    I had pretty high expectations.

The staff were very courteous. Because I had high expectations for my stay, there were a few disappointing points. These days, Hotels often have a stylish fragrance throughout the building, but when I entered this Ryokan it had an unpleasant smell (I’m not sure what it was). Our Room was a suite with an open-air bath, and we were able to relax. As mentioned in another Review, although the toilet area is spacious, the toilet itself feels cramped because the bidet control panel and toilet paper holder are too close to the seat. The Onsen water in the open-air bath felt silky, and the temperature was excellent. However, because the water is slippery and flows from the tub onto the stone floor, I slipped when getting out of the bath and fell on my backside. My heel hurt a little, but I wasn’t injured. The shower water pressure is weak, so rinsing takes time. The hair dryer also has relatively weak airflow compared with current models. Also, although I believe housekeeping had been done, right after entering I found a long strand of hair curled up on the floor (I have short hair), which made me uncomfortable, so I asked for another cleaning. That said, we could watch fireworks up close at night and it really lifted our spirits. The bed was comfortable. As for dinner: several items in the course appetizer tasted like edamame across the board. The semi-private dining area was nice, but there was no air conditioning so it was hot; once we lit the small hot pot it became even hotter, and even after asking them to lower the temperature we ended up sweating heavily—like being in a sauna. Breakfast also didn’t meet expectations; while a pickles buffet is fine in theory, you can’t eat only salty pickles first thing in the morning. What stood out most was rice with raw egg (tamago kake gohan). It was my first time seeing that as part of a Ryokan breakfast—it felt like a quick option rather than something special. In the morning I prefer a well-balanced yet elegant meal, so I would hope for more carefully prepared dishes such as rolled omelet (dashimaki tamago). Overall, it didn’t feel like an elegant stay worthy of booking a suite Room. Still, I would like to visit Suwa again in summer."""

    Loungewear

I usually wear an XL, so it was disappointing that the in-room loungewear was only available up to size L. The staff’s hospitality and the food were excellent.

This is my regular Accommodation—I’ve stayed here nearly 20 times, but…

First, I would like to state clearly that Shinyu is a beloved, familiar Accommodation where I have stayed about twice a year for the past 10 years. However, this time I was assigned to Room 222 and was shocked to find a cockroach in the Room. I stay at Accommodations almost every month both in Japan and overseas, including humid Southeast Asia, but this was my first such experience. It appeared close to midnight after my bath, so I couldn’t request a Room change (and I was told it was nearly fully booked), and I spent the night unable to relax until morning. As a temporary measure, I trapped it by covering it with a teacup, then eliminated it just before checkout in the morning and explained what happened at the front desk. As an apology, you kindly comped drinks from the previous night’s dinner, but it was completely unexpected to encounter such a stressful incident at an Onsen where I came to unwind. In addition, the boiler noise echoed at regular intervals and made it hard to settle down. In the private bath with free-flowing hot spring water directly from the source, the handle on the door leading from the bathing area to the shower room was covered in mold, making me hesitant to touch it. The decorative Room is cute, but I would like you to ensure more thorough cleaning. On a positive note, one of the male staff members in the dining area was very kind—he shared salt tablets (which he said were kept in their office) with my mother when she started feeling unwell from heat exhaustion. His thoughtfulness left a lasting impression on me.

As expected of you, my best friend.

It was my first stay in a while—and my first time visiting in summer—but this was a wonderful Accommodation, especially the Onsen, the meals, and visiting all four Suwa Taisha shrines. The Room differed slightly from the photos shown, which was disappointing; however, it is an Accommodation I would like to book again next time by making an early Reservation so I can secure a Room with a front-facing view of Lake Suwa.

With the reservation you made at that time!!

I went out planning just a day trip, but while trekking at Kurumayama I thought it might be nice to stay overnight at an Onsen and head home slowly the next day, so I made a Reservation around noon that same day. I had reserved a lakeside Japanese-style Room, but they upgraded me to a top-floor Room with an open-air bath. Watching the sun set over Lake Suwa from the bath in my Room, I was able to soothe my trekking fatigue and ended up having an unexpectedly wonderful time. The staff service and the meals were both very satisfying. This is a Ryokan that makes you want to stay again.

    A comfortable Accommodation for adults.

