    The Onsen is wonderful.

    This was our Accommodation for the second day in Shima Onsen. The focus of this trip was, above all, soaking in the Onsen, seeing “Shima Blue,” and enjoying great food. I never imagined that water blended from two different hot spring sources could feel this good! The moment we got home, we were already planning our next visit—Shima Onsen is definitely somewhere we’ll return to. What disappointed me was breakfast. My expectations were honestly low—I would have been satisfied with just hot rice and miso soup. However… when the dishes were explained (by a Japanese staff member), the vocabulary was extremely limited: “This is tomato tofu.” (I could see that.) “This is dressing. It’s fine to use all of it.” (Explaining how much dressing to use from a small dish…) And finally, “This is nimono.” Since it included unusual summer vegetables, I really wanted to hear more—things like what they were, whether they were locally grown, etc. Also, the way the rice was served felt a bit off. Food should be enjoyed with both eyes and palate, but hearing its story can make it even more moving. If only the names are given—which anyone can do—it might be better to provide written descriptions instead; it seemed understaffed anyway, and that would likely save time. Also, around 8 p.m., while relaxing after my bath and reading a book in my Room, I heard loud footsteps from above—like someone stomping around. It stopped after a while. In the morning I realized why: directly below where I sat at breakfast was my Room. When I later saw how that staff member walked—with heavy stomping steps—I thought, so that’s what I heard! Aside from those points, we were very satisfied overall. We wanted to go to Lake Okushima but found there was no longer a taxi company available; despite that, they worked hard to arrange an EV car and explain the mountain roads in detail. Since this trip involved an incredible number of books for me, my luggage became very heavy as well—I’m sure providing Shuttle Service wasn’t easy. With gratitude to the front desk staff and those who provided Shuttle Service, I’ll end this reflection on our trip here.

    The view from the Room is amazing.

    The staff were polite and kind. The Onsen was very effective. Personally, it works best for me in this order: Shima, Kusatsu, then Ikaho. My wife soaked too long and ended up feeling unwell from the hot spring—her first time experiencing that. In a good way, the Facility felt modern. The service style was also modern and more like a Hotel approach. Think of it as an Onsen at a long-established Ryokan with Hotel-style guest service. It’s a Facility where I’d like to do a Multiple Night Stay next time. The Western-style restaurant at Kanaya’s entrance is excellent, but it’s only open until 3:00 PM.

    Back again to enjoy Joshu beef L-bone steak!

    I couldn’t forget how delicious it was when I first tried it in April, so I came back again three months later! This time, the meat felt firmer than last time and had more of a lean red-meat texture. After a wonderful meal, we enjoyed complimentary coffee in the lounge, and relaxed in the Room’s open-air bath again and again with the sound of the river as background music. The small raised area in the Room had an awkward step that bothered me, and I think adding a single step would make it easier to use.

    The in-room Onsen was wonderful.

    The Room’s semi-open-air bath was spacious and comfortable. The temperature was just right, and it warmed me up well, though it can be hot in summer. Dinner steak was delicious; everything else was average. Breakfast was described as Japanese-style, so I had high expectations, but it was average. The Onsen and Room were clean and nice, so if I go again, I’ll choose a plan without meals.

    We were very satisfi...

    We were very satisfied with the Room, the service, and the meals. Because there are only a few guest rooms and the number of guests is limited, we only ran into other guests at mealtimes, which gave it a strong sense of privacy and made it even easier to enjoy time with a partner or family. Since it is a newly opened Hotel, we could feel the staff’s fresh enthusiasm, which made us feel relaxed and happy. The Room was clean, and we were able to take it easy since Netflix and YouTube were available. Also, as it was a birthday celebration, we ordered a cake via Cake.jp; it was delivered to our Room right on time, and we also received congratulatory words. Since the Room has an open-air bath, there was an unexpected incident when a large spider appeared, but that also became a good memory. Shima Onsen itself was wonderful as well, but thanks to how well-equipped the Hotel is, it made for an even more special birthday celebration. Thank you very much!

    This is a great accommodation.

    This was our second stay. Each Room has a different layout, and the Room we stayed in this time was properly cleaned, functional, and comfortable. The semi-open-air bath in the Room was spacious, clean, and very relaxing. The service was generally fine, but we could not understand the Japanese spoken by some foreign staff members. The meals were delicious with just the right portions, and we were very satisfied. As for the Facility, due to structural features such as steps on stairways, the lack of an elevator, and level differences inside some Rooms, it feels more suitable for younger guests; depending on the floor level and Room type, some Rooms may not be suitable for older guests.

