Compared to two year...
Compared to two years ago, it felt like staff training has not been fully maintained, in terms of both communication and attitude. It would also be helpful if the Hotel could provide at least a swimsuit spin dryer. The rooms and Facility were clean, and we really enjoyed the pool. The vegetables were fresh, and the bouillabaisse was very delicious.

Enjoy our buffet and all-you-can-drink in our newly expanded restaurant!
They upgraded us from the Room we had reserved, and we were able to relax comfortably in a more spacious Room. The restaurant used to feel a bit cramped, but the seating area has been expanded, and we thoroughly enjoyed the buffet and all-you-can-drink in a spacious dining area overlooking the garden. We’re also looking forward to the upcoming garden renovation. This was our fifth stay, and as always, the property was spotless, the Onsen was wonderful, and the staff were pleasant—nothing to complain about.

Birthday Trip
We stayed here for our daughter’s 3rd birthday trip. Our main plan was Yunessun, but perhaps because we told them in advance that it was a birthday trip, the staff prepared a handwritten birthday card and even a birthday plate at dinner—our daughter was so happy! There was also a kids’ space, which helped us make good use of our time, and the baths were very relaxing. During the rock-paper-scissors event, all the staff crouched down to her height to talk with her, which meant a lot to us. There was such a wide variety of food that we couldn’t finish everything. The facilities were clean and well maintained. We’re glad we made such wonderful memories! There were many other families around, so even if our child cried or got fussy, it felt normal and we didn’t have to worry too much. We’d love to come again!

My son was thrilled.
We stayed here to celebrate our son’s birthday. Thank you for your thoughtful attention to detail. We were able to create wonderful memories with our son.

Why? Why? Why?
Because my father is quite elderly, we requested a sofa seat during meals, but were told there were none and that only chairs were available. However, there were plenty of sofa seats. Why? The “all-you-can-drink” drink bar offered only unpleasant drinks. Why? Regular tea bags or even the machines at family restaurants are much better. When I asked to adjust the temperature, a foreign staff member either didn’t understand me or ignored me. Why? At Hotel Kowakien, even though this price isn’t necessarily expensive, it still felt overpriced. Why?

Mother-daughter trip
We had a wonderful time again. Thank you very much for upgrading our Room for my mother, who has difficulty walking. Both my mother and I truly appreciate it. The French toast at the breakfast buffet was outstanding! All the staff were kind, and this is our favorite Hotel in Hakone. We also received a commemorative message from a staff member to mark our visit—thank you so much. We hope to visit about two more times before the end of the year, and we’re really looking forward to it.

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Visit Again and Again
This was my second stay, and it’s one of my favorite Accommodations. What I liked: access to Yunessun, the lobby with its large atrium windows, the high-quality buffet (especially the sashimi and fried shrimp), unlimited alcohol, the beautiful garden, and the great views from the baths. What I’d like improved: since check-in procedures at the front desk start only a little before 3:00 p.m., many guests can’t get into their Room by 3:00; also, the dining area tables and layout feel a bit like a food court—adding partitions would create more privacy. I’d also be happy if checkout were at 11:00 a.m. Overall, I love this Accommodation and would like to visit regularly.

Hotel with Service Quality Issues
The service quality was quite poor. Honestly, it felt no different from a Business Hotel. If you ask whether guests have children at the time of Reservation, I expected that information to be properly reflected in the service. I was disappointed to find L-size loungewear laid out on the bed. Also, there were no child chairs available at either the dinner or breakfast buffet. On the other hand, some tables did have child chairs set up, so it may have been a coordination issue within the Hotel. At a typical Hotel, you would expect them to prepare the chairs in advance for the next morning based on what happened the day before, but that didn’t happen either.

We enjoyed our stay.
The staff were very friendly, and we had a great time. However, there was quite a long wait at breakfast, so I hope this can be improved.

They upgraded us to a Japanese-style room.
Since it was my first time at Kowakien, my expectations were too high. The Hotel facilities, location, and staff service were good. I really felt that there were many inbound travelers. The meals also felt geared toward inbound guests. However, watching the Hakone Ekiden on New Year’s and cheering on the runners as they passed in front of “Kowakien” on TV became a great memory for me.

