    I’d been curious abo...

    I’d been curious about this Hotel for a while, so I decided to stay here on my way back from a business trip to Kyoto. The night view from the 8th floor (?) during check-in was stunning, and the Facility had a calm, refined atmosphere. The Room was well designed and easy to use, and best of all, despite being in a Kyoto building, the high ceiling made it feel spacious and not at all cramped. I heard the Japanese breakfast was limited to the first 30 servings, so I woke up early and headed to the restaurant. There were about 15 small dishes; they were well balanced with some bolder flavors that even international guests would enjoy, and it was a delicious meal with plenty of vegetables. I’d love to stay again if I have the chance.

    The area around the property feels very unsafe.

    The Hotel’s facilities are excellent, but perhaps because it is close to the entertainment district, there were many young people shouting loudly late at night and I could not sleep at all. There is also a sofa in front of the Hotel entrance, and I saw young people sleeping there in awkward positions, and some people even threw away cigarette butts. Because the area around the Hotel feels far too unsafe, I don’t think I will stay again. However, aside from the soundproofing, the facilities and the staff’s hospitality are wonderful, so I would definitely recommend it to those who are not concerned about the surrounding environment.

    I arrived at the Hot...

    I arrived at the Hotel well before check-in, but since my Room was ready, I was able to enter early. Thank you very much—I was able to relax. From the front desk, the restaurant, and my Room, I enjoyed views of Higashiyama and the city of Kyoto. I was disappointed that I couldn’t visit the guest lounge at night (due to personal reasons). The Hotel is along the Takase River, and I can imagine how beautiful it must be during cherry blossom season. I hope to return around that time. For breakfast, my husband was very satisfied with the Japanese set, and I chose French toast since I have a sweet tooth. It was also nice to be able to choose.

    Annual Accommodation

    It has become my annual tradition to travel solo to Kyoto, and I always stay here. The location is perfect for getting around, so it serves as a great base. On top of that, the Facilities are more than sufficient for me—things like the bath salts are especially helpful. I also appreciate that drinks and other refreshments are always available in the guest lounge. I stayed again this year, and everyone’s hospitality was outstanding, so I plan to stay again next year.

    Thank you for a wonderful time.

    I checked in after a nostalgic walk along the Takase River. The 8th-floor front desk felt understated and wonderful, almost like part of the breathtaking view through the wall-to-wall windows. The bonfire patio and indoor space on the guests-only floor were very calm and relaxing. The toasted marshmallows and wine were delicious. The staff were pleasant and welcoming with warm smiles. The Room was clean and had a great view. A few things I noticed: 1) The emergency exit information panel on the door was very hard to read—the text and arrows were unclear. This is one of the most important things in a Hotel, so I hope it can be improved. 2) There was no full-length mirror. 3) There was no towel rack (there were small hooks, but they felt inconvenient). 4) There was only a business-style table and chair for computer use; even a small simple table and chair would have been nice (a chair may be better than a sofa due to concerns such as dust mites). For breakfast, I had French toast. It was very tasty, and I appreciated the attentive service—such as refilling my coffee even though it was a buffet. This time it was a rushed one-night stay, so I would love to stay again and enjoy a more relaxed Hotel stay.

    I’d like to stay here again.

    On our first trip to Kyoto in a while, we stayed at this Hotel that we had been interested in for some time. We had made a Reservation for a twin Room with Child Sharing Existing Bedding for one elementary school-aged child, but since a larger Room was available, they upgraded us. The view was wonderful, and since our child is in sixth grade and almost the same size as an adult, our whole family was truly touched by the staff’s thoughtful consideration. For breakfast, the three of us each ordered different dishes, and all of them were delicious. The lounge had a great atmosphere, and there was a wide selection of drinks. The staff were kind and took great care of us. We would love to stay again.

    It was excellent.

    I was very satisfied. The entrance of the Hotel might be a bit hard to find as there are other stores around. Please look for it. I thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese-style breakfast at a leisurely pace! The view was also great. It was helpful that a hair iron was available, and I could borrow it. The lobby is on the top floor, but being able to check out via phone from the Room was very convenient.

    The Room was functio...

    The Room was functional, clean, and provided a comfortable stay. Bath salts were also available, which added to the pleasant experience. It would have been perfect if facial amenities were provided. The dinner at the restaurant and the limited 30 servings of Japanese breakfast in the morning were both visually appealing and delicious. I look forward to staying again.

    I was satisfied.

