    It is a wonderful Hotel.

I was able to spend a truly relaxing time. The wonderful Room and delicious meals were great, and the staff were very kind. The private sauna was especially amazing! I will definitely visit again.

A Reborn Accommodation You’ll Want to Book for a Multiple Night Stay

We stayed for one night to celebrate an anniversary, and it was a wonderful Accommodation. We had reserved the private sauna by phone, but due to medical restrictions we were unable to use it. Even so, we were very satisfied with our stay. The cuisine was excellent, with great care taken to use ingredients from Kyoto and Shiga. We also thoroughly enjoyed the all-inclusive plan. However, after dinner I spoke to the staff (to take our anniversary cake back to the Room), but they were having a very lively conversation in the back and didn’t notice us for quite some time, which was disappointing. While other guests were eating quietly, it was uncomfortable having to call out “Excuse me” repeatedly toward the back.

    A Villa Surrounded by Greenery

About a 10–15 minute walk from Yase-Hieizanguchi Station, the last stop on the Eizan Railway, you arrive at Moksa, surrounded by greenery. We checked in while looking out at the trees in the garden. Due to construction, the number of guests was limited, and it was just my wife and me at the counter. Our Room was also upgraded for us. Next door is a lounge, so we immediately ordered sparkling wine and enjoyed it while chatting with a female staff member. It was delicious. She spoke with real passion about how wonderful each season is at this Hotel. Even at places called luxury hotels these days, many staff follow a manual. That has its own merits—you can act without worrying too much—so it’s not inconvenient. But in a small Hotel like Moksa, casual conversations with staff create a special sense of comfort.\n\nBecause their sauna is well known, we chose Bishō (the lower-temperature option) from three types available. There were two round tubs: one cold bath and one warm bath. The sauna itself was at a comfortable temperature. We took breaks while enjoying drinks from the refrigerator, then went back into the sauna again. After a little over an hour, we left the sauna and returned to the lounge to enjoy more alcohol.\n\nFor breakfast the next morning (also offered in three styles), my wife had Japanese breakfast and I had their wellness breakfast. Both were delicious and satisfying with just the right portions. Afterward, we had café lattes in the lounge.\n\nThe staff member who assisted us at check-in said that her favorite time is May’s fresh greenery season as new leaves emerge. If our stamina allows, we’d love to return around then.\n\nNote 1: We received an inari sushi set of three for a late-night snack.\nNote 2: Perhaps because we mentioned in advance that it was our golden wedding anniversary, there was a heart shape made from bath towels on our bed in the Room. Thank you very much.

A different world. Full of happiness.

This was my second stay. The moment I stepped through the entrance, it felt like a different world. The meals were delicious, the staff’s hospitality and manners were excellent, and our Room was upgraded—everything was taken care of. I would love to stay again. I’m also looking forward to trying the open-air bath next time. Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience.

A quiet area near Rurikoin, surrounded by mountains.

By chance, we stayed the day before the Gion Festival Yamaboko Junko parade. Although we expected it to be crowded, there were actually fewer guests, and since we visited Rurikoin the next morning, it was very quiet. By chance, dinner also felt like a private booking with only our group. The dishes had a gentle seasoning that brought out the natural flavors of ingredients using Ohara vegetables. It was a wonderful lineup—almost like medicinal cuisine—featuring Omi beef, seasonal pike conger (hamo), Manganji chili peppers, Kamo eggplant, and more. We didn’t use the sauna, but since our Room was riverside, the view from the bathroom was great and very relaxing. The interior was Japanese-modern style, and it was impressive to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on a large-screen TV. Our only complaints were that the hair dryer was too heavy, and that applying makeup was difficult because the vanity mirror had indirect lighting from behind and wasn’t daylight-colored. All of the staff were friendly and approachable. We had a very comfortable stay at this Hotel—one that made us want to return. Thank you very much.

    We will visit again.

I stayed for one night to relax on my own before joining a family trip. I love tea, and being able to enjoy wellness herbal tea was the deciding factor in choosing this place. The stay was so comfortable it felt like a waste to spend it alone, and although I had the Japanese breakfast, I’d love to try the other options as well—so next time I’d like to stay for 2–3 nights. I also ended up having plenty of the wellness herbal tea in the lounge, and even bought some varieties I liked at the shop. I hadn’t made an advance reservation for the sauna due to my schedule, but they kindly informed me about it at check-in. Unfortunately, I couldn’t fit it in this time, but next time I’d like to make an advance reservation and use it.

