A First-Time Experience Staying at Our Accommodation
Although it rained on the day of our stay, we were greeted upon arrival at the Ryokan, but there were not enough umbrellas prepared for our group, which gave us a bad feeling from the start. At dinner, the timing of serving the dishes was poor—several items came out in quick succession, then there were long gaps—so it did not feel like they were being served with attention to our pace. At breakfast, when we asked for an extra serving of rice, there was no staff member on the floor and we ended up going to the kitchen ourselves; this was something we have never experienced at any Accommodation before. The bath area had inconsistent amenities, and even in the Room there were no tissues provided. Overall, it made us question their standards as a service business.

Impressions of Yamagatakan
My family and I have stayed at Yamagatakan many times, and we never get tired of it. The meals are plentiful, the futons in the guest Room are fluffy and comfortable, the warm green tea in the Room is delicious, and the Onsen is nicely hot and very relaxing. We also bought a cute Mameshiba plush as a souvenir—it’s adorable. My dad, my mom, and I all love Yamagatakan, and we’d like to visit again.

A relaxing, soothing accommodation.
I have stayed here several times, and I leave satisfied every time. The Onsen is a free-flowing natural hot spring with alkaline simple spring water. Relax and unwind, and be sure to try the riverside open-air bath at least once to truly experience nature. The meals are also very delicious, including Koshu beef, and the Ryokan has a comforting Showa-retro atmosphere throughout.

The meals are consistently delicious.
Both dinner and breakfast were more delicious than expected. The Koshu beef and yamame trout at dinner were especially outstanding, and the overall seasoning was excellent. The Facility and guest rooms are old due to the age of the building, which is understandable, but I would have liked better amenities to make up for it. As for the baths, two of them were good except for the men’s bath at night.

Amazed by the abundant hot spring water supply
I was truly amazed by the sheer volume of water gushing up! The Onsen quality was just as highly praised—wonderful, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It would have been even better if there had been a Facility where you could drink cold water after your bath.

The hot spring water in the in-room open-air bath is exceptional.
I truly believe the bath water is the best in Japan—absolutely wonderful. The chawanmushi served at dinner was prepared a bit cool, and we would have preferred it warm, especially for older guests. Other than that, everything was excellent.

I was completely refreshed in both body and mind by the wonderful Onsen!
I chose this Accommodation because I was drawn to the phrase “100% free-flowing natural hot spring,” and it truly lived up to the promise—it was a wonderful place to stay. The Onsen had only a mild mineral scent, yet the water felt silky and very pleasant. Because it’s on the cooler side, you can soak slowly without getting overheated, which is another great point. Most impressive of all, even the shower water was Onsen water—remarkable. The spring yield must be abundant. I’ve stayed at many hot springs over the years, but in terms of water quality, views, and Facility offerings, I genuinely think this is an outstanding Onsen. If I had to mention one thing, it would be helpful if drinking water were available in the resting area for those times when you end up soaking a bit too long. The Facility has the atmosphere of a traditional Ryokan, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel somewhat old-fashioned—but rather than being a negative, I appreciated how they value what’s old while making up for any shortcomings with warm hospitality and service. The Room was thoroughly cleaned and felt very fresh; even the tatami mats were comfortable. The generous meals made with local ingredients were also delicious. Despite being in a landlocked prefecture, the sashimi was excellent—a pleasant surprise. My only regret is that there was so much food that I couldn’t finish everything. Finally, thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality during our stay. We visited to celebrate my father’s birthday; when I mentioned this at the time of Reservation, we received a lovely extra service at dinner on the day. Thanks as well for upgrading our Room—we were able to relax comfortably in a spacious setting. We were completely satisfied with everything—the Onsen, meals, and hospitality—and would love to visit again.

This place is wonderful.
My spouse and I stayed here to celebrate our 60th birthdays, and even though she usually doesn’t say things like this, she was truly moved and said, “So this is what real free-flowing natural hot spring water is!” I also made our son come along for the first time in four years, and it seems he was able to refresh and unwind quite a bit. Dinner was delicious as expected, so I won’t dwell on it—but breakfast is outstanding. You won’t find the usual staples like grilled salmon, natto, or Onsen eggs. Instead, they focus on local ingredients. It’s wonderful that you can also choose Onsen rice porridge. This is a prestigious Onsen Accommodation where His Majesty the Emperor once stayed as a child. We’ll live long and come back again.

The hot water is excellent.
The Facility is old, but it has been kept clean and there were no issues at all. What really stands out about this Accommodation is the hot spring water. The water is amazing. The Onsen said to have been developed by Takeda Shingen leaves your skin feeling moisturized. Even the showers use Onsen water, which was a pleasant surprise. The meals were delicious as well. I will definitely come again.

Highly satisfying
My wife and I stayed here to fully enjoy the Onsen. We were completely satisfied with everything—the Onsen, the meals, and the staff’s hospitality. As a Hotel with a long history and tradition, it also had a wonderfully dignified atmosphere.