    The best views, Onsen, and steak

    I chose Kanou because it is part of the Tsuruya group, offers beautiful scenery, and serves delicious steak. 　The check-in system was efficient and well designed. I would have liked to have a bathrobe and a coffee machine in the Room. However, overall I was very satisfied. The view of lush greenery and the river from the window was truly wonderful and very relaxing. The open-air Onsen bath in the Room was also spacious; it warmed me thoroughly and left my skin silky smooth. 　The Joshu beef L-bone steak at dinner was outstanding. The other dishes were also delicious. The service was excellent. 　If I visit Shima Onsen again, I would love to come back for the steak.

    Dinner was very satisfying, but

    It was my first time visiting Shima Onsen, and I stayed one night at KANOUYA Shima Onsen. The exterior and entrance approach looked quite stylish and raised my expectations, but there is no elevator, and each stair step is a bit high, which felt slightly uncomfortable going up and down. The stairs and hallways also felt somewhat cheaply built, so it didn’t feel luxurious. The front desk becomes unattended after 8:00 p.m., and even before then you have to contact them via a personal mobile phone, which didn’t feel worth the price. On the other hand, the room was very comfortable. The large window, chairs, and sofa were all nice, and it was great to look out at the forest while listening to the river. The Onsen at this Facility is only available in the guest rooms; to use a large communal Onsen you need to go to a neighboring Facility, and I was told there is an additional fee for that, which was a bit disappointing. That said, the water quality was excellent—my skin felt smooth—and I could really feel warmth from deep inside my body; it truly lived up to being free-flowing from the source. Soaking in the Onsen while looking at the green mountains made me feel amazing. Amenities were minimal, but the shampoo, conditioner, and body soap were very high quality—I wanted to buy them to take home. For dinner, I recommend starting with the bacon and romaine lettuce salad. The main dish was Joshu beef steak; paired with wine it was delicious and very satisfying. The bread was also excellent—I even asked where they source it from. Breakfast was Japanese-style with many dishes and a decent portion size as well. Considering the balance of price, food quality, and facilities overall, I think it’s a reasonably satisfying Hotel. I’m not sure if I would return here specifically again, but I would like to visit Shima Onsen again.

    The Onsen was very relaxing.

    The in-Room Onsen was very relaxing. The staff were warm and welcoming, and I had a comfortable stay. However, despite informing you twice in advance that I have a seafood allergy, I was surprised and disappointed to be served two fish dishes at breakfast. Because food allergies can be life-threatening, I expected to be asked before the meal was served. Also, the Room and hallways had a slightly old smell and felt dusty. Since I have a house dust allergy, I couldn’t stop sneezing and it was difficult.

    A Hotel for Adults, Filled with Negative Ions

    We stayed as a couple in our early 40s. In late April, we were surrounded by lush greenery and enjoyed breathtaking views. The open-air bath in the guest Room was extremely satisfying. The Room wasn’t as spacious as we expected, amenities were minimal, and there are no entertainment facilities—there isn’t even a shop—so it’s recommended for an adults-only trip where you want to quietly enjoy dinner and the open-air bath. There’s also no elevator, and the front desk is connected to the dining area, giving it a compact layout. If you’re traveling with children, you may feel concerned about disturbing others. Perhaps because many guests are calm and considerate, it was very quiet throughout our stay and we were able to relax. The steak at dinner was outstanding. We wondered if the course meal would be enough, but the steak portion was generous and we left completely full. The bread was also excellent, and the balsamic steak sauce seemed homemade—it was delicious. There is a sister Facility across the way, and for an additional 550 yen you can also enjoy their open-air bath.

    Authentic Steak Dinner

    Unfortunately, due to heavy rain, the standing open-air bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water was accompanied by a tremendous roar on the roof, and rainwater poured from the gutters onto the edge of the tub. The next day, the rain stopped, and it was peaceful with the sound of the river flowing. The “Joshu Beef L-Bone” authentic steak dinner for dinner was very delicious, and it made me want to try other recommended cuts as well.

    It is quiet.

    The Room was clean, very quiet, and comfortable. The Onsen was at just the right temperature, so I could stay in for a long time. The service was attentive while keeping a comfortable distance. There was an issue with the Room we had reserved for the day, and they kindly changed it to an upgraded Room. The meals were delicious, but breakfast felt a bit light for me since I have a big appetite. One thing that concerned me was that the return Shuttle Service was scheduled for 10:00 but arrived 8 minutes late, so I missed the bus I had planned to take and my trip back became rushed. That was disappointing.

    It was a mediocre accommodation.

