An Accommodation where you can experience the charm of traditional Japan

This was my third stay, and each time I leave thinking, “I’m glad I stayed here—I’ll come back.” It’s a Ryokan where the artworks in the lounge and the amenities in the guest rooms are all wonderful traditional tools that showcase classic Japanese craftsmanship, and I’m delighted to see different pieces each visit. I was a little worried after hearing the chef had changed, but it was completely unfounded—the flavors and menu were both outstanding. Since we stayed the day after my birthday, they prepared a beautiful dessert plate for me. I was truly impressed by the young pastry chef’s skill. The wine pairing was also excellent. Breakfast was thoughtfully crafted as well, and I think I’ll always remember how delicious the Onomichi ingredients were when lightly grilled over a hibachi. Every staff member was pleasant, and I really appreciate how they stay close while maintaining just the right distance. We’ll be back again in winter—thank you in advance.

Although it is away from central Onomichi, I liked it.

We were very lucky to secure a Reservation during Golden Week. We took a taxi from Onomichi Station. Although the main roads were congested due to the busy tourist season, we had informed the property that we would leave our luggage before check-in, so a staff member came to collect it as soon as we arrived. This allowed us to head out sightseeing without keeping the taxi waiting. From the Room window, we could see a simple fishing port. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The dinner chef seemed like a quiet, dedicated cook, which we appreciated. My wife and I enjoyed one bottle of sparkling wine. The woman at the front desk also serves as an Onomichi tourism ambassador and kindly gave us detailed information about Ikuchijima for the next day. As an added bonus, showing her ambassador business card even got us a discount.

The large public bath is unavailable.

Given the price, I had high expectations, but the large public bath was unavailable and the Room only had a shower. Since Onsen was what I was most looking forward to, I was very disappointed. This should be clearly stated on the website that the large public bath is not available. Even though it was unavailable due to the Ryokan’s circumstances, there was no compensation or alternative service, which made it extremely frustrating. I paid a lot and want my money back. This was my first time staying at a Ryokan where I couldn’t use the large public bath.

Fully satisfied with Onomichi’s charm, the wonderful meals, and the warm hospitality.

This was a truly wonderful Accommodation where we could fully experience Onomichi’s history and charm. What impressed us most was the friendly, warm hospitality of the staff. Thanks to their perfect sense of distance and thoughtful attention to detail, we felt comfortable throughout our stay and were able to relax completely. The meals were also simply outstanding. The carefully prepared dishes that brought out the best in each ingredient, along with the excellent pairings, were delicious for both my spouse and me, making for a thoroughly satisfying dining experience. As for the bath, since it is not an Onsen, I rated it as “average,” but it was spotless throughout and very pleasant to use. With its high-quality space and heartfelt hospitality, this became a wonderful travel memory. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

It was an Accommodation where I could relax and be soothed by the atmosphere of Onomichi.

We traveled by car as a couple to Yugo Onsen, Yunokawa Onsen in Shimane, and Hagi Onsen, and arrived at this Accommodation at the end of Golden Week. The moment we passed through the gate, we could feel the atmosphere of Onomichi. We were a little concerned that it isn’t an Onsen, but we were very satisfied with both the open-air bath with a traditional hagama-style tub and the indoor bath filled with the scent of hinoki cypress. It was truly an Accommodation where we could relax at ease. The meals were full of Seto Inland Sea flavors, and we thoroughly enjoyed the paired wines as well. We were happy to spend the last days of Golden Week here. This has become an Accommodation we would love to visit again slowly and unhurriedly.\nThank you very much for your hospitality.

    The meals are excellent.

Dinner was a creative French course with perfectly matched wine pairings. Breakfast was Japanese-style, and the grilled fish and grated yam were delicious—I even had four bowls of Koshihomai rice and three refills of miso soup. The relaxed lounge offers unlimited sake and local craft beer, plus exceptional coffee ground from whole beans and lemonade made from scratch. It’s not an Onsen, so I deducted points only for that, but everything else is well worth full marks.

