappointing points: the Room amenities. There was only one small packet of powdered tea; even just two tea bags would have made relaxing in the Room after dinner more enjoyable. Also, access to the large public bath is by stairs only. I’d like to bring my elderly mother next time, but that might be difficult. And it was strange that our Room door had frosted glass and you could see into part of the interior near where the room number is displayed. Since there’s an interior hallway and sliding doors inside (so closing them solves it), it wasn’t a major issue—but it was my first time seeing that kind of setup. Overall, nothing beats that dynamic ocean view right in front of you. In summer you can enjoy both the pool and the beach as well, so I think this Hotel is perfect for families too. I’ve already recommended it to coworkers with children.

    The simmered golden eye snapper is exquisite.

    We stayed for one or two nights over the three-day weekend in February. We had a relaxing time. The staff were kind, and the meals were excellent—especially the simmered golden eye snapper—so we were very satisfied. One point to note: we chose in-room dining for both dinner and breakfast, but having breakfast served in the Room made it a bit hard to fully relax due to setting a wake-up time, so I think that could be improved.

    We had a wonderful time.

    I went on a trip with my boyfriend, whom I reunited with after five years, and we stayed at this Ryokan for the first time in a long while. The woman who assisted us was so funny and wonderful—she livened up our dinner table and showed us such thoughtful, attentive care. Thanks to her, we were able to spend an amazing and truly satisfying time. We would love to stay here again!!

    I am very satisfied.

    During the spring cherry blossom season in Minami, we have stayed here several times because of the convenient location, the wonderful view from the Room, the delicious meals, and above all, the attentive service from all staff. This time, the service was even better—so good that it felt almost undeserved for what we paid—and I felt it more than made up for the age of the facilities.

    A Getaway from Everyday Life

    This was my second stay. I found Yamatokan when I wanted a healing trip for my birthday, and since it was wonderful last year, I came back at the same time this year. I could truly switch off and do nothing. The sky changes throughout the day, so I enjoyed the Onsen again and again. Soaking in the Onsen under a sky full of stars at night was an amazing experience. The meals were excellent too—there were new dishes on the menu, and I also got to enjoy their consistently great simmered golden eye snapper. It’s perfect for a digital detox, so I highly recommend it when you want to escape everyday life. I’ll be back!

    It was a cozy accommodation.

    We stayed for two nights. From check-in to check-out, the staff consistently greeted us and showed genuine hospitality. During meals, they didn’t force conversation on me when I wanted to eat quietly, while kindly engaging with guests who seemed eager to chat—this was excellent. The Room was also very satisfying, with a pleasant open-air bath view and a comfortable wood deck. On the other hand, the public bath area felt noticeably dated, especially the Western-style bath. Even so, since we used a guest Room with an open-air bath, it was a wonderful two-day stay overall. Thank you very much.

    The open-air bath at...

    The open-air bath at the mountaintop was breathtaking, and the open-air bath attached to the Room also offered a wonderful view of the sea. All of the staff greeted us in a friendly manner. We would love to come again.

    Solo travel.

    I prefer accommodations with onsen water in the room since I’m not a fan of large public baths. The room I stayed in this time had both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, both filled with onsen water. The open-air bath faced the ocean, allowing me to relax without worrying about being seen by others—truly liberating. It was exceptional. The food was also delicious. Choosing the course that included spiny lobster and abalone was definitely the right decision. What impressed me most was the warmth of all the staff members who provided their services. While staff at other accommodations I've stayed at were friendly as well, having meals served in my room made it feel especially thoughtful this time. From the check-in staff to those assisting during check-out, the guide who showed us around, the dining staff, and even the foreign staff member handling futon arrangements—everyone was so kind. I felt so relaxed that I ended up sleeping until 8 a.m., which is rare for me when traveling! This is definitely an accommodation I would love to visit again.

    Winter Open-Air Bath at Its Best

    This was not my first visit, but it might be my first time experiencing the outdoor bath in winter! Once again, I enjoyed a room with an open-air bath. Last time, the bath was square-shaped, but this time it was a ceramic one—my first experience with that! The food was delicious and there was so much that I couldn’t even finish it all! Such a luxurious treat—I’m so happy!! The sunset view was quite beautiful, which made me even happier! Overall, this Ryokan has such charm and is truly wonderful. This time I visited with friends, but next time I’d like to come back as a way to show appreciation to my parents.

