    The Onsen was great.

    We stayed here as a family during the Obon holidays. The Room was much more compact than we expected, so it felt a bit cramped for a family. However, the building felt relatively new and we didn’t notice any sense of age, which was nice. There were a few things that concerned us. When I called with questions, a Japanese staff member assisted me, but when we arrived at the Hotel, all of the front desk staff who helped me were foreign nationals. I have no issue with that, but at times their Japanese was broken and hard to understand, so communication wasn’t smooth and I couldn’t fully understand the explanations. Also, when I asked a male staff member to replace towels because they smelled unpleasant, he seemed bothered and handed me replacement towels in silence without even saying something like “I’ll replace them,” which left a bad impression... Another concern was cleanliness in the guest Room. There was dust and hair in gaps around the bed, which bothered me. Not all of them, but some towels had an odor as well, which was honestly very disappointing. It’s such a shame because the interior is relatively new and lovely, yet it feels like attention to guest Rooms has been overlooked. On the positive side, there was an area where you could drink barley tea or water after using the Onsen, and bread was also provided. The Onsen itself felt wonderful—overall those parts were great. I hope you will pay at least basic attention to cleanliness in guest Rooms. And I would also be very happy if customer service could meet at least a basic standard.

    Compact Room

    The Room was smaller than expected. Breakfast was a half-buffet, and the bread was freshly baked and delicious. There was only one toothbrush, so I got another one at the front desk. I think it would be better to have two.

    The open-air bath was great, but it was disappointing overall.

    Stayed in a Room with an open-air bath. The open-air bath was nice, but the bathrobe had frayed fibers with several loose threads hanging down, and the sofa was badly worn, as if a cat had been scratching it. Also, the card key was out of order, so we had to lock the door with a physical key. It was disappointing because it felt like the Facility and provided amenities were not being properly maintained.

    Escape from everyday life

    Upon arrival at the Accommodation, a female staff member greeted us with a gentle smile and warm hospitality, making it a wonderful memory. We were also very satisfied with the welcome drink service, which included coffee and a small Danish pastry.

    It was very good.

    We stayed for one night as a couple on a weekday after the Golden Week holidays. The building is new and very clean. The Room feels like a Business Hotel with tatami flooring. I did wish it were a bit more spacious, but relaxing on the bed worked well enough. For dinner, we enjoyed Joshu Kuroge Wagyu! We upgraded to a luxurious kaiseki Plan, and from the start both sukiyaki and steak were cooked at the same time. After that, dish after dish of Joshu beef kept coming—so much that it was hard to finish everything. Everything was delicious, but since the sukiyaki and steak overlapped, I would have preferred them served at different times so we could savor each one more slowly. The breakfast buffet had a sufficient variety for breakfast, and it was unique that you could choose combinations of an egg dish, a meat dish, and accompanying vegetables in addition to the buffet items. We were also able to use the baths at their sister property “Yorokobi no Yado Takamatsu,” and they even provided towels there, which made it easy to go without bringing anything. However, the open-air baths at both Accommodations are simply outdoors—you can’t really enjoy any scenery. The stone sauna (ganbanyoku) and sauna were operated on a time-switch system shared between men’s and women’s bathing areas. The staff were all foreign nationals, but everyone had wonderful smiles and was very pleasant, which made our stay comfortable. The next day after checkout, they let us keep using the parking lot until 12:00 p.m., so we could sightsee nearby without moving our car—this was also great.

    Fully satisfied with the Room, Onsen, and meals

    The Room was clean, the Onsen was relaxing, and the food quality was excellent—we truly enjoyed our stay. We would love to return again.

    The Room is compact ...

    The Room is compact but comfortable. It has beds on tatami mats, which feels very pleasant. The surroundings are quiet as well. You can also use the bath at the main building (Takamatsu); I tried it the next morning and it was very relaxing.

    A small, relaxing Hotel

    It was conveniently located for visiting all the sightseeing spots in Kusatsu Onsen. We used both the on-site baths and the main building’s private bath, and were able to relax. Both dinner and breakfast were generous in portion size and delicious. Although it snowed on and off, we were given rides by car to the bus terminal and the main building, which was a great help.