A stylish Hotel with great taste.

This Hotel impressed us with its refined sense of style wherever we looked inside. Simply being there felt calming, and the trees seen through the windows were beautiful. We truly enjoyed a very comfortable stay. At check-in, we were given inari sushi as a late-night snack. We were touched by this thoughtful gesture. The portion was just right, and it was delicious. Breakfast while looking out at the garden was also wonderful, and we enjoyed a stroll afterward. We even saw fireflies—this Accommodation was excellent in every way, including its surroundings.

    This was my second s...

This was my second stay. The Room was wonderful as always, and I was able to relax deeply. It was my first time using the sauna, and I was very satisfied with both the space and the Facility! Above all, I loved being able to choose from Japanese, Western, or Chinese breakfast; this time again I chose Japanese and enjoyed a truly luxurious morning. Thank you very much. However, I had contacted you in advance to say we were celebrating my partner’s birthday, and I was told the bed would be decorated, but when we checked in and went to the Room it hadn’t been done. I had been looking forward to it as well, so even though it was complimentary, it was disappointing.

Enjoy a forest bath amid fresh spring greenery.

This area is famous for its autumn foliage, but I also love fresh green maple leaves, so I booked a one-night stay here expecting it to be beautiful. The surroundings—along the river and throughout the neighborhood—were lovely, and moksa’s garden was beautiful as well, so I enjoyed a relaxing stroll. While admiring the koi in the pond and losing track of time, my husband suddenly shouted, “There’s a human-faced fish!” When I looked over, there really was a golden koi with what looked like distinctly human-like features—it was hilarious. We couldn’t stop laughing at our “great discovery”! The Room was wonderful too: a spacious living area with two large sofas and a cozy bedroom, both with a calm atmosphere where we could truly unwind. At the restaurant, we were shown to an excellent table by an open window where we could enjoy the beautiful garden, making for a lovely dinner while taking in the view of the Japanese garden at dusk. Dishes scented by wood fire were something we don’t usually have, and everything was delicious. The meat in particular was lean and light yet tender—truly delicious and very satisfying! Breakfast was also great; along with the morning ambiance of the garden, we enjoyed plenty of delicious rice (perhaps cooked in a traditional pot). The Hotel staff were all very pleasant as well, which made our stay comfortable and allowed us to relax both body and mind. Thank you very much!

    A calm and pleasant accommodation.

The staff made a great first impression with their warm welcome at the entrance. The Superior Twin Room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Although the location is a bit inconvenient to access, it makes the Hotel wonderfully quiet with a lovely atmosphere.

    A clean, great-value Accommodation

It was comfortable in a new, clean Room, at around JPY 30,000 per person for one weekday night with dinner and breakfast included. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us during our stay. ●What we liked - Even though we arrived early before check-in, we were allowed to use the parking lot, and they also arranged a taxi for us. - Drinks at the bar next to the front desk and drinks during dinner were free (with limited options), which felt like a great value. The staff even made tea-based cocktails at the bar, and we were told we could take them back to our Room. During dinner as well, they frequently asked if we wanted refills. - The wood-fire course meal was delicious. Sitting at the counter would let you watch the cooking too, so that might have been nice as well. - There were drinks in the in-room refrigerator too, and as an IKYU Diamond member I was happy to receive a half bottle of sparkling wine. - They seem particular about tea, so it was fun having many kinds available; there were also tea bags in the Room. - The Room was new and spotless, with a separate living room and bedroom; it was also nice that there was a TV in both spaces. - There were two sinks, and in our riverside Room the bathroom was bright as well. - We also received inari sushi as a late-night snack. ●What concerned us - The road to the Accommodation is extremely narrow. During seasons when Rurikoin is open to visitors along the way, pedestrians overflow onto the road and driving through becomes very difficult. Since it’s not one-way traffic, passing oncoming cars is truly challenging. - The sauna is private-use only at JPY 12,000–18,000 per session; it didn’t seem like there was a large public bath. - It felt a bit odd that we received the late-night inari sushi at check-in. I wondered whether it’s okay to leave it at room temperature for long periods. We usually receive it after dinner elsewhere, so carrying both our luggage and the box up to our Room was inconvenient. - At check-in you can choose Japanese-style breakfast, Western-style breakfast, or wellness cuisine; however overall portions were quite small and the menu felt simple. In addition, there seemed to be fewer staff in the morning—there wasn’t any greeting upon entering the restaurant—and we had to wait. If staffing is limited (and things aren’t running smoothly), I thought it would help if they gave clearer guidance during dinner such as “This will be your table again tomorrow.” - At checkout there didn’t seem to be anyone handling cash payments for Accommodation Tax; no change had been prepared either, so we had to wait again. In the morning it seemed like only one full-time employee plus perhaps part-time staff were present; there weren’t many smiles and service felt somewhat lacking.

