    This is my third stay.

Close to the airport with delicious meals, and our children love the nearby Facility called Sorai, so we keep coming back. It felt like there were fewer books than before. The Onsen was very crowded, so we returned to our Room once. We would appreciate being able to check crowd levels on an in-room tablet or similar device. We plan to visit again later this year.

    A different sunset every day!

We took a family trip in early August with our 4th-grade daughter. We were blessed with great weather and enjoyed the sunset sinking behind the mountains! The library was breathtaking. Even if the weather hadn’t been so perfect, you can enjoy many days here—relaxing in your Room or spending time reading in the library. It would have been nice to have rental bicycles for elementary school kids, but the three of us still enjoyed cycling together. The pace of a bicycle—neither by car nor on foot—is just right, as if you can hear the town breathing. The prefectural pool near the airport is also recommended from the afternoon! Yamagata City has many wonderful inland spots, but I highly recommend visiting Shonai on the Sea of Japan side, especially Tsuruoka. The food is unbelievably delicious!

I was soothed by the peaceful rural scenery.

This is a Hotel I’d wanted to visit for a long time. We stayed in a maisonette Room. It was a bit disappointing that it wasn’t a Room with the view we had hoped for (it was Obon season, so it was the last available Room), but the rural scenery was breathtaking. Our family enjoyed a pleasant walk. The food was also delicious—both dinner and the breakfast buffet were excellent. We also enjoyed the library and had a very relaxing day. One area that may need improvement—also mentioned in other Reviews—is the bath facilities. Considering how many guests use them, there were too few washing stations, and we had to wait until others finished. It was quite inconvenient… There is a hair dryer in the Room, but there were only a few near the Onsen area as well, so many people were waiting. On the other hand, we heard that the men’s bath was not crowded. We’d love to visit again in another season. Thank you for your hospitality.

A breathtaking view of rice ears swaying in the breeze, paired with meals that make the most of fresh local ingredients.

The view from the Room was outstanding. A breathtaking panorama of lush green rice fields spread out beyond the window. Moonlight enjoyed from the soothing open-air bath, and the pairing of Yamagata ingredients with wine was exceptional. From amuse-bouche to dessert, everything was deeply satisfying. After breakfast, we took a walk around the rice paddies and breathed in deeply as the breeze swept through the countryside. It was truly healing for both body and mind. Next time, I’d love to come back to see the golden fields.

This is a Hotel where you can relax and unwind.

Set in the countryside, it offers a soothing view. The breakfast buffet was also delicious, featuring local vegetables and dairy products. I come here every year. It’s a wonderful Hotel that makes you feel at ease.

    Overall, it’s wonderful.

The common areas are spacious and relaxing. There are also a few spots where you can sit and look outside, so you can take it easy. The changing area by the bath was a bit dim—was that part of the design? Also, I felt the lower Room was quite humid. Maybe because it’s above rice fields? I also saw three camel crickets.

Satisfied with everything except the bath.

I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay from a weekday into the weekend. The Room was clean and comfortable, and the restaurant staff were very hospitable, so I was able to use the facilities pleasantly. However, there were some disappointing points about the Onsen. The bath area had only 5–6 washing stations and just 3–4 hair dryers, so during busy times the wait was long and very inconvenient. Also, since the open-air bath faces rice fields, I understand that insects are somewhat unavoidable, but seeing three spider webs lined up within arm’s reach gave me the impression that cleaning was not thorough. It felt unpleasant and I couldn’t go near it. In addition, some spa members continued talking loudly and occupied the hair dryers for a long time. Some even used their smartphones while using the hair dryer, which made me feel uneasy about potential privacy issues such as covert filming. Also, from around 8:00 a.m., I could hear vacuuming near my guest room as well as conversations among housekeeping staff, which woke me up. In my Room, my pillow was positioned near the entrance area, so it was especially noisy. I would like vacuuming to be done after checkout at 10:00 a.m. instead.

