Next time, we’ll stay at Hamanoyu again.

Thank you very much for taking care of us during our stay. This trip included some remote work, so this time I prioritized that over the view. Still, I was looking for a place with a large public bath and a spacious Room. It was exactly what I hoped for—and more: a corner Room with lush green trees right outside the window, even better than I imagined. In addition, the first-floor lobby of this long-established Ryokan, where koi swim in clear water, along with the medicinal bath and open-air bath—everything was simply wonderful. It felt like a dream Hotel, and we were able to spend a truly happy time. We were also blessed with great weather and could enjoy the nighttime fireworks just a short walk away, making our first visit to Suwa absolutely unforgettable. Thank you again.

The previous guest’s underwear had been left in the Room’s bathroom.

On the third night of our Shinshu trip, we stayed in a top-floor Room with an open-air bath. Before dinner, my wife used the bath and found what looked like clothing left behind in it. We asked the Ryokan staff to check, and they said it appeared to be men’s underwear, which they took away. I have traveled many times, but this was a first. I couldn’t help wondering: Was the bath not cleaned? Why would underwear be inside the bath when it should be left in the changing area? I felt increasingly uneasy and disgusted. I assumed the Ryokan would later provide an explanation and apology, but we heard nothing at all. I thought they might have hesitated to contact us around dinner time, but there was still no follow-up after breakfast the next morning. Finally, at checkout, a female staff member said from behind the front desk only, “We apologize for yesterday’s inconvenience.” That was it. An apology should be made in person with an explanation—why did no one come to speak with us? My frustration boiled over. Perhaps the Ryokan considered this a minor issue. But as guests who spent the night unable to relax—worried that the bath hadn’t been cleaned or that we had been made to bathe in water used to wash dirty underwear—I wish they had shown more understanding of how unsettling this was. The renovated Room was spacious and clean, and the location is excellent—close to the station with a direct view of Suwa Lake fireworks—so the facilities are good. However, I felt that what matters most at a Ryokan—the hospitality and willingness to use guest feedback (complaints and opinions) to improve service—was completely lacking. A magazine left in our Room featured Hamanoyu as a five-star Accommodation and even included photos of this Room, but it did not feel five-star at all. Management should understand that even if there are nine good points, one bad experience is enough for guests to leave silently—and never return.

    A mother-and-daughter trip

Because we would be checking in late after watching the Takigi Noh performance at Misogi Shrine, we stayed for one night with breakfast only (no dinner). The Facility felt a bit dated in some details, but it was clean and comfortable. The staff were pleasant and welcomed and saw us off with wonderful smiles. The Nishikigoi carp and turtles swimming in the indoor pond also helped soothe our travel fatigue. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

The lobby is spacious, so it seems easy to stay even with a large group or family. Even the Room for two was fairly spacious and comfortable to use. Dinner seems to vary by season; when I visited in spring, many items had a cherry blossom flavor.

Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. All staff members were kind and helpful. The only disappointment was that the Facility felt outdated overall.

The Room was very nice, but the meals were very disappointing.

The top-floor Room with a semi-open-air bath was very nice, but the quality of the meals was far below what the price would suggest. Dinner was unacceptable, with tempura and other items served cold. Even if it hadn’t been cold, the taste was mediocre. I could have tolerated breakfast being served in a large hall, but it was disappointing that the rice was mushy. It was also disappointing that there was no send-off at departure.

    The welcome was exceptional.

Room 301: The welcome at arrival was excellent. However, stating that the lobby welcome drink is “charged for non-guests” feels unnecessary. At other Hotels, it is usually offered to all visitors. The machine is complicated for elderly guests and can leave a worse impression. The Room is generally tidy, but dust has accumulated in the corners of the carpet, suggesting cleaning that does not reach every corner. The sliding doors for the coat rack and slipper storage do not move at all!!! I recommend either removing the doors entirely or installing a curtain or roller blind. Despite the convenient transportation access and good location, this will lead to a gradual decline. Manager and floor supervisors should create a checklist for Facility inspections. For any Facility currently unavailable, it would be better to clearly post a notice.

