    I had an extraordinary stay.

    We had a truly wonderful stay. We stayed for two nights with our 1-year-old daughter. Dinner and breakfast were included, and the food was outstanding. They thoughtfully accommodated our child’s meals, taking her egg allergy and the size of the ingredients into consideration, and she was very happy. The staff also looked after her throughout, so we could enjoy our meal with peace of mind. The Room has special touches that help you forget the busyness of everyday life. Thanks to that, we were able to enjoy an extraordinary experience we don’t usually get to have. We would love to return again next time.

    An Unforgettable Stay That Will Make You Miss Karuizawa

    Everything—the Facility, the service, and the meals—was outstanding, making this an unforgettable stay. First, regarding the Facility: because it is located in the forest, the air is wonderfully fresh, and you are surrounded by greenery as far as the eye can see—a truly refreshing environment. You can sense wildlife you would never encounter in the city, such as wild birds, squirrels, and stag beetles, and feel close to nature. The Onsen has a clean, refreshing quality to it, and there is also an open-air bath where you can soak while looking out over the forest. As for the Room options, there are several with different themes and atmospheres; we stayed in a corner Room on the first floor. From every window we could see lush green trees and fully enjoy a forest-bathing experience. (Our Room faced the Shiraito Highland Way, so there was some traffic during the day; if that might bother you, it may be worth checking availability for a Room not facing the road. For reference, there were almost no cars early in the morning or at night—only during daytime.) The service impressed us with hospitality that ranks among the best of any Hotel we have stayed at. My wife was pregnant and also left-handed; without us having to mention anything, they thoughtfully took care of details such as loungewear sizing as well as providing cushions and blankets and adjusting table settings accordingly. Thanks to their attentiveness, we were able to relax and enjoy both our stay and our meals with peace of mind. The meals were also the best we have had among all Hotels we’ve stayed at so far. The dishes were based on Japanese cuisine—we thoroughly enjoyed Shinshu vegetables—and even the main meat course was truly delicious. It was such a wonderful Hotel that we didn’t want to leave—and it made us want to come back again soon. Next time I’d like to bring more family members and stay longer.

    It was a Hotel where I could relax in peace.

    This Hotel is located within Karuizawa National Park. At an elevation of around 1,100 meters, it stays quite cool even in summer, with beautiful greenery and a very quiet atmosphere. The Hotel is very well maintained, and the Room we stayed in was calm, clean, and truly relaxing. The large public bath also has an open-air bath, which you can enjoy along with the indoor bath. We also appreciated the staff’s thoughtful touches, such as email communication before our stay and a surprise during the meal. This may just be my personal preference, but I wasn’t fully satisfied with dinner. That said, I was able to rest my body slowly and quietly. Thank you very much.

    Retirement Celebration Trip

    This trip was a reward for my retirement and a way to express my gratitude to my wife who has supported me. I chose this Hotel because, looking at the map, it was in the middle of the forest. It left me with the impression of a Hotel full of first-time experiences. The service, cuisine, Facility features, and amenities were all refined and heartfelt in a way I had never experienced before. Having no TV or clock in the Room helped me focus on relaxation. Thanks to you, we were able to spend a wonderful time, and I am truly grateful.

    A bit disappointing.

    We stayed right in the middle of the Obon holiday period. The Hotel is set in nature, and although it rained, the greenery looked vibrant and beautiful. The building and furnishings were a fun mix of antiques and playful touches. The meals were highly original—almost mathematical, with thoughtfully explored combinations—and very enjoyable. Everything was delicious, though we would have been even happier if there had been at least one clearly hot (warm) dish. The Onsen was on the lukewarm side but pleasant, and both the open-air bath and indoor bath were clean. Our Room did not have air conditioning, so it was difficult to manage humidity and temperature during the rainy weather. Also, both the loungewear provided in the Hotel and the pajamas had a fishy odor; they were replaced for us, but unfortunately there was still some smell. It was great to be able to enjoy meals in a private room, and all staff left a very good impression, so it was disappointing that I ended up with an impression of an Accommodation with a musty towel-like smell (though I think it may have been just bad luck). Overall it wasn’t quite for me personally, but it was a good Hotel—and I can understand why there are many repeat guests. Thank you for taking care of us.

    This is a distinctive Hotel.

    Although it is a small Hotel, it is a unique Hotel with themed designs in each Room. The Hotel dinner was less traditional Japanese cuisine and closer to an innovative style that blends Japanese and Western elements, with dishes that are hard to find at other hotels. Everything was delicious. During our stay, it rained and the roads were in poor condition, but the staff kindly lent us shoes and umbrellas for walking. Thanks to that, we could comfortably walk from the Hotel to Ryugaeshi Falls without worrying about our footing, which was a great help. Next time, I would like to visit in a season other than summer.

