    Looking forward to it, but...

    A highly sought-after accommodation that is difficult to book. By chance, a cancellation allowed us to stay, and we arrived with great excitement. Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles, and parking was spacious. The atmosphere of the accommodation surrounded by trees felt like stepping back into nostalgic Showa-era Japan. Throughout our stay, the staff's polite service and cheerful smiles stood out. The room was a standard Japanese-Western style without a bathtub—only a shower—which surprised us as it was our first experience of this kind. The main attractions were the famous cave bath and private onsen baths. Meals had no fixed times; we could visit the dining area whenever hungry—a unique system that might be convenient for some. However, regarding taste, it did not suit our preferences at all. Additionally, from appetizers to dessert took two and a half hours—a bit too long for us—and during this time loud voices from an adjacent private room made it unpleasantly noisy. It seems such situations are beyond the ryokan's control; perhaps we were just unlucky. Furthermore, due to the noise outside our room and smoke from the main meat dish’s preparation inside (which caused headaches), dining became uncomfortable overall—though only the new onion soup stood out as delicious. One major concern was how sound carried through this older building; noises from neighboring rooms were quite disruptive. In conclusion, I found this ryokan puzzling compared to others I’ve stayed at before—it didn’t meet my expectations despite its high reputation among other guests’ reviews online. Perhaps what rural visitors like myself seek differs greatly from what others value here. Personally speaking, I would not return again despite being someone who enjoys monthly onsen trips elsewhere regularly—I had high hopes but left feeling disappointed instead due largely in part because expectations weren’t met adequately here given its popularity or exclusivity status otherwise advertised widely beforehand!

    After retirement, I have more time to travel to various places. While there are luxurious accommodations if you spend more, I was truly moved by the hospitality of all the staff during my stay this time and was reminded of its importance. Even after returning home, I often talk about it with my wife. This is only the second accommodation where I’ve given a perfect overall rating of 5 without hesitation. For the finer details, please visit and experience it yourself—I’m sure you’ll understand. I definitely hope to visit again in the future; thank you in advance for your hospitality when that time comes!

    A Special Journey

    There are only 18 rooms, so it seems small, but the property is as large as 10,000 square meters. It's surprising. The number of staff is quite large compared to the number of guests, and the service felt very hospitable. When going to another building, there are stairs, but the use of the sloped land with the flow of the onsen and ponds scattered throughout makes the scenery never boring to look at. In midwinter, there was a lot of snow piled on the branches, but that was actually nice. The rest areas are also well thought out. The four private baths, as well as the baths accessible only to guests of Senzantei, were very good. The meals feature delicious kaiseki cuisine using river fish. Before you know it, it's already the 12 o'clock checkout time. It was truly a relaxing stay.

    I made a Reservation because there was a vacancy on Saturday.

    Famous as a Property where Reservations are hard to secure (perhaps due to a sudden cancellation). Previously, Reservations were only accepted by phone, but a few years ago, it became possible to make Reservations through the IKYU Reservation site, which was a great improvement. I was able to enjoy the cave bath and private baths several times. The private baths were quite crowded, so I couldn't try them all, leaving something to look forward to for the next visit. The cuisine, mainly local ingredients served as kaiseki dishes, was delightful, with private dining rooms and flexible timing arrangements. There was also a wide variety of alcohol, and I ended up drinking too much. The Room at Senzantei was spacious, with excellent furnishings, and the snow that fell overnight created a beautiful snowy garden view in the morning, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would love to visit again in a different season.

    Unchanged Service

    It may have been more than 10 years since I last visited. I felt the luxurious time spent at the Stays after a long time. The attentive and pleasant service remained unchanged. The leisurely meal was another luxurious time. As someone from Nagano Prefecture, I thought the content could have been a little different, and I felt the portion was a bit too much for my age.

    We thoroughly enjoye...

    We thoroughly enjoyed the snowy scenery, Onsen, and meals. From the phone call to the warm welcome in the cold, check-in, dinner, breakfast, and seeing us off, we were delighted by the hospitality of those who took care of us. I thought the level of the many staff members was quite high. Thank you very much.

    A truly exceptional Stays that I don't want to tell anyone about...

    I have stayed at many Stays both domestically and internationally, but there may be no place that surpasses this one... The atmosphere is elegantly Ghibli. The meals are top-notch. You can feel the love for the local area in each dish. The attention to detail in the tableware, furniture, and building construction is remarkable... There is nothing to criticize, only praise.

    Senzantei is high-grade

    I used Senzantei for the first time. I was first impressed by the spaciousness and luxury of the room, as well as the view of the equally spacious garden. The open-air bath exclusive to Senzantei is a modern upgrade of the other three open-air baths, making it the epitome of luxury. This private bath had low competition, allowing us to enjoy it multiple times. Since I had stayed a month ago, I tried the Western course for the first time on the property's recommendation. There was no sashimi or grilled fish, but the exquisite dishes paired perfectly with white wine. It seems that if you convey your meal preferences a few days before your stay, it will be fine, and I felt that I would definitely like to choose Western cuisine from next time. Senzantei is a recommended room where you can get a high level of satisfaction that exceeds the price difference, like a club room in a luxury hotel. However, it rarely becomes available, so you might need some luck to experience it.

    It was a wonderful time.