    The meals are delicious.

This was my second visit. Last time I came in winter, so there were no rice plants and the paddies were muddy. I wanted to return during the lush green season. Bathing and dining while looking out over the rice fields and the distant mountains was truly refreshing. Both dinner and breakfast featured plenty of local ingredients, and everything was delicious. I will definitely visit again.

    Not worth the price

I stayed on a breakfast-only Plan. Dinner might be excellent, but the breakfast was just average. The Room felt like the bed was right there as soon as you opened the door, and the spa was small, so it was more disappointing than I expected. () Getting to/from the Accommodation is fine if you have a private car, but if you use public transportation, it is far from the station and there is no Shuttle Service. Taxis can fill up quickly, so be sure to make a Reservation in advance. It may be suitable for school nature study trips.

    Breakfast is excellent.

First visit. Since it’s Suiden Terrace, I stayed in a Room with a rice paddy view—absolutely the right choice. I made it in time for sunset and was amazed by the scenery. The view the next morning was also wonderful, and breakfast on the terrace was great. The selection and service were both excellent, so I had a very comfortable stay. Next time I’d like to enjoy dinner, the café, and the bar as well. Unfortunately, my stay fell on the bar’s regular closing day. The Onsen had an unusual smell, but it left my skin smooth and silky. The Onsen mineral composition notice was posted in a hard-to-see place, and with the lighting being dim it was difficult to read. Maybe they’re prioritizing a stylish display. Also, my luggage was heavy, so getting from the parking lot across the road to check-in was a bit inconvenient. That’s about all that stood out. A morning walk also seems nice. I can’t wait to go again soon.

The delicious, generous portions of food deserve top marks.

I’d been following this place for a while and had wanted to stay, so I was happy to finally visit. However, because my expectations were high, my disappointment was also significant. The meals (breakfast and lunch) and the view from the restaurant were truly excellent—I would gladly return again if I have the chance. The restaurant staff were also very kind and approachable, which left a great impression. At Suiden Terrace, many of the women working in different areas of the Hotel (including housekeeping) were very polite, always smiling, and attentive—I felt they were doing their best. However, the man who handled my check-in at first made me feel as though my questions as a first-time guest were a bother. For me, what ultimately makes a Hotel is “the people.” I was also looking forward to the large public bath, but the route there was extremely hard to understand, and I was taken aback by both the layout and how it was maintained. It wasn’t clear where to put shoes or whether that was the correct place for valuables. The changing room is narrow with four vertical tiers of lockers/shelves—very inconvenient—and having it immediately after climbing the entrance stairs also seems problematic in terms of flow. In addition, tiles were left peeling off in various places in the bath area—not only around the washing stations but even inside the tub. Some floor tiles at the washing stations were also missing, causing rinsed water to pool instead of draining away. Even though the water itself is good quality, it didn’t feel relaxing enough to soak slowly. (For reference: when choosing between similar Hotels, I’m willing to pay more for one with a large public bath. I also use spas as a change of pace.) With conditions like this, I worry it may actually create a negative impression overall. The concept behind Suiden Terrace is wonderful—I hope many people can enjoy Shonai’s delicious food—and inside feels spacious and comfortable: you can sit back and enjoy the scenery or browse many books. It’s an exciting new concept with real potential; that’s exactly why I hope more attention will be given to getting these basics right as well.

    I previously stayed ...

I previously stayed at this Shigeru Ban–designed Hotel alone in summer, and this time I came with my husband. We happened to find an available Room two days before and decided to book. We had dinner at Alchecciano, and the terrace breakfast the next morning—enjoying the view of Mt. Gassan—was delicious and very refreshing. However, a group of three women returned around midnight the night before and made a lot of noise in the hallway; even after they went into their Room, their voices carried, and it was too loud for us to sleep. It reminded me that when traveling as a group of women, we should be careful not to disturb others without realizing it. The Hotel’s location is excellent, and I was impressed by Tsuruoka’s overall town planning.

