An adults-only accommodation you’ll look forward to returning to

On my first trip to Kusatsu Onsen, I stayed for two nights in the private open-air bath guest room “TAKASAGO.” Guest Room (TAKASAGO) The layout is wonderfully spacious, with the bedroom and tatami-style living area separated, creating a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Personally, I felt the room was a little dim due to limited natural light depending on its orientation, and I would have loved a larger sofa where you can really sink in rather than a low table—but overall it was an expansive, truly luxurious space. The tatami room with the low table faces a private garden and had a lovely sense of traditional charm. The maisonette-type rooms looked brighter and seemed to have more comfortable sofas as well, so I’d like to try one next time. Onsen Two different hot spring sources—Jizo Gensen and Bandai Kosen Gensen—are supplied here, making for an indulgent bathing experience. In addition to enjoying high-quality spring water anytime in the in-room open-air bath, the three private reservable baths each had their own distinct character and conveyed refined Japanese aesthetics. I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in Onsen throughout my stay. In particular, I loved “AWASE,” where three tubs are lined up from low to high temperature so you can experience a traditional bathing method—I went back again and again. Breakfast As dinner service was suspended during my stay, breakfast was the only meal offered—but its quality was outstanding, easily on par with dinner. I often stay at cuisine-focused Ryokan, and this was among the best I’ve experienced: creative composition of dishes, cooking that brought out the best of each ingredient, and thoughtful selection of tableware that elevated every course. Hospitality & Service The staff’s attentiveness and perfectly balanced approach—present when needed but never intrusive—left a strong impression and made my stay very comfortable. While there are a couple of minor preferences regarding the guest room setup, overall I was extremely satisfied with every aspect: Onsen, food quality (breakfast), and hospitality. I would absolutely love to return when visiting Kusatsu again.

    A Wonderful Auberge

This Accommodation in Kusatsu, one of Japan’s premier Onsen destinations, offered such outstanding cuisine that it made us want to visit for the food rather than the Onsen. One beautifully crafted dish after another was served on a lovely white lacquered table. Everything was delicious and a delight for both the eyes and the palate. Breakfast was equally satisfying, and you could really feel the care and effort put into it from early morning. Of course, the Onsen was also excellent, with a location right in front of Jizo Onsen. The three private baths with free-flowing hot spring water were not by Reservation; instead, we checked availability on a tablet and entered when open, which let us enjoy all three without any stress. The Room was spacious, and the staff’s attentive yet unobtrusive service made everything very comfortable. After returning home, I’ve been recommending it to my friends as a must-visit.

It was a wonderful Accommodation, just as I saw on the TV show.

I wanted to stay at the Accommodation that was featured on a show with Matsuko Deluxe, so I made a Reservation through IKYU. I stayed in the “TAKASAGO” Room with an open-air bath. Just like I saw on YouTube, the property was very clean, and even the welcome cocktail was made with a shaker—such a lovely touch. The Room was spacious and spotless, making it easy to relax. The lighting could be adjusted, but it felt a bit dim for my taste. The meals were outstanding—everything made with seasonal ingredients was simply delicious. I also ordered a tasting set of local craft beer and sake, and because the food was so good, I ended up drinking too much and wasn’t as polite as I should have been when the head chef came to greet us… The Onsen was wonderful as well; both the in-room open-air bath and the private baths AWASE and HIKARI each had their own unique atmosphere. It’s very popular and often fully booked, but next time I visit Kusatsu, I’d definitely like to make another Reservation!

    Wonderful

The Facility is new and excellent, and the Onsen is wonderful, with private Onsen baths available. Since the Kusatsu Onsen water is hot, few guests stay in the private baths for long, so you can enjoy them without stress. Above all, the meals are outstandingly delicious. This Accommodation is of a very high standard, and I would definitely like to return.

The meals were as good as their reputation.

I made a Reservation after reading the reviews. The meals were as good as their reputation. I heard the ingredients are high quality, and the tableware and presentation were also wonderful—you could really feel the care that went into everything. There were several Onsen baths, and I was able to relax and enjoy them at my own pace. I had trouble because I couldn’t figure out how to operate the Room lighting. It was a bit too stylish, and this was the only part that wasn’t very user-friendly. The staff service was good, but it did feel somewhat by-the-book. I think guests might relax more if it were a little more casual, though that depends on the guest. This is an Accommodation I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy great food.

    We visited as a fami...

We visited as a family trip. All three private baths were spacious and clean, and we had a very relaxing time. Above all, the meals were outstanding—making the most of high-quality ingredients—and we were completely satisfied with both the presentation and the taste. Our first visit to Kusatsu Onsen became a wonderful memory.