    I was able to escape from the stress-maxed daily life and spend a relaxing and comfortable time. It was truly a luxurious experience. I was also healed by the attentive service and warm smiles of the staff. There may be other wonderful properties, but for me, this is the best. It has become a property I would like to stay at again if I have the opportunity.

    The stay in the detached room was excellent.

    This is my third time using the service. I found a vacancy in the annex and made a last-minute reservation. Since it's for two people, it doesn't need to be that spacious, and although it's far from the private bath... However, a new private bath for the annex has been established, and it was the best. It was spacious, new, and incredibly lovely. Even if the accommodation cost is high, I want to use the annex again next time. Meal times are also free, so there's no stress. The pleasant response from the staff is also one of the attractions of this property. I will find a vacancy and visit again.

    As rumored,

    The bath was so wonderful that we could hardly stay in the room. (laughs) If you want to fully enjoy it, a multiple night stay is a must. The meals were also very delicious, making it an enjoyable stay. As expected, it's a property that everyone praises, thank you. If possible, I would like to see a response from the guest's perspective. We arrived at 4 o'clock and spent 30 minutes in the welcome lounge. We were informed at 4:30 that "the room is ready." The welcome drink is a nice service, but since the check-in time is 3 o'clock, I wondered if it was just a way to buy time until the room was ready. Furthermore, we had to listen to explanations in the room for over 30 minutes, and we couldn't be released easily. The autumn days are short, and coming from Tokyo takes time and makes us anxious, so I thought it would be perfect if we could be released while the sun was still shining. I don't think our evaluation matters, but I wanted to express it as my impression. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to stay at such a wonderful property. Thank you.

    Truly a wonderful Stays.

    It was truly a wonderful property. A small stream flows through the grounds, and my expectations were already at their peak by the time I was shown to the lobby. I was impressed by the cave bath, the cuisine, and above all, the heartfelt service of the staff. I was able to have a truly wonderful birthday celebration, and I am filled with gratitude. Thank you very much. It is a property that is difficult to get a reservation at, but I would love to visit again.

    This is the best Stays.

    A very satisfying stay. It was my first time visiting in the fall. The leaves hadn't changed color yet, but the crisp morning and evening air was refreshing and delicious. There was a wide variety of sake and wine, allowing us to choose according to the dishes. It was the season for matsutake mushrooms, so we enjoyed matsutake en papillote. The dobin mushi with natural maitake mushrooms had an excellent aroma and taste. The morning smoothie and tofu salad were delicious, and we asked where to buy them on the way back and purchased them. The service and facilities were impeccable. The private bath that was newly built this year was very lovely and located right next to the room, so we used it first. Next time, I would like to enjoy the peak of autumn leaves and snow-viewing sake.

    Impressive Stays

    Welcomed with a smile by the staff and checked in to a lovely garden. The stylish matcha and amazake welcome drinks, the atmosphere of the property, and the furnishings were impressive, but above all, I was moved by the hospitality of the staff. I am especially grateful to the gentleman who attended to us. My daughters mentioned that they felt very relaxed while talking and surprisingly had a good appetite. Thank you very much. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a lovely room with a heartfelt and body-friendly menu, and we enjoyed them very much. We would love to visit again!

    An inn recommended for hot spring enthusiasts

    Good Points - The staff's customer service skills are top-notch. Everyone provided hospitality with wonderful smiles throughout. I felt their delicate care even in casual conversations, allowing me to spend my time peacefully until the very end when they saw me off. - Unlimited access to four types of private baths until 11 a.m. the next day. The private baths, which can be enjoyed as many times as you like without prior reservation if available, are beautifully designed with attention to detail in all four types. Bathing while feeling the great outdoors up close was exceptional. - Flexible meal start times. Both dinner and breakfast can be started at your own timing within the available hours without reservation, allowing me to enjoy the hot springs without being bound by time during my stay. - Scenery reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films. From the garden at the entrance to the interior decor, a wonderful space reminiscent of the world of Ghibli spreads out, allowing me to forget about everyday life during my stay. Points for Future Improvement - Facilities and amenities. The hairdryer provided in the room was old, making it difficult and time-consuming to dry long hair. Also, considering the price range, I thought it would be nice to have individually packaged facial cleansers and lotions, so I look forward to improvements in the future. - Balance of meals. Both dinner and breakfast were vegetable-centered, very delicious, and healthy, but my companion (a man in his 30s) mentioned that he would have liked at least one dish of fatty fish, meat, or fried items like tempura. Since the overall menu was health-focused and easy to digest, I think it would be even better if there were late-night snacks like soba or small rice balls. Although there were points I would like to see improved, it was a wonderful inn that I would definitely like to use again even if they are not addressed. Next time, I will visit with my child after giving birth.

    I had a wonderful time.

    My father had always wanted to visit, and it seems there was a cancellation, so we were able to make a reservation. We had a wonderful time. The cave bath was so enjoyable that I went in several times. The food was not only beautiful in appearance but also delicious. Above all, the customer service is amazing.     As expected.

    The inn is said to be the most difficult to book in Japan. I understood why everyone goes there and why they become repeat visitors after using it for the first time this time. I have been to many hot spring inns before, but there has never been a hot spring inn as flawless as this one. If possible, I would like to stay for consecutive nights...