The meals and the bath were excellent.

Although it was the busy Golden Week period, it didn’t feel overly crowded, and we had a very pleasant stay. Choosing the plan with breakfast and dinner for both nights was absolutely the right decision. We opted for the five-glass pairing with dinner, and it was so creative and delicious that we chose the pairing on both evenings. On the second night, our daughter tried the soft-drink pairing as well and really enjoyed how good it was. The bath was also wonderful, with a view you can’t experience anywhere else—it felt like becoming a frog in a rice paddy. It’s great to bring towels to the bath, but I think it would be even better if there were separate towels for use around the Room sink area. We didn’t have much time this trip, but I would have liked to enjoy the library a bit more. If bringing in drinks isn’t allowed, I’d appreciate having something like a coffee server available after the bar closes, even if there is an additional charge. In any case, this is a Hotel I would definitely like to visit again—next time to relax and spend more time inside the Hotel itself.

    The meals were delicious.

I stayed for two nights with a friend. We wanted to relax and enjoy Mr. Saka’s architecture and the view of the water-filled rice paddies. At that time, only part of the area in front of the Hotel had been flooded, but it was still enough for taking photos at night. The meals were delicious and satisfying, featuring fresh vegetables and ingredients from Yamagata. The Room was spacious with good lighting, making it very comfortable. The paper-tube furniture is unique to an architect’s design, but unfortunately the backrest of a chair in our Room was slightly broken. The building design is interesting, but if you want to use the Onsen, older guests may get lost because the corridors are complex and there are many stairs. Our Room was in a wing diagonally opposite the Onsen, so it was far—I don’t think my father (in his 80s) could manage it. If you ask, they may be able to accommodate you.

    I checked in early b...

I checked in early because I wanted to relax. At the front desk, I was told, “We are assisting guests in order, so please wait,” and I waited. However, guests who arrived after me were checked in first. When my name was finally called, there was no explanation for why the order changed. Although I had made a Reservation for one night, I was told it was for two nights, which confused me. In the end, it turned out to be a one-night stay due to a confirmation mistake by the front desk staff, but there was no apology, which was disappointing. Other than that, nothing else bothered me and I had a comfortable stay. Breakfast the next morning was very delicious. Only the check-in experience was truly disappointing.

It was my first time visiting.

This was my first trip to Tsuruoka, Yamagata, and my first stay at SHONAI HOTEL SUIDEN TERRASSE. Unfortunately, in mid-April the rice paddies were not yet filled with water. The terrace interior was bright and very clean. We had dinner there and it was delicious. I was surprised that while there were only a few guests at dinner, breakfast was extremely busy. I would love to visit again.

The bathhouse is inconveniently far away, and despite the wheelchair-accessible sign, there is no consideration for accessibility.

