Healing in a Castle Town
A calm Accommodation renovated from a traditional old house The young staff provided attentive, dedicated hospitality There’s still room for improvement going forward It may be unavoidable in an old house, but If you’re sensitive to dust on window frames or in corners, it may be a concern They also put great effort into the meals.

Iyo Ozu Fireworks Festival
On August 3, the annual Iyo-Ozu Hijikawa Fireworks Festival is held, so I made a Reservation for a Room with a close-up view of Ozu Castle. In the early evening, we finished dinner at the Hotel’s French restaurant “Le Un,” then returned to our cool, air-conditioned Room and waited excitedly for the fireworks to begin, sipping wine while admiring the illuminated Ozu Castle. Ozu is known as “Little Kyoto,” and in summer the basin heat and humidity linger even at night. But because of this terrain, the sound of the fireworks echoes off the surrounding mountains into a tremendous roar—more powerful than any fireworks I’ve ever experienced. This time I discovered a new style of Hotel created by renovating historic traditional houses scattered throughout Ozu, making it a truly meaningful summer trip.

Highly satisfying even for Japanese guests.
The concept is that a traditional machiya townhouse has been turned into a Hotel, but the bathroom and toilet areas in particular feature a solid, modern, stylish interior—almost like a luxury Hotel. At the same time, the Room type we stayed in had a two-story layout, giving us that special “getaway” feeling similar to renting an entire machiya in Kyoto. For dinner, we enjoyed an authentic Japanese-style French course while looking out at Ozu Castle beautifully illuminated from the restaurant building, and we were very satisfied. The prices for additional drinks were also quite reasonable. Convenience may vary depending on which building your Room is in, but the complimentary free-flow service for guests near the front desk building was also well equipped, with an impressive variety of alcoholic beverages. Of course, there is also mandarin orange juice. When we mentioned that we needed to leave early due to our travel schedule the next day, they kindly accommodated us by moving breakfast up by 30 minutes earlier than the original start time—an excellent example of their attentive hospitality. As noted by the Hotel’s own guidance, because this is a renovation that preserves as much of the original old machiya structure as possible, it isn’t perfectly sealed. Occasionally insects may get inside and be found on the walls of your Room, so it may not be suitable for those who dislike bugs or are particularly sensitive. (Insect spray is provided just in case, and it wasn’t enough to bother us.) Ozu’s castle town—surrounded by beautiful rivers—is just the right size to explore on foot, with a good number of sightseeing spots as well as cafés and restaurants scattered around. If you’re traveling around Matsuyama and nearby areas, staying here for one night would make for an excellent experience. Any concern that this might be just another superficial place aimed at foreign tourists proved completely unfounded—it’s a Hotel that Japanese guests can truly enjoy as well.

A Historic Accommodation
We enjoyed an extraordinary stay while exploring Ozu’s historic streetscape and staying in a renovated traditional Japanese house Accommodation.

Wonderful castle view
I loved the concept of making the most of historic elements and the town as it is today. Every service and amenity was well prepared, and I was very satisfied. Above all, it was amazing to be able to see the castle so close from my Room. Recently, many lounges serve espresso-style coffee from high-pressure machines, but in an unmanned lounge they can break down or get crowded—so how about switching to drip coffee packs? The coffee would taste better that way too.

Wonderful Accommodation
This renovated traditional Japanese house was a wonderful Accommodation—spotlessly clean, spacious, and full of charm. The hinoki bath was also very relaxing, and we were able to unwind.

Warm and welcoming hospitality.
I had some business in Yawatahama City and stayed overnight in Ozu City on my way back. I decided to stay after watching “Tabi Salad.” (This was my second time staying with NIPPONIA, following my visit to Iga.) All of the staff were full of hospitality and handled multiple roles. Dinner while looking out at the illuminated Ozu Castle was wonderful—made with local ingredients, with a great atmosphere and excellent flavors. The simmered dish served at breakfast had a slightly sweet broth, just to my liking. The ganmodoki from Nakagawa Tofu Shop and the lightly grilled jako-ten were also delicious. I would love to stay again if I have the chance.

