This is my favorite Hotel, with a great atmosphere and excellent food, and I stay here regularly. However, just one thing this time…

Everything is excellent—the surroundings, the solid feel of the building, the Room, the service, the food, and the Facility such as the gym and an incredibly relaxing open-air Onsen—so this is our go-to Accommodation. Set on spacious grounds, it feels like a countryside town in Europe. It doesn’t feel fake at all; it has real character and weight, and they serve French cuisine that matches that atmosphere. The Room is also very spacious, including a large vanity area and bath. The service is attentive while keeping a comfortable distance. That’s why we’ve stayed here many times. However, there was one thing this time. For dinner you can choose from three main dishes, and I always choose the beef steak. Until now it had been filet, but this time it was ribeye/sirloin. I was a bit worried—and as expected it was quite fatty. My wife and I don’t do well with fatty beef, so neither of us could eat much; my wife could only manage one bite. It was really disappointing not to be able to enjoy the main dish we had been looking forward to… I doubt we’re the only guests who struggle with fatty steak at that point in a course meal. You might say we should have chosen something else—but we loved it because it used to be filet. Also, since we barely touched the main dish and left most of it behind, I thought someone might ask or say something—but the dining staff simply cleared our plates by-the-book without mentioning it at all and moved straight on to dessert talk. That made me a little sad. Other than that, though, it’s a wonderful Hotel. We’ll be back again—hopefully filet will be back by then. I’d honestly be happy to pay extra for that if needed—please make it happen if possible.

It felt like the only place in Karuizawa where you can relax quietly in a small village atmosphere!

I don’t understand why this meal is rated so highly.

There was no soup with the French dinner on either of the two nights. It made me wonder if that is the level of meal being offered. The same goes for Japanese cuisine: you can tell a lot about the day’s cooking from the soup served at the beginning. Having no soup both nights felt odd. While the menu did differ between the first and second night, the appetizer salad was almost the same. On the second night, adding grapefruit would have sharpened and balanced the flavor, but there was little sense of creativity. The main beef dish was very red—almost raw. I prefer it well-cooked and would have liked to be asked my preferred doneness. Perhaps you take pride in your ingredients, but even though asparagus appeared frequently on both nights, it wasn’t particularly impressive. At minimum, I would have liked to be able to choose between bread or rice. Breakfast was also almost identical on both days, and it tasted like pre-made items were being served. I would like to see more effort and variety. Most staff were kind, but there were a few exceptions. On the third floor there are only stairs, and for elderly guests going up and down twice is quite difficult. I asked for my delivery shipment to be collected from my Room (as an elderly guest carrying a heavy cardboard box down from the third floor to the first is not something we normally do—and it’s also quite a distance from our Room), but I was met with an unpleasant expression and told they were short-staffed and asked whether I could send it out during the night instead. That put me in a difficult position; however, when I said I would have it ready by 9:00 a.m., they agreed. Still, that response felt uncomfortable. Rather than reacting negatively because staffing is limited, I wanted them to show willingness by offering specific alternatives—for example: “Because we are short-staffed, if possible please avoid 10:00–11:00 when we get busiest.” Following procedures is expected, but more than that I wanted to see an attitude of always thinking about what can be done for guests (and this applies to other staff as well). The garden maintenance was truly excellent—I was impressed. Managing grounds of that size must be very hard work, but it has been done extremely well. Walking around them was very enjoyable. Karuizawa feels wonderful and I would like to visit again many times; however, please provide service that makes guests feel they can truly say they want to return to this Hotel as well.

    It made me feel elegant.

With the meticulous craftsmanship of a classic Hotel, everything—from the lobby and Room to the hallways and bath area—was luxuriously designed and truly magnificent. The staff were also very attentive, making this a stay I will remember for a lifetime. Since our Room was near the bath area, we could hear the boiler a bit early in the morning, but overall it is a wonderful Hotel. Thank you very much.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We visited to enjoy the coolness of summer. Although it was hot during the day, the mornings and evenings were pleasantly cool and comfortable. There were still some roses in bloom on the mountaintop terrace, and they were beautiful. We enjoyed a relaxing, luxurious time. We would love to visit again.

We thoroughly enjoyed a special summer getaway.

I was able to enjoy an extraordinary getaway at this quiet mountain resort, with a soothing atmosphere and magnificent views of Mt. Asama. The staff’s warm smiles and professional service—always offering the finest hospitality—were truly comforting. Dinner while watching Mt. Asama at dusk from the mountaintop was a special experience you can’t find anywhere else. From the spa’s open-air bath, the sky felt vast; I imagined how beautiful the stars must be on a clear night, and after my bath I cooled down with a soft drink at the poolside bar. The view from the pool over the European-style buildings, courtyard, and Mt. Asama beyond was also outstanding. It was a Resort Hotel where you can enjoy a truly special summer retreat.

