    Guest Satisfaction

This time, we stayed at an Onsen Accommodation for five days. Even among higher-priced and highly rated Accommodations, there were some that were very disappointing, but Shoraiso was extremely satisfying. This was a repeat stay, and it is an Accommodation we would like to visit again. Thank you for your continued support.

    A very quiet, relaxing place.

We visited to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday. It was a long drive from Yokohama to Nagano, but this was a wonderful Accommodation that truly made us glad we came. The in-room open-air bath was a little hot and needed some adjustment, but it was clean, spacious, and free of insects. The shampoo and conditioner also left our hair smooth and silky. (Some Ryokan at this level still leave your hair feeling rough.) All the staff who welcomed us were smiling, and during dinner the head chef served the main dish right at our table. Everything was delicious—made with local ingredients and carefully prepared with great attention to detail. On our way out, they even opened the souvenir shop in the main building earlier for us, so I was happy to be able to buy the souvenirs I wanted. My parents were very pleased as well, so we would love to visit again while they are still healthy.

Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality. The seasonal cuisine was truly delicious, and the staff member in charge handled the timing and pacing with real professionalism. I have visited many Ryokan, and this one truly stood out. The food was excellent. For the highlight dish—the meat shabu-shabu—the head chef personally served us, which is something rarely experienced. With international experience as well, their perspective is genuinely global. They not only satisfy guests with the料理 but also leave them feeling truly cared for. I am also grateful to the staff member in charge for their attentive service from start to finish. I look forward to enjoying your seasonal cuisine again next time. The bath was deeply relaxing, and I slept well, spending a very comfortable time. Until we meet again. Many thanks.

    Reviews

The Room was very cozy, and the large public bath had a spacious, retro-style atmosphere that felt wonderful. The meals were also extremely delicious. It was a small, relaxing place with a great sense of cleanliness, and I was satisfied with everything. I also appreciated the complimentary treats such as pudding and beer. That said—this is unrelated to Shoraiso—but when I accidentally drove into a one-way street, a man in town (with a shaved head) in an oncoming white wagon got out of his car and shouted at me. Even though I tried to back up and make a U-turn in a nearby parking area, there were cones blocking entry; while I was confused about what to do, he got out again and yelled loudly for me to make a U-turn there and leave immediately. He appeared to be someone who works in this town. Since the town depends on tourists, I wish people would treat visitors with more kindness. Even though I left Shoraiso in such a good mood, this incident left me furious for days afterward and ruined what should have been an enjoyable trip. I hope local groups such as the chamber of commerce will discuss this as well. I entered by following my navigation system in an unfamiliar place. I felt that empathy for someone feeling anxious like that is something even those who benefit from living in an Onsen town should have. He looked like some kind of local vendor—perhaps from a tofu shop or similar business.

    A cozy luxury accommodation

This was my second stay, and both the meals and the Onsen were very satisfying. In particular, the dinner menu changes every month, and you can really feel the head chef’s dedication to dashi; I think it’s worth staying here just for the food. The lounge is also well equipped, making this a comfortable Accommodation. I’m looking forward to my third stay.

    Anniversary Stay

We stayed to celebrate our child’s exam success. Our Room was close to the lounge, so we went for drinks several times. The beverages and pudding in the lounge were high quality, and we truly felt the spirit of hospitality. The meals were wonderful, especially the dashi broth. We heard that they change the dashi depending on the dish. They also kindly made onigiri from the remaining takikomi rice. The Onsen was also fantastic—we were able to enjoy Yoroduya’s Momoyama Bath, which was a wonderful experience. I would love to visit again. The bath in our Room was lovely as well, but it was so hot that we had to add water even though it is natural hot spring water, which was disappointing. We would appreciate being able to adjust the amount ourselves. My suitcase broke due to my own mistake, and Mr./Ms. S helped us greatly. We are very grateful for your flexible support and for doing your best. Thank you very much. Also, thank you to the proprietress who waved until our car was out of sight. We would love to visit again in a different season.

I think this is the best Accommodation.

Staying away from home can feel different from everyday life, and it’s not uncommon to end up tense, unable to relax, and even more tired than usual. But at Shoraiso, that never happened—I could truly unwind whether I was in my Room or in the lounge (I slept soundly even with a different pillow). I think it’s because of the comfortable sense of distance and the welcoming atmosphere created by everyone on staff and by Shoraiso as a whole. Everything was wonderful: the Room, the Onsen, the meals (especially the delicious broth in the clear soup), and the lounge. Next time as well, I’d like to stop by Obuse first and then visit Shoraiso again. It was a truly enjoyable trip—thank you very much.

