A truly hospitable accommodation.
A small Ryokan near Suwa Taisha Akimiya Shrine, with wonderfully friendly staff. The Rooms are on the second floor and require using the stairs, but your luggage will of course be carried for you. You can also enjoy delicious Japanese cuisine at a private dining room at a traditional restaurant, at a relaxed pace. With the Diamond benefits, we were able to use the private bath as well, which felt like a great value. This is an Accommodation that makes you want to stay again if you have the chance.

A historic Accommodation with wonderful hospitality
Four friends who love history and travel stayed using two Japanese-style Rooms. The welcome was warm, and the drink service in the lounge created in the Jodan-no-ma where Princess Kazunomiya once stayed was irresistible for history lovers—we enjoyed it many times. Facing a beautiful garden, we relaxed in a quiet space, and were very satisfied with the Onsen and dinner as well. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

The open-air bath was too hot for me to soak for long, which was disappointing. The service was excellent, and the sightseeing advice for the surrounding area was spot-on.

A long-established Ryokan near Suwa Taisha Shrine (Shimosha Akimiya)
This is a historic Ryokan located in the heart of Shimosuwa-juku on the Nakasendo. The Room had been renovated and was very clean. From the bath on the top floor, we could overlook the town of Shimosuwa and, beyond it, Lake Suwa—it had a wonderful atmosphere. Dinner was an elaborate Japanese set menu prepared by the head chef, and it was absolutely delicious. It is also close to Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya Shrine, making it convenient for sightseeing.

I felt very relaxed at this quiet Accommodation surrounded by tranquility.
We arrived a little early, kindly left our car, and took a stroll around the area. Right away, we visited Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya Shrine next door. In the backstreets of this historic townscape, you can find Onsen springs here and there—perfect for wandering at leisure. Both inside and outside the property felt very clean, showing careful management throughout. The staff’s smiles, service, and conversation were all refined; we truly felt their hospitality and attentiveness, which made our stay very comfortable. From the Room we stayed in—named “Kirishima”—we enjoyed a view of the grove surrounding Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya Shrine, full of charm and atmosphere. Both dinner and breakfast featured local ingredients, and everything was delicious. We could also sense how dedicated the staff were, which made dining even more enjoyable. Bathing in the panoramic large public bath while looking out over the townscape glowing at dusk was exceptional. The water was a gentle Onsen that seemed to softly cling to the skin. Although it wasn’t in our original plans, we stopped by Harmo Museum about 7–8 minutes away by car after receiving a recommendation as we checked out. Driving along the well-maintained lakeside of Lake Suwa and enjoying wonderful paintings became a great memory for us. It was a truly relaxing Accommodation for adults—wonderful in every way. Thank you very much.

A calm, adults-only accommodation
I made a last-minute Reservation due to an urgent matter (without reading the notice on your website), so I was disappointed to learn after arriving that the open-air bath was unavailable. I hope it will be restored soon. I understand that the proprietress and staff have been completely renewed, and I look forward to seeing this Accommodation reborn as an even more appealing place. I love Kameya, quietly nestled in the calm, charming streets of Shimosuwa. The Onsen is small, but the water quality is excellent and helps soothe injuries and physical discomfort. Drawn by Kameya’s refined facilities and atmosphere, I stay here whenever I have business in Nagano—even if it’s far from where I need to be. Thank you again for your hospitality; I look forward to staying with you again.

Thank you very much.
Our stay at Kameya began with the front desk staff’s wonderful greeting. After entering our Room and admiring the lush green garden below and the beautiful koi, we enjoyed delicious coffee in the upper sitting area. We then headed to the large public bath to relax for a while. Swallows were flying overhead. Dinner was also very delicious, and we truly enjoyed it. Thank you very much.

This is an Onsen Ryokan I would love to stay at again.
I made a Reservation to visit Suwa Taisha on my way back from Kamikochi. The cuisine was delicious, delicately presented with great taste, and I was impressed by the attentive service from the staff. The chopsticks were also easy to hold, with a gently rounded, slim grip about halfway up; I bought several as souvenirs for my family from the shop’s selection of 20 designs. This is a charming Ryokan that I would love to visit again. It is close to Suwa Taisha as well, and I recommend it as a rare Ryokan where you may have the chance to witness morning rituals by Shinto priests and shrine maidens.

Great experience—thanks to the staff.
This was my first time staying at a hotel like this. My friend and I came because we wanted a special onsen experience, and it exceeded our expectations. That was thanks to the wonderful lady who hosted us—she was incredibly helpful and provided thoughtful service. We felt truly rested, even though we stayed for only one night. I would recommend this place and would definitely love to come back. Thank you again for giving us such great memories. Stay energetic!

