    Disappointing Dinner

    This was my second stay. The dinner was very delicious last time, so I came back. However, the dinner was disappointing. The sashimi was only bonito, and I was shocked because I had expected 3 or 5 items to be provided. The sushi was also just one piece of tuna, which was another disappointment.

    An Accommodation that honors its producers

    Thank you from the bottom of my heart. There was only one reason I came to Shirahama: To stay at Kuroshio Sou. When people think of Shirahama, many picture the sea and resorts. But what I found here was Wakayama itself. What moved me most at this Accommodation was not only how outstanding the food was. It was Head Chef Etani’s exceptional skill, and his deep respect for the producers who support every single dish. Fishermen. Farmers. Brewers. Roasters. And the artisans who continue to protect Japan’s fermentation culture. The moment I saw the map of producers introduced alongside the meal, I understood what this Accommodation truly values. Through the cuisine, you encounter not only ingredients, but also the people behind them and Wakayama’s climate and character. I was especially impressed by how delicious the soy sauce and Kinzanji miso were at dinner. When I asked about them, I learned they were from Horigawaya Nomura—a producer with over 350 years of history that still preserves traditional craftsmanship using firewood-heated iron kettles—making both their soy sauce and Kinzanji miso in that way today as well. I had originally planned to visit a different soy sauce brewery, but heavy rain made it impossible. Sometimes, the places you cannot reach end up guiding you to the story you were truly meant to find. For me, Kuroshio Sou was exactly that kind of place. The wonderful Onsen gently healed not only my body, but my mind as well. The quiet comfort throughout the building, Chef Etani’s cuisine, and the hospitality of all staff— together they quietly express this Accommodation’s philosophy in everything it does。 As a former chef from Tasmania, there is something I felt deeply: True hospitality is not just serving delicious food; it is helping guests connect with the people and culture that sustain a place。 I now have one more reason to return to Wakayama。 Thank you again from my heart.

    Whenever I come to “Kuroshio Sou,” I feel at ease.

    Upon arrival, soaking in the hot bath with a beer in hand was a blissful moment that melted all my tension away. At dinner, the salted, hand-rubbed cucumber served with today’s sashimi had an outstanding texture and was delicious. Breakfast felt a little less satisfying than usual… is that just me? It’s a quiet, relaxing Accommodation. Thank you for taking care of us.

    It was a great accommodation.

    We stayed for one night in the 2nd-floor Corner Junior Suite with a semi-open-air bath. The road near the Accommodation is narrow and you can’t pass oncoming cars, so we were a bit nervous about whether anyone would come from ahead. Since the area isn’t very touristy, such a lovely Accommodation suddenly appears, which I think will surprise many guests.\nThe welcome was greeted with wonderful smiles, and all the staff were young; everyone was polite and attentive, so we had a very pleasant stay. First, at the front desk: it has large glass windows and a great view. We were served tea and sweets, which helped ease our driving fatigue before heading to our Room.\nThe low bed is stylish. After relaxing on the sofa in the sunken tatami area, we used the private bath (available to rent by the hour). There was something like yunohana mineral deposits that left our skin feeling silky smooth! We also used the public bath twice—at night and in the morning. It was clean, and both the head shower and hair dryer were ReFa products, which matched the Accommodation’s atmosphere perfectly.\nFor dinner, I especially loved the wild boar hot pot (I think it was boar?). The counter seating had a great view as well; with drinks flowing, time passed quickly. Breakfast was delicious too—I was completely full and satisfied.\nOne small issue: it was very bright in the morning. It didn’t look like there were blackout curtains—was there some way to make it darker? I forgot to ask at check-out… If there is a way for future guests to avoid being woken by brightness, please let them know at check-in.\nThank you very much for taking care of us.

    A stylish Accommodation where you can enjoy locally sourced cuisine

    We stayed here as a gift trip for my parents. The road to the Hotel was quite narrow, so we weren’t sure we were going the right way, but as soon as we arrived the staff welcomed us with warm smiles, which immediately put us at ease. From the outside, it felt like an older Hotel and showed some signs of age, but once inside it was a stylish, calming Japanese-modern space. From our Room on higher ground, we enjoyed an open view, and the bath was spacious and relaxing. The size was just right, and we could unwind comfortably like at home. It’s a wonderful Room overall; however, there were many steps inside the Room, and I tripped and got a small scrape. It’s not an issue if you’re careful, but I think older guests may need to take extra caution. The meals featured locally sourced ingredients, and every dish was thoughtfully prepared and delicious. In particular, the wild boar had no odor at all—it was amazing. Thanks to the wonderful service from the staff, my parents were truly happy. Thank you very much. We’d love to visit again with our family if we have another chance.

    What a waste...

