    We are very satisfied!

    We had a wonderfully relaxing stay from the 3:00 PM check-in until checkout the next day. Everyone on the Ryokan staff was very kind and welcomed us warmly. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and more than we could finish, but it felt wasteful to leave any, so we did our best and ate almost everything. The Onsen water was excellent, and thanks to it, my child’s cold and my lower back pain improved a lot. After checkout, we went around to different public baths, and it was a big help that they not only stored our luggage but also drove us there. Thanks to the outstanding hospitality of the proprietress and all the staff, it became a truly memorable trip.

    Looking for a nearby Onsen when you visit Ueda for soba? Bessho Onsen is quiet and surrounded by nature, with many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Are there any other Onsen like this? We stayed at Nakamatsuya near Kitamuki Kannon. Even though it was before 3:00 p.m., we were shown to our Room, which had a wonderful view of the Kannon statue and the Shioda Plain. In the distance we could see Mt. Asama and Shiga Kogen, and at night the city lights were beautiful. The bath was also an open-air rooftop view bath—neither too hot nor too lukewarm—and warmed us through. Dinner started with a medicinal carrot aperitif and soup, followed by an outstanding Shinshu beef steak. Breakfast was also very satisfying. What impressed us most was the staff’s smiles—especially the dining service staff, the lobby coffee service staff, and those who saw us off. The proprietress’s smile was always there as well. Thank you very much—your complexion looked radiant (though I did gain a little weight).

    The meals were absolutely delicious.

    This was my first stay in Bessho Onsen. “Shinshu’s Kamakura” was quiet and a wonderful place for a stroll. Thank you to the proprietress and all the staff for your warm hospitality and thoughtful care. Every dish was carefully prepared and truly delicious. I was amazed by the large beams in the Room. For the kotatsu floor chair, I think a chair-style seat might be easier on the legs, and if the paper coffee cups in the lounge had lids, it would be possible to take them back to the Room. This is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again in a different season.

    Despite the last-minute Reservation,

    Despite making a last-minute Reservation on the day, we were truly impressed that the Accommodation called in advance to confirm details and carefully accommodated our allergy needs. Upon arrival, the proprietress personally welcomed us, asked our child’s name, and continued to address them by name throughout our stay—such warm hospitality that we will never forget. The beautiful mountain views of Shinshu from the sauna were exceptional, allowing us to enjoy a luxurious escape from everyday life. Both dinner and breakfast were wonderfully lavish, and we also appreciated the partitions designed so guests wouldn’t make eye contact with others, ensuring privacy was well protected. With many Ryokan in the area closing down, we sincerely hope this Accommodation—offering such outstanding hospitality—will continue for many years to come. We would love to visit again.

    It was a truly wonde...

    It was a truly wonderful Ryokan. From the Room, we enjoyed views of Shiodadaira and Ueda City, and we were completely satisfied with everything—the rooftop Onsen and the meals were especially excellent. Diagonally across the street was an Onsen said to have been used by Yukimura Sanada and Lady Go, making this a lovely Onsen Accommodation filled with historical romance.

    Thank you for your hospitality. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was excellent, allowing us to relax and unwind. The Onsen was great, and we especially enjoyed the scenic view bath. The meals were delicious and served in just the right portions—not too much or too little. If we have the opportunity, we would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    Welcome.

    It felt like home even though it was only my second stay—I was truly soothed not only by the Onsen, but also by the owner and staff. A wonderful, highly recommended Accommodation where you can say, “I’m home.” You can also take your time enjoying walks around the area, including National Treasures and public bathhouses.

    It was very relaxing.

    The fun began right from the Shuttle Service ride. The bath was amazing, the views were amazing, the food was amazing, and both the drinks and rice were delicious. The lovely hostess and kind staff made everything truly soothing. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again.

    I heard this is a Ryokan with a 300-year history. The proprietress and staff were attentive and guest-focused, making my stay very comfortable. Each dish was carefully prepared, and I truly enjoyed the delicious meal.

    As noted in the Reviews, this was a comfortable Ryokan that made us want to come back. The Onsen left our skin silky smooth, and it was such a pleasant bath that we wanted to stay in it forever. The staff were cheerful and kind, and they warmed our hearts.

    We had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay.

