    On the rooftop, there is an open-air sky garden; on the top floor, a large public bath; and in your Room, an open-air bath.

    The Room had an open-air bath, and drinks were free—everything was wonderful. Breakfast was also delicious. However, since I went sightseeing until night and didn’t spend much time at the Hotel, next time I’d like to stay with a Plan that lets me enjoy more of the Hotel experience. The Soraniwa Terrace is amazing. In the morning, I took a drink from my Room and enjoyed a footbath while taking in the views of Higashiyama and the Kamo River. If breakfast could be served here, it might feel even more open and refreshing. I gave four stars not because of the Hotel, but because my own Plan wasn’t ideal.

    It was comfortable.

    Even though it’s right in the city, it was very quiet. It’s in Shijo, with easy access to the main sightseeing spots. Even on the first floor, the space is well designed and doesn’t feel too cramped. You can also just go upstairs for the Onsen. The bed linens were excellent—I could have stayed in bed all day. Kyoto is usually all about sightseeing for us, but this time we also enjoyed a relaxing Hotel stay. Breakfast was delicious as well. It was a great-value Plan, so we were lucky to be able to stay. We’d love to visit again—thank you for your hospitality.

    My daughter and I stayed here together. The Room had a private Onsen, and we were able to relax completely. The breakfast was also excellent and truly impressed us. We would definitely like to stay again.

    I stayed at Soraniwa...

    I stayed at Soraniwa Terrace twice before and was very satisfied overall, so this time I made a Reservation to relax at the annex. In conclusion, I don’t feel it was worth the price. The room furnishings were excellent, as you’d expect from an annex—high-quality pajamas, bathrobes, yukata, and plenty of items that made the stay comfortable. However, from there on it was often disappointing. In particular, the bathroom areas didn’t seem thoroughly cleaned; there were unpleasant odors in several places. The toilet had a strong ammonia-like smell (it felt like areas out of sight hadn’t been cleaned), and when I noticed an odor in the shower booth as well, it seemed to be coming from various spots including the chair legs. As for the Onsen itself, given that it’s in central Kyoto, I suppose that’s to be expected. The view from the open-air bath also wasn’t anything special since it isn’t on a high floor. I reset my expectations and looked forward to dinner most of all. Since I wanted to focus on the meal, I asked for water instead of alcohol—but it smelled fishy. It made me think the glasses hadn’t been properly washed. After everything up to that point, I could only expect more issues. Even though there were only three parties dining, we were seated right next to each other in a row, so everyone’s conversations carried over and it wasn’t relaxing. Because of where we were seated, the loud commentary from the father at the next table about each dish echoed constantly. The food itself also didn’t suit my taste—overall too heavily seasoned and greasy. His loud praise for every dish clashed so much with how I felt that I couldn’t settle down at all. I kept hoping staff would either ask him to lower his voice or move our seats farther apart, but nothing changed until the end. Breakfast was straightforward and reassuringly fine. One service moment stood out: someone at a nearby table dropped their dessert fork and no one reacted—even though three staff members were standing close by when I glanced around. Maybe my expectations for service are simply too high. Because there was a good discount rate this time and I could make a Reservation more affordably than usual, perhaps that affected what was provided in terms of room condition or service—but even taking that into account overall, I don’t think I would return next time.

    A truly luxurious Ryokan with exceptional hospitality.

    This was our second stay since last year. We were impressed last year as well, but this year we truly enjoyed an even more relaxing time thanks to the wonderful hospitality of the staff. Of course, the cuisine was also top-class Kyoto kaiseki. We will be back again during the Obon holidays next year. We are truly grateful.

    An Accommodation you’ll want to return to again and again with peace of mind!

