    This Accommodation o...

    This Accommodation offers heartfelt hospitality throughout—and you even get to stay in a rare, registered cultural property building. As you step through the entrance, you’re welcomed by a traditional architectural space with a high-ceilinged hall and the gentle smolder of firewood in the irori hearth. The cuisine is prepared with great care, with no shortcuts. There are three Onsen baths, with fresh spring water welling up directly into them, and separate time slots for men and women so you can relax at your own pace. We chose a Plan without an in-room toilet or bath, but it was a wonderful Room filled with the soothing sound of the river. Thank you very much.

    Traditional Onsen Accommodation

    A long-established Accommodation celebrating the 150th anniversary of its Onsen this year. It features a bath where the hot spring water naturally wells up from beneath your feet, in an outstanding location. As the Facility is old, some compromises are necessary—such as no air conditioning in the guest rooms—but if your main purpose is the Onsen, it won’t be an issue at all.

    Horyu Hall

    At the time of Reservation, we entered only the total number of guests (4), without specifying men and women. We did not intend to book a Room under a special Plan, but the Room we were shown on the day was spacious and luxurious, with a living room, bedroom, and Japanese-style room—very satisfying. There were many dishes, but none that particularly stood out. Many of the staff were foreign nationals; their Japanese was excellent and they were very kind.

    I need to plan when to take a bath!

    It was an Onsen Accommodation with a strong sense of history. You could really feel how carefully they continue to use and cherish the old features. I wish I had taken more time to explore the building—some long-established places offer little guided highlights like that, but there weren’t any extra touches here beyond the basics. Also, the three Onsen baths are strictly scheduled by time slot—mixed-gender, women-only, and men-only—so you need to plan your bathing times accordingly. In the morning, while I was in the largest bath during the women-only time slot, a man accidentally (?) came into the bath area. Fortunately (?), it seemed everyone was already in the tub, so when we told him it was women-only at that time, he hurriedly rushed out. It didn’t turn into a major issue, but it felt like measures should be in place on the Accommodation’s side to prevent this from happening.

    The hot spring was wonderful.

    The hot water bubbling up intermittently from the bottom was a luxury that let us feel the breath of the earth firsthand. Even though the building is historic, it was also nice that the toilets were clean and equipped with bidet functions. The only slight disappointment was the meals. In particular, the three-item spring wild vegetable platter had batter that was far too hard. If the batter had been a bit thinner, I could have eaten it.

    While there may be some inconveniences and the meals may feel a bit lacking, the traditional atmosphere and the quality of the Onsen more than make up for it.

    The atmosphere and the Onsen were both amazing!

    The Onsen and the Room atmosphere were excellent, and the service was great. After check-in, there isn’t much to do besides taking a walk around the Accommodation and the surrounding area, but we were able to slowly enjoy an extraordinary getaway with just the Onsen, the Room, and the meals. It’s an Onsen I’d definitely like to visit again. Next time, I plan to check in early and spend a luxurious time relaxing with a book.

    It was my first time experiencing bathwater this clear.

    I had never experienced such crystal-clear hot spring water before. The scenery was also wonderful, and I was impressed by everyone who maintains it so well.

    I finally got to stay at the Onsen I’d always dreamed of.

    I finally made it to Hoshi Onsen, a place I had long wanted to visit, just as spring was approaching. At Hoshi-no-Yu, there is a short women-only time slot, so I was able to relax and enjoy it. I could feel the hot water welling up from the bottom, and it was wonderfully soft on the skin. As this is a historic Accommodation, I didn’t expect much in terms of amenities, but the Room was refreshingly simple with nothing unnecessary. The meals offered many dishes with a wide variety of options, and the portions were more than sufficient. I would love to visit again in a different season.

    It was excellent.

    This was my fourth stay. The Hoshi-no-Yu Onsen, where the water naturally wells up at your feet, is simply outstanding in both water quality and temperature. However, it is basically mixed bathing, and unlike Sukayu, the water is clear, so it feels almost like a men’s bath. It’s very disappointing that there are only two hours for women-only bathing at night, which makes it extremely crowded. I would really like to have two hours—at least one hour—for women to relax and bathe in the morning as well. For men, I think this is a very good Onsen Ryokan.

    The historic building is wonderful.

    Moved by the building’s history. Amazed by the natural hot spring water welling up from beneath my feet at Hoshi-no-Yu, I soaked for a long time. This has become an Accommodation I’d like to visit again.

    A Nostalgic Place

    I had the opportunity to visit the renowned Hoshi Onsen. While some renovations have been made to suit modern times, the atmosphere of a traditional and charming Onsen Accommodation remains intact, offering a nostalgic and calming experience. The service was not overbearing but maintained an appropriate distance while providing explanations about the room and meals, which made the dishes even more enjoyable. The Onsen lived up to its reputation and was absolutely fantastic. I would love to visit again in a different season.

    The accommodation wa...

