    Extraordinary Happiness

    This is my second time at Le Grand. Until last year, I celebrated my daughter's birthday at Le Grand in Old Karuizawa. The Onsen, facilities, and breakfast here are better. Above all, it allows you to forget daily life and be surrounded by happiness. I'm delighted to have spent another memorable birthday here this year. Thank you for the celebratory champagne as well! I hope to spend next year here again! Of course, Old Karuizawa is also convenient with great dinner options and rooms.

    A Chic and Relaxing Getaway

    The natural surroundings on the property were wonderful, and we enjoyed a relaxing stroll. We also unwound at two Onsen facilities. Having stayed at various hotels in Karuizawa before, I’ve decided to make this my go-to place for future visits. Thank you to all the staff for your thoughtful hospitality.

    I stayed for one nig...

    I stayed for one night. The atmosphere was calm and quiet, allowing me to relax and unwind. The meals were very delicious. However, the path to the outdoor Onsen was dark and it was hard to see my footing, so I felt it would be better if there were more lights along the way.

    I would like to visit again on a sunny day.

    The check-in service and dinner service were excellent. Especially during dinner, the dishes were served at a good pace, considering how quickly I was eating (which was great for someone like me who dislikes waiting too long between courses). I usually follow a low-sodium diet, and they accommodated this with the seasoning. However, I was disappointed that the Room had a slight musty smell—perhaps due to its north-facing direction or the rain. Additionally, there were no facial cleansers or skincare amenities provided. As for the public bath... it opened after 3 PM, and when I used it shortly after 3 PM, the floor felt slippery. However, this issue seemed resolved by the next morning—perhaps cleaning is only done in the morning?

    A comfortable Hotel to stay

    Located on a hill slightly away from Naka-Karuizawa, the hotel offers a great view of Mount Asama over the town. Although there was no doorman, I was quickly greeted as if they had been monitoring through a screen, which made me feel at ease. Despite being established in 2018, the classic lobby gave off the charm of a long-standing famous hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, with a spacious bathroom and large shower booth that added to my satisfaction. With Shuttle Service included, I could visit the lounge on top of the mountain where sparkling wine was served. It was relaxing to enjoy both the drink and scenery. Having proper glasses for sparkling wine would enhance satisfaction even more. The staff were very pleasant and attentive, which made my stay even more enjoyable. The course meal was delicious; especially memorable were the seared Spanish mackerel—a first for me—and the baked pie with matsutake mushrooms that evoked seasonal flavors. The fresh white seabream and meat dishes were also excellent. On top of everything, it happened to be my wife’s birthday on our stay's final day. They prepared a special dessert for her and gifted us a bottle of sparkling wine at checkout—an incredibly touching gesture! Thank you so much for making our experience unforgettable. We look forward to visiting again!

    My previous stay was...

    My previous stay was solo, but this time I stayed with my wife after a long while. The meals were delicious, and the staff's hospitality was excellent. However, the main building's large public bath we used after dinner was terrible. The moment I opened the door to the bath, my eyes stung and hurt, my throat felt scratchy, and there was a sharp chemical smell—likely due to excessive use of chemicals (chlorine?). Having stayed at this Hotel several times before, I knew this wasn't normal. From this unprecedented experience, I immediately moved to the outdoor bath without even washing myself and left shortly after. When I asked my wife about her experience in the women's bath, she confirmed it was in a similar condition. As it was only her second stay at this Hotel and she couldn't judge well initially, she washed herself and entered the tub (possibly inhaling chemicals), which caused her to cough all night despite gargling multiple times. As an IKYU Diamond Member who has experienced various accommodations before, this situation was by far one of the worst I've encountered. The management of the bathing Facility is unacceptable.

    We visited to celebr...

    We visited to celebrate my parents' golden wedding anniversary. Everything, from the hotel's exterior to the interior, rooms, and restaurant, was so beautiful that it felt like being in Europe. The French cuisine was exceptional, and the service provided by everyone at the hotel was outstanding. Next time, I would love to enjoy a multiple night stay and fully relax in the hotel life.

    Room Odor

    The building had a Western-style design, and the Room was lovely. However, there was an unpleasant smell, possibly from the drainage in the sink, toilet, or bathroom area, resembling cat urine, which was concerning. The pajamas were also full of lint balls, which bothered me. The breakfast was very delicious. If it weren't for the smell in the Room, I would love to stay again.

    Family Trip with Grandchild (6 Years Old)

    Overall, the facility is excellent, and I am satisfied. However, my satisfaction falls slightly short of a perfect score because there were no meals suitable for my 6-year-old grandchild. The French course dinner provided did not suit their taste.