    It’s a lovely place, but…

The atmosphere was wonderful. Spending time up on the mountain felt great, with beautiful views. There is nothing around the Hotel, but it’s a relaxing place to unwind. The Room was spacious but simple. However, the amenities were only slightly better than those of a Business Hotel, and the amenities in the public bath were a bit better but still very minimal. The hair dryer wasn’t a high-end model either… (For a Hotel at this level, I expected something better.) Perhaps because there are many young staff members, I didn’t feel much hospitality. Normally, if you ask about a photo spot and it’s right there, I think it would be nice if someone offered to take a photo. At check-in, there was no welcome drink and we had to wait over 20 minutes. No one saw us off when we left either. Honestly, I was surprised. My biggest disappointment was that I chose this Hotel specifically because it offered both an Onsen and a pool, yet the pool water level was so low that even children couldn’t swim. At first we were told it was due to water shortages, and later due to leakage, which was very disappointing. There was no particular follow-up afterward. The next day didn’t seem much different either, but no one mentioned anything unless we asked. (It also wasn’t stated on the Hotel website—so maybe it was temporary?? Still, since some guests come specifically for the pool, I think it should have been noted.) Our child was disappointed, but the Onsen was great so the adults enjoyed it. That said, thanks to your consideration regarding our restaurant seating/location arrangement in the restaurant area/place/venue/space/location/setting/dining room/dining area/dining space/dining venue/table placement/table arrangement/seating arrangement/seating location/seat assignment/reservation seating/private seating/quieter table/family-friendly table/away from other guests/we could dine comfortably without worrying about other guests; we truly appreciated being able to enjoy a delicious meal. Deeply disappointed with the pool issues and the response

This was our second stay at this Hotel, and we stayed for two nights again. We returned because we had such a pleasant time last time, and the French dinner was excellent. This time as well, we came looking forward to enjoying the pool with its wonderful location—but it turned into a very disappointing stay. On the second day, my family and I headed to the pool in our swimsuits and found the water level was only below knee height. We were told the pool opens from 3:00 p.m., so we went at 3:00 p.m. After taking seats by the pool, I went into the lounge area to look for staff, but no one was there. About 15 minutes later, I asked a female staff member who happened to pass by; she said she didn’t know what the normal water level should be. I told her that we stayed around this same time last year and that the water level had been filled right up to the edge (this Hotel prides itself on its photogenic infinity pool, which is prominently featured on its website). She said she would check—and then disappeared, returning around 4:00 p.m. After making us wait an hour, her final answer was: “Water is leaking through gaps between tiles, so it won’t fill any further today.” During that time no one came to inspect the pool at all, so I asked whether they had known since yesterday; she replied that she didn’t know because she had only been told what to say. Several families were in the pool waiting for more water to be added while struggling with both how shallow it was—like a footbath—and how hot it felt—like hot spring water—so I suggested they should explain it to everyone there as well. She then went around explaining group by group before returning. Later, when we gave up and headed next door to use the Onsen instead, only then did a male Hotel staff member arrive with another man to look at the pool—but they chatted for a minute or two and left without even acknowledging guests in or near the pool or offering any apology; they did not put up any notice or appear to arrange repairs either. Even if tile damage is true (and therefore poor pre-checks), having such Facility issues raises questions for a Resort Hotel in itself—but what disappointed me most was how slow their response was and how over an hour of our valuable time was wasted before any explanation was given. Even at checkout there was no apology or explanation from reception regarding this matter whatsoever, which I found extremely disappointing. While there are wonderful staff members in the restaurant who work hard serving meals from morning until night, their lack of coordination during trouble situations—and their insincere customer service—stood out strongly here, which is deeply regrettable.

    We saw a deer!

I was disappointed before because the twin Room had almost no view, so this time I chose a double Room. The view of Mt. Asama was wonderful. If possible, I would appreciate a Hollywood twin setup. The dinner course was delicious—especially the chilled corn soup, which was sweet and became my favorite. The presentation was beautiful, and the flavors were not too strong—just right. I arrived early and check-in was quick, but I still couldn’t enter the Room yet. Does this Hotel not offer a welcome drink? Since it’s summer, I would be happy if something could be provided. I asked to be taken by cart to the mountaintop terrace to cool off, but there wasn’t even water available there either. (It seems drinks are served after 3:00 p.m., both near the pool and at the mountaintop.) There are no vending machines on the property, and since it’s in the mountains, I hope you can improve this. That said, as always, your garden has beautiful flowers and is rich in nature. While walking down using the outdoor stairs from the mountaintop area, I heard rustling—when I looked over, a deer was running up! This is a Hotel I would definitely like to visit again.