    Thank you very much for your hospitality. The meals, Facility, and amenities were all five stars. Time passed slowly and peacefully—it was wonderful. What we liked: The staff’s smiles. They were very considerate toward us, which made us feel comfortable. Everything provided was top quality, and it was impressive how thoroughly the “Sou” logo was printed on every item. What concerned us a little: There were brown particles floating in the bath, and it didn’t feel like natural mineral deposits. Also, the flowers in the lobby had withered. The hair dryer in the bath area was from a premium brand, but the air intake was full of dust—such a waste… The step inside the Room felt a bit tough for our age… As a personal thought, I feel it could be even better if there were an older staff member like me (lol). I’ve written some small details, but in conclusion, this Accommodation is one we’d like to stay at again.

    It was a wonderful stay. Above all, the staff’s thoughtful care was incredibly attentive, and I was able to spend a truly relaxing time beyond what I had imagined. Thank you very much. The meals and sweets made with plenty of local ingredients were absolutely delicious, and it really came through how much you value Wakayama—along with your connections to the local community. The original neighborhood map you created was also very appealing, and we used it to visit many places before and after our stay! When visiting somewhere unfamiliar, being able to experience the area in so many ways thanks to an Accommodation’s creative efforts is something I truly appreciate. To be honest, I would love to stay for a longer period, take my time walking around on my own feet, feeling the place, and simply enjoying each day—but in reality that isn’t always possible. Even within limited time, this stay allowed us to relax with someone important while also experiencing the destination through so many thoughtful touches. It was exactly my ideal trip, and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I feel very happy. Next time, I’d like to bring my family and visit again. Thank you very much!

    The hospitality was excellent, and I was able to relax.

    Thank you for taking such good care of us. There’s no doubt this is “IKYU Plus+.” The Room facilities, amenities, and supplies were impeccable. The meals were full of seasonal character, and the careful craftsmanship—refined without being showy—was wonderful; we enjoyed everything. As for the breakfast rice, “the rice is shining” is not an exaggeration—it was truly delicious. The cherry blossoms visible from the dining area were a little past their peak and had turned to green leaves, but a different cherry tree was in full bloom from our Room. The next morning, in winds like a spring storm, petals swirled so thickly it almost looked like snow—we thoroughly enjoyed the tasteful scenery. Above all else here are the staff—truly every single person—so polite and pleasant, always smiling and making an effort to understand our wishes. We were able to relax in great comfort. There are several Accommodations I love across The whole country, but this is the first where I was impressed by everyone’s service. Please continue with this attitude going forward. Just one thing: since there aren’t many Rooms, it’s fine that the large public bath isn’t big; however, the open-air bath in the large public bath is for one person only. Normally you can simply take turns—and at times we even had the large public bath to ourselves—but in the morning another female guest sat on the rim of the ceramic open-air tub reading a paperback book. In her private bath or a reservable private bath would be one thing, but doing that at a one-person open-air tub in a shared public bath? I couldn’t help questioning her manners. This isn’t an issue with your Accommodation but with that guest’s etiquette; still, it was disappointing. Thank you again for your hospitality. We will visit again.

    Wakayama is the best!

    This was my first trip to Shirahama, Wakayama. I chose this Accommodation because I really wanted to enjoy a course featuring Wakayama ingredients, and it was absolutely the right choice. The dinner dishes and sake pairings were outstanding. The staff’s hospitality was very kind, making for a truly pleasant stay. Done—this is an Accommodation I definitely want to visit again!

    We stayed for one night to celebrate her birthday, and it was undoubtedly the best Ryokan we have ever experienced. We were looking forward to our stay even before arriving, but it exceeded all expectations and left us truly moved. Due to our circumstances, we had to request changes to the check-in time and dinner schedule. The staff accommodated us with kindness and without hesitation, which we greatly appreciated. On top of that, they graciously upgraded our room on the day of arrival, making this special occasion even more memorable. From the moment we entered the Room, it felt extraordinary, allowing us to relax in comfort. Both dinner and breakfast featured dishes made with local ingredients that were carefully prepared. Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented, making mealtime a delightful experience. The bouquet and cake I requested as a surprise were perfectly arranged as well, bringing her immense joy. Above all else, the hospitality from every staff member was exceptional; their kindness and attentiveness left a lasting impression on us throughout our stay. The cleanliness of the Ryokan was impeccable—there wasn’t a single thing that concerned us during our visit—and we felt completely at ease. Even at departure during their warm send-off, everything about this Ryokan was flawless from start to finish. We already miss Kuroshio Sou deeply... We will definitely return! Thank you so much!

    First Time in Nanki Shirahama

    A truly wonderful accommodation. Both the interior and the rooms are stylish and clean. I visited the large public bath several times and always had it to myself, allowing me to fully relax and enjoy the onsen. The private bath was also excellent. Meals, both breakfast and dinner, featured delicious fish dishes, including some unique local recipes. The paired wine was also delightful. Above all, every staff member was incredibly pleasant and welcoming. I would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much!