    We are very satisfied!

    This was our first stay here on a trip for two. We stayed in the Room called “Nagaishi-no-Ma,” a nostalgic-style Room surrounded by furnishings such as a Karuizawa-carved desk, creating a calm and pleasantly reminiscent atmosphere. Above all, the staff’s service and explanations were very courteous, and we were able to spend our time comfortably, making it a wonderful memory. We would love to visit again next year.

    The creative Japanese cuisine is outstanding.

    When searching for a place to stay on IKYU, I start by sorting from the lowest ratings and then decide. The Ancient Hotel has only ratings of 4 or higher, and it was wonderful exactly as rated. In particular, the creative Japanese cuisine deserved more than a 5. The staff’s hospitality was also excellent. This is one of the Hotels I would like to stay at again.

    A warm welcome and outstanding meals.

    This was our third stay. We stayed as a family of three with our 2-year-old son. The hospitality was wonderful, and we were truly touched that all the staff called our son by name whenever they had the chance. And above all, the meals are outstanding. I had seen in Reviews that the food was delicious and had been curious for a long time, but this time we were finally able to book a Plan with meals included, so I came with high expectations— and it exceeded them, delivering an unforgettable level of deliciousness. If you’re staying here, I can confidently say you should definitely include meals! My parents are real food lovers, and I’d love to bring them here as well. When we come to Karuizawa again, we would definitely like to stay here again.

    An ideal Hotel for e...

    An ideal Hotel for enjoying a relaxed, luxurious time surrounded by nature, away from the bustle of the station area and Old Karuizawa. I had wanted to stay here for some time because of its high Reviews, and now I understand why everyone rates it so highly. Recently, several new Hotels have opened in Karuizawa and we tried a few, but none made us want to return overall. This was our first stay here, and everything was wonderful—the atmosphere throughout the property, the Room, the large public bath, the meals, and the warm hospitality from the staff. I’m truly grateful to have found this Hotel. Even my husband, who is usually very critical, seemed to love it. The cuisine by the head chef with a background in Japanese cooking was truly artful and full of surprises, bringing out the best in seasonal ingredients. The homemade ginger ale was rich and pleasantly spicy—my favorite. The cold-brew coffee extracted over time was also bold and paired perfectly with wasanbon sweets. Each dish reflects a Japanese spirit: simple in appearance yet carefully crafted inside, with outstanding flavor. The hot water had a silky texture, and the slightly cooler indoor bath was perfect for soaking slowly. Above all else, I believe this Accommodation’s greatest charm is the attentiveness of its staff. Even at other luxury Hotel chains these days there are more foreign staff members whose Japanese is excellent; however, that uniquely Japanese sense of consideration and anticipation feels distinctive to Japan’s service culture. When I can make time again, I would love to stay here to refresh myself. It’s also something I look forward to being able to choose Rooms with different character each time we visit. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us—it became a wonderful summer holiday.

    This is a very nice accommodation.

    This cozy Accommodation surrounded by forest is perfect for anyone who wants to relax in peaceful silence without worrying about time. Every dish was delicious, and they went above and beyond to accommodate my personal requests. I am truly grateful and deeply moved. All the staff were very kind, and their warm hospitality made this trip especially memorable. Thank you very much.

    It was a very satisfying stay.

    Check-in was welcomed with, “How have you been?” My heart filled with the feeling that I had truly come home. Before dinner, I enjoyed a solo toast with a beer on the Room balcony. In the crisp air, the only background music was birdsong—an unforgettable drink. One of the highlights of my stay is always the food, and this time was no exception. The Western-style breakfast, which previously felt simpler in presentation and variety compared to Japanese breakfast, has been updated. Featuring flavorful chicken ham as the main dish, along with fresh vegetables and naturally leavened bread, and more. Outside the window surrounded by greenery, a squirrel joined me for breakfast—its adorable 모습 was so soothing. Breakfast at Ancient Hotel is truly special. The two-day stay flew by. I waved back at “We look forward to welcoming you again,” and left the Hotel behind. Now I’m already wondering when I should visit next.

    A cozy, lovely Hotel

    The charming Room and lobby, along with the bath in chic tones, made it easy to relax at a leisurely pace. I also think the warm, heartfelt hospitality from everyone, including The Little Prince, added to the comfort. Next time, I’d like to come for a Multiple Night Stay around summer as a cool getaway.

    Thank you for your hospitality. I had another wonderful holiday this time. The unexpected Christmas surprises and warming my shoes on the snowy day made this an unforgettable stay. I look forward to visiting again in a different season. (Since it’s an Onsen, it’s understandable, but the bath was a bit lukewarm, so I gave one less star for that.)