Ninja-level hospitality that helps you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

Our stay at Onomichi Nishiyama was, to put it mildly, “perfect.” What impressed us most was the staff’s hospitality. When we returned to the Accommodation by car, they greeted us at the entrance with “Welcome back” and smoothly handed us the key we had left with them—so perfectly timed that I honestly wondered if they were ninjas (laughs). The all-you-can-drink beverages and unlimited sweets in the Korin Lounge also made for a wonderfully luxurious time. If you’re worn out from the pace of city life, you’ll be genuinely refreshed here. Just one suggestion for the future: having a direct-call mobile phone to the front desk (without a camera function) in the bathroom would feel reassuring in case of an accidental fall. Since there is already a smartphone placed in the guest room rather than a landline, it would be convenient. I shared this with the Ryokan as well, and they took it very seriously, so I’m confident that with even greater safety and peace of mind, this will become an even more outstanding Accommodation. Other than that, absolutely flawless—truly top class. We will definitely return. I have plenty of photos—including of the beautiful dishes—but please forgive me as I’m not used to posting.

It was a calm and relaxing stay, and the Room was separate, so we could unwind comfortably. The lounge in a separate building also had a lovely atmosphere, and it was great that drinks were free. The staff were also very pleasant.

    To celebrate an 80th birthday

We stayed here after visiting a grave, also to celebrate an 80th birthday. There were three of us in total—two aged 80 or older and one in their 50s—but sitting on the tatami to rest was a bit tough for all of us, and we wished there had been a sofa. It’s especially hard for elderly guests to stand up. Although it was a Room with a great view of the garden, the shoji screens in the Japanese-style room got in the way; we thought yukimi shoji would have been better. Also, the toilet door opened inward, which was very inconvenient. The meals were delicious. We were disappointed that there was no TV, so we couldn’t watch the news.

    A Charming Accommodation

I had a truly luxurious stay in a wonderfully atmospheric space where you can feel the care taken to preserve this historic building. The impeccably maintained, elegant garden is also absolutely stunning. The dining was outstanding as well—from modern dishes that blend French and Italian cuisine at dinner to an authentic Japanese breakfast, the quality exceeded expectations. In particular, the evening wine pairings recommended by two sommeliers were spot-on, making for an unforgettable marriage of food and wine. The staff’s warm hospitality was equally delightful, and I was genuinely satisfied with my stay. I would love to return again.

Everything was wonderful. The beautiful Japanese garden, the spacious Japanese-style room, the staff’s heartfelt hospitality, and the meals—everything exceeded our expectations. The open-air bath in the room was also great; if I had to add one thing, it would have been even better if it had been a free-flowing Onsen.

    The long-awaited Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama

I had long wanted to stay at Onomichi Nishiyama, and it was an extremely satisfying visit. This time I stayed in the Wara Room. It is a traditional Japanese house with a thatched roof and classic construction, but the facilities are well maintained and the furnishings have an elegant modern Japanese style, balancing tradition and comfort. As it is a private rental style, closing the sliding doors gives you a sense of privacy, while opening them reveals a beautiful garden and creates an open, airy feel. As expected with a traditional Japanese house, you can hear footsteps from the garden and neighboring buildings. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and I also enjoyed the dinner pairing. The lounge offers several local alcoholic drinks as well, so you can fully enjoy them. The service was pleasantly attentive without being intrusive. Next time, I would love to stay in a different Room.

A wonderful Accommodation where you can enjoy Onomichi’s culture and tranquility

I stayed at Onomichi Nishiyama, which I had been curious about for some time. From the moment you step onto the grounds, you’re greeted by beautifully maintained gardens and charming buildings, creating a calm atmosphere that feels uniquely Onomichi. The location overlooking the Seto Inland Sea is also wonderful, and I was able to relax and truly unwind. What impressed me most was the dining. Every dish featuring ingredients from the Setouchi area was beautifully presented, made the most of the quality of each ingredient, and tasted excellent. Dining in the open kitchen with a lively atmosphere let me appreciate the chefs’ careful craftsmanship and made it a truly special experience.

    Is it all-inclusive?

