    Disappointing Grand Mercure

I wanted to rate this stay 0 due to how poorly the incident was handled, but I’m raising it by one level thanks to the response of one female staff member. The incident began when my wife went to the bath after 8:00 p.m. and was bitten on the foot by a large centipede nearly 10 cm long—the shiny black kind. It was right at the entrance from the changing room into the bathing area. There were many small children there that day, and if things had gone slightly differently, a child could have been bitten. Who would ever expect a centipede at their feet? Fortunately, my wife is a nurse, so her foot did not swell severely. However, there was no apology from anyone in charge, and they did not even come to check on her. Only the female staff member mentioned above apologized. This could have become a serious issue for the Hotel, and I feel their response this time was completely unacceptable—worse than merely inadequate. I often saw staff following operational manuals, but their lack of crisis-management awareness is beyond discussion. At checkout, once they looked at the screen, another female staff member apologized, but we never saw anyone in charge until the very end. A disappointing Grand Mercure.

    First-time experience

We stayed from 9/3 to 9/4. We visited as a family of three with our 4-year-old son. There were various events, and he was very satisfied, including the meals. We reserved a baby-friendly Room, and I was personally surprised that it even had a projector. One point: the cold bath temperature felt too mild, which was very disappointing for me as someone who loves saunas. Also, although there is space for outdoor cooling down, nothing seems to have been done with it. If the sauna flow and facilities were improved, I expect satisfaction among male sauna enthusiasts would increase significantly. Even considering these negatives, this place had great appeal. Having an environment where you can always drink draft beer for free is irreplaceable. I think we will use it again. Thank you.

In any case, avoid peak periods.

We were very satisfied last year, so we visited again this year. First, we heard it gets extremely crowded during peak seasons such as summer vacation, so our family always visits outside those periods (since it’s just adults). The front desk staff also told us that dining is less busy later in the evening, so if you make a Reservation at that time via the QR code (and in the morning as well, checking crowd levels and reserving via the QR code), you can use the restaurant smoothly. I think this system is excellent. The buffet offers a wide variety of dishes and everything is delicious. This time we stayed in a Japanese-style room on the mountain side, but we could still see the ocean, so it was no problem at all! We also enjoyed views of the ocean and the Naruto Bridge even from the elevator hall. We’d love to come back next year for another relaxing staycation.

    Relax in the Onsen

Both the breakfast and dinner buffets were excellent. The app for reserving dining seats was also convenient. I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.

    After retirement

Traveling with my wife is what we enjoy most right now. We decided to mainly stay at Mercure Hotel properties, and our trips to Daisen (two trips ago), Miyazu (last time), and Awaji (this time) were all comfortable and enjoyable. Since we travel by car, after checking in, our biggest pleasure is the all-inclusive free drinks. The local dishes in each area are also delicious. Maybe Wakayama next time!

    Japanese-Style Futon Mattress

The futon mattress in the Japanese-style Room was quite firm and not very comfortable. When I woke up in the morning, my lower back pain had gotten worse. Other than that, we were very satisfied overall, so next time we plan to choose a Room with beds. However, families with small children may still prefer a Japanese-style Room, so we hope the futon mattress can be improved.

    Satisfying Buffet

I wasn’t expecting much from the buffet, but the DIY shabu-shabu was delicious—perfect with Awaji Island sliced onions and ponzu sauce. The sashimi was fresh, and there was a great variety of desserts. Buffets inevitably lose some quality over time, but it felt like the chefs were constantly sharing feedback and making improvements to keep guests satisfied. It was heartwarming to see a young couple at the next table enjoying their meal so much and eating plenty while saying how tasty everything was. I’d love to visit again when the season changes.