Enjoy Onsen baths and delicious dining at a classically styled Hotel.

The Shuttle Service from Karuizawa Station is very convenient. Although the Hotel is a bit far from the station, the location is wonderful in return. The spacious grounds feel open and relaxing, with Happu Onsen and a chapel scattered throughout. Whenever we come to Karuizawa, we always stay here. After check-in, we took the Hotel cart up to the top of the hill and enjoyed lemonade time. It was cloudy so we couldn’t see Mt. Asama, though. After returning to our Room in the main building, we relaxed at length in the main building’s Onsen and open-air bath. After bathing, we unwound by the poolside with Calpis and coffee. For dinner, we ate at the hilltop restaurant and truly enjoyed our meal thanks to the staff’s attentive service. Thank you very much. The next morning was a buffet with both Japanese and Western options, and I ended up eating too much. Since this stay was to celebrate my husband’s birthday, thank you for the complimentary celebratory wine—we’re looking forward to enjoying it at home later. Because this is a Hotel we love so much—and perhaps because it has been some time since it opened—I did notice that several Washlets were not working properly in a few places. I hope they will be fixed by our next visit. Thank you again to all of your staff for taking such good care of us.

A Hotel that feels like a European palace

We had planned to visit last September, but we had to cancel because my husband suffered a heart attack, so we were finally able to come this May. I was so excited that I booked the Shinkansen to match the earliest shuttle bus. When we arrived before 11:00, we were shown to a lounge that felt like a European palace and enjoyed coffee. After leaving our luggage, we went straight to the open-air bath at Happu Onsen, then had tempura soba at Minori next door, and used the one-drink service from the front desk for Shinshu apple juice. Since I wanted to explore the spacious grounds, I didn’t take the cart and instead enjoyed the scenery and the sound of Japanese bush warblers. Although check-in is usually at 15:00, they kindly escorted us to our Room early at 13:30 as a special arrangement. After using the open-air bath in the main building, we enjoyed Calpis, cocoa, and apple cookies at the poolside bar. We then walked up to Suite Terrace on top of the hill and had lemonade and apple cookies. The dinner’s new onion potage soup was exquisite—I almost wanted seconds. The sea bream dish was also wonderful: perfectly crisp skin with tender flesh inside, and a delicious seafood-flavored sauce around it. After dessert and coffee arrived, we were surprised to receive additional small sweets as well. For breakfast there was an Onsen egg, so I fully enjoyed my favorite tamago-kake gohan. The Room may feel a little dark for some people, but it’s gentle on your eyes and very relaxing. If you plan to do your makeup, I recommend bringing a handheld mirror into the bathroom area. There were loungewear provided in the Room, and both hand towels and bath towels were available for bathing as well. All of your staff were very kind, which made us truly happy. Next time I’d love to visit when the roses are in bloom. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    For our wedding anniversary

This was my first stay. The views, the building, and the meals were wonderful. Unfortunately, the staff did not seem well trained and could not explain details about the Hotel or the food. For example, when I asked, “This building is amazing—what country was it inspired by?”, I was told they didn’t know, which was disappointing. We stayed in the Mountain-Top Suite, but getting around was not very smooth.

    Wonderful Hotel

The Hotel’s building, Facilities, furnishings, and overall ambiance are wonderful—like a European resort. The food is also delicious; the only suggestion is that it would be even better if the wine pairings for dinner were a bit more thoughtfully curated.

There were no amenities at all in the room, and the loungewear was covered in pilling and did not feel clean. There was no chair in the powder room, which was inconvenient. The noise of children running around on the floor above continued for a long time and was unpleasant. The meals were excellent, but it was disappointing that it did not make for a comfortable trip.

“Is it really okay to stay for this price?”—an amazingly comfortable, memorable stay

Among the many places I’ve stayed—from small inns to well-known luxury Accommodations—this was by far the most comfortable. I was genuinely amazed and found myself thinking, “Is it really okay to stay here at this price?” The grounds felt like a nature-rich European village. Hearing birdsong, visiting a charming little chapel, and taking walks outside were all a delight. Within this expansive area stands a Hotel that feels like a grand Western-style mansion, and exploring the building was exciting—like wandering through a theme park. The Facility offerings are excellent: you can relax in the lounge with complimentary drinks, or spend time in the sauna or gym. I think both active travelers and those who prefer to unwind will be satisfied. I also appreciated being able to use the baths even after check-out. What impressed me most was how comfortable the staff’s approach felt—attentive yet friendly, with consistently wonderful service. Nothing felt lacking, but it also never felt excessive or overly formal. Everything exceeded my expectations, and I was completely satisfied. I usually like trying different places, but this is the first Accommodation that made me think, “I want a Multiple Night Stay,” and “I want to come back.”

