I had dinner at the ...
I had dinner at the luxury auberge VILLA COMMUNICO in Nara. The location is at the foot (or maybe halfway up?) Mt. Wakakusa; it’s doable on foot, but a car is recommended. From the restaurant, Mt. Wakakusa is directly across the road, with deer here and there—an unmistakably Nara-like view. The Hotel as a whole is a renovated traditional Japanese house, creating a stylish space that still feels steeped in history. With only five rooms in total, it has a wonderfully secluded, hideaway atmosphere. Dinner starts all at once at 18:30. Guests gather in the second-floor lounge at 18:00 and relax with pre-meal tea while enjoying views of Mt. Wakakusa. When it’s time, you move down to the first floor. On entering, there’s an iconic fireplace and counter on the left. The first course is eaten standing while listening to the chef’s explanation—an unexpectedly unique experience. Cucumber, elderflower / Yamato jidori chicken, nasturtium Freshly made mozzarella, caviar Bonito, molokhia (jute mallow), okra Oyster, pine nuts, chives Japanese duck (Yamato-gamo), pumpkin, truffle Flounder, Manganji chili pepper, red-legged shrimp Sakaeya aged sirloin of culled Japanese Black wagyu Fig, blueberry, juniper berry Both the presentation and flavors were excellent. In particular, the dish combining bonito with molokhia and okra was outstanding. Courses are basically served simultaneously for everyone and paced to match slower diners overall, so dinner progresses at a leisurely speed. If you eat quickly, be aware there may be some downtime between courses.

The meals were very delicious, and I was satisfied.
The meals were very delicious, and I’d love to come back and enjoy them in a different season. The location is convenient—you can even interact with the deer at Wakakusa-yama right in front, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine is also nearby. There is a step up by the washbasin area, so please be careful. The staff were also very helpful. However, there was no one at the front desk and no way to call someone, so I ended up calling the nighttime phone number I had been given. I think this needs improvement. I later realized that I did not receive the Diamond member benefits, which was disappointing.

Dinner begins by the crackling fire
Nara is only about 30 minutes away by train from home, so a day trip would have been easy, but deciding to stay overnight made it a luxurious, special dinner experience. The bathtub has a thin rim that makes it easy to get in, and it looks stylish too. Maybe it’s a design you can only have at a Hotel where you don’t need to worry about heat retention. The hand wash on the simple, stylish vanity came in a beautiful bottle and smelled wonderful, so I looked it up thinking I might buy it for home—and was shocked by the price. It was made in Denmark. Oh—so does that mean this is the “Nordic style” thing? The ceiling was thickly plastered into something like an igloo… is that meant to be snow? The pajamas also felt great on the skin. My husband loved the grassy terrace and sat there for about an hour after his bath. Now, dinner: At the counter with firewood burning dramatically, we enjoyed drinks and fragrant, perfectly grilled yakitori while watching the chef prepare mozzarella right in front of us—it was so much fun. My husband loves yakitori and said it was so good he wanted to eat about ten skewers. It was my first time having dishes grilled or seared over a wood fire, and each plate was beautiful with thoughtful touches. When that mozzarella from earlier came out neatly finished and topped with caviar, I felt oddly attached to it. A chef’s work really is something precious. The fish skin was unbelievably crisp and aromatic. I usually can’t eat fish skin, but this one was truly delicious! From around here I started feeling the seasoning was a bit salty (tastes vary from person to person, so please don’t worry about this). My husband said it didn’t taste salty at all and enjoyed it. Then with the flow from golden eye snapper → meat dishes, the flavors felt even stronger… and when that led into white chocolate poured over dessert, it ended up tasting overwhelmingly sweet to me… I found myself wishing inside, “Please take off the white chocolate…” (again—tastes vary from person to person, so please don’t worry). The final madeleine was incredibly delicious and brought back that sense of bliss. I also loved the fresh herbal tea—it had a strong aroma. Breakfast surprised me because duck appeared on the menu. Sorry I couldn’t finish it. The tea porridge wasn’t like typical tea porridge, but it was tasty. All staff were very pleasant, but some explanations of dishes and drinks were a little hard to catch (ah—maybe I’m just getting older). I’d also prefer having a TV; being told there “is none” felt slightly disappointing. One amusing touch: a hairbrush shaped like an udon noodle strainer.