This was our second ...
This was our second stay, the first in three years. The property was as clean as ever, and the staff were friendly, so we had a very pleasant stay. During our stay we had unlimited access to Yunessun and also received festival game tickets, which our child really enjoyed. Meals were excellent—drinks including alcohol were all-you-can-drink, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious, so we were very satisfied. The Room was spacious enough and well cleaned, but the only downside was that noise from the hallway and jumping/running sounds from the Room above carried more than expected, making it hard to fall asleep. Still, we would like to stay again.

A newly built Hotel that exudes elegance and pride.
Our family of four stayed for one night. Overall, it exceeded our expectations—thank you very much. I’ll skip reviewing Yunessun itself, but as a theme park for families with children, I think it has even more potential than the well-known Urayasu area. What we liked The Facility is new and feels great The cleaning was impressively thorough The luggage storage system was convenient The open-air bath water temperature was nicely warm even early in the morning We enjoyed the history display panels—they were interesting The staff are well trained, which made us feel at ease The buffet was a hit with our kids (soft-serve ice cream, an automatic rice-serving machine, French toast) Great variety of alcoholic drinks at the buffet Areas for improvement It would be better to wipe down the elevators more frequently (fingerprints from kids, raindrop marks on the step) We felt it was a bit cold near the windows in the buffet area due to the air conditioning The flow/traffic at the buffet gets slightly congested (perhaps turn the serving shelf on the right to face toward the windows) When we moved the beds to prevent our child from falling off, we found a small torn piece of a snack wrapper underneath The English wording on the toilet sign (“use up #1 before using #2,” etc.) felt slightly unnatural

Highly satisfied!!
I was first impressed by the high quality of the welcome drinks—sencha and coffee. I stayed for two nights, and both breakfast and dinner were plentiful and very delicious. Now that I’m starting to get a better sense of Hakone’s geography, I’d like to plan another visit in a different season.

The garden is currently under construction, and the view may be partially affected.
This was my first stay since the renovation. Compared with before, I think the interior has become cleaner and nicer. However, the buffet venue feels like a downgrade. The seating layout is poor, and part of it feels like a cafeteria. Perhaps it’s being geared toward group guests, but it no longer has the feel of a top-class Hotel. For better or worse, it seems to be positioned as family-friendly. If you’re looking for more hospitality, I assume the message is to choose Ten-yu instead. I thought the food was acceptable overall, but the steak was tough—my jaw got tired from chewing. What disappointed me most this time was the view from the Room. The website does mention construction, but I was surprised that most of what you see from the window is a construction site. I had been looking forward to enjoying my day off, so it was very disappointing. I hope this comment helps others when choosing an Accommodation.

We had a comfortable stay.
This was my first stay. There was a drink server near the front desk, which was convenient. The salon next to the large public bath is expensive to use, but it’s nice that there is a Room like that. At the breakfast buffet, the seafood rice bowl and mini hamburgers were delicious.

The Facility was excellent, but the breakfast buffet was a bit disappointing.
This was my first stay. Unfortunately, it poured with rain on the day we stayed, so we could hardly do any sightseeing in Hakone, which was disappointing. Still, as expected of Kowakien—the lobby was impressive, and the service, guest room, and Onsen were all excellent. What I liked: - The building has been recently rebuilt, and everything inside was very clean and comfortable. - The front desk team and the buffet staff worked efficiently and left a great impression. - There was a drink station with coffee, soft drinks, water, and hot water. I didn’t use it late at night, but it seemed likely available 24 hours. Having hot water readily available when I wanted tea was very helpful. (Boiling water in the in-room kettle felt like extra effort when I was exhausted and just wanted to rest.) - The large public bath was wonderful—spacious and relaxing, just as you’d expect from Kowakien. I would be even happier if there were one or two more baths here as well (not only at Yunessun). Points for improvement: - I don’t think there is a shop inside the Hotel. Yunessun across the way has a FamilyMart convenience store and restaurants, but if I remember correctly FamilyMart closed at 6:00 p.m., which is inconvenient when you want to buy something later. (There is a 7-Eleven down the hill from the Hotel, but going down—and then back up—that steep mountain road wasn’t realistic for us.) I was also surprised by the prices at the restaurant on an upper floor. Even considering inflation, they felt quite expensive for the portion sizes. - There were many international guests staying as well, so it was lively. I saw someone talking on the phone quite loudly outside their room before 10:00 p.m., which surprised me. Also, although I don’t know who it was, there were times when noise during the night woke me up. I’m not sure how much guidance is provided about this now, but I would appreciate careful reminders at check-in. - I had high expectations for breakfast because of how many items were offered at the buffet; however honestly some Business Hotels that I use often have fewer choices but better-tasting bread and side dishes. (I didn’t try the seafood rice bowl myself; my son did—and it looked delicious.) The scrambled eggs seemed to be made with tofu or something similar and weren’t appealing to me; since there is a live kitchen station anyway, I would prefer fried eggs or omelets instead. The simmered hijiki tasted like pre-made food and wasn’t good—please consider improving this. That’s all. If given another opportunity, I would like to visit again.

