    Savor the rich culinary delights of Wakasa.

    The meals were simply delicious. We were able to fully enjoy the best of Fukui, starting with locally caught fish. As a fan of traditional Japanese houses, I loved how this Accommodation preserved its classic exterior, stairs, beams, and pillars while also offering an open, glass-walled dining area, modern water facilities, and a lounge in the storehouse—making the stay itself truly enjoyable. The only slight inconvenience was the raised bed in the ocean-view main building twin room. When going to the bathroom at night, it felt unsafe not being able to see my footing, so I slept with the alcove light on—but since I usually sleep without lights, it was a bit too bright and made it hard to fall asleep. There is also no switch near the bed to turn off the lights, so if everything is turned off completely, it’s difficult to find your way back to bed in the dark. Younger guests may not mind, but if you’re used to barrier-free living like I am, even small steps can be hazardous. I think adding something like indirect lighting would make it even more comfortable.

    One Night in Anō Bay

    About a 20-minute taxi ride from Obama Station to Ano Bay. A small cove dotted with aquaculture rafts for fugu and madai. The sea view from the main building is truly soothing. Moonlight shimmering on the water and a sky full of stars. With Wakasa’s abundant local ingredients, the meals never disappoint. We were told that Fukui is the birthplace of Koshihikari rice, and we agreed—its glossy, kettle-cooked deliciousness made perfect sense. So much food that older guests may not be able to finish it all! Aside from not having an Onsen and no elevator, all staff were courteous and kind, doing their very best to help us.

    I was thrilled to try Wakasa guji for the first time.

    Even though I don’t swim in the sea, I travel solo year-round in search of gourmet Accommodations near the coast (for the food and scenery). I was delighted to be upgraded to a sea-view Room. It was a Japanese-style Room, but it also had a leather sofa and ottoman, so I could stretch out and relax while gazing at the ocean. When I woke up around 5:00, I was able to watch a beautiful sunrise from the Room. There is a calm inner-sea beach right in front of the Accommodation, and there are showers as well—great for families with small children. The meals were outstanding, featuring an abundance of local specialties. My main goal was Wakasa-guji (tilefish), but it was even more delicious than I imagined—the Wakasa-guji ochazuke was exceptional. And the Matsunaga rice was unbelievably good (probably the best I’ve ever had). I didn’t use the public bath and used the shower in my Room instead, but I loved that the shampoo and conditioner were Hokurokusousui—one of my favorite brands—and it helped me relax. Recently there have been more Accommodations renovated from wooden buildings, but some noise—voices and footsteps—is unavoidable. You can often hear children as well. It’s not exactly quiet. However, more than making up for that, I felt each staff member’s hospitality and way of interacting with guests was wonderful. In particular: the woman with glasses who assisted me at check-in; the woman at breakfast (I’m sorry—I forgot your name); and one of the male staff members who kindly gave me helpful advice for sightseeing in Obama after check-out. Thanks to them, it became more than just an overnight stay—I had a chance to learn even more about Obama, making this trip extremely satisfying. I heard that midwinter is especially good for grouper, pufferfish, and Echizen crab. As transportation access improves from here on out, this will be an Accommodation you’ll want to visit even more. Next time it would be perfect if I could borrow a firmer pillow!! Please make that happen on my next visit!! (I can’t sleep if a pillow doesn’t suit me.)     I’m glad I stayed here.

    We arrived before check-in, and while we waited in the lounge, drinks such as beer were complimentary. The local craft beer was excellent. Before dinner, we used the private annex bath, which was also wonderful. Both dinner and breakfast featured plenty of local ingredients and were delicious—there was more than we could finish, and we were completely satisfied. The sake was great as well. Beyond the food, the staff’s hospitality was outstanding. We even made a Reservation that same night for crab season.

    We had a wonderful time.

