    A unique traditional accommodation transformed significantly through renovation

    The building is old, but it has been renovated to create a comfortable and refreshed interior. The room I stayed in was next to the dining area on the second floor, so stairs were not an issue for me. However, this accommodation does not have an elevator, and the property is spread across a sloped area. For those staying in rooms farther from the dining area or who find stairs challenging, it might be slightly inconvenient. The room was spacious with modern facilities, including updated plumbing. The bed was very comfortable as well. There was an onsen bath in the room with natural hot spring water available anytime, which was a great feature; however, the bathroom itself felt somewhat small and might leave some wanting more space. Please note that this accommodation does not have a large public bath; instead, there are three saunas available for use during your stay. Guests can reserve one of these saunas for free directly from their room during their stay. Sauna enthusiasts will likely enjoy this feature; however, those looking forward to enjoying an onsen in a large public bath may feel slightly disappointed. As for meals, breakfast consisted of standard Japanese dishes while dinner featured a unique fusion of French and Japanese cuisine presented as a creative kaiseki course meal—highly recommended for food lovers! Additionally, beverages are all-inclusive with a wide variety of alcoholic options available—a delightful service for those who enjoy drinks!

    If promoting a sauna, make improvements.

    I stayed alone in a special condition room that I had been curious about for a while. The room's bath, as described, was small but had excellent water quality, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The bedding was high-quality and allowed me to sleep well, and the staff seemed very dedicated. However, regarding the self-löyly sauna that is advertised as a highlight, I think there are issues. From the photos of the saunas showing two tubs each, I naturally assumed one would be an onsen; however, both were cold baths. The sauna room felt cramped—barely fitting two people—and since the door closes quickly, even bringing in the löyly bucket was quite challenging. This setup doesn't allow for much relaxation and makes it hard to fully utilize the 90-minute time slot per group. While it's likely too late to redesign the sauna itself now, at least one of those tubs should be converted into an onsen. Additionally, instead of limiting guests to one reservation per stay for 90 minutes each time slot could be reduced to 60 minutes so that guests can enjoy it multiple times (e.g., 2–3 sessions). The meals were tasty but not "exceptional" enough to leave a lasting impression—which was disappointing. However, seeing some rave reviews suggests this accommodation might depend heavily on personal preferences. As for me... even though it's all-inclusive with this price point and facilities offered—I don't think I'll return again.

    6th Anniversary and Birthday with Him

    This was my first time staying here! I was specifically looking for a Room with a sauna and open-air bath that he loves, and I found this place! It was very clean, and I felt so happy. The birthday cake was also delicious! Everyone was kind and attentive, which made me feel truly at ease and enjoy my stay. Thank you very much!

    Repeat stay! Highly satisfied!

    This is my second visit in two years. The food was even more delicious than last time, and I could truly enjoy the flavors of local ingredients. I had a full 90 minutes to use the private sauna, which left me feeling completely refreshed. The all-you-can-drink option during meals is definitely a great perk. The lounge was also excellent! This time, I stayed in a discounted room with some conditions, but it was comfortable enough as long as you're not sensitive to footsteps or minor noises. While there are slight sounds due to the building's structure, the affordable price made it absolutely worth it. I will definitely stay here again!

    For the second night in Yugawara

    This is my third stay at this accommodation. I’m delighted to see small changes each time, which makes returning even more enjoyable. The variety of all-inclusive snacks has increased, making the time spent in the lounge feel even more fulfilling. The individually wrapped rice crackers are adorable. Additionally, the dishes have undergone significant changes compared to before; they look very modern and sophisticated, yet with just one bite, you can taste the deep flavor of dashi broth—it was truly surprising. Everything was incredibly delicious. There’s always some change every time I visit, offering fresh discoveries with each stay, so I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

    Only stairs are available, which made it difficult for me with limited mobility to go for meals. However, assistance was provided for carrying luggage during check-in and check-out. The open-air bath was cold, and it took a long time for the shower's hot water to come out, which was tough. It would have been helpful to have prior information stating, "No elevator available. Only stairs are present, making it unsuitable for those with limited mobility." As an older Ryokan undergoing innovation, the use of stairs and noise from footsteps on upper floors were quite noticeable.

    It was disappointing compared to what I expected.

