With a great view from the open kitchen counter, it was enjoyable to watch the plating process from a distance. The overhead lighting made the plates look beautifully radiant. There was also a good selection of drinks, and the pairing felt special and added to the experience.

Perfect for a relaxing stay-in getaway.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the train station, it’s perfect for a spontaneous solo trip. There were all kinds of books, and I was excited to grab whatever caught my eye and bring them back to my Room. A Multiple Night Stay would be even better so you can read more. The large public bath was excellent. Maybe because everyone comes for the books, I had it all to myself. The open-air bath at the large public bath was especially great. The in-room bath is an Onsen, but it is not free-flowing. Also, the labels on the shampoo and other bottles in the large public bath have worn off—better to label them clearly even if it looks less stylish. Isn’t the lighting in the Room a bit dim…? Especially the bedside light. The wall-mounted backrest cushion looks nice, but I wish I could adjust it to my preferred height. All-you-can-eat Häagen-Dazs and unlimited juice. The morning milk was delicious. Dinner was fun with a live feel, but the production felt a bit over-the-top, so I don’t think I could invite my parents. I’d like to drop by again on a whim.

Indulge in a luxurious time with books and Onsen

This was my third stay, and once again I had a truly wonderful time. This time, I chose a Green View Room for the first time. The greenery outside was reflected in the large windows, making it feel as if nature had flowed right into the Room—an incredibly relaxing space. At Hakone Honbako, spending time by soaking in the Onsen, reading a book, and then returning to the Onsen again is pure luxury. The cloudy water in the large public bath had a soothing sulfur scent, and in the open-air bath I could take my time enjoying the Onsen while listening to insects chirping. The complimentary drinks inside the Accommodation were also a delight: draft beer, plus a variety of snacks like chocolate and nuts. The Häagen-Dazs after bathing and all of the sparkling drinks were delicious as well. One of my favorite parts is the mini kitchen tour before dinner. It was fascinating to see photos from when this place used to be Nippan’s retreat facility before becoming Hakone Honbako—I enjoyed learning about the Accommodation’s history. What especially stayed with me was hearing that they intentionally do not categorize the books by genre. They want guests to enjoy unexpected encounters with books they wouldn’t normally pick up—and I really felt that this is exactly the kind of place where you can discover books you wouldn’t find elsewhere. Dinner was outstanding across every dish—simple at first glance, yet full of depth. In particular, they use fish from Sasue Maeda Fish Shop, and every fish dish was exceptional. I would absolutely recommend visiting just for the food as well. Soak in an Onsen and read; rest for a bit and open another book; when you get tired, head back to the Onsen. Without doing anything special—just reading as much as you like and enjoying the Onsen—you can have such an indulgent experience. This stay reminded me of that once again. Even after three visits, what makes Hakone Honbako so appealing is that each time brings new books and new ways to spend your day. When I feel like taking it slow with a good book again, I’d love to return.

    A must-stay for book lovers.

Three friends and I stayed for one night. From the moment we stepped inside, we were welcomed by a wonderful space surrounded by countless books. I love reading, so it was a joy just to wander around and see books displayed throughout the property, and it felt like a luxury to have time to pick up any book that caught my eye and read at leisure. The Room had a calm atmosphere and was very comfortable. Between soaking in the Onsen, reading, and chatting with friends, we were able to relax and truly unwind away from everyday life. The meals were carefully prepared dish by dish, and it left an impression that we could enjoy not only the flavors but also the presentation. All of the staff were courteous as well, which made our stay very pleasant. This is an Accommodation I would especially recommend to anyone who loves books. It was a trip with friends, but being able to each choose our own books and spend time however we liked felt like something uniquely special about Hakone Honbako. We would love to visit again. Thank you for such a wonderful time!

It was a luxurious stay surrounded by my favorite books.

Books are everywhere, making it a luxurious space where simply admiring them alongside the interior is a pleasure, and you can easily pick up and read genres you wouldn’t normally choose. The meals were outstanding in concept, presentation, and taste, and the sake selected for us paired perfectly with the food. By chance, there were a few minor issues—such as the Onsen water temperature being low in some areas, and (perhaps to reduce plastic waste) the toothbrush having both a wooden handle and head that made it hard to use—but overall we were very satisfied with our stay. Next time, we’d like to book a Multiple Night Stay and enjoy it more slowly.

