The pool requires a Reservation, which can be stressful.
My child was really looking forward to the pool, but it required reservations and we couldn’t get in at the time we wanted at all, which was very stressful. Poolside seats with parasols also became paid seating. The breakfast buffet has changed from before and is now mainly Japanese-style, which was a welcome change for those who like Japanese food.

Unfortunately, it was a disappointing stay.
I’ve stayed at this Hotel nearly 10 times as a favorite, but this time I was upset from check-in due to an issue with the Hotel credit. After that, I wasn’t informed that a connecting Room couldn’t be arranged, so I assumed it was connecting; when I entered the Room, it was a standard Room, and I was shocked to learn it ultimately wasn’t available. After that, there weren’t enough pajamas or toothbrushes, the morning newspaper didn’t arrive, and the pool became reservation-only so we couldn’t get in at the time we wanted. Poolside seating also became paid. I knew children under 4 are not allowed in the pool, but we were even refused entry near the pool area. Overall, unpleasant issues kept happening throughout this stay, leaving a bad aftertaste.

The bathroom was disappointing. The floor was soaking wet, which made it inconvenient to use. It would be easier to bathe if there were a partition in the bath area. I didn’t feel like using it more than once. Having an Onsen in the Room felt pointless. Very disappointing.

We had a wonderful time as a family.
ROKU Kyoto was one of the Hotels I had always wanted to stay at. I found a day when it was nearly half price in a sale and booked it on impulse. Although it was a short one-night stay, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had at any Hotel in Japan. My 7-year-old loved the pool and enjoyed it two days in a row. When I looked at the Reviews on Google Maps, I was surprised to see so many negative ones, but I felt that the experience depends on how crowded it is. The day we stayed seemed quiet, so check-in went smoothly, and there were few people at breakfast, allowing us to relax. (Breakfast was delicious and made me so happy... I definitely want to visit again.)

It was great.
I thought it was a good Hotel overall, and I was finally able to visit as I had hoped. While it is a good Hotel, there were delays in various situations—perhaps due to staffing shortages—which made me feel that this is just the reality these days. Since it was during the Obon holiday period, there were many families with children. At dinner, although it’s understandable, the long wait times seemed to lead to some children becoming upset and crying for quite a while, so it didn’t feel very relaxing, which was disappointing. The staff were doing their best, but they seemed short-handed and it looked challenging for them. The dinner itself was good. For breakfast, I felt that for a Hotel of this class, there could be a bit more effort.

A Quiet Yet Dynamic, Unforgettable Summer 2026
The expansive Roku in Takagamine, Kitayama, Kyoto is wonderfully quiet. In the summer of 2026, we decided to stay for three nights with my son’s family. My granddaughter loves the pool. What I was curious about was dinner. Since this spring, the chef and menu have changed. We left it to the chef, and truly enjoyed the rich flavors that come from thickness and texture—scallops, duck, sirloin, striped jack, pork confit, and more. The Kyoto vegetable sides were simple yet bold. We ordered signature cocktails. I chose “La Vie en Rose” just by its name—wondering what it would be like—and it surprised me in the best way. The other three of us each picked different ones as well, and we had a great time enjoying their vibrant colors and flavors. It will probably become one of our most unforgettable dinner memories of 2026. In the thermal pool, my grandchild happened to make a friend, and their dads joined in too—playing along like turtles giving rides to two kids with lots of enthusiasm. As for me, I exercised with backstroke while looking up at the sky and did some water walking. By the way, did you know that from the bath in your Room you can enjoy both the TV and views of Takagamine’s trees at the same time? The TV in the photo was showing a Major League Baseball game.

As always, everything was very good, but I felt a little uneasy about the service.
This was my third stay, and as always I had an amazing time. One thing I noticed this time was that, aside from the check-in staff (who were excellent), there seemed to be some gaps in training or perhaps a staffing shortage after the Obon holidays, as there were several communication mistakes. We were guided to the wrong poolside seats for our Poolside Villa (and guests in the neighboring Poolside Villa were also shown to the wrong pool chairs), towels in the pool area took a very long time to be cleared away, and room service was delivered only for another staff member to come and try to clear it away 30 seconds later (we definitely hadn’t finished!). I love this Accommodation, so I hope these points can be improved. I’m looking forward to my next stay.