    This is my second stay. I upgraded the Room grade this time, and I was very satisfied with the spacious Room. Once again, I enjoyed using the record player rental to listen to music. The Japanese-style breakfast was also very delicious. This is a Hotel I would like to use again.

    The Long-Awaited School Building

    Previously, I stayed in a twin room with a great view of Higashiyama, but the School Wing was even more convenient with its nearby lounge and special services, allowing for a very relaxing stay. The restaurant where breakfast is served offers an amazing view, and both Japanese and Western dishes are incredibly delicious—so much so that it might be hard to leave! Additionally, the location is very convenient as a base for sightseeing. However, please note that Kiyamachi Street in front can remain lively until late at night.

    Very convenient.

    I made a reservation as it was reasonably priced at the right timing. It's truly in the heart of the downtown area. I was worried about noise at night, but it was surprisingly quiet. The accommodation is still new, and the facilities are very clean. It was curious that there wasn’t a body towel for washing, even though there were hairbands—why is that? There’s also a lounge for guests with some light snacks available. This time, I enjoyed perks like sparkling wine and extended check-out time, which made it feel like great value overall. With the station and bus stops nearby, you can easily visit various tourist spots. On your way back to Kyoto Station, it's extremely crowded, so moving early seems like a good idea. Thank you very much!

    Had a comfortable stay.

    The room was located right above the patio, and while there was no view, the room's facilities and amenities were sufficient. The spacious area on the third floor was comfortable, offering services that delighted guests, making me want to stay again.

    Third time

    Over the past four years, I have stayed at other hotels in Kyoto, but after returning to The Gate Hotel Takasegawa after a while, I was reminded of its high basic standards. The cleanliness and hospitality remain excellent, and the breakfast quality has improved even further. It is a hotel that continues to evolve daily, and I was once again impressed by its excellence. The atmosphere of the 8th-floor bar lounge was also delightful. Of course, the staff's service was courteous as well. It was an outstandingly satisfying hotel experience. Thank you very much!

    A hotel you'll want to stay at again

    Close to the downtown area, the location is excellent. The room was clean, and I had a very elegant stay. The staff's service was great, and I plan to stay here again next time!

    Relax in a simple Room.

    The room was an Executive Twin, but it seemed like two single beds placed side by side without stoppers on the bed legs, causing them to shift easily and create a gap in between. Please take note of this. As I wanted to sleep in, I couldn't choose the Japanese breakfast option. It would be great if guests staying in higher-ranked rooms, such as suites, could select Japanese breakfast at check-in instead of being limited by availability. While the buffet selection outside of the main dishes was limited, most items were of high quality and very satisfying. I appreciate the staff accommodating my request slightly outside the designated wagon service hours. Additionally, the two staff members handling wagon service provided excellent hospitality during my stay at the Hotel.

    I decided to stay he...

    I decided to stay here for a relaxing experience during my day trip to Kyoto, considering the convenient access. The location is great, and I was completely satisfied with the Room, lounge, restaurant, and bar! The Diamond Member service was excellent; I enjoyed a complimentary drink at the bar. The food was reasonably priced, and the atmosphere was wonderful. The Japanese breakfast exceeded my expectations, and I also enjoyed the salad and fruit buffet—so much that I ate too much! All staff members at the front desk, bar, restaurant, and cleaning were kind and friendly. There were many international guests which gave me a feeling of being on an overseas trip (laughs). Even though it's close by, I would love to visit this Hotel again if given another opportunity.

    A quiet Hotel in the heart of Kyoto

    A very convenient Hotel just a few minutes from Shijo Kawaramachi. Despite being in the heart of the city, it is quiet as it is slightly tucked away, and the exterior retains the charm of the former Rissei Elementary School. The lobby is located on the top floor, and stepping inside, you are greeted with a breathtaking view of Higashiyama through large windows. The upgraded Room we stayed in was functional and clean. It also offered a panoramic view of Higashiyama, just like from the lobby—a truly stunning scenery to enjoy. The lounge access and various activities available make staying within the Hotel enjoyable as well. Breakfast was delightful with not only selectable main dishes but also an enjoyable buffet. The only minor downside was that there were fewer amenities for women than expected for a Hotel of this level. However, we had such a pleasant stay that we would love to visit again!

    Stunning view from the lobby!

