The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko
The milky, cloudy Onsen water drawn directly from the Nikko Yumoto hot spring source, the refined hospitality, and the cuisine made with an abundance of local ingredients were truly outstanding. In the greater Kanto area, this is one of my top three most satisfying stays—alongside Asaba and Gora Kadan Fuji—and I highly recommend it for anniversaries and other special occasions.

We were extremely satisfied.
What happens when the world-famous Ritz offers an Onsen? I visited while trying not to set my expectations too high. The result: I was absolutely delighted—it was outstanding. The milky, cloudy water warmed me to the core, making it a truly exceptional Onsen experience. The Room was also highly functional and incredibly comfortable. On top of that, the quality of the Japanese cuisine was superb—without a doubt Michelin-level. And the highlight was the staff’s exceptional hospitality. In particular, I was deeply impressed by Assistant Manager Seimiya in Japanese cuisine for his flawless, proactive service that stayed one step ahead at all times. I will definitely return.

We had a wonderful time.
There was an event at Revo and Villa Aida, so I decided to stay overnight. The Room was comfortable. The quality of the hot spring water in the large public bath was excellent. The interior design throughout the property is also elegant and nice. I had dinner and breakfast at the Japanese restaurant, but it did not meet my expectations. Other improvements I would like to see are providing nightwear in addition to the in-house loungewear, and installing a vending machine because the selection in the Room refrigerator is limited.

Perfect for a Refreshing Break
I stayed for one night starting on a Monday at the end of July, escaping the Tokyo heat for the cool air of Oku-Nikko for the first time in a while. Since check-in was likely to take some time, I had lunch first and then checked in. I enjoyed the Onsen I had been looking forward to, and had dinner at the Lakehouse. The atmosphere, food, service, and wine were all excellent. I also enjoyed breakfast. One disappointment was that there was no toner or lotion among the amenities, and pajamas and an iron were not in the Room—I requested them and they were brought to me. Other than that, it was conveniently located close to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls.

As expected of The Ritz-Carlton, it was wonderful.
My first trip to Nikko felt far from Osaka, but I was finally able to visit Ritz, which I had wanted to go to for so long. It was such an extraordinary experience and incredibly refreshing. The weather wasn’t great, but the temperature was 10°C lower than in Osaka, which made it very comfortable. The Room was beautiful and had a view of Lake Chuzenji. Above all, the Onsen was the best! At first, I thought the sulfur scent was quite strong when I stepped in, but the water left my skin silky smooth—I wanted to soak in it every day. That night we had burgers via in-room dining; they were hearty, delicious, and left us completely satisfied! I also chose the Japanese breakfast I had been looking forward to, and it absolutely lived up to expectations. We used the shuttle bus as well. I thought I might get carsick on Irohazaka, but the driver’s careful and skillful driving really impressed me. It became a truly wonderful memory. Thank you very much.

I felt there was a s...
I felt there was a slight gap between the price and the level of service. We chose Japanese cuisine for dinner. The staff member who assisted us, originally from Nepal, was very kind and pleasant. They did not seem to speak much Japanese, and perhaps assumed that our family did not understand Japanese either. They made a great effort to explain the dishes in English. While I truly appreciated their thoughtfulness, I personally found explanations in English harder to follow. Even though we chose Japanese cuisine, it ended up feeling somewhat like a fusion-style meal. Also, during the meal, I was very surprised to see guests at the next table changing their baby’s diaper on the sofa in the dining area. Of course, I fully understand this is not the Hotel’s responsibility. However, because we paid a high price and were looking forward to a special atmosphere and dining experience worthy of it, unfortunately we did not feel it offered sufficient value this time.