    Accommodation with excellent dining

We stayed at Kyo during Golden Week as a family to visit Kusatsu Onsen. The location was excellent for enjoying Kusatsu Onsen—right in front of the Jizo Onsen footbath and face bath in Ura-Kusatsu, and very close to Yubatake. The Accommodation’s Onsen were also wonderful, and we were able to use all three baths without stress, as they never became fully booked by Reservation. Above all, the meals were outstanding; both dinner and breakfast were delicious, beautifully presented, and our whole family had a wonderful time. All the staff were courteous and attentive, making our stay truly enjoyable.

Kei has changed for the worse.

Kei has changed. The staff service is terrible. They may not understand true hospitality. At the very least, they should use polite language. In the dining area, staff were talking for a long time with guests they seemed to favor, and it was noisy—I felt like I was in a banquet hall. This is not the pleasant, mature Kei it used to be. I hope things improve, but it seems unlikely. I don’t think these staff members know what Kei was like before. In addition to the poor service, there were Facility issues: in my Room, I could hear footsteps from above and couldn’t relax. It was a very disappointing stay. I hope many things will be improved.

Unlimited access to Jizo Hot Spring for a luxurious stay

We stayed in a Room with a private open-air bath fed by the Jizo hot spring source. Including the reservable private open-air bath, we soaked so often it was almost ridiculous! The temperature, benefits, and silky feel of the water were all outstanding. The design lets you feel the breeze outside, so we could enjoy Kusatsu’s still-chilly late-March air while soaking in a hot bath—an Onsen experience at its best. The meals were truly delicious, just as you’d expect from an auberge specializing in Japanese cuisine. Every dish delighted both the eyes and the palate, and we enjoyed plenty of wonderful local specialties from Gunma. We left happily stuffed. From the menu lineup as well, it felt like this place is geared more toward a calm, mature Japanese clientele than overseas guests. A luxurious Accommodation I’d love to return to for a special treat.

It was the perfect Accommodation to reward yourself after a year of hard work.

We stayed for one night and two days. Every Onsen was relaxing, and all the staff provided courteous service, so we had a very comfortable stay. The Room was spacious and clean, and the food was delicious. They also handled my allergies properly, so I could enjoy the meals with peace of mind. It was the perfect Accommodation as a reward to myself for a year of hard work. One thing I noticed: during check-in, we were told that when the private bath is locked, it would show on the tablet in the Room that it is in use. However, even when only the two baths on the first floor were locked, the tablet still showed “Available.” Since overall satisfaction with this Accommodation was extremely high, this small detail stood out. Both the Onsen and the food were among the best of any Ryokan I have visited. I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.

The location, dinner, and hot spring water quality were all excellent.

We stayed one night in Room B01. The location, dinner quality, and hot spring water were excellent. The Room is spacious, but the extra space could be presented better. You may want to take cues from properties in a similar price range such as Kamenoi, Muryoto, Chikurintei, Hansuiro, and Tawaraya. For the private bath, towels should be provided inside, and drinking water is also essential. Late at night we requested a plate and fork to eat cake; unlike during the day, a staff member who did not appear clean brought them on a dirty tray. Staffing may be challenging, but with only seven rooms, I would like the owner to pay closer attention to these details. We were also disappointed that the lounge closed early before checkout. Luxury Ryokan in this price range typically allow guests to relax with coffee in the lounge right up until checkout. The lingering impression at departure influences whether guests make their next Reservation. Thank you for the birthday plate.

It was a perfectly attentive experience in every way—both in time and space.