    I stayed during the October holiday. I was looking forward to it as the Reviews on IKYU.com were good and it was highly praised on YouTube, but... The staff were pleasant and accommodating, but are the sizes of the in-house wear unisex? The pants were about to fall off me, so I requested an exchange, only to be told there was only one size available. They provided a yukata instead, but when I went to the dining area, I saw a woman of my size comfortably wearing a different-colored in-house wear made of washed material. When I asked again, they gave me the same answer. The next morning, not feeling like wearing a yukata anymore, I had to hold onto my pants with one hand while moving to breakfast. This was a first for me. The facility is old; you can hear doors opening and closing from other Rooms or shared areas as well as loud footsteps. My Room was on an elevated floor but even then, the noise from footsteps above was unusually loud compared to anything I've experienced before. There were no welcome drinks or late-night snacks that had been recently introduced on YouTube either. The handrails along stone steps (rock stairs) were also incompletely installed—was this trip meant for relaxation or exhaustion? Both breakfast and dinner lacked any sense of excitement or delight for me. Since IKYU has always been my go-to platform for travel Reservations until now, this experience left me very disappointed—I even canceled my New Year Reservation after returning home. This may sound like I'm complaining too much; however: please be aware that due to its old structure there are many staircases without sufficient handrails inside; amenities such as towels in Rooms are limited; also note that monkeys appear around here!

    The photos on the website can be misleading and may lead to disappointment. From the moment you enter the lobby, it feels underwhelming. There was no welcome drink provided. It is evident that this old Ryokan has been renovated with effort. The stairs are steep, so those with weak knees should be cautious. The mist lounge is small and looks older than in the photos, making it less inviting to stay for long. The bath attached to the room was convenient as it could be used anytime, but the antique-style shower made temperature adjustment a bit challenging. Additionally, depending on the room, drainage might be slow, causing water to pool on the floor after using the shower for a while. The food was delicious and enjoyable. However, considering it's all-inclusive at this price point with these facilities... I wouldn't consider returning. The location is halfway up a steep alleyway slope. As mentioned in other reviews, driving here is not recommended due to extreme parking difficulties. It’s better to use a bus or taxi since it's close to a bus stop for easier access.

    The Onsen, cuisine, ...

    The Onsen, cuisine, and service were all excellent. The wine and sake served in the lounge and during dinner were also wonderful, pairing perfectly with the meals. The room was a courtyard room with a private open-air bath located a few steps down from the main area. While it was convenient for soaking in the Onsen right away, it became challenging when washing long hair or cleaning my face. There was no mirror near the bath exit or sink nearby, making it difficult to moisturize my face and body while looking into a mirror. Even washing hands required going back to the wet bathing area. In the morning, when washing my face, I had to use the small handwashing area next to the toilet. The shelf space there was very limited; with items like toothbrushes and hand soap already placed there, I had no space for personal belongings. I ended up using a nearby chair as an improvised table. This might not be inconvenient for men but felt slightly impractical for me. That said, the layout and ambiance of the room were absolutely lovely—very relaxing and perfect overall! If more storage or placement options could be added around mirrors or sinks in such areas, it would enhance comfort even further. Overall, this is an amazing accommodation that I would love to visit again when traveling to Yugawara!

    From the moment of check-in, I felt uneasy and concerned due to the attitude of the front desk staff and another staff member. Although I had made a Reservation for a Room with a courtyard view, I was guided to a different Room that looked completely different from the photos. Upon reviewing the photos on IKYU.com again, I realized it was indeed not the correct Room. When I contacted the front desk, they said it was because "the staff member had mistaken my name." While being guided to my originally Reserved Room, that same staff member oddly asked me, "Have you been holding back this whole time?" which left me confused. Though tired, I gave a polite smile but couldn't understand why someone who made such an error would make such a comment. The Room matched its photos; however, there was noticeable mold in the bathroom. The roll curtains and screens were covered in mold as well and seemed fragile when trying to lower them—these should be repaired. The parking area is difficult to locate; creating a proper parking space would be better. This place is not recommended for elderly guests or those with mobility issues but may be suitable for those with good physical strength.