    This was my third stay, and each time I visit, I’m reminded of how wonderful this Ryokan is. The staff’s warm smiles and thoughtful hospitality, the comfortable Room, the soothing Onsen, the breathtaking views from the guest rooms and rooftop terrace, and the beautifully crafted dishes served at the dining venue “Higashiyama”—everything made for a truly satisfying stay. The location is also very convenient. On the day of my stay, I was also able to enjoy seeing a Gion Festival mikoshi procession, which made it an unexpectedly lucky experience. I would love to visit again.

    We made wonderful memories.

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother’s 77th birthday as well. Since we had informed them in advance, they prepared a small gift on the day and also provided a celebratory plate during the meal, along with warm congratulatory words, which made it a wonderful memory. The large public bath was relaxing, and we were also able to enjoy the Room bath (open-air bath) comfortably.

    To be able to enjoy an Onsen right in the heart of Kyoto.

    I was planning a trip to Kyoto and wanted to enjoy an Onsen, but most options were far from the city center. Just as I was about to give up, I found availability and made a Reservation right away. What I liked - Both the in-room Onsen bath and the large public bath were very satisfying - A great variety of drinks - The food was excellent What concerned me - Small details stood out, such as pilling on the haori jacket and some stains on the wall - At check-in, I did not receive the Diamond member benefits (it seemed they were forgotten) Overall, it was a good stay. As a bit of advice for future guests: - You may not want to expect much in terms of views from the open-air bath. (If you want to enjoy the scenery, try the rooftop bar.) - Taller guests may not be able to fully stretch their legs in the in-room bath. This time, thanks to point rewards and other offers, I was able to stay at a great value. I would love to stay again if I have another opportunity.

    The Best Location and Onsen

    This was our fourth stay for the Gion Festival Yoiyama. As always, the Room was clean, and we had a wonderful time with an in-room Onsen. Breakfast was delicious, and the festival was close by, so we really enjoyed it. However, it was disappointing that we couldn’t borrow a colored yukata this year, which we look forward to every time. On our first visit, several options were brought to our Room for us to choose from. After that, we selected them at the front desk. In previous years we were also able to borrow cute geta sandals and hair accessories, but this year we were told it wasn’t included in our Plan and they couldn’t accommodate us. Since it hadn’t been part of any specific Plan before, I realize now that you had kindly offered this as a special courtesy until last time. Because I had been looking forward to it so much, I felt quite disappointed. If there is a Plan that includes these items, I would be very happy if you could offer it on IKYU as well.

    We chose this Accommodation after seeing it in an email from IKYU.

    On my first trip to Kyoto in a while, I stayed here for the first time. Just as I had seen in the emails, the Room offers a wonderful view of Higashiyama. It’s also in Shijo-Kawaramachi, close to Gion and very convenient for exploring on foot. The staff were excellent, and breakfast featured many small dishes—each one flavorful with dashi and delicious. Even the final dessert felt distinctly Kyoto. I would definitely like to stay here again if I have the chance to visit Kyoto.

    Thanks to the 2:00 P...

    Thanks to the 2:00 PM check-in service, we were able to relax and enjoy the view toward Higashiyama from the rooftop. It was a wonderful time with a beer in hand. The Room had an Onsen bath, and opening the shoji screens made it feel like an open-air bath. Being able to soak anytime was a very welcome service. This was a highly satisfying Hotel, and I would like to stay again.

    We had a wonderful trip.

    Convenient and excellent!

    My mother and I traveled together as two women. We stayed here before as well. It’s very convenient, located right in the center of Kyoto. The Onsen is rare for Kyoto, and the water quality is perfect for soothing a tired body. The staff are very kind, and it’s our favorite Accommodation—both my mother’s and mine.

    I was satisfied with the Onsen in the Room, the complimentary drinks in the refrigerator, and the footbath. I also found it convenient that there is a private back entrance exclusively for the annex. I stayed while pregnant this time, and since I had informed you in advance, I truly appreciated your thoughtful accommodations regarding my meals.

    I’ve found my go-to Accommodation for trips to Kyoto.

