I expected too much.
We stayed here for the first night of our trip as a couple. The location was excellent, and the bath (Onsen) we had been looking forward to had wonderful water quality, making it very relaxing. On the other hand, there were several disappointing points regarding service and Room management. This was our mistake, but when we asked at check-in whether we could Change the Reservation due to an error in the meal Plan selected at the time of Reservation, our request was declined with little flexibility. As for the Room, while we understand the age of the building as part of its history, we noticed a musty odor as soon as we entered, which made it difficult to fully relax. It was also a negative that insects appeared in the Room. At dinner service, our attendant was a trainee; however, they could not correctly read some menu item names listed on the menu sheet, and when we asked questions about dishes, their answers were vague and uncertain. As a result, what should have been an enjoyable meal became somewhat disappointing. Even during training, we would have appreciated staff having at least basic knowledge before serving guests. Because both the bath (Onsen) and location were so good, we hope to see improvements in Room hygiene management, staff training, and more flexible customer service.

Ogawaya Accommodation Reviews
We were very satisfied with the bath facilities. The trainee who served our meals was also very polite and attentive. Unfortunately, the front desk staff’s service was not very good. As they represent the Hotel, we would have appreciated a friendlier, more welcoming approach rather than strictly following a manual.

Bath time is fun.
This was my first stay at Gero Onsen Ogawaya. Because of the extreme heat, I gave up exploring the town early and rested in the lobby, so I really appreciated being able to check in at 2:00 PM. The chandelier resembling the Milky Way was beautiful, and the complimentary welcome drink was delicious. Because of the maze-like layout created by multiple extensions, I had to change elevators several times to reach the large public bath. Around 4:00 PM there were only a few guests, and with its tatami flooring, spacious baths and washing area, it was very relaxing. The open-air bath downstairs also felt refreshing with a natural breeze. The high-concentration carbonated bath was unusual and left me feeling warmed through to my core. The next morning I used a different large public bath and fully enjoyed the Onsen experience. I made an online Reservation for a twin Western-style room in the annex “Yuragi,” overlooking the Hida River, on a no-meals Plan; with a convenience store nearby, there were no inconveniences. Sitting on a chair on the balcony while looking at the starry sky, I enjoyed hearing festival practice and traditional music from by the river.

Anniversary Celebration
We made a Reservation for our anniversary at [TOHERICO], a Room with an Onsen. The Room was surprisingly spacious, Western-style, and very clean. Although it is not on the riverside and there is no view from the Room, you can enjoy the scenery from the lobby, so it was not an issue. Both the in-room Onsen and the large public bath were excellent, and we would like to stay again for our next anniversary.

Dinner time
We visited looking forward to the Onsen and the meals, and overall we had a comfortable stay. In particular, the staff member in charge of dinner (an international employee) was very polite and pleasant, and we enjoyed our meal. However, there was one thing that concerned us regarding the condiments for the shabu-shabu at dinner. Because only a small amount of green onions was provided, I asked if I could have just a little more green onion as a condiment for the shabu-shabu. I was told that after checking with the kitchen, it would be provided only as a condiment set (wasabi, black pepper, and green onions) and that it would cost 500 yen. After that, I asked again with what seemed to be the person in charge—a Japanese male staff member—but he said the kitchen would not provide additional green onions unless payment was made. He also mentioned that 300 yen would be fine instead, but I could not clearly understand the pricing or how it was supposed to be provided. For me, just a small amount of extra green onion would have been enough; however, since it had to be provided as a set—and because wasabi and black pepper are also condiments for stone-grilled meat—I honestly did not understand why this response was necessary. I wondered if there had been confusion with the sliced green onions included in the vegetable platter for shabu-shabu, so I confirmed again; however, they said it referred to just a small pinch of condiment green onion. Also, I am not sure whether an extra charge would have applied if I had requested “a bit more” from the beginning or whether it would have been handled in exactly the same way—so as a guest, I felt confused. This is not about whether 500 yen or 300 yen is expensive or cheap; rather, I could not understand the standard or reasoning behind this policy until the end. In conclusion, I decided not to request any additional condiments and said “No thank you.” Since everything else about our stay was very good, this point alone felt disappointing. I hope this feedback will be helpful for improving your service in the future. Thank you very much.