    I saw Wakasa Kabi featured in “Hokuriku Monogatari,” published by JR, and from that moment I knew I wanted to stay here someday. This time, my daughter and I visited to celebrate my birthday, and everything was wonderful—from the Room, to the lounge we were shown to, the dining area, the meals, and the staff’s hospitality. It was one moving experience after another. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    A Refreshing Retreat

    A beautifully renovated Accommodation that makes the most of wood. The Room is best enjoyed barefoot. The meals were carefully and deliciously prepared using local ingredients from the sea right in front of you—I enjoyed every bite. Even in the bath, the soothing scent of wood was wonderful. Every staff member greeted me with a kind smile, no matter what I asked or how many mistakes I made. With no TV, I spent all day gazing at the ocean and fell asleep to the sound of the waves. It felt truly rejuvenating.

    This was our first s...

    This was our first stay, with four guests aged 62 to 88. The meals were outstanding, and the tableware and presentation were beautiful. There was a great variety of dishes featuring local specialties—such as fish-based broth dishes and sashimi—and everything was delicious. The Room felt reasonably sized for four people. That said, we couldn’t help feeling that the amenities and bathing facilities were somewhat inconvenient. We understand this may be unavoidable given the traditional house-style design, but features such as the outdoor stairs, locking/unlocking doors, and one-size slippers did not feel suitable for older guests. The bath is small, but its design felt like a framed landscape painting—very unique—and we all commented on how stylish and modern it felt. The lounge was nice, but again quite small. Also, both the lounge and bath had shorter opening hours than a typical Ryokan (opening later and closing earlier), so as early risers we were disappointed to have nowhere to spend time in the morning. Since the baths rotate daily, we planned to use it in the morning, but it opened at 7:00; with breakfast at 7:30 and departure at 8:20, we unfortunately couldn’t use it. We can accept that there is no TV in the Room, but without something specific to do, there was a lot of downtime. Near the entrance walkway (understandably since it’s next door), seeing old towels and laundry hanging out took away from the atmosphere a bit. This Accommodation clearly reflects an SDGs-minded approach—avoiding unnecessary items where possible, encouraging guests to do what they can themselves, reducing waste—so it may be better suited to younger travelers. That said, all of the staff were young overall and seemed to be working very hard. If you stay here with a clear understanding of what this Accommodation offers, I think it can be an excellent place.     Honest feedback

    I was satisfied with the staff service and the food, but in my personal opinion, this Accommodation is not suitable for elderly guests due to the facilities (the bath is outdoors and requires a Reservation, there are few handrails on stairs, there is no TV in the Room, and I was dissatisfied with items such as chairs) and the stay system (operations must be done on a smartphone). I think these features should be clearly explained in advance as part of the Accommodation information. Unfortunately, it diminished what could have been a great memory of the delicious food.

    An Accommodation You’ll Want to Visit in Every Season

    I booked with hopes of the clear skies unique to this season, but it turned out to be a light drizzle… Still, just as the Accommodation staff said, “Rather than a sparkling, dazzling sea, I prefer the pale blue-green like today,” the more subdued, mature-toned ocean was wonderful in its own way. The ocean-view Room on the second floor of the main building was truly lovely. Even without a TV, we could relax and chat in the lounge or read in our Room, savoring the quietly passing time with all five senses. And the cuisine at this Accommodation—each dish was carefully prepared, and everything was so delicious it felt like we were dining at a kaiseki restaurant in Kyoto. Most of the staff were young to mid-career, but everyone provided warm hospitality and pleasant service. If I had to mention any drawbacks: at dinner, sake could only be ordered by the glass or by a 4-go bottle (720 ml). For my husband who loves sake and wanted to try different kinds, a glass was too small—he wished 1-go servings were available. Also, because the outdoor bath is separate from the building, you get wet on rainy days unless you use an umbrella; it would be appreciated if there were some kind of roof (personally, I was happy that the shampoo/conditioner/body soap provided were from Hokureisousui—I love them!). Overall, this is an Accommodation I would highly recommend for an adults-only detox getaway. We’d love to visit again in another season. Thank you for such a wonderful time.

