    An Extraordinary Escape

    I discovered this Hotel on YouTube and had always wanted to visit someday, and my wish finally came true—I was able to stay here. From the moment I stepped inside, the quiet atmosphere felt like entering another world, and thanks to the attentive service from every staff member, I was able to enjoy a truly extraordinary experience. I thought I had prepared by watching videos beforehand, but in a good way it exceeded my expectations. The meals were impressive enough to be called moving, and even if you stay mainly for the dining experience, you will be more than satisfied. Dinner was French cuisine with Japanese (Kyoto) touches, so even those who love Japanese food will be highly satisfied. The staff’s service and clear explanations of each dish made for enjoyable conversation—and I ended up drinking a bit too much (laugh). Breakfast can be chosen as either Japanese or Western style, so I realized it’s impossible to fully appreciate everything about this Hotel in just one night; I’ll work hard so I can come back again. Lastly, while I would like to give five stars across the board, the bath is not an Onsen so I’m giving it three stars; however, the bathtub is spacious and bath additives are provided, so you can still relieve your travel fatigue—please rest assured.

    Kyoto’s finest hospitality.

    It was a wonderful stay! Although I knew it was part of the Banyan Group, I visited without really understanding what level of Hotel brand it was, and I was immediately blown away by: - Complimentary Shuttle Service hire car from Kyoto Station - A hidden-gem-like entrance that opens into a lobby with an expansive view - A relaxed check-in while looking out over the courtyard - Welcome drinks of matcha and traditional Japanese sweets - Polite, pleasant service from the staff And then on top of that: - Unique and sophisticated in-room interior design - A stunning view of Nijo Castle - Complimentary minibar included as an IKYU member benefit - A scented sachet (I kept wondering where the lovely fragrance was coming from!) - Turndown service while we were out It was one exceptional touch after another, and it truly made me feel glad I chose this Hotel. In particular, a young female staff member at the front desk always addressed me by name, which gave me that special comfort you only get at a small luxury property. Even after returning home, I’ve been bragging about it to my family and friends. If I have the chance again, I would absolutely love to stay here. Thank you very much.

    Recommended Hotel for Your Stay in Kyoto

    I chose “Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto by Banyan Tree” as my Accommodation when visiting the Gion Matsuri (Saki Matsuri). I live in Nishinomiya, so it’s close enough for a day trip, but since it was the Gion Festival, I decided to stay overnight. After considering several options, I finally chose Garrya, which I’d been curious about for some time. I checked in in the evening, and as soon as I passed through the entrance and reached the lobby, I was breathless at the beautiful green garden framed by the large windows. I was even more moved by how the trees were reflected on the large stone table—it felt almost like being in an art museum. The calm atmosphere instantly eased my fatigue, and I truly felt glad I had chosen this place. My Room was on the third floor—Room 305 (Nijo Castle View Twin). The reflection of greenery even appeared above the window, creating an unexpectedly spacious feel that really impressed me. The use of stone flooring also gave it a wonderfully solid, luxurious presence. The raised area featured black tatami mats—something we Japanese guests especially appreciate. From the furniture and cushions to the bedding, every detail felt carefully considered, and I was completely satisfied. For breakfast, I chose their “Wellbeing” concept option—it was genuinely delicious and deeply impressive. The staff were flawless as well. Although it may seem like a high-end property at first glance, there were many younger staff members too, and their warm hospitality made me want to chat with them naturally. You’re sure to have a wonderful stay here.

    The hospitality was excellent. However, it was disappointing that the food was not very good. I only had breakfast (Japanese-style), so I cannot comment on dinner, but there were not many side dishes. If the meals are improved, this is one of the Hotels I would definitely like to visit again.

    It was even nicer than I expected.

    It was a wonderful stay in a very quiet Room. The bathroom was spacious with a comfortable washing area, separate from the toilet, so I could truly relax. The staff were also exceptionally pleasant. We had both dinner and breakfast, and both were delicious, so we were completely satisfied with our stay. It is a lovely, lovely, lovely Hotel. It felt like the whole team was working together to make the Hotel even better. These days many Hotels have cut back on amenities, but here the slippers, toothbrushes, combs, as well as coffee, tea, and herbal tea were all excellent. I really loved it. I’m grateful to have had the chance to stay here. Thank you very much.

    I’d love to stay here again.

    We had a very satisfying stay. The garden visible from the front desk and the calm overall interior made it easy to relax. The red accents in the Room were also surprisingly soothing, and my husband especially enjoyed the meals, particularly dinner. It was my birthday, and they celebrated with thoughtful touches in our Room and during our meal. Even when a small issue came up, the response was excellent—almost more than we deserved. Every staff member at both the front desk and the restaurant was wonderfully attentive, and we would definitely like to stay again.

    This Hotel offers exceptional hospitality.