    I visit Bessho Onsen about five times a year, but this was my first stay at Ryokan Nakamatsuya. What impressed me most was the warm hospitality from the beautiful and friendly proprietress and the staff—every detail felt truly heartfelt. The Room, baths, and both dinner and breakfast were all beyond my expectations. I would like to stay here as often as possible in the future.

    Accommodation with a Great View You'll Want to Visit Again

    Bessho Onsen, the oldest Onsen in Shinshu, has a history dating back approximately 1,400 years (Asuka period). The Ryokan is located on the mountain side of this area, offering rooms with stunning views of Mount Asama, the Sugadaira mountains, and Ueda Basin. The North-Facing Kannon Hall (a highlight of Bessho Onsen sightseeing) is just a stone's throw away. You can also reach Anrakuji Temple with its octagonal three-story pagoda (a national treasure) and Jorakuji Temple (an important cultural property) within about a 10-minute walk each. If you're lucky, you might meet the charming hostess with a warm smile (resembling Misako Tanaka), but all staff members are lively and provide excellent hospitality for a pleasant stay. The Onsen features mildly alkaline water known for its skin-beautifying properties. Meals were deliciously prepared with care by skilled chefs using carefully selected ingredients. The sun-dried Koshihikari rice from Yaehara was exceptionally tasty as well... I feel rejuvenated both physically and mentally after my stay here. Thank you for such a wonderful time!

    Amid the cold wave, we were able to relax and feel warm.

    The weather was great with no snow, it was perfect. The Room came with an Onsen, and I was surprised at how reasonable the price was. I was especially impressed by the Hinoki bath with natural hot spring water directly flowing into it in the Room. Dinner included Shinshu beef, which was so delicious it melted in my mouth. A perfect 100 out of 100!

    A room with historic thick beams, relax by the kotatsu in the adjoining space.

    Thank you for upgrading us to the luxurious room we saw last time. The kotatsu was a sunken-style, allowing us to fully enjoy the winter Onsen Ryokan experience. From the room, we could see the north-facing Kannon, and this traditional Ryokan of perfect size offered delicious meals made with plenty of local ingredients, making our stay truly refreshing. Even my grandchildren living abroad mentioned they wished they could have joined us!

    An Accommodation You'll Want to Visit Again

    On January 18th, my wife and I stayed at this accommodation. We were guided by the hostess to a traditional Japanese-style room with a charming old-house design. The high ceiling with thick wooden beams, the spacious tatami room with a heated table, and another room with beds featuring a flowing layout were all wonderful. My wife enjoyed bathing six times, including in the private bath in our room. Both dinner and breakfast were delightful experiences thanks to the delicious dishes and the attentive service of the staff. I have issues with my legs and back, so while I managed to visit Kitamuki Kannon Temple on the first day, I had given up on visiting Anrakuji Temple and Jorakuji Temple. However, thanks to the thoughtful arrangements made by this accommodation's staff, I was able to visit both temples on the second day. Seeing Hakkaku Sanju-no-to (the octagonal three-storied pagoda) in person was truly moving. They also kindly dropped us off at Bessho Onsen Station. As we rode away on a train with round windows swaying gently along its path, we felt immense gratitude towards everyone at this wonderful accommodation. It was an incredibly lovely place to stay!

    The Best Accommodation Experience

    We stayed as a group of five male classmates. Located about a 10-minute uphill walk from Bessho Onsen Station on the Ueda Dentetsu Bessho Line, it is right in front of Kitamuki Kannon. It’s also about a 6-minute walk to Anrakuji Temple and the National Treasure Octagonal Three-Storied Pagoda. While you can walk from the station to the accommodation, there is also shuttle service and cars that go around nearby ryokans, making it very convenient. Bessho Onsen is a quiet, traditional onsen town with almost no foreign tourists. However, it doesn’t feel desolate or inconvenient at all. It’s an excellent place to enjoy good onsen, accommodations, and delicious meals. Upon arrival at the accommodation, we were warmly welcomed and checked in at the lounge. The proprietress guided us to our room while explaining about the accommodation facilities. This time, thanks to their kindness, our room was upgraded to a spacious detached room. The elegant furnishings and traditional design of the room exuded charm and history. The detached building built during the Meiji era provided an exceptional stay with its unique atmosphere. From the top-floor onsen bath, you can enjoy views of Ueda City and Shinshu's mountains. The onsen water is mildly alkaline simple sulfur spring known for its skin-beautifying properties; my skin felt smooth after bathing. Dinner began with aperitifs and appetizers followed by an exquisite kaiseki course meal prepared with great care. We had an opportunity to hear stories from the proprietress about Bessho Onsen's history as well as that of this ryokan. While preferences may vary among individuals today when such traditional ryokans are becoming rare—this experience left me deeply moved by their hospitality rooted in tradition. From warm welcomes extended by everyone including staff members led under leadership like hers—their attentive services truly enhanced overall value offered here! Having traveled across Japan extensively—I must say staying here created unforgettable memories etched forever within hearts!