Exquisite French Cuisine in a Wonderful Setting
The luxurious French cuisine at the foot of Iyo Ozu Castle was outstanding in both presentation and taste. The Hotel was very relaxing, and the Room and bed were spacious and comfortable. Since the bath and toilet were in the same Room, I had a companion who took long baths, so I was a bit inconvenienced because I didn’t know how to use the front desk restroom. Still, I would like to look for a NIPPONIA Hotel near my home and stay again. At the roadside station, high school students were collecting survey responses about soap they had made, which helped me understand their strong commitment to revitalizing Iyo Ozu.

This was my first time staying overnight in Ozu, and it felt as though the whole town was welcoming us, making for a very comfortable trip. Our Room had a castle view, so we could enjoy the cherry blossoms and the castle all to ourselves—it was wonderful. The bar and restaurant also had a great atmosphere and were lovely. Since our Room was next to the restaurant, we were slightly aware of people coming and going at night, but otherwise we were very satisfied. I would like to visit another location with the same concept as well.

Hands-on Firefly Experience with a Guided Neighborhood Walk
It felt completely out of the ordinary! I didn’t have a very good impression of renovated traditional houses turned into a Hotel, but when the Hotel staff told us about the building’s history, we learned it used to be a storehouse owned by someone who made Japanese candles. Various items were left behind so you can see traces of life from that time. It also seems each building has its own unique character. The interior had the charm of an old house, and because they use the original structure, there are interesting differences from a typical Hotel—such as the bath only being able to go in one specific place due to the layout. What surprised me even more was that there’s a whole town centered around the Hotel, and we enjoyed walking around with restaurants, leather goods shops, and stores selling local sake. Next time, I’d like to stay in a different Room or try another area’s traditional house Hotel.

It was fun.
The concept of staying in a traditional house in the middle of town was interesting. The staff’s dedication also came through.

First stay in six years
I stayed here again for the first time in six years. There are more guest rooms than before, and they’ve added another lounge as well! There are also more cafés and restaurants in town, which made the stay even more enjoyable. The food was just as delicious as ever, and it’s an Accommodation that makes you want to come back. It was great not only to enjoy the Hotel, but also to enjoy the town.

It was an otherworldly experience.
I now clearly understand what a decentralized Hotel means. It’s an initiative to revitalize the entire town, and I truly want to support it. Not only the Hotel staff, but also local people we met on the street—even middle school students—greeted us, and we could really feel the town’s commitment. It would be nice to have a few more options for dinner. (Aburaya was delicious.) Still, the quiet nights are part of this town’s charm. Of course the castle was great, and Garyu Sanso was small but very impressive as well. This time we were able to use coupons and felt it was good value for the price, but I would be happier if the official rates were a bit lower.

I had a relaxing and enjoyable time.
The atmosphere of the room matched perfectly with the lord's villa by the castle and riverside, allowing for a relaxing and pleasant time. Dinner was very delicious and served in the room. Both the alcohol and other drinks were enjoyable. Breakfast felt quite ordinary, but overall it is an accommodation I would love to visit again.

Strolling Through the Castle Town for Adults
This summer was particularly hot, and with the sudden drop in temperature, I believe many have encountered stunning autumn foliage this year wherever they visited. Here, we were able to enjoy especially picturesque autumn leaves along with exceptional hospitality and delicious cuisine, creating wonderful memories. If given the opportunity, we would love to visit again! However, as some of us have concerns about our knees, the handrails leading to the second floor posed a bit of a challenge for us. That said, it does not diminish how remarkable our experience was overall. We are happily recommending this place to friends and acquaintances. With heartfelt gratitude...

Perfect for accommodation-focused trips
I visited for a solo trip with the main purpose of relaxing at the accommodation. From the pick-up service at the station to ensuring my stay met my preferences, everything was thoughtfully arranged. On the second day, there was a group guest visit, but meal times and other arrangements were adjusted so I could enjoy a quiet and peaceful time throughout my stay. The meals were delicious, and even during a multiple night stay, they ensured variety in the menu, which was very satisfying. I stayed in a renovated room that used to be a storehouse; it had an excellent atmosphere and was such an enjoyable space that I didn’t feel bored staying inside all day. It had been quite some time since I last spent such relaxing alone time, making this vacation truly fulfilling. The bath featured a large tub that took some time to fill up with water but offered an open and refreshing experience when soaking with stretched legs. The bath and washroom are located on the first floor, which can get quite cold at night—this might be challenging for those sensitive to cold temperatures. However, thanks to renovations, it felt much warmer than I initially expected. The town of Ozu itself also has great charm; it’s quiet and perfect for unwinding while refreshing your mind. Since each room seems to have its own unique atmosphere, I’d love to try staying in another room next time!