This was my first trip to Suwa, and I stayed here for two nights. I also enjoyed the original guided tour visiting all four Suwa Taisha shrines. The meal portions were just right, and everything was delicious all the way through dessert. I especially liked the breakfast pickle buffet—I was happy to find a few favorites. The Kutani ware tableware was beautiful and a pleasure to look at as well. The small pillow—or perhaps more like a small cushion—on the bed was incredibly comfortable; if it had been sold in the gift shop, I would have bought one without hesitation.

    Very satisfied

After a memorial service in Ishioka City, Ibaraki, it would have been tough to drive straight back home to Kobe, so I looked for an Accommodation with an Onsen about 3–4 hours away and found the highly rated “Shinyu.” In fact, the place was very clean, and the staff were kind and courteous—well deserving of its great reviews. The meals were also excellent. I’d love to stay again if I have the chance. I’m glad we were able to visit four companies after check-out.

    The Suwa Taisha Shri...

The Suwa Taisha Shrine tour was wonderful! Since it was free, I thought it would just be a bus ride, but the driver provided thorough guidance not only on the bus but also at the sites. The food was all delicious and truly enjoyable. Although the souvenir shop wasn’t very large, it had an excellent selection of items. All the staff served us with smiles, and we were able to spend our stay very comfortably. Thank you very much.

    Wonderful hospitality.

I stayed for one night to visit Suwa Shrine. It’s not a large Accommodation, but all the staff were very pleasant, and I felt it was an Accommodation with attentive care. The building filled with the scent of their original incense, the bath (the quince-infused water is a must—delicious!), and meals served in a private room—everything made for a truly satisfying trip. In particular, the Suwa Shrine tour was so substantial it hardly felt like it could be free, and I’m deeply grateful to the driver-guide. Thank you very much. I’d love to stay again.

A Wonderful Accommodation with Exceptional Hospitality

From the initial phone support before our stay, and even after we arrived, every staff member greeted us with a wonderful smile—it was a truly comfortable two days. We were grateful for the Shuttle Service for the four-company tour, and we were also happy to have a guide as well! Thanks to you, I learned a bit more (lol). This trip was with friends, and it became a very memorable journey—we all said on the way home, “We want to come back again!” Next time, I’d like to stay at your sister property too. Thank you very much!

    Traveling with My Parents

We planned a family trip with my parents and wanted to visit an Onsen, so for my elderly parents I looked for an Accommodation with only a small number of Rooms and a Room with in-room dining and an in-room bath, and found this place. We stayed in the top-floor suite on the 7th floor. The view from the Room was wonderful, with a full view of Lake Suwa, and it was very spacious. We were able to relax at our leisure in the private bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water. Meals were not served in the Room; instead, we dined in a private room on the first floor, but we could hear voices from the neighboring room. When booking, I mentioned that my mother’s birthday and mine were close together, and they served us an extra dessert at the end of the meal separate from the course. I was very happy about that. One disappointing point was that while the incense scent in the Room was somewhat strong, I noticed an unpleasant odor from the toilet each time. I hope this will be improved. Overall, we were very satisfied for three people.

    Tatsuno Town Firefly Festival

We chose this property because it offered a Shuttle Service to the Hotaru Festival venue. The entire building had a pleasant incense fragrance, and our Room was wonderful and very spacious (30 tatami mats). We stayed as a family, but perhaps because we eat a lot, dinner felt slightly insufficient. At an Onsen Ryokan, we usually expect a full set meal including sashimi, simmered dishes, grilled items, fried items, steamed dishes, etc., so the lack of grilled and fried dishes made it feel less filling. Also, although there was a menu provided, the contents did not match exactly—we noticed one duck dish listed that was not actually served. All Hotel staff were kind, polite, and welcoming with smiles—from guiding cars to the front desk and the dining area. It became a great memory for us.

The welcome and send-off in the parking lot are excellent.

I visited on a weekday by car and was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome in the parking lot. At departure, they even waved until my car was out of sight, which truly warmed my heart. The meals were delicious as well. I stayed in a suite on the 7th floor and had a very comfortable time. The only disappointing point was that it felt like the bathwater in the Room had not been changed. I look forward to improvements next time.

    It was a great accommodation.