It exceeded my expectations.
I had assumed that a large, long-established Hotel would be optimized for the masses and not feel special, so this time we visited for the first time as a trial in an affordable Room. The hospitality of the staff was outstanding and truly memorable. The facilities were well maintained throughout, which made us feel at ease. The food was delicately seasoned, and the jellies in particular were excellent—bringing out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The tableware also felt special without being overdone, not like cheap mass-produced items. Our preconceptions were pleasantly proven wrong, and my spouse and I were very satisfied. Thank you very much. Since the in-room bath was smaller than expected, we have already made a Reservation for SARAI and DAIDAI this autumn, and we look forward to staying with you again.

We had a relaxing and comfortable stay.
I arrived at the Accommodation a little early, so I completed the check-in procedures and took a walk around the area to pass the time. At 3:00 p.m., I received the Room key and went in. It was a renovated bedroom. The Room has a unit toilet + shower booth, but the toilet space was far too cramped. If anything, it would have been fine without the shower booth. The tatami-style bath in the large public bath was relaxing, perhaps because it was early on a Friday. To get from the large public bath to the open-air bath, you need to go down some stairs, but with pleasant weather and a great view, it felt wonderful. The private bath (Suzuriya) felt more concentrated than the large public bath. Towels and bath towels were provided—perhaps because we were staying guests (it wasn’t mentioned on their website). It said the capacity was 4 people, so I wondered how spacious it would be, but two people seems about right!? Considering two people, it was plenty spacious, and we fully enjoyed the Gero Onsen water. Breakfast was served buffet-style. Depending on the time slot it can get a bit crowded and there may be some waiting time, but there are plenty of seats and we were guided to our table quickly. After eating, I ended up taking a nap once my hunger was satisfied and missed my chance for an Onsen before departure (morning hours are 5:00–10:00), which I regretted—but overall it was a very satisfying stay. Thank you very much. I truly hope that Gero Onsen will become revitalized as an entire town.

I love it.
I stayed at Ogawaya for two nights, and dinner was excellent on both days. The second night in particular made me very happy with its full Hida beef course. Breakfast also offers a wide variety of dishes and is delicious. There are many staff members from Southeast Asia, and most of them provide warm hospitality with sincere effort and a smile. The Room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. The welcome sweet, blueberry daifuku, was also delicious! It would be even better if the skincare amenities were a bit higher quality. Thank you very much.

Hmm… the food was…
As expected of one of Japan’s three most famous Onsen, the water quality was excellent. The Room was also very clean, and I was very satisfied. The mattress was good as well, so it was easy to sleep. I chatted briefly with the front desk staff, and they said the Hotel is always fully booked even on weekdays; during check-in hours, the lobby gets so crowded that there’s hardly anywhere to sit. The Room is great! The staff are hospitable—also great! The Onsen water is great! All that’s left is the meals. One of the joys of an Onsen trip is the combination of hot springs and food! Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed. To put it bluntly, since this is one of Japan’s three most famous Onsen and you have so many guests, I wondered if you might be resting on your laurels. It was a shame. Having stayed at various Hotels and seen how much creativity goes into their meals, I couldn’t help thinking that with this cuisine… It felt like a missed opportunity. That said, it wasn’t bad at all—please don’t misunderstand. This is purely my personal impression. Because the hot spring water was so good, I would like to visit again. I also heard that the bath in the Room uses free-flowing Onsen water, which I found extremely satisfying! If you could put a bit more effort into the meals, I think this would become a truly wonderful Hotel with nothing to criticize. I sincerely hope you’ll keep striving for improvement.

Onsen
I made a Reservation to enjoy an Onsen nearby. I requested the Hida beef feast menu, and I was able to enjoy a relaxing meal in a private room with delicious dishes, which was wonderful. The Room was also upgraded to a spacious and lovely one that felt too large for just two people. I would love to visit again.

Family Trip
The hotel is very spacious, featuring three types of public Onsen baths and private Onsen options. Both dinner and breakfast are delicious, and the staff at the front desk and restaurant are friendly, providing detailed explanations about the hotel's facilities and cuisine.