Since I had stayed at this Accommodation before the renovation, I was looking forward to seeing what had changed. What disappointed me most after entering the lounge and hearing the explanation was that although I have stayed at all-inclusive Hotels many times, there were no amenities in the Room, and having to go and pick them up myself felt different from what I had imagined. In that case, I wish it had been stated clearly, such as “with lounge access.” Also, I chose a Room with an open-air bath, but it became a hassle having to fill it with hot water each time. The day before, the open-air bath at a Ryokan in Hagi was temperature-controlled 24 hours a day, so I couldn’t help comparing. All of the staff greeted us with smiles and were very pleasant. This is an Accommodation I would like to visit when I want to relax.

    A wonderful space

The lounge, Room, and garden were all wonderful. The restaurant was also lovely, but we didn’t realize that the wine pairing had become an extra paid option and that the course no longer allowed unlimited à la carte dishes. That was our lack of research. However, I don’t think IKYU’s site mentioned the menu change? I felt sorry for my husband, who doesn’t drink and was especially looking forward to “eating as much as he wanted.” I was able to fully enjoy drinks in the lounge, so it was a very satisfying stay for me. I could relax enough in the bath in our Room, but since one hour of private use of the large public bath is free, we were also able to enjoy a bigger bath. Because it’s time-based, it would be nice to have a clock in the changing room. It would also be nice to have a heater in the Room toilet. One more thing I’d like improved is the quality of the tissues in the Room. Even with those points, it was a wonderful stay. We’d love to visit again.

An Adults-Only Getaway at a Charming Ryokan

I stayed for one night during a week-long solo trip. I wanted to spend my rare time off relaxing in luxury at a wonderful Accommodation, so I decided to stay at Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama, which I had bookmarked after finding it in a previous search. I arrived feeling excited by the beautiful photos and atmosphere on the Accommodation’s page, and I ended up having an even happier time than I imagined! The spacious Room, filled with elements of Japanese tea-room culture throughout, felt both special and calming. It was so peaceful that I could truly relax as if separated from everyday life. The lounge—stocked with delicious tea and coffee, as well as various alcoholic drinks (including craft beer!), all free—was open until late at night, and being able to take whatever I liked back to my Room was perfect for me as someone who enjoys a drink!! Reading elegantly with a beer in hand while looking out over the charming garden scenery, taking occasional naps… it made for an incredibly luxurious vacation. Both dinner and breakfast were also excellent at the stylish open-kitchen counter seating! I was especially surprised by how tender the meat at dinner was. I requested wine pairing with dinner, and every glass matched the dishes well and was easy to enjoy. I ended up happily tipsy—and when I woke up in my Room, the time for the bath Reservation had already passed lol. The in-room bath was wonderful too, but not making it to the large public bath this time is my only regret… lol From check-in procedures to meal service through check-out, all of the staff were extremely kind. I also really enjoyed chatting with them. I would love to visit again! Thank you very much!

A Ryokan to enjoy with all five senses.

I visited Onomichi on my first solo trip in a while, a place I’d been curious about for some time. I was really looking forward to staying at Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama, known as a wonderful Michelin one-star Hotel. Since the theme of this trip was to relax and take things slowly on my own, I made a Reservation for the Ume room with an open-air bath. Soaking in the open-air bath at a leisurely pace while listening to the bells from a nearby temple from 6:00 a.m. was incredible and truly calming. The meals were also excellent—French cuisine for dinner and Japanese cuisine for breakfast—so it never felt repetitive. The fish dish had crisp, fragrant skin and tender, fluffy flesh, and the meat was satisfyingly hearty. The maitake mushroom and pumpkin soup was so rich it felt almost like a sauce—it was delicious. Dinner while watching the chef cook, and breakfast while looking out over the garden—both were wonderfully luxurious experiences. There were many international guests as well, and I appreciated that the staff explained each dish carefully to everyone without distinction. They all apologized for their English, but even in one’s native language it can be hard to explain dishes clearly—I felt their service was truly excellent. This is an Accommodation that deserves its Michelin status—a Ryokan you can enjoy with all five senses. I would love to stay again.

    Everything is excellent.