    Summer Vacation with My Grandchild

The Hotel was spacious, clean, and very nice. Check-in was quick, and even though there was a line, it moved fast so it didn’t bother me. Since it was summer vacation there were a lot of guests, so some crowding was unavoidable, but the food service kept everything replenished without running out, which I appreciated. However, the guidance at the pool entrance and from the staff on patrol (part-time staff?), as well as the breakfast instructions—during busy times, the QR code process wasn’t explained clearly enough. I was turned away because it was full, and only then told to scan the QR code; that made the wait longer and delayed our departure. Above all, the male staff member at reception in the breakfast area had a bad attitude. He spoke with a smirk and it left me feeling uncomfortable. Also, maybe because they were cheap toothbrushes, bristles started falling out while I was brushing. Even if they’re disposable, I’d like them to provide better ones. The game corner seems to have been renovated, but the claw machines are impossible to win—please make them more playable.

The Room name should be changed.

We stayed as a family of four (a couple with children) and prioritized Room size, choosing the “Classic Junior Suite Japanese-Western Room” instead of a renovated Room. - The bathroom sink area and toilet floors were soft and sinking, with loud creaking noises. - The toilet had old-fashioned restroom slippers. - The low table in front of the sofa was sticky and badly worn. - Several cables from the wall-mounted TV were hanging down under the TV. - The Room air conditioner could not be temperature-controlled—only a fan-speed dial—and it was extremely noisy. - We received only one thin bath towel per person, and had to bring it to both the pool and the public bath. The only good points were the view and the size of the Room. Overall, the Room was in very poor condition, and I can’t believe this Hotel calls it a “Junior Suite.” It felt like they are not seriously addressing anything until renovation. I genuinely think staff should pay out of pocket to stay here themselves. The free-flow lounge was basically like a family restaurant drink bar. In one corner of the lobby/corridors there were also worn-out tables and chairs. Would families with small children really be satisfied? In any case, the lounge, pool, baths, and buffet were all overcrowded. The staff also seemed overwhelmed. This was my first Grand Mercure stay, but I won’t use other Mercure properties in the future either.

    The Best Mercure Ever

As stated in the title, I have stayed at Mercure group Hotels in Miyazu, Kushimoto, and Lake Hamana three times over the past two years, and this was my fourth stay. The staff service was the best so far. In particular, I stayed on the last Saturday of the summer holidays, and the Hotel was as crowded as a busy city scramble crossing. Even so, the staff guided guests smoothly using LINE on their mobile phones. Although we were called much later than our Reservation time, I did not feel uncomfortable. I felt this system is very good. The food also seemed better than at other group properties (maybe just my imagination). At a Hotel where I stayed previously, some guests started drinking in front of the beer server and it became difficult to pour alcohol for a while. This time, even though it was Saturday, there was truly no stress when taking food or pouring beer, which was great. The sauna temperature in the bath area was good; however, five floor towels are definitely not enough when there are many users—some people had to stand and wait for a place to sit—so this should be improved immediately. Also, since the cold bath is at room temperature, I think you should provide users with properly cold water after using the sauna. There are no convenience stores around the Hotel so it’s not easy to go shopping right away; I would like you to lower vending machine prices. A canned beer for 400 yen after a morning bath is too expensive. I wrote various points above, but when I visit Awaji Island again, I will definitely use your Accommodation again. P.S. I plan to visit Mercure Nagahama in December.

    This was my first st...

This was my first stay. Since the meals were buffet-style, I didn’t have high expectations, but there was a wide variety of dishes. Everything tasted great, and I was very satisfied. It’s a Hotel I would like to stay at again.

    Family Trip

It was a bit disappointing that the Room washroom is a 3-piece unit. Having to exchange towels at the front desk each time was inconvenient; it would have been nice if towels were available at the large public bath. For the number of guest rooms, there are only three elevators, and during busy times we sometimes couldn’t get on and had to wait over 10 minutes. The buffet ingredients were delicious, and our child was thrilled—we ate until we were full.

Hmm… something like that, I guess.