    Top-Tier Grade: “Reiro”

    We stayed in the “Reiro” Japanese-modern special Room (Japanese-Western style) with two private open-air baths as three guests: two adults and one child (age 2). The Room isn’t very large, but having the open-air baths made that a non-issue. Both baths were set to a fairly hot temperature, and we enjoyed each one. The weather was great, and the night sky with a full moon and stars made the atmosphere perfect. Dinner was served at the annex, and the portions were quite generous. If you plan to snack around before dinner, be careful—it can get too much. (Due to circumstances I couldn’t drink alcohol, but even so there was more than enough food.) Overall it felt more about quantity than flavor, though it wasn’t that the food was bad. The grilled Wagyu chateaubriand, in particular, was cooked perfectly and delicious. Breakfast was a buffet. The selection wasn’t large, but it was well balanced and very satisfying. One thing to note: you Reserve your breakfast time at check-in, and when we arrived around 5 p.m., only the 7 a.m. or 9 a.m. slots were still available. If you have plans for the next day, it’s best to check in early to secure your preferred time slot. The staff were also very polite and helpful in Japanese, which we appreciated. We’ll definitely choose Reiro again next time.

    Easy-to-use Accommodation

    If you’re visiting Kusatsu to enjoy an Onsen-hopping trip, the Facility and breakfast feel more like a business hotel, but it’s budget-friendly and still satisfying. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for those looking for a luxurious stay, a spacious Room, or a traditional Ryokan atmosphere. It was also a bit disappointing that the Room is fully visible from the house across the street. We had dinner in a private room in the main building, but the Joshu beef-focused course wasn’t very tasty overall. The first shabu-shabu was excellent, which made it even more disappointing.

    The building overall...

    The building overall has a clean feel, and although compact, the accommodation was satisfying. Regarding the bath, the small space is a downside, but since you can also use the bath at a sister property, it’s not an issue.     5-minute walk from Yubatake, located in a quiet residential area, this compact accommodation offers an excellent balance of price, service, and facilities. You can truly feel the effort put into providing a great experience. Although most staff are international, they are fluent in Japanese and work diligently. Their hospitality is sincere and impressive. Compared to other hotels in Kusatsu Onsen, the pricing is fair. The free services (shuttle service to/from the bus terminal, welcome drinks, lounge beverages and snacks, stone sauna) add great value to your stay. The room with an open-air bath "Souten" allowed us to enjoy natural hot spring water at any time. We could relax in the onsen until just before check-out. While compact, the room was functional with all necessary amenities provided. Next time we plan to stay for multiple nights for a more leisurely experience! Thank you very much.     The room was not spacious but was clean and easy to use. Although some reviews mentioned that the front desk staff being foreigners made communication difficult, I did not experience any such issue. The service was excellent. The bath and changing area were small, but I could also use the bath at "Yorokobi no Accommodation Takamatsu," so it wasn't a problem. I was delighted to receive coffee and bread upon arrival. Breakfast had great variety with several types of bread, which were absolutely delicious! Since it had snowed a few days earlier and the ground conditions were poor, having a nearby parking lot was very convenient. The accommodation cost was affordable, making this stay highly satisfying!

    Lowest cost performance

    I only interacted with three foreign staff members, but they (especially the women) were kind and dedicated to their work. The dinner at the main building was overly large in portion and tasted... like a banquet from an old group tour. Coming all the way to Kusatsu, I didn’t want to eat sashimi or sushi rolls & chirashi sushi (poorly made). I would have preferred small portions of local ingredients like wild vegetables or char fish. I had reserved a room with two types of open-air baths, and while the temperature was perfect and comfortable upon arrival, by that night it had turned into a cold bath, so I couldn’t enjoy the open-air bath in my room.

    Wanted to see the Yubatake light-up for my first stay in Kusatsu. The room, though suitable for triple use, felt a bit cramped for two people. Dinner was enjoyed at the sister accommodation (main building?) after a short walk, in a private and relaxed space with delicious dishes. Breakfast, which included semi-order options prepared in advance, had plenty of variety and was satisfying. The bath at the sister accommodation seemed more popular; however, the on-site bath was not crowded and offered an almost private experience with natural hot spring water and women's skincare products provided. The facility was clean, and although most staff appeared to be from overseas, their service was polite and attentive. A complimentary drink service at the sister accommodation upon arrival added a nice touch to this compact yet cost-effective accommodation. However, one downside: the air conditioning in our room did not work at all—despite assistance from staff (with explanations that felt like comedy), we ended up keeping the windows fully open even though it compromised privacy slightly. This was particularly disappointing as we were hoping for a cool retreat during summer.