    Great Onsen and delicious meals

This was a wonderful Accommodation that truly conveyed the charm of Nagano, Japan. The strong Nagano-focused attention to detail, including the amenities, was excellent, and Japanese-made fixtures and equipment (bathroom fittings, TV, etc.) gave a sense of luxury and reassurance. As it is new, everything was spotless and beautiful. (I’m somewhat sensitive about cleanliness.) The meals were not flashy or extravagant, but they were carefully prepared Japanese cuisine, and the dashi was exceptionally delicious. It was the kind of meal that made me want to come back just to eat again. That said, even I—someone with a small appetite—could finish it all, so it may feel a bit light for some guests. Being able to communicate with the experienced head chef was also a welcome service. Breakfast was also tasty Japanese food, though I would have appreciated a bit more originality. In the lounge, we could enjoy drinks freely, and everything in the in-room refrigerator was included at no extra charge, so we had no inconveniences during our stay. The private Onsen in the Room was something I enjoyed many times; perhaps thanks to the amenities as well, my skin felt wonderfully smooth. One issue regarding the Room: there is one section above the bedroom without curtains, so bright morning light comes in. This felt critical—I couldn’t sleep well—and it was very disappointing. I hope you will consider improving this. My rating may seem strict because I judged whether it felt worth the price—and I honestly felt it was too expensive. Overall everything is well put together including the concept, but at this price point I think there could be a bit more sense of indulgence in the lounge or services. Since there seemed to be many international guests, I also wondered if this might be priced for inbound tourism.

    The Best Accommodation

We stayed here after making a Reservation as a surprise birthday celebration for my husband. The quality of the Room (Kiku) was outstanding, and when we were shown to the Room, we were overwhelmed by how beautiful and spacious it was. The temperature of the private open-air bath in the Room was perfect—not too hot and not too lukewarm—so it was easy to soak for a long time and truly enjoy it. And as mentioned in other Reviews, the in-room dining was absolutely delicious. Unlike typical Onsen Accommodations, it was an authentic kaiseki course: small portions of excellent dishes in just the right amount, enjoyable both visually and on the palate. The main dish being finished by the chef in our Room was also a wonderful touch! My husband was thrilled. Thank you as well for kindly accommodating my request for a birthday message plate. Also, the pudding in the lounge is so good that it makes me want to go buy some! Since the lounge is open from morning until late at night, I could enjoy coffee after waking up without any hesitation, which was great. Thank you to everyone for your polite and kind service! We agreed that we’d like to visit every year from now on—at least once a year! One night isn’t enough!

    Repeated stay.

It has been five months since our stay last August, and we returned for another visit. Last time, we stayed in the "Shakunage" room, so this time we chose the "Komakusa" room on the same second floor. The Matsumoto folk furniture added charm to the beautifully decorated room, and the snow in the courtyard enhanced the seasonal atmosphere. Dinner was a delightful experience with seasonal flavors and colors, complemented by exclusive sake available only at this accommodation. The hospitality felt even more upgraded compared to our previous visit. Breakfast featured a handwritten menu by the hostess and an array of delicious dishes that made us finish every bite of rice—a truly satisfying meal that added happiness to our stay. The lounge's wood-burning stove created a warm ambiance, allowing us to enjoy a romantic nightcap moment. After breakfast, we savored coffee from our preferred coffee machine while cherishing lingering moments of relaxation. Soaking in the open-air bath provided quiet and gentle moments for an indulgent holiday experience—thank you for such a luxurious getaway! We are deeply grateful to all staff members for their thoughtful hospitality and care throughout our stay. Thank you very much!

    Comfortable Accommodation

Room: Komakusa. The room was spacious with a calming interior, and the facility was quiet and comfortable. We enjoyed the private Onsen in the room, as well as the Momoyama Bath in the sister accommodation Yorozuya. The meals were full of seasonal flavors, featuring menus that made great use of locally sourced ingredients. Everything was delicious, but the sea bream kamameshi was exceptional. It was a perfect place to relax in a private setting and unwind completely. We would love to visit this accommodation again during another season!

