    After descending from the mountains on the second night of my two-night stay in Shima Onsen—somewhere I had long wanted to visit—I stayed at this Accommodation. It is located in a quiet area, and the beautiful views of the Shima River from both the Room and the baths, along with the excellent spring quality and comfortable temperatures, made me very satisfied. The three large public baths were each enjoyable. The proprietress’s picture-story show and talk, which she has continued for 33 years, were skillful, fun, soothing, and highly recommended. The staff were also polite and very pleasant, providing attentive hospitality throughout. This is one Accommodation I would like to stay at again.

    Fully satisfied with the special room featuring a semi-open-air bath

    We’ve stayed here repeatedly with my elderly parents, who have limited vision and unsteady footing. Especially in colder seasons, a semi-open-air bath that can be used safely is essential for us from the standpoint of preventing heat shock. This Room has only a few steps, so my parents can move around with peace of mind, and we can enjoy the free-flowing hot spring water at our own pace. After warming up thoroughly, we can open the large bathroom window wide and enjoy an open-air bath atmosphere—it truly feels like paradise. In late April, during the season of fresh greenery, my parents were thrilled by the bright green view filling the large window. A fluffy bathrobe is provided in the Room, which is very convenient after bathing. Both breakfast and dinner are served in a semi-private dining area where our family can relax on our own, so it’s also a great plus that even a parent who has difficulty chewing can eat comfortably at their own pace. We also really appreciate how cheerful and considerate all of the staff are. This is a wonderful Accommodation where we’d love to continue staying to fully enjoy Shima Onsen, which my parents love.

    The bathroom was very clean and pleasant.

    It was a wonderful Accommodation. We were told that the bathwater is drained every day and the bath is thoroughly cleaned, so it felt very clean. We would love to stay again.

    A Room with a semi-open-air bath for consistently satisfying stays

    I visited again with my elderly parents. When staying at various Accommodations, we choose a Room with a free-flowing hot spring bath so that my parents, who are unsteady on their feet and feel uneasy about large public baths, can bathe safely and comfortably. At Yamaguchikan, if you stay in the Special Room with a bath, you can enjoy delicious meals in a private dining room at a relaxed pace. What I especially love is the excellent value for money—this price for an in-room free-flowing hot spring bath with such wonderful water quality! The view from the large window of our riverside Room this time was also outstanding, and it looks like it would be enjoyable in every season, so my parents say they want to stay at Yamaguchikan again. Another highlight is that all the staff greet you with warm smiles and kind service, making every stay truly pleasant.

    Great value for money and a highly satisfying accommodation!

    I stayed for 2 nights with my elderly parents in a special Room with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath featuring free-flowing Onsen water direct from the source. I visit Shima Onsen almost every month, but this was my first time at Yamaguchikan. The result: I was extremely satisfied!! Being able to enjoy free-flowing Onsen water in the guest Room was wonderful, and since we really need an elevator, it was very helpful. Even when it’s cold, you can still take a walk around the spacious building. I was also happy to find complimentary canned juice in the Room refrigerator! Dinner and breakfast at the dining area were excellent. Even during a Multiple Night Stay, the meals didn’t get repetitive, and the gentle, carefully seasoned flavors were delicious. This cuisine, this Room, and this Onsen—at this price!! It’s amazing. Above all, the staff near the front desk (with many international guests around) and everyone at the dining area on the 3rd floor were truly cheerful and kind, so we could relax and feel at ease throughout our stay. Thank you very much. I’m giving one less star because the building is old and there were a few spots that caught my attention, but overall I was extremely satisfied. I’m glad I found another favorite Accommodation. I’d love to stay again.

    The autumn leaves and open-air bath were fantastic.

    I stayed with a friend, and the staff were all very kind and friendly. They even took a photo of us together without us asking, which made us very happy. The bath temperature was slightly lukewarm, so we could relax and chat for a long time while refreshing our bodies. Since it was the autumn foliage season, enjoying the scenery while soaking in the onsen was amazing. The food was delicious, and both the room and the facility were impeccably clean, making our stay very pleasant. This has become one of the accommodations I definitely want to visit again. Thank you to everyone at the accommodation for creating such wonderful memories!

    The Onsen was excellent.

    An old Ryokan along the valley, full of charm and impeccably clean. The large open-air bath by the valley was amazing, giving a sense of becoming one with nature. The Room had its own private indoor and open-air baths with natural hot spring water, allowing us to enjoy them multiple times until check-out. The quality of the spring water was excellent. The Ryokan's hostess is famous for her kamishibai (paper theater), and during meal times, guests would leave their seats to watch it when it started. On the lobby floor and second floor, lanterns were hanging, creating a cozy atmosphere with izakayas and ramen shops available as well. Due to its high altitude, it wasn’t too hot even in midsummer. I’d love to visit again if I have another chance!

