    A Heartwarming Accommodation

    My wife, our two children, and I stayed here. The property was very clean, so even our young children could feel safe and comfortable. The food was delicate and delicious throughout. Above all, the staff were kind, and we had a truly pleasant stay. We would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much!!

    Everything was extremely satisfying.

    From the moment we arrived until we left, the hospitality was truly wonderful and deeply impressed us. The proprietress quickly remembered my daughter’s name and even came to greet us at dinner, and the staff who served our meal had such warm smiles. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food. We were also able to relax and fully enjoy the Onsen. I was happy that we could take a photo with the proprietress when we checked out. We would love to visit again, and we appreciate your continued hospitality.

    Thanks to your wonderful hospitality, we had the best anniversary!

    From start to finish, the staff’s hospitality was outstanding, making this a truly memorable trip. When asked at check-in, I mentioned that we were traveling for an anniversary. It seems the team shared the information, as we received congratulatory messages several times, which made us very happy. At dinner, they even treated us to complimentary drinks. I love sake, so being able to enjoy plenty of it was wonderful. Both of us look forward most to a Ryokan’s meals, and every dish was prepared with such care that we couldn’t help but admire each one as we ate together. The fish dishes in particular stayed with me—both the flavor and the tender texture were exceptional. The Onsen is compact, but the view from up in the mountains feels wonderfully open, and having a sauna as well made it even more satisfying. Our Room also had a great view and was comfortable thanks to clean, well-maintained Facility features. Even after checkout, they offered Shuttle Service timed to our train. We gladly accepted and were able to relax in the lobby with coffee before heading out. Thank you for an unforgettable one-night stay.

    From the moment we arrived, we were overwhelmed by the warm smiles of the proprietress and all the staff. The Room was just as expected, and we really enjoyed the delicious meals. Their smiles were wonderful right up until they saw us off at departure. If I had to mention one thing, it would have been even better if we could open a window in the in-room bath to let in some fresh air, so we could soak longer. The proprietress sang “Happy Birthday” beautifully.

    It was a well-balanced Ryokan in every way.

    This Accommodation truly made me think, “I’m so glad I stayed here!” The proprietress and the staff were all warm and welcoming, and everything was kept very clean, so it was extremely comfortable. The meals were wonderfully well-balanced in flavor, and for once I finished everything. In particular, the chilled simmered summer vegetables were delicious and had a great texture. Breakfast didn’t feel repetitive either—I enjoyed it all without getting tired of it. The small flowers displayed along the hallway were also very soothing. The next day, I was surprised when one of the staff called out to me at Togakushi Ninja Village, but that became a great memory too! It made me really happy!

    An Accommodation that offers warm, heartfelt hospitality

    Because we decided on a whim the night before, we didn’t have much time to compare options in detail, so we made our Reservation based largely on the overall feel of the Reviews—and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. There’s no doubt this is a historic Accommodation, but the proprietress and all the staff were cheerful and friendly. They actively engaged with our children, remembered their names perfectly, and spoke to them often, which really stood out. At some Accommodations you can sometimes feel differences in attentiveness depending on the person, but here it was clear that the proprietress’s approach is consistently shared throughout the entire Accommodation. And as you’d expect from such a long-established place, the Onsen water quality was outstanding. The Room we stayed in had an indoor bath supplied with Onsen water as well, so we were able to fully enjoy it both in our Room and in the large public bath. The water in the Room bath was a bit hotter than in the public bath, but we could adjust it with cold water so it wasn’t an issue. Even though we stayed only one night, we soaked many times and our fingertips felt wonderfully smooth. The large public bath switches between men and women from 19:30 to 20:00, and some Facility features such as a sauna seem to be available only on one side. After arriving I enjoyed our Room bath for so long because it was too comfortable—and ended up missing one side that should have been available until 19:30 (laugh). Meals both morning and evening gave us the impression that seasonal ingredients were carefully prepared. The proprietress also came by during dinner service. She already knew what we had talked about earlier when being shown to our Room by another staff member, which showed how closely everyone communicates behind the scenes. The Japanese-style sauce served with one of the hot dishes at dinner was incredibly delicious—we even talked as a family about whether they might sell it—but I forgot to ask because I was simply enjoying how satisfied I felt... We also went to see the Bon dance festival they told us about. Events like this have almost disappeared where we live now, so dancing and trying festival games like shooting galleries were precious experiences for our children. From arrival through seeing us off at checkout, everything was truly comfortable—thank you very much. If I had to mention anything at all: having towels stocked in advance at the large public bath would make it easier to go hands-free; and having a stirring rod for mixing hot/cold water in the Room’s indoor bath would be helpful too. We would love to stay again.