    The refined sense of style is evident from the logo!

    At the end of November, we visited Wakayama for the first time. For our second night, my daughter chose a quiet accommodation in Shirahama Onsen with delicious-looking meals. This simple yet very comfortable accommodation truly stands out for its cuisine. The dishes, made with basic seasonings and seasonal ingredients sourced from Wakayama producers, were aromatic and delightful in texture. Everything was genuinely delicious without exaggeration. During the meal, we also learned more about Wakayama and received advice to plan our next day’s itinerary—a fun experience for us who had no set plans. Leftover rice was shaped into round rice balls for us to enjoy as a late-night snack. From the welcome drink to the facility tour and room explanation, everything was handled with care. The room numbers being inspired by "Manyoshu" poetry added an interesting touch. A letter from the manager discovered later brought additional joy. This stylish accommodation exuded attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and high quality throughout. The public bath was on the smaller side but wasn’t crowded during our visit so it wasn’t an issue. The mineral deposits in the water weren’t bothersome either. Even details like artistic baskets in the changing area stood out as unique features. Drinking water came from Wakayama too! Post-bath kudzu ice could be taken back to your room without melting—perfectly paired with various local fruits from Wakayama. We relaxed in a quiet room with chic blinds and slept soundly on comfortable beds until morning when we woke up to a delicious breakfast waiting for us. It was so cozy that we lingered until almost check-out time. Thanks to Kuroshio Sou's hospitality, Wakayama felt much closer to us as parent and child—a heartfelt thank you for creating such wonderful memories!

    The finest hospitality

    I discovered this place on IKYU about two years ago and had always wanted to stay, but it was hard to find availability. Finally, I was able to book a stay. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed with a delightful dessert and drink, which immediately eased our travel fatigue. The decor, including the plants displayed throughout the property, was even more stylish and soothing than in the photos. In the private bath, cold drinks were thoughtfully prepared for us—a refreshing treat after bathing. Additionally, there were many thoughtful touches in the Room that brought joy at every turn. Traveling with a small child can be challenging, but this trip made our entire family happy and fulfilled. We are truly grateful for this experience and will absolutely return again!

    Excellent cuisine and hospitality.

    The service, cuisine, and room were all excellent, offering great value for the price. The explanation during check-in was thorough, and our room was kindly upgraded this time. Thank you for accommodating our requests to borrow a bathroom chair and a fan. The detailed explanations about the dishes and tableware made the meals even more enjoyable. We also appreciated the helpful advice on sightseeing spots and recommended local shops for the next day, making it a wonderful stay. If I had to point out one downside, it would be that since our stay was on the day after a closure day, we couldn’t leave our luggage in advance in the morning before check-in as staff only arrive after 12 PM on such days. It would have been nice to know this beforehand (though I admit I should have checked myself). Even considering this minor issue, it was an exceptional accommodation that I would highly recommend to friends!

    This time, I stayed at this accommodation with a one-night stay and breakfast plan, fulfilling my long-held dream. Upon arrival, the staff welcomed me with warm smiles, instantly easing the fatigue of my journey. Although I had dinner outside, the staff kindly recommended nearby restaurants and even helped me plan the next day's sightseeing spots and how to explore the Kumano Kodo. Their thoughtful guidance made me feel very supported, and their desire to enhance my travel experience was evident in every suggestion. The onsen with natural flowing hot spring water had a gentle touch on the skin, warming me from within and providing deep relaxation for both body and mind. The charming logos found throughout the facility and the well-thought-out amenities added a soothing touch, reflecting their attention to detail and hospitality. Breakfast was truly a treat. The freshly cooked rice, prepared according to the reservation time, was glossy and fragrant. The miso soup with rich dashi flavor, piping hot tamagoyaki, and carefully prepared vegetables were all filled with care, making me feel happy from the start of the day. Next time, I hope to bring my parents for a two-night stay with dinner included. Since I stayed in a standard room on the second floor this time (without an elevator), I appreciated the thoughtful recommendation of first-floor rooms for my elderly parents. Every moment of my stay became a warm and kind memory of this wonderful trip. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    An accommodation where you can enjoy the luxury of doing nothing.