We found a wonderful place!
Before dinner, the second-floor gallery overlooking Mt. Wakakusa becomes a waiting bar, where you can relax while watching the deer heading home. Once guided to the first-floor restaurant, you are welcomed by the hearth and served—standing—local cucumber gazpacho, Yamato Nikudori chicken (a firm-textured gamefowl-type breed?) pinchos, and freshly made mozzarella kneaded right in front of you. After being gently drawn in at an unhurried pace, you are shown to your table. The course goes without saying: each dish showcases carefully selected ingredients with meticulous technique, paired with clear and thoughtful explanations. And finally, even the coffee comes as a surprise. The staff are friendly as well, with a comfortable sense of distance.

A Quiet Stay with Views of Mount Wakakusa
We were looking forward to the meals as this is an auberge, but our stay happened to coincide with a period when the restaurant was closed. Due to work commitments we could not change our dates, and at my daughter’s strong request we prioritized staying here. For dinner, we asked the staff for recommendations and dined at a nearby restaurant. The location, with Mt. Wakakusa directly in front of us, was truly wonderful. In the season of fresh greenery and with favorable weather, it was a very appealing setting for my daughter and me to enjoy a relaxing holiday together. On the other hand, the bathroom facilities were simple, and we found them slightly inconvenient in terms of usability. We also had high expectations for breakfast, but overall it felt quite ordinary. Since neither of us usually eats large portions, the amount was sufficient; however, adding fruit or yogurt would have made it more satisfying. Freshly brewed coffee was served, but since breakfast is such a lovely time to relax while looking out at Mt. Wakakusa, we felt that offering a generous amount in a pot would make it feel even more luxurious. The location really is outstanding, and we were able to spend a quiet and comfortable time there.

It was wonderful.
I was looking forward to staying at the foot of Mt. Wakakusa. When I arrived, I found that although the old building had been renovated, the interior felt like a completely different world! And to my surprise, there was Michelin’s Bibendum. I hadn’t realized it was a Michelin-starred restaurant and even asked if it was okay to come in travel clothes (lol). The Room also impressed me—the ceiling slopes down at an angle, and the design is not only beautiful but incredibly detailed. Dining while watching the wood fire, and the richness of the drink pairing as well. I was moved from start to finish. Thank you very much.

Severe staff shortages; not worth the price.
Honestly, I arrived with high expectations, but I was not satisfied at all. The staff shortage was obvious: glasses in the lounge were not replenished, and the selection of lounge drinks did not feel appropriate for an Accommodation costing over 50,000 yen per person. The Room was also not good for the price (which I somewhat expected), and when I tried to wash my hands after check-in, there were several long hairs in the sink. Is this also due to understaffing? At this price point, it feels like an unacceptable oversight. The food featured local ingredients and tasted good, but considering the price, that is to be expected. Shouldn’t they make the dining experience more enjoyable overall, including service? Here again—perhaps due to understaffing—the explanations of each dish were rushed. With that level of service, I felt it would be far better to go into town and enjoy a great meal there. I never felt welcomed at all; it simply seemed like there weren’t enough people on site. At this price, it doesn’t seem acceptable. Also, I was very concerned that a sheet containing personal information of guests staying that day had been left behind in the lounge—an unbelievable mistake.

Professional service
We visited as a family of three. Despite the charming, traditional exterior, we were surprised to find such a spacious guest room tucked away inside. At the start of the meal, when everyone began eating at once, there was an indescribable sense of tension. However, as we watched the chef’s serious gaze and precise movements, we gradually relaxed and found ourselves captivated by true professional craftsmanship—it was incredibly impressive. The dishes were meticulously crafted down to the smallest details; each course brought new surprises, and everything was truly delicious! We also appreciated that each dish was carefully explained one by one. It felt clear that great care is taken in selecting ingredients from places that are truly valued. To sum it up: simply outstanding. We plan to visit every season from now on. We look forward to seeing you again this summer—thank you in advance.