Charming Accommodation
The entire Ozu Town is a castle town with many historic buildings. Strolling around is very enjoyable. Rooms are scattered throughout the town, and the room we stayed in was far from the front desk. We were able to rely on the pick-up car multiple times and had a comfortable stay without any inconvenience. Thank you very much!

Unfortunately.
I visited the Hotel inspired by its concept. Indeed, the location is excellent, the building has been beautifully restored, and there was a great view of the castle. While the exterior aspects are impressive, I felt that less attention was given to content. I visited with my elementary school-aged child, but both the quantity and quality of meals were insufficient. The menu included items like fried shrimp and hamburgers—common dishes lacking creativity—which left me wondering if that was all. There seemed to be no effort to introduce children to local specialties or quality ingredients from the region. Breakfast especially felt sparse; there were large empty spaces on the tray, leaving us with little more than rice topped with seasoning as an option. The adult course meals looked elaborate in presentation but lacked attention to flavor and had small portions that left us unsatisfied. The lounge is available but only offers drinks without any light snacks or appetizers, which differs from what one might expect from a typical lounge atmosphere. At check-in, I requested assistance in having our luggage brought up to our Room; however, it took an hour and a half for it to arrive without any explanation about where it had been during that time or how it was handled. If this Hotel continues relying solely on its concept and uniqueness for attracting guests without addressing these issues, I would find it difficult to revisit. That said, I truly appreciated how wonderful this town is overall and recognized how much of a role this Hotel plays in revitalizing the area. I hope improvements will be made so we can look forward to visiting again in better circumstances!

This is a Hotel you should not stay at.
The main contact is only the general desk of Nipponia Hotel, and there is never anyone at the front desk. Since the front desk is not located where you stay, it becomes very inconvenient when no one is available. Upon arriving by taxi, I couldn't find the front desk and had to call Nipponia to ask for its contact information. I also had to call to find out where my room was (this was not decided in advance). As I arrived after 7 PM with a no-meal plan, I asked for recommendations for nearby dinner spots and assistance with reserving a taxi for the next morning. However, they only provided phone numbers and told me to make reservations myself. Eventually, they managed to book a dinner spot through the front desk but informed me that taxis were fully booked. They arranged one from a neighboring town but asked me to approve an additional ¥3,000 transportation fee. When I requested breakfast at 7:30 AM before my 8:30 AM taxi ride, they initially said breakfast starts at 8 AM but later made an exception and reserved it for 7:30 AM while providing prior instructions on where breakfast would be served. Although I was told that drinks in the refrigerator were free to use as desired, there was no explanation about its location; eventually found out during checkout and took some items home. During bath preparation explained by staff at check-in time, hot water could not be reheated; half of it had to be discarded before adjusting temperature manually—barely usable afterward. In duplex-style rooms like mine upstairs heating caused downstairs areas cold enough requiring blankets wrapped around sleeping arrangements instead wearing personal pajamas due mismatched sizes provided attire towels limited single piece per guest morning walk returning key malfunctioned unable access without complaint raised dining area assistance granted unlocking doors forgotten belongings checked departure shortly receiving notification missing keys necessitating return trip costing ¥2k extra fare despite initial agreement covering adjacent-town surcharge waived sympathetic driver reducing total expense further confusion arose courier service awaiting unattended package collection resolved successfully albeit frustrating experience overall beautiful restored architecture marred noisy nighttime wind traffic poor operational management disappointing outcome JTB representative later confirmed subpar operations regrettably severe extent encountered unlikely revisit decision justified absence direct-contact details website evident warning sign ignored regretfully

Thank you.
Ozu is my hometown. I am deeply grateful to NIPPONIA HOTEL for restoring it so beautifully. I was glad to meet the general manager this time and express my gratitude directly. The meals always surprise me, and I enjoy them both deliciously and delightfully. This was my fifth stay, but each time in a different room, experiencing a unique atmosphere every visit, leaving me very satisfied. Every walk from the guest room to the restaurant makes me marvel at how beautiful Ozu is as a town. I hope NIPPONIA HOTEL continues its great work—I have high expectations for the future!