Clear, easy-to-understand signage and the Accommodation name display are required.

There are several signboards, but it’s unclear whether to go straight or turn left. If the route is to go straight and then turn left, please make the signage clearly indicate that. Also, the Accommodation name is not displayed anywhere, so it’s impossible to tell whether it’s a private apartment building or an Accommodation. If it’s an apartment building, you can’t just enter without permission. The website also shows no exterior photos at all, so there’s no way to identify it. Not being able to reach the Accommodation alone ruined the travel mood (-100 points). The atmosphere during the stay, the hot water, and the meals are good. The staff service also has just the right level of distance.

    Hakone Daimonji-yaki Bonfire and Fireworks

I stayed in August. From Hakone-Yumoto, I transferred between the mountain railway and cable car to reach Naka-Gora. The Hotel is quiet overall, with a calm, relaxing atmosphere. Bookshelves are set up throughout the Accommodation, and there’s also a coffee machine and snacks. I even saw some guests reading for hours on their own. There are also complimentary drinks such as draft beer during limited hours. The Room we stayed in was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The meals were outstanding—creative dishes unlike anything I’ve had elsewhere! The fish in particular was incredibly delicious. Truly moving. It rained that day, but we were able to watch Hakone’s Daimonji-yaki bonfire and the fireworks from the balcony in front of the restaurant (the staff explained Daimonji-yaki beforehand, which made it even more exciting). Even if your Room doesn’t have a fireworks view, you can still enjoy it 충분に. Personally, I was thrilled to find what felt like a hidden treat: Häagen-Dazs in the relaxation area near the bath! I think this is a rare Accommodation where adults can feel genuinely excited—not just for reading or just for the Onsen. It became a special summer memory for me.

    The bath was amazing.

I’d been curious for a while about this Accommodation with the concept of unlimited reading. As soon as you step inside, you’re greeted by wall-to-wall bookshelves—it was a wonderful sight. That was great, but what I especially loved this time was the Onsen. Both the large public bath and the in-Room bath were truly excellent. Since the water quality is different, I enjoyed both. (The corridor leading down to the large public bath had a slight horror-movie vibe, which was fun in its own way.) As for meals, breakfast was particularly good. The dinner course themed around experiencing the Tokaido was also lovely. I felt the pairing course could have benefited from slightly better timing. I also enjoyed the all-you-can-drink beer, the ice cream by the baths (Haagen-Dazs!), and the morning juice and milk. Next time, I’d like to visit during a colder season for an even more cozy stay.

A memorable stay where we discovered books and great food.

It was a truly luxurious time, surrounded by Hakone’s nature and countless books. No matter where you are in the Hotel, the space naturally makes you want to pick up a book, and you can feel time slow down. Because the books aren’t categorized by genre, I also discovered titles I wouldn’t normally choose. Above all, the food was outstanding. Using local specialties from the Tokaido region, each dish came with explanations that wove in the history and culture of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido—so it wasn’t just a meal, but a true “dining experience.” The meals themselves became one of the highlights of my trip. I recommend visiting to read, to enjoy the cuisine, or simply to do nothing and relax. It’s a Hotel I’d definitely want to return to when I’m in Hakone.

    Still the best as always.

This was our first stay in a year, and this time we visited as a couple. Books, Onsen, nutritious meals—and then a nap. Thanks to the wonderful atmosphere as always and the professional Hotel staff, we fully enjoyed our three days again. You can also discover new book genres you wouldn’t normally pick up. It truly feels like the ultimate luxury for adults.

It was an unusually dry rainy season.

I was able to relax and enjoy my stay again this time. I’ve been so busy that my wish to visit every month hasn’t been easy to fulfill, and another month has passed... Even so, the staff welcomed me as always with warm, reassuring smiles, making for a comfortable stay, unhurried time to unwind, and delicious meals. Everything about it is truly soothing. Before I knew it, half of this year has already gone by—but I’ll do my best so I can come back again.

A themed Hotel for books and gourmet dining—delightful surprises that will move you.