The shrine-hopping bus was very convenient, and the guide’s explanations were excellent, which made it a wonderful experience. All of the staff at the Accommodation were exceptionally kind, and I’m especially grateful to the person who looked after us at the restaurant. When I casually mentioned something I don’t like, they even accommodated it at breakfast the next morning—I was truly impressed. The portions were just right—not too much—and every dish was delicious. Dinner on the second night had a different style from the first, which was great, and I was happy to see such a wide variety of soft drinks—something I’ve never experienced before. Breakfast included an abundance of vegetables, which felt very healthy and enjoyable. The Onsen was pleasantly warm rather than hot, so I could relax and soak comfortably. However, it would have been nice if amenities were also available in the large public bath area. It was a wonderful Accommodation that I’d love to visit again in another season. Thank you very much.

The dinner atmosphere is like a casual Japanese pub.

Although the dining area is described as private rooms, the partitions are only minimal, so voices carry clearly even from several sections away. As guests drank, loud laughter and conversations made it difficult to enjoy the meal. It was disappointing and felt far from a relaxing Accommodation.

    A wonderful Accommodation

This was my first visit. From the warm welcome at the parking lot to the guidance throughout, everything felt pleasant, and the meals featured locally inspired dishes—especially the soba, which was excellent. I joined a tour because I thought visiting Suwa Taisha on my own would be difficult, starting with finding parking. Thanks to the detailed explanations and safe driving, we were able to get around smoothly even during Golden Week, and it was absolutely the right choice. It’s easy to see why Shinyu has so many repeat guests. If I have another chance to visit the Suwa area, I would love to stay again.

We stayed here during the Golden Week holidays.

This was my first stay in Kamisuwa Onsen. The location was great for sightseeing—right by the shore of Lake Suwa and close to the Geyser Center—so I could easily walk there and had a wonderful time. The staff were very attentive, and both the guest room and the Facility were clean, making my stay comfortable. The meals were delicious for both dinner and breakfast; in particular, the pickles buffet at breakfast left a strong impression. The Onsen water was a little lukewarm, but it left my skin feeling nicely moisturized.

Great Views & Cuisine — Biko no Shizuku Semi-Suite with Private Open-Air Bath

I took the reviews at face value, but I was a bit disappointed. (1) At check-in, I wasn’t told that welcome drinks were available—I only realized after seeing other guests drinking them. (2) In the Room toilet, the grab bar was too close to the toilet bowl and felt cramped; it likely wouldn’t be comfortable for larger guests. It’s a spacious toilet overall, so this was unfortunate. Also, perhaps because it uses a tank system, by the time I used the bidet after washing, it had turned cold—this isn’t very considerate for women. (3) The meal was delicious and beautifully presented. However, when I wanted to wipe my mouth at the end, there was neither a napkin on my lap nor paper napkins on the table; I had no choice but to use the cloth hand towel from before the meal. That really spoiled things for me. (4) With shoes allowed in Western-style rooms, some people may step onto the bed cover with their shoes on. I was told foreign guests are asked not to do so—but even Japanese guests might if they don’t know its intended purpose. A decorative bed cover like this isn’t necessary. (5) When staff entered my Western-style room, they took off their shoes—even though guests keep theirs on indoors. Why? Do those staff members not enter Japanese-style rooms? Would they step onto tatami in dirty socks? Is the same vacuum used for both shoe-wearing rooms and tatami rooms? Are tatami mats kept hygienic? I don’t know what actually happens behind the scenes, but seeing staff remove their shoes made me start imagining all sorts of things. At least in Western-style rooms where shoes are worn indoors, I don’t think staff need to take off their shoes. Except for point (2), these seem like issues that could be fixed quickly. As my Room-related complaint has already been resolved—and some people may not mind—I won’t go into further detail here. What I can say is that an apology and a nice smile alone don’t solve everything.

This was my first time staying here. I was very satisfied with the Onsen, the service, and the amenities. I would like to stay again. Thank you very much. I think it would be even more convenient if there were a smoking area around the 5th floor. Other than that, everything was excellent.

Lake Suwa in Early Summer (?)

