An Accommodation You’ll Want to Stay at at Least Once in Your Lifetime
My first trip to Karuizawa with my mother! This Accommodation is famous for being hard to book, and we happened to find an available date, so we made a Reservation right away!! We drove there in a rental car, and from the moment we arrived, the staff’s warm hospitality made us feel truly welcome. Everything about the Accommodation was wonderful. There are four private Onsen baths that don’t require a Reservation, as well as a large public bath and a cave bath. Surrounded by trees, it’s an Accommodation where you can feel time passing quietly. I’ve stayed at many Hotels and Ryokans before, but this was the first time I experienced such outstanding hospitality—including the food!! It’s easy to see why so many guests return again and again!

We had a relaxing stay.
It was a wonderful Accommodation surrounded by greenery. Because we could take our time during meals, we ended up completely full, but it reminded me that this is how dining is meant to be enjoyed. The bath was also incredibly relaxing. The Accommodation itself offers very generous space per guest, creating a true sense of openness, and the beautifully maintained garden trees and the gentle sound of the river were wonderfully soothing. Above all, the staff’s warm, unpretentious hospitality made us want to return in a different season.

Delicious Meals and a Cave-Style Bath
A friend whose recommendations never miss told me this is a place they visit every year, and I finally made it in after being on the cancellation waitlist. With how highly it was recommended, my expectations were sky-high—but it truly delivered! I’m not great with the enclosed feeling of caves, but it kept me wonderfully warm and comfortable. The private open-air bath was spacious, and I could relax while listening to the stream in the mountains—quiet and peaceful even though there’s a road right nearby. They also celebrated my husband’s retirement, which made him absolutely delighted. It will be a cherished memory. The meal was satisfying with none of that “not quite enough” feeling some kaiseki can have; even big eaters like us were completely full. Thank you for the wonderful feast.

I’m glad I came.
It was an incredibly valuable experience. The cave bath was breathtaking! I couldn’t believe a place like this exists, and I felt it’s somewhere everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. Reservations are difficult to secure, but I’d love to be able to gift this experience to my parents as well. All of the private baths were wonderful. I could feel the attention to detail throughout the interior, and it made me think that when so much care is put into a place like this, it naturally enriches people’s hearts. Above all, every staff member’s hospitality was so pleasant, making it a truly comfortable space. I hope I can visit again someday.

It’s easy to see why reservations are hard to secure.
A last-minute cancellation opened up, and I was truly lucky to get a Reservation at this Accommodation—often said to be “the hardest to book in Japan.” I’ve stayed at many Onsen Ryokan across Japan, and I think this one is the best. From the parking lot to the Room, I was surrounded by beautiful greenery the entire way. It was such an atmospheric Ryokan—like stepping into another world. At check-in, enjoying the greenery and the sound of the river while having delicious welcome snacks instantly made me forget the day’s busyness, fatigue, and even the intense summer heat. It felt as if time had stopped, and I became completely calm. The Room was spacious and spotless, and it even had a CD player, so I could truly relax. The indoor bath, their signature cave bath (“Cave Onsen”), and “Musou,” a private Onsen—all of them were outstanding. The food was probably the most delicious meal experience I’ve ever had during any stay. In particular, the salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, brown rice soup, and Shinshu Orein pork shoulder loin were exceptional. After check-out, it was also fun to take a walk along the promenade trail. Thank you to all the staff for your kind hospitality. This is an Accommodation that exceeds expectations—I had a deeply satisfying stay. Now I understand why it’s so hard to get a Reservation. I’d love to come back in another season!

An Exceptional Accommodation
It was an Accommodation that far exceeded our expectations—so wonderful and captivating that it’s hard to do it justice with any words. The moment you enter the grounds from the main road, it feels like another world. From the warm welcome to the gentle flavors and beautifully presented welcome drink in a lounge filled with greenery, everything was exceptional. Greenery everywhere—everywhere you look. The furnishings ranged from dignified pieces with a sense of history to items with a handmade feel, blending Japanese, Western, and Asian styles into a soothing space that never felt overdone. The large public bath, private baths, and cave bath—I can’t count how many times we went in. The cuisine was equally impressive: wholesome mountain-village dishes that were kind to the body, yet beautiful and delicious one after another. The tableware was wonderfully varied too—from substantial earthenware to wooden pieces; even at breakfast, some grilled dishes were served on Royal Copenhagen plates. Above all, the staff were truly outstanding. I’m sure there are manuals in place, but no one relied on them—the warmth of each person made it clear they genuinely love their work and take pride in it. My husband enjoys gardening and ended up asking a young male staff member all sorts of questions about the trees; we’re sorry for taking up so much of his time. From start to finish—including seeing us off until we were completely out of sight—everything felt comfortable and welcoming. It was our first experience leaving us so deeply satisfied both physically and mentally. We completely understand why Reservations are so hard to secure.