    The accommodation was old but very clean and comfortable. The food was delicious and plentiful. However, I didn't particularly like the taste of the miso soup. Since it’s a cold area, curtains on the windows would be nice, and it was unfortunate that the heating couldn't be adjusted. I appreciated having a kotatsu. Although it's a five-star accommodation, it was disappointing that amenities and towels were minimal. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Extraordinary Accommodation

    Enjoy the historic cultural property, relax in the bath, and immerse yourself in the extraordinary snowy scenery. The room and bath were excellent; however, some of the meals were pre-prepared and served cold, which was a bit disappointing. Additionally, upon departure, we had to wait for about 5-6 minutes as the owner and staff were engaged in conversation with what seemed to be regular guests, leaving us feeling quite disappointed. That said, this is an accommodation worth visiting at least once. Thank you very much!

    Amazing!

    Charming architecture and a wonderful bath. I usually don't travel specifically for Onsen, but this experience changed my perspective. The food was also exceptional, not the typical seafood dishes! I will definitely visit again.

    The Onsen was excellent.

    A long-awaited couple's trip: we enjoyed the Dragondola in the morning and had hegi soba for lunch. Our accommodation was at Chojukan in Hoshi Onsen. It was an onsen accommodation we had been wanting to visit, and both the meals and service were excellent. The three onsen baths were especially outstanding. The temperature was just right for me, with soft water that made me want to stay immersed forever. This is an onsen accommodation I would love to revisit!

    Dreams come true!

    I had always wanted to stay here, and this time my wish came true. The room was a unit in Kaunzanso, and I was very satisfied. The cleanliness was excellent, making it feel refreshing. The bath was as wonderful as expected, with impeccable cleanliness that added to the satisfaction. However, there were many stink bugs—6 in the room and numerous ones in the hallway. While I understand this is a natural phenomenon, it made it impossible to open the windows for fresh air, which was a bit disappointing. There is one thing I would like improved: meal timing. Once seated at the table, all dishes were served at once, making me feel rushed. It would be great if you could arrange meals so guests can enjoy them slowly while savoring drinks—perhaps over about 1.5 hours or so.

    Large number of stink bugs detected

    During this season, there seems to be a large outbreak of stink bugs, and I used tape to deal with over 20 of them. The Ryokan was filled with stink bugs, and the smell was overwhelming. If I had known in advance, I wouldn't have stayed here. However, the Onsen was absolutely excellent.

    Service quality has declined.

    Three years ago, the accommodation left a good impression, so I invited my senior couple to stay, but unfortunately, it turned into a disappointing trip. 1. The stink bug prevention was poorly managed; bugs entered the room, and the entire room smelled of bugs to an unbearable extent. 2. Some dishes were forgotten during the meal service; sashimi and chawanmushi were not served until we inquired about them. By then, we had already finished eating rice and could not enjoy them. There was no apology afterward either. 3. During futon setup or removal, the room key was left unlocked.

    Stayed at a hidden hot spring accommodation after a long time...

    Although it is located deep in the mountains, this accommodation is easily accessible by car and offers a perfect secluded onsen atmosphere as it is a standalone facility. The management of the facility and onsen is excellent, clearly reflecting the hard work of the owner and staff. However, regarding meals, they did not seem to reflect careful preparation of local mountain ingredients. Being in a mountainous area, there’s no need for seafood or luxurious ingredients, but I believe dishes that better highlight seasonal and local produce would be ideal. I truly appreciate everyone's efforts and sincerely hope to enjoy wonderful countryside cuisine here in the future.

    The atmosphere of the Facility is excellent, but the service is average.

    The secluded hot spring atmosphere is exceptional, and the bath has a charming ambiance. Although it was a stay on the eve of a holiday, the number of staff seemed insufficient compared to the number of guests, and their voices were hard to hear. As a result, dinner was strictly timed and served almost all at once, so there wasn't much opportunity to leisurely enjoy the meal. The taste is reasonably good. Wi-Fi is not available in the room, and mobile reception is quite weak, making it ideal for digital detoxing.

    About a 2-hour drive from Saitama, discover this amazing Onsen! Rich in history, charm, nature, and soothing waters—perfect for Onsen enthusiasts. While there are some limitations such as no lockers with keys, certain baths without washing areas, or mixed bathing options, the three types of Onsen here offer an incredibly satisfying experience!

    An Onsen full of charm nestled deep in the mountains

    We enjoyed the quiet and serene atmosphere. The greenery of the trees and the seasonal flowers in the garden were beautiful, and the historic building was wonderfully renovated, making the room very comfortable. The long-awaited Hoshi no Yu had women-only hours, which was great. We also thoroughly enjoyed meals filled with unique mountain delicacies. This is an accommodation that satisfies in every aspect.

    It was a relaxing experience.