So-so.
First, please note that this is not an absolute rating, but an evaluation relative to what you pay. If you usually stay at Accommodations in the same price range, you will probably feel the same. Unless you have enough flexibility to treat it as a Business Hotel for sightseeing purposes, I can’t recommend it. The Facility is decent simply because it’s new, but considering the price, it feels like the bare minimum. I was surprised by the service level. There was an early check-in benefit, so I arrived expecting to use it, but they matter-of-factly told me that I could check in at the normal check-in time. Since it was the rainy season and not a busy tourist period at all, I asked whether early check-in wasn’t possible even with the benefit; they said they would confirm. They came back and said they had arranged a Room that could be checked into five minutes later—almost as if they were doing me a favor—so I ended up feeling apologetic. I won’t go into more detail, but you can probably imagine the rest. For guests like me who want to enjoy their stay and don’t want to risk choosing the wrong Accommodation, this place is very questionable. If that describes you and you’re staying around here, I recommend Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel instead.

I can’t believe the Ritz brand let me down...
At JPY 272,000 per Room, it is nowhere near worth the price. If it were “A Nitts Carlton Nikko” (JPY 80,000 per Room), I could understand. The day before, we stayed in Nikko City in a 140 m² guest room with two open-air baths for almost the same price, which made this feel even more overpriced. As described below, there were also many issues with the service, and overall it felt a step below other Hotels in the same price range. My wife and I have a deep attachment to this brand—we even got engaged at “The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo”—but this time my wife’s birthday was ruined and we are extremely disappointed. Regarding dinner (course at Lakehouse): Overall portions were small, and despite being a course meal there was not even bread included. Both of us were still hungry afterward and ended up eating snacks we had brought as backup. It also took about 20 minutes before our first drink was served. Before focusing on listing ingredients without dish names or writing about culinary concepts on the menu, I would like them to get the basics right. Regarding service: We informed them in advance that it was my wife’s birthday, but there were no congratulatory words at check-in and no message card in the Room. On the shuttle bus when leaving, despite the rain we were dropped off in an uncovered area, and our luggage was casually left to get wet as well. We did not feel any of the attentive consideration expected from a luxury Hotel. Regarding their signature large public bath: First of all, aging deterioration from sulfur was more noticeable than in the photos. Perhaps for ambiance, but the bathing area is so dark that at night you can barely tell shampoo from body soap. I value relaxation in bathing areas, but it was so dark that anxiety outweighed any sense of comfort—I could not relax at all at night. There were many foreign guests staying there as well; however, manners inside were poor—used towels left behind and even someone (though only one person) bringing a smartphone into the bathing area. My wife also complained that it is a long walk to reach the large public bath and that she felt cold after bathing because of how far it is back to her Room. It was one thing after another. Simply providing Onsen facilities means nothing if proper culture and etiquette do not come with them. The good points were the lobby atmosphere and interior design throughout—the space had an imposing grandeur that felt true to The Ritz brand. However, looking back now, those spacious common areas may actually highlight how compact the guest rooms are—and ultimately contribute to lower guest satisfaction overall.

A Wonderful Stay with Excellent Facilities and Dining
The Facility was excellent, and I had a very comfortable stay. All of the staff were kind, and the meals at the restaurant were delicious as well. It was such a wonderful stay that I would definitely like to visit again. On the other hand, there were a few points that felt slightly disappointing. Because the person who assisted me upon arrival was wearing a mask, it was difficult to hear their voice clearly and also hard to read their facial expressions. In addition, I saw moments when foreign floor staff appeared to be running at full speed down the hallway or walking while looking at their phone, which felt disappointing considering the Hotel’s atmosphere. There were also situations where communication in Japanese was difficult; if guidance and service could be improved a bit more, I think guests would be able to stay with greater peace of mind.

A pleasant stay
We had a wonderful time. There were some guests with children, but it was very quiet and we were able to relax at a leisurely pace. We also enjoyed afternoon tea, and the sweets served in the stylish lounge were absolutely fantastic. The Room was very clean and luxurious, with all amenities provided, so we were extremely satisfied. The large public bath had excellent water quality and left us feeling refreshed. The only drawback was that the large public bath was quite dark in places, which felt unsafe… It was hard to see and seemed potentially dangerous. Other than that, we were completely satisfied!