    If asked whether it's "good" or "bad," our impression is that it doesn't quite suit us. Perhaps it would be great for younger individuals or those who are super sauna enthusiasts and traveling solo. It might also suit talkative seniors with wealth (choosing the high-priced Room).     Only suitable for kei cars (light vehicles).

    At the end of a narrow and steep slope, there was an accommodation that felt like a mix between a ryokan and a guesthouse. When I returned to the accommodation scared because of the narrow road, a boy who seemed to be part-time staff simply said, "That road is only passable with a small car," and did not offer any help. I barely managed to reverse out of there, feeling like my life was at risk.

    I was very satisfied.

    I stayed here with my partner to celebrate a birthday. Since I have difficulty with dairy products, I made a special request to change the dessert to something without cream. The head chef kindly prepared a fruit-based dessert just for me, which was absolutely delicious, and I was deeply impressed by their hospitality. The room (located on an elevated area) had a wonderful blend of nostalgia from the renovated old Ryokan and modern design. The Onsen was also fantastic. I would love to stay here again!

    My first visit to Yugawara.

    This was our first visit to Yugawara as a couple. The onsen, located outside the room with 24-hour free-flowing water, was refreshing and very satisfying. We were looking forward to the all-inclusive experience, but compared to other accommodations, the selection of drinks and snacks was limited and fell short of expectations. The mist lounge after the sauna felt somewhat neglected and lacked a relaxing atmosphere, which was disappointing. The beer often ran out, requiring us to walk down long hallways or stairs to inform staff. The shaved ice machine was out of order with no ice available either. At breakfast, instead of freshly brewed coffee from a machine, pre-made coffee in slightly lukewarm pots was served. Additionally, from 10 PM to 7 AM there were no staff present; we were instructed to contact security (ALSOK) in case of emergencies. This system left us feeling uneasy about how issues or major disasters would be handled during that time. Thankfully nothing happened during our stay—thank you for hosting us for one night and two days!

    Had a great time.

    A charmingly renovated accommodation. It would be even better with more attention to details like the stairs and maintenance. The shower curtain in the room caught my attention a bit. Overall, I think it was a great accommodation. The room was spacious enough, and the food was delicious. It would be nice to have more measures against insects in the room. Though it's my fault for leaving the window wide open while taking a bath...

    It might require some physical strength.

    Stayed with my daughter. The retro building seems to have been renovated, and stepping out of the room allows you to feel the fresh air outside. This might depend on personal perspective, but my daughter, who is extremely afraid of insects, found it challenging. The room was not spotless in every corner but clean enough not to bother us. We opted for breakfast only, which was a lovely Japanese-style meal. For those who drink alcohol, it's available for free and could be a great deal. Although we don't drink, there were enough beverages provided that we didn’t need to bring our own. The 90-minute sauna session allowed plenty of time to relax and enjoy at leisure. However, when trying to hydrate afterward, the water had run out, which was slightly disappointing. Still, it sparked an interest in saunas for us—so no complaints overall! In another room were treats like ice cream sandwiches and seasonal shaved ice along with light snacks—plenty of options to enjoy! We traveled by bus; however, there’s a steep slope leading up to the facility and many stairs inside the building as well. It requires some physical effort; therefore we'd love to visit again during an insect-free season while still feeling energetic!

    I would love to visit again.

    A charming accommodation located at the top of a steep hill. As I was traveling alone, I didn't focus too much on the facilities and stayed in a room with dappled sunlight. The room was spacious and comfortable, allowing me to relax on a Lafuma chair. Although the bathroom in the room was slightly smaller than expected from the photos, it was sufficient for warming up while lightly hugging my knees. The sauna slots were generously set at 90 minutes, providing ample time to unwind. Overall, the facilities and amenities were well-balanced, making for a very pleasant stay. If I had to point out something, when I arrived for check-in at 14:30, my room wasn't ready yet due to cleaning delays. While waiting in the entrance area as other guests were guided to their rooms one after another, it took about 50 minutes before I could enter mine—this was slightly disappointing. However, during that time, staff kindly secured my sauna reservation that would have originally been made from my room—a thoughtful gesture that I appreciated. Additionally, the bathwater was unexpectedly very hot and required significant dilution with cold water before use; this caught me off guard but wasn’t a major issue. Despite these minor inconveniences, it’s an accommodation I'd love to visit again!

    The sense of hospitality was lacking.