A Truly Traditional Japanese Ryokan with a Nostalgic Atmosphere
Because it was listed in the “casual” category, I visited without high expectations, but the food and service were excellent and far exceeded what I expected. That said, even considering it was during Golden Week, the price was quite high. The futon lacked a bit of cushioning, so for someone used to beds at international hotels it wasn’t very comfortable, and I’m not used to breakfast being served only up to 8:00. Fresh flowers were arranged throughout the Accommodation, and meals are served in a private dining room with greenery outside—an authentic kaiseki course. The flavors are light and refined in a way that (in a good sense) doesn’t feel typically Nagano. It may not suit those looking for classic local specialties, but we found everything very delicious. The reserved private bath in the basement has excellent water quality and an atmosphere that feels above “casual.” The staff member who guided us to our Room sat properly on their knees and opened and closed the sliding doors with great care—something you rarely see these days except at high-end traditional restaurants—and I found myself watching with admiration. Perhaps it is categorized as “casual” due to the Facilities or because there is no dedicated attendant for each guest room; however, including the beauty of such etiquette and movements, I find it surprising that this Accommodation is placed in the casual category.

The meals were just the right portion size and selection for older guests.
I really enjoyed the meals. As for the baths, the circulation system in the large public bath is good, but if there were a bit more hot water—enough to overflow when you get in—it would be even more pleasant.

Because our previous stay was excellent,
I stayed here alone in February, and it was so wonderful that I returned with a companion less than two months later. I had told my companion about my previous stay, so they arrived with the highest expectations, but they said it exceeded them. The meals had been completely updated to a spring menu and were excellent, though I felt the sashimi was the same as last time and could use a bit more variety. Last time I dined in the large hall since I was alone, but this time we were given a private room—thank you very much. We also made good use of the free private bath and the one-hour late check-out. We would love to visit again.

Thank you very much.
The day before our stay, I fell and injured my knee and had difficulty walking, but you kindly upgraded us at short notice to a Room with elevator access. You also showed great attention to detail, including assistance with meals and guidance to the taxi for the private bath. Thanks to your support, I hardly noticed the pain and was able to enjoy a wonderful stay. The meals were elegantly flavored, the Room was clean, and I couldn’t find anything lacking. Next time, I would love to visit again with my children. Thank you very much.

This is a truly wonderful Ryokan.
The building is old, but that only added to its charm. Above all, the meals and the staff’s hospitality were outstanding. When you think of food at an Onsen Ryokan, it’s easy to assume it will be standard Japanese fare, but the ingredients were excellent and every dish was delicious—you could really feel the chef’s pride. The staff were also wonderfully welcoming, making it a comfortable space where I could truly relax. Thank you very much.

A relaxing, comfortable stay at a calm, long-established property
We stayed as a couple at Chosenkaku Kameya near Lake Suwa. On arrival, we were welcomed with a fruit platter as an IKYU Diamond Member benefit. We also arrived slightly before check-in, yet they kindly showed us to our Room without hesitation, which we truly appreciated. The property has the calm presence of a long-established Accommodation, and we felt at ease from the moment we arrived. Both dinner and breakfast were served in private dining rooms, allowing us to relax in a spacious, quiet setting. Every dish made great use of local ingredients and seasonal flavors, and the overall quality was excellent. Our Room was clean and comfortable, making it easy to unwind. We also enjoyed the Onsen within the property and appreciated being able to bathe whenever we liked for a leisurely experience. The proprietress and all staff were very kind, and their warm hospitality stood out. We also appreciated their respectful approach—attentive without being intrusive—and are grateful for their thoughtful care. One minor issue was a clicking sound that seemed to come from around the lighting; we turned off the lights in the Room to address it. If this could be improved, it would make the stay even more comfortable. As for the view, our Room overlooked Lake Suwa. Although it is somewhat distant, we enjoyed the peaceful scenery. The location is also convenient for visiting nearby Suwa Taisha Shrine, which is another plus. Overall, it was a highly satisfying stay where we could enjoy delicious meals and an Onsen in a serene atmosphere.

A Memorable Accommodation
An Accommodation with the profound charm of a long-established Ryokan. Located next to Suwa Taisha Akimiya Shrine, it was a pleasure to visit early in the morning. The historic building was kept impeccably clean throughout, and the service struck a comfortable balance—attentive without being intrusive. The Asuka Room offered a calm yet elegant atmosphere thanks to dimmable lighting and indirect illumination, and both the in-room bath and the private bath had perfectly balanced water temperature that soothed body and mind. Meals at both breakfast and dinner featured gentle, seasonal flavors that paired well with local sake. It was also memorable to be able to touch on a part of Princess Kazunomiya’s history, making this an Accommodation I would like to return to.