Golden Week
I was looking forward to the Hotel library, and the selection of books with a Nikko feel was excellent. At dinner, we were seated next to international guests, which gave it an almost Italian vibe and made it very enjoyable. Finally, the yuba soba for lunch at the restaurant and the Japanese-style strawberry dessert were both delicious, and the tea was wonderful as well.

Golden Week
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko, with its Onsen, was a wonderfully relaxing place to unwind and feel refreshed both physically and mentally. The front garden of the Onsen building and the open-air bath were filled with the scent of sulfur, and hearing Japanese bush warblers singing there made it truly special. The morning zazen session was also excellent.

Diamond member benefits were not provided.
There were no Diamond member sweets benefits, so I felt cheated. I arrived around 2:30 PM expecting an early check-in, but I was kept waiting and didn’t get checked in until after 3:00 PM—so in the end I received neither benefit. I asked the front desk, and they said there were no sweets. Is that really acceptable? I ordered room service, but none of it was worth the price, and breakfast was the same. The dining quality is not on the same level as other Ritz-Carlton properties.

Riverside Accommodation
The Room was spacious and clean. However, it was inconvenient that there were no trash bins in the sitting area or the Room. It was also inconvenient that there was no notepad or pen near the phone. The Onsen is not particularly elaborate, but the water temperature was just right.

Consistently warm hospitality
I stay here every February. Last year, the in-room breakfast felt like it had declined in quality compared to before, but this year it was excellent and truly reflected Ritz-Carlton quality. However, it took too long for ice and bath salts to be delivered to the room, which was somewhat disappointing. Also, although I requested in advance that the katsu sandwich I ordered be billed separately, it ended up being included with the other charges. This was an operational mistake, and I would like to see it improved.

The accommodation wa...
The accommodation was wonderful, and I had a very satisfying stay. However, I later noticed that despite already paying the accommodation fee through IKYU.com, there was a pending charge for the same amount. When I called in a panic, I was told it was an authorization hold for the deposit. At check-in, I don’t recall being informed about such a large authorization hold being placed. (Since the amount is significant, I'm still worried if it will actually be canceled later.) Additionally, when I first called to confirm this issue, I was told that they would check with the relevant department and call me back. However, no one returned my call. When I followed up again by phone, it seemed like my concern wasn’t properly addressed. The response from staff was disappointing. As others have mentioned as well, their handling of payments seems careless. While experienced travelers might understand express check-out or deposit systems well enough on their own, first-time guests may not be familiar with these processes or payment structures. It would have been helpful if these were explained clearly during check-in or check-out. I initially thought this would be a place I'd want to visit again without question—but now I've decided not to return anymore. This experience has left me deeply saddened.

The most uncomfortable Hotel in life
Stayed in mid-November on a weekend, with two rooms offering a view of Lake Chuzenji. One night with two meals included cost approximately 400,000 yen per room, totaling around 800,000 yen for both rooms. I typically stay at accommodations costing no less than 100,000 yen per night and have stayed at such hotels approximately 50 to 80 nights annually—totaling over 1,000 stays in my lifetime. I believe I have a general sense of what to expect from high-end accommodations. This was my third stay at this accommodation (the previous two stays also left me with many concerns; however, this time exceeded acceptable limits). This is my first review post—I am unsure if it will be effective but hope it helps adjust expectations for future guests considering staying here. Below are the pros and cons: **Pros (entirely environmental rather than hotel-related):** 1. Onsen water quality. 2. Scenic views (Mount Nantai). **Cons (in order of experience from check-in):** 1. The attendant did not pay attention to those behind them and caused family members to become separated. 2. Received an explanation about the meaning of "turndown service," as if it were assumed I was unfamiliar with the term—perhaps consider rephrasing such explanations. 3. One of the two rooms lacked strawberries in its dessert. 4. Despite being asked about needing a baby crib during a prior phone call and requesting one, there were insufficient cribs upon arrival (eventually secured one later that evening—how does that happen?). 5. Waited 30 minutes after appetizers during dinner and an hour during breakfast before receiving food. 6. Pre-ordered fruit via room service after being informed service ended at 10 PM; however, no wrap or cover was provided to prevent drying out—a basic expectation. 7. Requested lighting for the balcony lamp; however: - The string on one lamp was too short to ignite it properly. - A replacement lamp brought instead had an excessively long string causing flames beyond its wind guard—the glass became blackened with soot as a result. 8. Found partially used mouthwash among room amenities—a clear oversight in preparation standards. 9. Stayed on the fifth floor where hallways had visible dust accumulation; carpet fibers clumped together indicated vacuuming likely hadn’t been done for weeks—evidence suggests insufficient cleaning staff or poor facility management practices overall. 10. When asked how our stay went upon checkout—and responding honestly that it was unpleasant—the response was merely “sorry” spoken softly without any follow-up questions seeking clarification or feedback. It is evident that poor working conditions are affecting staff morale negatively—they appeared visibly stressed throughout our stay.