    A charming, traditional Ryokan-style Hotel

We stayed as a family on a breakfast-only Plan. Although the Accommodation seemed to have quite a lot of Rooms, it never felt overly crowded, including the large public bath, so we were able to relax and fully enjoy the Onsen. With both the main bath and the open-air bath, the total area is spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was exactly what you’d expect from a Ryokan breakfast, and we were very satisfied. The koi and turtles swimming in the lobby were wonderful. Keeping such a large building clean and well maintained must be challenging, but we would love to stay again.

The service was excellent. We chose Suwa Onsen for an Onsen trip to thank my grandmother. The view of Lake Suwa from the Room was wonderful. However, the meals were a bit disappointing.

It was comfortable. It would be perfect if the Wi-Fi were stronger.

Thank you very much. I stayed on the business floor as I was traveling for work. Everything was satisfactory, but the Wi-Fi connection was unstable, which made it difficult to work.

    The bath...

I have stayed here 3-4 times before, and this time I visited after a long while. - Facility: The lobby floor with koi swimming creates a wonderful atmosphere, but the entire facility felt quite cold. - Cuisine: It was luxurious. The private dining room "Ukishiro" had an excellent ambiance. - Room: I stayed with my wife's parents, and the room included a Japanese-style room, a bedroom, and a sitting area where everyone could gather comfortably. It was very convenient for us. - Onsen: The open-air bath is quite small considering the size of the ryokan (previously there was no open-air bath at Hama no Yu; it seems to have been added later). Since many people use this small open-air bath, when I went in after dinner (around 10 PM), there were numerous floating debris like trash or what seemed to be skin particles, which felt very unhygienic. The indoor bath has a nice atmosphere as well; however, during my previous visit, I remember that the spout of hot water was beautifully lit up with lights creating an amazing ambiance—this time it seemed like the light bulb had burned out or wasn’t functioning properly anymore, which was disappointing. Compared to my previous stays here, this experience left me feeling slightly disappointed. I hope for improvements in the future!

Stayed for 6 nights, the Onsen was excellent.

Stayed in the lowest-ranked room on the 4th floor with No Meals Included. Negative Points: - While it might be due to the Ryokan's policy, meals are not provided for solo travelers. - The room was dirty—not just old but dusty. Even placing a handheld gaming device resulted in its display being covered in dust. - The kettle was old and dirty; when I checked inside while filling water, it was heavily used, blackened, and had white powder floating from some peeling material. - The sandals were dirty. - The air conditioner was filthy; though I understand it's old, the amount of dust was overwhelming... - There was no humidifier available initially; although I could borrow one later, it was too small to provide any significant effect. Positive Points: - The Onsen is spacious and clean. Suggestions for Improvement: - Install air purifiers with proper humidifying functions to address both dustiness and dryness in the room. - Replace outdated kettles with new ones. - Since meals are not provided, many guests may rely on supermarkets or convenience stores—please consider providing a microwave either in rooms or somewhere accessible within the Facility. I stayed from 12/26 to 1/1 but caught a severe cold on 12/31 due to dust and dryness—my attempt at healing through Onsen failed this time. While I'd like to return next year because of how great the Onsen is, if issues like dusty rooms and outdated equipment aren't addressed, I'll have to look for another Hotel instead.

    First Visit to Kamisuwa Onsen

I stayed with my elderly mother. The Japanese-Western style room was spacious, and it was nice to sit at the kotatsu and enjoy the view of Lake Suwa. However, the TV was positioned at quite an angle from both the kotatsu and the bed, making it hard to watch. It was disappointing that Lake Suwa couldn't be seen at all from either the open-air bath or indoor bath. The staff's service and meals were excellent.

The view from the tenth-floor room is truly stunning, offering a magical sight of Lake Suwa in the morning. The staff are incredibly kind, and their thoughtful service allows you to check in while comfortably seated in your room, making you feel special from the moment you arrive. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptional, featuring dishes made with an abundance of seasonal local ingredients that left a lasting impression. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again and confidently recommend to loved ones or guests from out of town.