    Searched for all-inclusive accommodation, used by a couple in their 50s. The accommodation is located uphill, making it difficult to walk. Taking a taxi from Yugawara Station for 1,800 yen was the right choice. ○ The lobby lacked any sense of style. ○ The welcome drink and glass were not chilled. ○ Staff lacked energy and did not greet us even when we encountered them inside the facility. ○ Reaching the room involved steep slopes and many stairs, which felt dangerous. ○ Only coffee was available in the room; when we requested tea bags, we were told they were not provided. ○ The mist lounge felt like a gimmick for children; if promoting an all-inclusive experience, this area should be improved significantly. ○ Drinks during meals were self-service with limited options; it would be more accurate to describe it as "with unlimited drinks" rather than "all-inclusive." It felt misleading to call it all-inclusive. ○ The food was very ordinary—especially breakfast, which could easily be made at home—and the soup was overly salty! We visited hoping to relax at an onsen during our precious time off but left completely unsatisfied. The only positive aspect might have been the private onsen attached to our room.

    A patchwork Hotel

    There are many stairs, making it easy to get lost. The lounge and all-inclusive service were disappointing; while there was a wide variety of alcohol, for non-drinkers like me, the options were limited to diced salami and dried fruits. The freezer only had ice cream puffs, frozen curry, and pilaf. It was underwhelming. The private sauna is very cramped for two people. Additionally, the large mirror in the bath area had cracks but was not replaced—this felt unsafe and unlucky. I will not be returning.

    The all-in after a sauna session is the ultimate experience.

    I chose this accommodation because I wanted to relax in the sauna and enjoy some drinks. The parking lot was a bit hard to find, but the staff came out to assist, which was reassuring. The onsen in the room was at just the right temperature, so I started with a beer in the room. The aperitif was also delicious and satisfying. After that, I enjoyed a private sauna session—it’s compact but gets incredibly hot, which felt amazing. The meals had various creative touches and were enjoyable, and the drink corner was well-stocked and excellent. Surprisingly delightful was the lounge. They offered curry and pilaf as "sauna meals," both of which were exceptional. I ended up drinking too many highballs because they had so many options! You could also make shaved ice with condensed milk that tasted fantastic.

    A Relaxing Accommodation to Feel Nature

    This is the accommodation I always stay at when visiting Yugawara! A comfortable check-in as usual, followed by a private sauna session to wash away the stress of daily life, and then enjoying an ice-cold draft beer in the relaxation room—pure bliss. After returning to my room and soaking in the onsen, I felt completely refreshed (laughs). The dinner, with its timeless concept, is something I appreciate every time I stay here. It was delicious. The staff are all friendly and full of smiles, which truly makes me happy. I’ll definitely come back to recharge whenever life gets tiring. Thank you for everything!

    This was my second stay. I enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing time in a guest room with a semi-open-air Onsen featuring natural free-flowing hot spring water. The water felt incredibly soft on the skin, allowing for deep relaxation both physically and mentally. The private sauna exceeded expectations with its authenticity, offering 90 minutes to fully unwind. The cold bath and outdoor cooling space were well-equipped, showcasing high quality throughout. The meals were beautifully crafted with attention to detail in every dish, leaving me completely satisfied. Starting from the aperitif to the main course and dessert, the dining experience felt like a well-thought-out story. The all-inclusive service was also appealing, allowing us to freely enjoy drinks and light snacks—a delightful touch! While there are some stairs and slopes within the facility that require a bit of physical effort for movement, this added to the extraordinary atmosphere of the space where I could spend special moments away from daily life.     Return for a perfect stay

    Stayed for the first time in February this year and revisited this time. Although I booked a special plan with a smaller bath, I was upgraded to a more spacious room on the day, which was an unexpected and heartwarming gesture. The onsen in the room is sourced directly from the hot spring, allowing me to soak as many times as I wanted at my convenience. I also loved the drip coffee set provided. As someone who grinds beans and brews coffee at home, being able to enjoy carefully brewed coffee even while traveling was truly delightful. The drink corner during dinner had an improved atmosphere compared to last time and was wonderful! The soba noodles with green tea flavor and sashimi were especially delicious. This time, I also used the private sauna early in the morning. It was peaceful and refreshing; smelling breakfast wafting through the hallway made me hungry, and enjoying such a delicious meal brought genuine happiness. Escaping from daily busyness here has been rejuvenating—I’d love to return again for self-care.