If the service is excellent, a perfect score of 5.
This was a repeat visit, but unfortunately, the poor service at the very end stood out. Most of the staff were polite and left a good impression, but there seemed to be some unmotivated staff members, which was quite noticeable this time. I had to call three times for a simple request. During the final payment as well, there was no smile or clear communication; even when I asked for clarification, there was no response. It might have been just bad luck with that particular staff member, but it also raises concerns about training quality, so I rated it 4. Improving staff training could help ensure better experiences and encourage repeat visits in the future.

I was charged twice.
I was double-charged for the accommodation fee. This time, I had already paid via Online Credit Card Payment before my stay. To avoid waiting during the checkout process, I was recommended to use Express Checkout. Thinking it would be convenient since it would only include room service and dinner drinks, I decided to use it. However, when I later checked the invoice sent by email, I found that the total amount—including accommodation fees and dinner charges that should have already been paid—was charged again: approximately 460,000 yen. Upon emailing immediately to inquire about this issue, it turned out to be a double charge. If I hadn't checked thinking it was just for room service fees, the hotel wouldn't have even noticed this mistake! They mentioned something about a lack of coordination on their end—but how can someone who can't verify such things be in charge of billing? Is this checkout service really beneficial for guests? Even though I'll get refunded eventually, it's still an unnecessary payment of 460,000 yen and wasted time with emails—not to mention the frustration after returning home... If you can't manage such services properly, you should stop offering them altogether. While there may be times when I'll stay here again in the future, I'll never use Express Checkout again. The service quality was so disappointing that it's not even worth one star!

It was excellent.
The Hotel was excellent. However, the public bath was dimly lit, and the slippery floor felt dangerous. Dinner was Western-style, but it would have been nice to have bread included. The shuttle bus was comfortable, but I wish there were more frequent services. Other than that, I was very satisfied. The Room's bath was fantastic, and the view from the balcony was relaxing. Whether in the Hotel lobby, bar, or anywhere else, I felt at ease. The staff's service was also outstanding.

The facility itself ...
The facility itself is clean and satisfactory. The restaurant service was also satisfying. However, both check-in and billing were extremely slow, giving the impression that guest convenience was not a priority. While each staff member seemed to be doing their best, communication among them appeared questionable. It felt very much like an international chain, and considering the amenities provided, it may not be suitable for older guests.

Activities are excellent.
We stayed during the September holiday. Our room had a view of Lake Chuzenji, and we could also see Mount Nantai to the right. The serene atmosphere, despite it being a holiday period, allowed us to completely relax. The Ritz's one and only Onsen was spacious and so comfortable that we could have stayed there forever. The breakfast, which we were most looking forward to, was delightful with fresh vegetables and eggs sourced from dedicated farmers. Additionally, the restaurant staff explained each dish with great care, making us feel their love for what they do. A must-mention is the activities offered—highly recommended when staying at The Ritz! The friendly staff shared many insights about Nikko's charm that we might not have discovered on our own. Thank you for an extraordinary and unique holiday experience!