    First Winter Trip to Izu

    We stayed as a couple in our sixties. We have been visiting Izu frequently for about 40 years, but it’s usually in the summer. This time, to celebrate my wife’s birthday, we decided on our first winter trip to Izu and chose to stay at Yamato-kan, which we had been curious about for some time. As mentioned in the reviews, everything was perfect: the hospitality, the view from the room, the clean yet classic room and facilities despite their age, delicious meals, private open-air bath in the room, large public bath—everything! If it were a natural hot spring with free-flowing water directly from its source (onsen), it would score beyond perfect at 120 points! Being an established ryokan with around 60 years of history (I think?), there are signs of aging; however, you can tell they put great effort into renovations and cleaning. Above all else, every staff member was so pleasant that we felt like cheering them on. In an era where contactless accommodations are increasing, their personal touch warmed our hearts. To my surprise and delight, many of their staff were young people around my son or daughter’s age! During dinner service they even surprised us by singing “Happy Birthday,” which moved us deeply. We stayed in a Wide Deck Room with a spacious deck offering great views. Even though it was January and wintertime wasn’t too cold during daytime hours—we enjoyed gazing at the ocean by day & stargazing by night while relaxing outdoors together as husband-and-wife quality bonding moments. Thank you for creating such memorable experiences—we’ll definitely be back again!

    The meals are absolutely exceptional!

    Stayed during the year-end holidays. The accommodation has an old-fashioned feel with some modern updates, so it's best not to expect too much from the facility. The room we stayed in had an open-air bath on the balcony, but the room itself was of a traditional style. However, the view from the open-air bath was absolutely stunning. What stood out most was dinner and breakfast—both were incredibly satisfying in terms of quantity and quality. While not elaborate dishes, they featured simple menus that highlighted high-quality ingredients and were absolutely delicious. The highlight of dinner was a grand serving of simmered golden-eye snapper at the end, while breakfast included a fun activity where you could grill your choice of dried fish on-site—a big hit with our family!

    Is this an Onsen?

    The room with Onsen was not warm enough, making it too cold to use both in the morning and at night. Additionally, even the hot water supply was lukewarm, which made shaving inconvenient. The public bath was inaccessible due to tattoo restrictions, so it didn’t feel like an Onsen Hotel to me. On the other hand, the staff's hospitality was excellent, and I thought the food tasted great. However, if you can't enjoy the Onsen, I feel it's overpriced. Is this really what Shimoda Onsen has to offer?

    Heavenly Accommodation

    It was truly a heavenly Ryokan. The warmth of the staff, the meticulous hospitality—everything was perfect. The view of the ocean from the room was stunning, and spending time listening to the sound of waves was so soothing that it made me forget my daily life. Each dish in the meal was carefully prepared, allowing us to fully enjoy seasonal flavors. The Onsen offered an open-air experience that felt like being one with the sea, both in the morning and at night—it was simply amazing. This is a Ryokan I genuinely want to visit again.     Newly renovated and beautifully refreshed!

    I stayed right after the renewal opening. Previously, the Facility felt a bit outdated, but now it has been completely refreshed. The meals offer great value for money and are comparable to Ryokans that charge about 50% more. There aren't many amenities in the Room, so it's better to bring your own. The open-air bath on the mountain is fantastic, but it would be nice to have even a simple washing area. At the very least, having a bucket to pour water before entering would be helpful.

    I was satisfied.

    The building itself felt a bit old and seasoned, but it was partially renovated and maintained clean. (Although the blackened grout in the bathroom tiles caught my attention.) The view from the Room was absolutely stunning, and soaking in the private open-air bath attached to the Room was incredibly relaxing. Additionally, every meal was delicious, and all staff members provided warm hospitality that left me very satisfied.

    The best Ryokan in Izu.