We stayed here for the first night of our 2-night, 3-day trip. It was our first visit to Kusatsu Onsen as a couple. This Review comes from a typical travel enthusiast who has stayed at Accommodations in a similar price range and of a similar size. ◯Overall The Facility, amenities, service, and meals were all consistently high quality. It was a comfortable place where we could truly relax. ○Facility & Amenities - Excellent design throughout—from the entrance to the lobby/lounge, Room, dining area, and private baths. - Amenities are from Gunma-based brand OSAJI; the woody scent is very soothing. - Convenient in-Room tablet lets you check availability for the private baths. ○Meals - Using Gunma specialties was a nice touch, but even more impressive was the delicate seasoning that brings out the natural flavors. You can really feel the chef’s taste and attention to detail. - With fewer guests than large-scale Accommodations, dishes were served at just the right timing for each person. - Explanations of each dish were brief yet sufficient; drink recommendations were also easy to understand. - Staff were attentive without interrupting or disturbing the dining atmosphere. ○Service - We appreciated how staff always considered our situation and offered thoughtful suggestions at appropriate times. - Casual conversation helped us feel at ease and comfortable throughout our stay. - Grooming and manners were consistently polished. As an aside: on the day of our stay I was recovering from gastroenteritis and hadn’t regained my appetite, so I couldn’t finish the dinner course (I also asked my wife for input on this part). Partway through I explained this to staff—though I felt very sorry—and asked if I could decline the remaining dishes. The chef and other staff kindly came by to check on me. Even though it was entirely my fault for causing trouble, their consideration meant a lot. They also made rice into onigiri for me and brought it to our Room with pickles. This is admittedly a subjective Review, but when we visit Kusatsu Onsen again, we will definitely choose this Accommodation. When talking about trips with my wife or friends, there are certain places that truly stand out—and this is absolutely one I would recommend to others. Thank you very much.

This was my third stay, and I was very satisfied—I’ll definitely be back.

This is my third stay within the past year. For my first trip I stayed at a different Accommodation in Kusatsu, and for the second I stayed in Ikaho Onsen, but for this third trip I chose to stay only here. I am extremely satisfied in every aspect—Room, meals, Onsen, and staff. This time I stayed in a Room with a private Jizo hot-spring bath. Personally, Jizo is my favorite among the Kusatsu hot-spring sources, which is why I make a Reservation for this Room. In addition to that, there are two private baths with Jizo source water and one private bath with Bandai-kō source water—an excellent selection. Because there are only a few Rooms, you can always find an opportunity to bathe at some point during your stay. The tablet in the Room also makes it easy to check whether the private baths are available. They were all wonderful—I used each of them twice. The meals are healthy, delicious, and beautifully presented—never boring. You can really tell how much care goes into selecting the ingredients; the dining alone is reason enough to stay here. Part of me hesitated to write this Review because I would hate for it to become so popular that making a Reservation gets difficult, but I was so satisfied that I wanted to leave this comment.

    Wonderful

We stayed here to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. They kindly helped us plan the cake, and on the day we were served a wonderful birthday cake—we were very satisfied. The meals were also delicious. The Onsen was very relaxing, and the private bath had a great atmosphere. All of the staff were friendly, making it an amazing trip. We would love to stay again.

Dining that moves you—yet that’s not all!

The meals were beautifully presented, highly creative, and refreshingly innovative Japanese cuisine. I was truly impressed by the variety of textures, seasonings, and the excellent cooking of each ingredient. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the rolled sukiyaki. The yellowtail mixed rice was served as onigiri, which delighted me all over again. Thank you as well for the birthday dessert decoration for my wife. It might have been even better if we had a window-side seat with a snowy view... The three private baths were also wonderful spaces where we could really appreciate the qualities of Kusatsu’s two hot spring sources, and the Kusatsu “awase-yu” experience was a lot of fun. Of course, the Room was extremely comfortable. If there hadn’t been snow on the ground, I would have loved to enjoy a beer on the terrace. It was an experience and level of satisfaction well worth the price, so I can confidently recommend this as one of Kusatsu’s top choices.

The hospitality and cuisine were excellent.

We stayed as two families, a total of six people. It was a wonderful accommodation, especially the hospitality and cuisine were outstanding. I wanted to thank the head chef for the delicious food, and I was glad to have the chance to speak with them when they came to greet us at the end. This might be the best accommodation we've ever stayed at! We stayed in a room with an open-air bath, but during midwinter, it can be extremely cold in the open-air bath.

    Other than the Room

This was my second stay. The meals were delicious, and the bath usage could be checked via the room's tablet, making it relatively easy to access. The accommodation is close to Yubatake and has a great location. However, the maisonette type I chose this time had very steep stairs, and moving between the living room with the TV and refrigerator and the bedroom required going up and down stairs, which was quite challenging. There were many windows providing good brightness, but leaving the roller blinds open made everything visible from outside on roads or nearby areas, so they needed to be kept closed—making me feel I chose the wrong room type. As for amenities, there were plenty available in both the room and bathroom, so you don’t need to bring anything with you.

    It was excellent!

The welcome drink was delightful! Although our room did not have an open-air bath, the private bath was conveniently located near the room, allowing us to enjoy it whenever we wanted. We were very satisfied. We especially loved the private bath with three tubs offering different temperatures. The meals were generous in portion and delicious, and we appreciated the thoughtful gesture of turning leftover rice into rice balls for us. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again! P.S. The library's collection also brought us joy.