I stayed in the Meigetsu Room.
I stayed in the Meigetsu Room. Although the hot spring water should be of the same quality, the open-air bath in the Room felt more slippery on my skin compared to the large public bath. The building/Room feels a bit old, but the service was excellent. The meals were very delicious. I was fully satisfied.

The Onsen was excellent.
This time, we booked the most affordable Room. The hot spring bath with free-flowing source water was excellent, and for the price, the meals were delicious and the service was very attentive. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again. Amazing value for money.

Second stay, following last month.
Having been very satisfied with our stay last month, this was our second visit. We traveled as a family with two young children, and you kindly arranged a semi-private dining area, allowing us to enjoy both breakfast and dinner at a relaxed pace. In addition, the 10-tatami Japanese-style Room we had reserved was prepared as an even larger Room, and the check-in information discreetly noted that it had been “upgraded,” for which we are truly grateful. We were comforted by the warm hospitality of all the staff and the wonderful hot spring water. Thank you very much for your care. We look forward to staying with you again.

Relax and indulge in Onsen.
This is my second stay. The silky smooth onsen with natural hot spring water was perfect, even in winter with a temperature of around 42°C, allowing for a relaxing long soak. The ryokan's accommodating and flexible service is also commendable. With the shuttle service from the station, they depart as soon as all reserved guests are gathered. Even if you arrive well before the 3 PM check-in time, they allow you to access your room and enjoy the onsen. This level of hospitality is rare compared to other accommodations I've stayed at. This time, our room was upgraded, which made my family very happy. The facility has a nostalgic Showa-era charm; while brighter hallways would be nice, it doesn't affect the comfort of your stay. It's a great place to unwind in the onsen and relax fully. I look forward to visiting again during another beautiful season.

Natural hot spring flow
The hot spring was amazing. My whole family wants to come back again. All the staff were friendly and pleasant. The meals were delicious, and the futons were very comfortable. Thank you for this wonderful experience. We look forward to staying with you again!

The hot water pot in the Room has rust...
A few years ago, we stayed here with a baby, and this time we stayed as three families, including children and babies. The staff accommodated us by arranging for us to dine together in the same room. On the second night, when I opened the kettle in the room to add hot water, it was covered with what appeared to be red rust. The rust was floating visibly in the water. We had used this water to make milk for our baby the previous day... I pointed it out and they replaced the kettle, but their response was simply "Alright, we'll replace it," without much concern. While it may not have been harmful to health, seeing floating rust at that level left a very unpleasant impression. It made me question whether they even changed the water from previous guests or if other items were properly maintained. Additionally, the hallway was extremely cold. It’s disappointing because both the Onsen and meals were excellent otherwise.

Onsen
The Onsen suited me perfectly. The food was also delicious. The open-air bath provided an experience reminiscent of a Sengoku warlord.

It was the perfect environment.
It was a day-use visit, but both the lunch and the onsen were very satisfying. Since it was a weekday, I could relax and enjoy soaking in the bath at my own pace. I would like to stay at the accommodation next time.

A hidden healing spot: your second visit this year, and sixth in total!
Natural hot spring water flows freely. Even from the shower, warm water gushes abundantly. With the flowing water, fatigue and weariness seem to wash away. The sky viewed from the open-air bath is a clear blue, the gentle breeze feels pleasant, and the autumn mountains with their vibrant foliage are breathtakingly beautiful. The rhythmic sound of flowing water is both powerful and soothing, cleansing both body and mind with every passing second. Meals feature seasonal delicacies at their finest. During this season, dishes like marinated turnips, mushrooms, and locally caught river fish grilled with salt are exceptionally delicious. While Koshu beef is a highlight for many guests, even Koshu chicken would be delightful for those who prefer lighter flavors—each dish offers nourishment that warms you from within. Yamanashi's pride, Rihoku rice (梨北米), is fluffy and glistening; paired with miso soup and pickles, it’s so good you'll want multiple servings. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. Thank you always for your kind patronage!

Is it currently under renovation?
I have stayed at Yamagatakan about 10 times over the past 30 years, totaling around 13 nights. It is the closest accommodation with excellent onsen from my home, so I have used it frequently. My last stay was about 5-6 years ago. This time, as I expected to arrive late (though I ended up arriving earlier than planned), I opted for a no meals included plan. The onsen was as wonderful as ever and remains in my personal top five favorites. However, I strongly felt the aging of the facility. If it were a wooden building, its age might add to its charm, but with a reinforced concrete structure (or steel?), it doesn't feel that way—just my personal impression though. Being close to Tokyo and having great onsen may still attract guests even if it's deteriorating but minimally maintained... On the morning after my stay, despite a forecasted low temperature of 3-4°C (locals later suggested it might have been even colder), the room's air conditioning at maximum couldn't keep me warm enough. When mentioning this during checkout at the front desk, they seemed surprised—so perhaps it's just me being sensitive to cold—but for those who are similarly sensitive, additional heating equipment would be necessary. If renovated for greater comfort in the future, I'd love to visit again; otherwise, honestly speaking, there likely won't be a next time for me.