    The Unchanging Flow of Time

    We stay here every year during the September holiday. The staff always welcomes us warmly. When we informed them that we might not make it in time for our dinner reservation due to construction on the Chuo Expressway, they handled it flexibly. The villa suite-type room is spacious and comfortable. The bed is cozy, and the view from the large bathtub is exceptional. Although this year had a lot of rain, the view from the mountain terrace was truly stunning. The brown roof of the hotel below, the vast land beyond it, and Mount Asama are sights you never tire of seeing. On clear nights, constellations are beautifully visible; unfortunately, this year was rainy. However, because of the rain, there was a deep morning mist that added charm. Walking down slopes during meals or outings offers great views with autumn insects chirping in harmony—it’s an enjoyable experience—and my daughter looked forward to riding back up in an electric car every time; she loves sitting at the very back seat! At Vaas restaurant for breakfast and dinner venues alike—staff service stood out positively alongside delicious dishes served consistently well! My daughter enjoyed her meals too while personally favoring stewed pork paired alongside stir-fried summer vegetables offered amongst breakfast options available daily. My wife indulges annually within spa services provided onsite leaving satisfied each visit without fail though minor drawbacks include poor television reception given its mountainous location coupled against being directly opposite church premises where wedding ceremonies occur occasionally leading towards limited relaxation attire choices indoors sometimes felt awkwardly exposed under such circumstances observed externally nearby guests attending events held therein otherwise overall remains memorable experiences cherished fondly together as family unit planning return next season     Like a small village...

    It was a wonderful place where you can experience an extraordinary atmosphere, like a small village in Europe. This Hotel warmly welcomes families with small children, so during dinner, we enjoyed a full-course meal while hearing the cheerful cries of babies and watching families standing and sitting to comfort them. It gave us much to think about. Outside of dinner time, being surrounded by the forest provided fresh air, and the Hotel offered a relaxing stay. The meals were delicious, and the staff were incredibly kind, making our experience highly satisfying.

    The atmosphere did not match.

    A classical Hotel located in the forest, where even going for dinner required walking through the woods to another building. The Room was very spacious, but instead of a refrigerator, there was only a cooler. While it could keep drinks cool, it couldn't refrigerate items like bottled beverages, which was very inconvenient. The staff lacked smiles, and the atmosphere inside the Hotel was dim, leaving us feeling disappointed despite traveling all the way to Karuizawa. The breakfast had limited options, and the tableware seemed inadequate. For some reason, coffee was served only after calling the staff, making it impossible to enjoy freely. Overall, it was an inconvenient Hotel.

    Experience the Extraordinary

    It was more comfortable than I expected. The room was spacious, and the Onsen was satisfying. We enjoyed the scenery with the shuttle service provided multiple times by cart. Thank you for accommodating changes to the dinner for items I am not fond of. However, I would have preferred a simpler seasoning. Breakfast was delicious. I would like to visit again.

    The view is spectacular.

    The view from the mountain terrace and poolside was breathtaking, with Mount Asama right in front of us—it was truly refreshing. To reach the mountain terrace, we needed to take a cart ride, and despite many guests requesting rides individually, the staff kindly accommodated everyone without hesitation or complaint. The guest rooms were spacious and elegantly furnished, making it a Hotel we would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    Overall, it was excellent.

    We stayed here for a birthday trip for my son and husband. The weather was perfect, and the views from the mountain suite, poolside, and garden were stunning. My son had a great time running around and exploring. Dinner was luxurious and very filling. My husband kept saying "Karuizawa is amazing" about ten times after arriving at the hotel! The staff seemed to be mostly young, so there were some moments of inexperience, but they appeared to work well as a team under the guidance of senior employees. Overall, it was a very satisfying stay at this accommodation. One concern was that the room lighting felt dim and the air conditioning didn’t seem to work well—it remained warm even when we lowered the temperature repeatedly. However, since it’s a summer retreat area, it wasn’t too bothersome. We hope to stay again someday. Thank you!

    A Resort in the Forest

    Le Grand Karuizawa was the perfect choice for a relaxing girls' trip! The elegant Western-style building and calm interior suited us perfectly. At the mountain terrace lounge, we enjoyed welcome drinks while admiring the breathtaking view. The Onsen in the main building was perfect for relieving our travel fatigue. Another Onsen was also great, though there were quite a few fallen leaves and insects in the open-air bath—understandable given its forest location but slightly disappointing. Still, we had a peaceful and relaxing time enjoying spaces like the pool and lounge bar. The room was incredibly spacious and comfortable! Breakfast offered a wide variety of Japanese and Western dishes, all delicious. The staff's warm smiles and excellent service added to our experience. We had such a wonderful time here and would love to visit again someday. Thank you!