A Modern-Day Shangri-La
My husband and I have spent time at many Accommodations whenever we could, and we’ve been healed by each place’s wonderful hospitality, thoughtful cuisine, and Onsen. But our experience at Iwa no Yu was completely different. It felt like something we had never experienced before—yet also like a scene from my childhood at my grandparents’ country home—as if we were inside an endlessly gentle, beautiful, happy dream. There was nothing to worry about, nothing on my mind—like lying down on soft grass with my eyes closed, breathing in the scent of fresh green leaves carried on the wind. It brought back tender memories so distant I can’t even remember when I last felt that way. I also happened to pick up “Momo” by Michael Ende that was placed in the Room, and was grateful for the chance to read it again. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

A welcoming Accommodation where you can truly unwind.
This time, I stayed at this Accommodation, famous as “Japan’s hardest Reservation to get” and for having no website. It’s a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the entrance, but the gate already sets a wonderful mood. Along the way, there are highlights such as a bonfire hut, a gate with an irori hearth, and a bridge over the Senni River—plenty to enjoy before you even arrive. The greenery was beautiful when I visited, and it feels certain that autumn foliage season would be spectacular as well. Inside has a Japanese-Western fusion feel. Seeing the gate with an irori also reminded me of Meigetsuso, which I visited before. More than anything, it feels like the buildings are woven into the trees. Coexisting with nature—trees and seasonal flowers—you can even hear the gentle murmur of the Senni River from your Room. It’s rustic in the best way and deeply relaxing. The baths were flawless. There is an indoor bath as well (with warmer water), but compared to that I preferred the cave bath. The cave bath is pleasantly lukewarm; hearing the sound of natural spring water flowing down echoing inside was soothing, and thanks to the temperature I could soak for a long time. Meals were excellent both dinner and breakfast, featuring mostly local ingredients. The fish was river fish rather than seafood, and meats included venison and horse sashimi—delicious dishes centered on ingredients sourced nearby. You can really sense their commitment to living in harmony with this land, which made dining even more enjoyable. Hospitality was also impeccable. On departure they walked me back to the parking lot while chatting casually; everyone behind-the-scenes greeted me warmly as well, for which I’m truly grateful. I think I understand why it’s so popular now. I’ll be back again.

I was impressed by the powerful cave-style bath, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality. I hope to visit again someday. They also kindly helped with an item I left behind and promptly sent it to me. Thank you very much.

Beloved Ryokan
I stayed for one night to see for myself why the Reviews are so positive. What is it about the retro, cave-style bath that draws people in? For me, a good Ryokan means Onsen, great food, and true relaxation—and this place more than delivers. The staff’s professionalism stands out above all else. Each person gave me the impression of being an owner and hostess in spirit, genuinely committed to making this a wonderful Ryokan. I hope it never changes.

We had a very satisfying day.
Iwa-no-Yu is well known as an Accommodation that’s hard to secure a Reservation, but a cancellation opened up and my schedule was free, so I stayed for the first time. From the entrance, it had a wonderful sense of atmosphere and felt like a truly charming Ryokan. The various private family baths (no Reservation required) were all different and excellent, but my absolute favorite was the cave bath. The water temperature was just right, and even after soaking for a long time I never felt overheated—it was a bath where you can fully enjoy the benefits of the Onsen. It was so relaxing I almost fell asleep, making it perfect for an extended soak. As for amenities, every bath was stocked with face towels and bath towels, along with natural toner and more. Being able to go empty-handed and bathe right away is a convenience you don’t often find at other Onsen Accommodations. The next morning brought an unexpected cold snap and light snowfall, and the lightly snow-dusted views around the Ryokan—and from the baths—were beautifully atmospheric. I felt lucky to see it. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Local dishes such as carp and river fish had no unpleasant odor at all and were genuinely excellent; the char rice served with the meal was so good that I asked for seconds. The price per night certainly isn’t cheap for an Onsen stay, but I definitely want to return soon. One note: perhaps because I soaked for so long in such comfort, I seem to have become mildly dehydrated without realizing it—I woke up twice during the night extremely thirsty to drink water, and on the drive home I kept drinking tea nonstop. Please be mindful of this.

Reviews are not necessary.
It was a wonderful Accommodation from check-in to check-out. We were amazed by the cave-style bath and relaxed in the private bath, enjoying a great time. This is an Accommodation where you can stay just as you are, with space and time to truly unwind. The meals may be a matter of personal taste, but we recommend trying them as served on the menu at first. If we visit again, we might consider making special requests.