There is no greater satisfaction.
Completely satisfied with the highest quality. The facility, onsen, meals, and customer service were all healing and made for an unforgettable stay. If I may point out a downside: while I understand it must be challenging to manage such a large facility, there was a delay in being guided to the room—50 minutes after check-in—and luggage delivery took several more minutes after that. Excuses like "it's busy because it's the last day of summer vacation" or "we're doing things in order" are disappointing for a facility of this level. Other than that, everything was amazing! This is my number one accommodation choice to visit again! Thank you for an incredible time!

Perfect Hotel for a Summer Retreat!
This was my third multiple night stay at this accommodation. This time, I stayed in the "Premium Suite"! The room offered an incredible view of Lake Chuzenji! During summer, the highest temperature by Lake Chuzenji in Nikko is 23°C, with morning and evening lows at 16°C—perfect weather! However, the UV rays are strong, so be cautious about sunburn. I was glad to have brought sunglasses! This hotel is the world's first "Onsen Hotel" by Ritz-Carlton. The onsen features a milky white sulfur spring with a distinctive sulfur scent that adds to its charm. While the bath area is excellent, it feels slightly dim for elderly guests—caution is advised to avoid slipping or falling! The meals were impeccable as always! I enjoyed wine pairing again during this visit. For breakfast, since we were staying in a Premium Suite, we opted to have it served in our room! Escaping from urban noise and heat makes this one of my top choices for accommodations—I can't wait to return again!

Thank you for the wonderful trip. Not only were the facilities such as the bath and Room excellent, but also the staff's attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and efficiency were outstanding. The morning temple walk activity on the following day was particularly memorable with great weather and a kind, attentive guide who made this trip even more special. I would love to return next year and plan to bring my son along next time.

Perfect for relaxing while enjoying the view of Lake Chuzenji.
Lake Chuzenji in Nikko was a delightful visit after a long time. The spacious lobby, scenic guest rooms, restaurant, and bath facilities typical of a resort made for a relaxing stay. While many hotels and restaurants have earlier dinner times post-COVID, this Hotel offered only two options: 5:30 PM or 8:00 PM. Due to our schedule, we chose the 8:00 PM slot. Fortunately, the dishes were served smoothly without delays. The Hotel accommodates both adults and families with children. Thanks to its spacious layout, the presence of children did not disturb the atmosphere, making it an enjoyable stay for everyone.

The Ritz-Carlton's service was better in the past.
I visited to celebrate a birthday. I was looking forward to the renowned service of The Ritz-Carlton, but the experience was disappointing from check-in. The staff's response was subpar, possibly due to inexperience, and the requested Room was not available. Even the Room guidance felt lacking. There seemed to be poor coordination among staff regarding turndown service and breakfast, leading to repeated efforts being necessary. Overall, it was underwhelming. Only the Facility itself was excellent.

It was a wonderful stay.
The Room is spacious, with the living area and bedroom separated by a glass door, allowing you to work in the living room while your child sleeps at night—very convenient. The meals at the Japanese restaurant were delicious, and we enjoyed dining there during our stay. They were considerate of children, and we also visited the Lake House. Both places were very child (infant)-friendly. There were activities like fireworks and stamp rallies for children to enjoy, making it a delightful experience for the whole family.

The environment and facilities are excellent.
I stayed at the accommodation for the first time around its 5th anniversary. The modern design with a touch of Japanese style, along with the comfort of the room and the onsen large bath (including water quality), was as excellent as reputed. For dinner, I enjoyed a kaiseki course at the Japanese restaurant. The presentation and portion were satisfying, but perhaps due to a lack of flavor variation, I found myself slowing down towards the end. For breakfast, I opted for a Western-style meal (requested in advance). However, both Japanese and Western breakfasts were served in the same Japanese restaurant (personal preference: Western meals should be served in a Western setting). The meal consisted of parts of their signature Japanese bento box replaced with Western items. While I understand this might be due to staff arrangements, considering its price point, it felt underwhelming (suggestions: salad options, freshly prepared egg dishes in front of guests, or an enhanced bakery selection would improve it). The room and onsen were outstanding.
