The No. 1 Accommodation You'll Want to Return To

The meals were delicious. Dinner was fun and exciting. The female chef was amazing! Everything was comfortable, and I was able to relax at a leisurely pace. (The bed was a little narrow...) I think I understand why it’s so hard to get a Reservation. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

An Accommodation with stunning views and excellent hospitality and baths, but with room for improvement

As a popular Accommodation that’s hard to book, I’d long wanted to stay here at least once. The view from the reception area, the scenery and bath from the Room, the food, and the service were all excellent. We stayed in a maisonette-type Room. The layout wasn’t bad, but its overall age was hard to hide. There were three of us, but the extra mattress was thin, and the sofa’s urethane foam has worn out— it gets noticeably loud the moment you sit down—so it should be replaced soon. While the location, food, and hospitality are great, compared with newer luxury Ryokan it felt like investment in Facility upgrades is lacking. Otherwise, it comes across as a luxury Ryokan resting on its views and baths alone.

    Satisfied with my first吟遊 experience

We were finally able to secure a Reservation and stay here. The Room was well maintained and very clean. The breathtaking view from the open windows and the outdoor bath were wonderful. The summer scenery from the lobby and the furnishings reminded me of Ubud. Overall, it was exactly what we expected, but one thing stood out: since we used the outdoor bath multiple times, it was disappointing that there were only two bath towels in the Room. Having one more set would have allowed us to rotate them while drying them on the towel warmer. On our way out, we purchased the all-in-one gel provided in the Room because we liked it so much.

An Accommodation with great views and excellent hot water.

Known as one of Japan’s hardest Accommodations to book, I’d been curious about it for a long time, but the water-filled area in the first-floor spa and bar was cloudy and extremely unhygienic. It also seemed like it could attract mosquitoes. The Room also felt noticeably dated, with stains here and there on the sofa bed that made it seem like the sheets hadn’t been changed. It smelled unpleasant as well. The meals were disappointing too. The breakfast rice was microwaved. Overall, it was a letdown. I won’t be returning, and I can’t recommend this Accommodation.

    My Daughter’s Birthday

This time, our family stayed to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. We stayed in the Room called “Nanaya.” The in-room bath was the best of any Room we’ve stayed in so far! We chose teppanyaki for dinner. One of the reasons we choose this Accommodation is the wonderful hospitality of the Ryokan staff. They took great care of us again this time. I’ll avoid using names, but thanks to how sincerely she looked after us, we truly felt our trip was enjoyable from the bottom of our hearts. We’re also very grateful to the two staff members at the bar for their kindness. However, the only disappointment this time was breakfast. Because our group was large, we were seated in a separate room, but everything had already been set out—the yudofu had dried out, and even the tea was lukewarm. Also, we couldn’t adjust the room air conditioning and it was cold. If these issues can be improved next time, we would definitely love to stay again.

I’m a returning guest—I came again this month to relax and unwind.

This time, we stayed in the first-floor Western-style room “Fuko.” We are always impressed by the chef’s creative cuisine. The presentation and flavors are wonderful—truly moving. All of the staff were very soothing, and we felt completely refreshed. Thank you very much. We will come again. From the terrace, you can see the trolley at the neighboring Accommodation.

We stayed in the Hoshiyado Maisonette type. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay. The views, the food, and the atmosphere throughout the Accommodation exceeded our expectations, and we had a truly memorable time. On the other hand, because we hope this will become an even better Accommodation in the future, we would like to share a few points we noticed. We were slightly concerned to find some cobwebs during room cleaning, but what left an even stronger impression was the men’s restroom on the 4th floor. At check-in, a cleaning cloth had been left near the bidet control panel, and when we used it again after dinner, it was still there in the same place. Precisely because this is an Accommodation in this price range, we felt that such small details can affect one’s overall impression of the entire property. The views and cuisine were truly outstanding; that is why we feel that if service and cleanliness improve further, it will become an Accommodation where guests will think, “We definitely want to stay again.” We share this feedback with sincere support.

    Second time.

This was my second stay, the first in several years. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. First, the Room had not been cleaned, and both the toilet and table were dirty. The area under the in-room bath was slippery, and I don’t think it had been cleaned. The meals no longer had their previous elegance and felt like an average level for a high-end Accommodation. The air conditioner also smelled moldy and did not seem to have been cleaned. Even with a two-night stay, there was only one bath towel provided, and drinks were ordered via QR code. I understand efforts to reduce costs, but at this point it didn’t feel necessary to choose Ginyu specifically. There are more overseas staff now, and the lack of greetings is not acceptable at this price range. The Room is spacious, the in-room bath is large, and the view is great. Some staff members were pleasant as well. There are many good Accommodations in Gora and Sengokuhara, but fewer below Miyanoshita—so I truly hope you will improve. If things are improved, I would like to visit again.