    It was a wonderful place. The drive had some narrow roads, so caution is needed. At the parking lot, staff from the accommodation assisted us, making parking smooth and easy. The exterior of the accommodation exuded charm and an indescribable elegance. The lush greenery of the trees was breathtakingly beautiful and deeply moving. At check-in, we handed over our shoes to the staff at the entrance. Upon entering the building, it felt like stepping into another era. Our room was "Horyuden." It included a toilet, sink, and bath. There were three areas: a room with a sunken kotatsu table, the main room, and a small room with a table and chairs. Although we thought we wouldn’t use the sunken kotatsu table initially, it got chilly at night so we ended up using it comfortably. Right after arriving, we took a short walk around the area. Every view looked picturesque and touched our hearts deeply. Then came my long-awaited visit to "Hoshinoyu." When I arrived there initially during mixed-gender hours, I couldn’t enter yet; instead, I enjoyed "Tamakinoyu." The wooden hinoki bathtub reflected green maple leaves from outside while soaking in onsen—a luxurious experience indeed! I spent time leisurely enjoying this onsen while feeling immense happiness in every moment spent there outdoors amidst birdsong and rustling leaves—immersed in nature as if becoming one with it myself. Dinner followed next—a meal full of rich flavors that was absolutely delicious! From 8 PM to 10 PM each night," Hoshinoyu" becomes women-only access—I thoroughly enjoyed two blissful hours here which flew by like magic! This incredible hot spring bubbles naturally beneath your feet—it’s truly remarkable! Unfortunately though only accessible during nighttime for me personally but learned Mondays (like June 23rd) are designated women-only days allowing morning entry too—if closer geographically would surely revisit often! Despite taking approximately eight hours reaching here overall journey proved worthwhile beyond words reflecting fondly upon entire experience afterward wholeheartedly appreciating decision made coming all way through till end! Next morning began exploring “Chojunoyu” featuring intricate wooden flooring design alongside similar bubbling foot springs adding further charm altogether enhancing memorable stay even more significantly overall impression left behind unmatched entirely longing return someday soon hopefully coinciding autumn foliage season ideally coupled exclusive female-dedicated day arrangements alike previously mentioned earlier above already noted beforehand prior accordingly likewise anticipated eagerly forward-looking ahead optimistically envisioned future plans potentially realized eventually     Excellent Bath Facilities

    The three baths are simply outstanding, especially "Hoshi no Yu," which offers exceptional water quality and ambiance. While the meals and facilities may not match the baths in excellence, they are still satisfactory. This accommodation is a must-visit for onsen enthusiasts.

    An accommodation where you can enjoy an onsen.

    The three Onsen each had unique features and were enjoyable. My favorite was the indoor bath of "Tamaki no Yu," which was perfect in terms of water volume, quality, and atmosphere. The main "Hoshi no Yu" was visited on a cold day, so despite a long soak, I felt chilly during the walk back to the changing area. This is understandable given the circumstances. Regarding the mixed bathing policy, as it has been widely discussed by others, I will refrain from commenting here. As for the room setup, hospitality, and meals, there was nothing particularly noteworthy. This might be a common evaluation for accommodations under "Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns."

    A Secluded Hidden Hot Spring Accommodation

    This wooden Accommodation has three hot spring baths, and the irori hearth adds a charming atmosphere. I stayed for two nights because I wanted to try Hoshi-no-Yu, which I had seen in a movie. The stone-laid floor in the bath is difficult to walk on. The road to the Accommodation is narrow, so it can be troublesome when an oncoming car approaches. From the parking lot to the entrance is unpaved, so when it rains or snows, the mud was somewhat of a concern.

    It has a charming atmosphere.

    The mixed-gender bath has a lot of charm and is lovely, but given the presence of ill-mannered male guests, the current system might not be acceptable. Since the bathhouse is spacious, I thought of trying the mixed-gender time and went to take a look, only to find a man deliberately facing the entrance of the women's side of the eight baths, making eye contact as soon as I peeked, so I gave up. I would like to request at least an increase in the women-only time to two hours. The room, though small, had a nice view, and I didn't particularly notice any issues with cleanliness, but it was difficult to adjust the heating. Even when the heater was set to low, it was too hot, and turning it off made it cold. The dining hall was opposite, and the sliding doors on the window side couldn't be opened. The meals were generally disappointing in taste, especially the rice, which was surprisingly not delicious, but the sukiyaki was tasty. Both on the way there and back, the Shinkansen delays were troublesome, but it was a good memory to experience the charm. Although it is a secluded property, it is relatively easy to reach by public transportation in a short time, so if you are interested, it might be good to experience it while checking other reviews.

    Satisfaction is high.

    The building has a charming atmosphere, the onsen met expectations in both ambiance and water quality, and the meals, seemingly handmade with local ingredients, were delicious. The staff were kind, and I would like to stay again. However, for those who are not fond of insects, it might be tough as stink bugs appear in the room. Also, it was a bit disappointing that squid, which I had informed as an allergy ingredient, was included in the Matsumae pickles at breakfast.

    "Comfortable Hidden Hot Spring"

    The temperature of the hot water is perfect, making you want to stay in it forever. Being able to go to the bath during less crowded times is a privilege for guests, and I was able to enjoy the Hoshi no Yu without any stress, leisurely and luxuriously. It was worth staying. Next time, I will stay in the annex!