It was great that we could use Yunessun and the Onsen as well. The Room was clean and spacious. It was also nice that there was a playroom for kids to enjoy, and something like festival tickets for Yunessun.

Thank you for upgrad...
Thank you for upgrading our Room; it made for a very satisfying Onsen trip. The women’s bath was at just the right temperature, but my husband said the water felt lukewarm and he got cold. He isn’t someone who prefers very hot baths, so it must have been quite noticeable.

I think that’s enough now…
We stayed here with our child in January. Compared with our stay right after the renovation, it has clearly deteriorated. This is a personal review, written with the understanding that it’s a pool-focused, relatively budget Hotel. If you’re visiting Yunessun with kids, it’s one of the best options. ● What was good All staff we interacted with were Japanese and very pleasant. The only time we spoke to a non-Japanese staff member was when we called to request extra towels, and communication was smooth. The drink bar on the front desk floor has limited options and doesn’t taste good. The hair dryers in the large public bath have strong airflow. The Facility is also clean. ● What was not good There are no amenities in the Room. There are only basics such as soap, a toothbrush, cotton swabs/cotton pads, a hairbrush, cups, and toothpaste. No towels are provided at the large public bath; you have to bring them from your Room. In the outdoor bath area there is a small one-person tub; when you get in, many black particles float around. The view from the outdoor bath is only the sky. There is no swap between men’s and women’s baths. The decline in the food is severe. The sashimi and hitsumabushi have almost no flavor. The steak at the dinner buffet is tough and thin. Overall, the food is on the level of a cheap all-you-can-eat restaurant. The sausage(s) taste bad, almost like chemicals. However, there was always plenty available and nothing ran out. The desserts are also genuinely not good.

I was a bit disappointed.
When I stayed at Ten-yu and Kowakien before, I used taxis or a private car. This time, I used the Hotel Shuttle Service for the first time, but the driver on pickup seemed to be in a bad mood, handled my suitcase roughly, and did not feel very helpful. Even though many guests were waiting, there was no guidance at all. The stops were: Motoyu Mori-no-Yu → Geihinkan → Kihinkan → Yunessun → Ten-yu → Hotel Kowakien → Mikawaya Ryokan but this was not announced, and the driver stayed silent from start to finish, so I was very unsure where to get off. When we arrived it was still before check-in time, so there were no staff members to greet us. The self check-in machine had explanations only in Japanese. It made me nervous thinking about what foreign visitors who do not understand Japanese and are not comfortable with English would do. After reception hours started, the front desk staff felt distant and seemed like they wanted to finish quickly. Still, one young woman at reception who seemed Vietnamese was extremely kind—she carefully answered my questions that evening. The food was reasonably good. There are vending machines in the Hotel, which is convenient. This time I booked mainly for sightseeing rather than for the pool or Onsen. I wanted an affordable stay; Hotel Kowakien is reasonably priced, and since my stay at Ten-yu last summer was great and I knew the area well, I thought it would be convenient to make a Reservation here. However, even within the same group there is a huge difference between Ten-yu and Hotel Kowakien—price and service match each other after all—so it feels like you have to compromise on one or the other. The good points are that there are convenience stores on both sides when you leave Hotel Kowakien. If you go left, there is a local bus stop right away; it takes about 15 minutes to reach Hakone Shrine (Hakone-jinja), Hakone Port Town (Hakone Minato-machi), or Hakone Onshi Park (Hakone Onshi Koen), which is very convenient.