Everyone in the family said it was very relaxing!!!

Thank you again for taking care of us on our family trip. You helped us celebrate my parents’ birthdays as a surprise, and they were truly delighted. It became a wonderful memory. Thank you to all the staff. We also really appreciated your accommodation of allergy-related dietary needs. Each dish was beautifully presented, and we couldn’t help but admire how delicious everything looked. The dobin-mushi was especially outstanding—I’d love to have it again. In our favorite Room, which feels so calm and relaxing, we were able to enjoy the bath many times and felt completely refreshed. The in-Room bath is spacious and very comfortable—one of our absolute favorites—but the view from the open-air bath in the large public bath is breathtaking as well! Thank you again for everything.

I was able to make a Reservation at this popular Hotel by catching a cancellation. I was first overwhelmed by the beautiful view from the lobby. The food was also excellent. The seasonal appetizers and the dobin-mushi were especially memorable. The open-air bath in the Room had a great view, and I could relax comfortably. I was surprised by a birthday celebration arranged as a special surprise. The Japanese staff assigned to our Room, the international staff who spoke Japanese well, and the spa team—everyone’s hospitality was outstanding, and it truly felt like a wonderful Accommodation. I would love to visit again in another season.

    I was truly impressed.

We stayed here to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The hospitality was outstanding. Everything we ate was delicious—the teppanyaki dinner, breakfast, and even the ramen from room service. They also arranged a surprise for his birthday, which truly moved us and became a wonderful memory. Thank you for giving us such an elegant day.

    Japan’s hardest Accommodation to book?

Thank you for hosting us for a 1-night, 2-day stay. I knew this was an Accommodation that is said to be the hardest to get a Reservation for in Japan, but by chance there was availability and we decided to visit. The moment I entered the lobby, a musty smell hit me. Guidance to our Room was extremely slow—we were kept waiting for over 20 minutes. On the way to the Room, the corridor was so dark that it was almost impossible to see. While age-related deterioration of the Facility is unavoidable, it felt like proper upkeep has not been done. I think the lighting issue could be resolved fairly easily. Also, at the front desk, I could clearly hear employees chatting loudly as if they were friends talking among themselves. There were no issues with the bath in the Room, and since I smoke, I appreciated being able to smoke on the terrace. We chose teppanyaki for dinner, and as far as teppanyaki goes, I didn’t feel there were any particular problems. Breakfast was served in the Room; it filled me up, but I felt the selection of side dishes was somewhat lacking. Lastly, while aging is unavoidable, isn’t there something that can be done about the musty odor that is common in older Accommodations? Overall, it seems maintenance is not thorough enough. To be frank, I would not stay again.

    Disappointing Accommodation

I could tell the staff were doing their best, but the overall standard felt low. There was no sense of cleanliness at all; the cleaning was inadequate, and the furniture was very old and patched up with duct tape. The food was also terrible. I was disappointed. The moment I entered the Room, there was an unpleasant smell—probably due to how old it is. It was an awful experience.

I’m a returning guest—so glad I was able to make a Reservation at Kazemachi. A soothing Onsen!

I stayed again in April, May, and June. I always look forward to the meals—your creative cuisine is truly impressive. The tableware is stylish every time and wonderful as well. As always, your hospitality and the Onsen are so relaxing. This time I finally got to stay in the Room I had been hoping for, Keifu (4th-floor Room), and it was excellent. The 1st-floor Room (Tsuki) was also great, but this one is more spacious, with a fantastic view of the mountains. There are two toilets as well. The open-air bath was nice—though it would have been even better if it had a jacuzzi like the one on the 1st floor. It’s also close to the large public bath, so I went in many times. Every time I plan to eat ramen this visit, but after enjoying dinner I’m too full—and once again I couldn’t eat it this time either. What a shame. Next time I stay here, for sure...

As always, the hospitality is outstanding.

I found an available room on IKYU and made a Reservation right away. It was the same as last time: a first-floor Moon-type room. The open-air jacuzzi bath was incredibly relaxing. The meals were also delicious, and I’m always impressed by the beautifully crafted presentation of each dish every time. It’s truly soothing, and I’d love to stay again.

    Retirement Celebration Surprise

We stayed here as a retirement celebration, just the two of us. Even while waiting to check in, the breathtaking view was so wonderful that we were truly overwhelmed. They also surprised us with a retirement celebration, and we were genuinely touched by their thoughtfulness. The Onsen and the meals were excellent, and above all, all of the staff provided kind and warm hospitality, so this has become one of the Accommodations we would love to stay at again. Thank you very much.

We had a very relaxing stay.