    I returned to enjoy the view of Higashiyama from the lobby once again. This time, the air was clear (though it was quite cold), allowing me to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery of Higashiyama. It’s truly amazing. The Room I stayed in this time was small, but being close to the lounge allowed me to make use of it. The lounge felt as comfortable as being in a living room, and the patio firepit after dark added a nice touch. Although I mentioned that the Room was small, it had a well-equipped business desk, making it ideal for business travelers. Since this place used to be a school, staying here gave me a nostalgic feeling like being in a dormitory. The location is also excellent and one of my favorites. This time I had an early morning for work and couldn’t have breakfast, but next time I plan to enjoy breakfast at leisure while taking in the stunning views!

    The lobby is located on the top floor, offering a spacious and pleasant atmosphere for check-in. Although the guest room was not very large, it was functional and comfortable. I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much!

    Along Takase River - Perfect for Nightlife Enthusiasts

    A former elementary school beautifully renovated into a Hotel. The former schoolyard has been transformed into an open plaza, creating a space where not only hotel guests but also others can gather. The upper floors of the Hotel are visible across the Kamo River from Shijo Ohashi Bridge. Located in an entertainment district, it can be slightly noisy at times. However, its proximity to Kawaramachi, Gion, and Pontocho makes it ideal for those prioritizing nightlife. Staying on the 2nd floor meant I couldn't open my curtains due to the closeness of the plaza below, and walking from the elevator was slightly inconvenient. That said, having separate bath and toilet facilities was comfortable, and enjoying the night view from the bar on the 8th floor was delightful!

    It was a pleasant stay.

    Pro - The room's design is excellent. It feels spacious despite being only 38 square meters. While the view isn't remarkable due to its location in a busy area, the large windows provide an open feel and can be slightly opened for ventilation. The daybed was convenient, and the table was adequately sized and functional. The closet space was sufficient, and though unnecessary for solo travelers, the double basin added comfort. The bathroom with a washing area exceeded expectations with additional amenities like a bucket and chair. Despite having a humidifier, the room didn't feel overly dry, making it very comfortable to stay in. - Free bicycle rental service: Though not heavily advertised on the hotel's website (likely due to limited availability), I could borrow an electric bike for my entire 2-night stay, which made sightseeing much easier. - Rissei Library lending service: Guests can borrow up to three books for free. Although it's more of a small book corner than a full library, their curated selection related to Kyoto was excellent—perfect books or photo collections to enjoy during your trip. - Bar: While overshadowed by promotions focusing on their lounge, the bar was impressive too. A bartender with international sherry qualifications offered an extensive variety of sherries that you wouldn't typically find at regular bars. Con - Almost none; however, if I had to mention one thing—it would be the location. Situated in a bustling downtown area where most establishments cater to younger crowds, it might not offer many quiet dining options suitable for middle-aged solo female travelers nearby. It felt somewhat similar to Kabukicho in Tokyo but wasn't noisy enough to disturb sleep significantly at night. Additionally, Kiyamachi Street is narrow with restricted cycling zones around it; thus reaching bike-friendly roads took some effort even after borrowing bicycles. Overall Impression The hotel follows modern lifestyle trends with its well-defined concept focusing on balance rather than excessiveness—offering guests freedom at their own pace without overwhelming services or amenities like those found in luxury hotels or business hotels (e.g., breakfast buffet options were limited). However minimalistic these aspects may seem compared against traditional standards—they emphasize livability instead—and this thoughtful approach makes staying here highly enjoyable overall!

    Beautiful Hotel

    Clean and beautiful hotel. The room was spacious. The lounge and bar on the 8th floor had a wonderful atmosphere and view. Light snacks, appetizers, and sweets to enjoy with drinks are available. Guests were seen using it at all times of the day. There was also an exclusive lounge for guests on the 3rd floor. The room did not have skincare products like lotion or emulsion provided, which I usually find in other accommodations I stay at, so I regretted not bringing my own. Amenities were at a business hotel standard.

    A one-of-a-kind experience

    The staff's service and hospitality were exceptional, making it a very comfortable hotel. The view from the 8th-floor lobby, bar, and restaurant was breathtaking. The outdoor terrace on the 3rd floor, exclusively for accommodation guests, offered a cozy experience with a bonfire and marshmallow roasting. It’s a place I would love to visit again if given the chance.

There are many attractions and places to explore nearby.     There was hair in the bathtub, which ruined everything.

    When I went to take a bath, I found hair on the floor, which was unpleasant. Cleaning it myself felt disheartening. Everything else was good, and I might stay again if given the chance.