    A tranquil and relaxing Hotel

    This was my third stay. The meals were enjoyable, and all the staff were very friendly, making it a relaxing experience. Thank you very much. Each room has a unique design and character, so next time I would like to stay in a different type of room. The amenities and furnishings are tasteful, and the interior design of the accommodation is excellent, creating a comfortable atmosphere. It feels less like staying at an accommodation and more like staying at a friend's house—so relaxing (just my personal impression). The meals are creative Japanese cuisine by the head chef with crossover elements that surprise me every time with "Wow" or "Interesting" moments on the menu—it’s delightful! Since it changes monthly, I look forward to being surprised again during my next visit... This time coincided with Christmas, so the hotel was beautifully decorated and romantic. It has become one of my favorite accommodations. Though I travel alone, I hope to visit again soon!

    Healing Accommodation

    This was my first time staying at Ancient in Karuizawa to enjoy the autumn leaves. Thank you for providing such a relaxing experience that made me forget the flow of time during my stay. The Onsen temperature was just right, and the smooth water left my skin feeling soft and moisturized. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, visually appealing, and gentle on the body—truly satisfying meals. I would love to visit again in a different season. One small disappointment was that the provided amenities were foreign-made, which I found unsuitable for my sensitive skin; I’m glad I brought my own products. It would also be great if a higher-grade hairdryer could be provided in the future.

    Thank you for the wonderful stay! I truly appreciated being warmly welcomed even as a solo traveler. The natural and genuine hospitality from the staff, including the manager, made my stay incredibly comfortable. I loved the room this time. Turning off the lights and gazing at the ceiling gave me an extraordinary feeling of floating in space—it was such a vast and mysterious experience. I’m definitely coming back! (Though I’d love to try other room types too!) As for the meals, perhaps because it’s autumn, they were even more delicious than last time (apologies for saying so). Every dish was outstanding and perfectly suited to my taste—full of seasonal mushrooms and nuts that truly captured autumn’s essence. I’d love to have the same menu again... The chef’s creativity, effort, and dedication are evident in every detail. Everything is crafted with care—absolutely amazing. I had a peaceful and fulfilling time here. With its convenient access, I’ll definitely visit again soon. Thank you so much! To everyone at this hotel: Karuizawa will get very cold from now on—please take care of yourselves. P.S.: While the bath was clean and pleasant, it would be perfect if it were a natural Onsen with free-flowing spring water—that's just my personal preference as someone who travels for Onsen experiences! For this reason alone, I rated 4 stars instead of 5—a bit selfish on my part!

    Heartwarming Accommodation

    We stayed as a family, and this was our first stay at the accommodation. The area around the hotel is filled with greenery, and the hotel itself blends seamlessly into nature. During breakfast, small birds and squirrels visited the terrace, making it feel like they were enjoying the meal with us—a heartwarming experience. Additionally, Ryugaeshi Falls nearby is about a 15-minute walk one way. With no other visitors around, it felt like we had this mystical space all to ourselves—a truly luxurious moment. On the first evening during dinner, I started feeling unwell and had to rest in our room without finishing my meal. Later on, I was kindly provided with rice porridge which warmed both my stomach and heart. The staff also offered kind words of concern for which I am deeply grateful. Since we currently live near a busy station where nights are lively, it was refreshing to spend some quiet time here after so long. The simple room without a TV naturally encouraged more conversations among our family members who live apart from each other. At night, we enjoyed board games and card games together for the first time in ages—it was such fun! This is definitely an accommodation we would love to visit again someday.     The most hospitable Hotel in your life

    We chose this Hotel to celebrate my partner's birthday after reading the reviews. It was truly an amazing experience. The staff worked with us multiple times beforehand to plan a surprise, and their attention to detail was incredible. I've never experienced such exceptional hospitality at any other Hotel before. Thank you for accommodating our requests with a smile! The staff member who assisted us was very polite and maintained just the right level of attentiveness, offering advice not only on the surprise but also on travel destinations for the next day, which was very helpful. The location is excellent, and despite visiting in August, our Room was comfortable even without air conditioning as they had prepared fans in advance for ventilation. We were also grateful for being lent short boots and bear bells for our trip to Ryugaeshi Falls. Although it rained during our stay and we couldn't participate in stargazing led by "The Little Prince," one of the staff kindly shared alternative stargazing spots and ideal seasons while lending us a charger, which warmed our hearts. The Facility is impeccably clean, making every part of our stay pleasant wherever we went within the premises. As expected from its reputation, the meals were outstanding! While dinner featured creative Japanese cuisine with Western or Chinese influences that we enjoyed thoroughly, breakfast stood out as pure Japanese-style cuisine that suited us even more. The grilled black cod served on the terrace was delicious; they also accommodated allergies perfectly (we even spotted squirrels along with wild birds!). For future guests: I highly recommend choosing Japanese-style breakfast! We hadn't placed much emphasis on trying out their Onsen initially but found it delightful—the water felt soft against the skin without any noticeable chlorine or dilution effects—leaving my skin smooth afterward! Even during this season's cooler mornings/evenings outdoors at their open-air bath felt refreshing; private baths came equipped with THANN amenities like cleansing products & shampoos matching those available at public baths—truly relaxing experiences overall! If I may suggest one thing: having KINUJO hairdryers (like those provided in public baths) available inside private baths or Rooms would be wonderful. Separate pajamas & indoor wear were provided alongside comfortable slippers; my partner recognized fluffy Imabari towels from Dialogue in The Dark events previously experienced—they added extra comfort throughout our stay! What surprised me most? Past reviews mentioned suggestions like changing lobby BGM based on time-of-day preferences or adding sparkling water options post-bath—and these improvements had already been implemented! It shows how much value they place upon guest feedback here. I also learned about periodic closure days prioritizing employee well-being—a commendable philosophy indeed! Looking forward to returning during wintertime when stargazing opportunities abound!

