Thoughtful hospitality.
After my wife used the hot spring, she panicked because she thought she had left her makeup pouch behind. During dinner, we asked SH, the dining hall staff member in charge, and they kindly provided a mask for her. Fortunately, when we returned to our Room, the makeup pouch was sitting in the corner of the sink (it seems she had taken it out of her bag and set it down as soon as we arrived, then forgot). Everything worked out in the end. Thank you very much to SH, who also assists at the front desk and even gave us their business card.

This was the best Accommodation I have ever stayed at. Before dinner, I was able to relax in the lounge and enjoy my favorite drinks, stylish snacks, and a leisurely time. After dinner, after using the large public bath, I went back to the lounge again and was able to spend a wonderful time. Thank you very much. I will visit again next year.

The comfort here is exceptional.
This was my first return in about four years. I made a Reservation based only on my good memories from last time, and it was just as wonderful again. The staff were friendly and attentive, and their hospitality left me very satisfied. My favorite part was the lounge—there were various alcoholic drinks and snacks, plus juice, sweets, and coffee, and I found myself stopping by for a bite or sip every time I passed. For dinner we had teppanyaki; the Kobe beef course is on the smaller side in portion, but it’s all about quality over quantity—the flavors were outstanding. That said, I felt the garlic rice could be included as standard. It was so delicious that everyone should try it, and it really showcased the chef’s skill. I visit Hakone not so much for sightseeing but as a personal treat to relax, and this place was perfect for that kind of stay.

Just one thing...
We made another Reservation so we could relax in the Onsen with my daughter’s family as two families. The Room, meals, Onsen, service—everything was extremely satisfying. Thank you very much. The only disappointing point was the in-house slippers. They were too large and a bit worn out. The footwear for my 7-year-old grandchild was not child-sized either (though they seemed to like it), and their toes were sticking out of the front while wearing them. All of the staff provided attentive service down to the smallest details with warm smiles, making this a trip we will remember fondly. Thank you sincerely.

Warm hospitality and attentive service
The attentive hospitality was exceptional, and I was thoroughly satisfied with my stay from start to finish. What especially stood out were the two guest-only lounges—one by the front desk and another in the main lounge area. Each had its own distinct atmosphere, and I was able to relax and enjoy a refined, unhurried time in a truly luxurious setting. Sipping free-flow drinks and enjoying small sweets while taking in Hakone’s nature was simply the best. For dinner, I dined at the main restaurant “Mutsuki,” where every dish was delicate, beautifully presented, and a delight for both the eyes and palate. I also opted for the sake pairing this time, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The selections perfectly enhanced the umami and flavors of each course, bringing new discoveries and excitement with every sip. The harmony between the food and sake was outstanding, making it a truly indulgent dinner experience. The staff’s warm hospitality and attentive service were equally wonderful. This is an Accommodation where you can fully enjoy an extraordinary sense of luxury—I would love to return again in a different season.

The Best Accommodation
The hospitality was outstanding from the moment we entered the lobby. In the lounge, there were snacks and drinks such as tea, coffee, and black tea; the iced tea in particular was delicious. The Room was fairly compact, but the open-air bath was great. You can also enjoy alcohol and light snacks in the lounge before and after meals. There was a wide variety of sweets, and I ended up feeling very full. The open-air bath in the Room is wonderful, but I highly recommend trying the spacious public bath as well—it’s excellent. We chose teppanyaki for dinner, but it felt a bit lacking in portion size. Breakfast was also slightly disappointing, but because the location, Onsen, and all of the staff were fantastic, I’m giving it 5 stars.

In-room Onsen
This was my first stay at Gora Karaku. During the autumn foliage season, I think you can enjoy an amazing view from the open-air bath in your Room. The lounge at Izusan Karaku feels more upscale. The Onsen in the Room feels like Hakone, and the lounge feels like Atami. That’s how I felt.

Breakfast is…
This was my second stay. I had a very good impression last time, so I had high expectations. The lounge had improved a lot, but the seat at breakfast was right by the entrance—almost like sitting in the aisle— which was uncomfortable. Is it decided by the Room category? Other than that, I was very satisfied, so it was very disappointing.

Top-Class Japanese Cuisine in Hakone
This was our second stay, and once again we were not disappointed by the quality of the ingredients and preparation of the Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately, there were only three towel sets provided in the bathroom, which was inconvenient when two people used it both at night and during the day.

This is my third stay. It’s a Hotel I want to stay at again and again. Ideally, I’d love to visit every season. I look forward to staying with you again soon.