Wonderful Hotel
It was a truly wonderful Hotel. I was surprised to find it right in front of Mt. Wakakusa, and seeing so many deer was very soothing. They even had deer crackers prepared in our Room, so we went out right away to feed the deer. I think this Hotel’s location and dining are outstanding. The food was so delicious it made me sigh with delight, and my husband ordered the alcohol pairing; he said it was fun because they chose options he wouldn’t normally pick that matched the dishes perfectly, and they even served dessert wine. I don’t drink alcohol, but I was impressed by their very unique and delicious soft drinks. This time we chose a Room without a view, but when we went to the lounge, Mt. Wakakusa spread out right in front of us, so we often relaxed there while enjoying complimentary drinks. We also felt thoughtful touches in many ways and were able to spend a very restful stay. We would love to visit again when we go to Nara.

A charming auberge nestled at the foot of Mount Wakakusa, deepening the allure of Nara
From the tableware and restaurant to the interior design, guestroom styling, and amenities, the chef’s attention to detail is evident everywhere, creating a truly impressive sense of unity. During my stay, I felt completely removed from everyday life—almost as if I had wandered into another world. The exterior and lounge offer a charming Japanese-style space in a renovated traditional house, with large windows overlooking Mt. Wakakusa and deer strolling nearby. As you move further inside, the atmosphere shifts dramatically; the restaurant in particular feels like dining in a cave. The excitement of the open kitchen adds to the experience, and each dish is so beautifully presented you’ll want to admire it for ages. The menu carefully notes ingredients and producers, and for items from Nara Prefecture it even introduces their specific places of origin in detail. With every course, you can feel respect for both ingredients and makers—and the chef’s passion comes through clearly. Even familiar ingredients reveal new flavors and appeal, offering delightful surprises. Yet nothing feels gimmicky; instead there’s a comforting familiarity that strikes an exquisite balance, making every dish thoroughly enjoyable. Including breakfast the next morning and the overall Accommodation experience, it was a stay I won’t forget. It seems possible to visit just for the restaurant as well, but I strongly recommend staying overnight too so you can fully immerse yourself in this auberge’s unique world.

It was a memorable stay.
Thank you for such a warm, delicious, and moving time. First, we were amazed by the outstanding location upon arrival. Stepping through the noren curtain into a nostalgic, earthen-floor-like entrance, we were captivated by the beautifully cool renovated interior and its surprising depth. It felt as though every part of the Facility was filled with care, making for a truly comfortable stay. The meals enjoyed in softly lit, calming spaces delighted all five senses—we were continuously moved by each dish. The gentle breakfast that made us feel refreshed and renewed was just as wonderful. This experience has left a lingering afterglow—I can already imagine myself recalling it again and again for some time to come.

We had a relaxing and comfortable stay in an outstanding location. The design and furnishings reflected a deep attention to detail and really resonated with us. Unfortunately, due to our schedule we couldn’t make it for dinner this time, but the breakfast was excellent, making great use of local ingredients. Next time, we’ll be back specifically to enjoy dinner.

The special offer was forgotten.
This was the first Accommodation my daughter chose and paid for as a thank-you for everything. We visited looking forward to the wood-fire cuisine. All of the staff were very courteous, and the Room was spacious, which was great. However, there is no place to set a towel in the restroom, so we had no choice but to place it in the small gap between the washbasin and the wall. Water splashed onto it every time we washed our hands, so it would be helpful to have somewhere to hang a towel. Dinner featured unusual dishes and was a bit hard to understand, but everything was delicious. For breakfast, we were served chagayu (tea rice porridge), a local specialty of Nara. We were told it is blended with black tea, but I noticed an unpleasant bitterness in the aftertaste, and the accompanying dishes felt somewhat mismatched. This Accommodation also offered Diamond member benefits. At other places, these are usually explained by the property staff so you can feel at ease; however, here there was no mention of late check-out, and we did not receive the sweets that should have been included. Diamond members should be aware that you may need to request these benefits yourself so they are not overlooked.