    Everything was wonderful—I truly feel I found the best Accommodation. I was so happy I almost cried. I didn’t want to leave... Below are the highlights, especially what I loved most: - The Room size was just right (since I was traveling solo). - There were 16 complimentary drinks in the fridge (beer, wine, juice, sparkling water, tea, etc.), all free to enjoy. - For the beer selection, having both local craft beer and Asahi—and even chilled glasses—was a fantastic bonus. - The Onsen left my skin silky smooth and felt unbelievably relaxing. - It was so quiet and comfortable that it felt like there were no other guests nearby. - There is a dedicated entrance for the annex building, making access to Kawaramachi and Gion even more convenient. - The in-room TV allows you to log in to Prime Video and Netflix—perfect for a comfortable late night (lol). - There are AC outlets and USB ports under the sofa, so you can relax on the sofa while charging your devices! (Most Accommodations only have charging spots near the bed or by the entrance, which makes it hard to charge while using your devices.) - From the open-air bath, you can look down over Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the streets of Gion—something you rarely get. Note: I stayed alone as a woman on a weekday right after Golden Week. My Room was a double room on the first floor.

    About the Onsen Facility.

    We stayed during Golden Week. The food, the Room, and the service were all excellent. However, one concern was that someone entered the Onsen wearing a swimsuit, which left us confused. We understood that swimsuits are not allowed at this Ryokan, so it was disappointing that we couldn’t relax during our bath. As I imagine there are many guests from overseas, I feel we could stay more comfortably if you could strengthen verbal guidance at check-in and provide clearer signage and regular checks in the bathing area.

    A breathtaking panoramic view of Higashiyama that even Kyoto locals will be moved by.

    The Soraniwa Terrace and the large public bath offer breathtaking views of Higashiyama—impressive even for Kyoto locals. There were many international guests, and perhaps because of that, the large public bath was pleasantly quiet. It would have been even better with a sauna. The meals, the spacious Room (Annex), and the Facility were all excellent. The location is outstanding as well.

    The open-air Onsen bath was great.

    I stayed here because the Accommodation offers Rooms with views of the Kamogawa River and an open-air bath. The Onsen was gentle on the body and very relaxing—exactly as expected. I had consulted in advance about ingredients I cannot eat, and their response was excellent. It seems the Hotel has several exits, but this wasn’t explained at check-in, so I think it would be even better if that information were provided. I walked to Kennin-ji Temple, and it was quite close when I happened to use a back exit I found.

    A Hotel in an excellent location.

    The welcome sweets were small but delicious. The Room has large glass windows, offering a great view. It also has a small balcony, which was a nice touch. The refrigerator was well stocked with everything from alcohol to juice, and the complimentary drinks were much appreciated. Also, three 1-liter carton packs of water were provided, which was more than enough. It was helpful to be able to borrow a desk lamp for studying. The location is extremely convenient for getting anywhere, and it’s the kind of place you want to stay at again. However, one thing was very disappointing: the washbasin area and the shower area in the bathroom had an unpleasant fishy smell, like slugs. This kind of odor comes from inadequate cleaning—if grime isn’t properly removed even after rinsing, it can happen at home as well. I would like them to thoroughly clean each time using mold remover or bleach if necessary. It smelled so strongly every time I went into the washroom that I didn’t even want to wash dishes there. Despite all the other great points, this was truly unfortunate.

    The Hotel was excellent, but depending on the time, all the seats for the footbath at Soraniwa Terrace were full, and having to wait in a seat behind for nearly 30 minutes felt especially long on a cold day.

    This was the most disappointing service I have experienced at any luxury Hotel. The front desk was especially poor. There was no guidance on where to check in or out, and we were not informed of the breakfast hours. Even when I asked to confirm the lounge hours, I was simply told, “It’s written inside.” The staff were also unhelpful with directions and other information. We had been looking forward to this commemorative trip, and while the Facility and Onsen were great, it ended up being an unpleasant experience overall.

    I visited Kyoto for ...

