An accommodation where you can unwind with art and an onsen

Staying at this Accommodation had been a dream of mine, and I was thrilled to finally make it happen. Our Room was on the second floor, with a view straight out to the weeping cherry tree and the Naka River. The building itself was spacious, filled with many works of art on display, and the garden was beautifully designed. We also enjoyed the evening post-road tour and the early-morning warehouse museum tour. The Onsen—known as a medicinal bath—had wonderful water quality, and we were able to relax in the new open-air bath. Both breakfast and dinner were served in our Room, allowing us to take our time savoring locally sourced dishes. The hospitality was warm and comforting, making this a truly healing trip. Next time, I’d love to visit during cherry blossom season. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

An Accommodation that feels just right and comfortable

A round wooden table is set by the window, offering a view of the beautiful garden from a clean, uncluttered Room. The bathroom has pleasantly warm water that is gentle on the skin—not too hot. The meals were delicious, with just the right portions and saltiness. And all the staff greeted us with calm, warm smiles. Everything felt comfortable, and we had a truly wonderful holiday. The location was also easy to reach, so I’d love to return as a place to unwind when I’m tired—and next time, I hope to stay for a Multiple Night Stay. Thank you very much for such a relaxing time.

In-room dining even when traveling solo

This was my first stay. I had checked the Accommodation’s website in advance, but the moment I arrived, my first impression was a “tasteful, understated Accommodation.” The building shows its age, but it is spotless and very well maintained down to every detail. In the Room, there were loose-leaf green tea and roasted green tea (not tea bags), which was a nice touch—having proper Japanese tea made me happy. Dinner and breakfast are included, and both were incredibly delicious! The portions are generous as well. The rice served in an ohitsu was also amazing. Since meals are served in the Room, I could eat at my own pace, which was perfect. I was also really looking forward to the free-flowing hot spring water straight from the source. It turned out to be excellent. It rained on the day I stayed, but the open-air bath has a proper roof so you don’t get wet at all. I enjoyed it three times during my stay. Breakfast was outstanding too. In short, it felt like an “unflashy but deeply relaxing Accommodation.” I’d love to visit again when I need to reset and unwind.

    This year as well

Last year, I invited some friends and stayed here, and this year we were able to visit again around the same time because they really wanted to come back. I have visited several times for family events, and we were welcomed with the same warm smiles as always. The delicious, heartfelt meals, the well-kept and comfortable Room, and the bath that felt truly refreshing made for a wonderful stay. It’s already on our schedule for next year too—we’re looking forward to it. Thank you very much.

    Thank you for your support.

It had been a while since my last stay, but once again I thoroughly enjoyed the bath, in-room dining, and the sound gathering. I will definitely stay here again. Thank you very much.

Relax and unwind in peaceful silence

I found Daikokuya while looking for an Accommodation for therapeutic bathing to help with knee joint pain. I was very satisfied to soak in the Onsen at a relaxed pace and enjoy delicious meals. Every area was clean, and I had a very comfortable stay.

The garden is stunning! This Accommodation was truly moving.

I hadn’t known about Itamuro Onsen before, but it turned out to be wonderful. The Accommodation’s garden is beautifully maintained, and you can fully enjoy a warm, relaxing atmosphere that feels distinctly Japanese. There is also an open-air bath in the Onsen, where you can soak at your leisure while looking out over the garden—an unhurried design that lets you truly unwind. For some reason, no one else was there when I bathed, which made it even more enjoyable. While preserving the charm of a traditional Ryokan, it has been updated in a modern and refined way; it was a great Hotel that offered a uniquely satisfying experience. The only disappointment was that I felt the guest rooms could have included at least a shower room.

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To

A truly repeat-worthy Accommodation that never feels dull or disappointing, no matter when you visit. The greatest highlight is the baths. The open-air bath is wonderful, but I especially love the simple, beautiful indoor bath. With two tubs at different temperatures—neither too hot—you can alternate between them and relax for a long soak. Although the water may be gently warmed via a heat exchanger depending on the season, it is 100% free-flowing from the source with no added water at all, and you can really feel how carefully its natural qualities are preserved. Another popular Facility is “Ataraxia,” a low-temperature sauna-like room; it’s not stifling, lets you sweat comfortably, and I slept soundly afterward. The meals are not the typical “lavish Ryokan feast you can’t possibly finish,” nor heavy local beef loaded with marbling. Nothing is overly showy, but everything tastes excellent, and both portion size and seasoning are perfectly balanced. It’s also great that even on a Multiple Night Stay, the food remains just as enjoyable as on the first night. After dinner you bring your tray out to the hallway yourself, but I didn’t find it bothersome at all. There is always some kind of art exhibition in-house, which adds to this Accommodation’s distinctive sense of escape from everyday life. Service is pleasantly understated and creates a comfortable sense of distance. Overall it’s very quiet—an Accommodation I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who simply wants to focus on the hot springs and themselves in peace.

