Wonderful Hotel
This was my first stay. I wasn’t feeling well and could hardly eat, but everything—starting with the Yamagata beef—looked delicious. My husband finished my portion as well and said it was all very tasty. I used the bath located a short distance away. Since it was raining, I had to take an umbrella, and I did wonder what it would be like in winter if snow falls and things freeze over. However, the bath itself had a pleasant sulfur scent and a charming atmosphere, which I really enjoyed. If I had been feeling better, I would have liked to enjoy a morning bath as well. The Room was very clean and spacious, and even the in-room bath was spotless. All of the staff were wonderful, and I’d love to stay again when I’m feeling well.

Consistently excellent throughout.
From the attentive staff and beautifully prepared, delicious cuisine to the spotless Room and two different baths that were both wonderfully relaxing, our stay was satisfying from start to finish. The Japanese sweets provided in the Room were especially delicious—I almost wanted to buy some to take home (they may even be handmade). If I had one small wish, it would be that the lounge drinks included alcohol, which I personally think would have made it even better. The staff’s warm smiles were the best hospitality of all.

Wonderful Hotel
I suddenly wanted to enjoy Zao’s Onsen water quality, so I made a Reservation the day before.\nIt was my first stay; the facilities were clean, and both the meals and welcome sweets exceeded my expectations.\nMost impressive of all was how wonderful the staff were. Even though I took a little extra time at check-in, different staff members checked in on me during dinner and again at check-out as if they were in charge.\nIt was clear that the entire team works together to care for guests.\nA couple of minor points: the bed felt a bit firm, and while the Onsen itself was great, it was 108 steps from the main bath—plus it was raining—so it felt slightly inconvenient.\nIt also seemed that a new Onsen building is currently under construction. Once it’s completed, I’d love to stay again right away.

The meals, Onsen, Room, and service—everything was perfect!
As there was availability, you kindly upgraded my room, and even though the twin room I reserved was already spacious, I was able to enjoy an even more luxurious stay. After visiting Yamadera, the in-room massage chair was greatly appreciated, and I used it many times. Thank you very much. The meals were wonderful just as the Reviews said—each dish was carefully prepared and delicious. There was more Yamagata beef than I expected, and I ended up eating too much rice. Thank you for the feast. I enjoyed the baths many times as well, but what stood out most was of course Zao Onsen. I was surprised at how strong the sulfur content was! The wooden design was also lovely, and it was so good that even though it’s a bit away from the main building, it didn’t feel like a hassle at all. All of your staff were very pleasant, and even traveling alone I felt completely at ease and had a wonderful stay. Thank you again for everything.

Solo travel
I was nervous traveling alone, but everyone made me feel welcome from check-in. During meals in particular, the staff chatted with me in a friendly way and warmly engaged with other guests as well—it really showed how much they love this Accommodation. The food was outstanding; I was amazed to find such delicious sashimi in Yamagata. I’ve traveled a lot, but it’s rare to come across sashimi this good. The “108-step” Onsen impressed me even more—please be sure to experience it for yourself!

I’m looking forward to next year even more.
This is a highly recommended Accommodation with hospitality at a very satisfying level. The newly renovated Room had a massage chair, allowing us to enjoy a truly relaxing time. Although it has not yet been introduced on the Hotel’s website, a new bathing Facility is being newly built in one section of the Hotel and is scheduled to open in January next year. It will be a sulfur Onsen bathing Facility.

It was a truly wonderful Hotel. The free-flowing natural hot spring with milky water, the Yamagata beef-focused dinner, the breakfast buffet that was outstanding in both quality and variety, the tastefully designed guest rooms, and the warm, welcoming hospitality of the staff—all were excellent. We were also able to reach Okama Crater in Zao in about 30 minutes by car without getting stuck in traffic. Thank you very much to all the staff. We would love to stay again.

The bath was wonderful.
The Onsen water quality was excellent. We really enjoyed the unique waters of Zao Onsen. The bathhouse was atmospheric and full of character, and we would love to visit again. We thoroughly enjoyed the Yamagata beef, but we would be happy with simple dishes for the rest—so it would be great to have a few more Yamagata-style local specialties.

