It was a bit disappointing.
I’d been interested in this Accommodation for several years and was really looking forward to staying here. As mentioned in everyone’s Reviews, the Onsen water quality is truly outstanding. I fully enjoyed the benefits of the free-flowing natural spring. The private bath was also excellent in both temperature and water quality—an Onsen you can stay in forever. The hospitality and service were great, including pick-up and drop-off, and all staff were wonderful. One disappointing point was dinner: the tofu kaiseki course. There was no main dish, and overall it felt a bit lacking and not very memorable. As a family, we felt the breakfast buffet was better. As for the Room, it overlooked Lake Akaya and we were very satisfied with the view. However, there was dust under the table and some peeling wallpaper. With just a little more attention to these details, it would have been an even more satisfying Room. Overall there is some age-related wear, but it felt clean. In conclusion, this was a wonderful Accommodation where you can truly enjoy the water quality of Sarugakyo Onsen. If you’re looking for great Onsen water quality, I definitely recommend it. Thank you for taking care of us.

The Onsen water quality was excellent.
Thank you for having my wife and me for one night the other day. We were very satisfied—the Onsen water quality and the tofu dishes were delicious! The only thing we noticed was that there was only one Room key, so we had to be mindful about when to leave the bath. If possible, it would be great to have an additional key.

Family Trip
This was my second stay here. As with my previous visit, the two older gentlemen who greeted us were very pleasant, and their warm welcome made us feel truly appreciated—excellent hospitality. Above all, I think Sarugakyo Hotel’s service is outstanding. There wasn’t a single staff member who made me feel uncomfortable. The person who assisted us during meals was from Nepal; perhaps they are still getting used to the work, but their sincerity really came through and I never felt uneasy at all. I ordered oolong tea, but when they repeated the order they said orange juice—so I corrected it, yet what arrived was orange juice (laugh). That was completely acceptable. It was delicious! The next morning, they greeted me with “Thank you for yesterday,” which made me happy. Thank you as well. Both dinner and breakfast were very tasty and generously portioned—we were completely satisfied. The Onsen was kept extremely clean and felt wonderful. Thanks to everyone at the Hotel, we had a very comfortable stay. We also really enjoyed playing table tennis. We will definitely come back again.

The tofu kaiseki meal is only available on the first day.
Over time, things inevitably change. The proprietress and staff were very attentive. I was able to fully enjoy the Onsen. However, I was very disappointed by the difference between the first night’s meal and the meal two days later, so I skipped dinner on the second night and breakfast at check-out. The second night’s dishes felt completely different from the first, and I couldn’t understand what they were trying to convey. For example, their signature smoked tofu would still be appreciated even if served on consecutive nights. As for the sashimi, tuna and sweet shrimp being repeated from the previous day should have been changed. Items like agedashi tofu are also not something I want to eat. The fact that there was no menu for the second night’s meal is telling—clear evidence they are not considering a Multiple Night Stay. If you stay here, I recommend avoiding a Multiple Night Stay. Disappointing.

The building is old, but the interior is clean.
It was an overnight stay with breakfast only, no dinner. The staff who welcomed us at the entrance were very pleasant. As soon as we arrived, it felt like the heating wasn’t on. You could order beer and other drinks in the lounge, but it was a bit chilly, so we didn’t really feel like staying. We carried our own luggage to the Room and went in. The air conditioner in the Room had been turned off, so it took a while to warm up. I wish it had been turned on in advance. Overall, it left us with the impression that it was cold. The bath is a bit of a walk, but the water was great and the temperature was just right, so we were satisfied. It would have been even better if there had been something like a lint roller in the changing area to pick up hair. Breakfast was excellent—their signature tofu and ganmodoki were delicious, and so was the rice. The soy milk bread was also very good. We were very satisfied with breakfast.

The room with a lake...
The room with a lake view had a great scenery! The large public bath was also nice and spacious! However, to get to the public bath from the room, you either go through a cold underground passage or outside. Additionally, there is some distance between the indoor bath and the open-air bath, so the ground might freeze in winter, making it feel quite cold. Meals were on the lighter side (perhaps because tofu was the main dish and not very filling?). Also, about the rice...

The hot spring was excellent.
The Onsen was colorless, clear, and very pleasant to use. It was cold on the way to the bath, but I understand it must be challenging to heat everything. The interior of the facility feels a bit old, but it can be seen as charming and full of character.

