    The guest rooms are outdated.

Despite being a huge property spanning three buildings, there was no guidance at check-in, so I didn’t know where to go. I also had to wait in a long line; an automated check-in kiosk would help. The in-house guide brochure did not explain the features of the several baths, and overall information was insufficient. The Room felt old, damp, and musty with a moldy smell, which made it uncomfortable. The meals were disappointing because the local specialties (tama konnyaku and motsuni) were not tasty. On the other hand, the large public bath had been renovated and felt fairly new, and I was satisfied that there was also a sauna. I use a wheelchair, and in heavy rain the staff member at the entrance kindly held an umbrella for me; I really appreciated the thoughtful care. Thank you very much.

It feels less upscale than before.

It seems Oedo Onsen has stepped in to restructure the business, including profitability, but the cost-cutting is obvious and the overall quality has declined. The Room feels like a basic retreat facility. Even the way the futons were put away in the closet looked like it was done by a student. There was no tea, no snacks, and no tabi socks, and even the hand towel appeared to be reused. I can compromise if it’s cheap, but otherwise it doesn’t feel worth the price.

The worst possible Accommodation—this is not the pre-renovation Matsunoi.

Please note that Matsunoi (up to March 2026) and Oedo Onsen after the renovation are completely different, so be aware. There is nothing good except the Onsen and the Room (only those carried over from Matsunoi), so I will only write about the negatives. - Check-in With a large crowd, it takes 30 minutes to an hour just to check in. The only things confirmed while waiting were my name and the meal time (why does that take so long?). - Meals & drinks The dinner and breakfast buffet was terrible—the biggest change. All of Matsunoi’s menu items are gone, replaced with cheap, bland “standard Oedo Onsen” food. The sashimi was especially bad: only tuna and salmon, watery and soggy—hardly edible. A summary of what changed from before to after: Tuna nigiri made with bluefin delivered directly from Toyosu Market → thin, cheap-looking lean tuna like discount supermarket quality Sushi shaped by a chef → just rice topped with scrawny squid, steamed shrimp, salmon, and something like eel—worse than supermarket sushi Delicious Chinese dishes at Matsunoi → none; replaced by frozen spring rolls and yakisoba made with low-grade noodles Thick-cut steak grilled in an open kitchen → only two paper-thin slices (chewy like gum) Freshly squeezed juice made on the spot → watered-down soft drinks from a juice dispenser worse than a family restaurant Everything else was also mass-produced frozen food (it was being wheeled around on carts), all tasteless—like “feed for humans.” - Inside the property / atmosphere The lounge is packed with chairs crammed together; it’s always crowded, noisy, and not relaxing. Meanwhile, small resting areas that used to exist elsewhere—such as seating spots near the post-bath area—have been removed. There is nowhere calm except your Room. Banquet halls and traditional dining areas that Oedo Onsen no longer uses have been left as-is; they aren’t fully closed off either, so they remain in an unnatural way like abandoned spaces. You used to be able to step off the lawn in the Japanese garden area for a walk, but for some reason it has been marked off-limits. And this cost JPY 88,000 for two adults and one infant. At this level of quality—and at this price—I’ve decided I will never use any other Oedo Onsen or TAOYA properties again. For this amount you can find better Ryokan in Ikaho or Sarugakyo; if you want true hospitality, I’d rather pay more and stay at Bettei Senjuan.

    The room smells musty.

I understand that some confusion is inevitable right after a grand opening, but it felt like the property may have opened before reaching an adequate standard. The room was clean, but there was a strong musty smell. (The air conditioning did not work at all, and the humidity could not be reduced.) I realize it is an older building, but if asked whether I would stay again, I would not. At the restaurant, food replenishment was slow and there were significant waits. Also, it was disappointing to see tuna paste being refilled directly from a tube into the serving dish in front of guests. (I understand why, but some effort to preserve the experience seems necessary.) It made me wonder if this hotel is modeled after the Mercure in Yatsugatake, but it still feels far from that level. The meals were average with no particular highlights. This is a harsh review, but I hope things improve through continued optimization.

    My Favorite Accommodation

This is my favorite Accommodation, where you can enjoy a large bath and delicious meals at a reasonable price (I especially love Matsunoi’s Chinese cuisine). This time, I made a Reservation because my elderly father wanted to visit with his siblings, and he came home completely satisfied. Even after the renovation, I hope Matsunoi will keep what makes it special and that we can still enjoy the same delicious shrimp in chili sauce.

    Spring Break

It was the season, so there were many families with small children. The staff guided guests appropriately, and we were not kept waiting. This was especially true at dinner and breakfast. Older couples also seemed satisfied. There were many baths, and we were happy to be able to choose whichever we liked.