This book-themed Hotel also stands out for its dining. Both dinner and breakfast feature fresh, seasonal local ingredients, and breakfast even included delicious local milk served in a glass bottle. I hadn’t paid much attention to the gifts offered as a Diamond member before, but this time I was pleasantly surprised to find a bottle of “Monet” included among the complimentary stay perks. It’s rare for a Hotel to provide such an expensive bottle free of charge in the minibar (or Room).

It was the best solo trip I’ve ever had.

I stayed here as a solo trip to reward myself after long exam prep and to think about what comes next. Soaking in the Onsen, then enjoying a beer in loungewear with no makeup. Relaxing with a book while gently swaying in a comfortable, stylish chair with greenery in view… it was the ultimate luxury! There were many other solo travelers as well, and I never got bored—I could even read during any wait time at meals. It turned into the wonderful 2-night, 3-day stay I had imagined. Traveling with friends sounds fun too, but I definitely want to come back again for another carefree solo trip!

A truly unique Accommodation, perfect for solo travelers as well. The quality of the food is excellent.

We were extremely satisfied. We stayed for two nights with my book-loving son. It felt just like being in a bookstore—you can skim through all kinds of books, and there are unique reading spaces everywhere. For both breakfast and dinner over our two-night stay, they made sure not to serve the same dishes twice, which was very thoughtful. Above all, the ingredients—including seasonings—are carefully selected, and the cooking is outstanding! Since it was originally a company retreat facility, it did feel a bit old in places and some finishes were rough, but the great points mentioned above more than made up for it. It’s a shame we missed the lunch offered for Multiple Night Stay guests. We plan to return.

It was a wonderful Hotel lined with countless books. My foreign husband, who loves books, also looked delighted spending time surrounded by so many. The meals were truly delicious, and what especially stayed with me was being able to enjoy dishes made with carefully selected fish chosen by Naoki Maeda—fish that is not easy to obtain. There was a beer server for the welcome drink, and we could freely enjoy coffee and tea as well. After the bath, Häagen-Dazs ice cream and juice were even provided. Everything was high quality, and we felt thoughtful attention to detail throughout. I love Hotels and Ryokan and have stayed in many places over the years, but for anyone who “loves books,” “wants to relax at a leisurely pace,” “wants to enjoy Onsen in their Room,” and “also wants great food,” this is a Hotel I would highly recommend. All of the staff were very pleasant, and we were able to spend our entire stay comfortably. Thank you for such a lovely time. I would definitely like to visit again.

An Accommodation that makes you genuinely feel that even a rainy travel day is just fine

You plan your trip, make an Accommodation Reservation, and count down the days—then the day finally arrives and the forecast calls for rain, or even a typhoon. It’s truly disappointing. What makes this Hotel special is simple: it has the power to make your trip 100% satisfying on its own. When I stayed at Matsumoto Jujo before, I actually thought, “I wish it had rained today.” The weather was great that time, so I did what I always do—sightseeing until the last minute and checking in late. Once I realized how incredible this Hotel truly is, I regretted not checking in earlier… but when it’s sunny, you can’t help wanting to go everywhere. So this time, when a typhoon forecast came out for my travel day to Hakone Honbako, I found myself oddly excited. Honbako is the only Hotel where you don’t have to stress over the forecast—and might even secretly hope for a little typhoon “lock-in.” So much fun. I want a Multiple Night Stay.

    Relaxing Stay Plan

We had a relaxing stay with the 22-hour Plan that includes early check-in and late check-out. It was my first visit in five years, and my husband’s first time. Last time we visited in autumn, but this time it was midsummer, and perhaps because the chef has changed, the food felt quite different from what I remembered. The menu stayed light with summer vegetables as the main theme, so I wondered if it would feel filling enough for my husband. However, he seemed satisfied with both the portion size and flavors that didn’t feel heavy the next day. For our age group, it was an enjoyable balance. At the baths, we were kindly informed that there are two different types of spring water. Because we chose a long stay, we were able to enjoy both at a leisurely pace. We also had plenty of time to browse the bookshelves slowly when choosing books—so early check-in was definitely the right choice. The complimentary drinks were well stocked: coffee and herbal tea, draft beer, and in the morning fresh milk and vegetable juice, among others. There was also ice cream near the large public bath area. Even though we don’t drink alcohol much, there was plenty for us to enjoy. As for Facilities: we found it difficult to unlock our Room door with one hand, making it hard to enter while holding coffee. It would have been helpful to have some guidance about things like towel drying in the Room or how to use mosquito repellent devices. It may have been on the iPad, but a brief explanation would still have been appreciated. Also, some book areas were hard for first-time guests to find; having something like a map could be helpful. Regarding dinner: personally, I felt the chef’s live talk during dinner included a bit too much information. It might be enough to briefly explain key points of each dish—such as highlights of ingredients worth ordering—following along with the course menu at the beginning. After that, guests could enjoy at their own pace while focusing on drink pairings and conversation. Overall, we fully enjoyed this Hotel’s concept and had a very satisfying trip.