As a repeat guest, I always feel happy when I can secure a Reservation—it means the timing worked out again this year. With an early check-in and being able to book the spa at my preferred time, I was able to relax for a long, unhurried stay and had a truly restful time. As always, the Onsen left my skin silky smooth, and the spectacular views were very soothing. That said, there were a couple of things that concerned me this time. First, the steak at dinner was quite cool, and even the inside was cold. Also, when we ordered in-room dining, we were told twice that items were sold out; if so, I would prefer those items not be available to order—especially since our young child was looking forward to them. Even so, compared with other luxury Ryokan, it offers excellent value for money, and once again I felt a kind of healing relaxation you can’t experience elsewhere. I would love to visit again.

I was really looking forward to it, but…

This Accommodation had many disappointing aspects. First, even though it wasn’t particularly busy, there was an unexplained wait at check-in. We were kept waiting so long that we had to ask them to hurry. The Room felt somewhat dated, and the lack of thorough cleaning made it feel even older. The in-room amenities felt cheap: the washing-area chair was a flimsy plastic one, and the Room service menu left in the Room was grimy—like something you’d see at a karaoke box. Since one drink was included, I ordered their “original” draft beer, but it tasted thin and watery, as if it contained less malt than typical beer. The open-air bath in the Room and the large public bath were good, but my biggest complaint was dinner. From appetizers to the final course, nothing felt carefully prepared. This was not the quantity or quality you would expect from an Accommodation costing around 100,000 yen per night. Also, perhaps because our server was new, they seemed awkward throughout and their explanations of the dishes were unclear. Other guests have pointed out similar issues in their Reviews as well, so it is very disappointing that management does not seem to be using negative Reviews to improve. Perhaps I expected too much from what is said to be “the hardest Accommodation in Japan to get a Reservation.” Still, for such a popular place, I never ran into anyone in the large public bath despite going multiple times—perhaps because there were many foreign guests. My impression was that there were few Japanese guests. The view from the lobby was wonderful exactly as shown in magazines. That’s all it had going for it. I will not return.

    Excellent service and outstanding food.

I was worried about staying at a Japanese Ryokan again after a long time. My wife is recovering from rehabilitation after a cerebral hemorrhage and cannot walk well, so I was concerned about causing trouble. We are truly grateful for your kind support. The meals were authentic kaiseki—delicious and beautifully presented—and the lush green scenery outside the window added an extra sense of luxury. We were very lucky to finally secure a Reservation. After staying here once, it’s easy to understand why it’s famous for being so hard to book—the service, cuisine, and surrounding scenery are all outstanding. Please continue to feature this Accommodation on IKYU.

The quality was exactly as described in the reviews.

Thank you for taking care of us during our family trip over Golden Week. If I had to point out a couple of minor things: - After check-in at the terrace seats with the amazing view, we were then asked to move to the lobby with the aquarium for an explanation of the Facility and a welcome drink. It felt a little unusual; it might be nicer to receive the explanation and welcome drink right there on the terrace. - The in-room complimentary drinks were limited to tea and a post-bath cider, which felt a bit sparse. It would be great to have at least some coffee options. We appreciated receiving a one-drink voucher usable at the in-house bar at check-in, but having more easy-to-enjoy drinks available in the room would be even better. Other than that, we were very satisfied with the Facility, service, and meals. Heavy rain started late at night, but even that added to the atmosphere—the view and ambiance from our terrace with an open-air bath became a wonderful memory. Thank you very much.

    - Although the windows were kept closed, my husband was bitten by a huge centipede in the guest room. He said the bite caused intense pain. If you stay on the first floor, you should be especially cautious about pests getting in. - There were multiple damaged areas in the in-room Facility, which concerned me (straw on the wall crumbling, the wooden frame of the mirror left cracked, etc.). I don’t mind that this long-established property is aging, but lack of maintenance is a separate issue. - Among all the Ryokan we have stayed at so far, this had by far the worst attendant service, which was very disappointing. I could tolerate someone who can only follow a manual, but they lacked basic judgment and continued to behave rudely throughout our stay, making it unpleasant from start to finish. Were they a new employee? Honestly, service at nearby set-meal restaurants or hamburger chains is far better. - At meals they provide condiments and lemon slices, etc., but there is no explanation of what goes with what, so we didn’t know how to use them. The timing of when condiments were brought out also felt inconsistent—we kept wondering “Is this supposed to go on this???” Perhaps some attendants explain properly depending on who you get.

    Your First Bard Experience

It’s easy to see why it’s so hard to get a Reservation. Many guests are regulars who stay several times a year, and some have been coming for around 20 years. Recently, it also felt like there were many international guests. We saw lots of older couples than us. This is an old, upscale Ryokan. The views and the open-air bath in the large public bath are outstanding—you’ll truly feel glad you came. That said, many things feel dated. When we entered the Room, we noticed an unpleasant smell—like a neighborhood sushi shop with fish displayed in a glass case at the counter. Since meals are served in the Room, the odor may linger. The food is delicious, and the timing of each dish served by the attendant was excellent. The open-air bath in the Room also shows its age. I think the plumbing areas should be renovated. Perhaps it feels Balinese because looking out at the lush mountains brings Ubud to mind. We’re glad we were able to visit Ginyu. Thank you very much.