A Journey to Ōzu
The view of Ozu Castle and the surrounding town was wonderful. Both dinner and breakfast featured locally sourced dishes, which were incredibly delicious. We especially enjoyed comparing the flavors of Aihime beef and Akane Wagyu filet; the meat was tender and flavorful. The lounge offered a great selection of drinks, which we appreciated. However, when trying to use the coffee machine, one extraction did not fill a cup completely, which was disappointing. Other guests also mentioned this issue.

A Journey to Fully Enjoy Ozu
I am a big fan of NIPPONIA and have enjoyed staying at various locations such as Hakodate, Sawara in Chiba, Nara, and Takehara in Hiroshima. This trip was another delightful experience. Among the NIPPONIA accommodations, this one in Ozu is the largest, with facilities spread throughout the town. Walking around the town while spotting the NIPPONIA signs everywhere added to the fun of exploring. The town itself is compact enough to explore within a day, so during my two-night stay, I spent time relaxing at the hotel and taking leisurely strolls around when I felt like it. The staff's hospitality was exceptional, and chatting with them became a memorable part of my trip. The exclusive lounge for guests was well-equipped and enjoyable; I made good use of it for coffee after breakfast, daytime breaks, and evening drinks. One concern I noticed was that some foreign guests mistook citrus liqueur for orange juice due to its similar appearance. It might be helpful to include some kind of warning label since many international visitors who cannot read Japanese seem to stay here as well. This could prevent issues if pregnant women or children accidentally consume it. Each visit makes me love NIPPONIA even more. Now I'm wondering where to go next—though returning to Ozu sounds like a great idea because this experience was truly wonderful!

It was a very charming castle town. The French dinner at night was excellent. The Room was wonderful, but it was disappointing that there was no TV. Although it's a Hotel where you can stay with your dog, it would have been better if there were more places accessible with dogs. It might be perfect for foreigners!

The bar is amazing!
I enjoyed staying at Nipponia Hotel, and this was my fourth visit after Takehara, Yame, and Dazaifu. That day, the snow covered the streets beautifully. Although it was very cold, the room had air conditioning in several spots and even a kotatsu, making it very comfortable. The most impressive facility was definitely the bar! Both types of mandarin juice were delicious. They also served "Maou" shochu, which made for a luxurious experience. I thought it was wonderful that hotel guests could enjoy special benefits at nearby shops—such a great way to connect with the local community. Thanks to this hotel stay, I fell in love with Ozu as well. I’m looking forward to visiting again!

We stayed at the accommodation and reflected on new directions for accommodations. The technique of transforming old houses into something modern was impressive. The French cuisine for dinner was excellent. Breakfast was also satisfying, and the simmered sea bream was wonderful. Many thanks to the chef.

We visited with our dog and were able to have the dog run all to ourselves, which made our little rascal very happy running around! It was excellent.
We stayed here for a family trip. With two young children, we were able to relax without worrying about others, and the Room was comfortable and pleasant. The meals were delicious, even my picky husband enjoyed them. However, the design of the curtains in the Room and dining area was similar, making it hard to distinguish between them. The provided simple map was also a bit confusing. *laughs* Overall, we were very satisfied and would love to stay here again!

The night cherry blossoms were beautiful.
The room, which was once a storehouse, was a very charming space. The cherry blossoms along the path to Ozu Shrine nearby were illuminated, and we could even see the night blossoms through the ceiling window of the Room. Sitting on the sofa, enjoying a drink from the Room while gazing at the cherry blossoms through the small ceiling window felt like an incredibly luxurious moment. Although it is a Hotel coexisting with the town, it gave me a sense that they share a wonderful relationship. This harmonious atmosphere seemed to enhance both the value of the town and that of the Hotel. I am glad I had an opportunity to stay in such a space. It was truly an enriching and unique experience with depth and new style. Thank you very much!