Engage in casual conversations with the hotel staff, relax in a room that feels like your own (but far more stylish), listen to birdsong and the sound of the wind, and let yourself be enveloped by the soothing touch of onsen water. Close your eyes and feel your daily stress melt away as if you were a butterfly floating through paradise. For those planning to stay here, we highly recommend opting for meals included—they are exquisite! While everyone will enjoy them, those who appreciate good drinks may find them particularly delightful. For me, this hotel feels less like a place I visit and more like a place I return to—a true home away from home.

    A Quiet Retreat for Adults

    I usually used the "flowing onsen filter" on IKYU.com to search for accommodations, so this hotel never appeared in my searches. I happened to find it while staying at a nearby ryokan and decided to stay here after learning it had great reviews. It was quiet, calm, and I thought the interior design and decorations were very tasteful—simply wonderful. The attention to detail and care were outstanding. Even the provided amenities were of excellent quality, showing a true sense of hospitality. The staff were friendly, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meals. It seemed like there weren’t many guests during my stay, so I had the bath all to myself. Although it was raining, I enjoyed my time surrounded by beautiful greenery. Each room is designed with a unique theme; finding one that suits your preference might be nice! I look forward to visiting again someday. Thank you very much!

    The interior is also lovely.

    The meals were thoughtfully prepared with great care and attention to nutritional balance, and they were absolutely delicious. Each dish was a delightful experience. The room's interior was also very charming. Although the Onsen public bath was small, its serene design featuring abundant use of wood and natural stones provided a truly relaxing atmosphere.     A wonderful Hotel.

    We felt completely at ease even with small children. We enjoyed a relaxing time in a private Onsen as a family, and the quality of the spring water was excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, leaving everyone in the family fully satisfied. What stood out the most was the heartfelt hospitality of the staff. Their thoughtful care touched us deeply and warmed our hearts many times during our stay. Thanks to their kindness, we had an incredibly comfortable and pleasant experience throughout our visit.     Enjoyed a comfortable stay with homely service.

    We stayed as a group of four, including a couple, their daughter, and grandchild. The warm and attentive service allowed us to relax comfortably. The meals were creative and delicious; however, the seasoning of the creative Japanese dinner felt slightly strong for us since it was served without rice. The room was comfortable, but it would be helpful if items like lotion, makeup remover, and face cream were provided in the room. The unlimited beer service and water were great additions; however, offering sparkling water or tea like accommodations in Hakone of a similar class would enhance the experience further. The library and audio services were excellent. It would also be delightful if drinks or ice cream could be offered after using the large public bath.

    Stayed with my family of three from June 22 to 23.

    The staff were very kind, and I was able to relax and enjoy my time. Luckily, the weather held up, so we joined the stargazing tour where "The Little Prince? Or Gentleman?" gave an entertaining explanation—it was so much fun! The meals were thoughtfully prepared with care in every detail! I immediately made a second Reservation!

    Completely satisfied!

    Thank you very much for your hospitality during our stay. It was our first time staying at this accommodation, and we stayed for a multiple night stay of three nights. Everything during our stay was extremely comfortable. Not only were the staff members very considerate, but the three dinners and breakfasts exceeded our expectations. The room was clean and easy to use. We also enjoyed the large public bath and open-air onsen at a leisurely pace. There were moments when we thought the water temperature could be slightly warmer, but it allowed us to enjoy the onsen for a longer time, so it wasn’t an issue overall. We made a reservation for autumn before leaving and are already looking forward to our next visit!

    I had a relaxing time.

    Stayed in the Malachite Room and enjoyed a wonderful day surrounded by fresh greenery! The food was creative and delicious. However, I would have preferred the beef to be grilled rather than served as tempura—it felt a bit heavy on the stomach. Also, since I traveled with a friend, having the toilet and sink in the same space felt slightly awkward.