This was our family’s annual summer trip. Since it’s an all-inclusive resort Accommodation during the summer holidays, I expected some of this to a certain extent… but for the sake of future guests and possible improvements by the Hotel, here are a few points. - The Room was well cleaned, and with a good location and view, it was comfortable. - The baths include indoor and open-air baths, plus a sauna and cold bath, which is great… but even going late, it was packed with families with children, so there was no chance to relax at all. After the sauna, the cold bath had basically turned into a kids’ pool—terrible. - The food itself was delicious with plenty of dishes and nice presentation, but because too many guests were squeezed in, even the food ended up messy and unappealing. - The lounge system—supposedly one of the biggest attractions of an all-inclusive Accommodation for adults—was honestly awful. Despite having a kids’ lounge, the adult lounge was also crowded with families. Children were running wild until late at night, spilling drinks on tables; and the drip tray under the drink dispenser overflowed with spilled beverages and felt unhygienic. In short, this summer trip ended without being able to say it was an excellent all-inclusive resort Accommodation. It was our first time staying at Grand Mercure, so this was very disappointing.

    Summer Vacation

Because it was a summer vacation weekend, there were many families and every area was very crowded, which was unavoidable for the season. The room was very clean, and we had a comfortable stay at the Hotel.

    Summer Memories Across Three Generations

I used this Hotel for the first time because I wanted to create summer memories for my grandchildren. The pool and the buffet-style meals were a big hit with the kids. The adults were also very satisfied with the drinks in the lounge at night and the alcohol served at dinner. There were many dishes made with local ingredients, and everything was delicious. However, the changing room for using the pool was quite small, so I hope it can be improved… Since only guests use it, I thought it would be nice if children could simply walk from their Room to the pool in their swimsuits. There were many families with young children, and I think it’s an ideal Hotel for families.

    Not reusable.

It was far too crowded to relax. The building smelled musty, and the walls are thin, so noise echoes through the rooms and it was noisy throughout our stay. Both the pool and the changing room were small, which was very disappointing. I made a Reservation trusting IKYU, but considering the price, this Accommodation was extremely disappointing. I will not stay here again.

All-inclusive may not be necessary for families with children.

We stayed in a mountain-side classic Room, but it may have been renovated—the Room was very clean. Service was average. The food was definitely better than at Ooedo Onsen Monogatari. The activities were underwhelming, and the kids’ lounge was also disappointing. The Onsen was quite good, and the Onsen lounge is the top recommendation. The pool is a letdown: the changing room is dirty, and there’s mud around the poolside. Even with parasols, it feels like there’s no shade at all. I don’t understand why only that area is so dirty. Since you can’t bring food or drinks from the lounge back to your Room, it’s hard for couples with kids to relax together in the lounge, so all-inclusive didn’t feel necessary for us. The food tasted great, but I’d rather have fewer items with higher quality—more Awaji Island–focused dishes would make me want to return. Also, the hair dryer in the Room was excellent—that alone might be a big plus for women (lol). Overall, not quite “amazing,” but still good—just a slightly disappointing Hotel that could be even better.

    The meals are delicious.

The lounge and the meals were delicious, and I was very satisfied. However, since the lounge cannot be used on the day of departure, I would be even happier if there were a service offering coffee and small snacks—such as sweets or light nibbles—before or after check-out. Also, the souvenir shop was not open when we were leaving, so if you plan to buy souvenirs at check-out, you may end up not being able to. If it were open during check-out hours as well, I think more guests would purchase souvenirs. Overall, I am very satisfied, and I would be happy if things continue to improve even further.

    My expectations were too high...

I first saw it on TikTok and have been looking forward to coming this summer for the past six months. Grand Mercure Awaji Island at last! The food was amazing, and the baths were wonderful—I truly enjoyed a luxurious time. However… it was summer vacation season, and almost everyone around us was traveling with family. The pool was so crowded with parents and kids that it felt packed like sardines. I brought a swimsuit but gave up and didn’t go in. In my imagination, I’d be sipping champagne by the pool in the evening breeze. And at night, the lounge was also full of children. It wasn’t quite the quiet, relaxed time for just the two of us as a couple, so I felt we chose the wrong season. That said, I think it’s perfect for families.

    It’s hot inside the building.

