    I had a relaxing stay.

We were able to relax and enjoy a leisurely stay. The only reason for the 4-star rating is that our Room was far from the dining area and bath, and required going up and down stairs. This was mentioned on the website, but we still counted it as a negative point. As for the meals, the portions were generous and very satisfying. It was firefly season, but unfortunately we couldn’t go to see them because it overlapped with dinner time.

An Accommodation where you can unwind with exquisite Yonezawa beef and exceptional hot spring waters

The Onsen water quality is excellent, and you stay pleasantly warm long after your bath. The meals, including Yonezawa beef, were all delicious and very filling. The staff were kind and welcoming, making for a truly relaxing stay. I would love to stay here again when visiting Yonezawa.

The Onsen has a silky-smooth feel, and the open-air bath was wonderful!

I stayed here while visiting Yonezawa for a family matter. I had to wait a little at reception, but they offered welcome sake, which was nice! The Onsen water was silky and exactly to my liking. The temperature was also just right for me. For dinner, I chose the steak and sukiyaki set, and the portions were so large that I couldn’t finish everything. Everything tasted great! Breakfast was also generous, and the small side dishes were delicious too. I was traveling alone, but the semi-private dining area with a noren curtain made it easy to eat without worrying about others—another great point!

    We traveled to Fukus...

We traveled to Fukushima and Yamagata to enjoy seasonal fruit, and stayed our first night at Kajikaso. As soon as we arrived in the parking lot, the staff warmly welcomed us. The Onsen has a faint sulfur scent, with clear water that feels wonderfully soothing. For dinner, when I told a staff member (male) that I had chosen shabu-shabu and steak from the “Selectable Beef Feast Set,” he suggested having the steak first if we planned to drink beer—thanks to his advice, we enjoyed our beer and sake at just the right pace. I usually don’t eat rice at dinner, but it was so good—each grain distinct—that I ended up getting a second serving with the shabu-shabu. The gyudon at breakfast was also delicious. We had car trouble, and even after checkout they kindly let us stay in the lobby for a while to make phone calls, which helped us tremendously. The proprietress came by out of concern as well, and everyone’s hospitality was very attentive—overall we had a comfortable and pleasant stay.

A Hot Spring Accommodation the Whole Family Loved—We Can’t Wait to Stay Again

We stayed as a family of three on the “Room Assigned on Arrival” Plan. Our Room was upgraded, which was a pleasant surprise. There was also a high-end massage chair, and we were able to relax and unwind along with the Onsen. All of the staff were polite and friendly, and their comfortable sense of distance left a great impression. The Yonezawa beef shabu-shabu dinner was delicious, and our whole family was very satisfied. Next time, we’d love to try the sukiyaki as well. In addition to its smooth feel on the skin, the Onsen had visible mineral deposits and a gentle sulfur scent, making it an experience we could enjoy with all five senses. Breakfast was healthy yet offered plenty of variety and generous portions—we left feeling completely full. Everything—from the meals and Onsen to the Room and service—was highly satisfying, and we felt it offered excellent value for money. We would definitely like to return again as a family.

Both the Onsen and the meals were excellent, and we had a relaxing stay.

Five women stayed here. We were very happy that the welcome drink included sake; those of us who like sake were delighted. We arrived late and could only use it until 5:30, so we were in a hurry, but the Accommodation staff were kind and helpful, which was appreciated. The meals were delicious both dinner and breakfast. The Onsen water was also excellent. If I had to mention a downside, it would be that the toilets (both in the Room and outside) feel old. We also noticed that there are few washbasins in the bath area, and they are old as well. Overall, we had a very relaxing stay and it was wonderful.

    A charming, traditional Accommodation

We stayed here for my wife’s birthday. It’s a historic Accommodation, and while there were some inconveniences such as no elevator, the staff’s hospitality was outstanding. You can also make a Reservation for a private Onsen. The water temperature was on the hot side. Because of the lush natural setting, please be aware that there may be insects. The Yonezawa beef at dinner was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Breakfast also offered a wide variety of side dishes, including shiso rolls that gave us a real taste of Yamagata. We were very satisfied.