The Hotel is old, but the bathrooms and toilet interiors are very clean. The private Onsen was excellent, so I recommend you Reserve it as soon as you check in. Many of the staff are foreign trainees, but their service may be better than that of some inexperienced Japanese staff. The buffet is outstanding for both breakfast and dinner. The menu changes slightly depending on the day. There is a wide variety of dishes, and everything is delicious. There’s basically nothing around the Hotel besides Suwakyo Gorge, so having a car is essential. There is only one Times Car Share vehicle at the Hotel, but it gets fully booked immediately—if you plan to use it, be ready and make a Reservation at least a week in advance. In my case, I was able to rent a Times car located about a 10-minute walk away.

    Great value for money!

I was able to stay at a great price with an IKYU campaign. Since the rate was low, I didn’t have high expectations, but while the Hotel does feel a bit dated, the buffet food was delicious. The Onsen in the basement of the building where I stayed was excellent. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular.

    Great value for money.

The Onsen was excellent. There were several baths, and we really enjoyed them. The buffet offered a wide variety of dishes and the quality was great. It felt like very good value for the price. Highly recommended for families.

Staying on the water might be nice.

Honestly, I didn’t expect much at all, but it turned out to be far more satisfying than I anticipated. First of all, the price was very reasonable, and the balance between the cost and the services provided felt like a great deal. This time I booked the cheapest Room just to test things out, so there’s only so much to expect from the Room itself. There were a few quirks—like the toilet orientation—but it was within an acceptable range. Next time, I’ll choose a slightly larger Room. That said, the property is spacious enough to explore, the corridors are clean, and you can enjoy the Onsen as much as you like—overall excellent value for money. The water quality left my skin feeling smooth and pleasant, and there was no strong chlorine smell. I ended up enjoying every bath available. At the buffet, I didn’t want to waste food, so I tried small portions of various dishes and went back for seconds only on what I really liked. Maybe because other guests happened to be friendly as well, I had a very comfortable stay.

Although the property is old, it was very clean. The foreign staff were also very pleasant and did their best to assist us. However, given the low price, it can’t be helped that the dining area is very small and feels like a cafeteria. Also, not the Hotel’s fault, but the changing room was always messy... I think it’s fair for the price, and there were many baths so we didn’t get bored even over two nights.

The Onsen is very good. Everything else is in line with the price.

The Onsen was large and spacious, with baths at different temperatures, and it was very comfortable. This Accommodation seems to exist solely for enjoying the Onsen. The Room was a standard Japanese-style room, but the entire Room smelled like a toilet, and from the moment you enter it feels like living in a sewer. Thinking it might just be that particular Room, I spoke with the front desk and asked them to check the smell, but they said, “All Rooms are the same,” so unless you can move to a completely separate building, you may have no choice but to accept it. Also, both the front desk and dining area were staffed almost entirely by non-Japanese employees; even when I asked questions about things I didn’t understand, I only got vague answers like “Maybe OK.” At minimum, I would like them to be able to answer questions accurately or have someone knowledgeable take over. Meals are served buffet-style in a crowded dining hall. As for the advertised sushi, steak, and tempura: the sushi has an excessive amount of rice and is not served as tuna alone—instead it’s combined with cheaper seafood as a three-piece set on one plate to fill you up. The steak is tough rare meat that tires your jaw. The shrimp tempura uses thin, inexpensive shrimp. It’s quite calculated. It was an Accommodation that matched its price. If you don’t expect anything beyond the Onsen and can accept it as “it’s cheap,” you may be able to make use of it.

    It was a wonderful trip.

Although the property is a bit old, it was clean and relaxing. The bath and the meals were excellent. The bath left my skin feeling smooth, and the food—especially the sushi and steak—was particularly delicious. It also felt like great value for money with high quality overall. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

    The meals are excellent.

I suddenly felt like visiting an Onsen after a long time and made a last-minute reservation. The facility is spacious, and even with many guests, it didn’t feel crowded. The service was average, and the front desk staff left a rather indifferent impression. The dining area was quite crowded, but honestly, the food exceeded expectations with its variety and taste. It would have been even better if I could have enjoyed the meal more leisurely in a relaxed atmosphere. For the price paid, it was a very satisfying one-night stay. Thank you!

    The best Hotel for families

The hotel provided both excellent facilities and services. While it shows some age, it is well-maintained and thoroughly cleaned. Unlike large-scale hotels where cleaning can sometimes be lacking, this accommodation pays great attention to detail. Meals are served in a buffet style, and though it gets crowded, the operation is smooth, making it an ideal choice for families. I would definitely consider this accommodation again when visiting Mizukami! Thank you very much.