Perfect Accommodation for an Adult Getaway

This time, we ventured a bit further from home, beyond Hakone and Yamanashi Prefecture, to stay at this wonderful accommodation. As mentioned in the title, the serene atmosphere and the soothing scent of wood upon entering were truly relaxing. The hospitality of the staff was exceptional, making it a delightful stay. The room was spacious with tasteful furniture and impeccable cleanliness, providing a comfortable experience. (However, one small point: the low bamboo chair by the window was a bit slippery when sitting down. Considering that the table is also low, perhaps cushions might be a better option?) While having two types of pillows is common in accommodations, this place also provided an additional long-shaped "Tourmaline Pillow." As someone who often struggles with pillow height, I found this incredibly helpful. It’s said to improve blood circulation as well—perhaps that contributed to my comfort too. Additionally (though I forgot to take photos), I appreciated the wide variety of beverages available in the room. The semi-open-air bath in our room had excellent water quality. Usually after using air conditioning overnight my skin tends to dry out by morning; however, here my skin remained moisturized and smooth—a truly impressive experience. One highlight worth mentioning about dining here is their exquisite "dashi" broth with its profound depth of flavor. It perfectly complemented each dish made from carefully selected ingredients—truly remarkable! The portion sizes were just right for us as well. Although we stayed for only one night this time, next time we plan on staying for two nights so we can spend an entire day relaxing—reading books or enjoying onsen baths without any plans or schedules. My husband even said he felt “rejuvenated” during our stay and thanked me for choosing "Shoraiso," which made me feel even more glad about our choice. We look forward to visiting again soon! Thank you very much for your hospitality until then!

The quality of the meals is disappointing.

I stayed in the "Shakunage" room on the 2nd floor. It is the smallest room, but spacious enough for two people. Being a new accommodation, it is naturally very clean. However, I was slightly bothered by the small size of the bathtub and the sound of the elevator chime, which was quite audible inside the room. The large public bath requires moving to Yorozuya Main Building located just across. Unlike Matsusho-so's modern style, this building has a significantly retro atmosphere. The famous Momoyama Bath has its charm and also includes a small sauna (steam bath). However, you need to go up to 2F within the main building, walk down a hallway, and then descend back to 1F to reach it—this can feel somewhat tedious. Additionally, there was an unpleasant smell from a restroom along that hallway that leaked outside. Meals included local specialties like Shinshu salmon and soba noodles typical of Nagano; however, nothing particularly stood out in terms of taste or memorability. The chef comes out to grill meat tableside but mostly just adds finishing touches for show—it felt unnecessary in my opinion. In the lounge area, craft beer as well as local juices and puddings are available unlimitedly; after meals whiskey, shochu, sake are also offered. While this is nice for some guests' preferences, I personally wish more effort had been put into improving meal quality instead of focusing on these extras.

Accommodation you'd want to visit again

In late October, we stayed for 3 nights and 4 days, arriving on the second day just after 3 PM. Upon arrival, the staff from the nearby "Yorozuya" kindly guided us to the dedicated parking space. The female staff member who welcomed us (and assisted us throughout our stay) provided exceptional service during check-in, making it a pleasant experience. Our Room was on the second floor and featured a design reminiscent of the old Shoraiso building. Though compact, it had a beautifully maintained small garden and tasteful furnishings that exuded cleanliness and comfort. Dinner was an authentic Japanese kaiseki meal—simple yet delicious with each dish carefully prepared. For the meat course, the head chef personally added finishing touches at our table, which made for an enjoyable interaction. Breakfast was also delightful—a refined Japanese meal in just the right portions that left us feeling warm and satisfied. The private open-air bath in our Room was small but had a wonderful atmosphere. While there were privacy screens to block outside views, those seeking more openness could enjoy baths like "Momoyama Bath," "Shinonome Bath," or garden open-air baths at "Yorozuya" across from us—all of which added to our satisfaction with bathing options. Having long wanted to visit Shoraiso, we were finally able to stay here and witness its revival after overcoming challenging times. The dedication of all staff members toward rebuilding this place was evident throughout our stay. At checkout, I spoke with Okami (the proprietress), whose words “We’ll keep doing our best” left a lasting impression on me. I am determined to return again someday with gratitude for such a memorable experience! Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    Repeat: Done

One of the top-class Ryokans I have ever stayed at. First, the Room is purely Japanese-style! It evokes a sense of nostalgia while being very clean and comfortable. You can also fully enjoy the open-air bath at your leisure. The hospitality in their service is truly heartfelt. Every meal is a delight to see, taste, and enjoy! The meat grilled by the head chef himself is exquisite! The rice cooked in a traditional pot was the best I've ever had! I would love to visit this Ryokan again next time to see the snowy scenery. Thank you very much!