    Wonderful Memories: Onogawa Onsen Kajikaso

I was deeply impressed by the heartfelt hospitality of everyone at Kajikaso. During my stay, I lost track of time and enjoyed a truly fulfilling experience. The kaiseki dinner was exceptional—each dish was carefully prepared, and I savored it with all five senses. I’d love to have it again. The Onsen was also wonderful; the water felt silky and moisturizing like a beauty serum, leaving my skin smooth. Since the bathing areas rotate by time, the scenery changes completely, which was great fun—I soaked in the Onsen four times during my stay and felt completely refreshed. Conversations with everyone at the Ryokan were delightful, and my mother was very satisfied as well. (Thank you)

An accommodation where you can enjoy the finest Onsen anytime you visit

I went to see fireflies, but unfortunately there were only a few, which was a bit disappointing. Still, I’m glad I could enjoy the same wonderfully relaxing Onsen as always. The bath attendant managed the water temperature appropriately. Even in the early-summer heat, soaking in the Onsen and feeling refreshed afterward was an irreplaceable happiness.

An Accommodation where fireflies dance on Strawberry Moon nights

A park where fireflies dance is just a 5-minute walk from the Accommodation, and we were lucky enough to visit on a full-moon night, which made it even more enjoyable. The Accommodation was a bit dated, but we were satisfied with the Onsen, meals, and service.

It feels more worn and dated than in the photos.

Overall, it felt quite dated. If you arrive expecting it to match the photos, you may be a bit disappointed. The open-air bath was nice, but the indoor bath was just so-so. It was great that you can enjoy sake and other drinks as a welcome drink!

The warm hospitality and superb Onsen made for an unforgettable stay.

We recently stayed in a detached Room. What impressed us most was the quality of the water in the in-room Onsen. With plenty of mineral deposits swirling in the water and a gentle sulfur scent in the air, it was truly a luxurious experience for Onsen lovers. In complete privacy, we were able to fully enjoy the renowned waters of Onogawa Onsen. The dining was equally unforgettable. Each dish was prepared with great care, and we could really feel the chef’s dedication throughout. The Yonezawa beef, in particular, was exceptional—so tender it seemed to melt in our mouths. We had mentioned in advance that my wife does not do well with meat dishes, and on the day you kindly adjusted her menu using other ingredients. We are deeply grateful for such thoughtful attention to detail. Thanks to your consideration, we were able to truly enjoy dinner together. The staff were also wonderful. Everyone greeted us with warm smiles at all times, making our stay inside the Accommodation extremely comfortable.

    The staff were very helpful.

The building feels like it was expanded bit by bit over time, making it almost like a maze. I got lost a few times trying to get back to my Room, but that was part of the fun. The Room we stayed in had an earthen-floor entryway when you opened the door, and the toilet could be accessed directly from there. However, there was a step up to reach the washbasin area and the bedroom, and to go from the bedroom to the washbasin you had to cross a short corridor-like passage about 40 cm wide, which felt like it could be dangerous if you were tipsy. From the window of our twin-bed Room facing the Onogawa River, we could see a row of cherry trees across the water. It’s easy to imagine how beautiful it must be when they’re in bloom. I thought the sound of the river might bother me, but I slept soundly until morning. My wife used the massage chair in our Room and said it felt great. The two large public baths—switched between men and women at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM—were also very relaxing. Although there was a note saying mineral deposits might have settled on the floor, we didn’t see any and felt everything was very well cleaned. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with portions that were just right for us as a couple around 70 years old. At dinner there was a set with sake and beer; when we ordered it, we appreciated how skillfully one staff member poured sake from an almost-empty 1-sho bottle right up to the brim using both a cup and masu without spilling—a perfect surface-tension pour. One more pleasant surprise: gyudon is available as an option for breakfast. We chose gyudon ourselves; at another table someone said they wanted plain rice too, and staff promptly suggested switching to beef topping (gyuzara) with white rice instead. Their quick thinking left a great impression on us. Finally, when we checked out of this Accommodation, we were truly touched by how politely staff saw us off.