Deer are friends!
Thank you for your hospitality. My wife loves deer, so we visit Nara about once every year, and this time we stayed at Villa Communico for the first time. In conclusion, we were extremely satisfied because: ① The proximity to the deer made it feel like living alongside them. ② The dinner was exquisite. We often visit auberges within driving distance from Kanto, and here the taste was exceptional, with a great presentation by the chef at the start. ③ The room was very modern and functionally renovated, with a balcony where we could watch deer in the morning and evening—a definite plus point. ④ The staff maintained just the right level of distance to make us feel relaxed. On the other hand, there were a few minor concerns: ① The front desk phone is a personal mobile number and is almost impossible to reach. ② Breakfast focuses too much on "Nara" themes and feels slightly lacking. ③ There’s no clear guidance for parking, making it hard to find. However, if you accept these as part of its charm, they are not major issues. In any case, for our family trips to Nara in the foreseeable future, Villa Communico will be our top choice!

First stay during the hotel's first anniversary.
The chef, who once ran a restaurant in Ikoma that I had always wanted to visit, opened an auberge on Mount Wakakusa, so I made a reservation for the New Year. Later, it earned a Michelin one-star rating, adding a special touch to the experience. Upon arrival, we were greeted with "Today is our first anniversary," which felt like a meaningful coincidence. We chose the "Water" room without much thought. It was very relaxing with features like a small balcony, two sinks, and freshly ground coffee beans for brewing. The room also had deer crackers and human-friendly versions of them as well. Stepping out of the accommodation's entrance revealed lush greenery on Mount Wakakusa and friendly deer approaching us—an enjoyable interaction. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the meals. The chef specializes in wood-fired cuisine, creating dishes that were both delicate and complex in flavor—absolutely delicious. The pairing selections were meticulously chosen to perfectly complement each dish. It truly was an auberge where all five senses could be engaged. Breakfast included unique items such as porridge infused with tea and other delightful dishes we had never tasted before. A surprise plate celebrating my milestone birthday from my wife added an emotional touch to this memorable stay. The service was exceptional—from the warm welcome to the chef’s hospitality and attentive staff—all leaving lasting impressions. This is an auberge we would love to revisit during another season!

We stayed as a couple in May. Located in a relatively quiet area beyond the main tourist spots, it was the perfect place to unwind and escape from daily life. The meals, which we had high expectations for, exceeded them entirely—both dinner and breakfast were exceptional experiences. You can savor seasonal local ingredients prepared using various wood-fire cooking methods. From start to finish, every moment of dining felt truly special. The restaurant floor is connected to the street facing Mount Wakakusa with just a single glass door, offering an open yet otherworldly atmosphere. During twilight, as the sky gradually darkens, you might even catch deer strolling along the street—a quintessential Nara scene visible right outside the window. The building itself is meticulously designed with attention to detail, creating a luxurious yet calming space that incorporates elements of traditional Japanese architecture. This accommodation is perfect for special occasions or commemorative trips with loved ones. We also hope to visit again during another season. It’s said that on January’s Yamayaki (mountain burning) day, you can enjoy a prime view from here—it would be wonderful to experience that someday!

Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful stay. As it was an extremely hot day, after check-in we relaxed in the classic second-floor lounge with a beer in hand, looking out at Mt. Wakakusa and tourists playing with the deer. The first floor, where the restaurant is located, has an enveloping atmosphere throughout, including the guest rooms. Dinner began with an unexpected twist, followed by beautifully paired dishes made with carefully selected ingredients and delicate technique. The room was spacious and comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed the complimentary drinks. The next morning we had a Japanese breakfast featuring Nara ingredients, then headed to Mt. Wakakusa with the deer crackers we were given the day before. We were chased by deer, but it was a deeply satisfying one-night stay. We’ve visited several auberges around Japan, and “VILLA COMMUNICO” is without question highly recommended.

Stayed for one night with dinner and breakfast included. The accommodation was Kyoto townhouse-style, quite different from the Western-style building shown on the website, which was surprising. The room itself was Western-style, newly renovated, and very clean. Although the room did not offer a view of Mount Wakakusa (as it faced the opposite side), I could see deer grazing in the park. Both dinner and breakfast featured creative dishes with impressively light seasoning. While dinner was delicious, it felt slightly overpriced. Dinner started at 6:00 PM, and breakfast options were available starting from 8:00 AM or later.