    Highly Satisfied

We were excited to travel as a couple and chose Nagano Prefecture this time. Upon arriving at the accommodation, we were impressed by the charming exterior and the scent of wood inside. The handmade matcha and Shine Muscat monaka were incredibly delicious! The room was new, clean, and featured an indoor open-air bath that we used multiple times, leaving our skin feeling smooth each time. Despite being on the second floor, the garden view from the open-air bath was stunning. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious and filling—we left completely satisfied. The morning miso soup was so good that we bought some miso as a souvenir to take home. We also enjoyed a performance by the head chef and had a pleasant chat with them. Every staff member provided exceptional service that truly moved us. This trip was perfect in every way, creating wonderful memories for us. We definitely want to make another reservation during seasons other than winter snow!

    Garden on the Second Floor

It was a pleasant stay. Despite being on the 2nd floor, the garden was wonderful, and everything was in harmony. If I may add, I would have preferred plain white rice for dinner to better appreciate the pure taste of the rice.

    Inappropriate navigation settings

Yudanaka Onsen Town has a rich history, but the roads are narrow and feel like one-way streets despite being two-way. The navigation system directed us to the back of the accommodation. Since it was originally built as an annex to Yorozuya across the street, setting "Yorozuya" as your destination might be more accurate. The toilet felt slightly cost-cutting, but everything else about this accommodation was excellent.

Top-class cuisine in the whole country

I stayed at the annex to enjoy the Momoyama-style bath. The Onsen was as amazing as its reputation, but what truly surprised me was the exceptional quality of the kaiseki dinner. Having visited many luxury Ryokans known for their gourmet cuisine, I can confidently say this is among the top-class in the whole country. Of course, this is my personal opinion, but the delicate flavors of the broth and intricate presentation left a lasting impression. Learning about the chef's impressive background made it all clear. The open-air bath in my room was spacious and thoroughly enjoyable. I will definitely visit again!

It was a very lovely accommodation.

The accommodation was very clean, likely due to its relatively new construction. The cleaning was thorough, and there were plenty of towels provided. The smooth texture of the hot water was delightful, and the staff were incredibly kind, allowing us to enjoy a peaceful stay. The highlight was undoubtedly the cuisine. From the first appetizer, our expectations soared, and that excitement continued through to the final dessert. The portion sizes were just right for us in our 60s—truly wonderful. We rated the guest room a 4 because we felt that a slightly larger sofa would have made it more comfortable for relaxing. Additionally, while the furnishings were beautiful, placing wet glasses directly on the sideboard felt a bit concerning; having small trays or coasters would provide peace of mind. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again in the future—thank you!

A cozy space with the warmth of wood and the comfort of tatami.

The warm wooden atmosphere and the comfort of tatami made for a pleasant stay. It had been a while since we stayed in an all-Japanese-style Room, and it was delightful. We are particular about having a room with an open-air bath, as well as the comfort and size of the bath, and this Accommodation met our expectations perfectly. The large public bath was located at "Yorozuya" in front of the Accommodation, and its "Momoyama Bath Open-Air Bath" had a historical charm reminiscent of old times. The open-air bath in our Room also featured natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source, providing an excellent Onsen experience. The smooth water left our skin feeling soft and moisturized. Dinner consisted of kaiseki cuisine using seasonal local ingredients, with highlights like "Shinshu beef steak raised on apples," which was absolutely delicious. Our Room attendants were a lovely couple who kindly provided detailed information about sightseeing spots, popular soba noodle restaurants, local produce markets, and even prepared printed materials about soba shops during our meal—something we truly appreciated. However, regarding amenities: as someone who enjoys multiple Onsen baths during my stay, having extra cotton swabs would have been nice. Nevertheless, we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the lounge area as well. Overall, it was a 2-night-3-day trip filled with visual delights from the chef's decorative knife work to flavorful dishes that satisfied us completely alongside attentive service that warmed our hearts—a truly satisfying stay at this Accommodation. Thank you very much!

    It was a comfortable accommodation!

It was a wonderful and comfortable accommodation from start to finish. The room initially felt a bit dark, but as I spent time there, the dimness became cozy. The open-air bath was also delightful, with hardly any insects despite it being the height of summer, allowing me to relax for a long time. The food was especially excellent, with just the right amount (though younger guests might find it slightly insufficient). Each dish was explained in detail, making the experience enjoyable. The focus on local ingredients showed great love for the region and added to the charm. I look forward to visiting again soon. Thank you very much!