    Time to do nothing

    We were truly satisfied with the relaxing time and the luxurious farm-to-table cuisine made with local ingredients. The staff were exceptionally kind and attentive, and it was an Accommodation we would love to visit again as a couple. They also provided Shuttle Service on our way back and even took us to the roadside station we wanted to visit—we are deeply grateful. Thank you very much.

    A soothing Accommodation well worth the trip

    Once you stay here, you’ll see why—this Accommodation offers service that exceeds its price. There aren’t many rooms, so neither the baths nor the lounge ever felt crowded, making it extremely comfortable. Dining was completely stress-free, and the food, service, and timing of each course were all perfect. Every staff member was genuinely pleasant and welcoming. I’d love to return if I have the chance.

    A truly wonderful place.

    It was a wonderful Accommodation. The meals and baths were just as highly rated. Thanks to their thoughtful consideration of ingredients I can’t eat, the food was even more enjoyable, and the baths—especially the semi-open-air bath—offered a great sense of openness. On the terrace, I relaxed with a Wakasa beer in hand while taking in the spectacular view. Above all, the staff were outstanding; they answered even small questions clearly and thoroughly, which allowed me to keep enjoying my trip even after leaving the Accommodation. They incorporate the best of Wakasa beautifully, and it truly felt like they value the entire local area. I’ve stayed at many places with my pet, but this one feels truly one of a kind. I’d love to return in another season.

    Worthy of being the number one Hotel you want to visit.

    I went to Obama because I wanted to meet former President Obama. (Honestly, I really wanted to visit Wakasa Kajitsu.) The Room we stayed in this time was in the annex, on the top (4th) floor. From the corner Room windows, you can see both the sea and the neighborhood houses clearly. Since it was renovated from a former long-established Ryokan’s large public bath, the living area of Room 401 features a table and sofa shaped like an overturned bathtub. The actual bathtub is tucked further inside—an art-like space with exposed concrete. This time we used the separate-building large public bath “Uchitomi,” so next time I’d love to try the in-room bath as well. The large public bath is just a short walk from the Room, with floors 1 and 2 alternating between men and women. The semi-open-air bath on the 2nd floor is especially stylish—please try it in the morning or at night (ideally all to yourself). Dinner was the “Seasonal Kaiseki Yayoi” course. The appetizer featured “Kumagawa kudzu usui-tofu” topped with sake-simmered white turban shell, and “sansai with fuki-miso,” whose pleasant bitterness was pure bliss. The soup was comforting clam shinjo. Sashimi included fresh Wakasa grouper, meji tuna, flounder, and spear squid—perfectly capturing Wakasa. The hassun platter was abundant: tai chigusa-yose from Miketsukuni cuisine, tender simmered abalone, fava beans, firefly squid, castella-style egg omelet, ebi-imo taro dressed with aonori seaweed powder, yama-udo tofu-skin roll (shida-maki), and more. The grilled dish was genuine Spanish mackerel yu-an-yaki served with yama-udo kinpira. For palate refreshment there was sasa-kodai sushi with kogomi tempura. The sushi portion was quite large—I started worrying about how full I’d be afterward. Next came lily-root manju with fluffy steamed lily root inside. The main hot pot was “Wakasa beef and Wakasa wakame scented with sansho” (with Yatabe green onion, burdock root, mizuna greens, and log-grown shiitake). No worries—I finished it easily. Rice was springlike bamboo-shoot rice—pure happiness at its peak. Don’t forget dessert featuring Takahama strawberries and Setoka citrus. Breakfast is Japanese-style cuisine that lets you feel “the morning of Wakasa Kajitsu.” Local specialties like soy-marinated dried mackerel (“saba shoyu-boshi”) and lightly salted Wakasa flounder (“Wakasa karei issio”) make it dangerously easy to keep eating rice. Side dishes included lightly seared heshiko (fermented mackerel), blanched vegetables in dashi dressing (ohitashi), grilled-and-soaked Obama atsuage tofu (yaki-bitashi), Chikuzen-ni simmered vegetables, dashimaki tamago rolled omelet, simmered hijiki seaweed—plus scooped tofu (“kumiage tofu”) and a green salad piled high. Everything paired perfectly with rice as well. For dessert: yogurt topped with Wakasa strawberry sauce. An outstanding location; an innovative Room design; beautifully prepared dishes using local ingredients; staff members whose smiles are wonderful—it’s only natural you’ll want to come back. I’ll be returning again soon.