The checkout process was disappointing. I stayed for two nights to attend an event at the neighboring Facility. When I handed in my key in the morning, other attendees were lined up as well, so I returned the key and left my suitcase. I asked, “My payment is already settled, right?” The front desk staff told me, “Please just pay the Hot Spring Tax.” I said, “I’ll stop by the front desk again later when I buy souvenirs,” and hurried to the venue. Around noon I returned to the front desk to pay for souvenirs and the Hot Spring Tax, but was told, “Your checkout has not been completed, so we will charge you an extension fee of 2,200 yen.” I had no choice but to pay it; however, when I said “It’s already settled, right?” I intended that as checking out. I am also an IKYU Diamond member—surely a one-hour extension would be possible? But they replied that normal checkout is 10:00 and they had extended it to 11:00; since it was already 12:00 it was one hour over. They also said they called me many times but could not reach me. In fact, I lost my phone at Haneda Airport and had already informed them at check-in that if it was found, please contact me through the Hotel—so calling me directly did not make sense. I didn’t want to argue at the front desk so I paid anyway. This is a Hotel I have stayed at many times before, which made this response especially disappointing. Also, because of mobility issues I usually book an accessible Room; however this time it was a standard twin with no grab bars by the sink/toilet/bathroom. I managed by keeping my walker close by, but it was inconvenient. When heading to the baths they were almost on the opposite side of the building. On top of that there were steps at every bath entrance. Carrying my walker up each step somehow got me inside and able to bathe; however there were no care chairs in the bathing area either. If I sat down there would be no way for me to stand back up again, so I showered standing. I would like you to improve Facilities for guests with disabilities. As for restrooms as well—the one marked with male/female symbols may be intended for wheelchair users—but it is narrow; when bringing in a walker it is hard to close the door and difficult even to reach for the lock. Someone with more severe disabilities likely could not use it. I understand you are renovating your bathing Facilities this time; if you could eliminate steps and keep at least one shower chair with a backrest available in each washing area (or always on hand), that would help greatly. Since my work has ended this year I won’t be staying again anyway—but because this used to be a favorite Hotel of mine, this experience was truly disappointing. That said, breakfast buffet offered plenty of vegetables and good variety as always—I enjoyed it again this time too (though since we stayed two nights I'd have liked some changes). Dinner was delicious as well.

    Tsuruoka Gastronomy Hotel

Although it was a quiet winter season as the snow began to melt, we were extremely satisfied with our stay. Wonderful architecture by Shigeru Ban! A comfortable, compactly designed Room. Excellent cuisine showcasing the best seafood and mountain delicacies of the Shonai region! And the Onsen, just the way we like it—nice and hot—warmed us up even in the semi-open-air bath. The simply flavored breakfast was also outstanding!

    Excellent breakfast!

During dinner, each table had a designated staff member, so when I asked for water, I had to wait for the specific staff to come. It would have been nice if they were more flexible in such situations. However, breakfast the next morning was truly impressive! Since it was autumn, it was the season for freshly harvested rice and "Imoni" (a traditional stew). There were four types of rice available (Tsuyahime, Yukiwakamaru, Haenuki, and brown rice), which surprised me. This was my first time experiencing such an accommodation. I tried small portions of each type of rice to compare them and found that Tsuyahime suited my taste best! I usually don't eat Western-style breakfasts often but tend to pick scrambled eggs and bacon at hotel buffets. This time though, I regretted it a little because the vegetable dishes were abundant and incredibly delicious—I wished I'd saved room in my stomach for them instead of bacon (since I'm a light eater). The Imoni stew changed daily between inland style (soy sauce & beef) and Shonai style (miso & pork). That day’s soy sauce-based version was served—and it was absolutely delicious! Even though I was full, I went back for seconds. It was my first time trying Yamagata's Imoni stew; both my friend and I preferred the soy sauce flavor over miso (we tried miso-flavored Imoni at another accommodation but couldn’t quite tell how it differed from Kenchin soup). The breakfast focused on local ingredients with a farm-to-table concept from Yamagata Prefecture—it made for an excellent start to the day!

    Hotel for Multiple Night Stay

An interesting hotel designed by Shigeru Ban. Surrounded by rice fields, it's a relaxing environment. The staff is average, but the restaurant staff provides excellent service. The evening course meal is comparable to a five-star hotel—well-crafted yet approachable, and solo dining is perfectly fine. Dinner was delicious, and the breakfast buffet was also great. The Onsen large bath area offers three wonderful options. For a multiple night stay, you can enjoy private use of the facilities after checkout when it's less crowded. When you have free time, you can relax or enjoy the extensive library-like collection of books available. Rooms with terraces are highly recommended!

    The meals are delicious.