    Overcrowded and highly inconvenient

The room was ready upon our 2 PM arrival, allowing us to check in immediately. Afterward, we enjoyed the large public bath, but things took a turn for the worse. An overwhelming number of group guests arrived, causing chaos in both the lobby and the bath area. It was more crowded than a weekend super sento, which was extremely inconvenient for regular guests like us who came to enjoy a relaxing bath experience. In the bath area, groups of young people gathered noisily, leaving doors open and showing no sense of etiquette. When we asked a staff member about it, they mentioned that there were 400 group guests staying for a grand banquet where beer bottles were being opened continuously for over an hour. The noise echoed throughout the facility; after their event ended, they wandered around noisily as well—causing significant disturbance. While such groups may be beneficial for the accommodation's business, it completely ruined our experience as regular guests and turned our two-day stay into nothing but stress. Honestly speaking, I feel like requesting a refund on our Accommodation Fee. Since this is advertised as an "onsen accommodation," it would have been considerate to inform us at the time of reservation if such large groups would be present during our stay so we could decide accordingly. Despite heavy snow and cold weather outside—and how much we appreciated your baths—it was overall an incredibly disappointing stay. Not even one word of apology from any staff member...

A Joyful Start to the New Year

Stayed for one night starting January 2nd. The shuttle service from Jomo-Kogen made it easy to reach the accommodation smoothly. Upon check-in, as it was New Year's, we were treated to sake in a masu cup, mandarin oranges, and amazake before relaxing in the lounge and heading to our room. The room was assigned by the hotel but was spacious enough for two people and very comfortable. The private bath with a snowy view was stunning, making us truly glad we came. With so many baths available, we enjoyed soaking throughout our stay and were extremely satisfied. The dinner buffet exceeded expectations with its delicious offerings. After dinner, we watched a spectacular 7-minute fireworks display (a New Year event hosted by this hotel) from our room—it was truly amazing! For such an affordable price, we had an incredibly enjoyable start to the new year with great feelings of happiness. The facility was lively with many families around; I hope to visit again next time with my family. Thank you so much!

    This is my second stay.

The buffet was very delicious. Since it was the year-end, it was crowded, and we were guided to a very distant seat. As we had ordered free drinks, we had to get refills ourselves throughout the meal, so we couldn't fully enjoy a relaxed dining experience. The venue had changed compared to our stay in February. There were many foreign staff members, and while there were some communication issues when asking about drink options or inquiring about lost items, the service was excellent overall. This time, we booked two rooms; however, they were also located far apart from each other. I realized it's important to communicate specific requests in advance.

A large Ryokan featuring baths and buffet dining.

The three large Onsen baths are truly impressive. The buffet dining area can get crowded, but each dish is carefully prepared and of high quality. Since the buildings are separate, you may need to walk through cold corridors to reach the Onsen, which could be confusing for first-timers. There are few foreign guests, making it a stress-free way to enjoy an authentic Ryokan experience.

The quality of meals seems to have significantly declined.

I used to make a Reservation almost every month, but the quality of the steak for dinner has significantly declined over the past few months. The meat has become tough and difficult to eat. Even when sliced thinly, it contains many tendons, making it hard to chew unless you have strong chewing power. Elderly guests at nearby tables also left their steaks uneaten, saying they were too tough. I always looked forward to enjoying tender steak, so this is very disappointing. I would be happy if the quality of the meat could be restored as it would also please elderly guests. I regret not taking a photo of it. Additionally, the sushi toppings seem to have decreased in quality compared to before, which is also very disappointing. However, the white rice is consistently delicious every time. While I appreciate the baths and staff service being excellent, with this decline in food quality, I am considering whether or not to make a Reservation next time.

    We had a wonderful time!

I have stayed at this accommodation multiple times as it has been a favorite of mine for a long time. When I arrived at Minakami Station by train, I noticed shuttle services from other hotels, but I couldn't find the shuttle service for Matsunoi, which made me worried. In the past, it seemed like they were waiting even without prior notice, but this time I had to call in the snow and wait quite a while. Next time, I'll make sure to reserve in advance. At check-in, I received some sweets and was greeted with friendly service that put me in a good mood as I collected three room key cards and headed to the rooms. However, one room wouldn't open. When I called the front desk from another room's phone to report that we couldn't enter one of the rooms, they seemed puzzled about why we were calling from another room and told us to come to the front desk for replacement key cards. Why should we go pick up new key cards when we were given ones that didn't work? Shouldn't they bring them over? ... Well, we went anyway. After entering our rooms later on, although it took some time for the heating to work properly which was tough in winter weather, we enjoyed spacious rooms with beautiful snowy views. The onsen was relaxing; there was plenty of delicious food; and their wonderful hospitality left us very satisfied. We’ve used this accommodation two years in a row for our company’s year-end party and plan on returning next year as well! It’s truly one of my favorite accommodations!