    Hotel for Enjoying Nature

    Overall, it was a satisfying Hotel. The food was delicious, served at a good pace, and we enjoyed our meals comfortably. Both breakfast and dinner featured plenty of local ingredients, which was great. The Onsen was enjoyable despite a few insects in the open-air bath due to the summer season. The free drink service hours felt slightly short, and the variety seemed limited. Staff assistance for moving to the terrace on the mountain was excellent and much appreciated. The cart ride with a pleasant breeze added to the experience. The starry sky was also beautiful.

    "Disappointed with the Premium French Cuisine"

    We revisited this time looking forward to the French dinner, which we had enjoyed so much on previous stays. This time, we chose a slightly more luxurious "Mountain View Suite" room and upgraded our meal to the "<Premium French> Luxurious Ingredients Premium Dinner." On the day of our visit, we were excited about what dishes would be served, but unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. The fish dish was "Herb-Crusted Sea Bream," but the herb aroma was faint, and the molokhia sauce lacked depth. Most disappointing of all was that both the fish and plate were served lukewarm. For the main course, there were three options: "Charcoal-Grilled Beef Fillet," "Pork Sauté," or "Beef Cheek Stewed in Wine." Is this really premium French cuisine? We chose the beef fillet; however, it felt far from premium—just ordinary—and rather dry for a fillet cut. Overall, none of the dishes conveyed any sense of luxury ingredients or innovative presentation; nor did they exhibit delicate flavors. One dish featured a salad with oxtail and foie gras as its third course. Since I had informed them in advance that my wife dislikes foie gras, they simply removed it from her plate without substituting anything else—leaving an unappealingly sparse dish behind. In past experiences at other ryokans or hotels where disliked ingredients like foie gras were used in meals, they usually replaced them with alternative ingredients or offered entirely different dishes instead; this approach here felt very lacking. Additionally troubling was how rushed everything felt during service—the moment we set down our utensils after finishing one course would immediately prompt staff members to clear plates away while bringing out subsequent courses right after! From start-to-dessert took only about an hour altogether—even though neither myself nor my wife drink alcohol—we still wished for more leisurely pacing throughout dinner. Given how exceptional previous meals had been during earlier visits here—it left us utterly shocked by such stark differences between then versus now—and calling these offerings “premium French” seemed highly misleading/disappointing overall! As for accommodations themselves—the room boasted great views alongside spacious comfort—but certain inconveniences stood out considering expectations tied towards staying within resort hotels at similar levels: lack-of women-specific amenities provided inside rooms inability accessing standard terrestrial/BS television channels directly needing shuttle services arranged whenever heading toward main building areas like baths/restaurants etc., all contributed minor frustrations experienced along way

    Proposal Plan Usage

    I used the one-couple-per-day exclusive Proposal Plan. The location, meals, and Room were absolutely wonderful. However, I was disappointed that the bouquet prepared for the proposal was incorrect. More roses than I had requested in advance were provided (likely meant for another couple), and right after I handed it to my partner, a staff member hurriedly came to exchange it. As a result, the large bouquet was replaced with a smaller one, which slightly dampened the mood. Additionally, after the proposal, we were told that staff could take photos for us upon request. However, when we asked for this service and were told to "wait five minutes," no staff member ever returned afterward. Considering this is an exclusive one-couple-per-day plan with a significant price tag, I felt disappointed by these organizational issues. That said, all of the staff members were generally kind and created a very pleasant atmosphere overall.

    Hotel with a Beautiful Garden

    The hotel had a European-like atmosphere. Despite the rainy weather, we were able to enjoy the beauty of the greenery and well-maintained flowers, experiencing the essence of travel, refreshment, and an extraordinary escape. The view from the mountain terrace was also stunning and truly soothing. You can relax with complimentary coffee or lemonade while enjoying the spectacular scenery. The meals were just right in portion and delicious. One downside for our family was the chlorine in the Onsen. Whether it was due to its unique properties or disinfection purposes, it triggered sneezing due to allergies, which was unfortunate. However, there is a bath and shower room in each Room as well. Overall, we were very satisfied with this Hotel and took many photos during our stay—something that rarely happens on my trips! Highly recommended for those who want to spend their time leisurely and peacefully!