    Cherry blossoms in full bloom!

This is my favorite Accommodation, and I try to visit at least once a year. This was my first time during cherry blossom season, and I was lucky to stay right when they were in full bloom. The nighttime cherry blossom viewing by the bonfire was also magical.

    Time passed at a rel...

Time passed at a relaxed pace, and we had a very comfortable stay. The staff were pleasant and worked efficiently. That said, there were a few things that concerned us. - We lost our Room key somewhere and couldn’t find it even after searching. When we called the front desk, we were told they had it. Normally, I would expect to be contacted as soon as it was turned in, but we received no notice at all, which was very disappointing. - After meals, the teacups and glasses from the Room were cleared away together with the dishes, but they were not brought back. - An item that appeared to have been left behind by another guest remained in the bathroom for our entire stay. - The amenities included cleansing oil, toner, and lotion, but I would like facial soap to be provided as well. That’s all.

    I had a few concerns...

I had a few concerns about dinner. First, dinner started 15 minutes late without any prior notice. A brief explanation would have made a big difference. Breakfast was also delayed. Also, we were told this was to “reduce the number of servings so guests can relax and focus on the meal,” but in reality all dishes except the grilled item were served at once. As a result, the food cooled down and it was difficult to pace the meal. The grilled item served later was described as “just finished,” but it was already cold, which was disappointing. The menu and portion size also felt more like breakfast than dinner. In addition, the beer I ordered wasn’t cold enough and arrived lukewarm, and an extra dish we requested took so long that we couldn’t enjoy it with sake. I was also concerned that a drink we did not order was included on the bill. Overall, I had been looking forward to the meal, so this fell short of expectations.

    Treat yourself

This was an Accommodation I had wanted to visit for a long time. It’s a great place to relax in peace and quiet. The meals were especially delicious, with gentle flavors—I finished everything. I also tried the sake tasting set, and it was the first time in a while that I found a Japanese sake I truly enjoyed. I’d love to come again in a different season.

I’d love to stay here again.

First of all, the hot spring water is excellent. It feels gentle on the skin and is slightly lukewarm, so you can soak for a long time. I was a little worried it might get crowded since it seems popular with women, but perhaps because I went at different times, I was able to relax and enjoy it. The bath is available all night. I understand that in-room dining can be difficult in some places, but there were many thoughtful touches—such as an individual hot pot and miso soup to warm up—and I enjoyed a delicious meal. It was a single Room, but very spacious, and the large window felt wonderful. The garden is also beautifully maintained, and I would love to see the scenery in another season as well. All of the staff were very pleasant, and it’s about two hours from central Tokyo—quiet and perfect for spending a slow, relaxing time. This has become one of the Accommodations I’d like to visit again.

I keep coming back to this relaxing Accommodation. The Onsen is simply wonderful. The meals are delicious, and the Room feels as comfortable as home. This Accommodation has a unique charm that makes you want to visit again and again.

    I'm sorry to hear that...

The Ryokan had a very artistic and calming atmosphere, which was great. However, the rock bath area only had two spaces for lying down, and when I entered, there were no extra baskets in the changing area. I went to the front desk to check, and while they brought three baskets from the men's section for me to carry back, they ended up being used by people who came after me. Additionally, the shampoo provided was terrible. As soon as I applied it, my hair became rough and tangled to the point where fingers couldn't pass through it easily; drying my hair afterward was also a struggle. I believe it would be better to provide a more universally suitable shampoo that works well for all hair types. Lastly, there was no partition between the sink area and toilet in the Room's bathroom, which made it inconvenient to use.

I thoroughly enjoyed the autumn leaves.

It felt very historical. The bath area was narrow. The tea from the iron kettle outside was delicious. You’ve put a lot of thought into various aspects. It was enjoyable. The Facility overall felt cold. The town feels deserted, which is a bit sad.

    A Journey to Nasu Highlands

I stayed at an accommodation in the 20,000 yen range per person for the first time. It was very comfortable, and experiencing each detail was truly enjoyable. The sound of the river and insects, the colors of autumn leaves and fresh flowers, the delicious aromas, and the comforting flavor of tea—just remembering it makes me happy. They even provided a guide with illustrations because it was stink bug season. Such thoughtfulness! What left a particularly strong impression on me was the hospitality of the gentleman who came to pick us up. Despite us being who we are, he treated us just like any other guest, which made me very happy. I will definitely visit again!

    Accommodation preferred by women.

Upon arrival, I provided my name outside before entering the entrance, but it was not communicated further, and I was left unattended. While I understand the intention to minimize contact with staff, the service felt slightly lacking. The meals were delicious, and the serving process was smooth. As there are many female guests, the bath can get crowded at times. Considering the price point, some improvements would be appreciated. The Onsen itself is excellent. The Room had a large empty space; having a sofa or similar furniture would be appreciated.