The meals, both dinn...
The meals, both dinner and breakfast, are very delicious and made with high-quality ingredients, offering great value for money. The Onsen's water quality is excellent and seems suitable even for those with sensitive skin. However, the Room amenities are lacking, there are no welcome drinks or complimentary beverages, and the hospitality from the staff was somewhat underwhelming. Given how exceptional the meals and Onsen were, this contrast was noticeable.

Seeking a solo trip with natural hot spring baths
A source-flowing Onsen accommodation that welcomes solo travelers is truly appreciated. The high alkaline simple hot spring with high temperature is an especially delightful water quality. Additionally, there are two large baths (four including the outdoor baths), which alternate by time, allowing guests to enjoy various atmospheres, including the famous rock bath. The rock bath is divided into three tubs, where two different sources flow into separate tubs and merge together, creating a temperature difference. Alternating between these baths is highly recommended. Next time, I would like to stay for a multiple night stay and fully enjoy the 24-hour bathing (rock bath available from sunrise to sunset for safety). Not only the Onsen but also the staff were wonderful, and I enjoyed delicious meals paired with Koshu wine. Thank you very much!

Abundant hot spring water and natural flow baths ensure satisfaction.
The staff provided very pleasant service. I stayed for the natural hot spring bath, and it exceeded my expectations. The autumn leaves viewed from the open-air bath were beautiful. However, the hallways felt a bit cold due to relying on stoves for heating.

Enjoy the autumn leaves, streams, and waterfalls of Nishizawa Gorge.
It was my first visit to Nishizawa Gorge, and I was amazed by the beautiful autumn leaves, the powerful river flow, and numerous waterfalls. Online information mentioned a 10km trail taking about 4 hours, but due to lack of exercise and light rain, it took me 4 hours and 30 minutes. The gorge was very quiet with only about ten people encountered along the way. Concerned about bear safety, I quickly purchased bear spray and walked for four and a half hours while ringing a bear bell. In the evening, I arrived at Yamagatakan exhausted. This charming accommodation is run by descendants of Yamagata Masakage, one of Takeda's Twenty-Four Generals. I was able to relax here thanks to their warm hospitality. Special thanks to the staff who assisted me during my stay—thank you very much!

Be inspired by the autumn leaves.
We stayed in a room with an open-air bath. The autumn leaves were at their peak and absolutely beautiful. Although it was a large accommodation with many rooms, meals were served in private dining spaces, allowing us to relax. The number of dishes was just right for us, and the meat dishes were exceptionally delicious. We couldn't hear any noise from other guests, and we enjoyed soaking in the onsen in our room while admiring the autumn foliage outside. The room was clean and comfortable. Thank you to all the staff for taking care of us!

Natural hot spring with no added water or heating
Joined my daughter, who lives alone in Yokohama after moving from Kansai, and visited Kawara Onsen, less than an hour from Hachioji. Although it was a bit early for autumn leaves, the mountains were slightly colored, and we could see snow-capped Mt. Fuji from the car window on our way here. The weather was perfect. We usually visit onsens in Tohoku or Hakone, but this was our first time in Yamanashi Prefecture. We were deeply impressed by this amazing onsen. The amount of hot spring water is incredible—the large public bath overflows with water that streams into the washing area, creating a luxurious experience. It reminded us of the abundant hot springs at Kanbayashi Hotel—truly surprising! Moreover, with a pH level above 9 and even showers using natural spring water, it’s exceptional. The accommodation is run by the 13th-generation owner of Yamagataya and offers an old yet wonderful atmosphere. The meals are delicious; staff members are warm and genuine; rooms are spacious and clean. Our room's private open-air bath features a ceramic tub watched over by Fuesuki Genzaburo’s statue—it’s fed directly by natural spring water and feels fantastic. From Yamagatakan, there are also various sightseeing courses accessible via taxi. Next time we stay here, we plan to stay for two nights to enjoy these tours as well. Thank you so much for allowing us to spend such enjoyable moments together with my daughters!

A Relaxing Accommodation
I have visited several times, and each visit is truly rejuvenating. The exceptional quality of the hot springs and the satisfying meals provide relaxation for both body and mind. The staff's sincere and pleasant service adds to the overall experience. This time, I brought along my parent who is over 90 years old, and they were delighted. I look forward to visiting again.

Elderly Couple's Hidden Hot Spring Retreat
A hidden gem of an Onsen. The facility and room are not new but well-maintained. My plan did not include a private bath in the room, but it was no issue. The Onsen was excellent. As expected from something developed by Takeda's vassal, Masakage Yamagata. There was even Masakage's armor on display. The rock bath had the soothing sound of the river, clean water, and a charming atmosphere—truly satisfying. The water temperature was perfect for relaxing, and despite being pH 9., it felt surprisingly smooth. Meals were not buffet-style but thoughtfully prepared with subtle touches that were satisfying for our age group. The Koshu beef sukiyaki and grilled yamame trout were delicious. It’s not flashy but offers a relaxing stay at a reasonable price for an Onsen accommodation where my wife and I agreed we’d like to return someday. Nearby is a waterfall free from tourists—a perfect spot when you’re tired of crowds—but perhaps less suitable for families with children. Thank you for your hospitality!