The scenery and surroundings were great.

I used the Shuttle Service from Karuizawa Station, but just before departure the bus broke down and the engine stopped. It was a small microbus with no air conditioning, and it felt suffocating, so I got off immediately and went by taxi. The taxi cost 3,600 yen. Regarding this, there was not even a single word of apology or acknowledgment of inconvenience from the Hotel. The Hotel has a classical atmosphere and a calm setting. This time we stayed in a junior suite. The Room was generally dark, and the lamp placed in the corner had no power at all—so even when I turned it on, it would not light up—making the Room inconveniently dim. The lamp was fixed in place and could not reach another outlet; I managed to stretch it to its limit to get it to turn on. Also, due to the season the Room was very dry, and there was a humidifying air purifier running. When I took out the water tank to refill it, it was so moldy that it was frightening—it was not in a usable condition at all. It looked clean at first glance, which made this especially disappointing. Cleaning humidifying air purifiers is essential. As for the food, dishes were served promptly each time we finished eating; however, after the main course dessert did not come until we asked for it, and we were kept waiting quite a long time. The large public bath was spacious and clean, but perhaps set for children—the water was lukewarm and did not warm me up at all even after soaking. So I went to the sauna instead, but that one was too hot to stay in for long. The next morning: since the bread served at dinner the previous day was very delicious, I had high expectations for breakfast bread—but what was served at breakfast was dry and hard as if all moisture had evaporated. Because dinner had been so good overall, this bread felt especially disappointing. Also during breakfast there were children making noise and running around everywhere; we could not relax at all and left quickly. Ideally families should be grouped together or some basic consideration should be provided—but perhaps that is difficult? On our return trip we used the Shuttle Service back to Karuizawa Station again; however it is not by Reservation—it's strictly first-come-first-served—so some people could not board and there ended up being waiting time as well. In addition, inside the cramped vehicle children were loudly hitting and kicking seats; sitting there felt unpleasant. I never want to ride it again. We visited this time to celebrate a birthday anniversary celebration , but there were many disappointing things throughout our stay.

A Harry Potter–like world, like the Haunted Mansion.

This is the best Hotel in every way, from the staff service to everything else. The building was spotless and sparkling clean. We stayed in a Junior Japanese-style Suite, and even for four people the Room was more than spacious—we were very satisfied. At dinner, our children chose Shinshu venison game meat and were very happy with it. Next time, we would like to stay in summer. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay.

    We are very sorry.

I stayed for two nights at the end of the year to relax. I had stayed here a few years ago and was very satisfied, so I chose this Hotel again and booked a Junior Suite for a Multiple Night Stay. However, even though it wasn’t particularly crowded, the quality of service and staff responsiveness had declined significantly. At the Mountain-Top Suite Terrace, a staff member said, “Want me to take a photo?” using overly casual language as if speaking to a friend. The doors to the women’s bath and the pool were not locked, and a man mistakenly entered the women’s bath changing room. I also believe some guests from China may not be familiar with bathing etiquette: they left doors open in the bath area and even in the restroom inside it, and bathed while wrapped in towels. Because staff did not check the bath area regularly, used towels were overflowing. I informed the front desk and asked them to provide guidance on bathing rules for international guests, and at minimum to prevent men from accidentally entering the women’s changing room; however, there was no improvement on the second night. At breakfast, although it was not busy at all, coffee was never brought no matter how many times I asked. The roads within the Facility have many broken tiles; damaged pieces are scattered around, yet no one seems to clean them up. Even if some issues are unavoidable with non-Japanese staff members, it was disappointing that even Japanese employees did not greet guests. I am very disappointed that service has deteriorated this much. The Room is spacious and clean. At Minori restaurant, both taste and quality of the food were satisfying. However, greetings, customer service standards overall management of common areas،and emergency response were unacceptable. I will not stay here again.

This was my first stay in Karuizawa in winter. I’ve always loved how cool and comfortable it is in summer, and winter was wonderful as well. Very different from before.

This was my sixth stay. It’s one of my favorite Hotels, but the quality of the food has declined significantly. All the staff work very hard, and it’s a comfortable Hotel. In the past, I rated it highly as being on par with French restaurants in Ginza, so this was disappointing. Also, it feels a bit lacking that the Room refrigerator contains only paid alcoholic drinks. At the free coffee drink station, I’d at least like to see something like orange juice available. Still, everyone did their best, so I had a pleasant stay. Thank you.