    Bright hospitality and relaxing Onsen.

    We stayed as a family of three, including our son who returned home from Tokyo for the first time in a while during the New Year holidays. The hostess and all the staff were genuinely cheerful and provided excellent service. The delicious meals and the perfectly warm Onsen that warmed us to the core left our entire family feeling refreshed both physically and mentally. Thank you so much!

    Family-friendly accommodation :)

    We stayed as a group of three, including my 8-month-old daughter and my mother. It was our first time visiting Bessho Onsen, and after researching accommodations with natural hot spring water, we decided on Nakamatsuya. Although there was a baby-friendly plan available, we opted for the regular plan since my daughter had already turned 8 months old and had become accustomed to traveling to various onsens since she was about 3 months old. In terms of our experience, this was the best accommodation we've stayed at with a baby so far! First of all, the staff's hospitality was exceptional. They communicated seamlessly through their headsets, ensuring everything went smoothly without any issues. My daughter also enjoyed interacting with everyone who kindly spoke to her often. The baby-sized yukata with an adorable apple pattern made us happy! The amenities included towels and toothbrushes for children as well. There was even a diaper disposal bin in the room, and during meals, they provided a high chair (reclining type) along with tableware for babies. We happened to have a private dining room where they brought out toys after our meal so that my daughter could play freely on the tatami mats while we enjoyed our meal at ease. The private onsen in our room was spacious and allowed us to relax fully. I personally visited the public bath alone at night—the night view from there was stunning! It's rare to find public baths offering natural hot spring water directly sourced like this one—it truly stood out! There is also a small kids' space near the front desk area. The other guests were calm and composed; some were international visitors but everyone seemed relaxed and quiet during their stay. Many guests even interacted warmly with us. We would love to visit again someday! Thank you very much!

    Perfect for a family of four!

    A long-awaited family trip. The children have grown and are now adult-sized. The spacious Room is an elegant Japanese-style room where four people could relax and enjoy the same space together. The Japanese course meal made with plenty of local ingredients, the open-air bath with a great view, and the attentive care of the staff made the entire family completely satisfied.

    The Ultimate Relaxation Ryokan

    I had used the public Onsen several times before, but this was my first stay at the accommodation! It is a small, traditional Ryokan with a clean interior, truly wonderful Onsen and cuisine, and above all, the staff's hospitality made for an incredibly pleasant experience. Thank you very much.     I had a relaxing and leisurely time.

    Blessed with good weather, we enjoyed the beautiful autumn leaves and the fragrant, delicious matsutake mushrooms at their peak. We had a relaxing and leisurely stay. The staff were all incredibly kind and attentive, which was the most delightful part of our experience. The simple floral arrangements placed here and there, as well as the photos and paintings near the elevator, reflected thoughtful attention to detail. The tatami-covered hallways were comfortable to walk on without slippers. Everything was perfect. Thank you very much. Is it perhaps a characteristic of Shinshu hospitality? The meal portions felt quite generous!

    The price, Facility, and bath were all very satisfying. Dinner was quite filling, which I thoroughly enjoyed, though it might have been a bit much for my parents. Breakfast was just the right amount. The bath was relaxing enough to stay in for a long time at night, and there is also a sauna. We visited during the last period when matsutake mushroom dishes were available. It was a very relaxing stay. Thank you very much!