    I stayed here for the first time to celebrate my mother’s birthday. I love small luxury hotels and have stayed at several in Kyoto, but the service at Hotel The Gate Nijo Castle was the best. Every staff member was extremely pleasant, and no matter who assisted us, they provided very attentive service. We arrived earlier than check-in time and planned to leave our luggage only, but our Room was ready, so they kindly let us check in right away. It was a cold day with bad weather and my mother was tired, so this really helped. The meal at the on-site restaurant Shinzo was also excellent. Everything from the dishes to dessert was truly delicious. We also ordered a birthday cake for dinner; it looked gorgeous and made my mother very happy. Breakfast was fun as well because each of us could choose our preferred items from the menu. I would definitely like to stay again.

    Perfect for family trips.

    We stayed here on a family trip. We chose this Hotel because it had highly rated Reviews. As expected, the service was very hospitable. We only had breakfast, but it was delicious. We didn’t have dinner at the restaurant this time, but next time we would definitely like to dine at Shinzo. It was a very comfortable Hotel. Thank you to all the staff.

    This was my second stay. This time, I didn’t go anywhere and was able to relax and refresh with a leisurely Hotel stay. Thank you very much! I heard the chef at Manzo has changed, but once again we enjoyed truly delicious cuisine. The beautifully plated dishes made me feel so happy, and the style of finishing them right in front of us was exciting as well. Also, the various ingredient combinations are delicious in a pleasantly surprising way—they always amaze me. The desserts were wonderful too and naturally brought a smile to my face. I couldn’t stop grinning. I also enjoyed the food pairings with Chinese tea and with sake. Of course, breakfast was delicious as well. Thank you for accommodating ingredients I’m not fond of. The hospitality from all the staff was very comfortable, making this a Hotel I want to visit again. On our way home, my daughter and I were already discussing when we should come back for our next lunch or stay. We also enjoyed the takeout baked sweets at home. I’d love to see more varieties! I’m looking forward to it.

    We had a wonderful wedding anniversary.

    Our stay and dinner last year were wonderful, so we chose this Hotel again for our wedding anniversary this year as well. We were welcomed at the driveway with lovely smiles, and once inside the Hotel, Sommelier H also came to greet us, which made us very happy. Although we were a little past peak season, the remaining autumn leaves and the carpet of fallen leaves still looked beautiful from the lobby. Everyone at the front desk was courteous throughout, and even at that point I felt, “I’m glad we came back.” Because the Room is so comfortable here, I like to buy sweets from a shop recommended by the front desk and relax while looking out at Nijo Castle and Kitayama beyond it. At dinner, not only was the food excellent but the service was outstanding as well. I have hearing loss in my right ear, and perhaps they noticed from a brief gesture of me turning my better ear; before I could say anything, they smoothly moved behind me to speak. I was truly impressed. It showed they carefully observe guests while speaking and respond flexibly without being bound by routine—this didn’t feel like mere coincidence. The dishes also had different touches from last year, and everything was delicious. The “Hakoniwa” course especially suited my taste this time with its focus on seafood. We were told that the chrysanthemum greens sauce represented Nijo Castle’s pond; when we visited Nijo Castle the next day, my wife and I had fun joking about it—“Oh, that must be where the chrysanthemum greens sauce is… so maybe around here is where the kelp-cured sea bream would be?” It’s hard to choose favorites among any of them, but this time my wife was most impressed by the soup, while for me it was the Omi duck. And then there was a surprise dessert—wonderful in flavor and presentation alike—and above all we were deeply touched by such thoughtful hospitality. Choosing wine (which we don’t know much about) was also great fun; thanks to your recommendations I ended up quite tipsy, and my only regret is that I went back to our Room without seeing what Sommelier H had planned to show us (laugh). If it wouldn’t be a bother, please let us see it next time. That night after returning home, my wife happily said, “That was so much fun—I want to go again!” For someone like me who chooses where to stay just to hear those words afterward, that is truly top marks. We will definitely return when we have another opportunity. Thank you very much for everything.

    I stayed during the autumn foliage season. What stood out the most throughout my stay was the warm hospitality of the staff. It wasn’t just formal service; they kindly greeted me even when I returned from outings, and their thoughtful attention made my entire stay incredibly comfortable. The dinner featured creative and memorable dishes, with each plate offering surprises and delight. The meat was exceptionally tender, and my elderly parents who accompanied me were pleased, saying it was "high-quality meat that didn’t feel heavy on the stomach." It was a meal that could satisfy guests of all ages. The room had a calm atmosphere and was very comfortable to spend time in. The view from the window was beautiful, providing soothing daytime scenery. This was my first experience staying at a Banyan Tree hotel, but I was captivated by its comfort and would love to stay again. If I were to mention one minor point, securing parking space proved slightly challenging. However, upon arrival, I could temporarily park at the hotel entrance until a space became available later in the evening. The staff handled this situation with great care, so it caused no inconvenience at all. While it’s not an accommodation within an easy price range for me personally, it still left such a lasting impression that I naturally want to visit again.     The Diamond Member benefits were excellent, providing a special and memorable stay. While the chauffeur service was only available from the station, which felt slightly inconvenient, the ride itself was very comfortable. The room offers a view of Nijo Castle, though primarily of its walls. The guest room is somewhat compact with a stylish red and black design that might feel less relaxing for some guests. Due to the location, some car noise can be heard, which may bother those seeking complete silence. The hospitality of the staff was exceptional—always warm and attentive throughout our stay. When we mentioned it was our wedding anniversary trip, they prepared a heartfelt gesture that made us very happy. For dinner, despite some reviews mentioning "strong flavors," we found it well-balanced and delicious overall. However, given the hot season during our visit, slightly more saltiness might have been preferable in certain dishes. The only disappointment was with dessert—the strong aroma of cilantro overpowered other flavors—but everything else exceeded expectations. We appreciated being able to choose pillows and enjoyed the well-stocked drinks and snacks in the room. Overall, it was an elegant stay filled with high-quality hospitality!