    There are no Japanese staff. I stayed for two nights, and apart from the check-in process where the shortcomings of the reserved room were pointed out, leading to a room upgrade with an additional fee, I did not see any Japanese staff until check-out. The accommodation was operated solely by foreign staff who had limited understanding of Japanese, making it difficult to get clear explanations about how to use the facilities. On the third day, there was heavy snowfall. The slope leading out of the accommodation was not cleared of snow, and around 7:30 AM, a couple's car got stuck despite having winter tires. They could not receive support from the foreign staff at the accommodation and were not even provided with a shovel for snow removal. They had to struggle on their own in snowy conditions. Upon suggesting they contact the emergency number for nighttime assistance at 7:30 AM, they were told it would take time for help to arrive. Eventually, they managed to borrow a shovel from a nearby hotel within the same group and freed their car. The upgraded room was clean, spacious, and comfortable with a semi-open-air bath that was very enjoyable; however, other aspects of service fell short of expectations. As others have mentioned in reviews as well, there is no elevator in this facility. The stairs are far from barrier-free design and seem unsuitable for elderly guests or those with mobility issues—more appropriate for young people full of energy. Given its price point though, it might cater more towards affluent young guests instead.

    Onsen, delicious meals, and a memorable journey

    We enjoyed the autumn leaves from the private open-air bath in our room. The steak at dinner was tender, and even in my 50s, I finished it easily. There were many reviews mentioning that moving around from the first-floor rooms was challenging, but we spent most of our time soaking in the onsen, so the sense of seclusion was actually nice.

    Lovely Open-Air Bath

    Instead of a large public bath, each Room comes with an open-air bath, which was absolutely fantastic. The T-bone steak for dinner was also incredibly delicious. If I had to point out drawbacks, it would be the lack of an elevator and the slightly cramped seating layout in the restaurant. I would love to visit again in a different season.

    Despite the accommod...

    Despite the accommodation costing just under 100,000 yen per night with two meals included, luggage was not carried to the room. There was no elevator either. The stairs were narrow, making it quite a struggle to carry suitcases up and down. The parking lot in front of the accommodation only had space for four cars, and if those spots were full upon arrival, guests had to park at a nearby affiliated parking lot themselves and walk back. Unfortunately, it was raining at that time, but no umbrellas were offered as a courtesy. The room I stayed in was on the first floor. From check-in to check-out, it rained continuously. Rainwater from the fourth-floor roof fell directly onto the balcony and open-air bath roof below, creating an unbelievable noise that made it impossible to open the windows. I hope they install proper rain gutters in the future. It was a somewhat disappointing accommodation experience overall.

    Celebrate Respect for the Aged Day & rejuvenate from the summer heat.

    We stayed for 2 nights and 3 days to celebrate Respect for the Aged Day with my mother. When I asked her if the stairs were too much for her, she said it was a wonderful accommodation! The front desk staff even prepared a special shower chair for use in the bathroom, and we are truly grateful for their thoughtfulness. The meals were also excellent—the steak was delicious! The cooking, tenderness, and juiciness were perfect. I was amazed to see my mother enjoying her meal so much—it was quite surprising yet delightful! The artwork by Yuji Nishijima at the main entrance was also beautiful. We are thankful that we could spend such a comfortable time together with my mother's smile throughout our stay.

    I have stayed in roo...

    I have stayed in rooms with private open-air baths several times before, but this was by far the most satisfying experience. The standing open-air bath, the clean room, and the very delicious dinner were all incredibly enjoyable and relaxing. However, there were two points of concern: 1. At night, if you wanted non-alcoholic drinks like juice, only water or alcohol was available, which was a bit inconvenient. 2. For our 1-year wedding anniversary, I had ordered a surprise plate; however, during check-in when confirming my name, I was charged for the plate separately and it spoiled the surprise. Additionally, considering its price point, the plate itself felt a bit underwhelming. If these two points could be improved upon, it would make staying here even more comfortable and satisfying!

    A very nice accommodation.

    This accommodation was chosen by my wife for my birthday trip. There was a small surprise during dinner, making it a wonderful birthday. We stayed in a first-floor room with an open-air bath that you can stand in, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. Even though there was a sudden downpour, we enjoyed it from the comfort of the bath. Since the accommodation is run by a small team, there were moments of slight confusion, but everyone’s hospitality made each interaction pleasant. The signature L-bone steak was incredibly delicious; at first, we worried if two people could finish it all, but before we knew it, the plate was empty. As this accommodation has recently reopened after renovations, everything is very clean and beautiful. However, considering how steep the stairs are from the front desk to the first floor, I think room wear like samue might be more suitable than yukata. Personally, I almost tripped several times on those stairs because I wasn’t used to wearing yukata and stepped on its hem—something that felt quite dangerous.

    First Visit to Shima Onsen

    I stayed during the holiday and had an extraordinary experience. The view of the mountain right in front from the open-air bath was breathtaking! The food was delicious, and I would love to visit again! It felt like an accommodation perfect even for a solo trip!

    This is an Accommodation you’ll want to return to. The insects around the Onsen can be a bit concerning, but it’s hard to avoid. I’d love to come back again for both the meals and the Room. Thank you very much. Next time, I’d like to try the lobster.