    We stayed at the accommodation for our wedding anniversary. It had a profound and historical atmosphere, which was very pleasant. The open-air bath and the quality of the water were excellent, allowing us to relax fully. Thank you for the wedding anniversary wine we received upon departure. However, as we do not drink alcohol, it might have been nice to have options like apple juice instead.

    At the Mountain Top ...

    At the Mountain Top Terrace, I enjoyed a relaxing morning and evening. The garden was filled with beautifully blooming roses, which was truly soothing. I felt completely refreshed and very satisfied. Next time, I would love to stay a bit longer. It would be even better if Shuttle Service to the Nakakaruizawa area could be provided.

    This was my first ti...

    This was my first time using this service. The Room was on the 3rd floor, and I had to use the stairs from the 2nd floor. Carrying an infant and a lot of luggage down the stairs on departure was very challenging. At the breakfast restaurant, perhaps because I had an infant, I was guided to a spot slightly up some stairs. Carrying food up those stairs was difficult. I will not be using this service again.

    Clean and has a great atmosphere.

    The Shuttle Service was convenient, making it easy for us to stay even without a car. The Room was very clean and stylish. The view and comfort of the mountain terrace were excellent, allowing us to enjoy a relaxing drink there for the perfect holiday. Both breakfast and dinner were truly delicious; not only the course dinner but also freshly baked bread and Calpis butter left a lasting impression. The amenities like body towels and pajamas had a pleasant texture on the skin. The garden plants were beautiful, making me wish I could have held my wedding here—it was that wonderful!

    The garden is beautiful.

    This was my first stay in Karuizawa. The room was spacious. However, the dinner served had fewer dishes and smaller portions. The fish dish tasted oily and caused heartburn, which was disappointing. The only thing I enjoyed was the butter served with the bread. Breakfast was a buffet that included Japanese options, which I appreciated. The room key card did not have a number on it, making it difficult to remember the room location. The bath felt more like a spa rather than an Onsen experience. It was nice that there was a nearby day-use Onsen available for free. All the staff were young and very kind.

    I felt very relaxed ...

    I felt very relaxed in the environment surrounded by greenery. It would have been nice to have cosmetic amenities in the room. Since I stayed on top of a mountain, the view was great, but the Onsen in the main building felt a bit far. For dinner, I ate at the soba restaurant on-site, and dishes other than soba were also delicious.

    I would love to stay here again.

    The staff were incredibly kind and made our stay very pleasant. The Japanese-style suite was not only clean but also flat, making it perfect for spending time with our young grandchild. The Onsen facilities were spacious, clean, and extremely comfortable. We chose the luxurious French cuisine for our meals, which I thoroughly enjoyed; however, it seemed a bit heavy for the younger members of our group. The only downside was that due to renovations or extensions, the elevator only went up to the second floor. Additionally, the stylish floors and hallways had a complex layout with similar scenery throughout, making it hard to navigate in just one night. Several guests were seen wandering with their keys trying to find their way around—providing a floor plan might be helpful in such cases. Despite this minor inconvenience, we felt an abundance of resort-like atmosphere and warm hospitality from the staff that makes us want to visit again!

    Revisiting Le Grand Resort for an Early Summer Villa Stay

    I had the opportunity to visit Le Grand Resort again this month, following my stay last month. This time, I stayed in a villa with my family of three. While I was looking forward to experiencing a different ambiance compared to the main building from my previous visit, there were a few points that caught my attention. Firstly, I noticed that the villa amenities were somewhat basic. In particular, the absence of bath salts—though a small detail—did affect the overall satisfaction of our stay. Regarding dinner, while the quality and content during our June visit left a strong impression on me, this time it fell slightly short of expectations. Being summer vacation season, there seemed to be an overall lack of consistency in service quality—a challenge perhaps unique to peak seasons. What stood out as particularly disappointing was hygiene at the breakfast buffet. Food dropped by other guests remained unattended for some time, and most concerningly, chopsticks were provided wet and in an unclean state. Although I informed staff about this immediately, their response was not very reassuring. Given its high potential as a resort destination, managing quality according to seasonal demand and crowd levels might be an area for improvement moving forward. That said, I still found the natural environment surrounding the facility and the fundamental hospitality from staff members truly remarkable. It seems timing played a significant role during this visit; however, compared to my previous stay here, there were moments where cost performance felt slightly lacking. Le Grand Resort remains an incredibly appealing place worth visiting repeatedly. I'm looking forward to discovering new charms and memorable experiences during my next stay!