    Accommodation you'd want to revisit

    In conclusion, if you have a reason to visit Yugawara, this is an accommodation worth choosing. I heard that the management of this long-established ryokan has changed, incorporating various new ideas. Since I didn't know it before the changes, my first impression is that the room, the ryokan's atmosphere, and the staff all exceeded expectations. However, the biggest challenge is Yugawara's unique terrain. Looking at local signs afterward makes you think "Ah, that's what it meant," but relying on Google Maps for a first visit can lead to a tough route at the very end. While there are indeed signs available, making them "overwhelmingly noticeable" might have saved us from scraping our car mirrors (embarrassingly). Even so, this accommodation has an inexplicable charm that makes me want to revisit.

    It was a disappointing Ryokan.

    We stayed for one night over the weekend to celebrate his birthday. The room's bath was great, and we enjoyed the meals. The mist lounge felt extremely cheap. Even though there is a lounge, I don't think anyone would use it as it is now. Since it was his birthday, I requested a plate and a message card. I also sent champagne in advance and asked for it to be set up in the room with champagne glasses. When we arrived at the room, the champagne was left as delivered—though opened, so I assume they chilled it—but there was no consideration to place it in a cooler. What surprised me even more was that his name on the message card was incorrect. Getting someone's name wrong is very unpleasant, especially when celebrating their birthday—it made us feel quite disappointed. Overall, I found the quality of staff hospitality very low; it's unfortunate because this could have been much better. At check-in, we were asked if we needed a taxi for the next day; since we planned to walk towards the station, we declined but were told that booking a taxi on short notice might be difficult later on. The next day turned out to be heavy rain—making walking impossible—so I checked with reception about booking a taxi only to be met with an irritated response: "That's why I asked you yesterday during check-in." The tone felt dismissive and condescending despite us declining earlier—it left me feeling annoyed and uncomfortable. In the end, we used an app (GO) early enough to call for a taxi ourselves and returned via station. Hotels or ryokans are not just about clean facilities or food/drink quality; what makes guests want to return lies significantly in staff hospitality and thoughtfulness toward guests' experiences. This property has unique renovations blending old charm into its design—but sadly poor service overshadowed everything else. It reminded me that high-end hotels or ryokans include hospitality within their pricing—and unfortunately—I don’t think I'll ever return here again due to this disappointing experience.

    Management is disappointing.

    The overall impression of this Hotel is that it resembles a partially renovated Onsen Ryokan turned into a guesthouse. There are few staff members, some Facilities are broken, and cleaning and service are not thorough. Staff is unavailable from 22:00 to 7:00 at night. Breakfast includes a drink bar, but apart from carbonated drinks, only hot water and roasted green tea are available; milk or coffee is not provided.

    Wonderful Hottarakashi Onsen!

    I chose this place for a room with a private Onsen featuring natural free-flowing hot spring water. The hot spring water in Yugawara was soft and excellent, truly the best. If I had to mention one dissatisfaction, it would be that the waist of the women's room wear was tight. I will visit again.

    The accommodation experience was completely ruined...

    First, when traveling by car, it is difficult to find the parking lot without detailed guidance. There are several parking lots, but this time we were directed to the farthest one, and climbing up and down a steep slope to reach the accommodation was truly exhausting. The customer service itself was good; however, since there is no large public bath, the room's onsen becomes essential. Unfortunately, it stopped working for several hours. Once it stops, the water temperature drops rapidly, and even after it resumes functioning, the water volume is so low that you have to wait several more hours for it to reach a usable temperature again. Since we came for the onsen experience, this completely ruined our stay. The response afterward was also very disappointing.

    Girls' Trip

    It was our first time staying, and we were a group of four women on a trip. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were absolutely stunning. Dinner especially was visually beautiful and featured creative dishes with attention to detail that left us in awe of the taste. The Onsen had the perfect water temperature for me, offering a relaxing experience that felt like it melted away all stress. The room had a nostalgic retro atmosphere where we could enjoy peaceful moments. This accommodation is one I would truly love to visit again from the bottom of my heart.