I first stayed here in December two years ago, and this time I returned as a repeat guest. Everything was wonderful—the Room, the meals, and the view from the Accommodation—but I was especially moved by the dining experience. The meals make generous use of local ingredients: dinner is a full-course French meal, and breakfast is Japanese cuisine. Being able to watch the cooking in the open kitchen, along with the sommelier’s thoughtful explanations of the food and drinks, made everything taste even better and turned it into a truly enjoyable time. I was also impressed by how delicious Onomichi’s vegetables were, and buying the same ones at a local farmers’ market on my way home became a great travel memory. There is no TV in the Room, but that allowed me to fully enjoy both the view and the atmosphere. New board games had also been introduced, so we could make the most of our time together with those right in front of us and truly cherish it. The staff are incredibly kind, and you can strongly feel how much they value connections with people—especially their guests. For us, Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama is truly an irreplaceable place in our lives. We will definitely stay again.

You can upgrade to a Room with an open-air bath for 10,000 yen, but when filling the bath, the shower did not work at all. It would have been helpful to know this in advance. The meals were also underwhelming. Breakfast was simple, lacked nutritional balance, and was not visually appealing. The meat for dinner was too rare instead of medium. The low-temperature cooking method raised concerns about safety.

The garden and building were truly beautiful and full of character. In the lobby, we were able to choose our favorite tea and alcoholic drinks. Watching the food being prepared right in front of us made for a lively dining experience, and we were very satisfied with the meal.

It turned into a rewarding trip.

We treated ourselves to this stay as a reward. The exceptional hospitality, cuisine, garden, guest room, and bath left us in awe throughout our stay. During dinner, despite it being a French course meal, the staff kindly served our favorite beer without hesitation, which made us truly happy. It was also the first time we had such delicious maitake mushrooms. The next day, we casually mentioned visiting the Shimose Art Museum, and it seemed that all the staff shared this information among themselves. Multiple staff members approached us with tips on parking locations and how to enjoy the museum. Thanks to their outstanding hospitality, we had an amazing time. It was a luxurious trip that healed our daily work fatigue—highly recommended for couples! We definitely plan to stay again!

    It’s a minor detail, but...

It was an accommodation I had always dreamed of staying at. Even the taxi driver mentioned it as a "very famous and splendid ryokan." However, perhaps my expectations were too high, as there were some disappointing points. Please forgive me for offering slightly critical comments. First, the room key was difficult to lock and unlock, requiring a certain technique. Even the staff mentioned, "It's a bit tricky," so I felt this could be improved. Additionally, regarding the taxi and delivery service arrangements I requested during the night, I had to explain them again in the morning, suggesting that communication among staff could be better managed. At both breakfast and dinner venues, when being guided to our table, we were asked for our name with "Could you tell us your name?" which left me feeling slightly disappointed. While it may be necessary in some cases, this is not something I've often experienced at accommodations of similar rank. As a guest staying there, it would have been more delightful if they greeted us with something like "You must be Mr./Ms. ◯◯," without needing us to state our name first. The drinks in the lounge featured many local specialties and were excellent—I enjoyed them thoroughly! The meals were also delicious; thank you very much for such wonderful food. I am grateful for all the kindness shown by your staff members during my stay. Thank you very much for taking care of me during this visit!

    Accommodation with Delicious Meals

During my previous stay, the meals were delicious, so I chose this accommodation again for the dining experience. Although it's unfortunate that the all-inclusive option is no longer available, I was still satisfied as the champagne in the room and drinks in the lounge were free to enjoy as much as I liked. The bath is not an onsen, so it might not be suitable for those looking to relax in hot springs. However, for a dining-focused stay, this accommodation makes me want to return multiple times. Amenities are minimal and selected by guests based on their needs, but for someone who brings their own essentials like me, it's not an issue at all and seems environmentally friendly. I look forward to visiting again soon!

    Onomichi Hidden Accommodation

The carefully prepared dishes reflect a warm sense of hospitality. Regarding the facility, the sliding door was heavy, and the room key's position was too close to the frame, making it difficult to open and close. Additionally, it was disappointing that the temperature of the open-air bath was too low to use. With just a few improvements, this accommodation has great potential for even higher satisfaction.