    ◯ The room was neither too small nor too large, and the Ryukyu tatami and cushions were excellent. It was not overly cluttered but refined, making it a very relaxing room. I often watch movies in the accommodation during trips, so I initially felt disappointed that there wasn’t a Blu-ray Disc player. However, with video-on-demand services available and access to Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+, it turned out to be great. ◯ The minibar in the room had one craft beer and one juice each, which might feel slightly insufficient if you want to relax with drinks after dinner in your room. It would be even better if other alcoholic beverages were available at the select shop. ◯ The ReFa showerhead in the public bath had relatively low water pressure. The hairdryer provided was also by ReFa, along with OSAJI cleansing products available for use. The hairdryer in the room was from SALONIA. I particularly liked that the combs provided were wooden-made amenities. The fragrance spray helped promote restful sleep as well! The indoor slippers were so comfortable that I wanted to buy them as souvenirs! Although I usually don’t wear loungewear during trips, this accommodation’s linen-like loungewear was so comfortable that I wore it throughout my stay here! Having larger sizes would make it even more relaxing for me personally. ◯ The onsen worked wonders on my tired body! On our first day of arrival—exhausted due to train delays—the private bath (with natural hot spring water) we used early next morning truly rejuvenated us. ◯ During meals at this accommodation—a map of Wakayama showing producers’ locations added an enjoyable touch while dining; learning about local areas is indeed part of travel's charm! The grilled sweetfish alongside kettle-cooked beef & asparagus rice dish tasted absolutely divine!! Staff wearing grape badges seemed knowledgeable about food topics enhancing overall meal experiences further through engaging conversations shared together! ◯ When unexpected train cancellations disrupted plans leaving us drained upon reaching accommodations eventually -     A wonderful accommodation with just the right essentials.

    A truly wonderful accommodation. The staff maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness, and the serene environment with only 11 groups allowed for a peaceful stay amidst beautiful scenery. The space was not overly extravagant but had just the right amount of everything needed, making it incredibly comfortable. Meals were enjoyed at a counter overlooking the sea, without any awkward eye contact with other guests, allowing us to relax and savor dinner while watching the sunset over the ocean. The rare local sake introduced through pairing was also successfully purchased at Toretore Market on our way back, adding joy to our journey home. The Onsen included private options, with thoughtful touches like chilled water prepared individually—such attention to detail was heartwarming. It’s an elegant yet understated luxury that defines this lovely accommodation. I’m already planning a return visit with my parents next time!

    It was an accommodation with delicious meals.

    During my trip to Wakayama Prefecture, I decided to stay here for one night in Shirahama. The highlight of this accommodation is the delicious meals. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent. If I may add, it would have been nice to have a fresh vegetable salad for breakfast, but even without it, I was very satisfied. Considering the price, the room, private bath, and view were somewhat average. This seems to be an accommodation primarily for enjoying meals. However, the hospitality of all the staff was outstanding, making it a great place to stay. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience!

    For a Restful Sleep

    This was yet another visit, and once again, I fell into a deep sleep. Arriving early allowed me to enjoy the Onsen all to myself without any worries. The stylish and uncluttered atmosphere naturally calmed my mind, letting me momentarily forget all responsibilities. Soaking in the warm water, feeling relaxed as the sun set...     Exceptional accommodation with outstanding hospitality and cuisine!

    The staff were truly pleasant and maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness, allowing me to relax during my stay. The lobby had a sense of openness with a great view, and the interior design reflected thoughtful attention to detail with a natural and unpretentious elegance. And the meals were absolutely delightful! Everything was prepared using local ingredients, crafted with care that could be appreciated both visually and in taste. The highlights for me were the fresh grilled sweetfish and Kumano beef asparagus rice—both were exceptional. I’ve visited many accommodations, but it’s rare to find one so dedicated to using local ingredients in every dish. The view from the room I stayed in was also stunning, providing a truly soothing experience. I believe each season offers different scenery and cuisine to enjoy here, so I look forward to visiting again someday. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Always satisfied.

    We visit "Kuroshio Sou" for special occasions. Every time we come here, both our mind and body feel warmly relaxed. Locally sourced ingredients, clean Rooms, and the consistent hospitality of the staff... it's a place where we feel truly comfortable. We always want to return to this place!     A wonderful accommodation.

    You can relax and take it easy. However, the meal portions were quite small and honestly disappointing. Next time, I might consider staying without including dinner. Aside from the meals, it was an accommodation that exceeded expectations. Thank you for your hospitality.

    About the Room

    The Ryokan was quite stylish, but the beds were designed in a staircase style, which caused some trouble when getting up at night, such as missing a step. When they tried to relax in the living area, it wasn’t structured for sitting comfortably and felt uncomfortable. It was a trip gifted to my parents who are over 80 years old. While they appreciated the beautiful scenery, they mentioned that the design was overly elaborate and not very comfortable overall. However, when they honestly shared their feedback with the hotel staff, they were treated with great care and professionalism, which reassured them. They also said that the food was excellent. They suggested that instead of catering mainly to younger guests, it would be better if the Hotel could appeal to people of all ages.

    The meals were excellent.

    Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious and satisfying. We stayed as a group of three, but the room felt a bit small. The bathroom was also small, so it can be inconvenient with more people using the shower. The service was good.