    A wide variety of dishes at excellent value for money.

    The staff included many international members, but the quality of service was consistently polite and kind. Dinner offered an impressive variety of dishes. Breakfast was also very satisfying and filling. Great value for money! The hot spring water was excellent, as expected from Kusatsu's renowned springs.

    This was my first time staying here. The Ryokan was very clean and well-maintained, which was great. The meals were also very satisfying and enjoyable. The Onsen was nice, but I found it a bit disappointing that the stone sauna room had tiled flooring instead of stones. Overall, I think this is an excellent Ryokan.

    It was a great Onsen.

    The hot water was excellent. The Facility's bath is small, but it was almost always available for private use, possibly because most guests went to the sister facility, which made it very satisfying. The staff were mostly foreigners, but their polite service was pleasant. Dinner was disappointing. The dishes did not match the menu, and when I checked, they explained that there had been a mistake in listing the items on the menu. This was unacceptable and even more disappointing as the dishes that didn’t arrive seemed more appealing. The taste of dinner overall wasn’t great either; the grilled fish was dry and not tasty at all. The pike conger only tasted like brown rice from its coating as well. However, breakfast was delicious! The bread was freshly baked, and dishes like mustard chicken in the morning were tender and flavorful—it made me wonder if there might be a different chef for breakfast! The location is close to Yubatake (hot spring field), so I would love to stay here again in the future!

Regarding the Onsen itself, when I used it in the evening, the indoor bath was unusually lukewarm and seemed poorly temperature-regulated. The outdoor bath was hotter and acceptable. Hoping for improvement at night, I tried again but overheard another guest commenting on how lukewarm it still was. This made me wonder if staff regularly check the water temperature. The next morning's experience with a gender-swapped setup had a warmer indoor bath that felt much better. While I understand how busy things can get, proper temperature management is essential for an enjoyable stay. With high expectations for Kusatsu Onsen overall, I rated this accommodation four stars.

    Compact, efficient, and clean

    Used for a business trip. Breakfast is simple but sufficient, and the bath is not large but has good water. One downside is that the room is completely visible from outside. Stayed on the second floor, and the room was visible from the road in front of the hotel and from the slope across. This might be a concern for women or couples.

    We used the Hotel for a birthday trip. At the time of Reservation, we mentioned that we would like to use any available services for birthday celebrations, but there was no response, and no guidance was provided on the day or at check-in. The guest room and Hotel were reasonably clean, but there were cobwebs in the lobby, and the floor in the stone sauna area was dirty and concerning. We opted for a meal-inclusive plan; breakfast was delicious, but as for dinner, while the sukiyaki meat quality was good, the seasoning was bland. The vegetables also felt more like tasting individual ingredients rather than enjoying sukiyaki as a dish. Additionally, the melon served as dessert was too sour to eat. There were no Japanese staff members; only foreign staff were present. While their intention to provide polite service came across clearly, communication proved difficult at times—some staff members could not be understood at all. Considering we stayed in a relatively high-priced room category, I felt that the price did not match up with the level of service provided. It’s disappointing given how much I had been looking forward to this stay.

    I chose this Property as a surprise for him. The exterior and the atmosphere of the Room were lovely, and the dinner was very delicious. Seeing him satisfied, I felt glad that I decided on this Property! This time, there were no available Rooms with an open-air bath, so next time I would like to stay in a Room with an open-air bath.

    It was very good.

    As expected from its reputation, the onsen was very nice. Since we were traveling with a baby, choosing a bath with an open-air bath was the right decision. The staff were foreigners, but they provided good service, including a chair for the child. Compared to Japanese staff at a luxury ryokan, it might feel lacking, but the spirit of hospitality was definitely present. Dinner is served in the main building, which is a bit inconvenient, but the staff were very accommodating. However, considering it's inland, it's better not to expect much from the sashimi. The portions of sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, and bouillabaisse were very large. It might be better to reduce the portions a bit and improve the quality of the sashimi and desserts. Breakfast was a buffet, and it was very delicious and satisfying. The room might indeed be a bit small, but it was clean, and since we were with a baby, they pushed the beds together for us, so the service was very attentive. It's not an old-fashioned luxury ryokan but a modern stays, so it's recommended for young people.