    A Memorable Dining Table

    We visited by rental car based on Reviews. The full-course fugu meal was so delicious it moved our whole family. On top of that, the dessert came with a wonderful birthday message plate we had requested in advance, and everyone kept saying “Amazing!” as we took photo after photo. The delicate hand-drawn floral design in chocolate and jam looked like professional artwork, beautifully arranged with colorful fruit and cake; it felt almost too beautiful to eat, but we enjoyed every bite and finished it all. The lounge also offered free drinks and snacks, which the men especially appreciated. In our Room, the sound of the waves was wonderfully soothing, making this Accommodation truly comfortable and memorable. We sincerely thank the staff for their thoughtful hospitality.

    Wakasa Sazanami

    With the Hokuriku Shinkansen now extended to Tsuruga, Fukui feels closer than ever! I took a local train for about an hour from Tsuruga to Obama, eager to see Wakasa Bay. I had requested the Shuttle Service to Wakasaka-bi, and during the roughly 15-minute ride from the station to the Accommodation, they kindly explained everything from Obama’s geography and climate to the concept of the Accommodation—building my excitement even more. To be honest, my first impression upon arrival was, “Huh… is this really it?” But once I stepped through the noren curtain and into the lobby/dining area, I was truly moved by the breathtaking view of Wakasa Bay and the surrounding mountains. The view from my second-floor Room was also wonderful. Falling asleep with the soothing sound of waves by my pillow was a delight. The amenities were minimal yet more than sufficient, and there were tasteful complimentary drinks as well. The absence of both a TV and a phone gave it a refreshingly intentional feel. Dinner featured simple yet carefully prepared dishes centered on local ingredients. Everything—from heshiko (fermented mackerel) to fugu aspic—was as delicious as I had hoped, but I was especially impressed by the freshly harvested spring wakame served with Wakasa beef shabu-shabu. Breakfast was equally comforting: Wakasa flounder, soy-marinated mackerel, and rice cooked in an Iga-yaki clay pot… such a warming start to the day. Both dinner and breakfast were made even more enjoyable thanks to the attentive service throughout. On our way back to the station via Shuttle Service, they even stopped at a roadside station so I could pick up some souvenirs. For elderly guests or anyone with mobility concerns, moving between areas such as the bathhouse, Rooms, and an annex lounge is not fully barrier-free—this was my only slight disappointment. Still, it’s definitely an Accommodation I’d love to return to while I’m still able-bodied.

    Spectacular Views & Gourmet Dining

    I deliberately chose the meal plan at this Accommodation. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mahata dishes. I was also able to watch the sunrise from my Room balcony. An Accommodation worthy of IKYU.

    Seasonal Special Kaiseki Featuring Crab and Fugu (Pufferfish)

    We booked the seasonal special kaiseki featuring crab and pufferfish. We stayed at a slightly discounted rate through IKYU, but for this price, the food and service felt disappointing. There was no blanket in the Room and no spare pillow. If the entire building is not heated floors, slippers would be appreciated. When we informed them of items we could not eat or drink, that was the end of it. (At other Accommodations, even when notified on the day, they offered alternatives.) The staff were courteous and the food was delicious, which made it all the more disappointing.

    The crab and pufferfish are outstanding!

    The winter delicacies—crab and fugu—were truly outstanding. The crab was sweet and packed with meat, and the fugu, both as sashimi and in the hot pot, had an elegant flavor that impressed us. You can really feel the quality of the ingredients and the careful preparation. The staff were warm and attentive, and we were able to enjoy our meal at a relaxed pace in a calm setting. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again in another season. The Room was also comfortable, with a beautiful view of the sea. The weather wasn’t great this time, so it would be perfect if we could see the sunrise on our next visit.