The Room, pool, and ...
The Room, pool, and other on-site Facilities were excellent, and we were able to spend a truly relaxing time. The dinner course was also very delicious. One request concerns breakfast seating. We arrived right after opening, and although there were plenty of empty seats, we were shown to a table directly behind a family with small children, so the noise was distracting. If it had been full, that would have been understandable; however, when it is mostly empty, I believe there should be consideration such as seating guests accordingly or allowing them to choose their own seats. That said, overall it was a very satisfying stay. We would love to visit again if we have the opportunity.

The meal service was disappointing.
I had high expectations for the Hotel’s atmosphere and service, so it was disappointing that dinner took quite a long time to be served. There were long gaps between courses, and we spent a lot of time waiting, which made the meal feel more stressful than relaxing. The food itself wasn’t bad, so I think the stay would have been much more satisfying if the service timing had been smoother. I hope this will be improved in the future.

It felt truly luxurious!
Pros: - Hotel staff always greeted me when we passed each other, which felt wonderful. Everyone was kind, including the restaurant team. - Towels and water were available throughout the property (thermal pool, fitness area, etc.), which really felt like a luxury Hotel. - Being able to request amenities via the TV was convenient. The person who delivered them also made a great impression. - I ordered the IKYU perk cocktail “Hanamonogatari” (non-alcoholic), and it was unbelievably delicious. Cons: - Check-in was at 3:00 PM and I arrived right on time, but I waited quite a while before being shown to my Room—about 45 minutes in the tea house. There was also an unclear credit card check (the guest next to me wasn’t asked). Since I had prepaid, I wasn’t sure why it was necessary or what it was for. - The bathroom in my Room was still slightly wet (under the rain shower). I didn’t mention it since it would get wet again anyway, but more sensitive guests might care. Notes: Overall, operations are calm and unhurried. If you get impatient with waiting, you may find it frustrating. I wouldn’t recommend staying here on a tight schedule. It’s best for guests who want to relax and enjoy a resort-like stay at their own pace.

The view was very beautiful.
I first visited for lunch and loved it, so I decided to stay. The Room has large windows, and the view from the Room was beautiful. Dinner was delicious, and the breakfast buffet had a great variety—fun and tasty. I’d like to come back for lunch again in autumn.

The Room, meals, and service were all excellent.
We stayed for one night on a family trip during summer vacation. The fact that our child could play in the pool was a deciding factor. The Room was spacious and clean. The amenities were well stocked, and it was great that we could order anything missing via the TV. The pool was also large and pleasantly warm. My mother also had an esthetic treatment, and she said it was so good that she fell asleep halfway through and barely remembers it at all. We exchanged emails in advance about our child’s meal for dinner, and it turned out even more delicious than we expected—making for a wonderful family dinner. All of the staff were very kind to our child as well, and after joining the behind-the-scenes tour, our child happily told us all about it. They were also considerate about our checkout time, so we had a lovely holiday. It’s not easy for everyone’s schedules to line up, but we would love to stay again. We were saying that the garden must be beautiful in autumn too.

I’d love to stay here again.
Thank you for taking care of us every year. Each time we visit, we’re reminded how wonderful ROKU is, and we leave already wanting to come back. The staff are always courteous and calm, which makes us feel at ease. We also enjoy dinner every time; the seasonal menu is delicious and something we look forward to. This time in particular, the melon parfait was outstanding. There is just one thing that always leaves us a little disappointed. I don’t mean to act like a regular, but when checking in or being shown to our Room, we are often treated as if it were our first stay. If our stay history could be shared among the staff so that you could welcome us accordingly, it would make us feel even better. I’m not trying to compare with other places, but because this is a Hotel we truly love and where we are always treated well, it can feel a bit lonely at times.

Another world
The staff were very courteous. With the mountains as a backdrop, the beautiful reflecting pool Facility was truly picture-perfect. From the guest room, I found myself gazing absentmindedly as time passed, enjoying a sense of being somewhere unlike anywhere else. The in-room bath was also large and luxurious. Dinner was a full-course meal and it was outstanding. There was a generous portion of meat as well—I ended up completely full. Breakfast wasn’t flashy, but it was calm and satisfying, with no issues at all. I couldn’t help but buy a plush toy of the little bird mascot named Roku-chan. My elderly mother who traveled with me was also deeply impressed and said she would like to come again. As it is somewhat pricey, there were various types of guests, but the staff were excellent.