    Your First Teppanyaki Experience

I have stayed at Hakone Ginyu more than 10 times, but this was my first time making a Reservation through IKYU. I learned during my visit last autumn that they had added teppanyaki, and I wanted to try it next time—then a Room became available on the perfect date, so I was able to book it. I have visited many places in Hakone and Atami, but Ginyu is still the best. The view from the Room, the cuisine, and the hospitality are all outstanding. Each time I visit, it’s so hard to secure a stay that I usually make a Reservation for the following year before leaving—and if I can get in through IKYU when there’s a cancellation opening, that’s truly lucky. The teppanyaki dining room was even more refined than I expected. The portion of meat was generous as well, and I was completely satisfied. We will be back again—thank you in advance for your continued hospitality.

This was our third surprise celebration (my wife’s birthday, my birthday, and our wedding anniversary). Thank you for the wonderful hospitality. We always look forward to the meals—every time, we’re truly impressed not only by the dishes and cuisine, but by the entire experience. The Onsen was outstanding: the open-air bath in our Room and the large public bath were both excellent. The magnificent mountain views of Hakone let us feel the beauty of every season.

    Wonderful

It was my first stay in 15 years, and the service was truly first-class. Above all, I felt comforted by the hostess’s casual conversation. The Onsen was wonderful, and my body stayed warm for a long time afterward. The food was also genuinely delicious—these two days were truly special. If I can make a Reservation, I would love to visit again.

    First stay in three years

We visited to celebrate both of our birthdays. It was our first time back at Ginyu in a while, and we chose teppanyaki for dinner. The teppanyaki dining area was spacious, and it felt so refreshing to discover a place like this at Ginyu. We were also truly moved by the birthday surprise. Thinking of how hard the staff worked to prepare it made us feel incredibly happy. Thank you so much for the gift as well. We love Ginyu and will definitely be back!

I visited again for the first time in 15 years.

I revisited Ginyu, once famous 15 years ago as one of Japan’s hardest Accommodations to book. This time, I happened to find an available room on IKYU a week in advance and was able to Reserve right away. The breathtaking view is still as wonderful as ever—open and refreshing. I was also pleased with the high quality of the amenities, such as the shampoo and skincare products. Most notably, the meals were truly delicious. When I visited 15 years ago, my impression was that the food was just average, and above all, the service pace was slow—the long gaps between dishes left a negative impression. This time, however, everything was served at perfect timing: hot dishes were enjoyed hot, and cold dishes cold. I could tell they use excellent ingredients. In particular, the tuna sashimi and sea urchin were high quality and delicious. The miso soup was also outstanding with a rich dashi flavor. I was very satisfied with both the beautiful scenery and the wonderful meals. I’d love to visit again when the greenery is lush—if there’s availability.

    This is the best accommodation!

This was my third visit. This time, we had dinner at the teppanyaki restaurant. The chef’s clear explanations and perfect cooking were truly enjoyable. The Room attendant who always takes care of us, and the bar staff as well, were familiar faces and created a relaxing atmosphere where we could feel at ease. The Room was also very comfortable. We also had soba for lunch on the day we arrived—and it’s actually highly recommended! It’s the perfect portion when you’re planning to enjoy a big dinner, and it was delicious. We’re looking forward to visiting again.

My expectations may have been too high.

Because it was known as an Accommodation that’s hard to get a Reservation for, I made a Reservation. I think my expectations were simply too high. The Onsen was wonderful—I could have stayed in both the large public bath and the indoor bath forever. The property was very quiet, with only about 20 rooms, so I rarely ran into other guests and was able to relax. However, there were a few service issues: the yukata size didn’t fit (it was changed immediately after I contacted them, but at other luxury Accommodations they usually notice at check-in and offer a different size), dinner took quite a while to be served, and many services required additional fees.

    The bath is amazing.

This was my first stay at Hakone Ginyu. The baths are quite small, but they were wonderful. Soaking slowly in the hot water helped wash away the fatigue of traveling. And all the staff members’ smiles were truly pleasant. I filled out the guest questionnaire that was in the Room and handed it to a staff member at check-out; the young proprietress reviewed it right away and said they would improve any requested points, so I left feeling very satisfied. I would like to stay again. One thing I forgot to write in the questionnaire: for teppanyaki, I would be happy if there were even a small serving of salad. Teppanyaki is served face-to-face with the chef, and while an ideal level of interaction is hard to strike, I’d appreciate a bit more space—if spoken to too much, it’s difficult to enjoy conversation with my companion. Also, due to unexpectedly heavy snow, my suitcase got soaked; it would be perfect if there were thoughtful help such as wiping it down.