We first explored the neighborhood and then checked in. Right upon entering, there was a waterfall flowing, creating a great atmosphere. What impressed us the most was the food. Every dish was delicious with no unpleasant flavors. The bath in the Room felt better than expected, though some towels in the bathing area were torn and frayed like rags. Overall, we had a relaxing and very pleasant stay. Thank you!

This was my second stay. I was delighted to receive a birthday gift. Check-in went smoothly, and the foreign staff were working hard. However, check-out was disappointing. It was raining when I brought the car to the entrance to load my luggage, but there were no staff around, and no one said "Please visit us again," which felt a bit lonely. The hot spring water was excellent. Navigating the elevators to get to the bath could be a little confusing.

It was a great trip, but...
Due to dietary restrictions, we informed the staff during the reservation, and they responded with great care. Thanks to their attentiveness, we were able to enjoy our mealtime. The open-air bath in the room was excellent, allowing us to relax and unwind. The only downside was that adjusting the shower temperature in the room was difficult (it had an old-fashioned faucet for hot and cold water), making it suddenly too hot or too cold and hard to use. Additionally, the showerhead was too small, which made it take more than twice as long as usual. Without these issues, it would have been perfect! Overall, it was truly wonderful, and I would love to stay again!

Accommodation in Gero Onsen Town
A long-awaited visit to Gero Onsen, and I loved the room on the riverside. The front desk and facility guidance were very kind. However, dinner was an "original kaiseki" where each guest could choose their dishes, but choices and upgrades were not available, which was disappointing. At the breakfast buffet venue, I wished there were more options for Western-style dishes. The Onsen with tatami flooring felt very pleasant.

It was excellent! I want to stay here again!
Conveniently located very close to the Gero Onsen town for easy exploration! The onsen offers a variety of options and the large public bath is very clean, providing great satisfaction! My mother, who has difficulty walking long distances due to her leg condition, found it slightly challenging as the accommodation layout is a bit complex. Reaching the baths or dining area required some elevator transfers and walking. The meals were delicious and highly satisfying! For those without mobility issues, it should be no problem at all!

The accommodation has a 70-year history, so the overall age of the building is noticeable, but it has been renovated. Stayed in the Kasuga room, renewed in 2019, with four people. The room was spacious enough. The private bath in the room was also an onsen. Cleanliness was average, but the air conditioner in the bedroom had a strong moldy smell and could not be used. There are two large baths: a tatami bath and a spa, with alternating use for men and women. However, accessing them requires changing elevators, which felt inconvenient and far away. The hallway to the spa also had a moldy smell but appeared clean without noticeable contamination and could be used without crowding issues. Dinner featured a Hida beef course where various dishes using Hida beef were served from start to finish. Breakfast was buffet-style with no standout regional specialties or notable dishes offered. There were no unpleasant experiences regarding customer service; however, it’s unfortunate that occasional moldy smells throughout detracted from an otherwise pleasant stay.

Great value for money.
This was my second stay at Ogawaya. The staff were mostly foreigners, but since my main purpose was enjoying the onsen, I had no complaints about that. It was disappointing that the vending machine didn’t have canned chu-hi. The noise from the hallway during the night was quite noticeable. The breakfast buffet was easier to enjoy compared to those at city hotels. I made good use of my vacation time by soaking in the onsen and taking a free taxi to the station at 8 AM the next morning. I plan to visit other accommodations in Gero in the future, but I will also return to Ogawaya again!