From welcome to farewell
The staff's hospitality was the best compared to any other accommodation I have visited. The room faced the mountain side, but the view of Akaya Lake from the lobby was indescribably beautiful. Next time, I would like to stay in a room with a view of Akaya Lake. The open-air bath made me feel as if I were surrounded by nature and was very relaxing. Both breakfast and dinner were satisfying meals. The soy milk bread was soft and delicious, so I made a reservation to buy freshly baked bread in the morning and brought it home. I definitely want to visit again!

Enjoy Tofu to the Fullest
After arriving, I heard from someone at the Onsen that the meals were excellent and they were revisiting, so I had high expectations. The tofu-inspired dinner and the breakfast buffet were both delicious. The Onsen water was clear, odorless, and very pleasant. You can even drink it, which was good for my stomach. One improvement I'd suggest is enhancing the pathway to the Onsen.

First Visit to Sarugakyo Onsen
This was my first visit to Sarugakyo Onsen. The accommodation had a hinoki bath onsen in the room, and while the water was very nice, I wish it had been free-flowing. The meals were satisfying, and the tofu dishes were delicious!

Pleasant hospitality
From arrival to departure, the staff's warm smiles made for an enjoyable stay. The room was clean, but due to its age, there was a slight musty smell. Dinner was a bit underwhelming but reasonable for the accommodation fee. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The bath facilities were great, with a spacious open-air bath and comfortable indoor baths. It would have been even better if there were handrails for entering the open-air bath.

It offers a calm and sophisticated atmosphere for adults.
Craving tofu dishes and seeking a cool retreat, I stayed at this ryokan. This traditional accommodation is located overlooking Akaya Lake, and the view from the room was a beautiful contrast of greenery and the lake, offering a refreshing atmosphere. The meals were full of natural flavors, each dish carefully prepared. They revived my appetite, which had been worn out by the summer heat. The miso soup and tofu served at breakfast were deeply comforting and truly felt special. The bath is located in an annex. It was quite spacious with multiple tubs of varying temperatures to enjoy. While soaking in the open-air bath, I could hear cicadas singing—a reminder of the season—and enjoyed a stunning view of Akaya Lake. As expected from an established ryokan, there were plenty of staff members who demonstrated their dedication through thoughtful service throughout my stay. The calm atmosphere that appeals to adults was particularly delightful. Moreover, the accommodation fee was very reasonable—it almost made me feel guilty!

Onsen is amazing!
The Onsen, cuisine, and views from the room and restaurant were excellent, and I was very satisfied. If possible, a welcome drink or coffee service in the room would have been appreciated. Thank you very much.

Charming Onsen Ryokan
The Ryokan had an old-fashioned charm, with its historical and atmospheric facilities. The large public bath and open-air bath were excellent. Additionally, the meals, both breakfast and dinner, were very delicious. However, it was disappointing to notice some shortcomings in the room cleaning. Considering the nature-rich location, it might be inevitable to some extent, but we would appreciate measures such as replacing light covers or switching to LED lights and conducting daily cleaning inspections for pest control. Overall, it was a Ryokan I would like to visit again. Thank you for your hospitality.

Spring arrives about two weeks later.
Visited on Greenery Day. The Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms were nearing the end of their season, while the double-flowered cherry blossoms were in full bloom. I was looking forward to enjoying the wisteria trellis at the open-air bath, but it was still in bud, making it feel like spring arrives about two weeks later here compared to lower altitudes. The Onsen had a gentle water quality, and the open-air bath offered both "hot" and "lukewarm" options, allowing guests to soak in their preferred temperature—absolutely wonderful! As for the meals, true to the name of this accommodation, it featured a full-course tofu menu. The sesame tofu and silken tofu with pork shabu-shabu were particularly delicious. My mother especially enjoyed the soy milk ice cream dessert; its subtle saltiness provided a refreshing aftertaste she loved.

The building has a ruin-like appearance.
The exterior was disappointing at first glance. Upon checking, it turned out to be 53 years old. The iron bars on the windows were rusted and decayed. The room had two beds with a lake view and tatami flooring, but the furniture edges were worn, and the wallpaper, which seemed to have been replaced, was stained. The open-air bath had large stones scattered around, making it very unsafe for walking. There were no support bars, so it felt like slipping and getting injured was a real risk. Avoid going there in the dark. The tofu kaiseki meal I was looking forward to seemed made with cost-cutting ingredients, leaving me wondering what this Hotel's main appeal is. Honestly, staying at home would have been more relaxing than this experience.