I didn’t know Tateshina Shinyu had a sister property. This one, though called Lake Suwa, is a city-style Ryokan rather than one right on the lakeshore. Still, both are equally refined. Their standout Japanese cuisine and the tableware used for it were truly impressive as well. “City-style” refers to the building itself—an apartment-style structure. Perhaps because of the location, their half-day tour service that takes you around two shrines in Kamisuwa and two in Shimosuwa also seemed very thoughtful and popular. Since the driver also serves as a guide, it’s a valuable service. As in Tateshina, the staff here appeared exceptionally well trained, making our 2-night, 3-day trip a comfortable and highly satisfying experience with top-quality service.

We were also satisfied with the meal service. The parking lot is on the Ryokan grounds, making it senior-friendly. The portion sizes were just right, and we were able to finish everything. The pickles buffet offered many delicious varieties. It was nice that the futons had been put away by the time we finished breakfast. We would like to stay again.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

This Accommodation is right in front of Lake Suwa, and the building is filled with cherry blossom motifs that made us feel the spirit of spring. We could also see Lake Suwa from our Room, and we were able to relax at a leisurely pace. Both the Room and the facilities were very clean and well maintained. The bath had tatami flooring, which felt wonderful, and the Onsen was excellent. The meals in particular featured a seasonal menu, beautifully presented on lovely Kutani ware dishes, so we enjoyed them even before taking a bite. Of course, everything tasted amazing as well. Every dish respected the natural flavors of the ingredients, allowing us to fully savor spring. There was also a wide selection of alcohol, and we were happy to discover some rare varieties. This is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality.

Not too little, not too much—just right is what matters most.

When I travel, if the food is delicious I tend to overeat and end up feeling unwell. What I appreciated most was being served beautifully prepared dishes made with seasonal Shinshu ingredients, thoughtfully presented in small portions.

Because we had such a wonderful stay last year, we returned again this year around the same time. It is a very calm and relaxing Ryokan, and it feels truly comfortable. From our room we could look out over Lake Suwa, and we were able to spend our time in complete peace. All of the staff were kind, gentle, and welcoming, which made our stay even better. Thank you to the female staff member who assisted us at dinner for your attentive hospitality. The female staff member who guided us at breakfast and the male staff member who took photos for us at departure were also there when we stayed last year. We didn’t speak much this time, but my companion and I mentioned how nice it was to see familiar faces again. This year we also joined the free Suwa Taisha tour. It was so well done that it felt like something you could charge for, so it was excellent value. Overall, I think this is a truly wonderful Ryokan where you can relax and take your time. We would love to stay again next year as well. Thank you very much.

    Panoramic View of Lake Suwa

A room with a large window overlooking Lake Suwa offered a beautiful view of the setting sun. I was also drawn to the many ink paintings displayed in the hallway. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a private dining room, so we could relax. The Japanese kaiseki dinner featured a wide variety of ingredients, with many local specialties, and was beautifully presented and delicious.

Ideal Accommodation for Visiting Suwa Taisha Shrine

I stayed here to visit Suwa Taisha Shrine and had a very comfortable time. The Japanese-style Room with beds was relaxing, and the view of Lake Suwa was beautiful. Dinner started with seasonal appetizers, and everything through the main meat dish was carefully prepared using fresh ingredients. I also enjoyed the pickles buffet at breakfast. The shrine visit does require a Reservation, but there was a free shuttle bus from the Accommodation, and we were given a guided tour as well. The staff were kind, and details like the scent of sandalwood throughout the building showed their high level of hospitality. Great value for money—I was very satisfied.

It was an Accommodation that our whole family would love to visit again!!

My husband, our fifth-grade daughter, and I stayed here as a family of three. Everything about our stay was truly comfortable that I hardly know where to begin. We take a family trip about twice a year, and all of us were genuinely impressed by how pleasant and attentive every staff member was. The slightly silky Onsen that left my skin feeling great; the meals with just the right amount of thoughtful explanation at both breakfast and dinner; the uniquely relaxing atmosphere throughout the property, including our Room; the shop where we couldn’t help buying all sorts of things; the extraordinary view overlooking Lake Suwa; and even the sofa by the front desk with detox water that my daughter kept coming back to in both the evening and the next morning—this was time we could only have spent here. I believe what made it such a wonderful experience overall was that every staff member we interacted with treated us so warmly. From guiding us as we entered the parking lot to seeing us off at departure—and even those we simply passed in the hallway—everyone was truly outstanding. Thank you very much for your hospitality. We would love to stay again.