At check-in, two parties were seated next to us and our conversation could be clearly overheard. We would have liked you to provide a RESORT MAP and the Shozan Resort brochure (the on-site guide map has print that is too small). We appreciated the taxi ticket to the Imperial Hotel, but when we returned to your Hotel, there was no one at the entrance, and four staff members at the front desk were chatting. Please improve your greeting/arrival support (e.g., with better monitoring/coverage). At the pool, we would also like chilled water with an insulated cover. At The Bar, we would have liked an explanation of the complimentary signature cocktail at the beginning. At checkout, I asked for a copy of the receipt but did not receive one. Also, the Room coffee cups and tea set were difficult to use; getting into the bathtub required stepping over a high edge and was difficult, so I would have liked a chair as well. The facilities are good overall, which makes these issues disappointing. A cart shuttle service within the resort would make stays more convenient. We charged our meal at Loulan to our Room—has it been properly posted?

My wife and I took a trip to Kyoto. The staff at both the front desk and the restaurant were very kind and helpful. The Room was clean, and the view of greenery from the window was soothing. The thermal pool is 1.2 m deep and spacious and comfortable, but we were slightly concerned about being seen from the adjacent rooms. The restaurant deserves full marks for both food and service. Warm, gentle flavors with satisfying portions—excellent.

A Relaxing Getaway in Rakuhoku
ROKU KYOTO is a beautiful Japanese-modern property set in a truly one-of-a-kind environment, making it the perfect place for a staycation. Although it rained during our visit, the water feature seemed to come alive and was impressive in its own way. While food is not served like in a club lounge, the Facility is excellent, with comfortable spaces to relax outside of your private room as well. I would love to visit again in another season.

Not worth the price.
The Room is small and feels cramped, and the phone does not connect. The restaurant is casual, and breakfast takes a long time to be served—overall, it feels like a budget Hotel. Shower water leaks into the Room, which is unacceptable. I never want to stay here again. It is not worth the price at all.

Staff Service
We stayed here last year and had a great experience, so we chose this Accommodation again this year, but this time it was very disappointing. Throughout our stay, there were many issues due to poor coordination among staff and unclear explanations from staff, which made us feel uncomfortable and resulted in a disappointing stay.

Not worth the price.
The room was small and the furnishings were not luxurious. The breakfast area was crowded and we had to wait, so it felt like staying at a budget Hotel.

Spring in Roku
It was a little early for cherry blossoms, but we were welcomed by fully blooming sakura in the tea room. Staying at Roku also gives you free entry to the Japanese garden at Shozan Resort, where we enjoyed cherry blossoms, cornelian cherry, and a pine bonsai said to be 200 years old. We even had the chance to try a brushstroke with a bamboo pen—an unexpected taste of spring. Half the joy of coming to Roku is dinner: the French cuisine. The amuse-bouches were even more delightful than before, and this time I especially enjoyed the venison. We spent time as usual in the outdoor thermal pool and at morning yoga, and on our third morning we saw dramatic arrangements of mitsumata flowers before saying goodbye for now.

Japanese is not spoken.
The Hotel building (its exterior and the view from the Room) feels special and out of the ordinary, and it is stylish and wonderful. We had both dinner and breakfast at the in-house restaurant TENJIN, where the service was excellent, the dishes were creative, and everything was delicious. However, I was very disappointed with the front desk service. The Asian male staff member who handled my check-in—his nationality did not matter to me at all—could not communicate in Japanese at a functional level. He seemed to have memorized what was written in a manual, but even that was sometimes hard to understand due to unclear pronunciation. When I asked questions about what I didn’t understand, he could not comprehend them. If he had called over someone who speaks Japanese or gone to confirm details at that point, I could have accepted it—but for some reason he just sat there confidently with a smile. No matter how many times I repeated my questions, he only replied “Yes” with a pleasant smile. These were not yes/no questions, yet “Yes” was his only response. At check-in—the moment when explanations and Q&A are most important—I don’t think it is appropriate to put someone with this level of Japanese in front of guests. I understand that because there are many international tourists, multilingual staff are necessary. However, in a Hotel located in Japan, having staff assist Japanese guests despite being unable to communicate in Japanese is clearly inappropriate. Especially at this price range and class of Hotel, I did not expect this kind of service and was shocked. The TV in the guest Room also defaulted to English; even after switching it to Japanese, it reverted back to English every time I pressed the Home button, which was inconvenient. I can read and speak English, but since I am in Japan, I would like an environment where guests can stay comfortably in Japanese.