    A Hotel That Makes Nijo Castle Feel Even More Wonderful

    A hidden gem of a Hotel nestled in a residential area, where passing through the lattice door and walking along the bamboo-lined path leads to a grand automatic door. Upon entering, you are greeted by a stunning garden view through large windows. The garden reflects on the lobby tables, creating an enchanting scene. Authentic tea ceremony utensils adorn the walls, enhancing the serene atmosphere as we enjoyed welcome tea and sweets. The Room's interior features modern touches with red accents perfectly balanced with black stone flooring, offering a comfortable stay. The bathtub was spacious and relaxing. I was delighted to find my favorite coffee machine in the Room, making it even more enjoyable. From our Room's window, we had a close-up view of Nijo Castle and could easily take an early morning stroll before it got crowded. Breakfast focused on well-being was delightful; especially notable were three types of smoothies that were exceptionally delicious. With fewer guest rooms available, there were no waits or crowds at the elevator. The Hotel staff provided attentive and courteous service throughout our stay. This quiet and sophisticated Hotel offers excellent dining options in an elegant atmosphere—definitely somewhere I would love to visit again!

    This was my third stay, and it was as comfortable as ever. Thank you very much. During breakfast, the staff kindly suggested moving to a seat with a better view when it became available, and although I chose tea, they also offered coffee. These small gestures are rare but truly show their excellent hospitality skills, which impressed me greatly. The meals were delicious; however, comparing them to other places I've tried during my travels, I would rate them a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to staying again!

    A hidden gem with beautiful design, offering heartfelt and warm hospitality.

    From the moment of making the reservation, I received a heartfelt email regarding the accommodation. As I was staying with my elderly mother, they kindly measured and informed me about the bed height when I inquired. They also arranged for a sedan-type taxi for our return and accommodated our early arrival before check-in time with great care. I enjoyed both dinner and breakfast, which were delicious. However, the lighting in the dinner restaurant felt very dim to us, possibly designed for international guests. It was unfortunate that we couldn't fully appreciate the beautifully presented dishes due to this. The service staff were excellent.

    Wonderful Hotel

    I stayed for one night and two days. From check-in to check-out, I had a very comfortable and pleasant time. I stayed in a room with a view of Nijo Castle, and it was incredibly soothing to see the beautiful castle surrounded by lush greenery through the panoramic windows. The room had a coffee machine and tea bags from my favorite brand, which made me happy. The refrigerator was also stocked with various beverages (available for an additional charge). The room itself was modern, stylish, predominantly red-themed, and impeccably clean. The meals for breakfast and dinner were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Most notably, the hotel staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Their thoughtful attention to detail truly made my stay special, for which I am deeply grateful. I would love to stay here again in the future. Thank you so much!

    It was great.

    I stayed for one night on January 25, 2025, with two meals included, at half price. The meals, Room, and amenities were excellent. The front desk staff were all kind and professional women in a clean environment. Dinner was served in a dimly lit area; while I understand it was for ambiance, I would have preferred slightly brighter lighting. Next time during the half-price period, I’d like to stay in either the Bamboo Forest Room or the Well-being Room. It’s close to Nijo Castle, and I enjoyed taking two walks there. The drinks provided in the Room were also delicious. Thank you very much!

    I stayed at the accommodation last month as well, and once again, I truly appreciate your hospitality. Although the weather was unfortunate and I couldn't use the balcony much, the garden was very beautiful. The room was thoroughly cleaned, allowing me to spend my time comfortably. The staff were always welcoming with smiles, making my stay very pleasant. Breakfast had just the right portions and featured ingredients that were health-conscious and enjoyable. I would love to stay here again if I have another opportunity.

    I stayed for one night in a room with a Nijo Castle view. The room was modern, featuring a red and black theme, with full glass windows on the Nijo Castle side, offering an open and spacious feel. Although I had some trouble with the Nespresso machine and had to request a replacement, the staff's response was exceptionally polite and made me feel almost apologetic for asking. It was slightly disappointing that milk was provided in powdered form rather than portioned liquid. The amenities were lovely, especially the wooden brush instead of plastic. For breakfast, I could choose between Japanese cuisine or a well-being option. I went with the recommended Japanese meal, which used carefully selected ingredients and tasted excellent. Next time, I would like to try staying under the well-being plan to experience different rooms and amenities.