A Birthday Gift for My Mother
A few years ago, my parents saw this place on TV and said they wanted to visit someday. I had been keeping an eye on it ever since, but never saw any availability. Then, by chance during my mother’s birthday month, I found an open room and immediately made a Reservation. It was forecast to snow from the day of our visit, so we were disappointed that we might not be able to enjoy the garden, but they were delighted that the snow-covered scenery had its own charm. Despite being a long-established property, the building is quite spacious, with several baths—so many that they couldn’t visit them all. The furniture and decor are neatly arranged throughout, and they loved every corner and took lots of photos. The meals were all wholesome and just right even for my father, who doesn’t eat much. They now say they’d like to save up themselves and come again around the season of fresh greenery. Thank you very much.

An Accommodation nestled in nature with a nostalgic scent that makes you want to stay forever
We visited Senjin Onsen Iwa-no-Yu, often said to be the hardest Onsen in Japan to secure a Reservation for—highly recommended by the owner couple of Shirakabaso, where we stayed in Sugadaira. Tucked away along a river deep in the mountains, it is wrapped in a quietness that feels untouched by human development. The cuisine, carefully showcasing river fish and local ingredients, is understated yet so accomplished it could easily merit two Michelin stars. The cave bath carved into rock and the open-air bath blending into the forest are both wonderful, but what stayed with me most was the very “atmosphere” shaped by the founder’s philosophy. Surrounded by thousands of books, I realized I had slipped back into my elementary school self who used to spend days at the library. I even surprised myself by not wanting to leave that stillness behind. Rather than a luxury Ryokan, it felt like being allowed to stay within nature itself—an Accommodation that makes you want to return.

The ultimate Ryokan
I heard about this place from a friend and tried to make a Reservation, but it was fully booked. After waiting on the cancellation list for several days, I finally managed to visit in early November! In one word: amazing... The view from the Room, the food, and the Onsen were all perfect! The garden was beautifully colored with orange and red autumn leaves, and there was a newly built bonfire area where we could warm up while enjoying the scenery on chilly nights. The staff were incredibly attentive, which deeply moved both my mother and daughter. We made a Reservation for next year before leaving!

Thank you for staying with us again.
Over the past two years, traveling has become a hobby after retirement. Starting with budget-friendly accommodations, our standards have gradually risen as we experienced renowned and luxurious accommodations. Among all the places we've stayed, there is one accommodation we revisited twice, another three times, and only this "Iwa no Yu" four times—once in each season: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The convenience of its location from our home and the flexibility in our schedules to book whenever there's availability certainly played a role. However, above all else, it perfectly matches our preferences. Every time we arrive at the parking lot here, we feel excited and are never disappointed. While the amenities are not particularly luxurious and there are quite a few stairs within the facility that might be challenging for some guests to navigate comfortably, these minor drawbacks are far outweighed by its many positive aspects. By checkout time during every visit here, we're already looking forward to coming back again—and I believe we're not alone in feeling this way. We sincerely hope that this wonderful accommodation continues to thrive with its unchanging hospitality and respectful atmosphere among guests who appreciate it just as much as we do!

An accommodation you'd want to bring your loved ones to.
Everything was exceptional, exceeding expectations. You can truly feel the effort and hospitality spirit of the accommodation. Usually, you might encounter at least one staff member with a neutral expression or a mechanical attitude, but this time there was no such person. The high level of professionalism among the staff was evident. It’s impossible to find another accommodation with meals, baths, and an environment like this. I already want to return again. I believe it’s all thanks to the outstanding approach of this accommodation. I hope it continues to exist forever.

A space where you do nothing, just surrounded by tranquility and healing.
I heard from a friend about this accommodation that's hard to book, searched for it, and found out there's no official website—reservations are only available on IKYU.com. It seems like everyone books their next reservation, and even the one after that, just like at a popular beauty salon these days. Reservations are fully booked up to a year in advance. I managed to grab a spot from a canceled reservation on IKYU.com by chance. Although the date I went was on a workday for me, I felt I had to book it because who knows when I'd get another chance! Even though it was quite rushed, everything about this place was absolutely amazing. The cave bath, private baths, meals, excellent staff members—the sense of taste in every single item placed there—and the attention to detail throughout the building were all exceptional. They made full use of abundant nature and water while paying meticulous attention even to small details; little vases with flowers were placed here and there elegantly along with potted plants subtly arranged everywhere. Maintaining such cleanliness must require tremendous daily effort! With such short time between check-in and check-out hours, I kept wondering when they manage all this? It’s clear that everyone takes pride in their work and values what they do deeply. I would love to visit again!