    My wife invited her father-in-law, who is over 90 years old, and her mother-in-law, who is in her 90s, by herself. When I requested consideration for accessibility due to the elderly guests, we received a call from the staff. They provided excellent hospitality with arrangements such as bed preparation and round-trip shuttle service to and from the station. All three of them were very satisfied. Choosing Nakamatsuya was definitely the right decision. Since my wife rated it all 5 stars, I am giving it all 5 stars as well!

    Please improve the customer service.

    Stayed at the accommodation right in front of Kitamuki Kannon for its first public opening in 64 years. Before breakfast, I asked about the opening time, and a staff member said it was already open. However, when I went there, it wasn’t accessible yet. The actual opening started at 9 AM. Since this accommodation operates right by Kitamuki Kannon and charges higher prices during this period, staff should at least be knowledgeable about basic information like visiting hours. Additionally, during dinner and breakfast service, a staff member’s kimono sleeve carelessly touched my glass (which I had been drinking from), making me very uncomfortable. When explaining dishes while serving food, they leaned over excessively close to the table without straightening up or wearing masks—this caused saliva to spray onto the food being served, which felt extremely unhygienic and unpleasant. Normally one would stand upright before explaining or wear a mask while doing so. The way they leaned over while serving made it seem like saliva was constantly spraying onto the food—it felt very unsanitary. Also, they cleared dishes without asking even though we were still eating. Overall, the staff seemed unmotivated; please allow guests to enjoy their meals more leisurely!

    Rewarding Accommodation

    The staff's warm smiles were incredibly comforting. Although it was raining upon arrival, the quick parking guidance and offering of umbrellas with cheerful smiles were truly wonderful. The beautifully crafted and colorful meals were absolutely delicious. We chose the Matsutake & Sukiyaki course, which included Matsutake mushrooms in various dishes, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. The aperitif was also a rare Matsutake sake. Upon departure, we were sent off to our car with lovely smiles once again, making this trip truly relaxing and memorable. Thank you very much!

    Thanks to Nakamatsuya, we were able to enjoy Bessho Onsen.

    Bessho Onsen was a wonderful place. Centered around Kitamuki Kannon, the small accommodations each had their own charm. There were several public baths within walking distance, creating a nostalgic and traditional onsen town atmosphere. The friendly hospitality of the proprietress and staff, the generous servings of food and sake, and the wildflowers arranged throughout the accommodation all reflected their spirit of "omotenashi" (hospitality). It’s easy to see why there are so many regular guests. The view from the large bath on the top floor was spectacular. Both morning and evening were delightful, so I bathed multiple times. The flexibility with shuttle service was greatly appreciated. Starting next month, with Kitamuki Kannon's first unveiling in 64 years and matsutake mushroom season approaching, it will likely be bustling with visitors. I hope all staff members take care of their health while continuing to provide excellent hospitality. With convenient transportation access, I look forward to visiting again someday!

    Enjoy a Matsutake mushroom feast for dinner at Bessho Onsen.

    Thank you for remembering the time when my daughter's family stayed last summer. My elementary school-aged grandchildren, who live overseas, enjoyed the homely service of the Ryokan. This time, I visited with my sister and relished a dinner featuring matsutake mushrooms. The Room offered a panoramic view from the top floor to Shiodadaira, and the view from the sauna was also spectacular. We were shown a historic Room with magnificent beams and were sent off by the 9th-generation proprietress and her handsome 10th-generation son. The flowers arranged throughout were beautiful as well. Every detail was thoughtfully attended to, allowing us to spend a very pleasant time.

    A Trip with Grandchildren

    We decided to stay at Nakamatsuya Accommodation, known for being child-friendly, as our trip with my grandchild was planned suddenly. During our stay, the ryokan's hostess and all the staff treated us kindly with warm smiles, which made us very satisfied! The room's bath was spacious enough to stretch out and relax. The meals were delicious, and everyone left fully satisfied. We look forward to visiting you all again!

    It was a wonderful accommodation!

    I stayed alone this time, and everyone from the reception staff to the shuttle service driver and the hostess was wonderful! They kindly recommended great places to visit and chatted with me while serving meals, which made me really happy. The entire facility was clean, and even though I tend to be a bit particular about cleanliness, I had no concerns at all. The public bath wasn't very large, but it had an open-air bath and a sauna, which were great! I would love to visit again soon.