It was worth more than the price.
It was my first time visiting Zao during this season, and I really enjoyed it—the scenery was beautiful. I’d love to visit again once the construction is finished. Seeing a Japanese serow casually in the vacant lot next door was truly heartwarming.

I found the best Onsen Accommodation.
We won a trip to Yamagata through JR’s “Somewhere” campaign, and decided on a last-minute visit to Zao about two weeks ago. We chose this Hotel for its easy access via the Shuttle Service, its high ratings, and the appeal of Zao’s Onsen—but we were completely won over in every respect: the hospitality at Shiki no Hotel, the wonderful Onsen, the cleanliness of the Room, the simple yet more-than-sufficient and well-equipped Facility amenities, and the delicious breakfast (we booked a Plan without dinner). Overall, I’d say it’s among the very best Onsen Accommodations I’ve ever stayed at. The milky-white bathhouse that feels so quintessentially Zao is 101 steps from the entrance. It far exceeded expectations with its retro charm and excellent water quality—I soaked there again and again. The alkaline bath inside the Hotel was also very comfortable, and we even had the bonus of seeing a colony of Asian skunk cabbage from the window. Ski season is completely over at this time of year, so it’s something of an in-between season—but I’d love to come back to be healed by these waters and by everyone’s kindness at this Hotel. Breakfast was delicious as well—though for me as someone from Kansai, it did taste a little on the salty side.

My mother and I visited Zao Onsen, a place filled with memories of my grandmother. The cherry blossoms around the Hotel were in full bloom, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We were comforted by the warm hospitality of each staff member. We also appreciated being able to choose our main dish at dinner from three options. We were able to relax during our Multiple Night Stay. Thank you very much.

It was the best stay, soothed by the top-floor Room and warm hospitality.
I stayed at Zao Shiki no Hotel. This was my first trip to Yamagata, and in short, it was such a wonderful Hotel that I definitely want to come back. About the Room: when I requested a Room with a great view, they kindly upgraded me to one on the top floor. The view was truly stunning, and with the large open windows, I could have looked out forever. The Room was spotless and felt luxurious, with Ryukyu tatami mats and Simmons beds. The lighting was plentiful and bright, making it very comfortable. The toilet also had thoughtful features like automatic lighting and an auto-opening/closing lid—overall, the facilities were excellent. On arrival, there were welcome treats in the fridge (yokan and kiwi), and even the hand towel was a proper towel-type oshibori—small touches that made me feel well cared for. The Onsen was also fantastic. The large public bath and open-air bath inside the Hotel were spacious and relaxing, with great views. In addition, “Hanareyu Hyakuhappo,” an annex Onsen within walking distance, offers milky white sulfur spring water flowing directly from the source. With an open-air bath and footbath as well, it’s a perfect way to enjoy an authentic Zao-style Onsen. It felt like a real hot spring with mineral deposits floating in the water, warming me through to my core. For dinner I chose Yonezawa beef sukiyaki and shabu-shabu—everything was delicious with generous portions. I couldn’t finish dessert because I was so full, but they thoughtfully prepared it so I could enjoy it back in my Room (and it looked like other guests did the same). There is also complimentary service at the front desk until 9:00 PM with drinks, snacks, and ice pops. Having an ice pop after bathing was especially refreshing. There were several flavors; I tried mango and milk—both were excellent. Breakfast buffet options were plentiful as well. In particular, Yamagata’s local soup (with beef tendon) was outstanding—I left fully satisfied even in the morning. Honestly, every meal item I tried tasted great. Most impressive of all was the staff’s hospitality. Everyone greeted us with warm smiles and attentive service; at checkout they waved until our car disappeared from sight—it genuinely moved me. Overall: amazing views, wonderful Onsen experiences (including both baths), delicious food throughout، และ exceptional service—all in one outstanding Hotel. When visiting Yamagata again، this is absolutely where I'd choose to stay again۔