An Accommodation for Smooth, Silky Skin

It was a heartwarming Accommodation. The service was kind, and the hot water was excellent. Above all, it’s an Accommodation with great value for money. The Room also has a massage chair, so you can relax and unwind.

    It was a great-value accommodation.

I think this is a very good value Onsen Accommodation. The staff are also polite and attentive. The building is old, but it doesn’t feel unclean. When I went to the large public bath at 9:00 p.m. after dinner, two of the six washing stations were “reserved” with baskets from bath sets. There were other guests as well, so it was a bit inconvenient not having an available station, and I also wondered why they had such an unusually large amount of belongings for guests. The open-air bath is spacious, but the lukewarm one I wanted to use is smaller, and two young women were sitting on opposite edges of the tub chatting, so I waited in the indoor bath for a while. Even after 15 minutes they were still sitting there, so I went outside. Then the two young women hurried inside, finished shampooing at the washing stations they had reserved with baskets, and left. When I went to the changing room to get my towel, I realized those two were foreign staff members here because they were wearing pajamas. After that, another foreign staff member came in and repeatedly washed their face by holding their hands under where the Onsen water flows into the tub. It made me extremely uncomfortable. I have stayed at many Onsen Accommodations, but this was my first time seeing staff come in to use the bath during the 9 p.m. hour. That said, given current circumstances it may be difficult to ask staff to use it much later at night as well. However, I would like staff to finish quickly and refrain from anything that could make other guests uncomfortable. I think proper guidance for foreign staff would be best—they likely just don’t know. Aside from this issue, it was a very nice Accommodation overall. I would like to visit again. Thank you for making improvements where possible.

Although it is an old Ryokan, the sound of frogs was nostalgic and made it a wonderful Accommodation. The Yonezawa beef sukiyaki was exceptional.

The bath in the Room is excellent.

The Facility is old as mentioned in the Review, but the front desk, dining area, and Room have been renovated and were lovely. However, the stairs on the way to the Room are steep, so I felt it would be tough for elderly guests. The in-room Onsen was amazing. I visited in early March, and by the next morning I was able to enjoy a snow-view bath. The window opens, which felt really refreshing. I’d like to visit again during cherry blossom or lotus season. I didn’t use the large public bath because it looked quite old. The meals were great—the Yonezawa beef was delicious. It was also nice to be able to have gyudon for breakfast. I ended up eating too much without meaning to.

A wonderful Accommodation with a calm, relaxing atmosphere.

It was a wonderful Accommodation with a calm, soothing atmosphere. I was able to relax in the spacious room with a massage chair, and enjoy the large indoor bath and open-air bath, both of which had great water quality. The meals were also delicious and just the right amount. I hadn’t had gyudon for breakfast in quite a while, but it wasn’t heavy at all—tasty and energizing to start the day. The staff were well trained and attentive, so I could spend my time comfortably. This is an Accommodation I’d love to stay at again. One note: the hallway is carpeted, but it’s hard to tell where the flat areas end and slightly sloped sections begin, so I almost tripped a few times.

An Accommodation you’ll want to come back to.

This was my second stay this year, and I felt comfortable every time. The food and service were excellent, as expected, but what I especially love is how wonderful the Onsen is. In particular, the very first bath right after the water was replaced felt incredibly fresh and crisp—I was amazed by the sensation of the water soaking in from my skin into my body. I’ve never experienced an Onsen like this before. Highly recommended for anyone who loves hot springs.

The Room, Onsen, and meals are all excellent.