    Relax to the sound o...

    Relax to the sound of the river and feel healed by nature. The deep bath was wonderful! It would be nice if there were tea bags or other beverages in the Room, as there were none provided. The Room on the first floor has steep stairs, so even though free drinks are available in the lobby, it was a bit inconvenient to go and get them when I wanted to relax in my Room. I’d love to visit again during a different season!

    The bathroom lighting attracts insects, which diminishes the enjoyment of the bath. Measures such as installing curtains to prevent insects would have been appreciated. As it has been less than a year since opening, we hope you will continue to listen to guest feedback and aim to create an accommodation that prioritizes guest satisfaction.     This was my first visit.

    The location was a bit inconvenient with limited bus schedules. Leaving the lights on attracted insects, but it created a slightly dim and cozy atmosphere. The accommodation was very clean, with a wide variety of alcoholic beverages available. One night wasn't enough to fully enjoy everything. I came looking forward to the open-air bath and ended up setting an alarm every hour to use it 13 times! By the time I left, my skin felt smooth and I was completely satisfied. I’d love to visit again around autumn if possible—hopefully for two nights next time! Thank you very much!

    Enjoy Oku-Shima's hot springs and savor premium Joshu beef beyond your expectations.

    Large windows offer a stunning view of lush greenery and the mountain slopes covered with coniferous trees, while the crystal-clear Shimagawa River flows below. The excellent location and breathtaking natural beauty left me in awe. The private open-air bath in the Room, where you can listen to the sound of the stream, was pure luxury. The entrance and lobby lounge are located on the third floor, and there is no elevator—only stairs for access. The staircase from the second to first floor is particularly narrow and steep, making it less suitable for elderly guests with mobility concerns. However, I was impressed by how new and clean everything inside was, as well as its sleek design. The guest Room includes a refrigerator, mineral water, yukata robes, sleeveless haori jackets, and indoor sandals. Switches are discreetly placed throughout; I found it convenient that an outlet hidden behind a shelf on the nightstand made charging my phone easy. Dinner featured an exceptional Joshu Wagyu steak that truly amazed me—it was worth traveling here just to enjoy this meal! Other dishes like amuse-bouches and soup were also delicious. The service provided by Japanese female staff members was impeccable and left a positive impression. On the other hand, breakfast mainly consisted of simple small side dishes to accompany rice; however, I found the grilled river fish wrapped in foil somewhat underwhelming. Additionally, only one foreign staff member (who had a great smile and personality!) handled breakfast service but seemed to struggle slightly with Japanese communication skills. With support from more experienced team members who could provide attentive care during meals or other services moving forward—this would elevate overall impressions even further. I look forward to returning during another season for its stylish private open-air baths in guest Rooms paired with outstanding steak dinners! Thank you very much for this wonderful experience!

    Had a comfortable stay.

    The entire place was very clean, and the Room was well-maintained. The view from the Room was also amazing. The rental bicycles made it easy to explore nearby attractions smoothly. I also had a massage, and not only was it excellent, but I also received thoughtful daily advice. If I could take more time off work, I would have loved to extend my stay! Every staff member was attentive, and the dinner at Lourdes was absolutely delicious.

    The building is very...

    The building is very clean as it has only recently opened. With few guest rooms and fewer people inside, it is quiet. While staying in the Room, there were moments when I could slightly hear sounds from next door. Although the operation and service have some rough edges, there was nothing unpleasant at all. Above all, the dinner was absolutely delicious! Even those who might be tired of typical Hotel meals will find this place delightful. I was amazed to enjoy steak of this level at such a price! The male staff member who served us had excellent timing and conversation skills. He seemed quite young but demonstrated extensive knowledge about the local area, other Hotels, and food—clearly showing his dedication to learning. I would love to visit again!

    A property worth traveling to Shima Onsen just for the food.

    The day after enjoying snowboarding in Echigo Yuzawa, we headed to Shima Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. We found Kanouya and decided to stay here. It seems that it just opened last November, so we were a bit anxious. However, it turned out to be a special property worth visiting. Above all, the T-bone steak at dinner was truly exquisite. You can enjoy Wagyu T-bone steak that you can't taste anywhere else but here. It's incredibly delicious, incomparable even to famous steakhouses in Tokyo. You'll experience such an exceptional taste that you'll wonder what the aged meat you've eaten until now was all about. This property is worth visiting just for this steak alone. Since it's still newly opened, there might be some imbalance between the hard and soft aspects of service and facilities. I look forward to its growth and evolution from now on. It's a property I definitely want to visit again. We were saved by the response of the male staff who served us at the restaurant. It was really great because he was there. I have high expectations for his growth as well. Please do visit once and indulge in their steak; I think it will become an unforgettable taste of your journey. The breakfast was also just right in quantity and delicious.