An Experience Beyond Expectations
The cave bath and private baths were truly impressive, offering a unique and extraordinary experience. Additionally, the staff provided exceptionally polite and pleasant service, making meal times enjoyable. The interior design was tasteful, the entire facility was clean and comfortable, allowing for a relaxing stay throughout. It was so comfortable that I ended up making my next reservation at checkout. This was the first time I’ve ever done such a thing at an accommodation, making it a truly special favorite place of mine.

The Ideal Onsen
After being on the waiting list, I was finally able to visit. At check-in, I relaxed with a cold drink and traditional Japanese sweets in a lovely lounge. The room's refrigerator was stocked with persimmon leaf tea and sweet corn, while the post-onsen relaxation area offered chilled drinks with fruit, along with cold cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. Beautifully arranged flowers adorned various spots throughout the accommodation, complemented by thoughtfully placed chairs and hammocks—all of which were delightful. The private open-air baths each had unique charm; some featured jacuzzis, while the cave bath had water flowing powerfully—one night simply wasn’t enough to enjoy everything. Dinner was served in a private room where we savored healthy dishes at a leisurely pace. Everything was so delicious that we finished every bite and felt full yet surprisingly light by morning. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the river was equally wonderful. Both meals were beautifully presented with exquisite tableware. The staff greeted us warmly with genuine smiles, making our stay truly rejuvenating. Next time, I hope to visit during another season for a two-night stay!

An accommodation worth visiting just for that.
Step into a different world. This is a place where you can relax, and it feels as though time slows down. From young staff to seasoned professionals, everyone provided warm hospitality, allowing us to unwind completely. Meals were served in small portions featuring seasonal delicacies, paced perfectly for us to enjoy without feeling overwhelmed—a thoughtful touch for my spouse and me. The private bath experience was seamless; although many staff members kindly asked if we had to wait, we were fortunate enough to enter without any delay. The atmosphere is exceptional; however, there are quite a few steps and stairs throughout the property. We hope to visit again while we're still active and steady on our feet!

A perfect accommodation for ultimate relaxation.
This accommodation, which we visited for the first time as a family of three, provided us with a wonderful time filled with tranquility and warmth. The staff's hospitality was very natural, not overbearing, and their heartfelt service gave us a sense of comfort. The sound of the river flowing right next to the accommodation was always soothing, making us feel enveloped in a relaxing atmosphere throughout our stay. The private baths each had their own unique charm and were slightly lukewarm, allowing us to enjoy luxurious moments of long soaks together as a family in complete privacy. This special experience left a lasting impression on us. This trip was planned to celebrate my wife's birthday, and upon informing the staff beforehand, we were pleasantly surprised by their thoughtful gesture during dinner. My wife was delighted by this unexpected surprise, creating an unforgettable moment for our family. We are also grateful for the flexible and warm consideration shown towards our son who needed to work remotely during our stay; they provided him with a quiet workspace environment. Dinner featured dishes made with plenty of local ingredients; every dish was carefully prepared and full of heartwarming flavors that left us completely satisfied. As we departed, even small gestures like cleaning our car windows added to the thoughtful care we experienced from start to finish during this memorable stay. Thinking about how different seasons might bring new charms makes us eager to visit this accommodation again in another season!

Relax and unwind.
A revisit. The interior is tastefully designed, offering a space to experience an extraordinary atmosphere, and the quiet environment of this standalone accommodation is truly relaxing. As with the previous visit, there are many group guests, making the public facilities lively. However, I was able to enjoy a peaceful and leisurely time in the room. The private baths are often occupied and not always available when desired, but the mixed-gender cave bath compensates for any inconvenience. Above all, the staff members are kind and provide pleasant service that makes you want to return again and again.

The best time to start is now.
I had an urgent matter in Nagoya, so I decided to take the opportunity to relax at an Onsen in Nagano and made a reservation the day before my stay. It was a trip with my mother, and she was very happy, but as she's in her 60s, going up and down stairs seemed a bit challenging for her. The staff and room attendants were always smiling, which made our stay very pleasant. We were assigned a wonderful room attendant—thank you so much! This accommodation allows you to enjoy the beauty of all four seasons, so I’d love to visit again in autumn or winter. When I do, I hope we can have the same room attendant again. Without any prior information about this accommodation, we stayed here this time and later heard from the staff that it’s quite difficult to secure a reservation—what luck! The large public bath was almost like having it all to ourselves no matter when we went. Although rain was forecasted during our stay, we were blessed with good weather instead. The price felt very reasonable! I’ll definitely visit again someday!