The air conditioning inside the Hotel didn’t work very well, so it felt hot overall. The pool was crowded, and it felt more like relaxing in the water than swimming. There were events such as festival-style games, and the children really enjoyed them. It was also nice that the atmosphere was relaxed enough that we didn’t have to worry too much even if the kids got a bit noisy. There was a wide variety of food, and everything was delicious and satisfying. Overall, we were very satisfied with the meals, and I think it’s a Hotel that’s easy for families to use.

    My body ached.

We stayed for one night on July 24–25 with our grandchildren’s family. It was a hot time of year, but we could enjoy our favorite drinks in the lounge and quench our thirst. They were also very happy to use the pool. Above all, the view was wonderful. We really liked the location, with easy access to major sightseeing spots. The meals were buffet-style, and even with picky eaters there were plenty of options, so the children could choose what they liked as well. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. Both Rooms were Japanese-style, but the futon mattresses were thin and there was no mattress pad, so my body hurt. This is one area that could be improved.

I want to stay here again.

All staff provided excellent service and spoke in a way that suited our children as well. The all-inclusive plan was great, and there were plenty of other in-Hotel events too—so much that we didn’t have enough time after check-in. The other guests were also pleasant, and since there were no inconsiderate foreign visitors like those often talked about lately, everyone followed basic manners and rules with the all-inclusive plan and we could enjoy our stay comfortably. It was a shame there were no razors, but it was so good that it didn’t matter. If I have the chance to visit the southern part of Awaji Island again, I would like to stay here again.

    Second one.

Dates of stay: Thursday, Friday Number of guests: 5 (2 elementary school children, 1 toddler) We stayed at the Mercure in Miyazu, Kyoto last time. The summer pool was a big help. There was also a shallow pool, which was perfect for our toddler’s first time in a pool. Since there were many guests, there weren’t enough lockers, so changing clothes in the crowded area was a bit difficult. Breakfast is available from 6:30 a.m., but by 7:00 a.m. there is usually a wait. You need to use a QR code to make a Reservation. The kids enjoyed the food. It was also helpful that there were meals for toddlers, high chairs, and disposable bibs. Changing for the pool takes some effort, but overall we were satisfied.

The dining options are on a whole different level.

I was amazed at how much more substantial everything was compared with a typical Hotel—the lounge time, the buffet-style dinner, and the breakfast the next morning. However, we ate a bit too much and ended up with a queue for the toilet in our family Room, so we needed to use an outside restroom. There wasn’t a shared restroom on our accommodation floor, so we had to take the elevator down to the ground floor, which was a little inconvenient. Normally we wouldn’t eat that much like this—so it was really our own fault.

    Summer Vacation

We stayed for one night during our summer vacation trip. We came mainly for the pool, but there were so many events and fun activities for kids throughout the property that one night was nowhere near enough! Everyone was so kind to our children, and they were very happy—they keep saying they want to come back again (lol). When we visit Awaji Island again, we would love to stay here again!!

Our third stay at Grand Mercure Awaji Island

This year, we stayed here as a couple during the daffodil season in February, and again in July with our grandchild (the three of us). The pool was open from July, and perhaps from being tired from playing, our grandchild fell asleep without eating much. At first, in the restaurant’s kids’ area, they used tongs to put popcorn into a cup and started eating at the table, but it didn’t really count as a meal. I would have liked a menu that lets children enjoy the buffet on their own while also having a nutritious dinner. I also think the popcorn should be placed where adults serve themselves rather than within children’s reach. Other than that, we had a wonderful time. Thank you very much.

Perhaps because it’s summer vacation, this Hotel has many families with children.

Since my child still can’t serve themselves, having buffet meals both at dinner and breakfast felt a bit of a hassle. However, we were very satisfied with the buffet selection and the alcoholic drinks! The pool was extremely crowded, but we still enjoyed it. For some reason, there was a crab in the open-air bath. The view from the Room was also great.

Thank you for taking care of us during our summer vacation. The Room was clean, and the view was amazing. There was a wide variety of food, and we really enjoyed it. Since the outdoor pool was quite busy, we wished the changing room had been a bit larger. It was a trip we had been looking forward to, and thanks to you it became a wonderful memory—thank you very much.
