    This Hotel best preserves the atmosphere of the classic summer retreat, Karuizawa.

    In recent years, with the development of various facilities such as outlets and spa houses, the atmosphere of Karuizawa as a classic summer retreat, originally cultivated by British missionaries in the early Meiji era, has been gradually fading. However, Hotel Otowanomori, located near the heart of Karuizawa's "Old Ginza Street," has preserved this traditional charm. My spouse and I have been visiting this hotel for many years across different seasons. The only season we had not experienced until now was the fresh green season. This time, we finally had the chance to visit during this beautiful period and enjoyed Karuizawa's lush greenery reminiscent of the opening scene in Tatsuo Hori’s "Beautiful Village." Every time we visit, we are reminded of how comfortable all aspects of service at Otowanomori are. The staff is attentive without being overly intrusive—striking a perfect balance in their interaction with guests—a tradition likely honed over many years. This time around, I was particularly impressed again by how delicious their breakfast bread is. Personally, I have never tasted bread better than what they serve here. When we visited last year and checked out at reception, I mentioned that it would be nice to have a foot mat under the stairs in the new building—and on this visit, I noticed that they had thoughtfully addressed my request!     Courtyard with Fresh Greenery

    I was glad to visit during the season when the fresh greenery in the courtyard is beautiful. The room in the new building seemed slightly more spacious than those in the main building. The Wi-Fi speed was slow, and since it was a unit bath, I found the sink a bit inconvenient to use, but I thought it couldn't be helped. Thank you very much.

    A very lovely Hotel, and I am extremely satisfied. The staff were kind and greeted me with a smile every time, making it feel like visiting a familiar Hotel even though it was my first time.

    A quiet Hotel in a convenient location. Enjoy a delicious breakfast!

    We decided on this quiet yet conveniently located hotel for our first stay in Karuizawa, a place we often visit as a couple. The staff kindly accommodated our late-night check-in, and the room we were shown to was very peaceful. The next morning, we enjoyed an elegant breakfast at 9:30 AM, which felt almost like a private dining experience. With three options to choose from, my husband selected an egg dish while I opted for my favorite French toast—and it was absolutely delicious! The inside was fluffy and moist, and pairing it with not only maple syrup but also the accompanying wine salt enhanced its sweetness beautifully. Other breads and desserts were also crafted with great care and tasted amazing, making us want to try dinner here next time as well. The room had a slightly dated feel but was cozy with a lovely view of the courtyard that captured Karuizawa's charm perfectly. Additionally, the unit bath was spacious and relaxing—larger than most you’d typically find elsewhere. One minor inconvenience was the lack of a full-length mirror; this might be an issue if you're dressing formally like we did during this stay. Before leaving, we took commemorative photos at the chapel next door—it made us think about visiting again in another season!

    A charming and cozy Hotel

    We stayed as a couple, and the shuttle service from the station was very helpful. The warm welcome from all the staff was pleasant, and the well-cleaned room left a good impression. We had dinner outside, but we were pleased that they were attentive to our reservations during that time. Breakfast was extremely delicious, and I enjoyed every bite with amazement. I strongly felt that I wanted to eat it again. At the stylish shop, I could get some wonderful items, making it an overall highly satisfying stay until checkout. I definitely want to visit again.

    Good Hotel except for the bath

    The Facility is a historic Hotel, so it feels a bit old, but this also adds to the good atmosphere. However, there is no elevator, so you will need to use the stairs, which may be a concern for elderly guests with knee issues. We chose to upgrade from casual French dining to a full course, but we couldn't tell the difference. The meals were delicious, although, perhaps just this time, the soup for dinner and breakfast was not to our taste. The bath is only an old unit bath in the Room, so it was disappointing that we couldn't relax and warm up. It would be even more attractive if an outdoor bath could be added.

    A serene atmosphere

    I stayed at Otowa no Mori, where I held my wedding ceremony 34 years ago, for the first time in a while. The calm atmosphere remained unchanged, and the staff's service was very natural, making for a very comfortable stay. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were very delicious, and the service was very attentive. Thank you for the wonderful meals. In the morning, there was some construction work being done outside, but the workers greeted us pleasantly, which was nice. The late check-out allowed us to go shopping while taking a walk and return to the warm room, which was also great. It is a hotel I would like to return to someday. Thank you very much.

    A cute hotel with a classic hotel style

    It is a charming Hotel where you can enjoy the atmosphere of a classic Hotel. The meals were also delicious. The Room was spacious and had a nice atmosphere, but the bathroom was like a dull Business Hotel. The location is convenient, and you can walk to the restaurant district of Kyu-Karuizawa.

    It is better to avoid the dinner TsuruTonTan Plan.

    The access is good as it is within walking distance from Karuizawa Station and the old Karuizawa Ginza, the room is classic, clean, and compact, the view from the room is nice, and the bathroom amenities like L'Occitane were good. The breakfast was also delicious, with three types of Western dishes to choose from. However, I chose the TsuruTonTan Udon Kaiseki Plan for dinner, and TsuruTonTan was the worst. Even though the reservation was at 18:30, I went a little earlier but was not guided for a long time. Once seated, the food didn't come for a long time, and after one dish came, the next one took forever. It was Friday, but the restaurant didn't seem that crowded, so I think it might be even worse on weekends. When I passed by the next day at noon, the entrance was overflowing with people. It seems to be a popular restaurant, but the operation might not be good. It took 2 hours for a 5-course kaiseki meal, and since I had a massage reservation at the hotel, I ended up having to run back, which was the only disappointing part of this trip.

    The long-awaited trip...

    I had always wanted to stay at this hotel. It was my first girls' trip with the friend I stayed with. The staff's service was good, and the food was very delicious. However, around midnight on the night we stayed, the hotel's internal phone rang loudly. When my friend answered, it seemed there was a complaint from another guest, asking us to lower our voices a bit. We were surprised because we weren't drinking or making noise, just having a normal conversation. It's true that the conversation might have gotten a bit lively... I've stayed at many hotels and ryokans before, but this was the first time I received a complaint. After that, we continued whispering until 1 AM and then went to sleep. I wonder if there were complaints from other rooms besides the one next door?

    A quiet room in the forest

    This was our second stay with three women. From the room's window, we could see the fresh green trees, and when we opened the window, the air was filled with negative ions, making us want to take a deep breath. It was quiet, and since none of us had to use an extra bed in the triple room, we slept soundly on the comfortable beds. The only downside was the bathroom, which was combined with the toilet, and the shower curtain had a slight odor, which was a bit disappointing. The breakfast was delicious, with soup, salad, and freshly baked bread. However, the coffee was served at the same time as the apple juice at the beginning, and I would have preferred to have it after the meal. (I thought maybe I should have asked.) The staff were always warm and welcoming, making our stay very pleasant. The location is excellent, as it's within walking distance to Old Karuizawa Ginza and also walkable from the station, so I definitely want to use it again.