Overall, it was a wonderful Ryokan and we had a great time. Check-in was crowded and the wait was long, but perhaps because there were vacancies, our Room was upgraded and we enjoyed a stay that exceeded the price. All of the staff provided thoughtful service to help guests spend even a little more comfortable time, which made our stay even more enjoyable. We couldn’t use the private Onsen baths because they were fully booked, but the shared bath was spacious and we were able to fully enjoy Onogawa Onsen. For dinner we had Yonezawa beef sukiyaki, and it was so good I can honestly say it was the best beef I’ve ever had. Breakfast was also delicious and very filling, so we were extremely satisfied. If we have a chance to visit Yonezawa again, we would love to come back. Thank you very much.

    A Thoughtfully Attentive Accommodation

I was looking for an Accommodation where I could relax and reach by bus from Yonezawa Station, so I chose to stay here. After reading various Reviews, I had some concerns, but in a good way those worries were unfounded—I felt thoughtful care in many places, and it is a wonderful Accommodation. It’s true that some of the Facility shows its age and there were a few things that made me uneasy, but the renovated Room was clean and came with a massage chair. There was also a small table and chairs by the window, so I could take a break while enjoying the view or plan my trip. I also liked the indirect lighting and the bright colors of the sliding doors. Meals were served in semi-private dining spaces, so we could eat at a relaxed pace. We enjoyed Yonezawa beef, and they also had a rare sake I had wanted to try. They even helped celebrate our anniversary, which made me very happy. The gyudon at breakfast was delicious as well. Overall there were quite a few cold dishes, so it might be even better if there were more warm items. The Yonezawa sake tasting and the coffee service after breakfast were also great. It may not be a major sightseeing spot, but we could take walks along the nearby river and spend time at an unhurried pace. The open-air bath had well-maintained scenery around it and felt wonderful. I usually get overheated easily and can’t soak for long, but for some reason this Onsen never left me tired even after multiple baths. I really enjoyed alternating between soaking in the Onsen and resting in the massage chair. With such spacious grounds, keeping everything clean and safe must take tremendous effort. It was clear that everyone—including the proprietress—works very hard. This is an Accommodation I would recommend both to experienced travelers and to families who want to relax together.

An Accommodation with Outstanding Massage Chairs and Excellent Dining

I visited for the excellent quality of Onsen at Onogawa, and I was able to relax not only in the Onsen but also in the wonderful massage chair in my room. Above all, the meals were outstanding—beautifully presented, generous in portion, and with excellent-quality meat. The staff were also very pleasant and welcoming. I regret not choosing the Yonezawa beef feast course. I would love to stay again.

    This was my first vi...

This was my first visit to Onogawa Onsen. It seems there is a bus from Yonezawa Station about once an hour, but I took a taxi instead (about 4,500 yen). The building has a well-worn, historic feel, and since it is not barrier-free, it may be difficult for guests with limited mobility. Because of its age, the interior can feel a bit dim, but my Room was a renovated river-view Room, and I fully enjoyed the natural scenery along the river with no man-made structures in sight. There were animal-like footprints on the piled-up snow, which was fun to wonder about. Both dinner and breakfast were served in private dining rooms, so even as a solo traveler I could relax and enjoy my meals without concern. A foreign staff member kindly explained each dish with great effort. The meals offered a wide variety of carefully prepared dishes, and the Yonezawa beef was especially delicious. The free-flowing Onsen had plenty of mineral deposits floating in it and warmed me thoroughly. I also used the private bath and truly enjoyed it. The next day, I joined the “Onogawa Onsen Mame Moyashi” harvest experience (brochures are also available at the Accommodation). It’s a winter-only seasonal activity and was very enjoyable. The mame moyashi I brought home tasted great. I was very satisfied with the rich nature, delicious food, and warming Onsen. I would love to visit again if I have the chance. (Solo female trip #5-1)