    A relaxing Onsen Accommodation!

    Nakamatsuya is one of my favorite Onsen Accommodations. Whenever I step into the entrance, seeing the cheerful staff and the proprietress smiling is truly soothing. The Room, Onsen, and meals are consistently excellent. I’d like to visit again next year around the time the cherry blossoms bloom in Bessho Onsen.

    Despite being a same-day Reservation

    That morning, I made a last-minute Reservation on a whim and jumped on the bullet train. The Shuttle Service, reception, send-off, Room, meals, Onsen, value for money—everything was just as described in the Reviews: a warm, comfortable Accommodation with nothing lacking and nothing excessive. The freshly cooked rice at breakfast was glossy and delicious, and above all it was wonderful to see how proudly and energetically the staff worked. It’s also close to Tokyo, and next time I’d like to visit during matsutake season.

    The three of us—my 8...

    The three of us—my 86-year-old father, my younger brother, and I—stayed here. When I noted during the Reservation that my father is elderly, they kindly upgraded us on the day to a Room with a private indoor bath fed by free-flowing natural hot spring water. My father was delighted that he could relax and enjoy the Onsen at his own pace. Everyone at the Ryokan, including the proprietress, was truly kind. The service was warm yet respectfully unobtrusive, which we found very pleasant. Our Room was a traditional-style Japanese-Western suite with an old farmhouse feel; it was spacious and luxurious, and we couldn’t help but be captivated by the impressive beams. We were also looking forward to the meals, and they guided us to a private dining room. The dishes were served in perfect timing to match our pace, allowing us to fully savor both the delicious food and drinks in a relaxed setting. It was a wonderful Accommodation that made us want to return again after quite some time. Thank you so much to the proprietress and all staff for your exceptional hospitality!

    Delicious Hot Spring Retreat

    The free-flowing natural Onsen indoor bath was outstanding. The generously filled, hot tub with yunohana drifting through it was a delight, and I could enjoy it anytime during my stay. The cold bath was also great. I did wish the smaller large public bath had a cold bath as well. Since it was a weekday—and perhaps because the water is quite hot—it never felt crowded, and I often had the Onsen to myself, which was very relaxing. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The meals featured seasonal flavors and were thoughtfully prepared with genuine hospitality. The Room had a charming traditional house atmosphere that matched the view of the Onsen town from the window, which I really liked. I was surprised that the in-room bath was just a standard unit bathroom. Everyone at the Accommodation was friendly, polite, and wonderfully attentive with heartfelt hospitality. Our usual Onsen Accommodation had an issue with its hot spring pumping system, so we changed our itinerary at short notice to this Onsen area and stayed here instead. We are truly grateful to have enjoyed such delicious food and wonderful Onsen—thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts. Thanks to you, we had a lovely trip, and we would love to visit again.     The landlady’s warm smile and the meals were truly soothing.

    The meals were outstanding. The A5-grade steak was so tender it could be pulled apart with chopsticks, and the sun-dried Hade-kake rice felt like a rare, almost legendary variety. From the proprietress to every staff member, everyone welcomed us with warm smiles, and we had a very comfortable stay—thank you. The Ryokan and all of Bessho Onsen were filled with flowers and had an elegant beauty. There are also many cultural treasures within walking distance, such as Kitamuki Kannon Temple and Anraku-ji Temple, home to a National Treasure, which we really enjoyed exploring. This time we traveled with my brother and his wife, and we were very satisfied. Ueda’s soba is also highly recommended.

    A wonderful Accommodation where everything is excellent

    I had the chance to visit Nagano with my husband, and based on the Reviews we chose to stay at Nakamatsuya. It was a wonderful Accommodation, just as highly rated. The meals—both dinner and breakfast—were thoughtfully prepared with great attention to ingredients and cooking methods, and everything was delicious. The free-flowing natural hot spring bath in our Room was incredibly relaxing, and I enjoyed it many times during our stay. The view from the top-floor panoramic bath was also amazing, and we were able to fully enjoy the Onsen. Starting with the proprietress, all of the staff were kind, and we felt refreshed both physically and mentally. Thank you very much! My husband and I will be back again, and I’m sure our daughter and her boyfriend will also stay with you in the future—thank you in advance for your continued hospitality.