The scenery around the Hotel is amazing! The Room has a nice atmosphere that doesn't feel outdated and was very clean. Dinner was incredibly delicious and wonderful (though the tart dessert felt a bit heavy), but breakfast was disappointing! There were no menu items I wanted to eat (Dormy Inn does it better), which is unfortunate. Without some improvements, I might not consider staying again.

    Stayed for two night...

Stayed for two nights on our honeymoon. The breakfast was outstanding with plenty of options, but the French dinner felt a bit average (especially compared to the 5-star experience at NE〇〇TO.LABO the previous day). Amenities are rated 4 stars as the hairdryer in both the Onsen and Junior Suite seemed slightly outdated. Additionally, there was no facial cleanser provided in the Onsen area, and only a combined hand soap was available. While shampoo and other products were excellent, this contrast was a bit disappointing. The alkaline-based Onsen caused some dryness, so having ceramide-based lotion or other skincare options would have been helpful. That said, overall it was an amazing experience with excellent service and a comfortable room. I would love to stay again if given another opportunity!

The perfect Hotel in Karuizawa where you can enjoy Onsen, delicious cuisine, and a wonderful atmosphere.

A shuttle service from Karuizawa makes it very convenient. We took the 2:30 PM shuttle to the Hotel. After checking in, we enjoyed cocoa time at the Mountain Top Suite Terrace. Unfortunately, it was cloudy, so we couldn’t see Mount Asama, but we had a wonderful time roasting marshmallows by the warm fireplace and sipping cocoa or hot wine. Before dinner, we relaxed in the bath. As it got colder, soaking leisurely in the open-air bath was incredibly relaxing. Dinner at 6:30 PM featured visually delightful dishes; it was my first time trying Spanish mackerel mi-cuit. For the main course, my husband chose beef while I opted for pork—both were delicious! Dessert was autumn-inspired with chestnut ice cream from Obuse and a celebratory message that made us feel truly happy. The next day brought sunny weather, allowing us to take photos by the poolside with beautiful Mount Asama as a backdrop. Breakfast offered both Japanese and Western options—I ended up eating too much! The autumn-themed desserts like persimmon and apple treats as well as ohagi were surprising yet delightful. At checkout, we received commemorative wine to take home—a lovely way to remember our stay at Le Grand even after returning home. Thank you for everything! The only reason I rated room amenities four stars is because of how short the bathrobe length was—that’s my only disappointment. Other than that, this is an exceptional Hotel! We’ll definitely visit again soon. Thank you to all staff members for your hospitality!

    Poor customer service

The service was truly disappointing. Upon arrival, there were no staff to greet us, and we were kept waiting endlessly during check-in while our luggage was left outside unattended. This raised serious security concerns, and our food became completely cold. Even when we called for a cart, it left quickly with other passengers without accommodating us. Additionally, the mountain area had no staff stationed at all. For the price paid, one would expect heartfelt hospitality; however, this level of poor service was unprecedented and deeply disappointing. The only positive aspect was the bar. The drinks were excellent, and the atmosphere was delightful.

This was my second stay after a previous visit, and I had another wonderful experience with the great environment and delicious meals, creating more lovely memories. However, one small concern was the black ring-like stains around the metal parts in the bathroom sink area. Perhaps such details stood out more because of your otherwise excellent hospitality. I look forward to visiting again for next year’s birthday trip!

I stayed for one night. The staff's service was very polite, and I had a pleasant stay. However, there were a few concerns. The room amenities were minimal. Having stayed at various hotels, I feel that accommodations of this level usually offer more comprehensive amenities. When using the onsen in the main building, I experienced strong irritation in my eyes, nose, and throat. Afterward, I couldn't stop sneezing and had a runny nose. Other guests also mentioned they couldn't stop sneezing, and my husband experienced persistent coughing. For dinner, the low-temperature cooked Spanish mackerel had an unpleasant smell; however, everything else was delicious.

A landscape reminiscent of a European village

The expansive grounds feature classical buildings, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a European village. The interior furnishings also have an antique feel. However, the lighting inside the Hotel and guest rooms felt a bit dim. Additionally, the beds in the rooms were slightly high. For dinner, I chose wagyu beef cheek for the meat dish, which was incredibly tender and delicious. For a Hotel of this class, I would have preferred breakfast to not be buffet-style. As it is a new Hotel, many of the staff are young, but everyone provided courteous service.