The view of Mount Wakakusa from the lounge was excellent. I would love to visit again during the Mount Wakakusa Yamayaki event. The renovation preserved the charm of the traditional house, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere. The wood-fired cuisine was also delicious, with each ingredient's flavor beautifully highlighted. One concern about the Room was that around 4 a.m., light came through the blinds near the window and shone on my pillow, making it difficult to sleep. Is there any way to address this? Additionally, I felt that the bathtub in the bathroom might be slightly too large. I enjoyed breathtaking views, delicious meals, excellent service, and a relaxing time overall. Seeing a newborn fawn in the morning was an unforgettable experience made possible by staying here—it truly moved me.

We had a pleasant stay. Facing Mount Wakakusa, we enjoyed dinner at the Auberge, took a morning stroll to nearby Nara Park and Todai-ji Temple, played with deer, had breakfast, and felt energized for sightseeing in Nara. It was quiet and nice as it is slightly away from crowded areas. We would love to stay here again.

Thank you for your stay. As an auberge, the meals were prepared with fresh ingredients and great care, and every dish was excellent. For those who don't mind, the lack of a TV or phone in the room, the time it takes to fill the bathtub with hot water, and only one set of towels per person might not be an issue. However, for those seeking comfort in their accommodation, it may feel a bit lacking. The meals were delicious, and the room was stylish and clean. I would love to visit again for the cuisine. The perfect environment
Busy with work every day, I was looking for accommodation that could meet my somewhat selfish needs: "I want to spend time alone without talking much," "preferably surrounded by lush greenery," "want to do a digital detox," and "it would be perfect if the food is delicious." This place fulfilled all of those desires. Located right near Mount Wakakusa, the area is blessed with fresh greenery. Taking an early morning walk was truly refreshing. For dinner, we gathered around a wood fire with other guests and enjoyed each dish after receiving explanations about the cooking methods and Nara-sourced ingredients. The course meal then began. I opted for pairing at an additional cost, and every drink was aromatic and delightful. Both dinner and breakfast featured abundant use of local Nara ingredients. This is the perfect environment for working women, especially those who are feeling tired. I definitely want to visit again!

An auberge you'll want to revisit in different seasons for its seasonal ingredients.
A charming auberge located at the foot of Mount Wakakusa, adjacent to the grounds of Todai-ji Temple. Originally a traditional house used as a souvenir shop, it has been beautifully renovated to blend seamlessly with its surroundings. From the thoughtfully designed rooms, you can enjoy views of deer roaming nearby. The cuisine emphasizes wood-fired cooking, fermentation, and aging techniques, offering a delightful 10-course meal that pleases both the palate and senses. With Nigatsudo Hall of Todai-ji Temple nearby, you can enjoy an early morning visit in a serene and cool atmosphere with few visitors around.

A Memorable Spring Journey
A journey from Wakayama to Nara. On the final day, which was also our wedding anniversary, we chose this accommodation to enjoy a comfortable space and delicious cuisine. The thoughtful parking arrangements upon arrival, the warm hospitality of the staff, and the stunning view of Mount Wakakusa with blooming cherry blossoms created a serene atmosphere for guests. It was a wonderful accommodation away from the hustle and bustle. The much-anticipated wood-fired cuisine exceeded expectations. Each dish reflected the chef's dedication, featuring local ingredients and fermented flavors crafted with care and love. The delightful conversation with the server made it an unforgettable dinner experience. Everything was absolutely delicious—thank you for such a treat. An early morning walk on the following day offered exclusive tranquility at Nigatsudo Hall’s stage and Todai-ji Temple’s approach. We savored these luxurious moments along with a delicious breakfast and carefully brewed coffee to conclude our trip perfectly. We look forward to visiting again—thank you very much!

As a reward for yourself
I imagined something wild because it was said to be cooked with firewood, but it was completely different. The dishes, made with local and seasonal ingredients and fermented broth, are not only delicious and healthy but also a feast for the senses with their beautiful presentation, fragrant aroma, the sound of firewood, and a slight warm breeze. The staff moved in perfect harmony, like watching a movie. Even the final dessert was truly delicious, making it a blissful time. The Room is simple yet warm, and the Yamato (Yamato) time bath allows you to soak in plenty of hot water, which is delightful in the cold season. In front of you is Mount Wakakusa, and Kasuga Taisha and Todai-ji are within walking distance. In the early morning when tourists are sparse, take the deer crackers provided in the Room, enjoy a leisurely visit, and return to the Hotel for a delicious breakfast. Ah, happiness.