    The Onsen was wonderful!

We reserved three affordable single rooms without a view for our year-end party at an izakaya in Suwa. Although the rooms were listed as having no view, we could see a distant sunset, which was a pleasant surprise. It made us imagine how amazing the rooms with views must be. The beds in the rooms were large, and the desks were spacious and well-designed, making our stay comfortable. The bath facilities were excellent with perfect water temperature, herbal baths, medicinal baths, and even a mist sauna that we enjoyed multiple times. Next time, we would like to book rooms with meals included and with a view. Thank you very much!

The view and room were satisfying, while the Onsen and breakfast were average.

The view and the room were very satisfying. The spacious area allowed us to relax, and with good weather, we could enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Suwa. Dinner was served in a private room, allowing us to dine at our leisure. The Onsen felt small for the size of the accommodation. The open-air bath was also narrow, and the sauna was very dark due to one light bulb being out.

The staff provided excellent service at the accommodation.

I didn't have high expectations for this large accommodation, but it exceeded them. The customer service was excellent, and I felt very relaxed. The room was well-cleaned, and the view from the room as well as the koi swimming in the pond at the lobby were charming and wonderful. The meals were also delicious. Being close to the station makes me want to stay here again. The open-air bath was a bit small, but features like the herbal bath and mist sauna were thoughtfully designed, making it a great accommodation overall.

    A wonderful Room.

The Room is absolutely amazing! The interior is very clean, with great views, spaciousness, and a wonderful bath. If you're staying at Hama no Yu, this Room is highly recommended. Using coupons, we stayed for just over 30,000 yen per person, making it excellent value for money. It might be the best among accommodations in the same price range we've experienced so far! The private dining area and meals also evoke a sense of nostalgia. Some staff members were from overseas but were doing their best with great effort. If I have the chance to stay again, I would definitely choose this Room. Thank you very much!

    Had a great stay.

We stayed for one night as a family to visit Suwa Taisha Shrine. The spacious and well-maintained environment, delicious meals featuring seasonal and local ingredients, and the attentive hospitality allowed us to relax deeply and sleep well. Both male and female staff were professional in their service, with warmth that truly came through. Rental bikes were available, so we could cycle around Lake Suwa after check-out, making it a perfectly satisfying day. We look forward to staying again. Thank you very much!

    The staff's attentiveness is excellent.

The building is old, but both the guest rooms and the large public bath are well-maintained with excellent cleanliness and temperature control, ensuring a comfortable stay. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious, with perfect serving speed. Above all, the staff's warm hospitality made me feel as if I had returned to my family home, allowing me to relax completely. It was a soothing experience for my tired body and mind after attending a memorial service. I would love to stay here again when I visit Suwa.

    Stunning View!

We stayed at the accommodation to watch the fireworks over Lake Suwa with our child. The view from the room was amazing, allowing us to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Suwa. It was truly soothing. The bath was spacious, with a perfect temperature, so even our child could stay in for a long time. The karin juice available near the bath exit was also delicious. At the shop, we purchased Kiso lacquer chopsticks. We also appreciated how local specialties and landmarks were introduced throughout the facility. In the lobby, koi fish and turtles were leisurely swimming around, which fascinated our child. The staff were all very kind and even shared some food for feeding when they noticed our child watching the turtles. All meals were delicious, but especially the sashimi—it was exceptional! (Surprising for a landlocked prefecture!) During a jazz concert in the lobby, my son clapped along and had a great time. It was such a wonderful accommodation!

This hotel, booked through IKYU.com, is top-ranked. The room was spacious, and the view from the room (Lake Suwa and nighttime fireworks) was spectacular. Beautiful flower arrangements were displayed throughout, showcasing a spirit of hospitality. Although the staff member guiding us to our room was from abroad, they greeted us politely in Japanese and provided a thorough explanation—truly impressive. Dinner was delicious and very filling. If given the chance, I would love to stay here again. On the second day, I attended the Grape Festival in Shiojiri and purchased plenty of grapes!