It was very relaxing.
It was incredibly relaxing—the birdsong from the surrounding forest and the incense were wonderful. I was satisfied with everything about the Room amenities. I usually wake up in the middle of the night, but the mattress felt similar to my bed at home and was extremely comfortable. The lounge was also pleasant, with a great selection of items.\nI’d love to stay again with my daughters and friends. I’d also like to visit your affiliated property in Atami. Thank you very much.

I stayed here for my girlfriend’s birthday.
We stayed here for my girlfriend’s anniversary trip. Before our stay, I consulted with the staff several times about arranging a cake and a bouquet. Everything was prepared exactly as discussed, and the surprise on the day was a great success. She was truly happy, and it became a special, unforgettable stay for me as well. The room was spotless throughout, and we were able to relax in complete comfort. The private hinoki bath in particular had a wonderful atmosphere and was impeccably clean, making it feel like a truly luxurious experience. The drink service in the lounge and around the Accommodation was also excellent, so we enjoyed our stay without any inconvenience. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, but what impressed us most was the outstanding hospitality from all the staff. Their explanations of each dish and attentive care were thoughtful, allowing us to enjoy every meal comfortably from start to finish. I’m genuinely glad we chose this Accommodation for such an important occasion. When we visit Hakone again, we would love to stay here again.

The Pleasure of Staying In
Typhoon No. 6 hit us right in the middle of our two-night, three-day stay! It poured all day like someone had tipped over a bucket, so we stayed in the hotel the entire day. We hadn’t planned to go out anyway, so it wasn’t a problem at all. We enjoyed an indulgent day with an ideal Japanese-style breakfast, then a relaxing rotation of the large public bath, sauna, cold plunge bath, and outdoor air bathing—plus complimentary alcohol in the lounge. In the evening, we finished things off with a luxurious Japanese dinner paired with sake, and ended the day with a soak in our in-Room bath. Sorry, God!

A Refined Space
Paying 200,000 yen per night for two people, I feel we had an experience worthy of the price. The food left the strongest impression—teppanyaki dinner, as well as hors d’oeuvres and sweets in the lounge—everything was high quality and beautifully presented. We used the large public bath at night and in the morning, and both times it felt private; it was quiet and wonderful, though I noticed a slight odor around the door leading to the open-air bath. There was a tour group staying, so the lounge was a bit lively at night, and at breakfast we couldn’t get our preferred time because priority seemed to be given to the group, which was disappointing. If possible, I would prefer that large groups not be accepted. I also felt that the Room washbasin area wasn’t very spacious, and there weren’t enough spare bath towels.

Excellent service
From check-in to check-out, the service was exceptional. Welcome sweets All-you-can-eat desserts at Awai Dinner Breakfast The hospitality in every aspect was completely satisfying. I want to visit again. Next time, I’d like to spend a lot more. It was a Ryokan that made me feel that way.

I chose the teppanya...
I chose the teppanyaki Plan, and it was the same price as the Japanese meal. The bath and lounge were very comfortable, but dinner completely changed my impression—I only regret it. What? Only steak? The meat was high quality and tasty, but I was just confused. I’d be fine with less meat—please include some seafood, anything. After paying this much, is this really the meal? I can’t help but feel disappointed. If I only wanted steak, I would go to a restaurant for that. At a Ryokan, isn’t it normal to want to try a variety of dishes? When I checked the website later, it said it was a “short course,” but that wasn’t clear on IKYU. If I had known that, I wouldn’t have chosen it. At the very least, I wish there had been a note or warning.

Despite some system changes, your comfortable stay remains unchanged.
Upon arrival, the staff greeted us courteously at the drop-off area and even took our luggage by cart to our Room—service that felt just as consistent as before. Check-in had changed from being seated in the lobby to standing at the reception desk, but it was handled efficiently without any crowding, so there were no issues. While being seated for check-in with welcome drinks and sweets does feel relaxing—and is arguably standard at luxury Ryokan these days—I personally didn’t mind enjoying self-serve drinks in the newly set-up lounge. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the bottled cold tea prepared there was. As I wrote in a previous review, the Room was spotless and well maintained. The amenities and equipment were all in good order, and the view stretching out to the distant ocean was outstanding. The open-air bath enjoyed while taking in that scenery was wonderfully soothing and made for a truly luxurious experience. For dinner we chose Japanese cuisine, and overall it felt carefully crafted throughout. The main grilled dish followed a prix-fixe style with two courses—fish and meat—and there was also enough clay-pot rice to get seconds, leaving us completely full. The meat dish on the first night was a bit firmer than expected for wagyu and lacked some richness, which was slightly disappointing; however, the meat dish on the second night was excellent (for a Multiple Night Stay, they will adjust the menu). As for service, during our visit some new staff members were undergoing training. The trainer seemed very busy balancing instruction with guest service, yet their attentive and perfectly measured hospitality was impressive and made us feel very comfortable. The staff during meals were also easy to talk to and approachable. What surprised me most this time was how many inbound guests there were (mostly from Europe and North America). It felt like 80%—no, 90%—were international visitors; we hardly passed any Japanese guests at all. The weak yen is truly something else, but it genuinely felt like being abroad (Hakone itself is full of overseas visitors). Sometimes inbound tourism is associated with noisy behavior in lounges or actions that disregard Japanese culture or customs, but we encountered none of that during our stay—everyone we met was calm and respectful. We have stayed at Karaku before several times, and once again this visit was comfortable and wonderful. I would definitely like to return again—including Atami as well.