    The Room was relaxin...

The Room was relaxing. I couldn’t use the sauna, so I hope to have the chance next time. I had high expectations for the meals, but I was disappointed for various reasons. There were also several areas where I’d like to see improvements in the service, though my expectations may have been too high. So if there is a next time, I won’t add meals for either dinner or breakfast—there are plenty of satisfying options just a short drive away. If you want to stay in and not go out, having meals here might be a good choice, but… That said, I slept very well, so it’s a Hotel I would like to stay at again.

    Wonderful Accommodation

I had been wanting to stay here for a long time. The Room was very spacious, and the furniture and interior decor were wonderful. The garden is lovely, and the creative cuisine is delicious!

The garden was lovely. The creative cuisine was delicious, and the sauna was thoughtfully arranged. The Room was spacious and clean, and the layout was great, but it felt a bit too minimalist, so I gave it 4 stars. The service was polite, but it felt somewhat mechanical like a Business Hotel; I would have appreciated a warmer, more personal touch from someone like a manager or hostess, so I rated it 4 stars as well. Overall, though, I was very satisfied and would recommend it to friends.

    A bit disappointing.

The Hotel’s atmosphere, staff, and food quality were excellent. However, two pairs of young women dined together at the same counter, and the loud voices and camera sounds were distracting. I wish they had been more considerate of the setting. It took away from the appeal of the live kitchen—though I suppose that’s just the times. Also, regarding my Reservation, it somehow ended up as a one-person Reservation, so I added one more person. It was partly my mistake for not checking carefully, but still disappointing. It felt like I paid a little more than necessary. Since I chose this compact Accommodation to enjoy a luxurious space, it slightly reduced my overall satisfaction.

    Reborn!

I had an incredibly happy time experiencing tea, wood-fired cuisine, the sauna, and the Hotel's recommendations. It was truly a release from the busy year-end and New Year period. I love saunas and often visit them, but this was my first time trying a private sauna, and it was amazing. The cold water bath felt incredibly refreshing. I also enjoyed a leisurely dinner with drinks. I especially loved the Omi beef ichibo wood-fired roast poisson. In the lounge, the staff who offered tea, alcohol, and engaging conversations were wonderful. I hope to visit again during cherry blossom season, fresh greenery season, or autumn foliage to enjoy the garden at leisure.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

Thank you for your kind hospitality during our stay over the busy New Year period, even though we visited with children. We had a wonderful start to the year. I was initially worried about causing any inconvenience as we were traveling with small children, but you provided us with a private dining room, prepared a diaper disposal in the Room, and treated our children kindly, allowing us to enjoy our stay comfortably. The tea offered at the front desk was delicious and truly refreshing. One minor point of concern was that there wasn’t much explanation provided about the meals during their service. Since so much care clearly went into preparing them, it would have been nice to learn more about each dish. Other than that, it was an overall fantastic experience. Thank you very much for everything!

A quiet Hotel with pristine air.