I love Yamagata.
Two years ago, on my first trip to Yamagata, I stayed at the sister Hotel Omiya. Last year, I stayed at the International Hotel. This time, I made a Reservation here to try the other one. It was still a bit early for the cherry blossoms, but this is also a wonderful Hotel. You can enjoy drinks anytime in the lobby, and the Room was very clean and even had a massage chair. We also received melon as a welcome service. The bathhouse just a short walk away has cloudy mineral water, and it feels amazing. It felt like having a private bath—perfect. The meals were delicious; the meat was tender, and there were so many dishes we couldn’t finish them all. Above all, Yamagata rice is outstanding. I want to come back again and again. All of the staff are truly friendly, always smiling and lovely—it makes me smile too. I definitely want to visit again. Thank you very much.

The Zao no Kaze Group!
One of three group Hotels in Zao. With the hot-spring hopping pass, you can enjoy the Onsen at each Hotel. The International Hotel, as expected, has a large public bath and a “snow-viewing bath” featured on TV. Omiya Ryokan has a nostalgic atmosphere, and Shiki no Hotel offers carefully selected free-flowing hot spring water in its annex. It warms you to the core, so you’re less likely to get chilled even when walking outside. Since I was staying here after Omiya Ryokan, I took the ropeway to the summit to see the snow monsters and came back down—but it was still too early for check-in. I thought I’d wait in the lobby, but even though it was before 2:00 PM, they said, “Your Room is ready,” and let me in. They even upgraded me to a Room with a massage chair! My final day in Yamagata started on a high note. I strolled over to the International Hotel with my bath basket (they also offer Shuttle Service if you ask). The last uphill stretch is pretty tough, but it’s good exercise. The Room had Ryukyu tatami mats that made it very relaxing. Near the summit station (mid-March), there were only thin snow monsters left—but I watched real thick, impressive ones on the Hotel’s snow-monster channel instead (laugh). Still, even the thinner ones at the top were more than enough for tourists to enjoy—and maybe it was better without long ropeway lines. For dinner I chose the quality-over-quantity course: Yamagata beef filet steak! Tender and delicious. Even after soaking in the bath, both teppanyaki aromas and sulfur smells clung to me—I felt like I smelled funny (laugh). Dinner also included Yamagata’s famous imoni stew—my favorite inland-style flavor (soy sauce & beef). They let guests decide when to light it up at the table, so I could eat it while it was truly hot—much appreciated. I headed to breakfast looking forward to its great reputation. In a spacious dining area with views of falling snow outside, I enjoyed a relaxed meal. There was an excellent variety of Japanese/Western/Chinese options; since I don’t eat much, I tried many different dishes in small bites each time. From 10:00 AM checkout until the Shuttle Service bus to Yamagata Station (1:00 PM), I took a walk along Takayu Street to buy inkamochi recommended by this Accommodation. After that I considered visiting a nearby pond by the Hotel but gave up because of heavy snow buildup making access difficult up close. After waiting until 11:30 AM when bath cleaning finished, I enjoyed one last Onsen soak and then they drove me to Yamagata Station via Shuttle Service . Thank you very much for everything!

Delicious cuisine and the finest Onsen
I stayed here for skiing. The meals were delicious, and I enjoyed the sulfur hot springs both inside the Hotel and outside. The food was excellent, and I loved being able to try local ingredients. The staff were friendly and very attentive, which made it a wonderful trip. It was a shame that the snow monsters had melted and there wasn’t much snow for skiing, but next year I’ll come earlier.

Autumn Foliage and Onsen
This was our second visit, and once again we had a very comfortable stay. We enjoyed the beautiful autumn leaves from both the Room and the Onsen, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meals as well. As always, the staff’s cheerful greetings were pleasant, and we truly feel this is an outstanding Onsen Accommodation. We also heard that you are planning to build a new open-air bath, so we look forward to visiting again.

It was very relaxing.
I stayed here for a hike up Mt. Kumano. All the staff were very kind and attentive, which I really appreciated. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, making this a truly satisfying trip. It was also conveniently located near the bus terminal and the ropeway station.