A Cozy Hotel
Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and exceptional hospitality, we had a very comfortable stay last time, so I brought my daughters with me this time. We received warm service and thoughtful, flexible care. When returning to Kyoto with my daughters, we usually stay at a different Hotel each time, but for the first time they said they would like to come back again. The Onsen thermal pool, delicious meals, the calm pace of time, and the wonderful staff all made our stay truly special.

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Stay at Again
The property was very clean, and the staff were courteous, making our stay comfortable. The in-Room Onsen was wonderful, but we were slightly concerned that the shower booth is located between the two sinks without a partition, which made it easy for the wash area to get wet. The meals were stylish and delicious, and with a heated pool and sauna as well, we enjoyed ourselves so much we didn’t have enough time. Room service was also well stocked, and overall it was a highly satisfying stay.

A Quiet Luxury Hotel
This stay will be one year after I made the Reservation on IKYU.com in February 2025. I have stayed at many Hotels in Kyoto, but this was my first time using a Hotel in the Rakuhoku area. Kyoto is often lively with inbound visitors, but ROKU KYOTO is far from Kyoto Station—about a 30-minute taxi ride into the mountains—so there were fewer people and it was wonderfully quiet. After arriving, I checked in on the lobby floor (not at a reception desk) while enjoying welcome tea. A bell staff member escorted me to my Room. The Room I booked was a Premium King Room on the 4th floor. As Hilton’s top-tier luxury Hotel until Waldorf opened, both the facilities and the staff’s hospitality were excellent, and I had a very comfortable stay. For breakfast, it was complimentary as a Hilton Gold Elite benefit. It is basically a buffet, but the main dish and hot drinks are made to order, with everything else served buffet-style. The selection isn’t large, but everything was delicious. You can also place orders such as in-room dining from the TV monitor. Since most requests can be made through the monitor, it’s convenient to adjust timings in advance—such as clearing dishes after meals or scheduling Room cleaning—especially if you plan to go sightseeing. Kinkaku-ji and the gardens at Shozan Resort are nearby, so sightseeing is possible. However, due to the location, there are no taxis waiting on the Hotel grounds. I recommend arranging a taxi in advance for your departure. During this stay, I was especially grateful to the female Food & Beverage Supervisor who assisted me with in-room dining. My travel plans for the rest of this year are already set, but I would definitely like to stay again next year in a different season.

The buffet selection is limited, which is disappointing.
This is my fifth stay. I remember the welcome drink used to come with snacks, but now it's just tea, which feels a bit disappointing. The breakfast buffet still has significantly fewer options compared to hotels of the same level, which is unfortunate. I requested a connecting room, but the view was blocked by pine trees, which was disappointing. Other than that, I am always satisfied with my stay. Especially the pool—it’s fantastic!

Enjoyed a peaceful December.
In December, we started visiting Roku to enjoy the Christmas decorations, festive dishes and desserts, and the year-end atmosphere. My husband loves it too, especially for its tranquility. Personally, I enjoy floating in the thermal pool while gazing at the vast sky. The yoga activities are also a blessing, and I look forward to meeting the instructor. The view from our Room this time featured bare trees stretching out before us—a wintery scene with beautifully shaped branches.

It was a bit disappointing.
This was my second stay. I was almost satisfied with my previous visit, so I came back with high expectations. The atmosphere and food at the Hotel were as good as before, but I was slightly dissatisfied with the service of the restaurant staff. The explanations about the dishes were unclear; while their effort was evident, I felt that clearer explanations would be more appropriate for a Hotel setting. In particular, the explanation of the dessert seemed careless and left me completely confused. It was very disappointing. Additionally, during breakfast, I ordered congee that turned out to be lukewarm, which surprised me a bit... Since this had been one of my favorite Hotels, it was truly disappointing.