We stayed as a family of five (in 2 Rooms) during the New Year. The Hotel is located beyond Rurikoin Temple, accessible from the cable car station in Yase. Since there are no shops nearby, most of the time is spent within the Hotel. The interior felt like a clean and serene space with fresh air. It was such a lovely Hotel that I would recommend it to friends. The larger Room for three people was a corner Room with a balcony offering views of the garden in two directions. Snow began to fall in the evening, and we enjoyed watching it quietly drift into the garden without any outside noise disturbing us. Unfortunately, we couldn't use the sauna as it was fully booked. The meals were exquisite, featuring creative dishes that skillfully incorporated wood-fired aromas into Japanese-Western fusion cuisine—delicious and unique flavors we had never experienced before. The inclusive drink selection offered various options to enjoy as well. Since it was New Year's, our Room came with special sets including whiskey and sake along with an abundance of sparkling sake and craft beer stocked in the refrigerator. As a family of five, we enjoyed late-night snacks like Inari sushi along with some nibbles provided in our Room while drinking, chatting, and relaxing together—a truly memorable New Year experience. However, one concern was about lighting control in our Room layout: there were separate areas for beds and sofas divided only by latticework partitions. The lighting could only be adjusted uniformly across both areas—meaning if parents wanted to rest on their beds early while adult children continued drinking at the sofa area—the entire space remained brightly lit or completely darkened when dimmed. It would be great if lighting could be controlled separately for each area or if individual floor lamps could be added near sofa sets so those relaxing can enjoy dimmed lights while others have brighter illumination for eating or drinking comfortably in another part of the Room. Thank you very much!

    Relax and unwind.

This is my second stay. It was the autumn foliage season, and unlike last time, it was crowded with people. It was quite challenging to even enter the premises. However, once inside, it felt like a different world—a quiet and relaxing space. The room was the same Superior Twin as last time, spacious and perfect for a leisurely stay. The drink service allowed me to choose tea that suited me perfectly—truly a rejuvenating accommodation.

    A quiet and relaxing accommodation.

Located at the foot of Mount Hiei, this hidden gem offers a tranquil retreat. It would have been even better if there were large public baths such as open-air hot springs. The sauna, which requires an additional fee, is priced a bit too high. If it were just a few thousand yen, I might have used it (though I’m not much of a sauna enthusiast...). For dinner, the chef prepared dishes right in front of us at the counter seats. The chef's skillful techniques showcased true professionalism. However, they seemed to be the type who focused solely on their work without speaking much. A greeting at the beginning and end or more friendly interaction with guests could enhance the experience. In overseas restaurants with counter seating, engaging in conversation with guests is common practice, so this was slightly disappointing... That said, overall service was excellent and I highly recommend this hotel!

    Beyond the Chaos

The autumn foliage season brought many visitors to the Yase area. We traveled by car, but the bridge from the main road to Yase was inaccessible, seemingly managed by staff related to Rurikoin. The path to Moksa was crowded with people, making it quite challenging. However, once we passed Rurikoin, Moksa stood quietly amidst serenity. The reception staff welcomed us warmly and attentively, allowing us a moment of relief. The Room was clean, simple, and very comfortable. Dinner was especially outstanding and absolutely delicious. On our way back, they kindly took photos for us in front of the Hotel. It was truly a pleasant stay—thank you very much!

    There were many disappointments.

    - IKYU mentioned a late-night snack, but we were given inari sushi as a light meal at check-in. - It felt more like a dinner and breakfast package with all-you-can-drink set drinks rather than all-inclusive. - The Room was at a comfortable temperature, but the hallway and elevator were cold. - There were three stink bugs in the Room, and I woke up to the sound of their wings in the morning. - The sauna, despite being a highlight, had excessively high usage fees. - At the restaurant, during an explanation of dishes, "medicinal herbs" was mispronounced as "seiyaku." - We were not informed when our taxi arrangement was successfully made.

    Breakfast Seating

Breakfast Seating Window-side seats with a nice view were all reserved for foreign tourists, and despite being the first to enter, we were guided to an inner seat. This felt like reverse discrimination and left a bad impression. Dinner Service During dinner, there was an explanation of the ingredients and cooking methods, but the staff spoke in a low voice, too quickly, and with poor enunciation. Even though it was in Japanese, it was impossible to understand what they were saying. It felt as though there was no effort to communicate clearly; instead, they seemed to be reciting memorized lines without emotion. Bathroom Amenities Despite staying for one night, only one portion of basic skincare products was provided in the bathroom amenities. Shouldn't two portions be provided for morning and evening use? Overall Impression In general, staff members spoke in low voices and too quickly, making them difficult to understand.