Enjoyed the Onsen.
The free shuttle service from Yamagata Station was very convenient. Although the shuttle bus was full upon arrival, I thought check-in might be crowded, but there were several staff members with tablets, and I could check in without waiting. The room was spacious and clean, which lifted my spirits. The male staff member who assisted us during dinner provided excellent service and left a great impression. To visit the "Hyappappo no Yu," we wore boots and bench coats available in the lobby. While it felt a bit troublesome at first, soaking in the sulfur onsen while enjoying the view of accumulated snow in the open-air bath was absolutely amazing. On our way back to the hotel after warming up in the onsen, walking 108 steps through crisp cold air felt refreshing. Even after checking out, we were shuttled to a sister accommodation for more onsen hopping and fully enjoyed our time relaxing in hot springs. Although I initially wondered if Zao would be enjoyable during winter without skiing, we got to appreciate frost-covered trees (Juhyo), indulge in delicious meals, relax with exceptional service at this perfect accommodation featuring sulfur-rich snowy baths—it truly healed us!

Impressed by the excellence of the staff
I visited for an Onsen trip with my parents. As I researched beforehand, the Onsen, meals, and room were excellent, and the staff's service was outstanding! Everyone greeted us with smiles and answered our questions accurately, which made us very happy. In particular, the foreign staff member who attended to us during meals spoke beautiful Japanese and even saw us off with a smile after we left the dining area! Such exceptional service is rare even at places that charge double the price. It truly became a wonderful trip. Thank you so much. We will visit again!

The strongly acidic sulfur hot spring provides warmth and satisfaction for your body.
The renovated rooms are spacious and user-friendly. However, the main attraction, the Onsen, requires a 50-meter walk outside, which might be inconvenient. The food is plentiful and delicious.

It was comfortable.
Stayed for Zao mountain climbing. The room was renovated just a few years ago, making it functional and comfortable. Although I usually don't use hotel amenities, the POLA skincare cream and scalp water provided here were very pleasant, and I used them multiple times after bathing or before going out. Dinner was the standard type with Yamagata beef (grilled on a ceramic plate). The variety and portions were generous enough to fill me up. The Tsuyahime rice and Yamagata beef were delicious. However, most of the dishes were already served at the start of dinner in a group-style serving method, which was slightly disappointing. Considering the staff's workload, it might be unavoidable. That said, hot dishes were served fresh each time, so there was no issue with that. The male staff member who attended to my meal service had a wonderful smile and kindly interacted with me in a friendly manner each time—something I truly appreciated as it helped ease my sense of solitude during this solo trip. The Onsen itself was incredibly relaxing—a turquoise-colored cloudy acidic bath that tingled on the skin; if some water got into your mouth by chance, it tasted sour like citric acid! The detached Onsen is indeed far away (laughs), so moving around in rainy weather might be challenging... Additionally, for my mountain climbing plans the next day, they kindly transported my luggage to a nearby affiliated hotel for me—it was extremely helpful!

Excellent and attentive service!
Located near the ropeway station on the outskirts of the Onsen town, this accommodation offers a quiet atmosphere with spacious rooms and enjoyable views from the windows, allowing for a relaxing stay. A shuttle service is available from Yamagata Station, which was very convenient as we traveled by Shinkansen. Additionally, a shuttle service to and from the famous Zao Onsen Open-Air Bath for day trips was provided, showcasing excellent hospitality that exceeded expectations. The meals were beautifully presented with ample variety; the main dish featuring Yamagata beef was exceptionally delicious and generously portioned. Breakfast was so delightful that I ended up eating more than usual.

Normal
It might not be bad, but it feels like a typical hotel. The facility might be good, though. It gave me an opportunity to rethink the purpose of choosing accommodation. Why is the natural hot spring bath located so far away? I chose the matsutake mushroom plan, but were they imported? Especially the rice dish lacked both the aroma and flavor of matsutake mushrooms. Everything else was delicious, which made it even more disappointing.