    With prices in the 20,000 yen range, this Ryokan offers an open-air bath and two meals, including Ise lobster sashimi and freshly grilled abalone right before your eyes. It truly felt like a miracle of Izu. The staff were all attentive and provided exceptional hospitality. The large public bath features six different types of baths, each of high quality and incredibly satisfying. This is a Ryokan you can confidently recommend for special occasions or bringing your loved ones for a memorable stay. It was the first time in a while that I felt completely satisfied from the bottom of my heart at such a wonderful Ryokan. Thank you very much!

    The open-air bath is amazing!

    I booked a room with an open-air bath for my birthday! The ocean view from the lounge we were shown to upon arrival was breathtaking, and the welcome drink we received was absolutely delicious. I was amazed when I entered the room! The calming Japanese-style room had a traditional Ryokan feel, and the sparkling blue sea view was stunning. I’m so glad I chose a room with an open-air bath that could be used anytime—it truly felt worth it. The meals were incredible, featuring dishes like simmered golden eye snapper and spiny lobster, full of fresh seafood delights. Every staff member greeted us warmly wherever we went, making our stay pleasant right up until our departure. It was such a relaxing time during my last summer vacation as a university student, spending it peacefully with my friend. Thank you so much!!

    Thank you for your support this year.

    I stayed here for two nights again this summer. The view from the room is absolutely stunning. Each room has a terrace with chairs, allowing you to enjoy the sunset sky with a beer in hand or gaze at the countless stars at night. You can also see the beautiful Tatado Beach from the Onsen. While some parts show signs of aging as it has been here for decades, everything is well-maintained with care. The meals are worth more than their price—absolutely satisfying! The staff are all friendly, making it truly relaxing.

    Amazing Accommodation

    I stayed in a Western-style room with an open-air bath for the first time. The room was so beautifully renovated that I was deeply impressed. From the room, I enjoyed a great view and could relax in the open-air bath while listening to the sound of waves. The starry sky from the terrace was amazing—such scenery is rare in the city, and it moved me again. Both dinner and breakfast were served in the room, allowing for a very relaxing experience. The staff were incredibly kind, and their smiles were wonderful. In times when such accommodations are becoming rare, I truly appreciated their hospitality. Even in September, I enjoyed surfing and swimming at the beach wearing swimwear—it was fantastic! I will definitely visit again next year!

    We visited with high expectations after reading reviews on the site and watching YouTube videos. 【Room】 The room is quite old, but it is well-cleaned. If you're looking for something modern, this might not be the place for you. At night, you can enjoy the onsen while gazing at a sky full of beautiful stars. It's truly moving since it's rare to see so many stars in Tokyo. 【Service】 The reviews gave very high ratings, but our expectations may have been too high. It seems there are seasonal staff members as well, and some interactions felt impersonal and mechanical. All staff were young with no experienced-looking personnel present at all. We hope to see an improvement in service quality in the future. 【Onsen】 Choosing a room with a private open-air bath was absolutely the right decision! We also tried the public bath, but unfortunately, it had a strong chlorine smell due to circulation systems—quite disappointing. The private open-air bath had no such odor and made us feel that visiting the public bath wasn’t necessary at all. With breathtaking ocean views right before your eyes and waves as background music, it was perfect. 【Facility】 The facility is undeniably old; however, considering its price point, they seem to be doing their best to maintain it well enough. It’s not recommended for those seeking modernity. 【Meals】 We opted for dinner and breakfast included in our stay. However, we felt rushed during meals as if they wanted us out quickly within a short time frame—it was hard to relax while eating or drinking because dishes were constantly being cleared away prematurely which left an unpleasant impression.     Highly Relaxing

    Stayed alone to relax during a break from work. Enjoyed a luxurious time with a spacious room, private open-air bath, and beautiful seaside view from the terrace. The seafood-rich meals were also incredibly delicious. There was a water outage in the morning, but it was quickly resolved, and all the staff responded courteously. It was truly a flawless 2-day stay. I look forward to staying again in autumn or winter.

    It was my second vis...

    It was my second visit in 20 years, and I was very satisfied just like the last time. The excellent view, unchanged from before, was the highlight for me. Additionally, many of the staff were young and provided very polite and pleasant service. The only disappointment was that this time meals were served in the dining area instead of in the Room, where surrounding noises and voices were a bit distracting.