    Awesome!

This was my second stay since April, and I stayed for two nights again this time. There was a different selection of books than last time, and I finally found one I’d been curious about for a while—I ended up reading it straight through to the end. The in-Room Onsen and the open-air bath downstairs were amazing! The Häagen-Dazs ice cream and juices were delicious too, and it felt so good to relax after the bath—sipping juice in the dimly lit space while absentmindedly watching short films. The meals were also excellent—everything was carefully prepared with seasonal ingredients. The food felt gentle on the body. For lunch on the second day, I had the summer vegetable curry, which was delicious as well. The property is always quiet and calming, so I was able to unwind at my own pace and truly relax on my own. It was an amazing three days. I’d love to come back for another two-night stay within this year. Thank you very much!

    It was a wonderful trip.

I stayed here as a solo female traveler. It was a Thursday–Friday stay, and maybe it was just by chance, but there were many other women traveling alone, which made it very comfortable. There were lots of books, and I could read beautiful books as much as I wanted. I could go back to my Room and read slowly in a great chair, or read in a hammock while listening to birds—an irresistible environment for book lovers. I even bought one favorite book to take home. The service and the food were also excellent. Just one point: as others have mentioned in their reviews, I noticed a faint smell on the bed sheets and pillowcases—like they hadn’t fully dried. Since I went into the Onsen in the morning afterward, it wasn’t an issue for me, but I thought some people might be sensitive to it. Other than that, everything was truly wonderful: plenty of complimentary drinks and snacks, and I could even enjoy Häagen-Dazs after bathing—two perfect days. There were many lovely reading chairs as well, and I’m thinking that someday I’d like to buy the same chair that this Hotel uses. I will definitely come again. Thank you very much.

    We had a relaxing stay.

I was overwhelmed and delighted by the sheer number of books that greeted me the moment I opened the door. All the interior decor was stylish as well. Each Room has its own Onsen, and there is also a large communal bath, so I was very satisfied. Coffee, juice, and Häagen-Dazs are free, and beer is available until 10:00. I was able to spend a relaxing time reading while enjoying drinks or watching the mini theater. However, meals are served in a performance-style format together with other guests, so it didn’t feel very relaxing, and the food did not live up to my expectations (everything felt rather plain and not memorable). Breakfast in particular felt like vegetarian Buddhist cuisine and wasn’t filling enough… Neither dinner nor breakfast had colorful dishes that look good in photos. The portions may also be small. In addition, cicadas and moths came into the in-room bath area, which caught me off guard. Also, the amenity toothbrush does not come with toothpaste attached, so it’s better to bring your own. That said, it’s an Accommodation where you can truly unwind without worrying about time, and I would like to visit again. If the meals were improved, it would be perfect.

The atmosphere and the food were excellent.

Every meal we enjoyed in the stylish space surrounded by an impressive wall of bookshelves was outstanding. All of the food was truly delicious, and both the tableware and presentation were beautiful, allowing us to spend a wonderfully elegant and memorable time. We also enjoyed a wide variety of interesting books—not only novels, but also titles on design, handicrafts, cooking, and many other genres. However, there was one disappointing issue... When I got into bed, I found hair on the pillow, and the duvet cover had a strong damp smell that was quite unpleasant. I could also see several strands of hair inside the sheets (between the mattress and the sheet), which made me worry that perhaps the sheets or pillowcases hadn’t been changed. Other than that, we were truly very satisfied!