The breakfast was divine.
A free Shuttle Service is available from Yamagata Station, which is very convenient as a regular bus ride costs 1,200 yen one way. Inside the facility, the complimentary drink service with snacks is a delightful touch. The bath includes an outdoor natural Onsen that can also be used for day trips. It features Zao's characteristic cloudy water and sulfur scent. While the indoor bath does not appear to be an Onsen, it might be suitable for those who are not fond of sulfur smells (though such people might not visit Zao in the first place). Above all, I was amazed by the high quality of the breakfast buffet. There aren't any luxurious ingredients like Yonezawa beef steak on offer; instead, it's simple dishes that are all incredibly delicious—clearly prepared by highly skilled chefs. Additionally, it's rare to find facilities with such well-designed barrier-free toilets!

It was a relaxing experience.
I visited for the first time at the end of August, and despite the ongoing heatwave, Zao offered a refreshing climate that felt like early autumn. The staff warmly welcomed me with smiles, and I was immediately impressed by the beautifully renovated and serene room. The thoughtful touches such as sweets and chilled cut fruits in the refrigerator were delightful surprises upon check-in. The baths include an indoor bath within the Hotel and a detached Onsen with natural sulfur spring water. While the detached Onsen offers a charming atmosphere to fully enjoy, I had to change into geta sandals to get there, so I walked carefully to avoid slipping. Dinner was absolutely delicious, especially enjoying Yamagata beef to its fullest. They even prepared dessert so it could be enjoyed in my room. High-quality Onsen, rich nature, exquisite cuisine, a clean room, warm hospitality from staff, and a calm and relaxing Hotel atmosphere— everything provided healing for both body and mind. Thank you very much. I look forward to visiting again!

We stayed for one ni...
We stayed for one night as a couple. We chose this place because we wanted to enjoy the Zao Onsen. Located at the very end of the onsen town, it was a quiet and peaceful spot. The building seemed a bit old, but the room we stayed in appeared to have been renovated—it felt new and comfortable. The Onsen we were looking forward to was about a 2-minute walk from the Hotel, and there was also one inside the facility. Each had different water qualities, which made it enjoyable. One thing that made us happy was during dinner when we were too full to eat dessert. A male staff member kindly prepared it for us to take back to our room. We were tired that day and wanted to relax in our room quickly, so this gesture was greatly appreciated. What disappointed us was that there were no lockers with keys in the bath area and some issues with room cleanliness. There were hairs left in the corner of the toilet sink area and inside the yukata drawer, which slightly dampened our mood—especially since it was such a lovely room otherwise. Upon departure, they gave us gum as a wake-up treat—a thoughtful touch that made us happy. We would love to visit again!

Couple's Getaway
This was my first time staying here. After carefully considering hotels in Zao Onsen, I chose this Shiki no Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the room, cuisine, and bath. The room was especially spacious, well-maintained, and clean, allowing me to relax comfortably. I would love to stay here again when visiting Zao.

Everything is perfect.
It was my first time visiting Zao Onsen, and both the sulfur onsen and the scenery around the hotel were absolutely stunning. I was very satisfied with the room, bath, and meals, but above all, I felt warmth and care from the staff who seemed to be working with a small team yet providing thoughtful services. It was truly healing. The dinner featuring Yamagata beef was delicious, but breakfast was equally impressive. Despite being a buffet, every small dish was tasty; salads were fresh; there were generous portions of Yamagata beef; and even a dedicated toaster for pizza showed great attention to detail. Just reheating it slightly made such a difference! The cheerful staff would kindly point out that "this is also from Yamagata," which added to the experience. The greetings and interactions from the staff were so pleasant that I wished I could hear them every morning. Including its sister accommodations, there’s extensive use of wood in their design which is delightful to look at without getting bored. In fact, we ended up spending two nights indulging in onsen without doing any sightseeing like going into the mountains—it still didn’t feel like enough! After checking out, we received what looked like candy but turned out to be "Denroku Beans"—a product from a local Yamagata company—showing their dedication to promoting local specialties! Since then, I've become such a fan that I purchase products from Yamagata whenever I see them. This is definitely an accommodation I'd love to visit again!