    Fuguversary

    A culinary journey from Wakasa to Toyama Bay: Enjoy fugu, winter yellowtail, and Echizen crab. On the first day, we stayed with a fugu course meal. The serene atmosphere and exceptional service were truly satisfying, and the grilled fugu at dinner was so delightful it left us speechless. It became an unforgettable "Fugiversary" for us!

    Enjoyed Wakasa pufferfish!

    The fugu sashimi was slightly thicker, allowing us to enjoy the texture and flavor of the fugu. The fugu hot pot, combined with local vegetables, was a gentle and comforting dish. To finish, we had rice porridge made from the remaining broth, completing a satisfying dinner. With floor heating available, we stayed warm and comfortable even during the cold end-of-year season.

    It was a disaster.

    The room had no windows that could open and was on the 4th floor with only stairs. The crab served at meals was small and disappointing. Service was lacking, and we were misled by the location and photos. Expecting too much was a mistake. The bath was small, not an Onsen, and it turned into an unpleasant trip for my wife, which was very disappointing.

    A wonderful accommodation!

    Obama is a city with many delicious foods, and I love it, but there used to be no good accommodations! On my recent visit to Obama, I found an accommodation that makes me want to come back again. The food was delicious, the room was comfortable, and I enjoyed a relaxing beer in the lounge. Obama is still a hidden gem with few tourists!

    The smiling service of the young staff was pleasant. The food was delicious and satisfying. However, both the Room's bath and the large public bath were a bit small, which was disappointing.

    With Fugu Kaiseki

    I visited to enjoy Wakasa fugu. While most of the dining staff kindly came around to serve dishes directly to my side, a newer staff member? served with their back stretched out, which was surprising and took away from the experience. The breakfast rice cooked in an earthen pot was delicious, but when I asked for more after it ran out, I was told that was all. It might not be enough for men with bigger appetites.

    The sky and sea view...

    The sky and sea view from the large window in Room 401 were stunning. We were blessed with great weather, and the window felt like a screen showcasing breathtaking scenery! Watching the sunrise was also beautiful, leaving us completely satisfied! We could gaze at it forever! As mentioned in reviews, the meals were truly delicious. We chose the Wakasa beef kaiseki course and enjoyed steak, meat sushi, and shabu-shabu with exquisite beef. The seafood and autumn flavors were also exceptional! The staff were friendly, making our stay very comfortable. The room design was quite enjoyable too! I heard that their fugu is outstanding, so I’d love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    The expectations mig...

    The expectations might have been too high. The service quality varied greatly among staff, ranging from very friendly to completely unapproachable with no sense of hospitality. Although we were told not to drain the bathwater in the guestroom as it was being circulated, there seemed to be some kind of oily residue floating in the tub, so we ended up not using it. The meals were reasonably tasty. As an accommodation located right by the sea, it's an excellent spot for summer beach trips. While it's not a private beach, it wasn't crowded and we enjoyed our time there peacefully. However, it felt like the experience did not match the price paid.

    Wonderful Accommodation

    I stayed with my daughter, and the experience was wonderful. The staff provided excellent service and greeted us with warm smiles. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious. The outdoor bath was stylish and very clean. The lounge, utilizing a traditional storehouse, was exceptional. I would love to stay here again!

    Stunning View

    I decided to stay after falling in love at first sight with the images of Room 301 on IKYU.com. The breathtaking view of the ocean from both the bed and the bath was stunning, and since it wasn’t an Onsen, I could enjoy a long soak without feeling fatigued. The meals were delightful, featuring plenty of fresh local seafood for both dinner and breakfast. The lounge service was excellent, and I used it several times during my stay. However, one minor inconvenience was that as a renovated accommodation, the room, large public bath, front desk, and lounge are all in separate buildings, making moving around a bit troublesome. On that day it was hot and started raining midway through my stay; plus my room was on the third floor accessible only by stairs—this made me feel it even more. That said, this is such a charming accommodation utilizing an old building beautifully; you just have to embrace these aspects as part of its charm! I’d love to visit again in another season.