Disappointing enough to make me want to write a review.

The staff's service, the cuisine, and the wine were excellent and very satisfying. Thank you very much. However, I was deeply disappointed with the room. There is a significant difference between having character and feeling old and shabby. I have stayed at accommodations costing over 100,000 yen multiple times, but this was the first time I felt so disappointed with a room. First of all, there was a gap in the window next to the entrance door. The wall in the dressing area had cracks, and the tea room was dimly lit with no view outside, making it uninviting for relaxation. Additionally, from an outward-opening window not facing the courtyard side, there was an unkempt view that seemed designed under the assumption it would not be opened at all. Even during peak season, it did not feel like a room worth over 100,000 yen per night. It is especially disappointing because other aspects were great. While I assume some rooms have been beautifully renovated, the quality of what is supposed to be your most expensive room raises serious concerns. For future guests as well as your reputation, I believe improvements should be made promptly. This request is directed more towards management than staff. If only this issue with rooms were addressed, this could become an accommodation I'd consider staying at again. Since there were no photos of rooms available, I am sharing pictures of meals and lounges instead—both of which exceeded expectations. Highly recommend for restaurant use!

    Feels like a seaside villa.

The accommodation is located right by the sea, with a detached building facing a spacious garden, giving it a villa-like feel. The meals were delicious and enjoyable. A wedding was also held in the garden, which brought us happiness as well. Thank you very much.

    Had too high expectations.

I was drawn to the Osaji amenities and all-inclusive concept and had always wanted to visit! I arrived around 2 PM before check-in, but when I passed by a cleaning staff member in the garden, they completely ignored me. Maybe they were a foreign staff member? The head chef at dinner also seemed stern and intimidating. Since it’s an open kitchen, I ended up eating while watching someone with a grumpy expression. It would have been nice to see a smile at least when serving the food. Is this level of service what you get for 40,000 yen per person? There were some polite and smiling staff members as well... The rice at breakfast was delicious! The grilled fish was tasty but too salty. The lounge is a very lovely space, and being able to take drinks and snacks back to the room was great; however, having to go outside and walk to another building just to use the restroom was slightly inconvenient. I had been most looking forward to the bath, but it felt moldy or unclean, so I quickly finished up my time there. When I opened the window in my room, I could see what looked like an employee waiting area or storage house directly outside—so I couldn’t keep it open long; maybe that’s why it feels damp inside? There’s also a factory near the hotel that made loud clanging noises during Monday daytime hours—it was quite noisy.

    This is my fourth stay.

I was very satisfied this time as well. I proudly tell others, "I found a wonderful Ryokan," and keep bringing different members to stay here. Those I introduced it to also said, "The food is delicious," and "It's a great Ryokan," which made me happy. The lounge adorned with art pieces gets upgraded every time I visit. This time, I enjoyed tasting small amounts of liqueur and sake, which was very delightful. I am grateful to the staff for their warm service again this time. Thank you very much!

    First Time in Onomichi

It was a charming and wonderful accommodation. Thank you for the excellent hospitality. All the dishes were very delicious, and the large-grain rice in the morning was exceptional. Although it was a short stay during our drive trip from Zushi to Shimonoseki and Moji, we were able to relax. Next time, we hope to visit at a more leisurely pace. Now we are heading back to Yokosuka by ferry. Thank you very much!

    Fun for the whole family!

Having previously stayed and been highly satisfied, I recommended this wonderful Ryokan in Onomichi to my travel-loving son who lives in Tokyo. This time, we found a great Connect Plan for the Asahi Room and Sakura Room, so we stayed as a family. Everything was even more upgraded than before, and the whole family was delighted. The warm hospitality from the General Manager and all the staff was truly appreciated. We enjoyed not only the food and drinks but also inclusive offerings of local specialties such as vinegar, snacks, aroma products, and loungewear that reflect Onomichi's traditions—an indulgent experience indeed. We are planning to stay again soon with different members of our group. Thank you in advance!