The open-air bath in the snow is superb.
A historic Ryokan, striving to overcome challenging times, made me want to support it. Onsen: The charm of the open-air bath with a view of the snow (February), and the naturally formed "rock surface at the bottom of the open-air bath shining in tenmoku color (shikon)" had a mysterious glow.

A property in Sarugakyo that you would want to visit again
It was my first time at Sarugakyo Onsen. True to the name of the property known for its tofu, the tofu kaiseki dinner was unpretentious and creative, with just the right amount and very delicious. The tofu at the breakfast buffet was so delicious that it changed my concept of "tofu." The room was comfortably furnished, and the view of the snowy Akaya Lake from the window was superb. And of course, the onsen water was wonderful. The quality of the spring made me want to soak forever, and even the drinking water was delicious. Next time, I would like to visit for a more leisurely multiple night stay. The staff's hospitality was also pleasant. With the heavy snowfall, I imagine the snow removal work was tough. Thank you very much for taking care of us.

I stayed at the prop...
I stayed at the property during the New Year. The first thing that comes to mind is that every place other than the room I stayed in was extremely cold!! The front desk, corridors, dining area, and the onsen changing room were too cold, possibly due to poor heating. It was so cold that I even discussed it with other guests. It's very disappointing, especially since the onsen and the staff's service were good. As for the meals, breakfast was better. Dinner was disappointing.

I intended to welcome the New Year gracefully, but...
It was my third stay on December 31st. It was a special room, but the room had a rather tired feeling. What added to the disappointment was that a stick from a chocolate ice cream, presumably eaten by the previous guest, was found on the tatami mat. Moreover, there were many hairs and small hard pieces of trash on the carpet of the sunroom, and the large TV was covered with small children's handprints... It felt as if the room hadn't been cleaned at all rather than just not being thoroughly cleaned. As a result, everything felt dirty, and I couldn't relax at all. The carpet of the massage chair was quite old, the mattress felt outdated, and the place called a stone garden was just a neglected balcony. The 100% natural onsen cypress bath was disappointing as it couldn't retain heat and had to be filled manually each time. When I reported the trash issue in the room to the front desk, they immediately took care of it. The next morning at the buffet venue, a woman who seemed to be the proprietress approached me, saying that being busy was no excuse and apologized. However, when I saw her again at checkout, she acted as if she didn't see me, which left a bad impression. I don't think I will visit again.

You can enjoy the changing seasons.
The room had large windows with a great view of the lake, allowing us to witness the autumn leaves changing, which was fantastic. The onsen was clean with plenty of water, but perhaps the women's amenities could be improved for better reception. The maintained building is old but not bad. However, the walls, floors, and ceilings seem thin, making the internal sounds quite audible, which raises concerns for stays during peak season. The meals focus on healthy options like tofu, but the taste is not particularly noteworthy. The reception and service staff were polite and seemed well-trained. Thank you very much.

I enjoyed the spacious open-air bath.
The staff's customer service was courteous, and I was well taken care of. The spacious open-air bath had both lukewarm and hot water, which I enjoyed alternately, leading to a long soak. Additionally, the soft floor of the indoor bath was a first-time experience for me.

The open-air bath is pleasant.
The large open-air bath was nice. The Ryokan has an old-fashioned feel, but all the staff were friendly and had pleasant smiles. However, at the restaurant, the overseas staff kept coming to clear the dishes, and even if there was still food left, they repeatedly asked if they could take them away, which felt rushed and wasn't good. Also, I chose this Ryokan because I wanted to eat yuba, but I was disappointed that I couldn't eat much because the fuel ran out and they said they couldn't add more. I wish they would either inform us to scoop the yuba before the fuel runs out or put a notice about it.

I was able to relax.
There is a bit of a distance to the large public bath, but everything else was very satisfying. I hope the shop will be a bit larger and more well-stocked. Next time, I will reserve a room with an onsen.

You can enjoy Onsen and tofu dishes.
We stayed for one night with our family from the day before the three-day weekend in September. It was nice to have a shuttle service from the nearest station. The highlight is definitely the onsen. The onsen water was very soft and pleasant. Also, since there were few guests, we were able to enjoy the onsen in the large bath luxuriously, as if it were a private bath. Another recommendation is the dinner. Starting with yuba, we enjoyed various tofu dishes up to the final dessert, and there were so many dishes that we thought we couldn't finish them halfway through. We were very satisfied. There seemed to be a small number of employees (especially the men were not very friendly), and there was no excessive service, but I think this is a recommended property for those who purely want to enjoy the onsen and dinner.