The accommodation is located in a stunning location right in front of a mountain stream. The meals were incredibly delicious and left a lasting impression. It seems they source their rice with great care, and I’ve never had such tasty rice before. I will definitely return!

The English-speaking front desk staff was very kind and helpful. They arranged the shuttle bus to the Hotel for the next day, which was a great help. Without their assistance, I wouldn't have known how to reach the Hotel the following day.

    Truly a Relaxing Accommodation

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city, forget about work for a while, and immerse yourself in the soothing hot springs. Fall asleep to the gentle sounds of Nakagawa River and chirping insects in serene silence. This accommodation is highly recommended for those seeking such a peaceful retreat. Thanks to this place, I was truly able to relax both body and mind. Unlike other accommodations or hotels where I often find myself checking work emails, here it felt almost magical how I had no urge to do so. The staff were attentive and thoughtful, making my stay worry-free. The open-air bath was exceptional, providing deep relaxation at Ataraxia. The on-site café "Suikintei" was delightful—the rice balls were delicious! Next time, I'd love to try their sweets. During the night tour, we learned about stars, autumn insects, and even some local history. It gave me insight into why Daikokuya takes pride in its long-standing tradition of hospitality. Artworks by up-and-coming artists are displayed here as well; you can even purchase your favorites! Since exhibits change seasonally, it makes me want to visit regularly just to see new pieces. As expected from an established inn with history, the rooms have a vintage charm but are renovated where necessary for cleanliness. Surprisingly more calming than flashy luxury hotels! However, amenities might be minimal—women may want to bring their own skincare products or personal items for grooming. I’ve found a wonderful accommodation. I'll definitely return when life gets overwhelming again for another relaxing stay!

    Highly recommended.

This ryokan offers a complete and enjoyable experience within its premises. There are countless great aspects to mention. One memorable moment was during breakfast in the room when I looked out the window and saw a monkey walking on what seemed like a rope stretched over the river, reminding me that I was surrounded by nature. The night tour exploring around the ryokan was also delightful, and I spent time gazing at the night sky for the first time in a while. The only slight downside was that the hinoki bath felt small, with only two washing areas, which led to some overlap with other guests and required moving to another bath. The meals were well-portioned, served efficiently, and made good use of fresh ingredients—very satisfying overall. I also enjoyed visiting the warehouse art museum as well as spending time in the cozy garden where I could easily lose track of time. Thank you for your hospitality!

I believe this is the most stylish Onsen accommodation in the world.

I fell in love with the interior of the single room featured on yoi and made a Reservation. The Room was just as stylish as I had hoped, and I had a very comfortable stay. It was a space that made me want to stay forever. I loved being able to borrow books from the library and disconnect from electronic devices during my stay. Additionally, there were many thoughtful touches, such as making tea with Nambu ironware at the outdoor hearth or choosing your favorite vase and flowers to bring to your Room. The lobby was also beautiful, offering an art exhibition for guests to enjoy. During my visit, Mashiko pottery and wooden furniture were on display, which seemed available for purchase. The Onsen is an alkaline hot spring with clear water at a pleasantly mild temperature—truly relaxing. Personally, I loved the hinoki (cypress) bath for its soothing aroma and tranquil atmosphere. For those who dislike insects during summer outdoor baths, I recommend entering while it’s raining. Another highlight is the rare opportunity to experience yellow clay bathing. The meals were all refined in flavor and delicious. Even though I usually dislike yogurt, I managed to finish theirs completely—it was that good! Perhaps it was just during my stay, but they also offered rare vintage beer, which delighted me. I now understand why there are so many repeat visitors—I’d love to come back again!

    From check-in to che...

From check-in to check-out, we enjoyed a satisfying stay with the staff's attentive service and the Hotel's unique art experiences. Despite the scorching afternoon heat, we were warmly guided during parking with advice to watch out for horseflies. The check-in & check-out process, in-room dining service, craft exhibitions, indoor chamber music concerts as part of hotel events, and night tours around the Hotel grounds featuring explanations about nature and history were all fascinating and exceeded our expectations. It was an enjoyable and educational experience. Thank you very much! The facilities, amenities, and Room were sufficient and comfortable for us; however, compared to a typical 4-star Hotel, some may find the lack of amenities or stocked drinks in the refrigerator less satisfying. Personally, I appreciated this moderate provision as it felt sustainable and well-suited for me.

    I've always wanted to visit.

The view from the room is amazing. It was not too crowded as we visited on a weekday, which was nice. The Onsen is gentle, soothing to the skin, and perfect for summer. The room is spacious, and having in-room dining allowed us to relax comfortably. We had a very relaxing stay.

It was my first visit to Daikokuya in years. We were warmly welcomed with the same friendly smiles, and my friends who accompanied me were also very satisfied.