    Thank you for your patronage.

I stayed at the accommodation on 8/24. Without researching much about this Ryokan, it was my first visit to Yudanaka Onsen that day. To my surprise upon arrival, the building was newly constructed just 1 year and 4 months ago, making it clean, calm, and beautiful. The food was all delicious and truly impressive. As someone who loves traveling and has visited many places, this Ryokan is close to the top rank for me. Although it's quite far from Kobe, it has become one of the accommodations I want to visit again. The female staff serving us, the male guide, and even the chef were all warm-hearted and pleasant. I hope to visit again someday during autumn foliage season! P.S.: The large public bath "Yorozuya Roof" had a retro charm with a wonderful atmosphere—I think you should promote it more!

Accommodation offering a relaxing space for adults

The accommodation has undergone a complete transformation from its days as an important cultural property, offering a very comfortable space. However, there were a few points of concern: despite having multiple rooms, there was only one TV; the toilets were not fully automated as is standard in modern luxury ryokans or hotels; and while the outdoor bath and deck were lovely, there were no bathrobes provided. It would also be nice to have even a small mirror in the shower room. That said, the refrigerator was free-flowing, and the lounge was far more impressive compared to before. Most notably, the exquisite meals prepared by two skilled chefs showcased delicate and remarkable flavors. Despite it being quite some time since our last visit, we were deeply moved by the heartfelt hospitality of everyone at this accommodation, including the proprietress. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again and again.

I was deeply moved by the long-awaited stay at the accommodation.

Previously featured on IKYU PLUS, this accommodation with all five rooms offering private open-air baths was a dream come true for our stay. The room design, complemented by Matsumoto folk craft furniture, blended perfectly with the atmosphere, creating a very relaxing space. The meals were exceptional, with staff providing detailed explanations and recommendations for drinks and ways to enjoy them, making it a truly wonderful experience. Though not large, the lounge offered a cozy space to unwind; in the evening, alcohol was available to enhance your nightcap experience. Breakfast featured an elegant three-tiered box presentation along with handwritten menus—a delightful touch we later learned was personally illustrated by the hostess herself. This warm and thoughtful hospitality made our stay incredibly memorable and heartwarming. A special thanks to staff member T-san for taking a photo together at the entrance—it became one of our most cherished memories! We had such an enjoyable and relaxing time—thank you so much!

We visited for a special trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Everything, from the meals, hospitality, room interior, to the bath, was absolutely wonderful and made for an unforgettable experience. Every moment was truly satisfying, but one of the main reasons we decided to return was the thoughtful care of the staff member who served us dinner. My husband is a foreigner, and they kindly used English words so he could understand while also recommending nearby spots to visit. Their warm support made our time even more enjoyable. We are already looking forward to visiting again! Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.

A charming Ryokan with the scent of wood.

The recently rebuilt accommodation exudes a pleasant wooden aroma, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The staff are polite and soothing in their demeanor. With only a few guest rooms, this ryokan is designed for adults, offering an overall quiet and serene ambiance. There is also a lounge service available. The furnishings reflect tradition and elegance, with the entrance itself showcasing the feel of a luxurious accommodation. The cuisine is exquisite; the soup stock was flavorful, and the salt-grilled sweetfish was exceptional. As the menu changes monthly, I look forward to visiting again.

The perfect accommodation you hope no one else discovers.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become increasingly difficult to find accommodations where the price matches the service, especially with rising costs for hotels and ryokans. I happened to come across this accommodation during a search. The interior is a clean and modern Japanese style, perfectly matching my preferences. The bed was of excellent quality, allowing me to sleep soundly, and the meals were incredibly delicious—100% satisfaction guaranteed. The private open-air bath in the room was also wonderfully designed. During summer, it felt slightly too hot for me, so I diluted it with water; however, I believe it would be perfect in winter. I also enjoyed the Momoyama Bath in the main building early in the morning. The open-air bath there had a pleasantly mild temperature that made me want to stay immersed forever. Additionally, the breakfast illustrations drawn by the hostess are amazing! I'd love to visit again when there's a change in their breakfast menu. It seems like this place hasn't been discovered by inbound tourists yet, so I feel like I need to revisit soon before it's fully booked! If you're hesitating—now is your chance!