    I had a relaxing time.

    We stayed with my elderly mother as a group of three. We used a wheelchair to move around the accommodation. Some large baths have a few steps, but we managed to walk and enter. The male staff near the large bath was very kind and provided various guidance. The paper theater by the hostess was excellent, and my mother was very pleased. This time, we booked a massage for my mother, and she said it was very relaxing. This was our second stay following spring, and we had another wonderful time. We would love to visit again.

    The number of staff is insufficient for the number of guests.

    This was my first time staying here. The Onsen was as good as the reviews mentioned, but I couldn't quite figure out what the main dish for dinner was. At breakfast, even after being seated, rice took a long time to be served, so I ended up eating the side dishes while waiting. Other guests who arrived later also seemed confused about what to do since their rice wasn't served either. It felt like there were not enough staff members to attend to the guests.

    An Accommodation Supported by On-Site Staff

    Access to the ART event venue is convenient. The warm welcome from the bell staff upon arrival and the efforts of the foreign staff at the dining hall were impressive. While the building shows its age, it is compensated by the open-air bath along the mountain stream.

    Available during the Obon holiday.

    The facility was very clean, charming, and lovely. We were worried about our child being noisy during meals, but we were kindly provided with a private room, allowing us to enjoy our meal comfortably. Unfortunately, we arrived late and missed the 7:00 PM storytelling session. The Onsen experience was wonderful as we got to enjoy both baths through the rotation system.

    Smooth and silky skin

    This was my first visit. Thank you for your hospitality. The facility was quiet, the scenery and Onsen were wonderful, and I felt deeply relaxed. I noticed two things: the futon mattress was hard, and the seasoning of the dishes was a bit strong, which was unfortunate. The menu itself was great, so I hope the natural flavors of the ingredients can be highlighted more in the future. I would love to visit again.

    The Room and the bath were very satisfying.

    Due to a sudden family memorial service, I searched for accommodation near my mother's hometown in Shima Onsen and decided on Yamaguchi-kan based on reviews. We stayed as a group of three women and one man, and the room was spacious enough for four people to relax comfortably. The outdoor onsen along the Shima River was excellent, and although the facility is slightly old, we were very satisfied overall. Next time, I would like to bring my grandchildren and stay again.     Girls' Night Out with My Daughter

    Invited by my daughter to try SUP at Shima Lake, I chose Yamaguchikan for its Onsen with open-air baths. I enjoyed two types of open-air baths and three types of large baths. It was perfect listening to the sound of the river flow. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent in both quantity and flavor.

    I had always wanted ...

    I had always wanted to stay at Shima Onsen, so I found this accommodation. The Shima Onsen area itself has a somewhat nostalgic and tranquil atmosphere. You can enjoy the onsen while gazing at the river, and since it wasn’t too crowded, it was very relaxing. The meals and amenities are standard.

    Onsen is the best!

    I stayed in a room with a semi-open-air bath. It was a rare family trip, and since my 90-year-old mother joined us, having a bath in the room was very convenient. The accommodation was clean, the water temperature was just right, and I could soak for as long as I wanted. My skin felt smooth and refreshed afterward. I also visited the open-air bath and large public bath; both had excellent water quality, and bathing while listening to the sound of the river was truly wonderful. What concerned me about the room was that there was no hand soap provided, which made me question its hygiene standards. Additionally, splinters from the tatami mats stuck to my clothes, which caused some inconvenience. It was also disappointing that BS channels on TV were not available. I hope to stay again during autumn when the leaves change color.

    The location was quite nice, with a flowing river visible from the open-air bath and fresh greenery on the mountain across the river. The meals had a variety of dishes, but unfortunately, they were not very tasty and left me disappointed. Overall, I had higher expectations, so it was a bit of a letdown.

    The Onsen was great.

    It was disappointing that the paper play we were looking forward to could not be seen due to the absence of the hostess. The Onsen with a slightly lukewarm temperature was great for enjoying a long, relaxing soak while gazing at the river. We were able to enjoy each of the baths. As for meals, perhaps it was just on that particular day? The hot pot and dessert at dinner were delicious, but... other menu items felt underwhelming. Unfortunately, breakfast's medicinal hot pot was very tasty—breakfast overall was much better than dinner. All staff members provided friendly and attentive service. We had a relaxing and pleasant stay throughout our visit.