A gourmet Ryokan for adults who cherish tranquility
I stayed during the autumn foliage season. Since I prefer a calm atmosphere and wanted to avoid noisy environments, I chose this accommodation hoping there would be no families with children or large groups of foreign tourists. It turned out to be the perfect choice! Both dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented and delicious (even though I had a multiple night stay, the menu did not repeat). There were no families with children, and while there were some foreign guests, they seemed to have an interest in Japanese culture and maintained a quiet demeanor, so there were no issues at all. The staff's hospitality was warm, allowing me to relax comfortably throughout my stay. According to my wife, the only concern was that the women's large bath changing area had only two sinks and two hair dryers, which could make it slightly inconvenient during busy times as she felt conscious of other guests waiting. I liked it so much that I’d love to visit again in another season!

The staff provided pleasant service, making the stay enjoyable. The room was spacious, and the air conditioning (heating) operated quietly, which was great. It is a cozy accommodation but offered a relaxing and comfortable stay.

A renowned Ryokan with historical ties to the former Honjin.
We had the pleasure of staying at this historic Ryokan during our mother-daughter trip visiting the Suwa Four Shrines. The upper room, where Princess Kazunomiya stayed on her journey to marry Shogun Iemochi during the late Edo period, has been transformed into a salon where guests can enjoy coffee or tea while admiring the beautiful garden. It was truly an honor to stay at such a prestigious and traditional Ryokan befitting its history as an official lodging site. As an IKYU Diamond Member benefit, we were welcomed with luxurious fresh fruits before soaking in the hot Onsen with natural spring water while enjoying views of Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya's grand trees and treasure hall roof below—a blissful moment indeed. Although the public bath and open-air bath are compact, they are impeccably clean with large glass windows letting in bright sunlight, creating a pleasant bathing experience. Guests can use these baths anytime from check-in until 9 AM the next morning; we enjoyed them four times during our stay! The amenities provided were high-quality products from Orbs in Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture—especially their hair mist blended with six essential oils that left my previously dry hair incredibly shiny. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the exquisite meals. Each dish showcased fresh and flavorful ingredients prepared with great care and sophistication, making every bite memorable. For dinner, appetizers like shirako tofu, simmered fugu aspic jelly, grilled oysters "Akebono" style, sea bream sushi paired with arrowhead chips (kuchinashi), and marinated wakasagi fish set high expectations for what followed—and they did not disappoint! The fugu aspic jelly was particularly outstanding; it was my first time tasting something so deliciously unique. We also tried Shinano Yukimasu sashimi for the first time—it was so fresh and high-quality that even those who usually dislike river fish found it delightful! The soba sushi served as a closing dish became an instant favorite—we wished we could take some home as souvenirs! Winter solstice rice cooked with pumpkin and adzuki beans was so delicious that both my mother and I had seconds. From start to finish—including dessert—the attention to detail reflected their pride as a historic Ryokan without resting on past laurels. Additional thoughtful touches included complimentary ice pops after bathing and breakfast featuring homemade tofu alongside perfectly seasoned dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet). We were deeply impressed by their head chef's skills honed at top hotels/restaurants in Kansai. Next time we hope to visit again as a couple or bring along our grown children for another wonderful experience here. Lastly but importantly—thank you for your kind gesture of providing lovely souvenirs upon checkout!

Thank you for your patronage.
A quiet accommodation as mentioned in the reviews. The hostess communicated in English with guests from abroad. It is a wonderful historical accommodation for international visitors to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. The room, renovated a few years ago, was very clean. However, the semi-open-air onsen bath in the room had a strong disinfectant smell rather than an onsen aroma and the water temperature was low, which was disappointing as noted in other reviews. Additionally, the parking lot is narrow, so those arriving by car should be cautious. We were fortunate to use 1.5 spaces since no other cars were present at that time. Meals were served privately both morning and evening. The view of the rain-soaked crape myrtle tree from our private dining room window created an enchanting atmosphere as described in reviews. The beautifully presented and delicious dishes were so captivating that we forgot to take photos before eating them! Tasting these meals made me appreciate being Japanese even more. Suwa has many sake breweries, making it enjoyable for sake lovers too! We indulged in seasonal limited-edition Masumi sake which was incredibly delicious and left us completely satisfied. Breakfast was also delightful, and we appreciated the warm send-off upon departure—thank you very much!

Satisfied.
A cozy accommodation with a limited number of rooms and a small bath, but the quiet atmosphere was very pleasant. The staff's welcoming attitude, accompanied by natural smiles, made for an enjoyable stay, making it an accommodation I would like to visit again. Both dinner and breakfast were creatively prepared and delicious.