Overall, it was a comfortable hotel. However, the layout involves a lot of movement between floors—entrance on the first floor, front desk on the second floor, and the bath on the first floor via a connecting corridor—so the flow of movement is not very convenient. This might be a bit challenging for elderly guests or those with children. Starting with the downsides, the highlight of this accommodation seems to be the sauna and bath, but I felt the cleanliness was lacking. I used the bath just before it closed at midnight, and the area around the sinks was cluttered with water server cups overflowing from the trash bin, and there was hair everywhere. The drainage in the bath was clogged, and the trash bins in the bathroom were overflowing as well. During busy seasons, it might be a good idea to schedule light cleaning or trash collection before midnight. Although it was high season and crowded, the actual experience felt quite different from the photos, which left a negative impression. Additionally, there were two people chatting while using hairdryers in the narrow sink area. They were there before I arrived and still there 30 minutes later when I left. Overall, the accommodation seemed more suited for younger groups of friends rather than adults or families. That said, as someone traveling with children, the casual atmosphere was appreciated compared to a more formal setting. On the positive side, the open-air bath was fantastic. The moon and stars were beautiful, the surroundings were quiet, and I could relax and enjoy the bath. Some guests were enjoying the outdoor air after the sauna, and it looked very refreshing. For dinner and breakfast, we dined at the hotel’s restaurant, and the food was excellent! Dinner was a course meal, and it was a rare opportunity to enjoy a leisurely meal. The restaurant was spacious, yet the staff were attentive. As we were traveling with children, we might have caused some inconvenience, and I felt a bit apologetic about that. In the morning, the terrace was open, and since it was a sunny day, it was a pleasant way to start the day. The buffet looked so delicious that I ended up taking a lot, and everything was genuinely tasty. It was a delightful touch to be able to choose between two types of rice, Tsuyahime and Yukiwakamaru. Shonai seems to be a region rich in local ingredients. I found the focus on local production for local consumption very charming. It seems the restaurant also offers lunch and café options, so I’d love to visit again on another occasion.

    Relax and unwind.

Stayed in a different Room with a countryside view the night before. I wanted to relax on the terrace, but it was too hot to do so. Instead, I relaxed on the bed. Having access to cold water and ice anytime is wonderful during summer! There are so many books I want to read, and I also wanted to enjoy the bath—there just wasn’t enough time! I had a relaxing stay. Thank you very much!

    Hmm

Check-in at 15:30 tends to be crowded as everyone wants to enter the Hotel early, but there were no clear directions for the queue. When I lined up behind others, people kept going directly to the front desk. It turned out that you need to give your name at the front desk and wait to be called. When I reported a forgotten phone in the bathhouse restroom, the response felt dismissive. The breakfast was delicious, but please consider improving your service approach.

    Golden countryside scenery

A trip to Yamagata for a late summer vacation. I was looking forward to staying at this Hotel. The room was compact but did not feel cramped, offering a simple and clean atmosphere that made it comfortable to stay in. Although I reserved a room without a view, I was grateful to be assigned one with a great view. The room amenities only included coffee packs; adding tea or black tea bags would make it perfect. While soaking in the bath, I enjoyed the beautiful starry sky at night and even saw a double rainbow in the morning—absolutely stunning! I bought peaches at a roadside station on my way here. When I asked for a knife, they kindly offered to peel and deliver them to my room—a delightful service! The beautifully arranged peaches were exceptionally delicious. Of course, both breakfast and dinner were thoroughly enjoyable as well. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Conceptual Hotel

It was a Hotel with a strong sense of attention to detail. The surrounding rice fields felt like part of the garden, blending seamlessly. The Room was far from the bath, and I would have appreciated having towels available at the bathing area, so I deducted a few stars. It was very relaxing. Highly recommended.

Surrounded by green rice fields, it was a beautiful season for lotus flowers. While soaking in the open-air bath, we could watch flocks of birds returning to their nests one after another. The meals were well-balanced and absolutely delicious, and we loved the menu selection—completely satisfying. After returning home, I recommended it to everyone I met. Renting bicycles from the Hotel provided just the right distance for cycling. Thank you very much!