    Excellent value for the price.

The Onsen was wonderful above all else. For this price, being able to enjoy such a great Onsen and having decent meals as well, there’s really nothing to complain about. However, the toilet in the Room was small and I didn’t really want to use it, and since the Room faced north it was cold. The counter table by the window was especially chilly, and the tea jacket was thin and sleeveless, so it felt cold even when going back and forth to the Onsen.

    Understood!

The quality of the meals and the Onsen at this price is excellent. Since the facility is large, it’s recommended for elderly guests to check in advance the distance between their room, the restaurant, and the Onsen. I will definitely come back with my children!

Savor the well-aged Onsen and enjoy a wide variety of buffet options to your heart's content.

Stayed for one night and two days on the first day of the last three-day weekend of the year. The room was a Japanese-Western style room on the 7th floor of Zuiunro, facing the river, offering stunning views of the Japanese garden and autumn foliage in the mountains. However, there was a bird "dropping" right in the center of the window, which slightly dampened our mood. The room itself had a somewhat "Showa-era" feel to it, and hallway noises were quite audible, leaving a slightly negative impression. That said, nothing could compare to experiencing pure Onsen with natural hot spring water directly flowing from its source—it brought an unparalleled sense of happiness. The buffet for both dinner and breakfast exceeded expectations and was highly satisfying. Despite many guests being present, it was easy to access food stations, and above all else—everything tasted delicious! Thank you for such wonderful meals. For future improvements: perhaps consider upgrading coffee service from pots to coffee makers as they are more common nowadays. Additionally, offering local specialties like honey could add more uniqueness to your buffet experience. Lastly, converting your pool into a heated pool during winter might encourage guests to spend more time at your Hotel (though I understand this may not be an easy change). Overall though—it’s definitely a Hotel I’d love to visit again! Thank you for taking care of us during our stay.

A Hotel worth repeating your stay.

I have visited every month this year, and I keep coming back. This time, the service from the senior lady at reception was excellent. Sometimes there are foreign staff at reception, but they also provide good service. This time, I stayed in a standard Room. However, the humidifier seemed to have been reused from a previous guest as it was half-filled with water and quite dirty when I removed the container to refill it. I contacted the front desk for a replacement, and while they did exchange it promptly, the staff member who came appeared to be new to Japan and replaced it silently without any apology. This was disappointing as such an experience has never happened before. The outdoor Onsen with floating autumn leaves was absolutely stunning—an amazing bath experience! The snowy night view from the bath was also wonderful. The meals were consistently good as always; however, one thing that stood out this time was that the steak meat felt tougher compared to before when it used to be well-prepared and tender. As for dessert, I think making the soft-serve ice cream slightly lighter would make it more unique and delicious compared to others. Overall, my stay was very enjoyable! The rice is always delicious here—I love it every time! I will definitely visit again soon!

    The Onsen was excellent.

This was my first stay here. From the warm welcome by the staff, everyone’s service was kind and pleasant. There are three Onsen bath areas plus private baths, and the spacious facilities—including well-equipped open-air baths—made it easy to relax and enjoy them many times. We had the dinner and breakfast buffet. While it wasn’t exactly luxurious, there was a wide variety of dishes, and items like freshly fried tempura and steak were delicious. One disappointment was that we stayed in a twin-bed Room, but it felt as small as a Business Hotel. The cleaning and upkeep seemed fine, but since this is an impressive, large Hotel with an older design, it made the small Room feel even more disappointing.

    Unfortunately.

The indoor bath was too cold to enjoy, which was disappointing. The dining experience felt rushed due to the large number of guests, and the guidance was not well-organized. While it is understandable that parking is far due to the size of the Hotel, shuttle service to the parking lot would have been appreciated, especially since it rained both days. The view was spectacular, so it was truly unfortunate not being able to relax in the bath.

    A Hotel worth repeating.

This was our first visit. Despite the current times, it was a lively and vibrant Hotel compared to others that seem quiet. The Hotel is spacious with plenty of baths, so we never felt crowded during our stay. The meals were buffet-style, and everything was incredibly delicious—we ended up eating too much! Highly recommended are the sushi, roast beef, and fried bread for breakfast. The staff were very kind and made us feel comfortable throughout our stay. Overall, it exceeded expectations for the price! We enjoyed a relaxing two-night stay as a couple.