It was wonderful, but…
Overtourism and the increase in international visitors were within expectations. However, regardless of nationality, the noise and behavior that strayed from Japanese manners made it hard for me, as a Japanese guest, to relax and left me feeling mentally drained. Also, since we had a privilege that allowed check-in (C.I.) one hour earlier than usual, we arrived at 2:30 p.m., but the front desk was moderately crowded with foreign guests. For some reason, we were kept waiting until later. When someone finally came to assist us, it was a woman wearing what looked like a gray Islamic-style uniform. This is not discrimination—I was simply surprised. I never expected to see that kind of attire at the reception desk of a Hotel in Hakone! It felt like Japan and yet not Japan at all, and it spoiled what should have been great Facilities and service. I’m sorry to say this, but I visit Hakone often to relax both physically and mentally; honestly, I would prefer not to use this Hotel again in the future.

Thank you for a wonderful experience.
I have only stayed at a few luxury hotels, but the views, the Facility, the staff, and the food—everything was wonderful. Thank you very much. P.S. Even though it was a special memory for me, almost none of my past Hotel stay history was saved. IKYU, that’s disappointing...

That’s unfortunate...
After a very satisfying stay at Karaku Atami at the end of last year, we chose Karaku Hakone again without hesitation. Perhaps it was due to the season, but since Hakone was more expensive, we had high expectations; unfortunately, it honestly fell short. The Room, the in-room open-air bath, and the open-air bath in the large public bath all felt far superior at Karaku Atami. The Hotel layout also seemed very complicated—perhaps due to the terrain—and getting around inside the Hotel was quite difficult. As it coincided with my birthday, I was looking forward to dinner at Tokuju for their grill. It was tasty, but it felt like a standard teppanyaki without any particular standout features. The Room amenities also did not include toothpaste, so we had to ask for it before going to bed. The staff’s hospitality was excellent and truly worthy of a top-class Hotel.

The meals were delicious. However, I felt the staff’s attentiveness was lacking. After arrival, no one helped carry our luggage to the Room, so I had to carry a heavy backpack myself. I have stayed at many Onsen Accommodations, but this was the first time this happened. The explanations about in-room amenities and Facilities were also insufficient, and it was tiring to have to confirm things and ask questions myself. I understand they may expect guests to read the manual they provide, but that feels unreasonable when you arrive exhausted after a long trip. The limousine bus stop at Odawara Station was also hard to find.

4th KARAKU
This was our fourth stay at Karaku. We stayed over the year-end holidays last time (our third visit), but the service felt different from our first and second stays, and we were disappointed in many ways, so we hesitated about returning. However, on the morning of departure during our last stay, a staff member told us they would review the issues and make improvements, and invited us to come again—so after a short span of three months, we decided to stay for the fourth time. First, we were relieved to see that the front desk service had improved. Also, the lounge we always look forward to was the best it has ever been. The Onsen (Gora Onsen) was excellent. It is a bit hot, but we truly enjoyed it. The amenities also moisturized our sensitive, easily dried skin, so we felt comfortable even after bathing and ended up going in multiple times. However, this time there may have been an issue with the air conditioning in our Room. Even with the setting at 30°C on rapid mode, it did not warm up; it felt below 20°C and was cold—something that had never happened before—so we contacted the front desk. A maintenance staff member came to check it but insisted only that “it isn’t broken,” and that was all. A service staff member kindly suggested moving us to a neighboring Room. They warmed that Room for about an hour as well, but it was similarly cold, so in the end we did not move and stayed where we were. We warmed ourselves by using the bath again in our Room’s bathroom, received blankets, and went to sleep. At present, it seems there are no fan heaters available for loan. People do feel heat and cold differently to some extent; however, if guests are actually feeling cold, I think having something as simple as fan-heater loans would be helpful. This is not about an inexpensive Room—we are referring specifically to a Karaku Room. We would appreciate your consideration. If not for this air-conditioning issue in our Room’s Facility equipment , compared with last time we truly felt things had improved significantly overall. Hospitality is built on human relationships and is not something easily solved with money alone; yet it seemed you addressed that within a short period of time. On the other hand infrastructure/Facility improvements can be handled through repair or replacement—and if something is lacking you can add more—so I am writing this Review hoping things will be improved by our next stay.