    The free-flowing natural hot spring bath is exceptional.

    I enjoyed the Onsen to the fullest, soaking three times in the in-Room bath and twice in the large public bath (before and after the switch). Everything is free-flowing from the source, and with such excellent water quality, there’s nothing to complain about—it was truly outstanding. The Room was renovated a few years ago and was more than satisfactory. The staff, including the proprietress, were all wonderful; their service and hospitality were impeccable. Renovations have been done here and there, cleaning was thorough, and it felt clean and comfortable despite its age. Dinner and breakfast aren’t flashy, but they’re well seasoned and overall of a high standard. I will definitely be back.

    We were able to relax with delicious meals and the Onsen.

    Bessho Onsen was a wonderful place. Soon after arriving at the Accommodation, we visited Kitamuki Kannon Hall and the National Treasure Octagonal Three-Story Pagoda. With these visits, the meals at Nakamatsuya, and the Onsen, it was a trip beyond satisfaction—nothing more to ask for. We enjoyed the baths four times, including the in-room Onsen. The Room was kept very clean, and we spent a relaxing time looking out over the town through the large window. The grilled salt ayu and sirloin at dinner were impressive and a pleasant surprise. Of course there were many dishes, and the vegetables were very fresh as well. We also enjoyed some drinks. At breakfast, I ended up having two and a half bowls of rice. Everyone at the Accommodation was brisk and pleasant to deal with. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    My wife had a broken...

    My wife had a broken leg and was still wearing a brace, so we were a bit worried, but we were able to make the trip. We’re glad we chose a larger, traditional folk house-style Room instead of a standard one. We met the hostess just as described in the Reviews, and the staff and attendants provided excellent service. Both dinner and breakfast offered many dishes, all of them delicious. The morning coffee was also very good. This is a Ryokan we would like to visit again.

    On a whim, I decided...

    On a whim, I decided to visit Nagano Prefecture and made a Reservation at Ryokan Nakamatsuya. The property was even cleaner than expected, and I had a very comfortable stay. Everyone—from the front desk staff and restaurant team to the proprietress—was kind and welcoming, providing warm hospitality. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the Onsen was wonderful. If I have the chance, I would love to stay again.

    It was a family-friendly accommodation that was easy to stay in with children.

    A family trip for three with our one-year-old son. Not only did you provide the diaper pail we requested in advance, but you also offered a loan of a children’s jinbei and prepared child amenities. The front desk asked for our child’s name, and staff kindly called out to him and spoke to him while he was playing in the kids’ area and when we were at the dining venue, which made him smile nonstop. At dinner, we mistakenly arrived thinking the start time was 6:00 PM instead of 6:30 PM—thank you for accommodating us. You also softened the rice for our son, so he was able to enjoy his meal. In the kids’ area, he played with great excitement with the toys and slide. The entire building has tatami flooring and was very well cleaned, making it comfortable for both adults and children. If we have a chance to visit Bessho Onsen again, this is an Accommodation we would love to stay at again. Thank you very much for all your thoughtful care.

    A renovated Japanese-modern Room

    This was my third stay since last September. I’ve always enjoyed the seasonal touches, such as Rooms with a kotatsu beneath beautiful exposed beams, and this time I was able to relax in a Japanese-modern Room. With Western-style tatami, lighting, and a newly expanded wash area after the renovation, the Room now offers a panoramic view over Shiodaira. Many of the people I met in the bath were repeat guests—this is an Accommodation with excellent value for money. I’m happy to have an Onsen Accommodation close to home where I can always enjoy delicious meals and truly refresh.

    A welcoming Accommodation with warm hospitality

    Because our previous stay was so wonderful, this was our second visit. Once again, we enjoyed a quiet, relaxing, and comfortable stay. The bath, the Room, and the meals were all high quality and very satisfying. I have visited Onsen all over Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but the Onsen here is truly the best. Above all, the warm hospitality of the proprietress and all the staff left a lasting impression on us. It felt strangely familiar—almost as if we had known them for years. At the same time, their respectful sense of distance and attentive, thoughtful service was genuinely pleasant. The hot spring water, the food, and the people are all wonderful—this is an Accommodation you’ll want to return to again and again.