Babies are welcome.
We chose this Ryokan for our first trip with our newborn daughter, as it was highly recommended on various websites and social media. The "Welcome Baby Plan" was wonderful, providing a diaper disposal bin, Milton sterilizer, baby bath and chair, as well as yukata and towels for the baby. We stayed in the Kasuga Room, which was truly excellent. The meals were delicious too. However, since in-room dining seemed unavailable, we were provided with a private dining room instead. Unfortunately, when my daughter became fussy and needed a diaper change, I returned to our room but couldn't settle her down enough to go back to the dining area. Without my phone at hand to contact anyone directly from the room, I called the front desk for assistance. The response from the front desk staff felt vague and unhelpful; they simply told my husband (who remained in the dining area) to finish his meal before returning to me. My husband then asked if it would be possible for us to have the remaining food brought up to our room so that I could eat there instead—but he was curtly told that it wasn’t allowed. This left us feeling disappointed. It would have been nice if some flexibility could be offered under such circumstances—especially when traveling with an infant—as switching places between parents might not always work smoothly. Additionally: while sake was served as an aperitif before dinner (as is customary), other Ryokans we've visited often offered alternatives like juice upon request—for guests who don’t drink alcohol—which wasn’t available here; this came across as surprising given their promotion of being "baby-friendly." It would enhance guest satisfaction greatly if such adjustments were considered moving forward. Lastly: many staff members appeared foreign nationals whose service skills didn’t leave much impression overall—their explanations about facilities felt overly scripted/manual-based rather than genuinely helpful or clear compared against exceptional hospitality experienced elsewhere previously within similar establishments' settings!

Japan's Three Famous Hot Springs
It was nearby, but I hadn't had the chance to visit, so this time I decided to indulge a little. The main purpose was the Onsen. The water quality was excellent, and I used almost all the baths, which left me very satisfied. I didn't have high expectations for the meals, but they were very satisfying. If possible, it would have been nice to be served tea upon arrival instead of self-service.

Highly Satisfied
Decided to visit Gero Onsen on the same day and found Ogawaya, hoping for an accommodation with great baths. Since it was a same-day reservation, dinner was not included, and only smoking rooms were available. I wrote a note saying, "If there’s a cancellation for a non-smoking room, I’m willing to pay extra to change," and received a call shortly after saying, "A cancellation just came in; you can switch with an additional payment." I felt very lucky! Check-in and facility guidance upon arrival were smooth and easy to understand. There were many foreign staff members as well, but everyone was kind and attentive, so there were no inconveniences at all. The room was clean and comfortable to stay in. The location was excellent; we had no trouble finding places for dinner nearby. However, the breakfast buffet was quite ordinary. The baths were amazing—I tried all of them but especially loved the spa! The mist sauna had just the right temperature for me—not too hot—and it was perfect! It was an incredibly satisfying accommodation experience—thank you very much!

A Traditional Accommodation in Gero Onsen
On a weekday with perfect weather on my day off, I moved to Gero in the evening after exploring Takayama. I used IKYU.com to book a stay at Ogawaya with breakfast included, in a Japanese-style room for just under 20,000 yen (Hot Spring Tax is payable separately at checkout). There were many foreign hotel staff members, but they all spoke excellent Japanese and provided service with smiles. I was delighted to receive an upgrade for my room. A welcome drink was available as self-service; the orange juice and coffee were delicious. The onsen was fantastic, leaving my skin smooth and soft—I enjoyed it five times! It was nice that the men's and women's baths switched in the morning. Amenities such as razors, hairbands, and skincare creams were well-stocked. As an established accommodation with remnants of the Showa era here and there, it brought back fond memories for us as a couple from that generation. Breakfast was buffet-style featuring local ingredients like Hoba Miso, Keichan chicken stir-fry, Hida beef curry, among others—offering both Japanese and Western options that left us satisfied. We hope to return next time with our grandparents! The layout of the facility is like an ant's nest with branching paths; you may need to transfer elevators when heading to different facilities or onsens—try not to get lost (laughs).

Stayed during Golden Week. Many of the staff appeared to be of foreign nationality, but all were well-trained. Although there were some minor mistakes in Japanese, the service was so wonderful that it didn’t bother us at all. The food was delicious, and we had a very comfortable stay. Thank you so much! We would love to stay again.

Accommodation for a Relaxing Stay
A very comfortable accommodation. The staff are kind, and when I got confused about parking, they kindly guided me to a hidden parking spot. The scenery is beautiful, offering a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The onsen may not have various health benefits, but it is effective in relieving fatigue and providing relaxation. The view from the onsen is also great, making it highly recommended. However, I must admit that the firmness of the futon and pillow was not to my liking. The futon felt as hard as a mat, and the pillow was also firm, causing me to wake up during the night. Next time I stay here, I'll try choosing a bed-type option instead.