A Quiet and Comfortable Accommodation
I was looking for an Onsen Accommodation where I could relax with my 90-year-old mother, and we chose Karaku. Although there seemed to be many international guests, the property still maintained a peaceful atmosphere, and we were able to spend a very comfortable time. At night, we rested in the large public bath, and at dawn we relaxed our bodies in the open-air bath on the balcony. The amenities were excellent, so I purchased some on our way home. The snacks, teas, and drinks provided in the Room were all outstanding. I wanted to buy them as well, but they were not available for purchase, which was disappointing. I felt that this careful attention to detail was reflected throughout everything. I would definitely like to recommend it to my friends. Finally, thank you very much for the Shuttle Service from Odawara Station to the Accommodation. I am posting photos of dinner with pairing and breakfast. Rather than saying more here—please come and experience it for yourself.

Come back in a different season…
The staff at Atami Korakuso kindly helped with shuttle bus arrangements and other support, and this was my first time staying for a Multiple Night Stay in Atami and Gora. Since it was February and the leaves had fallen, the scenery felt a bit sparse, so I’d like to see it again when there is fresh greenery and the mountains are lush. There were many items on the lounge menu, but I would have liked drinks stocked in the Room refrigerator. When returning from the lounge terrace, there was no explanation that you need to hold up your Room key, and because it was dark at night it was hard to understand; I couldn’t open the door and had trouble. Also, moving between the two buildings was a bit confusing. I feel the price is high, but my favorite part by far was the private bath. It felt calmer than the large public bath, and I would like to use it again.

It was great after all.
Because our previous stay at Atami’s Karaku was so wonderful, we visited Hakone this time. It may sound like a comparison, but the free drinks and snacks were better in Atami. The coffee wasn’t very good. I was also surprised by how many international guests there were, but everyone spent their time quietly. Both the Facility and the service were flawless.

This Accommodation exceeded our expectations!
We had wanted to visit for a long time, so we chose it to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The Room, bath, and meals were all wonderful, but above all, the staff’s warm and courteous service was outstanding, and we had a truly comfortable stay. This is the first Accommodation I’ve ever stayed at with absolutely nothing to complain about. My husband and I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

Excellent service and meals make for a highly satisfying stay, though the Facility could be improved.
[Overall Impression] The staff were exceptionally attentive, and both the dinner and the baths were excellent, so overall this was a very satisfying Hotel. That said, for a Hotel in this class, there were a few disappointing points regarding the Facility and certain details. [What I Liked] - The staff service was outstanding. At the teppanyaki dinner, thanks to the chef’s thoughtful attention, I had a delicious and enjoyable time. - This time I stayed on the 1st floor of the East Wing. Although it is on the 1st floor, because of the elevation the view is not bad. The Onsen was also excellent, with a good layout that flows smoothly from the open-air bath to the shower booths and washbasins. - The lounge offered a wide variety of drinks, and the snacks were tasty as well. However, if you are imagining lounges at places like Marriott, there are no meal-style offerings. [Points of Concern / Areas for Improvement] - The Wi-Fi was very weak everywhere—whether in my Room, in the lounge, or in restaurants—and essentially unusable. This was surprising for a Hotel in this class. - The washbasin area has a single sink and limited space; it feels about right for a 44 m² Room. - At breakfast, sunlight was glaring; I would have appreciated some advance adjustments such as setting blinds appropriately. Also, when replacing table paper placemats, crumbs scattered around—this lack of consideration stood out. - I was told to park in an area that is slightly far away and across a road; with curves nearby it felt somewhat unsafe.

I was able to relax and unwind.
We stayed here for a family birthday. Both the Room and the lounge were comfortable and relaxing. The large public bath had a wonderful view from the open-air bath, making it very pleasant. The Room’s open-air bath could also be screened with a curtain for privacy, which was great. The meal at “Muttsuki” was delicious and generous in portion size. They took a commemorative photo at the end, which became a wonderful family memory. Thank you to all the staff.

This has become my regular Accommodation.
Every time I arrive, I feel like I’m “back home,” and it makes me excited for the start of a trip I’ve been looking forward to. During my stay, I used the lounge and the Onsen many times. Thanks to the staff’s attentive care, I was able to spend my time comfortably. Reuniting with the dinner staff and the lounge staff also made for great conversation, and it’s one of the reasons I choose Gora Karaku. With so much to enjoy—the lounge, Onsen, meals, spa treatments—I never have enough time, and someday I’d like to stay for two nights. One request: in the Karaku Room, a sofa would be more relaxing than chairs. I’m planning to visit Atami next time. Thank you in advance.