I’m glad I was able to visit with my mother this time.
This time, my mother was well enough to come with me. We had a great time, and the meals were delicious. However, since there was no ice available on each floor, it was inconvenient, so I paid an additional fee and asked to stay on the 4th floor. It happened to be the same Room I stayed in when I visited alone last time, and it was very relaxing—wonderful! My mother was also very happy. We plan to visit again in July, so I would like to request a Room on the 4th floor.

New and clean Hotel
The hotel was very clean and comfortable to stay in. Please note that there is no shop or alcohol vending machine inside the accommodation! We left our luggage at the hotel and went to Yunessun, but since it was our first time, we weren’t sure what to bring. We only brought swimsuits and bath towels, but bath towels are available at Yunessun, so they were unnecessary. A waterproof bag to hang by the poolside would make managing your belongings easier (I had one but accidentally left it at the hotel). Although Yunessun is close to the hotel, you have to cross a major road and go up a steep hill, so going back for forgotten items might be difficult. After returning from Yunessun, we wanted to buy snacks or drinks at the accommodation but were told we’d need to get them either from Yunessun or an outside convenience store. If I had known this earlier, I would have bought them at Yunessun beforehand... Just something to keep in mind! Other than that small inconvenience, the meals were delicious and it was a great accommodation overall!

Last-Minute Solo Trip
I originally planned to visit with my mother, but she fell ill late at night on the day of our trip, so I ended up taking my first solo journey. Thankfully, she recovered quickly, but due to her age, she stayed home. Since my mother was really looking forward to this trip, we hope to visit together again around May. Even alone, I enjoyed various activities at Kowakien where I've visited many times before—like Mori no Yu and Yunessun. At Yunessun, I even met Santa working hard in the sauna! The meals were absolutely delicious. However, being alone did feel a bit lonely. The Room was upgraded considering my mother's mobility issues and it was incredibly spacious for just one person—but it allowed me to relax comfortably. Thank you very much for that. Next time, I'll be sure to visit with my mother!

My first visit to Hakone was truly satisfying!
We went on a family trip to Hakone, a place we had always wanted to visit as our children grew older. The Hotel was luxurious, with beautiful decorations at the front desk and a stunning large Christmas tree. The Room for four had two double beds and wasn’t very spacious, but it was clean, stylish, and had a sense of freshness. We were lucky to see the lanterns by chance, which were truly moving. We also received tickets for Yunessun; the kids enjoyed the pool while adults relaxed in Mori no Yu. The highlight was definitely the dinner and breakfast buffet. Despite being a buffet, everything was delicious—salads and okra dishes were well-chilled and fresh. The steak was especially outstanding! The all-you-can-drink alcohol option was great too; however, 90 minutes felt short—we would have appreciated 2 hours instead!

Newly Renovated Simple Hotel
I thought it was a traditional hotel, but the entire building has been renovated into a simple and user-friendly hotel. The onsen was great. There are no shops or regular restaurants inside; only a buffet-style restaurant exclusively for reservers. It felt like half of the guests were foreign tourists. The buffet food was below average, but the free alcohol was appreciated. The room was very comfortable, and the bed was spacious and nice! For Hakone, I think the cost performance is good.

Wonderful Hotel
This was my second stay, and it was excellent. My child was also very satisfied with the experience from Yunessun to Hotel Kowakien. However, I have one concern: when I visited the hotel to leave my luggage before check-in, the young woman at the cloakroom lacked friendliness, which surprised me. Being greeted without a smile upon arrival can be disappointing. Aside from that, everyone else provided great service, and the bathhouse, bathroom, and guest room were all wonderful.

The Yunessun package requires proper cold weather gear!
The accommodation was new and clean. The meals were buffet-style with a wide variety, and except for the limited selection of fruits, it was quite good. However, compared to dinner time, the breakfast staff seemed less cheerful. Additionally, there was a device on the 2nd floor where children could freely draw on a projection screen. They loved it and were very engaged in drawing. However, although the operating hours were listed as 7am–8pm, it wasn't turned on even close to 9am in the morning, prompting children to ask for assistance. The Yunessun package was enjoyable; while indoor areas were fine, moving between some Onsen baths (e.g., scenic open-air baths) felt too cold during early November. Proper warm clothing for transfers is absolutely necessary!