    The Onsen water at S...

    The Onsen water at Shima Onsen is very soothing. This time, I enjoyed it exclusively in the Room's private Onsen. The hostess's storytelling with her lovely voice was delightful. It would have been perfect if there had been Shima Onsen's morning porridge as well.

    It became the best memory.

    During our 10-day trip to Japan, we stayed at Yamaguchi-kan for one night. Simply put, it was better than the highly popular hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto that we had booked months in advance. The baths were, of course, excellent, but what stood out the most was the incredibly humble and attentive staff. There is no other accommodation that treats its guests with such care. The meals were absolutely delicious (I always go for popular dishes) and healthy, which helped us recover from travel fatigue. Surrounded by nature, this ryokan offers a warm and nostalgic atmosphere that brings happiness to your stay. Thank you very much!

    Relax at the Onsen

    I have visited Shima Onsen many times, but this was my first stay at Yamaguchi-kan. Since I was traveling with my elderly mother, I had informed them in advance about needing a wheelchair for use within the accommodation. They kindly prepared it right at the entrance, which was very helpful. At other ryokans, wheelchairs are often provided after check-in, but here it was ready as soon as we took off our shoes, making movement much easier. I was impressed by how well the staff shared information among themselves. The parking attendant was also very pleasant and welcoming. The accommodation itself was impeccably clean, and even the windows were spotless, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful greenery outside and relax comfortably. Additionally, the paper theater performance by the proprietress (okami) was wonderful! My mother thoroughly enjoyed it, and I was moved by her beautiful voice and professional-level storytelling skills. The story itself was also incredibly entertaining. It’s easy to see why there are so many repeat guests here. I sincerely hope that the proprietress continues her paper theater performances in the future. We’ve already made another reservation because we can’t wait to visit again!

    Relaxing Accommodation

    First visit to Shima Onsen. The building is old but clean and comfortable, making it a pleasant accommodation. The meals were average with no particular highlights, though the drinks at the restaurant seemed a bit pricey. Since only water is provided in the room, it might be better to buy drinks at a convenience store beforehand. Please note that there are no convenience stores nearby (there was a liquor store next door). The onsen was absolutely amazing, especially the open-air bath located along the Shima River with an incredible view. Towels need to be brought from your room, so you’ll have to return them before heading out for meals or shopping, which can be slightly inconvenient. It’s a small onsen town with few shops around, so dining out might be difficult; however, there is an izakaya within the accommodation which makes "No Meals Included" stays manageable. While younger visitors may find it lacking in excitement, I personally think this is an excellent place for middle-aged and older guests to relax and relieve daily stress and fatigue. I look forward to visiting again soon—this time with my parents! Thank you very much for your hospitality during our stay!

    The hot spring was as wonderful as ever.

    This time, we stayed for the first time in two years, spending one night in a room with a private open-air bath. We have loved Yamaguchi-kan for over 20 years and have been visiting since our children were small. The hot spring water is simply amazing—smooth and clear. This time, I enjoyed it six times, including the large public bath. Dinner was delightful with small dishes of meat and fish, both in quality and quantity. As for breakfast, I mentioned this in the survey as well—the main bento felt a bit like a business hotel's buffet and was slightly underwhelming. For guests staying in Yamaguchi-kan's best rooms, expectations for meals are likely high. With such wonderful rooms and hot springs, I believe guests would be satisfied even if the accommodation fee were higher. Perhaps revising breakfast content alongside an increase in accommodation fees could be considered? As a loyal fan, I hope you will continue to provide wonderful experiences moving forward!

    The hot spring water...

    The hot spring water is exceptional—smooth, gentle, and so relaxing that you'll want to stay in forever. The hostess at Yamaguchi-kan is beautiful, charming, and wonderful—a true highlight of the accommodation. Her storytelling performance was entertaining and memorable. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again.

    I have stayed at Yamaguchi-kan several times because I love the Onsen. The Onsen was excellent this time as well. I always look forward to the hostess's picture-story show. This time, I went to the dinner venue early for the show, but it took a while for staff to respond even after pressing the call button. Despite finishing my meal quickly, soup and dessert were served later than those who arrived after me, causing me to miss part of the picture-story show, which was disappointing.

    The Onsen was great,...

    The Onsen was great, but there were some issues with the meals. It would have been better if there were more dishes for dinner. While options like tempura, grilled iwana fish with salt, and horse meat are available as add-ons, it made me wonder about that approach. During breakfast, the staff seemed understaffed, and service was slow in keeping up with the demand.