We stayed as a group of three friends. The accommodation blends harmoniously with the lush greenery. The stylishly arranged decor corners make you want to enjoy a relaxing multiple night stay. Delicious cuisine and the warm hospitality of the staff brought smiles to our faces. Everything was absolutely satisfying.

Second Stay
Having had a wonderful experience during the winter, I revisited during the fresh green season. Changes from last time: - Stayed at Senzantei instead of Senjutei this time. The private bath exclusive to Senzantei and the Senzantei area were both very satisfying. However, considering the accommodation cost, I felt that offering free drinks beyond just persimmon leaf tea—such as complimentary bottled water or free items in the refrigerator—would enhance satisfaction. Although there was a coffee maker exclusively for Senzantei guests, using tap water for it felt odd, so I didn’t use it. If that’s not feasible, perhaps providing a free drink voucher at the café exclusively for Senzantei guests could elevate their experience. - During my winter stay, most guests seemed to be couples, making it incredibly quiet and allowing me to fully enjoy an extraordinary escape in nature. This time, however, there were more groups of 4–5 people (as I heard from staff that this tends to happen in better seasons), which made things feel busier and less serene compared to winter’s tranquility and sense of escape—a bit disappointing. While group trips are undoubtedly enjoyable for many people, I hope consideration is given to those who wish to indulge in peaceful luxury as well. That said, since this is more about guest behavior than something under your control as an accommodation provider, it did not affect my overall rating. During my winter visit, meal service timing was excellent with pleasant casual conversations with staff members attending us; however this time—with many group guests—it seemed harder for staff to keep up with service demands. Meal timing was off on several occasions; rice and miso soup especially took quite some time to arrive during meals which slightly dampened the dining experience. For these reasons regarding service quality on this occasion specifically—I rated 4 stars. Overall though—it remains one of my favorite accommodations! If possible—I’d love another stay during autumn!

Recommended by a friend from Niigata. Welcomed warmly at the entrance upon arrival by car. Passing through the gate, a clear stream flows with a pleasant breeze. A relaxing time surrounded by negative ions. The staff's smiles, kind words, and hospitality were heartwarming. Enjoyed the bath three times during my stay. The meal was a mountain village-style kaiseki; I wonder if they can adjust for those who aren't fond of vegetables or river fish? That was my lack of information beforehand. I believe this is a top-class accommodation and would love to visit again!

A charming standalone accommodation surrounded by nature
Recently discovered accommodation, and it’s been a while since I found such a great place. A lovely accommodation surrounded by nature, with the famous cave bath offering an excellent atmosphere and quality of spring water. The staff provided kind and attentive service, and the facility was well-equipped, creating a very pleasant space. The meals were not ordinary but a delightful fusion of Japanese and Western cuisine that never got boring—absolutely delicious. I just returned but already feel like going back soon; it’s an addictive accommodation in the best way possible. It’s easy to see why there are so many repeat guests.

Looking forward to it, but...
A highly sought-after accommodation that is difficult to book. By chance, a cancellation allowed us to stay, and we arrived with great excitement. Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles, and parking was spacious. The atmosphere of the accommodation surrounded by trees felt like stepping back into nostalgic Showa-era Japan. Throughout our stay, the staff's polite service and cheerful smiles stood out. The room was a standard Japanese-Western style without a bathtub—only a shower—which surprised us as it was our first experience of this kind. The main attractions were the famous cave bath and private onsen baths. Meals had no fixed times; we could visit the dining area whenever hungry—a unique system that might be convenient for some. However, regarding taste, it did not suit our preferences at all. Additionally, from appetizers to dessert took two and a half hours—a bit too long for us—and during this time loud voices from an adjacent private room made it unpleasantly noisy. It seems such situations are beyond the ryokan's control; perhaps we were just unlucky. Furthermore, due to the noise outside our room and smoke from the main meat dish’s preparation inside (which caused headaches), dining became uncomfortable overall—though only the new onion soup stood out as delicious. One major concern was how sound carried through this older building; noises from neighboring rooms were quite disruptive. In conclusion, I found this ryokan puzzling compared to others I’ve stayed at before—it didn’t meet my expectations despite its high reputation among other guests’ reviews online. Perhaps what rural visitors like myself seek differs greatly from what others value here. Personally speaking, I would not return again despite being someone who enjoys monthly onsen trips elsewhere regularly—I had high hopes but left feeling disappointed instead due largely in part because expectations weren’t met adequately here given its popularity or exclusivity status otherwise advertised widely beforehand!