It was excellent! I will stay here again!
I stayed for 2 nights and 3 days in Suwa to enjoy the autumn leaves. 【Positive Points】 - They were very accommodating to my 1-year-old son. This is an accommodation where families with children can stay with peace of mind. - All the staff had excellent hospitality, making our stay very pleasant. - The room had a private open-air bath with a neutral water quality that I think would appeal to everyone. - Excellent location, just a 10-second walk to Suwa Taisha Shimosha Shrine. 【Negative Points】 - It seemed that there are not many guests booking through IKYU.com regularly, as they were not familiar with the Diamond Member benefits.

Highly recommended for a return visit!
A traditional Ryokan with a refined simplicity and an overall sense of high quality. The highlights were the hospitality and cuisine. The service was neither overly formal nor distant, but rather warm and approachable, making us feel at ease. This is likely due to the exceptional skills of each staff member, which are clearly well-trained. As for the cuisine, it avoided unnecessary complexity or experimental dishes, instead focusing on carefully prepared meals that brought out the best in each ingredient with rich flavors. It was authentic Ryokan dining without any gimmicks. We have found a place we would love to revisit after a long time—it's easy to see why past literary greats favored this accommodation.

A Nostalgic Traditional Ryokan
An accommodation rooted in the Honjin of Shimosuwa. The former upper room facing the garden is now open as a lounge, where you can relax with a cup of coffee while enjoying the view of a small garden with a pond said to be designed by Kobori Enshu. Stay in the "Fuji Room," associated with Shimazaki Toson. This room, located directly above the upper room, offers a view of the garden. The maple trees in the garden reach the eaves, and it feels as though you could touch them from the window. Although it was a bit early during this stay, the room is likely to be surrounded by stunning red autumn leaves in season. The Onsen water quality is excellent, soft, and warms the body to the core, providing a pleasant experience. The bath was so enjoyable that I bathed three times during my one-night stay, leaving me feeling completely relaxed. The meals, while appearing to be standard kaiseki cuisine, included thoughtful touches such as matsutake mushroom dobin-mushi, reflecting seasonal ingredients and exceeding expectations. Overall, the cost performance is outstanding. The staff are friendly, creating a relaxed and nostalgic atmosphere where you can unwind and enjoy your stay at this charming Onsen accommodation.

We visited with children and were deeply impressed by the attentive service. Small details, such as the well-stocked amenities in the large public bath and complimentary coffee available in the lobby in the morning, added to our satisfaction. Perhaps due to the limited number of guest rooms, we were able to enjoy a relaxing bath without any crowding. The breakfast and overall experience allowed us to spend our time at ease. If we visit Suwa again, we would definitely love to stay here once more.

It was a truly wonderful accommodation.
Located at the perfect spot where Nakasendo and Koshu Kaido intersect, and right next to Akimiya of Suwa Taisha, this was a historic Ryokan. The bath was quiet and allowed for a relaxing soak. Above all, the meals were absolutely delicious. Beautifully presented with delicate flavors, we were thoroughly impressed by the young chef's excellent sense of taste. The local sake was also delightful, and we enjoyed comparing different varieties. Thank you very much!

Accommodation That Brings Happiness
This is a favorite accommodation that offers a high-quality experience filled with charm: attentive hospitality, relaxing atmosphere, quiet and delicious meals, and the warm smiles of the staff that bring comfort. Located near Suwa Taisha Akimiya Shrine, it exudes a refreshing energy. My grown children who now have their own families also love this accommodation, so I plan to stay here with everyone next time. Thank you for celebrating my birthday. This is the perfect place to spend special occasions with family, and I look forward to celebrating together again in the future. I heard that the kind former manager has retired; I wish them all the best in their future endeavors while looking forward to Kameya's continued success. Thank you for your hospitality. (The onsen has excellent water quality that helps relieve fatigue and physical discomforts such as pain. The size is slightly small, so I rated it 4 stars; however, there are absolutely no complaints.)

Accommodation with Delicious Cuisine
As it is a historic and old accommodation, the floor near the window was slightly slanted. The garden view is naturally better from the upper-level room than from above. It seems that there is no air conditioning in the shared area on the second floor of the main building, as I felt heat starting from halfway up the stairs from the lobby. Even with some minor dissatisfaction, all concerns disappeared after dinner. I had read reviews about how delicious the meals were, and they were absolutely true. During this trip, I stayed at two other accommodations; one of them featured meals produced by an award-winning individual, but this place surpassed that experience. It’s an accommodation worth revisiting just for its food.