    We were completely satisfied with the hospitality, the views, the Onsen, and the cuisine.

    At check-in, we were greeted with “Welcome back,” which immediately put us at ease. All the staff addressed us by name as well, which impressed us. On the day of our stay, we visited Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. We were also told that visiting the nearby Kitamuki Kannon brings blessings in both this life and the next, and it felt like a mysterious connection. The view of Ueda City from our Room, the Onsen, and the meals were all very satisfying. It was a wonderful trip.

    Family Trip

    We stayed as a group of six: my parents, my husband, and our two sons. Since my parents are elderly, we wanted a Room where we could all stay together. The Room was clean and spacious, and all the hallways were tatami-matted; there were no slippers, but each guest was provided with socks, which was very comfortable. Breakfast and dinner were served in private dining rooms for each Room, with more than enough food and everything was delicious. The baths included an indoor bath and a small open-air bath as well, which we really enjoyed. The young proprietress was delightful too—we’d love to visit again!

    We are very satisfied!

    We had a wonderfully relaxing stay from the 3:00 PM check-in until checkout the next day. Everyone on the Ryokan staff was very kind and welcomed us warmly. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and more than we could finish, but it felt wasteful to leave any, so we did our best and ate almost everything. The Onsen water was excellent, and thanks to it, my child’s cold and my lower back pain improved a lot. After checkout, we went around to different public baths, and it was a big help that they not only stored our luggage but also drove us there. Thanks to the outstanding hospitality of the proprietress and all the staff, it became a truly memorable trip.

    Looking for a nearby Onsen when you visit Ueda for soba? Bessho Onsen is quiet and surrounded by nature, with many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Are there any other Onsen like this? We stayed at Nakamatsuya near Kitamuki Kannon. Even though it was before 3:00 p.m., we were shown to our Room, which had a wonderful view of the Kannon statue and the Shioda Plain. In the distance we could see Mt. Asama and Shiga Kogen, and at night the city lights were beautiful. The bath was also an open-air rooftop view bath—neither too hot nor too lukewarm—and warmed us through. Dinner started with a medicinal carrot aperitif and soup, followed by an outstanding Shinshu beef steak. Breakfast was also very satisfying. What impressed us most was the staff’s smiles—especially the dining service staff, the lobby coffee service staff, and those who saw us off. The proprietress’s smile was always there as well. Thank you very much—your complexion looked radiant (though I did gain a little weight).

    The meals were absolutely delicious.

    This was my first stay in Bessho Onsen. “Shinshu’s Kamakura” was quiet and a wonderful place for a stroll. Thank you to the proprietress and all the staff for your warm hospitality and thoughtful care. Every dish was carefully prepared and truly delicious. I was amazed by the large beams in the Room. For the kotatsu floor chair, I think a chair-style seat might be easier on the legs, and if the paper coffee cups in the lounge had lids, it would be possible to take them back to the Room. This is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again in a different season.

    Despite the last-minute Reservation,

    Despite making a last-minute Reservation on the day, we were truly impressed that the Accommodation called in advance to confirm details and carefully accommodated our allergy needs. Upon arrival, the proprietress personally welcomed us, asked our child’s name, and continued to address them by name throughout our stay—such warm hospitality that we will never forget. The beautiful mountain views of Shinshu from the sauna were exceptional, allowing us to enjoy a luxurious escape from everyday life. Both dinner and breakfast were wonderfully lavish, and we also appreciated the partitions designed so guests wouldn’t make eye contact with others, ensuring privacy was well protected. With many Ryokan in the area closing down, we sincerely hope this Accommodation—offering such outstanding hospitality—will continue for many years to come. We would love to visit again.

    It was a truly wonde...

    It was a truly wonderful Ryokan. From the Room, we enjoyed views of Shiodadaira and Ueda City, and we were completely satisfied with everything—the rooftop Onsen and the meals were especially excellent. Diagonally across the street was an Onsen said to have been used by Yukimura Sanada and Lady Go, making this a lovely Onsen Accommodation filled with historical romance.