    I visited Kyoto for the first time in a while to see a photo exhibition at a nearby temple. At first, I made a Reservation at a Hotel directly connected to Kyoto Station, but I chose this Accommodation because it is close to the temple, has an Onsen, and seemed perfect for exploring the city on foot. The view from Soraniwa Terrace while soaking in the footbath was outstanding. The open-air bath in the Room was available anytime as many times as I liked, and the bathrobe was very comfortable. This time I only had breakfast, but it was carefully prepared and truly delicious. The proprietress also suggested sightseeing Plans; revisiting Sanjusangendo after so long was breathtaking, and at nearby Chishaku-in we were there alone at first, so we could enjoy the garden and sliding-door paintings at our own pace in peaceful silence. Thanks to you, it was a wonderful trip to Kyoto. Thank you very much.

    Room with Views of Higashiyama Landmarks

    Choosing our Room based on these Reviews was the right decision. The view overlooking Kiyomizu-dera, Kennin-ji, and Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto’s Higashiyama area was outstanding. The Hotel is near Shijo-Kawaramachi Station with excellent access, yet just behind it are Kiyamachi Street and Pontocho—perfect for a stroll—so even on a two-night trip we felt we truly enjoyed Kyoto. The rooftop terrace with a welcome drink while soaking in the foot bath was wonderful, and both breakfast and dinner were delicious, beautifully presented, and superb. We would definitely like to visit again.

    The location was exc...

    The location was excellent, and even though it’s in the heart of the city, this Accommodation was perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy a natural Onsen. Since I made my Reservation at the last minute, I couldn’t dine on-site, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby. I was able to visit a bistro and a café I’d been curious about for a while, and because there is an Onsen in the Room, I could soak without worrying about time. The Room was very clean and comfortable, but there was one small issue. When looking up from underneath, the hole on the side of the washbasin bowl was completely black. It’s probably at a height you wouldn’t notice unless you bend down while cleaning, but since everything else was so spotless, it would have been perfect if that area had been cleaned as well.

    This was my first time staying in a private room with an open-air bath, and there was nothing disappointing at all—I had a very comfortable stay. The staff were kind and pleasant. The food was also very delicious, and I was extremely satisfied. I’d love to come again if I have the chance. As for Soraniwa Terrace, I think it’s better not to set your expectations too high, but since I wasn’t expecting much, the footbath felt great and I was satisfied. Looking back now, when I asked on the rooftop if there were any hot drinks available, it would have been nice if someone had said they were available in the lounge. (Sorry if taking drinks from the lounge up to the rooftop is not allowed.)

    Third Stay at the Annex

    I already knew how wonderful this Ryokan is from my two previous stays, but the rates are quite high, so I can’t visit often. This time, we were lucky to find a significant discount and stayed with our family. The welcome drink while soaking in the rooftop terrace foot bath was lovely, and the Room also had an open-air bath, so we had a very comfortable stay. Breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes and we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious Japanese meal. There is also a Takashimaya nearby, so we had a great time right up until check-out. If I find another discount, I’d love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    Attentive service

    The Room's open-air bath was already filled with hot water, making it ready to use immediately, which was great. Having underfloor heating in the powder room and shower room is a nice touch for cold days. Even knowing it's cold, you'll feel drawn to the sky garden terrace. It's impressive that warm clothing is provided even if you forget your coat. The Kyoto-style kaiseki breakfast at Kappo Higashiyama was delicious and satisfying. The attentive service throughout the property and the staff's courteous hospitality were truly remarkable.

    It was a very comfortable Hotel.

    Used during a trip back home. We stayed with our 0-year-old child and experienced almost no stress, making our stay very comfortable. The room design, which allowed space for crawling, was perfect for a small child. However, there was some hair and dust present, so we hope the inspection level improves in the future. The service during check-in and check-out was excellent as well. It’s a hotel we would definitely like to use again next time. Thank you very much!
